With Jupiter 6's The Tracking System, A Colourful Storm launches a series of 12" singles focusing on lesser-spotted dancefloor gems. This, the first, is two classics from the golden era of bleeps'n'bass techno with nods to Sheffield but apparently originating closer to Miami. CAMPANA & D. REGGI, R.: Sequence Unity 12" (ACOLOUR 018EP)
On Sequence Unity, A Colourful Storm compiles three tracks from the vaults of R. Campana and D. Reggi, two producers active in the early 2000s who released EPs on First Cut and, more notably, Groovepressure (home to Stopouts, , and Robin Ball). A three-track EP revived from a period of European underground club music, this is where breaks, electro and tech-house merged into unexpected new forms. RECEPT/TOM CHURCHILL: Quisite/Loss Leader 12" (ACOLOUR 019EP)
Quisite/Loss Leader is a double-header from A Colourful Storm, delivering Recept's sublime ode to Detroit, "Quisite" alongside a previously unheard number by Tom Churchill, head of Headspace Recordings and Emoticon (home to Q Project, Russ Gabriel, and Scape One). Our pick is "Quisite," an emotive, introspective dancefloor bomb which hasn't lost any charm since its 1998 release. Both tracks remastered in 2019 by Mike Grinser at Manmade Mastering, Berlin. SUN CITY GIRLS: Dawn of the Devi LP (ABDT 061LP)
Abduction Records reissue Dawn of the Devi, Sun City Girls' follow up album to Torch of the Mystics (ABDT 055LP). Originally released in 1991 on Majora Records, many who had discovered SCG via the preceding Torch LP were immediately alienated and blindsided by Devi and all the harshness that comes with it. Below, John Olson takes us back to 1991 when Dawn of the Devi premiered in all its glory and obscurity.

"Sun City Girls scan your dome for what they THINK you want but code it for the opposite. If you don't have me at my 'Napoleon & Josephine' then you don't get me at my 'Valentines for Matahari.' Easy to pick and choose your course thru their ridiculous and amazing path, but to fully get verbally abused by Uncle Jim you have to ingest it ALL. In order makes even less sense. Torch is like the APPLEBEES of the SCG catalog. My sister eats there, the appetizers are *good* / they have deals. Devi is after hours dish washing shift at the 'Bees: hurry with a joint out back with the one 'Kool' manager by the grease pit/catch the 11:15pm bus to go home to your loser roommates watching midget porn as they forget to clean up yet again. Everyone wants a wild free ethno-screech RNR unit as their own to mentally catalogue but when it comes to plugging in and actually DOING experiments, all of a sudden everyone wants to be locked into the 'Rock n Roll High School.' The underground should be difficult and on shaky ground -- like your first kiss. What worth is following rules when you make them yourself? That said, Devi and the previously mentioned Matahari are MY SCG. That fucking BASS sound battling with Jim Hall on Walmart 3am desert speed thru ten watts of pure terror peppered with the ????? tin can ethno rhythm confusion of the great late Charlie G with all cylinders blaring in 'four dateless months in winter mode' is my THC in spades. Devi's sprawling anti-social etho-mess aside, the back photo says it all, in loud mid-range volumes: backs turned, duct taped third eyes, audience of three of which two are talking about how to the get the f outta the gig, the WORKS. A band photo can make a record and this is probably the biggest example of it. Like The Fall's Room to Live, everyone stares at their Chuck Taylor's when Dawn of the Devi is mentioned. Fuck, I'd get a tat of that fem-beast featured on the stark cover, thug-life stomach style in a show of prime period SCG pride but I'm puss when it comes to needles & ink son. Me and soldier Jeff Dunn circa '91 would play this sandpapered masterpiece all day and stare at that photo, placing ourselves either onstage or in the audience, fantasizing how wild the experience must have been. Can't tell you how many times I've had my grill blasted by this unholy racket. The playing is incredible and antisocial AF -- timeless but yet perf for a certain era as well beyond inspiring, musically and culturally. Of course people hated it: tuneless, raw, desperate, sprawling, LONG. It's like if SOLGER went to the ghettos of Baghdad to score black tar feedback instead of sketcher punker huts in Seattle at the dawn of HXC. Everything you need for yet another lonely night glaring into an empty closet is inside this grim long player. How it will sink into the ten second modern digital era of attention is anyone's guess but it's bound to boil and microwave one kid's brain. And I'll def be hunting said kid down to shred with. Also, the fact that I can call the two remaining GIRLS friends and jaw about Sag-nasty with em makes the cake even sweeter homeboy. LONG MAY THEY ISOLATE." --John Olson, May 2018

LES RALLIZES DENUDES + BE: There's No Heaven Like Hell 2LP (FOX 003LP)
One of the strangest and most enigmatic groups in the history of rock n' roll, Les Rallizes Denudes, also known as Hadaka no Rallizes or Hadaka no Rarizu, were a Japanese experimental rock band that is often cited as a pioneering force of the noise rock movement. The story of the band is as strange and difficult as the music they made and although much of the tale is shrouded in mystery, everything apparently begins around Kyoto's radical anti-establishment communes of the late 1960s, where androgynous frontman Takashi Mizutani formed the group in November 1967 while attending Kyoto University. Hard facts are in thin supply and the band's name employs complex punning that essentially equates to "Fucked Up and Naked" in Japanese, a slang reference to being high on drugs. Inspired by the Velvet Underground and other groups employing prominent, overamplified guitar, the band's music was typically based on repetitive rhythmic patterns bolstered by Mizutani's heavily distorted lead guitar, though the poor sound quality of early demos apparently turned Mizutani away from studio recordings, rendering much of their output in the form of live bootlegs, supplanted by the occasional leaked studio demo. Early performances were given as accompaniment to avant-garde theater groups, though the group was soon deemed too loud to be a mere accompaniment, and membership fluctuated frequently, with Mizutani being the only constant, though he retreated from public view following the 1970 Red Army hijacking of Japan Airlines flight 351, with the assistance of original Rallizes bass player, Moriaki Wakabayashi, who subsequently fled to North Korea; the band continued to sporadically record and perform under various guises until 1997. The two versions of There's No Heaven Like Hell, presented here, was recorded on April 1, 1975 at Rallizes House in Fussa, a small town to the west of Tokyo, joining Mizutani with keyboardist/guitarist Taisuke Morishita's experimental group Be, originally known as Yellow. The first version takes the form of an epic slow drone, featuring Mizutani on acid guitar, backed only by Morishita's pulsating synthesizer lines; the second version is in full marathon mode, an hour-long dirge that sees the spacey duo joined by drummer Shunichiro Shoda and a plodding bassist in the latter portion.

APPAREL TRONIC (UK):

VA: Varioustronic 1 12" (APLTRONIC 010EP)
Apparel Tronic comes back after the heat of summer introducing the first compilation in its catalog as well as its tenth release overall, Varioustronic 1. This three track compilation is an ambitious project that unites three great artists with diverse approaches to music production, three different minds and visions, three declinations of the same verb brought together under the same roof. It's always a good thing to experiment, to try and push boundaries over again in everything and surely this is an organic evolution to the so-called "Bliss-Beat": the identifying concept behind that idea. The three producers chosen, Anton Kubikov, Artizhan, and Tommy Vicari Jr., need no introduction; it's simply a matter of being grateful to them for their availability to huddle up and create some great music for one cause and it's surprising how the three tracks, colliding, offer different but likeminded perspectives, like fragmenting planets creating new ones. This release is the result of two years of research, ending up choosing Anton's "Freak Out Little Bit", Artizhan's "Birthday" and Tommy's "Conceal" from among many others.

LES RITA MITSOUKO: L'Integrale 12CD BOX (BEC 5650118)
L'Intégrale is a boxset that encompasses the carrier and sonic brio of one of the most iconic French duos, Les Rita Mitsouko, nearly 40 years after Frédéric Chichin and Catherine Ringer formed the group. A boxset including Les Rita Mitsouko's seven studio albums, the remix album Re, two live albums, Acoustiques and En Concert Avec l'Orchestre Lamoureux, one mini-album titles The Eye (More Variety), one brand-new album of rarities, and one DVD with two rare tour movies, Panne Dans La Guerre Froide (1989) and La Vie Du Rail (1989) both shot and directed by Roland Allard in Moscow and Mumbai. All releases have been remastered from the original tapes by Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios. PAL format DVD (Region/Zone: 0).

Catherine Ringer and Frédéric Chichin met and formed an amazing band nearly 40 years ago. The subsequent music they made as Les Rita Mitsouko has remained steadfastly popular and relevant ever since. Neither fashions nor trends, nor Fred's tragic, untimely death in 2007, have blunted the sonic brio of this iconic duo. Always visually strong, mixing up humor and gravitas, madness and sweet derision, their rich, adventurous, modern discography, both joyfully experimental and commercially viable, has traversed the ages with impunity. For the uninitiated, here is a brief résumé of their discography and career: In 1979, multi-instrumentalists Catherine and Fred met on the set of the Marc'O punk opera Flashes Rouges in the edgy Montreuil suburb of Paris. They hit it off immediately and soon embarked on a number of faltering, now forgotten groups with other musicians, before consolidating their true power as a duo. 1984 saw the release of their debut album Rita Mitsouko, recorded with Krautrock producer Conny Plank. It was the fourth single release, "Marcia Baila", that first grabbed everyone's attention, selling over a million copies and becoming one of the most played songs in French broadcasting history. They were suddenly superstars in a parallel universe, as big in France as Duran Duran or Frankie Goes To Hollywood were in the UK, though across a slender stretch of water the Brits remained largely impervious to their charms. It should be noted that not all anglophones were immune to their collective genius: Sparks, Iggy Pop, and Serj Tankian of System of a Down are some of the giants of alternative rock who've collaborated with them over the years.

SES: Saboteur 12" (BBR 018EP)
The original freaks SES are back for another mind-melting EP called Saboteur. Completely tuned for a sweaty underground club system, the kicks in "Sounds Like" hit deeper than your typical sound-boy basslines of 2019. "Europa" is on some dystopian Kraftwerk Trans European Express tip with all the attitude you'd hope to squeeze into four-and-a-half minutes. "Hijacker" kicks off the B side with continuing paranoid themes of the SES back catalog. "Flesh Tone" simply jacks you in half and makes you throw shapes like it's 1989.

TELEFON TEL AVIV: Immolate Yourself LP (BPC 188LP)
This is the third full-length album by Chicago's Telefon Tel Aviv (Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper), and their first for BPitch Control. Immolate Yourself unites ten tracks with the aim to give the term "electro-pop" a new definition for the year 2009. Although each track has its own story to tell, together they paint a bigger picture that encapsulates the Telefon Tel Aviv sound. Arguably the album's standout track "Helen of Troy" -- a driving, moody and muddled piece, full of '80s aesthetics, vintage synths and low, romantic vocals -- was in fact the last track to be finished, and in a way, marked the climax and formed the basis of the whole work. With this release, Telefon Tel Aviv make a statement that combines popular dance music with their own darker reflections on the electronic sound universe.

