ANTI CIMEX: The Complete Demos Collection 1982-1983 LP (AG 122LP)

Swedish raw punk legends Anti Cimex have finally reached the joyful lands of Agipunk. On this record the label collectd in chronological order all the demos and the studio recording sessions that haven't been released on any official release so far. A total of 29 tracks that originally appeared on K.A.A.S January 1982, K.A.A.S April 1982, En Produkt Av Dagens Skitsamhälle tapes plus the studio session right before the Raped Ass 7" EP and the discarded recordings for the full length that never saw the light and eventually became the Victims Of A Bomb Raid 7" EP. All you Cimex maniacs out there probably already know most of the songs, but you'll definitely find a bunch of extremely obscure tracks which I bet you've never heard before. All the tracks come from the original tapes and the sound has been restored and remastered by Lasse at Ballade Studio in Copenhagen.

TAJ MAHAL TRAVELLERS: August 1974 2LP (ZORN 052LP)

2021 restock. Aguirre Records present a reissue of Taj Mahal Travellers' August 1974, originally released in 1975. A monumental work by the Japanese experimental music ensemble. In April 1972 a group of Japanese musicians set off from Rotterdam in a Volkswagen van. As they crossed Europe and then made their way through Asia they made music in a wide range of locations. They also paid close attention to the changing scene and to differing ways of life. Midway through May they reached their destination, the iconic Taj Mahal on the bank of the Yamuna river in Agra, India. The Taj Mahal Travellers had fulfilled physically the promise of the name they adopted when they formed in 1969. The double album August 1974 was their second official release. The first July 15, 1972 is a live concert recording, but on August 19th, 1974 the Taj Mahal Travellers entered the Tokyo studios of Nippon Columbia and produced what is arguably their definitive statement. The electronic dimension of their collective improvising was coordinated, as usual, by Kinji Hayashi. Guest percussionist Hirokazu Sato joined long-term group members Ryo Koike, Seiji Nagai, Yukio Tsuchiya, Michihiro Kimura, Tokio Hasegawa, and Takehisa Kosugi. The enigmatic Takehisa Kosugi, whose soaring electric violin was such a vital element in their music, had been a pioneer of free improvisation and intermedia performance art with Group Ongaku at the start of the '60s. Later in that decade, before launching the Taj Mahal Travellers, he had become known internationally through his association with the fluxus art movement. During the mid-70s the Travellers disbanded and while his colleagues more or less stopped performing as musicians Kosugi continued to reach new audiences across the course of several decades as a composer, regular performer, and musical director for the acclaimed Merce Cunningham Dance Company. August 1974 captures vividly the characteristic sound of the Taj Mahal Travellers, haunting tones from an unusual combination of instruments, filtered through multiple layers of reverb and delay. Their music has strong stylistic affinities with the trippy ambience of cosmic and psychedelic rock, but the Taj Mahal Travellers were tuning in to other vibrations, drawing inspiration from the energies and rhythms of the world around them rather than projecting some alternative reality. NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY WITH EVAN PARKER: Descension (Out Of Our Constrictions) CD (ZORN 074CD)

Rich in musical associations yet utterly singular in its voice, joyous with an inner tranquility, the music of Natural Information Society is unlike any other being made today. Their sixth album in eleven years for eremite records, descension (Out of Our Constrictions) is the first to be recorded live, featuring a set from London's Cafe OTO with veteran English free-improv great Evan Parker, & the first to feature just one extended composition. The 75-minute performance, inspired by the galvanizing presence of Parker, is a sustained bacchanalia of collective ecstasy. You could call it their party album.

This was the second time Parker played with NIS. Joshua Abrams: "Both times we played compositions with Evan in mind. I don't tell Evan anything. He's a free agent."

The music is focused & malleable, energized & even-keeled, drawing on concepts of ensemble playing common to musics from many locations & eras without any one specific aesthetic realization completely defining it.

"The rhythms that Mikel plays are not an exact reference to Chicago house, but that's in there," Abrams says. "I like to take a cyclic view of music history, can we take that four-on-the-floor, & consider how it connects to swing-era music? Can we articulate a through line? I dee-jayed for years in Chicago & lessons I learned from playing records for dancing inform how I think about the group's music. The listener can make connections to aspects of soul music, electronic music, minimalism, traditional folk musics, & other musics of the diaspora as well. It's about these aspects coming together. I don't need to mimic something, I need to embody it to get to the spirit, to get to the living thing."