TUCHSCHERER, LUKE: Carousel CD (CRUK 048CD)
Luke Tuchscherer, the Bedfordian singer/songwriter now based in New York City, is to release Carousel -- his fourth album in five years -- through Clubhouse Records. Carousel is a solo acoustic album, recorded live in the studio at Storybook Sound, Maplewood, New Jersey by Scott Anthony. Mixed and mastered by Chris Corney. Danny Tipping, of Clubhouse Records, says: "Following the success of Luke's previous full band albums it's a bold move to release an album as sparse as Carousel but it's a gamble that's paid off. In truth, I don't think Luke could resist marking his time on the East Cost by heading to New Jersey to record a lo-fi solo set just like another celebrated singer-songwriter. Maybe this is Luke's Nebraska!" Tuchscherer says: "After a rock record like Pieces last year, releasing the most stripped back album I'll ever make seemed the obvious thing to do! Seriously though, I have a nine-album plan. And ever since hearing The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, I've wanted to make a solo acoustic record. It had to be live in order to capture that feeling." As well as Dylan, Tuchscherer says Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, and Elliot Smith informed the album. Tuchscherer continues: "First and foremost it was about finding songs that could stand up on their own . . . And on top of that, I wanted it to fit a theme lyrically too. That approach meant that a lot of the songs I chose were actually pretty old. 'You Still Have My Heart' was written two weeks before recording and 'The Night Tom Petty Died' was written just after I'd moved to New York, before my wife had joined me . . . The oldest song is 'My Darling England', which was written when I was 21. We actually recorded a full band version of it for The Whybirds' Cold Blue Sky but didn't release it. However, with all the Brexit chaos, the song has actually become more prescient as time has gone by, so it seems like holding it back was for the best." Tuchscherer's previous Clubhouse effort, Pieces, was released in 2018 to critical acclaim, while Always Be True, released in 2017, reached #15 in the UK Country Chart and #25 in the Americana Chart.

VA: Amarcord Nino Rota CD (CVSD 051CD)
Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of Amarcord Nino Rota, a tribute album assembled by producer Hal Willner, originally released by Hannibal Records in 1981. If you think you know how to put a mix-tape together, take a lesson from Hal Willner, the absolute master. In 1981, Willner produced a landmark record of interpretations of music written by Nino Rota for the films of Federico Fellini. With ten tracks and as many different lineups, this record set the template for a series of brilliant tributes that Willner has made over the ensuing 35 years, covering the songbooks of Monk, Mingus, Weill, and Disney, with a mind-expanding range of performers from Eugene Chadbourne to Chuck D to Diamanda Galas to Peter Frampton. On Amarcord Nino Rota, Willner drew together an equally dazzling spectrum of musicians, compiling them into a perfect program that explores Rota's wonderful, sly, sexy oeuvre from contrasting and complementary perspectives. Pianist Jaki Byard sets the stage with the title track and ends things with "La Strada", and in his first appearance on record, guitarist Bill Frisell contributes a haunting solo acoustic version of "Juliet Of The Spirits". Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, who lived in Rome early in his international years, offers a take on Rota's "Roma" and vibraphonist Dave Samuels provides interludes and transitions in a couple of spots. On the other end of the size bracket, Muhal Richard Abrams arranges and conducts his band as part of "La Dolce Vita Suite", which ends with a rock group featuring Debbie Harry singing a wordless waltz. The Carla Bley Band presents a daunting, suitably hilarious version of "8 ½", with Gary Windo's ballistic tenor saxophone, a David Amram Quintet with Sharon Freeman on French horn plays "Satyricon", and in a surprise appearance, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis plays alongside his brother Branford, tenor saxophonist George Adams, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Wilbert Fletcher, in William Fischer's arrangement of a medley of Rota chestnuts. Long out-of-print on LP and only released on CD for a hot minute in the early nineties, Amarcord Nino Rota is a certifiable classic.

H: H CD (EK 085CD)
A weather station produces music: all antennas extended, barometers and thermometers on bearing. A mobile made of sound pipes tingles a modal hard-bop pattern in the wind tunnel, in dialog with a roaring screech of owls and rhythmically pounding hailstones... What kind of threatening backdrop is this? Something is wrong here. Nature is in trouble, or are the measuring instruments going crazy? In any case, that's not the kind of screech of an owl we know. The owl is evil, it is hungry! Mountain air does help. So does the high-altitude sun. Or... a bit of vitaminology. Of course, everything is completely different. The supposed weather station is the Echokammer, a studio biotope operated by Albert Pöschl in Munich Giesing. Leo Hopfinger (LeRoy) and Tom Simonetti (Mycrotom), went there to work on new tracks for their indie disco wild style duo Rhythm Police... and one of those lucky accidents happened, which scientists always rave about when they encounter a previously unknown substance. Just as Pöschl's namesake Albert Hofmann opened the gates of perception in a self-experiment, the three laboratory assistants Hopfinger/Pöschl/Simonetti came across the element H to see it roll out of the Rhythm Police in the splitting process of an isolated condensation -- hadn't there always been an "H" missing over the ten-year existence of the band name? Well then, H is there, and with the old name, the disco party is gone.

EMIKA: Falling In Love With Sadness Remixes 12" (EMK 002EP)
Emika releases a remix EP of her sixth studio album Falling In Love With Sadness (EMK 004CD/LP, 2018), originally released on World Mental Health Day October 2018. The remix EP explores four sound worlds in electronic music today. Experimental bass music, hypnotic and dark techno, and electro. Pinch, a pioneer of UK bass-driven music, is considered to be one of the most groundbreaking, explorative producers to emerge from the UK dubstep scene. Solid remixes from solid underground artists. Pinch creates a seductive environment for a scene from which could have been from David Fincher's Fight Club (1999), one which threatens to overload at any given time, but retains tension until the end. Rising techno star Julia Govor is an artist doing things differently, paving her own way with her own label, receiving recognition from the global dance music scene. Julia's mix transports you into the next part of the journey, beyond conflict and tension, she gives you the chance to breathe, open up, be free and to dance. Rebekah needs no introduction, pioneering her own intense sound, she is a serious artist with some seriously heavy vibes. Rebekah's remix brings us hurtling back down to Earth at a tremendous pace, with crystal clear drums that wake up the soul and synths that energize the mind, this version is more than a dark techno track, it has the spirit of a self-confident grown woman running through it. Underground Berlin talent Headless Horseman, all though shrouded in mystery, is in high-demand worldwide to perform his unique live sets at some of the biggest clubs and festivals. Headless Horseman brings Emika's original into a beautiful new song space, re-voicing the harmony and finding completely fresh chords and backing. Emika produced original album material with cult electro icon The Exaltics. The artwork hits the mark with a message important for Emika: Equality. ORAM/VERA GRAY, DAPHNE: Listen Move & Dance LP (OME 1023LP)
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Daphne Oram and Vera Gray's Listen Move & Dance, originally released in 1962. The British composer, musician, and audio engineer Daphne Oram was a pioneering figure in the use of electronic music. Coming to prominence through her work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, which she co-founded, Oram was one of the first British composers to feature electronic instruments in her work and has been rightly hailed as helping musique concrete to become accepted in Britain. Oram's composition "Still Point", involving two orchestras, two turntables and five microphones, was deemed too radical by the BBC, though she was promoted to studio manager in 1950, leading to the gradual introduction of electronic music and musique concrete techniques on BBC soundtracks. In 1957, she composed the music for the play Amphitryon 38, using a sine wave oscillator and homemade filters, and this and other subsequent works led to the establishment of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop the following year, but Oram soon tired of the conservative constraints of the BBC, leading to her resignation in 1959 to pursue her own vision at the Oramics Studios for Electronic Composition, located in Tower Folly, a former hop kiln located at Fairseat, near the village of Wrotham in rural Kent. "Oramics" was a radical sound composition technique that sought to transform images to music, enacted by drawing onto 35mm film, which would then be read by photo-electric cells; in addition to its use in Radiophonic Workshop material, "Oramics" was also employed for sound installations, theater productions, and feature films, such as The Innocents, though financial pressures forced Oram to seek a range of commercial engagements in addition to creating her own artistic works. The Listen Move & Dance series of BBC programs were devised as a radical new technique to help British schoolchildren learn how to dance; on the LP releases, Vera Gray arranged short adaptations of classical pieces by Bartok, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and others, designed for "stamping, punching, kicking and jumping" movements, as well as "running lightly", "dancing on toes" and "shaking all about", which contrasted sharply with Oram's electronic abstractions, which seemed to have been beamed in from outer space. 180 gram vinyl.

BERIO/PIERRE BOULEZ/OLIVIER MESSIAEN/KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN, LUCIANO: Serenata I/Sonatine/Canteyodjaya/Zeitmasze LP (OME 1024LP)
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Serenata I/Sonatine/Canteyodjaya/Zeitmasze, originally released in 1958. The avant-garde composer and conductor Pierre Boulez was a titan of post-war experimental classical music. Born in the small cheesemaking town of Montrbrison in central France in 1925, Boulez studied at the Paris Conservatoire with the composer and organist Charles Messiaen and received private tuition from pianist Andrée Vaurabourg; after moving to the Marais district in 1945, he briefly studied with Schoenberg disciple, René Leibowitz, and further influence came from immersion in Balinese gamelan, Japanese classical music, and African drumming, among other sources. Earning money by playing an early electronic keyboard called the Ondes Martenot on theater productions, Boulez soon became music director of the Renaud-Barrault Theatre Company, leading to tours of Belgium, Switzerland, Britain, and both North and South America. American composer John Cage became an ally, though they subsequently clashed over Cage's commitment to the role of chance in his compositions, paving the way for an intense and lasting friendship with the German composer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, who arrived in Paris in 1952 to study with Olivier Messiaen. In July of that year, the pair attended the International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt, leading to contact with Italian composer Luciano Berio and other noteworthy figures. Then, in 1954, with backing from Barrault and Renaud, Boulez began staging a series of concerts of experimental music at the Petit Marigny Theatre, titled Le Domaine musical. The pieces collected on this album are all taken from performances staged for the 1957 Domaine musical season, beginning with Berio's "Serenata I", conducted by Boulez, which debuted in Paris in March of that year; arranged for flute and fourteen instruments, Berio said that the idea behind the piece was for the solo flute to be confronted by continuously interchanging elements, rather than mere accompaniments or oppositions. Boulez's own "Sonatine", composed in 1946 for flute and piano, is a 12-tone piece that evidences Messiaen's influence, with shades of Asian classical music in places; then, Stockhausen's monumental "Zeitmasze" (or "Time Measures") a serial composition for five woodwinds, played in different combinations of tempos and speed, was partly inspired by Webern's principles of homogenous and harmonic textures. Finally, Messiaen's 1949 work "Cantéyodjayâ", delivered by pianist Yvonne Loriod, takes it shape from the classical Hindu rhythms of ancient India, as with much of the composer's oeuvre. 180 gram vinyl.

VA: Speech After The Removal Of The Larynx LP (OME 1025LP)
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Speech After The Removal Of The Larynx, originally released by Smithsonian Folkways in 1964. The larynx or voice box is a small organ located towards the top of the neck in humans and some other animals. Constructed largely of cartilage, it houses the vocal folds that allow for the manipulation of pitch and volume, which are essential for the phonation of spoken speech. It is also involved in bringing air to the lungs when you breathe and it protects the windpipe when you swallow. However, those unfortunate to experience the potentially fatal malignant tumors of laryngeal cancer will have their larynx removed, resulting in a traumatic loss of speech; thankfully, as this rare record issued by Smithsonian Folkways in 1964 demonstrates, removal of the larynx does not necessarily spell the end of speech for such blighted individuals. Instead, through developments in artificial voice creation, patients could learn to employ modes of vocal communication again. The album was recorded by physician Harm A. Drost at the Phonetic Laboratory of the Ear, Nose, and Throat Dept. of the University Hospital, Leiden, in the Netherlands, working under the direction of Professor H. A. E. van Dishoeck. As the advances were fairly new and surprisingly varied, Drost felt a phonograph album demonstrating the techniques would be useful for those in the field. The album thus features a narrator explaining aspects of several different techniques, followed by examples of patients employing them. Buccal speech (limited to certain consonants), parabuccal speech (collecting air in a space between the upper jaw and the cheek), glosso-pharyngeal speech (a method deemed obsolete where air is forced between the tongue and the palate), esophageal voice (made by reconditioning one's esophagus via swallowing, suction, or injection), various injection techniques and devices such as the larynxophone, pipa di tichioni, and "western electric" are all explored here, along with other aspects of the larynx and its absence. Speech After The Removal Of The Larynx is definitely one of the strangest albums ever given a commercial release. 180 gram vinyl; includes insert; hand-numbered.

DRUICK, DWIGHT: Tanger LP (FVR 158LP)
LP version. Favorite Recordings present a reissue of Dwight Druick's Tanger, originally released in 1980. Dwight Druick was born in Montreal to a professional gambler and an ex-Radio City Rockette. One of five children, he grew up in a family buoyed by music and beleaguered by the vagaries of miscalculated risk. After attaining a McGill University bachelor's degree in Art History, Dwight fully embraced both music and risk by traveling to London, where he signed a contract with Pye Records and Joe Cocker's management company. The ensuing record, Druick & Lorange (1974), was released to critical acclaim and relative success. After returning to Canada, Dwight recorded two albums with Phil Vyvial: Midnight (1979) and Minuit (!979). Recorded with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section in Alabama, the duo's work achieved airplay success in Quebec and across Canada. Dwight subsequently released his first French language solo album, Tanger, released in 1980 by the Canadian label, Bobinason. Today quite hard to find in its original version, Tanger is first of all an incredibly solid album, clearly underrated and deserving more credit. Mostly known by collectors and DJs for the stunning cover of Toto's classic hit, "Georgy Porgy", which was produced and arranged with the help of George Thurston (Boule Noire), it includes many other tasty titles, with amongst them another fine rendition of "Open Your Eyes" by The Doobie Brothers. In fact, with its brilliant mix of modern-soul, disco, and AOR styles, the whole album is already considered by many connoisseurs as a classic, and clearly a must have for anyone enjoying this musical blend. Never reissued on vinyl until now, there was not much more needed at Favorite Recordings to make it happened. Officially licensed to Dwight Druick, who was unfortunately not able to provide the original tapes, Tanger has been perfectly restored and remastered by Frank Merritt, at The Carvery, London.

ST. JOHN, BRIDGET: Live at the Betsey Trotwood LP (FTR 474LP)
Co-release with Shagrat Records. "Fifty years after her elegantly enchanting debut LP, Ask Me No Questions, was issued by John Peel's Dandelion label, Bridget St. John releases her first live vinyl. About time! In the intervening decades, Ms. St. John issued four gorgeous LPs during the 1970s, then had a quiet spell after moving to the U.S. In the '90s a sequence of crucial archival recordings on John Tobler's Road Goes on Forever label, as well as Nigel Cross's peerless Shagrat imprint started appearing. She began playing live again as well, appearing at Phil McMullen's Boston Terrastock among other places. With the release of Live at the Betsey Trotwood, Bridget demonstrates to all and sundry that her musical powers are undiminished. Beautifully recorded at the Betsey in London, the set mixes newer originals ('Castaway', 'The Hole in Your Heart', etc.) with classics from her repertoire ('Fly High', 'Ask Me No Questions') and some lovely covers. These range from Joni Mitchell's 'The Fiddle and the Drum' segueing into a Trump-informed version of 'America the Beautiful', to a sweet take on Michael Chapman's 'Rabbit Hills' (from Fully Qualified Survivor). Listening to this set, I am actually reminded of Chapman (with whom Bridget has been touring recently). Both of them seem to be ever advancing, their voices growing richer and stronger as they accrue experience, the beauty and power of their guitar playing diminishing not one whit. We are extremely honored to present a new LP by Bridget St. John, and truly believe it will slay you as fully as it did us." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 500.

MAERCKS, OWEN: Kinds of Blue LP (FTR 478LP)
"Four decades after his last solo LP, Teenage Sex Therapist (FTR 153-2LP), Owen Maercks is back with a new one. Crazily, much of the same gang is on hand for Kinds of Blue. Guitarist Henry Kaiser was even the instigator of this project (as he so often is), suggesting it was time for Owen to cut the blues album they'd always talked about. Saxophonists Larry Ochs (ROVA) and John Oswald (Plunderphonics) are also back to blow gorgeous squalls. There's a new rhythm section in town -- Doug Sovern on bass and Scott Amendola on drums -- and they sound great, laying down whatever sounds are required as a base for the most-cracked blues wailing of Owen's guitar and vocals. The choice of cover tunes should be read as some sort of key. Lonesome Sundown's "Love Me Now" replaces some of its original swamp vibe with an approach one might liken to Bobby "Blue" Bland's sophisto-hunch. "Blue Monk" is a wonderfully fractured spin on a par with Chadbourne's visits to the Thelonious songbook. And Robert Pete Williams' "Wrong" hews to its original acoustic and violent intent, although it also manifests a few lateral spasms that might have given its author gout. The originals are similarly eclectic. "Wild Time" is a full-on blast of guitar-based zonkery. "Burnin'" is Hooker shuffle that will have your foot stomping involuntarily. "Beautiful to Me" is alternate universe songsterism in the vein of Sex Therapist. "Iceland Boogie" is the first known blues song to tackle the topic of Reykjavik's archaic gambling laws, using a somewhat Beefheartian framework to do so. And "Prayin' on Me" finishes the album with an extended display of different ways to sing and play about blowjobs, which should provide a template for any young band interested in the bj genre. Is there a coda? You tell me. How many kinds of blue can one man have? The varieties are endless, dear friends. And some of the best answers ever posited to that question are now available on this handy platter." --Byron Coley, 2019. Edition of 500.

LEFT OUTSIDES, THE: There Is a Place LP (FTR 496LP)
"A new reissue of this masterpiece by the Left Outsides, originally issued on cassette in 2015, then first put to vinyl in 2017, as the long-format follow-up to the classic The Shape of Things to Come LP. The current edition is demarcated by a glossy cover and metallic gold printing. Its music remains as timeless a gust of dark autumnal wind as any you'll ever hear. Some of the music here was written as part of the soundtrack to Gus Alavrez's 2009 noir-pastoral short, Stand and Deliver, but the songs evoke their own host of images. The band, consisting of Alison Cotton and Mark Nicholas (once of the beautifully Fairport-tinged, 18th Day of May) blend vocals and stringed instruments in a way that recalls more traditional UK folk artists as much as it does their more acidic contemporaries. Their songs feature gorgeously plain melodies that emerge as though they have always existed, before disappearing in a swirl of primeval mist. The surprise cover they do, "Civil War Lament" (originally by Go-Betweens side project, Jack Frost), is of a piece with these originals. And the layered guitars of the last track, "The Creeping Fog," take the record out on waves of drone and feedback stretching from dusk until near dawn, at which point, Alison intones a poem of shadows. There Is a Place is a gentle monster of a record, and will well reward your careful attention." --Byron Coley, 2019 45rpm; Edition of 300.

LOS PIRANAS: Historia Natural CD (GB 081CD)
A celebrated instrumental supergroup featuring three of Bogotá's most visionary musicians: Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers, Chúpame el dedo), Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero, Ondatropica), and Pedro Ojeda (Romperayo, Chúpame el dedo). Fusing the experimental possibilities of South American rhythms and sonics (cumbia, champeta, tropicalia, salsa, and more) with avant psych rock, dub minimalism, and spiked jazz, Los Pirañas are retro-futurism at its finest. The three members of Los Pirañas can all remember when they were in high school together in Bogotá, Colombia and just beginning to play music. Twenty-five years on and they've become internationally well-known musicians, spread across different bands, traversing multiple continents. Historia Natural, their third album, recaptures the spirit that moved them as teenagers. Although they'd played music together when young, Los Pirañas only came into being as a band in 2009. It gave them the chance to explore the complex vitality of Colombian rhythms mixed with Alvarez's unique blend of computer and guitar. Their debut release as Los Pirañas showcased the joys of "the trio format that was new to us," while the band's second release La Diversión Que Hacía Falta En Mi País (STAUB 145LP, 2017) came after a few years of touring. For their third outing they went searching for a nuanced naïveté and they found it, with Ojeda's adroit drumming and the muscular bass work of Mario Galeano of Frente Cumbiero fame, providing a solid anchor for the music. Together, the pair create a mighty tropical noise that frees up Alvarez for his guitar experiments. He's been working with computers and music for two decades, feeding his guitar through a laptop. Alvarez's guitar is a shapeshifter, constantly mutating sound and texture. It rarely sounds straight up, but there's never a doubt that someone is plucking the strings and bending the notes. Alvarez darts around and through the lines created by Ojeda and Galeano, leading or snapping at their heels. This is a band bristling with ideas, where the unspoken communication is so acute that all three of them can swerve together or turn on a dime. Their particular culture revolves very much around Colombia's capital, Bogotá, where they live and where they've always made music. A swirling, electric universe of music, created right in their own neighborhood. That's the real Historia Natural of Los Pirañas.

BABA ZULA: Derin Derin CD (GB 082CD)
BaBa ZuLa, the legendary ensemble from Istanbul, have brilliantly established themselves over the past two decades as the missing link between Turkish psych, krautrock, and dub-wise stylings. Derin Derin is the thrilling follow-up to their acclaimed retrospective XX (GB 042CD/LP, 2017), and finds the band more experimental and expansive than ever. On Derin Derin, BaBa ZuLa's first studio album since 2014, they create their art with beautiful eloquence and stinging passion. It takes wing and soars high; the instrumental portion of the disc grew out of music BaBa ZuLa were asked to record for a documentary about falcons. It grew, little by little, drawing together the elements that have been the heart of the band's sound throughout its existence: the rich wildness of Turkish psychedelia and the blinding, pure emotion that runs through traditional Anatolian music, tempered with the constant musical questing of the band's inspiration, krautrock pioneers Can, and the electro-dub experiments BaBa ZuLa has undertaken with producer Mad Professor. It's an utterly 21st century sound, where the voices are sometimes submerged, sometimes screaming loud to breaking through the noise. "U Are the Swing" is a track that carries particularly profound echoes of Can's late drummer, Jaki Liebezeit. The drum part was played by Ertel's children on a kit Liebezeit himself had modified, and Liebezeit sat in with BaBa ZuLa on many occasions. Those rhythms form the bedrock of BaBa ZuLa's sound, just as they were the foundation of the early Turkish psychedelia of the 1960s and '70s that has been a lifelong influence on Ertel. Psychedelia seeped into his soul and helped to frame his vision for BaBa ZuLa when he formed the band in 1996. And throughout their existence, they've kept their unique mix of electric saz and electric oud to give that double fretboard attack that's so markedly not Western. The psychedelic sound of BaBa ZuLa also feeds quite organically into dub. On "Eagle Got Wolf", for instance, phrases and riffs echo and hang suspended in the air as the bass dives and swoops, while plucked notes appear, only to flicker away again. Derin Derin melds the past into the present and sends it flying into the future. Derin Derin is fearless music. It's the truth. And there is hope.