For jazz fans, the sound of Parker's soprano & Jason Stein's bass clarinet might evoke Coltrane & Dolphy, even though they didn't necessarily set out to do that & they play with complete individuality. Abrams sees a bridge to the historical precedent, too. "Since we first met in the 1990s, one of the things that Evan and I connected on was Coltrane's music," he says. "I hoped that we would tap into that sound world intuitively. In this case, I think that level of evocation adds another layer of depth, versus a layer of reference."

Indeed, this is a performance in which the connections among the ensemble & the creative tension between improvisation and composition build into a complex mesh of associations & interactions. While the band confines itself to the territory mapped out by Abrams' composition, they are remarkably attentive & responsive, making adjustments to Parker's improvisations. When Parker's intricate patterns of notes interweave with the band, the parts reinforce one another & the music rockets upward. Sometimes, Parker's lines are cradled by the group's gentle pulse & an unearthly lyrical balance is struck.

Drummer Mikel Patrick Avery is locked-in, playing with hellacious long-form discipline, feel & responsiveness. Jason Stein's animated, vocalized bass clarinet weaves in & out with Lisa Alvarado's harmonium to state the piece's thematic material; the pulsing tremolo on the harmonium brings a Spacemen 3 vibe to the party. Abrams ties together melody & rhythm on guimbri, a presence that leads without seeming to. Like his bandmates, he shifts modes of playing frequently, improvising & then returning to the composed structure.

"As specific as the composition is, the goal is to internalize it & mix it up," Abrams says. "The idea is to get so comfortable that we can make spontaneous changes, find new routes of activity, stasis & byways every gig. It's like a web we're spinning. If someone makes a move, we all aim to be aware of it, make room for it. Experiencing & listening is what it's about, & Evan supercharges that."

& "supercharged" is the word for this album. With Parker further opening up their music, descension (Out of Our Constrictions) is the sound of Natural Information Society growing both more disciplined and freer, one of the great bands of its time on a deep run.

"Those who meditate in silence": it is one of the meanings of the Sanskrit word Muni, a new musical project by Nicola Caleffi, multi-instrumentalist and founder of the Italian band Julie's Haircut. The debut album Soma (the sacred drink of the Vedic cult) was born from a day of studio improvisation which also involved Laura Storchi, a Julie's Haircut founding member, Claudio Luppi, and Pierluigi Lanzillotta, the latter two engaged in various projects including the psych-rock outfit Pip Carter Lighter Maker. As invigorated by the properties of the Soma itself -- the nectar that brings health and immortality -- the four "cantors" unleash their minds to give life to an initiatory journey in deep communion with nature. From the thrilling fourth-world plots of "Drinking At The River Of Light", which hides jazz-veins inspired by the Miles Davis of "He Loved Him Madly" and "In A Silent Way", to the psychedelic drifts of "Spirit Animal", in which horn players Silvia Orlandini and Paolo Campani also participate playing their winds, Muni manage to make spaces and silences resonate, transforming music into an imaginary landscape. Among ethno-tribal textures, in which the Bruce Palmer of "The Cycle Is Complete" era resounds, mystical psychedelia and sidereal excursions, also the tracks "Presence By The Fire" and "Corona Borealis" follow one other, closing the circle of a pilgrimage that Muni travel between heaven and earth accompanied by three very dear texts, which attended during the studio sessions: the Bhagavadgītā, the zen poem "Shodoka" by Yoka Daishi and the poems by Dylan Thomas. CHILTON, ALEX: Dusted In Memphis (And Elsewhere) 2LP (BIGAL 666LP)