SLIKBACK: Lasakaneku / Tomo 2LP (HK 014LP)
Ascendant star of the new global underground, Slikback wraps up his first two digital-only EPs with three killer bonus cuts on a vinyl premiere for Hakuna Kulala, his prized sublabel of Nyege Nyege Tapes. Hailing from Nairobi, Kenya via Kampala, Uganda, Slikback has rapidly attracted a wave of attention to his undulating mutations of current club styles, as found on the Lasakaneka and Tomo EPs between 2018-2019. Due to popular demand both those EPs now make their vinyl debut, packaged along with three previously unreleased zingers to weigh in the most significant showcase of Slikback's acclaimed style and pattern in club circulation right now. Distilling a range of inspirations from local East African hip hop to Congolese rhythms and Gqom's cold percussion, plus influence from US trap and footwork, and the subbass common to JA and UK soundsystem cultures; Slikback's music has arrived at a grippingly powerful sound which, while singular, is also entirely symptomatic of the thrilling styles emerging from Central Africa right now, and after many years of underrepresentation in the shadow of West and South African styles which have been popularized around the world. On his debut Lasakaneka EP, Slikback swaggers from icy, robotic dancehall in "Acid" to a gripping fusion of footwork and Gqom with a jungle bent in "Bantu Zen", and dancehall techno drill on "Ascension", along with the palpitating footwork pressure of "Venom", and a nervy new ace in the itchy step of "Shell". The follow-up of 2019's Tomo meanwhile represents a mean progression of his sound; exerting a firmer control of his scudding bass rudeness in "Sonshitsu", and the dissonant synth tone of "Gemini", while the syncopated gabber styles of "Zuhura" and "Rage" give way to almighty exclusive joints in the hard seam of trap called "Kite", and the Equiknoxx-gone-psycho styles of "Senshi". If you're new to Slikback, trust this double-LP is the perfect place to get acquainted with his lucid, hi-tech madness, before checking for the full-frontal futurism of his two new EPs in collaboration with Svbkvlt's Hyph11e, Yen Tech, and Osheyack. But if you've already heard Slikback's EPs, his Boiler Room at Nyege Nyege Festival, or witnessed his European tour dates, there's surely no need to overstate the crucial nature of this "early years" double-LP compilation. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Purple vinyl; edition of 500.

JERKCURB: Air Con Eden CD (HD 020CD)
South East London songwriter and visual artist Jerkcurb has today announced his hotly-anticipated debut album Air Con Eden. The culmination of several years of intense creative focus, Air Con Eden reflects on Jerkcurb instigator Jacob Read's recent real-life events, losses and tragedies as well as more cryptic, fictitious perspectives, and surreal adopted personalities. The record's euphoric lead single "Timelapse Tulip" arrives alongside today's news -- accompanied by a stunning, intricate 3D animated video courtesy of a collaboration between Read, director Gilbert Bannerman, and production designer Theo Boswell. Having fully emerged in 2016 with the flourishing "Night On Earth" -- a streaming hit with 2,700,000 spins to date -- and subsequent tracks "Voodoo Saloon" and "Little Boring Thing", there's been a growing sense of an artist climbing into maturity with each succeeding release, video and gig laying the foundations for Jerkcurb's burgeoning cult status. Indeed, Read has been heavily immersed in his art and animation all the while, exhibiting at the Tate Britain and also being commissioned by them to create a promo for their installation "Aftermath: Art in the Wake of World War One" and drawing praise from "It's Nice That" along the way. There's a near impossible richness to Read's songwriting form on Air Con Eden, with its as-yet-unheard title track offering perhaps the clearest distillation of the record's predominant theme: time at its malleable and fraught. Inspired by Victor Gruen -- the pioneering designer of shopping malls in the United States -- Read unpacks the idea of being trapped in an eternity that feels like an endless present tense, the passing of the seasons reduced to a standstill in a pristine shopping mall; a symbol of both stasis and comfort; an Eden without the possibility of an ending.

OSADEBE, CHIEF STEPHEN OSITA: Osondi Owendi LP (HMRLP 007LP)
"Osondi Owendi. What is cherished by some is despised by others. One man's meat is another man's poison. Different strokes for different folks. To each their own. Osondi Owendi. It's a conventional aphorism in the Igbo language but if you utter the word 'osondi owendi' in Nigeria today, the first thing that comes to anybody's mind is the cucumber-cool highlife music maestro Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and his legendary album that takes its name from the adage. Released in 1984, Osondi Owendi was instantly received as Osadebe's magnum opus, the crowning event of an exalted career stretching back to the early years of highlife's emergence as Nigeria's predominant popular music. Stephen Osadebe first appeared on the music scene in 1958 as a spry, twenty-two year-old vocalist in the Empire Rhythm Skies Orchestra, directed by bandleader Steven Amechi. With his dapper suits, urbane Nat King Cole-influenced vocal stylings and jaunty, up-tempo, calypso-scented dance tunes, he personified the frisky spirit and anxious aspirations of a young, educated generation that had come of age in the wake of the Second World War . . . 1959 would be the year that he truly made his mark in the business with his debut solo single 'Lagos Life Na So So Enjoyment'. A giddy exhortation of the music, sex, fun and freedom availed by life in the big city, the song became a sensation and an anthem, and Stephen Osadebe became the leader of his own popular dance band, the Nigerian Sound Makers . . . As Nigeria emerged from a devastating civil war, so did a new generation of youth inspired by rock and funk, confrontational sounds reflective of a more violent, less idealistic era. All of the sudden, the idioms of the post-WWII dance orchestras that nurtured Osadebe's cohort seemed quaint, the stuff of nostalgia. Osadebe needed to evolve to respond to the new tumultuous, turned-up times . . . Abetted by a new crop of fire-blooded young players, Osadebe slowed his music to a mellow, meditative tempo, brought forward the lumbering, Afro Cuban-accented bass and percussion, from the rockers he borrowed searing lead lines on the electric guitar. Over this musical bedrock, doesn't so much as sing as he dreamily muses, coos, sighs aphorisms, words of wisdom and inspiration . . . Osadebe christened the style oyolima -- a tranquil, otherworldly state of total relaxation and pleasure. Osondi Owendi represents oyolima at its finest, and possibly Nigerian highlife in epitome." --Uchenna Ikonne, June 2019

MUSIC IMPROVISATION COMPANY: 1969, 1970 2LP (HJR 209LP)
"The original concepts of vocal and instrumental music are utterly different. The instrumental impulse is not melody in a 'melodious' sense but an agile movement of the hands which seem to be under the control of a brain center totally different from that which inspires vocal melody. Altogether, instrumental music, with the exception of rudimentary rhythmic percussion, is as a rule a florid, fast and brilliant display of virtuosity... Quick motion is not merely a means to a musical end but almost an end in itself which always connects with the fingers, the wrists and the whole of the body."

The inclusion of the above passage from Curt Sachs's The Wellsprings of Music with this album, the recording of which predates the Music Improvisation Company's only other release, the eponymous ECM outing, indicates a clear intention to stake out territory for European free improvisation markedly different from that of the (American) free jazz it sprang from. The African-American heritage that led to jazz was melodious, vocal, field holler/church-inflected, and the Germans and the Dutch never made any secret of their affection for it, but British free improvisers in the late 1960s were looking elsewhere. Even so, and though the music press made a big deal a while back about the release of a 1965 rehearsal tape by Derek Bailey's earlier Joseph Holbrooke trio (with Gavin Bryars and Tony Oxley), their early efforts were mere tentative steps along a cliff edge wearing a line safely attached to Coltrane, and there's still a faint but distinct aftertaste of jazz in Bailey and Parker's work with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble up to and including 1968's Karyōbin (1993). But with the addition of Jamie Muir -- the first great free improvising percussionist who didn't start out as a jazz drummer -- and Hugh Davies and his electronics from way out leftfield in the avant-garde/experimental world, the MIC leapt right off that cliff. As Nina Hagen screamed later, "1968 is over! Future is Now!" These six tracks -- tight, electric, pointillistic, brilliant, uncompromising and exhilarating -- sound like nothing else that came before. In a word, seminal. Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

PADE, ELSE MARIE: Electronic Works 1958-1995 3LP (IMPREC 406LP)
Restocked; triple LP version. Pressed on audiophile grade heavy duty vinyl. Else Marie Pade, born in 1924 in Denmark, is a precious golden gem in the world of contemporary electro-acoustic music. She is a true pioneer of electronic music and musique concrète. Pade is Denmark's first lady of electronic music and her piece "Syv Cirkler (Seven Circles)" became the first electronic piece performed on Danish radio. Pade's fascination with sound began in early childhood. Isolated in her bed for long periods due to illness, she began listening and intensively observing the sounds around her. As a teenager being imprisoned for spying on Nazi compounds in Arhus, she had a similar experience of isolation and sharpening her awareness of sound. Once released from prison, she became a piano student at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen. When she was introduced to Pierre Schaeffer in 1952, she instead chose to pursue the nuances of her inner sound-world. Shortly after beginning her studies with Schaeffer, she had her first electronic composition premiered in 1958. Else Marie Pade's Electronic Works 1958-1995 is a three LP set of Pade's most important compositions which was restored, mastered, and cut at Dubplates & Mastering in 2014 in Berlin under the watchful ears of curator Jacob Kirkegaard. These monumental works are presented, for the first time, pressed on audiophile-grade heavy-duty vinyl. "The sounds outside became concrète music, and in the evening I could imagine that the stars and the moon and the sky uttered sounds and those turned into electronic music." --Else Marie Pade

WAGNER, VANESSA: Inland 2LP (IF 1050LP)
Double LP version. Includes a bonus track: Philip Glass's "Etude n°5". Inland is Vanessa Wagner's continuation of the exploration of the minimalist composers register to complete the solo continuum of the Statea released in 2016 with the Mexican producer Murcof. Inland highlights a set of pieces, mostly rare or unavailable to date (Moondog, Nico Muhly, William Susman, Bryce Dessner, Gavin Bryars...) and some other well known (Philip Glass, Wim Mertens, Michael Nyman) that Vanessa Wagner performs with her classic pianist background and velvet sound. The title of the album refers to John Cage's Imaginary Landscape (1939), one of the first works to use electronic devices. Making more with less, the album turns long harmonies into multicolored prisms, miniature detailed embroidery, sighs and breaths, syncopated or restrained chants. The choice of works and their sequencing was dreamed up as a sort of storytelling. Between familiar melodies and unknown rarities, the pianist dug deep to find previously unreleased pieces. Within the cornucopia of Wagner's career, Inland stands as a hitherto unknown intimate and dream-like space. The album is both the fruit of her maturity and a new temporality that she is now exploring -- a secret conversation between her spirituality and the deep connection she maintains with nature, the elements, and living matter. The Inland journey begins with the vision of iconoclastic Moondog, who claudicates over a modest ritornello, and continues with French composer Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch's "Louella", like a volatile caress. On the way, you come across familiar figures like Philip Glass, and rediscover Michael Nyman's "The Heart Asks Pleasure First", as Wagner's fingers transfigure the cult piece, rendering it with delicate sensuality. At the origin of the source, German composer Hans Otte plays entrancing magic tricks with the fluids that spring henceforth; on the horizon, the inescapable Meredith Monk draws you into her hypnotic circles; elsewhere, Bryce Dessner is takes you on a dream-filled odyssey with characters who guide you to boundless territories, and William Susman breaks down boundaries under the harmonic mists and mute rhythms of "Quiet Rhythms". At the end, you find a blank canvas of quiet nature, a clearing in which Latvian composer Peteris Vasks invites you to listen to the suspended silences. When the album is over, the spirit of Inland continues to stir inside the listener's mind, in hazy reverie, clouds of nostalgia emanate from Vanessa Wagner's piano.