2021 restock. First time re-issue of the legendary Alex Chilton album Dusted In Memphis, originally released in 1980. For many, this is Alex's finest. Includes a second bonus album full of unreleased material; covers, alternate versions, fantastic demos, and infamous complete KUT radio session. All culled from the period between 1975 and 1980, a troubled - but prolific and brilliant - time for Chilton. This is deconstructed rock n roll, perfect pop songs perversely pureed, punkabilly before the term was coined, chaotic, trashy, beautiful. Allegedly, the only copy of these recordings that anyone associated with was lost in the house fire that claimed Alex Chilton's mother's life. If this is true, and the masters have been lost, it is truly a great, great shame as these are possibly the best post-Big Star recordings of Alex's long solo career. This quite legendary bootleg bridges the gap between Sister Lovers (1978) and Like Flies On Sherbert (1979). It contains the Elektra demos with some songs that might be regarded amongst Big Star's finest if they would have found a proper release. This is a great shame as it is an excellent document of where Alex was at during this stage of his career (he wooed the critics during his time in NY, but not the major labels). File between: Skip Spence's Oar (1969), Panther Burns's Behind The Magnolia Curtain (1981), Neil Young's Tonight's the Night (1975) and early Cramps.

Originally released in 1979, Percussion Spectrum was produced by the legendary percussionists Barry Morgan and Ray Cooper. With dope beats taking in diverse styles, from funk and soul and jazz through to Latin, Brazilian, samba and Afro-Cuban, this is an amazing sample source filled with killer drum-breaks and percussion flares. This library LP is a mix of short themes of single beats, short breaks and some longer, more fully-formed DJ-friendly tracks. Of all the 34 tracks Be With's favorites include opener "Impulsion", a percussive masterclass with drum upon drum making it feel like a neat prototype to the percussive underscores of Peter Lüdemann and Pit Troja's eternal The Now Generation LP. And the dramatic "Fast Action" is exactly that, racing along on a rapid roll of congas, cymbal crashes and throbbing kicks. "The Chaser" is classic library cop-funk with dilapidated drum figures, and the outrageously funky "Heat On" is the perfect accompaniment to your wild action sequences. A real highlight is "Runaway", and not just because it sounds like nothing else on the record. Here are drums and percussion in that tight funk style that just cries out to be sampled. "Percussion Power" is an extended, near three-minute suite of funky drum solo after funky drum solo that just aches to be looped. "Shivers" is a tense, apprehensive underscore with shock stabs that builds to a climax whilst "Drums On Parade" is a showcase of head-nod drums and cymbals in march time. "Samba Street" is riotous, authentically drawn samba that sounds like it's been beamed straight in from Rio in full flow. The simple, innocent "Child's Themes" (all five of them) provide a nice, sweet respite from all the funk. Nursery sounds tinged with only a touch of melancholy. The gentle marimba solo of "Tropical Peace" only adds to the sense of serenity we get from the relatively calm second side. The album closes out with a veritable toolkit of tom toms, snare drum rolls, timpani, vibraphones and chiming bells. MANSFIELD, KEITH: Vivid Underscores (KPM) LP (BEWITH 092LP)

They say: "Contemporary scores for visual effect." Be With Records say: "Synth-heavy, low-slung space-funk masterpiece." The creator of the romping tunes that became the iconic themes to the BBC's Grandstand program and their televised Wimbledon Tennis Championship coverage, Keith Mansfield was perhaps KPM's most prolific artist from the mid-1960s right the way through the 1980s. As well as the sort of pop orchestral sound that is all over these classic library records, he could also turn his hand to raw, edgy rock and funk. Quentin Tarantino has included some of Keith's work on the soundtracks to Kill Bill and Grindhouse (2007). Mansfield's Vivid Underscores from 1977 is a sample freak's wet dream. "High Velocity" sets the tone with its aggressive horns, wah-wah guitars, funky baseline and wobbly synth refrain. "Crash Course" -- Stetsasonic horn refrain? Beautiful -- jazzy chase-funk, amazing warm keys, percussion, and funky horns -- all action. The more restrained "Matter Of Urgency" is an utterly amazing, brass-heavy underscore. The grandiose, uplifting "Dawn Of Aquarius" still sounds like the future with its tense, thundering drums, killer bassline and swirling synths. Version II loses the drums and percussion but is no less startling. "Staying Power" closes the first side with a relentless, pounding groove. "Trucking Company" is a pacey, synth-and-string masterpiece and its accompanying parts mess with the formula to great effect. "Hot Cargo" and "Espionage" are both tense spy-funk themes par excellence. "Interplay" is a quiet killer, with flutes over a glistening piano refrain just waiting to be looped. "Omen" is a mini-drama masterpiece, one only Mansfield could create. Even though it is a mix of short themes in-and-amongst longer, full-length tracks, Vivid Underscores is still thoroughly listenable from start to finish. MANSFIELD, KEITH: Contempo (KPM) LP (BEWITH 093LP)

They say: "New directions in contemporary scoring." Be With Records say: "Contempo is one of the best full album listens in the KPM 1000 library." Succinct smoking soul, super tight breaks and string-drenched sleaze composed by the library master, Keith Mansfield. Many library records are a game of two halves and Contempo is certainly one of those. The first side cooks on a high funk breaks flame whilst the flip is something altogether more tranquil, yet no less groovy. It lays back with dreamier, post-coital grooves. Rugged funk opener "The Fix" confidently displays its low-slung languid grooves with heavy drums, horns, and bass. The punchy "What's Cooking" follows and has a lighter, more whimsical touch. The dark and moody intro to "Cut To Music" gives way to a more inclusive, relaxed funk that's all irresistible bass and stabbing horns. The mid-tempo "Man Alive" signals the time to really get down. Closing out the A side, fresh guitar licks drip all over the slick drums of "Funky Footage", with a New Orleans piano vibe coming on to really light a fire. The B side is more smoothed out, with beautifully arranged, sweeping strings, sax solos aplenty, and a real '70s soundtrack feel. The super sleek and sexy jazz funk of "Breezin'" is as light and magical as you'd hope. An open-air masterpiece, its indulgent sound is just a taster of the sophisticated funk to follow. The elegant, romantic feels of "Good Vibrations" is a string-drenched, wah-wah fueled ode to living your best life. Whilst it keeps a very West Coast feel, the blaxploitation strut is certainly more Blackbyrds than Brian Wilson. "Sun Goddess" will blow your mind with the sensuous sound of glorious horns and beautiful keys. The luxurious "Love De Luxe" and its horizontal grooves have been much sampled, but here it proves that it doesn't need any help to get you in an intimate mood. Closer "Snake Hips" is a cool mid-pace slouch. 2021 restock. Black Truffle present the first ever vinyl reissue of David Rosenboom's legendary Brainwave Music, originally released on A.R.C. Records in 1975. This is an expanded double-LP edition with over 40 minutes of additional contemporaneous material. Pioneer of live electronics, innovator in music education, collaborator with artists as diverse as Jon Hassell, Jacqueline Humbert, Terry Riley, and Anthony Braxton, Rosenboom is renowned for his ground-breaking experiments with the use of brain biofeedback to control live electronic systems. Each of the three pieces that make up the original Brainwave Music LP integrates biofeedback with musical technology in different ways. In the side-long "Portable Gold and Philosophers' Stones", four performers have electrodes and monitoring devices attached to their bodies to receive information about brainwaves, temperature, and galvanic skin response. This information is analyzed and fed into a complex set of frequency dividers and filters, manned by Rosenboom, but essentially played by each of the performers through their psychophysiological responses. The result is a slowly unfolding web of filtered electronic tones over a tanpura-esque fundamental, possessing the unhurried, stately grandeur of an electronic raga. In "Chilean Drought", three different variations of a text about a drought in Chile, read by a different voice in a different style, are associated with the beta, alpha, and theta brainwave bands. Alongside an insistent piano accompaniment, three constantly shifting vocal recordings are controlled by the relative preponderance of each of the brainwave bands in the soloist. "Piano Etude I (Alpha)", the earliest piece included here, is based on research into the link between alpha brain wave production and the execution of repetitive motor tasks. As Rosenboom plays a very rapid, incessantly repeated pattern in both hands, two filters controlled by monitoring his brainwaves process the piano sound, moving gradually higher in frequency as the average alpha amplitude increases. For this reissue, the original LP is supplemented with an additional LP containing an unreleased 1977 live recording of Rosenboom's "On Being Invisible", in which the composer himself performs on an array of electronics that are fed information from his brainwaves. Stretching out over 40 minutes, the piece begins in similar territory to "Portable Gold and Philosophers' Stones" but eventually becomes far wilder, building up to pointillistic bleeps and dense layers of electronic fizz that unexpectedly cut to near-silence. As Rosenboom explains, the piece creates a situation in which the "performer's active imaginative listening became one of the ways to play their instrument, as well as an active agent in how self-organizing musical forms might emerge." "Tom" -- a crepuscular mid-tempo with a touch of soul produced for Barclay in 1968 -- is François Bernheim's first solo release. Michel Handson signs this B-side with a touch of hip-hop in 1973 for the label Butterfly. This track from the Swede Matty Kemer's only single, a tribute to freedom and aviation, was recorded for the label Disque d'Or. Gilles Janeyrand's track was recorded in 1969 at the Studio des Dames. Albert-Henri Rykaert aka Alain Ricar was a comedian, singer, and songwriter, performing in cabarets or for the theatre, in Paris and in Belgium, then on RTB (Belgian TV). Paul Dupret captivates with the debonair B-side of the one and only single he released for the label Vogue in 1970. Richard Hertel's first single as a singer on the label Liberty, "Patatras Hola", also sees him play the drums and organ. Perfect groove, amused lyrics, and atonal gimmick. From a mainly folk corpus emerges Michel Didier's flashy cover of "Rainbow Chaser" by the English band Nirvana, here renamed "Comme un arc-en-ciel", is soaked in trippy effects by Jean-Claude Vannier. "Vedette international" is the work of the mysterious Liberatore. Alain Serco signs a frantic homage to his best friend Kiki, the B-side of his sole single, released on South Records at the beginning of the '70s. Gérard Gray, sensitive to rare or exotic instruments, search for a "different" sound and put together demos tinkering with a Revox tape deck and a variety of objects. "Le Grand Méchant Loup" by François Faray revisits Charles Perrault's tale of sexual liberation, yielding an ambitious glam-rock track. Patrice Lamy is a romantic singer from Lausanne. 2021 restock; LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's seventh and final album of the 1970s Stand By, originally released in 1979. After the release of Stand By, Richard Pinhas focused on solo LPs before quitting music for around a decade. "It was the end of the tale," he explains. "We decided to split for many reasons. The main one was that one or two of the other musicians wanted to stop. They were session musicians, mainly. At one point they said they didn't have so much time to give. And it was a time when a lot of bands who had become reluctantly successful decided to split . . . Split at the top, not waiting to go down." Heldon certainly went out on a high. Stand By's mood remains urgent and gripping throughout, fashioned via immense synthesizer sounds, a plethora of interweaving drum patterns, spiraling guitar chops, and lurching riffs. It's been likened to krautrock, yet Pinhas never paid attention to the German scene. There are other similarities to parallel innovations that John Carpenter was making in the field of sci-fi/horror soundtracks. The hazmat-suit-wearing figure on Stand By's cover could have starred in such a movie. The album's unearthly vocals were provided by Klaus Blasquiz of Magma. Some progressive musicians of the '70s felt threatened by the rise of punk -- Not Pinhas. As producer, he worked with French punk acts like Asphalt Jungle. No, Pinhas was more troubled by wider world developments. These miseries played their own part in Heldon's demise. "We recorded Stand By in '78, going into '79. Politics had all shifted to the right with your Maggie Thatcher and, in America, that very bad actor. They started the bullshit of neoliberalism that we have to live with now, everywhere. We're going to be in a very fascistic world within twenty years. Not even that long. The initiation of this change came with Reagan and Maggie. It started in the '80s." Stand By was recorded at Studio Davout, the Parisian home to recordings by everyone from Karlheinz Stockhausen to Johnny Hallyday. That, too, has fallen victim to brutal economics. It was demolished in 2018. "They destroyed the main historical studio in France to put up a supermarket!" says Pinhas. "It was a place where a lot of things happened. Musicians were working all night long. It could've been a museum for music."