DAL FORNO, CARLA: Look Up Sharp CD (KALLISTA 001CD)
Carla dal Forno announces her second full-length album, Look Up Sharp, on her own Kallista records. Dal Forno beckons a bold new era in her peerless output pushing her dub-damaged DIY dispatches to the limits of flawless dream-pop. In a transformative move towards crystal clear vocals and sharpened production, Look Up Sharp is an evolutionary leap from the thick fog and pastoral stillness of her Blackest Ever Black missives, You Know What It's Like (BLACKEST 015CD/LP, 2016) and The Garden EP (BLACKEST 068EP, 2017). Three years since her plain-speaking debut album, the Melbourne-via-Berlin artist finds herself absorbed in London's sprawling mess. The small-town dreams and inertia that preoccupied dal Forno's first album have dissolved into the chaotic city, its shifting identities, far-flung surroundings and blank faces. Look Up Sharp is the story of this life in flux, longing for intimacy, falling short and embracing the unfamiliar. In her own territory between plaintive pop, folk and post-punk dal Forno conjures the ghosts of AC Marias, Virginia Astley, and Broadcast through her brushwork of art-damaged fx and spectral atmospheres. The first half of the record is filled with dubbed-out humid bass lines, which tether stoned hazes of psychedelic synth work, as on "Took A Long Time" and "No Trace". These are contrasted with songs like "I'm Conscious" and "So Much Better" that channel the lilting power of YMG and are clear sequels-in-waiting to dead-eyed classics like "Fast Moving Cars". The second half begins with the feverish bass and meandering melody of "Don't Follow Me", which takes The Cure's "A Forest" as its conceptual springboard. It's the clearest lyrical example since "The Garden" of dal Forno's unmatched ability to unpick the masculine void of post-punk and new wave nostalgia to reflect contemporary nuance. Look Up Sharp reaches its satisfying conclusion with "Push On" -- dal Forno's most explicit foray into an undiscovered trip hop universe between Massive Attack and Tracey Thorn. Adding further depth to Look Up Sharp are the instrumentals, which flow seamlessly between the vocal-led pieces. "Hype Sleep" and "Heart of Hearts" drink from the same stream as The Flying Lizard's dubbed-out madness and the vivid purple sunsets of Eno's Another Green World (1975). While "Creep Out of Bed" and "Leaving For Japan" funnel the fourth-world psychedelia of Cyclobe's industrial-folk into the vortex of Nico's The Marble Index (1968). A deeply personal but infinitely relatable album its many surfaces are complex but authentic, enduring but imperfect, hard-edged but delicate.

FEJKA: Reunion CD (KI 024CD)
Creating an album is a journey of self-knowledge through hindsight; putting together the tracks that will compose the oeuvre much like putting together a photo album. It involves reflecting over the memorable times that inspired each composition. That is the case for German electronic music producer and visual artist Fejká, who presents Reunion. Like with everything that involves hindsight, there is a great deal of nostalgia in the album -- and the nature of nostalgia is fluid. It can be at once sweet or melancholic, agitated, or mellow, airy or heavy, but it nonetheless invokes in all its forms a sentimental longing for something. In Reunion, nostalgia is primarily given shape in dreamlike soundscapes, soft atmospheres that nonetheless evoke strong contemplative feelings. This longing is carefully unfolded on "Youth", where a simple melody plays out over the sound of seagulls and develops effortlessly into a joyful tune. Since his EP Twilight (2017), the producer has been exploring sounds that are at once ethereal and dynamic, celestial but also very much grounded on the dancefloor. In a seamless way, Fejká crafts music that is equally suitable for introspective moods and wonders as it is for a club. But while Twilight explored this duality between dreamlike atmospheres and dance music, Reunion seems to delve into a much vaster range of emotions and approaches, cementing the young producer's eclecticism. "Untold", perhaps the most fast-tempo title of the album with punctuated beats and repetitive melodies, is not only a dance tune, but a highly emotive and contemplative song which plays out like a riddle, provoking feelings of quest and curiosity. The track couldn't be more different than "Reunion" which moves slowly and carries an ethereal melody of melancholy and insight. Another tool used on Reunion that hits hard on an emotional level, is the use of the voice. On "Reunion", friend and musician Marie Angerer contributes with haunting vocals. Putting together the album was a journey of self-knowledge, creating ten purely intuitive tracks. Having a visceral creative process means that inspiration could hit at anytime, anywhere; drafting sketches became an important way in which Fejká would capture those revelations. From then, Fejká would develop these sketches in his laptop -- a basic set-up which nonetheless permitted him to take his ideas far. The strength of the album's tracks is deeply tied to their ability to capture a mood, and convey it to the listener. Also features Rökurró.

UNKNOWN ARTIST: Cliff 12" (MSK 005EP)
The elusive Berlin label Mask are back with another anonymous release featuring four, analog-driven tracks entitled Cliff. Known for being purveyors of mysterious yet exquisite hardware induced tracks, Mask continue to hold up their reputation following on from Hunter (MSK 004EP) that picked up support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Elena Colombi, Machine Woman, Anastasia Kristensen, and DJ Deep. Cliff involves four people live jamming on analog equipment in a Berlin based studio. A1 begins with crunchy drums fused with revolving, modulated synths and obscure elements that are soaked in acid flavors before the A2 focuses on an electro-tinged sequence in harmony with ominous atmospherics and eccentric oscillations. On the flip, sweeping pads balanced with intense kicks and washing synths take the focus on the B1 until the B2 rounds off this magical EP with wavering compositions, hard-hitting percussion and unsettling sound design keeping the atmosphere intense yet truly absorbing.

KELTERBORN, RUDOLF: Ensemble-Buch I - Musik mit 5 Trios - Gesange zur Nacht CD (NEOS 11903CD)

In addition to his extensive teaching activities, he has served as the chief editor at Schweizerische Musikzeitung, director of the Musik-Akademie Basel, and head of the music department for the Swiss-German radio service. His compositional oeuvre is wide-ranging, internationally recognized, and has been awarded numerous prizes and distinctions. This CD contains "Ensemble-Buch I" (Ensemble-Book I) (1990) and "Gesänge zur Nacht" (Songs to the Night) (1978), two important vocal works based on texts by Erika Burkhart and Ingeborg Bachmann. Kelterborn composed "Musik mit 5 Trios" (Music with 5 Trios) in 2016/17 for Musikkollegium Winterthur, dedicating the work to the ensemble's chief conductor, Pierre-Alain Monot.

OFENBAUER, CHRISTIAN: Zwei Frankfurter Preludes CD (NEOS 11905CD)
Zwei Frankfurter Préludes (Two Frankfurt Préludes) presents a live recording of the twos première given on November 19, 1999 with the hr Sinfonieorchester conducted by Arturo Tamayo. The titles of these works are nearly identical ("Two Cranes and Clouds" and "Two Cranes and Clouds / Double") and are conceptually related, though they could hardly be more different. One is based on an extreme accumulation of density over about a minute and a half, while the other explores a radical expansion in both time and space. Each work is scored for large orchestra and the second of them, which lasts some 50 minutes, positions the musicians along a diagonal line that bisects the performance space.

DI SCIPIO, AGOSTINO: Works for Strings and Live Electronics CD (NEOS 11910CD)
Italian composer Agostino di Scipio closely investigates ways to incorporate electronics with music. He is primarily interested in mutual influences between instrument, live electronics, and space. To process sound, he uses a variety of methods, in which conventional analog technologies can play as much of a role as cutting-edge computer programs, electronic sound processing of a simple pitched pizzicato sample, or experimental playing techniques on string instruments. Di Scipio is a professor of electroacoustic composition in L'Aquila. His compositions and sound installations are presented worldwide and are internationally recognized as outstanding contributions to current experimental music and sound art.

BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN: Bach today: Stefan Keller & Beda Ehrensperger play Bach and beyond CD (NEOS 41901CD)
Bach today, "Baroque classics in a groovy jazz style". Bach today offers a colorful, versatile and multifaceted program. Well-known works for the flute by J.S. Bach and his son C.P.E. Bach form the basis for the CD. Through the filigree groovy background of the highly virtuosic baroque pieces by the experienced percussionist and enriched with astonishing improvisations, these "baroque classics" appear in a completely new light and are very contemporary.

Stefan Keller is an internationally active flutist. He plays a broad spectrum of music styles on different instruments, as is apparent from his wide-ranging projects and invitations to flute festivals. Boundary-crossing offerings like "Under Water", "Carpenter", "Factory", and others attest to his rich variety of concert music and performance activities, from a yodel choir in a carpentry workshop, to computer animations in the church, to a welder in a factory, or an indoor swimming pool in "unter Wasser". Unusual combinations such as flute and contrabass, flute and percussion or flute and live electronics also appear. Keller's artistic work has been generously supported by the Aargauer Kuratorium multiple times. He has had residencies in Aargau's ateliers in Paris and Berlin. As a flutist, he specializes in low and extremely low flutes like the alto, bass, contrabass and subcontrabass.

At the tender age of five, Beda Ehrensperger was already honing his drumming skills on his mother's pots and pans. He began his first lessons after his uncle gave him a percussion set as a present. At eight he had his first band. During his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts, Ehrensperger dedicated himself to Jazz, which provided him with a link to African rhythms. He felt compelled to move to Ghana, where he worked with master drummer Kofi Missiso and the "Ghana Cultural Ballet" and assimilated African music. Once he was back in Europe, he became firmly established in the European reggae scene with The Dubby Conquerors and proved his versatility as a rhythmic jack-of-all-trades in jazz and African music projects, choirs, classical ensembles, improvisation, and solo works. These days, he lives in Ghana and presents his own compositions under the name Beda Massive Tribe.

NU GUINEA: Nuova Napoli LP (NG 001LP)
Almost two years after the success of the album The Tony Allen Experiments (COMET 072LP, 2016) and a few months after the release of the 7" Amore (2017), the duo Nu Guinea return to the scene with a new LP published by their newborn label NG Records. After touring the world looking for sounds suitable for their vibrations, Nu Guinea decided to go back to square one, Napoli, where Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina were born and raised. They watched their city from a distance reconstructing its energy from their studio in Berlin, calibrating the synths on the meridian of Vesuvius, the volcano that has always protected and threatened Napoli. Nuova Napoli is the result of a long musical research that has become a historical investigation on the sound that shaped Napoli during the '70s and '80s, starting from the contamination of genres (disco, jazz-funk, African rhythms) which ended up in Nu Guinea's DNA. In this album the synthesizers fill the spaces between the past and the future, tightening in a single body acoustic instruments, electronics and voices in Neapolitan dialect. It is the first time that the duo has worked with such a large group of musicians, some of whom are exponents of the contemporary Neapolitan scene. It is recommended that you listen to Nuova Napoli while walking in the alleys of Napoli's historic center, around wet clothes hanging and street vendors on tiny three-wheelers.