LP version. Irish producer Chris W Ryan (Just Mustard, NewDad, Robocobra Quartet) began releasing music under the moniker Sorbet in 2020 with the express intention to cleanse the palate; both for the listener and himself. Spending much of his time in the studio with other artists, Chris took inspiration from producer-led albums like Brian Eno's Another Green World: "I love the way you can hear the playful interaction between friends on an album like that --there are none of the constraints or rules that you might have when you're trying to represent the sound of a live band or artist." Exploring freely across genre bounds, the world of Sorbet is informed by electronic music just as much as classical and alt-pop, with nods to artists like Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, Kate Bush, and David Byrne. Inspired by this freedom of creativity, the debut Sorbet album This Was Paradise features a host of collaborators orbiting around Chris's nucleus, in which he flexes his ability as a composer and technician in equal measure. These collaborations include vocal features from Maija Sofia, Mark McCambridge (Arborist), and Mícheál Keating (Bleeding Heart Pigeons) as well as powerful instrumental performances from musicians working in the jazz and classical world poached by Chris, such as jazz saxophonist Lara Jones and upright bass player Jack Kelly. Jones and Kelly feature on lead single "I Heard His Scythe", a song which slices through the despair with an optimistic nihilism that is central to the record. Featuring a musical backing that nods to Kate Bush's "Watching You Without Me" alongside Maija Sofia's airy refrain rebutting the grim reaper. All of this sonic looseness is bound tightly by the concept behind This Was Paradise: a rumination on humanity's precarious position in a living purgatory. "We're stuck between Paradise and Hell, always swinging between the two as a result of how we behave towards each other and our planet." This duality is represented in the binary use of electronic and acoustic instruments, especially in the case of album closer "(Hell)" -- a recording split right down the middle between a string quartet and four synthesizers. "Aesthetically I wanted to hang in the balance of electronic and acoustic composition: between the natural world and humanity's imprint on it." Therein lies the central theme of This Was Paradise -- an album littered with references to Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost which opens with Adam being expelled from the Garden of Eden for "Man's first disobedience and the fruit of that forbidden tree."

LP version. "1980, Friday evening in the Munich suburban pub Panoptikum. My girlfriend draws my attention to the fact that behind me two guys are talking about looking for a new guitarist for their band. I turn around, chat them up (Jochen and Thomas) and praise my skills to the skies. A few days later I'm standing in Thomas' perfectly equipped practice room with my Ibanez Les Paul copy. We jam a little while -- jazz rock, to which I can contribute very little due to my lack of skills. We quickly agree on a new style: minimalist, no drums, just a drum machine, Moog and organ, less guitar, dry bass. And German lyrics! We don't really know or want that this should be 'NDW'. But of course we listen to DAF, Ideal, FSK, Fehlfarben and -- yes, SPLIFF too. These influences are undeniable. So we found the PISS OFF ORKESSTR, which very quickly becomes P'OFF ORKESSTR and then finally P!OFF?. Ambitious and inspired, we produce a demo cassette that already contains 'Das dicke Kind', 'Großer Bruder', 'Pass Auf!', and 'Walkman' and send it to various record companies -- including Munich's 'Ariola', which is desperately looking for NDW acts because the Ariola empire has missed this trend. Therefore, they 'buy' about 25 bands at the drop of a hat -- and P!OFF? is supposed to be one of them, because they expect some good airplay mainly from 'Walkman'. Producer god Anthony Monn (Amanda Lear, Relax, Saragossa Band, Fancy et al.) takes us under his wing and manages to keep the original demo sound, but to improve it considerably. 'Mein Walkman ist kaputt' didn't make it into the charts, but it was played more often on the radio and the Album didn't sell badly. In 1982, however, NDW is now commercialized to death and that ship had sailed. But we stay together (under different band names) and over the decades become first New Romantics, then Indie Rockers, then Grunge Noise Makers and finally Electronic Freaks. In 2009, for my fiftieth birthday, we decide to play a few songs from the old 82 record live, which becomes a huge success. And so we are -- again as P!OFF? -- still on the road with our old songs. The '82 album has become a sought-after collector's item and cult object -- so we are very happy that Bureau B is presenting a lovingly remastered reissue after almost 40 years." --Alex Weidner