VA: Electro Acholi Kaboom From Northern Uganda 2LP (NNT 016LP)
Nyege Nyege Tapes spotlight the charming, young style of Electro Acholi from the Luo of Northern Uganda with a compilation of zippy rhythms and ear-worm hooks by 15 artists. Electro Acholi is the plugged-in version of traditional Acholi courtship songs from the region around the cities of Gulu and Lira, in an area spanning north Uganda and southern Sudan. This compilation surveys the sound's golden years circa 2003-2008, when a brutal civil war in north Uganda meant that traditional, larger wedding ensembles of up to 25 players were too costly, and younger producers with access to Fruity Loops and video editing facilities stepped in to fill a gap in the market. Using samples and synthesis, they created custom, sped-up versions of traditional songs and performed them at the ceremonies, leading the sound to spill out into local nightspots such as the Alobo Night Club and the Opit Travellers Inn. Scaling from a balmy 106bpm in the likes of Brother Q & City Boy's slinky bumper "Can Deg Ming", to pelting up-tempo styles embellished with local instrumentation, such as Pro Lagwee's "Rwot Moo", and the quick, all-electronic backing to the call-and-response vocals of "Kolo (Dog Mix)" by Opiyo Twongweno, the set affords a privileged insight to modern Acholi music usually omitted from the "world music" racks. Now for the first time, pioneers of the style such as Bosmic Otim and the breezy swang of "Bandera Pa Kaka", Lakoc Jojo with the cracking stepper "Apiyo Nyara", or the mellifluous Lady Grace Atim and her acidic banger "Adoko Gwok" take their place alongside Otim Alpha to present the best of Electro Acholi to keen-eared dancers everywhere. Effectively a continuation of NNT's ongoing archaeology of the Luo people's sonic culture, following the roots excavation of Langi Griot and thumb piano player, Ekuka, and the branches of Otim Alpha on his single string fiddle and drum machine, Electro Acholi Kaboom is an unmissable, even rare, survey of a critical, metamorphic phase shift between ancient, analog worlds, and digitized modernism. Also features Baby Davlin, Jahria Okwera, Pan Afrique, Ojegele, Tabu Buzy Body, Zing Zang, and Jeff Korondo. RIYL: Shangaan Electro, Soca, Singeli. ORCUTT, BILL: Odds Against Tomorrow CD (PAL 056CD)
"After two LPs and over half a decade spent toiling in the margins of the American Songbook, Bill Orcutt returns to original composition and the blues with his latest LP, Odds Against Tomorrow. Taking its title from Robert Wise's 1959 film noir, Odds Against Tomorrow retrofits familiar folk/blues forms to the unique sound of Orcutt's guitar and the result crackles with a freshness and authority that nostalgic retreads cannot deliver. Odds Against Tomorrow is more than an expansion of the territory charted by Bill Orcutt, his eponymous 2017 studio electric debut, although it's certainly that. With its nods to existing musics, half-step fluctuations, and near-songwriter-ly manipulations of tension/release, Odds Against Tomorrow is a rock record -- almost. Clearly and simply recorded through a clattering Fender Twin in Orcutt's living room and lovingly mixed by Bay Area neighbor and pedal-steel savant Chuck Johnson, no one would mistake it for any era's radio fodder, yet the precision of its technique and the swaying Child-ballad logic of its gentler improvisations comfortably seats it between John Mayall and Richard Thompson in your Ikea Kallax. Three songs ('Odds Against Tomorrow,' 'The Writhing Jar,' 'Already Old') are multi-tracked, an innovation that, for guitar buffs familiar with Orcutt's stripped-down vernacular, jumps out of the grooves like a Les Paul sound-on-sound excursion in 1948, or a Jandek blues rave-up in 1987. Specifically evoking John Lee Hooker's double-track experiments on 1952's 'Walking the Boogie,' the steady chord vamps of 'Odds Against Tomorrow' and 'Already Old' form a harmonic turf on which Orcutt solos with lyrical abandon . . . For the more 'contemporary-minded,' 'The Writhing Jar''s crashing overdubs recall the brassy six-string voicings of This Heat or Illitch. With the exception of the unreconstructed Elmore James-isms of 'Stray Dog' and the 'Layla'-finale-like haze of 'All Your Buried Corpses Begin To Speak,' the remaining non-overdubbed tracks dovetail snugly with Orcutt's previous solo output, reeling gently in a Mazzacane-oid mode or vibing up the standards ('Moon River'). On their own, these tracks would still be an important contribution to Orcutt's canon. As part of Odds Against Tomorrow's greater whole, they provide a through line, connecting the idiosyncrasies of Orcutt's past explorations with the scrambled tropes of his present work. Odds Against Tomorrow challenges contemporary solo guitar practice in a way that simultaneously nullifies hazy dreams of folk purity and establishes a new high-water mark for blues-rock reconstruction." --Tom Carter

VA: C'mon! C'mon!: The Roots of Scottish Rock and Pop 1963-1970 5CD BOX (PARTBOX 013CD)
With over 125 rare tracks, C'mon! C'mon! represents the first ever boxed anthology of Scottish beat music. Tracing the roots of the Scottish pop and progressive music scenes during its halcyon 1963-1969 period, C'mon! C'mon! highlights a lesser-known history that would richly contribute to the more widely acknowledged British 1960s music scene overall. While Lulu and Donovan may have made the successful journey to pop stardom, later iconic names such as the Average White Band, Stone The Crows, and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band would have their roots firmly placed in their native music scenes from Glasgow to Falkirk, Dundee, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and the Orkneys. Boasting analytical liner notes, original memorabilia, and extensive, archival period photos, C'mon! C'mon! offers an exciting journey through the history of Scottish rock and pop. Full-color 96-page, perfect bound booklet with detailed liner notes and rare images.

FUNKE, SASCHA: Genex 1 12" (PERMVAC 189-1EP)
Ever since his first exposure to euro-dance pop as a twelve year-old kid, Berlin native Sascha Funke followed the siren call of electronic music. By now he has carved out a spot at the forefront of leading-edge dance music through delivering the goods. From his early Bpitch and Kompakt years (Tracks like "Bravo" or "Mango" became some sort of all-time classics), The Saschienne project with his partner in crime Julienne Dessagne (aka Fantastic Twins), his synth wave and post-punk-inspired album Lotus Land (EF 017CD/LP, 2017), twisted piano house on Turbo, Krautrock spheres on Multi Culti to hypnotizing psychedelic on Hippie Dance. Genex 1 is his first full on EP for Permanent Vacation; here, Sascha proves once more that he definitely needs his own record shop section: three genre-bending tracks, full of quirky yet poppy melodies veering among cosmic trance, space techno and leftfield Italo to light up the Bengalos on any dance floor.

SIENKIEWICZ, JACEK: Lightin 12" (RECOG 043EP)
Most recently Jacek Sienkiewicz has been mainly preoccupied with experimental music -- his explorations of outer limits of sound resulted in three albums released already in 2019, with two more to follow by the end of the year. So, it was good and perhaps refreshing to hear his surprising return to the dancefloor with Lightin, an unexpected summer afterparty anthem. By popular demand, it's released on vinyl in its full, 11+ minute glory. Lightweight, gentle, and tuneful, propelled by a syncopated rhythm, it rolls like a steam engine taking you to your favorite holiday destination. Side B brings us another new track -- "Tracker" is definitely built for clubs and designed for peak time moments, be it in a cramped, dark basement or a big room at a festival. This EP is Jacek's first new club-oriented record on his Recognition label since Hideland (RECOG 040LP, 2016) -- and a teaser for an all-new album, due next year.

ONLY NOW: Captivity LP (SOUK 005LP)
Captivity is the new release by Kush Arora, aka Only Now, following a triptych of self-released output in 2019. Continuing the project's ever-evolving engagement with themes of time and existence, Captivity encompasses versatile synthesis, mutant kuduro, widescreen sound design, turbulent cold fronts of power ambient and melodic undertones of black metal. The product of a two-year period in which Arora was contending with transitional shifts in his personal life, Captivity is a culmination of what the project has explored both in a prolific run of recent material and as a whole, across several years of time-dilating, mind-altering music. Although shaped by adversity and corresponding sentiments of angst and insignificance, Captivity is pitched at total transcendence. Adopting a meticulous approach to production, a methodology which opens up almost every element to transformation and deconstruction, Arora generates forms which possess a sense of pointillist precision, as well as a keen psychedelic potency. Despite consistency with his earlier output as Only Now, Captivity is nevertheless an indication of Arora's ability to challenge internal and external assumptions. The introduction of new hardware -- namely, the Nord Drum 3P synthesizer, as well as the incorporation of far-flung atmospherics -- closing track "Clock Lust" features field recordings from a trip to Kyoto -- delivers fresh enterprise and experimentation, contributing to the expansion of a sound signature which remains as unpredictable and compelling as ever. With the eponymous opener, Arora combines fathomless underworlds and riotous breakbeats. On Mutants" a hyper-kinetic onslaught of percussion, low-end and stray cut-ups of noise break out, building to a panorama of thunderous industrial firmaments. "Perpetual Slaughter" maintains momentum with icy, ricocheting FX and concussive, tribal drums, then unexpectedly shifts into a poignant outro which brings to the fore the enduring influence of black metal on the project. "Bound 2" is cut with relentless sub-bass and rapid syncopation, resembling an abstracted form of juke music, something that could feasibly have been masterminded by Autechre. With the LP's finale, "Clock Lust," Arora presents a finale of transfixing 3D ritualism, the lone toll of a bell ringing out into a mesmeric emptiness. Together these form a complete statement from Arora, illustrating the fertile and open-ended territories the Only Now project has arrived at after promising outings on Infinite Machine and Discrepant imprint Sucata Tapes. With Captivity Arora delivers a substantial high point and a profound voyage into the world of Only Now. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker.

MAPSTATION: Present Unmetrics CD (TAL 014CD)
Since 2000, Mapstation has been the moniker for the solo work of TAL Label founder Stefan Schneider. Schneider has won international acclaim as a founding member of Kreidler and To Rococo Rot, as well as through unique collaboration works with artists such as Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia), Bill Wells, Katharina Grosse, Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia), Sofia Jernberg, or Jochen Irmler (Faust). There has not been a new Mapstation release since 2009's The Africa Chamber (SCAPE 059CD) which had former Fela Kuti member Nicholas Addo-Nettey on percussion. Present Unmetrics is not entirely a stand-alone creation either. There are guest appearances by Thomas Klein (Kreidler) on percussion, Michael Acher (The Notwist) on Sousaphone and an outstanding vocal contribution from Japanese singer Haco, all deeply woven into the digital topography of the music. Present Unmetrics offers a collection of radically subtle music. The guiding principle of the album was to construct direct and nuanced tracks which embody a sense of open-ended incompleteness and heterogenous dynamics. Out-of-sync bass arpeggios, infused with uneven rhythms, fractured synth stabs, and intimate melodies, frequently created here with a Schlumberg sine wave generator, are continuously engage with experimentation, both on sound and structure. Expertly pieced together and produced in timeless fashion, Present Unmetrics displays all the coherence and artistic authority of an album on a constant quest so vital to the music of Mapstation. An album that couldn't have been made by any other than Mapstation.

COMET GAIN: Fireraisers Forever! LP (TR 397LP)
LP version. Here comes the beat of the broken street... "Fireraisers" as in those with flames in veins -- had enough of the never ending spiral of stupidity and hate and greed and religious/political hypocrisy --the inexorable rise of the moron mind and those sleepwalking in their lazy hives letting THEM do this to US... a modern rite to burn away all this to the ground and see what nice flowers rise up from the ground... we imagine an army of disenchanted, beaten down kids becoming modern anarchist magicians drawing dumb sgylls of dada retribution ... "if we all spit together we can drown the bastards".