LP version. Terrible times indeed. Discerning pop music fans will therefore be more than pleased that intellectual rock darlings, Austrian band Ja, Panik, are back after a seven-year hiatus. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, given that in their 2016 band autobiography Futur II -- published to mark their tenth anniversary -- the Berlin-based quartet of Andreas Spechtl (vocals, guitar), Stefan Pabst (bass), Sebastian Janata (drums), and Laura Landergott (keyboards & guitar), pretty much announced their permanent dissolution. Never ones to repeat themselves, the eponymously titled Die Gruppe demonstrates that the four band members have been busy honing their craft, producing a sixth album that reveals a new level of artistic maturity. The eleven songs on the album were recorded during the summer pandemic lockdown of 2020, which the band spent in their home region of Burgenland. The curfew issued by the Austrian government meant that band had to hole up in their makeshift studio, working on the material that Andreas Spechtl, singer and songwriter, had demoed earlier in the year while staying in Tunisia. The pandemic restrictions also meant that Die Gruppe was their first work to be self-produced. On the Spacemen 3-tinged tune "The Cure", Spechtl's German-English plea to his doctor for help now sounds like it was tailor-made for these challenging times. Unambiguous, however, is the ghost of the late cultural critic and chief hauntologist Mark Fisher, who looms large over Die Gruppe. Other literary allusions include hidden references to Medea Material by East German playwright Heiner Müller, or to Donna Haraway's book Staying with the Trouble. Spechtl also churns out great pop songs if he pleases. "On Livestream" is a case in point: a quintessential Ja, Panik tune, this infectious pop song about how our communication has now shifted to video conferencing incorporating a plethora of lush production effects. "1998" is an atmospheric ballad with Spechtl in semi-autobiographical mode. Other tracks like "What If" and "The Zing of Silence" show off the experimental, electronic side of Ja, Panik and act as interludes between the songs proper. Die Gruppe is not merely a collection of tunes but a finely-crafted album that draws its captivating qualities from the unfolding dramaturgy of the songs, the interplay between the German and English language, and the effort to deviate from well-trodden paths in each and every song in terms of both writing and production.

"The beginnings of Camouflage represent a personal voyage of discovery in so many ways. Ideas, compositions, arrangements, sound and not least the technical question of the recording process -- this was all completely new ground for me. Getting to grips with songwriting and studio engineering without any form of training or professional guidance involves a great deal of trial and error and, above all, plenty of time. Any spare minutes I had were spent with our synthesizers and recording equipment. Every demo, every attempt to imitate the sound of a favorite record or device rang true to the mantra of 'learning by doing' ... equipment with no memory function (please do not touch!), the constant humming of cheap wires and cables (soldering is a must-have skill!), rotten-sounding cassettes (which had been recorded over several times, of course), a healthy degree of overconfidence (who needs a Fairlight CMI?) or the frequently unpredictable vagaries of analog technology on a home studio budget -- there were many lessons to be learned. Most of the tracks on this album were recorded with a basic stereo (2-track) cassette recorder. The studio set-up looked more or less like this: a drum computer (no MIDI) and a sequencer were connected to each other and synchronized rhythmically. I crafted melodic sequences and rhythms and usually transposed them to the desired pitch manually, using the keyboards. Other live instruments were played over the top. Then everything, the sum of all the sound sources, was put together in a kind of 'live recording' with the aid of a mixing desk. Just a single mistake would mean having to start all over again. Reconfiguring many of the sounds once the controls had already been adjusted was a painstaking process. I ended up with heaps of cassettes, often featuring seemingly endless versions and variations of the same track . . . State of the art studio technology and audio restoration algorithms helped me to get these tracks back into listenable shape. Sifting through the archive and unearthing long-forgotten song ideas can create a retrograde vibe . . . I had fun with all of it and I hope that the tracks selected will whet the appetite of fresh listeners to explore the early phase of my electronic music and the bizarre sonic worlds I inhabited." --Heiko Maile, December 2020

LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Hans Joachim Roedelius and Alexander Czjzek's Weites Land, originally released 1987. Vienna, the early 1980s. Krautrock, electronic, and ambient pioneer Hans Joachim Roedelius, co-founder Cluster and Harmonia and saxophone free spirit Alexander Czjzek meet for the first time. Their longstanding collaboration found its climax in the fantastic album Weites Land, which was released in 1987 for the first time, but has been out of print for many decades and became a sought-after rarity. Bureau B make this organic jazz masterpiece available again. The two artists responsible for Weites Land cast their minds back to the period leading up to the album.

Czjzek: "Joachim and I -- he was still something of an electronic purist when we first met -- took turns visiting each other's home studios as we began to acquaint ourselves with our respective musical approaches. I took my saxophones and improvised over Joachim's tapes. Whenever I signaled to him that he could start recording 'now', he'd invariably already done so -- and those spontaneous first takes were perfect, just as they were! Joachim amassed a wealth of material featuring my saxophone improvisations and mixed them with his own sounds, creating a wonderfully harmonious symbiosis of our different musical worlds. The beauty of it was how they converged without either of us needing to divert from his own path. The first collaborations appeared on Joachim's 1982 work Wasser im Wind, with our own joint release -- Weites Land -- following in 1987.

Roedelius: "Two creative minds, one of them Alexander's, allowing musical visions free rein in congenial expression. Biologia Animale e Vegetale was recorded in Torino in 1976 and originally published as double LP. Egisto Macchi, often remembered as a member of Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, the historic Italian improvising collective (that also included Franco Evangelisti and Ennio Morricone, among others), was a major figure within the contemporary music field from the fifties to the eighties. The life path of Egisto Macchi seemed to be devoted to the multiplicity of aesthetic choices and musical expressions. While tracing his life and work, one notices an interesting duality based both on a very inclusive approach towards all kind of expressive needs and full control of the level of communication. 2021 restock. Cold Spring Records announce the first ever official physical release of the soundtrack to Lars Von Trier's controversial film Antichrist, originally released in 2009. Ten years after the film's initial release, the extreme, provocative performances from Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist still have the power to shock, repulse, and divide. The sound design by Kristian Eidnes Andersen with Lars Von Trier was composed using only natural sounds and samples (including internal body recordings). Each element was recorded specifically for the film and overseen by Von Trier, including a brand new, somber performance of Händel's "Lascia Ch'io Pianga", recorded in Kastelskirken church in Copenhagen, 2009. Pressed onto heavyweight 180 gram vinyl with an etched B-side; housed in a heavy 350gsm full-color sleeve featuring the original theatrical release artwork, approved by the director.

Award-winning Danish composer Kristian Eidnes Andersen has produced music and sound design for films, television, and documentaries for 30 years, notably working with Lars Von Trier on the films Antichrist, The House That Jack Built (2018), Dancer In The Dark (2000), Melancholia (2011), and Nymphomaniac (Vol I & II) (2013).

After establishing his name with a string of tightly produced '90s-style house bangers, Singaporean producer Halal Sol comes through with a deeper, diverse sound on his latest Darker Than Waxouting, Dijamin. Meaning "guaranteed" in Malay, Dijamin's title refers to the producer's promise that each track on the record is genuinely crafted out of love and passion, and signaling a step forward in musical depth and polish. This heavily considered approach is evident in the production style, with layers of simple and minimal sounds expertly woven together, creating a cohesive whole that far exceeds the sum of its parts. This ethos is also present in the cover artwork -- taking inspiration from motifs in medieval Islamic structures, simple shapes and layers are woven together to form a stunning kaleidoscope of faces. This is Thurston Moore's seventh solo album, and features musicians Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on bass and backing vocals, Jon Leidecker aka "Wobbly" (of Negativland) on electronics, James Sedwards on guitar, and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley, as well as Jem Doulton, alternating on drums. "Hashish", the ﬁrst single from the album, is described by Moore as "an ode to the narcotic of love in our shared responsibility to each other during isolation." The song includes a video with footage from The Thurston Moore Group's tour in early 2020 in Europe, as well as footage of Thurston quarantined in his home during the past few months "with respect to the sacred healing truth of nature." Prior to isolation during the COVID pandemic, Thurston worked in recording studios in North London until the third week of March 2020 to complete this album for release on September 5, 2020. While the musicians may not immediately tour, Thurston was adamant to release By The Fire in 2020, and with Daydream Library, has released this quote: By The Fire is music in ﬂames. 2020 is our time for radical change and collective awareness and Thurston Moore has written nine songs of enlightenment, released to a world on ﬁre. Drips Zacheer deals with central issues of his life, such as family, friends, travel, and also fears and tries to reach the subconscious of his listeners through this sound game. Drips Zacheer is a real beat geek on the midi controller. The 25-year-old musician has been producing hip-hop instrumentals for almost ten years, which are based on lofi, chill-hop, boom bap, jazz, and also progressive rock and bossa nova. Until he was 19, he grew up in Chalkida, the capital of the Greek island of Evia, until he moved to Rhethymno on Crete to study audio engineering. He started out in 2011 as a producer for a befriended hip-hop crew, and in 2016 he began producing beats for himself. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most relevant producers in the Greek beat scene and with his choice of sounds shows that he has a knack for vinyl samples and harmonic arrangements.