The last LP was a gentler, inner, melancholic hug at 2am and perhaps we would've continued to go down a sweeter road but the state of the world has meant Comet Gain were compelled to turn the fuzz up and make something more brutal and instant. In defiance to their last LP -- now its late-night sadness turns to the angry morning. First take beats ethics. Two weeks of late afternoon 45s listening parties with The Rationals/Nerves/Messthetics/Back From The Grave garage/Fading Yellow comps/The Jam/Dead Moon --whatever had the urge. Trying to figure out how Rufus Thomas would sound if he joined the Swell Maps... condensing it all mixing and absorbing then forgetting it all and propelling the psychic mix tape into an albums worth of angry pop drops and slow howls. Recorded in a living room in North London with James Hoare (The Proper Ornaments, Ultimate Painting) with the help of Joseph Harvey-Whyte (Hanging Stars) pedal steeliest. Then turned into the record it is by drummer/producer M.J. Taylor who also produced Comet Gain's LP Realistes -- the closest cousin to this one... songs about the evil greedy mirage of world religion, Victor Jara and those poets and teachers killed for believing in love and words, about the forgotten who are blamed for everything and can't rise up from their knees to fight back, about the high street Kali-Yuga, occult terrorists with low IQ but high ESP, about the Godfrey Brothers, about Lou Reed's mourning dog on a road trip trying to bury his masters mullet somewhere in the desert, about those stuck in the glory days of their past myopic of the present and all the other usual losers and romantics the band always bang on about -- with added melody and stomp... giving no real answers but pointing fingers and prodding you in the back... in defiance of just staying silent and letting the morons win. So Comet Gain is still alive longer than we should --still trying to be a collective and an idea emerging every now and then with the same grumpy erratic sounds -- this one's louder than the last one but sometimes maybe quieter. And it's filled with love and rage. And it's about 40 minutes long which is always a good thing.

ASTOR, PETE: Paradise LP (TR 436LP)
LP version. Tapete Records present a reissue of Pete Astor's Paradise, originally released in 1992 on Danceteria. With the onset of the 1990s and the conclusion of The Weather Prophets, Pete Astor was in the mood for some artistic regeneration. To this end, he recruited a new group of musicians and friends, forming The Holy Road. The band consisted of erstwhile Felt and Everything But The Girl guitarist Neil Scott, bassist Chris Clarke (soon to become a key member of both The Rockingbirds and Danny and the Champions of the World), and drummer Russell Lax (of The Oyster Band and Billy Childish's Pop Rivets). While much of the UK was -- in the words of Jarvis Cocker -- "standing in a field, sorted for Es and Whizz," Astor maintained his commitment to his version of an English Chanson tradition. As such, he was adopted by a new French audience, coalescing around the anglophile gospel of the influential magazine Les Inrockuptibles who lionized Astor's work -- whether it be "Why Does The Rain?", courtesy of his first Creation band, The Loft, or The Weather Prophets' demi-anthem "Almost Prayed", or his more recent solo work on "Submarine" and "Zoo". And so arrived Paradise, becoming for many the album in which Astor, along with The Holy Road, most perfectly expressed his indubitable facility as a singer and songwriter. All his enduring musical references -- from classic British guitar pop to New-York punk via the blues and even jazz -- seem to blend into a fully-formed vision, one which envisions a kind of mythic America whilst always cleaving to European, and specifically British, roots. Twenty-seven years later, with Tapete's re-release, Paradise is a vital addition to a body of work which sounds as good now as it did then.

MONOCHROME SET, THE: Fabula Mendax LP (TR 449LP)
LP version. At the end of the '70s, The Monochrome Set were part of the first wave of "post punk" bands. Right from the beginning, the band earned a solid reputation as purveyors of fine pop, gaining praise from '80s contemporaries such as Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. Importantly, in later years this praise has continued with artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy, and Graham Coxon, all citing the band as a key influence on their own work. The Monochrome Set sound has often been described as "timeless", and that alone explains why, over the years, the band has continued gaining admirers. Fabula Mendax is based on manuscripts written in the 15th Century by Armande de Pange, a companion of Jehanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc). Follow Armande as she flees her unhinged family, only to be caught up in the chaos of The Hundred Years' War. She encounters and trails the enigmatic Joan, later becoming a part of her expanding group of followers. As they travel west into the war zone of Northern France, they meet a motley medley of scheming noblewomen, bellicose knights, nefarious bishops, and assorted rotters, rogues, and renegades. This is The Monochrome Set at its most ornate, and, much like Joan of Arc's ensemble, features a myriad of fiddlers, pluckers, beaters, tinklers, and wailers, surrounding a central core of notorious crackpots. The hauntingly melodic pop harks back to the early TMS period of "Eine Symphonie Des Grauens" (1979), but is now complemented by a (periodically unemployed) vampire's orchestra, whose cha-cha-charnel chiming careens into carnal rhyming chanting, while saints and demon's trip lightly across the slick red fields of liberty. As with all TMS albums, Fabula Mendax is at once accessible and arcane, upbeat and dark, lush and spare, and with lyrics that as ever remain tantalizingly opaque.

WIGGS, JOSEPHINE: We Fall LP (SOS 001LP)
Repressed; LP version. Alt-rock icon Josephine Wiggs is best known as bassist in The Breeders, rising to superstardom in the '90s and continuing to draw crowds and critical acclaim in the wake of their 2018 album All Nerve. But over the years, Wiggs has released several of her own albums, all of which delightfully defy genre. Her new solo record, We Fall, is both a departure and a distillation of an enduring personal aesthetic: moody and spare but also melodic, at once contemporary and nostalgic. Some influences are clear: We Fall is reminiscent of the experimentalism of Brian Eno's Another Green World (1975) and recalls the delicate, languid minimalism of Harold Budd. The album's classical inflections, sharpened by a dialog with electronic elements, evoke Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is an album of juxtapositions: minimalist at moments, richly layered in others; ambient while also sharply focused; melancholy yet resolute. There's something both dreamy and scientific about We Fall. Wiggs, an enthusiastic amateur mycologist, has an impressive collection of mushrooms she's photographed in her travels. We Fall could be the soundtrack to what can't be captured in a single photo -- the growth and decay of miraculous creatures that a less astute and sensitive eye might overlook entirely. Composed, performed, and recorded by Wiggs, with drums and electronics by her longtime friend and collaborator Jon Mattock (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized), We Fall is a lyrical, bucolic album with an undercurrent of disquiet. Think of a wintertime walk in the woods as dusk falls too soon. True to the classic album form, the ten almost entirely instrumental tracks on We Fall form a compelling whole: a crystalline meditation on paths not taken and words unspoken, an elegy for moments lost and last embraces.

LICHTENSTEIN AND JONO PODMORE, SWANTJE: Hallraum Cassette (TTW 117CS)
Improvised site-specific performance accompanying and responding to the sights and sounds of Worringerplatz, Düsseldorf, Germany, August 10, 2018. Personnel: Swantje Lichtenstein - voice, electronics; Jono Podmore - electronics. Additional recording by Kai Winter. Mixed by Jono Podmore.

Jono Podmore writes: "After the release of our 7" single Miss Slipper/Lewes on Psychomat Records in 2017 it was time for another release in keeping with our spirit of adventure and interrogation of established forms. We'd played a few improvised shows which lead us to think of combining the anvil of the audience with the hammer of recording. A plan was hatched to create an event that would lead to an artifact -- both an open recording session and a recorded event: a site-specific incident and a time-specific document. A number of venues between our homes and workplaces in London, Köln and Düsseldorf were mooted. Suddenly Swantje found herself in possession of the keys to the Hallraum... August 10th, 2018 was a balmy night on Worringerplatz. The good, bad and the ugly of Düsseldorf were out in force; promenading their profusion of languages, habits, needs, and grudges. The architect of the platz built benches (Bänke in German) into the design, so the homeless that gather on the Bänke to put their tired feet up and have a drink, have become known as the 'Bankers'. Nestling under the trees on the northern corner of the platz is the Hallraum: a wee glasshouse that functions as a gallery, a venue and as a piece of public sculpture in its own right. We set up our gear, a PA system and an array of microphones amidst an installation in the Hallraum, opened up the doors and windows, then played for the peoples of Worringerplatz, gathering an audience as we went along. Setting the panes of glass rattling, accompanying the trams, serenading the bankers and those hungry for Pizza und Kultur, we played karaoke to the sounds of the platz. As we busied ourselves in the Hallraum, fellow traveler Kai Winter, armed with a digital recorder and synchronized to the master clock, prowled Worringerplatz and beyond to capture the environment mingling with our sound writing and wave shaping. Later, all the sources were brought together and mixed exactly as they happened in time and place to produce these pieces."

TURNER, AARON: Interminable Conniption Cassette (TTW 118CS)
Interminable Conniption finds avant metallurgist Aaron Turner ruminating on the aberrant possibilities of solo electric guitar. Herein, Turner focuses on psycho-emotional atmospherics built from the sonic detritus of a full-stack and a few effects pedals. The resultant tracks are minimally-layered spontaneous performances interweaving quivering drones, distended melodies, and saturated dissonance into an immersive architecture of burbling turbulence and uneasy quietude. Besides his solo works, Aaron Turner is renowned for his participation in the bands Sumac and Isis. His other projects include Old Man Gloom, Mamiffer, and House of Low Culture, as well as collaborations with other artists such as Tashi Dorji, Daniel Menche, Keiji Haino, and Circle. While the first volume of Tigersushi's new compilation series, Musique Ambiante Francaise, showcased a rather cosmic and synth heavy side of all things ambient, this Vol. 2 goes in many new directions, with more experiments towards electroacoustics and musique concrete, another side of ambient that has a long French lineage. The term musique concrete, a type of "acousmatic" music, was invented by pioneer Pierre Schaeffer in 1948 who influenced numerous other French composers such as Pierre Henry, Laurent Bayle, etc. Once again, Tigersushi asked artists across the electronic music spectrum, not necessarily familiar with ambient music, to create a track for the compilation: some are already famous for their avant-garde work like Felicia Atkinson, Le Comte, Smagghe & Cross. Others come from very different backgrounds and made their first beat-less track: Bambounou, Pierre Rousseau (ex Paradis), Destiino (aka Yuksek). The sound ranges from analog synth bliss (Le Comte, Pierre Rousseau, Destiino) to anxious electronics (Bambounou, Ashburn County), from emotional minimalism (Trypheme, Bun) to neoclassical electro acoustic experiments (Ojard et Jean Ray, Villeneuve & Morando, Jackson and His Computer Band). ELEH: Living Space CD (TO 114CD)
Following Slow Fade for Hard Sync (2009) and Location Momentum (2010), Living Space is Eleh's third physical release for Touch. Seven years in the making, this new release consolidates the artist's parallel narrative between a series of vinyl and CD releases for Important Records -- where the emphasis is on a minimalist aesthetic -- to a visual counterpoint that hints at the cinematic and painterly qualities of the music. Sound, as a healing force, is an idea as old as the medium itself. Inspired by the legacy and above all the spirit of John Coltrane, Living Space features five new compositions that seek to express the beauty of slow change, not only through the microtonal shifts in sound that Eleh navigates but moving with the atmospheric and shape-shifting conditions that the music creates as it interacts with the listening space, whether bedroom or concert hall, each one of them unique. If the ambition of Living Space is to reflect both personal and collective growth cycles, the experience of its audition has the effect of stopping time. Melodic and harmonic progressions are implied and not stated obviously, to enable listeners to apply their own emotions and feelings to the music. Using modular and analog synthesizers, piano, organ, bass, and symphonic chimes, Living Space stresses the promise of the CD's final track -- "Lighter Touch" -- forsaking the forceful hand for an approach that mirrors the slower and softer exposures of plant life and leaf formations, slow moving waters, not flash floods nor forest fires. In counterpoint to the music, the 60-minute CD is presented with a six-panel digi-file with Jon Wozencroft's water photography extending the meditational pull of these new compositions. For those for whom Eleh needs no introduction, see if you agree. Anyone who has yet to experience the artist's sonic alchemy, Living Space is the perfect starting point.

CURRIE & JOEL HOLMES, CODY: New Chapter 12" (TOYT 103EP)
More new members in the Toy Tonics family: Joel Holmes and Cody Currie joined the Berlin crew. They will release a couple of EPs. You might know Joel Holmes: American jazz pianist and keyboard player who has been member of Roy Hargrove's legendary Grammy-nominated band, but also is part of Carl Craig's synthesizer ensemble. Joel is living in Berlin now, where he is involved in the new vibrant neo-jazz scene. (Yes! Berlin used to be a Techno city, but it's becoming kind of a jazz town now!) In Berlin Joel throws monthly jam sessions (the Urban Base Jam) where the creme de la creme of Berlin ex-pad jazz musicians meet up. Americans, Europeans... Crazy things can happen here. Like when Erykah Badu played Berlin in 2019 and her complete band came to jam at Joel's session after their gig. Joel now takes the next step: he teamed up with Cody Currie: 24-year-old London born talent, who already made some waves in the house scene. Cody is known as a stylized producer, with a unique recognizable sound. Much of his craft was owned in studying a bachelors in music in London. His most known work by now might be a jazzy reinvention of "Devils Shoestring" with over half-a-million plays on SoundCloud and YouTube. With his new works Cody is coming away from sampling, working only with live instrumentation. Joel & Cody both live in Berlin now where they met Toy Tonics head honcho Mathias "Kapote" Modica. And when they met there was a vibe. All three have their roots in jazz music share similar ideas about how dance music should evolve and could sound in 2020. (In fact Kapote Modica studied jazz piano, too and has been playing in bands before getting into electronic music). Joel & Cody are working in a great Berlin basement studio, at Cody's home. Working on a new way of combining jazz-funk with real musicianship, MPC grooves and live instruments to get a new, fresh approach on dance music.

Transversales Disques announce the release of Nuits Blanches au Studio 116, unreleased rarities from Ariel Kalma's personal archives recorded in the legendary GRM's Studio 116 during the '70s. Born and raised in Paris, Ariel Kalma started playing the recorder and saxophone as a youth. After successive studies of computer science, music, and art in Paris he performed in various concerts from middle-age music to free jazz duo. Ariel performed and recorded with several bands (J. Higelin, R. Pinhas, NYL, G. Scornic, Baden Powell...) After learning circular breathing on soprano sax, Ariel could include those endless notes into his own long-delay-effect system, dual Revox set-up and two tape machines "chained" together to form a long delay system. In France during the mid-1970s, Kalma was staffed as a recording assistant at legendary Groupe de Recherches Musicales (INA GRM) studios, where Ariel recorded some of his compositions in the Studio 116; the same music "concrete" laboratory that spawned masterpieces by members Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani, and others.

Recording by Daniel Bengtsson at Studio Rymden Stockholm in January 2018. Mixed by Andreas Werliin. Mastering by Martin Siewert.

Free Jazz Blog on Threnody, At The Gates: "The album shows the trio in an explosive, highly rhythmic mode. The tight, massive rhythm section of Berthling and Noble keeps spiraling around Küchen imaginative attacks, never letting the heated tension to subside even for a second. The second and longest piece, is a brilliant highly intuitive improvisation, shifting fast between dynamics, from loose, free-associative ones, stressing the distinct vocabularies of all three musicians, to faster, muscular ones. All with deep intensity and great focus on the details. Surprisingly, this intensity still lets Küchen articulate a strong, clear theme even within the segments where he investigates his horn's timbral distortion."

PERRY, LEE 'SCRATCH': The Black Album 2LP (RLSUPSETT 004LP)
2019 repress; double LP version. At 83 years of age, Lee Scratch Perry presents to the world his next full-length solo album, The Black Album, with dub versions, continuing his inimitable roots reggae legacy. Lee's brief for the album, was to blend the vintage and the obscure, during the sessions Lee referred to the sound and "black" and wanted space, light and darkness in the songs and their respective dub versions. The result sees Lee having mixed up an analog concoction of ultra-rare effects, sonic wizardry and deep heavy roots rhythms. Over 2017 and 2018, Lee Scratch Perry reunited with producer and mixer Daniel Boyle to start work on their second solo album project for Lee. Picking up where their last efforts Back On The Controls (2014) left off. Lee wanted to continue the raw analog sound they had cultivated together over multiple past releases, and take it to the next level with new effects devices to create another sonic signature. They entered the studio in 2017, to begin to put together ideas for the tracks, which were then taken to RAK studios in London with their ever-changing Rolling Lion All Stars session band; to lay down the rhythm versions. Using strictly vintage analog equipment, they employed Neuman valve and RCA Ribbon microphones, and RAK's early model vintage API desk to record, the "sound" for the album was sculpted in these sessions. Vintage, but punchy, which was then blended with Lee's choice of super rare and custom analogue effects. Ursa Major Space Station and Stargate delays and reverbs, old choruses, plate and spring reverbs, and tape delays were used to create a tight vintage feel but retaining the rawness of the "Low Fi" roots sound Lee was aiming for. With the music coming together, the vocal sessions were held in Abbey Road Studio 3, again using vintage RCA ribbon mics, overdriving their EMI TG console and Fairchild compressors to create a pleasantly distorted lo-fi vocal sound. Lee and Daniel then returned to Daniels Rolling Lion Studio, to mix and dub the album, live, on the mixing console.

LES LAMES DU VENT (AIDA DIOP AND JOEL MUSY): Dejeuner sur l'herbe CD (VDE 1562CD)
Les Lames du Vent is a marimba-saxophone duet created in 2013 by Aïda Diop and Joël Musy, one trained in classical percussion, and the other a jazz musician. Dejeuner sur l'herbe is a repertoire on the border of genres, between covers, arrangements and original compositions; Les Lames du Vent seeks the marriage of sounds, the balance of colors, the accuracy of the subject, the connivance and the expression. Both musicians studied at classical and jazz schools of music, and play world-jazz original music with a beautiful sound (marimba and saxophones). Includes covers of Kai Stengaard's "Rain Forest" and Eden Ahbez's "Nature Boy".

2019 repress; Vinyl Lovers present a reissue of Os Mutantes' A Divina Comedia Ou Ando Meio Desligado, originally released in 1970. This was the third album from Os Mutantes, the geniuses of wacked out Brazilian psychedelic rock. They may have been trying to pay homage to their better known icons back in the States, but in doing so they created something that went beyond all that until, 30 years later, they became the ones that everyone was trying to imitate. This album, further testimony to their limitless creativity and considered by many to be their best, was recorded during the height of the Brazilian military regimes crack down on artists, and fellow members of the Tropicalia movement, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil had already been sent into exile in the UK. 180 gram vinyl.

TAKAHASHI, YUKIHIRO: Saravah! CD (WWSCD 026CD)
Wewantsounds present a reissue of Yukihiro Takahashi's debut solo album Saravah!, originally released in 1978. One of the key Japanese albums of the '70s, it was released at a key time when, following his tenure with Sadistic Mika Band, Takahashi had just joined the nascent line up of Yellow Magic Orchestra. A sophisticated mix of disco funk, synth pop, ambient, French exotica, and bossa nova, the album has the stylish feel of a night out clubbing in Paris circa 1978. It's the missing link between the city pop scene of the late '70s and the synth sound of YMO which was about to revolutionize the world. The month before recording the YMO debut album that would help alter the course of music, Yukihiro Takahashi entered the studio with his fellow band-members Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono to record Saravah! together with the cream of the Japanese scene. He drew his inspiration from globe-trotting French musician Pierre Barouh who had introduced Bossa Nova in France in 1966 with "Samba Saravah" (featured in soundtrack the Oscar winner A Man And A Woman which he co-wrote) and subsequently launched Saravah Records. Saravah! starts off with a couple of French and Italian exotica classics ("Volare" and "C'est Si Bon") with delicious touches of synth while "Saravah!" is a nod to Pierre Barouh, a languid bossa nova with beautiful soulful strings arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto. The album gets hotter with "La Rosa", a superb mid-tempo ambient funk featuring Shigeru Suzuki's fluid guitar. Next is an amazing exotica-synth version of the standard "Mood Indigo", announcing the midi revolution that was to come before things get funkier shortly after with Ryuichi Sakamoto's superb up-tempo disco instrumental "Elastic Dummy" featuring soulful strings and horns with solos by Sakamoto and guitarist Tsunehide Matsuki. The album then moves on to the ambient synth pop of "Sunset" before switching back to disco funk with "Back Street Midnight Queen" which, like "Elastic Dummy", has become a dancefloor cult classic. Saravah! ends on a perfect note with the beautiful "Present" a perfectly crafted pop song which Takahashi wanted to do in a city pop mode, featuring a superb melody and high-class arrangements.. Newly remastered by renowned engineer Mitsuo Koike. Features original artwork with photos by Masayoshi Sukita (David Bowie's Heroes (1977)); includes four-page insert and a new Introduction by Benjamin Barouh (of Saravah Records).

RAHBANI, ZIAD: Abu Ali LP (WWSLP 027LP)
Following the success of the special Record Store Day Abu Ali edition (WWSLP 021LP), Wewantsounds are reissuing a standard version of Ziad Rahbani's mythical disco 12" which was originally issued in Lebanon in 1978. This reissue on black vinyl features the original artwork, with remastered audio. Wewantsounds is to announce the first-ever official vinyl reissue of Ziad Rahbani's mythical Lebanese Disco 12" Abu Ali, originally issued in Lebanon in 1978 on his label Zida Records. A highly collectible album, it will get reissued by Wewantsounds with its original artwork, remastered by Colorsound Studio in Paris. Ziad Rahbani is a cultural icon in Lebanon. The musician, pianist, and producer is also a renowned playwright and a political activist, one of the most important exponent of the Lebanese left-wing counterculture to emerge from the '70s. Coming out of an illustrious artistic dynasty (his father is the famous composer and musician Assi Rahbani, member of group The Rahbani Brothers and his mother is the legendary Middle East Diva, Fairuz), Ziad Rahbani started his music career during his late teens, composing music for his mother. Rahbani quickly spread his wings further. He started producing his own music co-founding the label Zida in 1978 at age 22 in the process and started releasing records under his own name. Among these was Abu Ali recorded in Greece at the EMI Studios in Athens with a full orchestra -- there he also recorded his mother's 1979 album Wahdon (WWSLP 022LP) -- and released it as a limited run EP for the Lebanese market. Legend has it that the album was only pressed at 500 unit hence its rarity. The result is a fabulous New York-meets-Beirut disco ecstasy, developing over two 13-minute tracks and one of the most collectible albums on the international dance and disco scene.

ARAB STRAP: The Week Never Starts Round Here LP (IF 204LP)
"The year 1996 saw the release of Arab Strap's first single, 'The First Big Weekend,' and debut album The Week Never Starts Round Here. Into an underground rock milieu preoccupied at the time with slo-core, math rock, and all things Pet Sounds, the duo of Malcolm Middleton and Aidan Moffat couldn't have sounded more alien. In many ways, The Week Never Starts Round Here bears all the marks of a debut: it's raw, unguarded, and crammed with ideas. It also firmly establishes the particular set-up that would define Arab Strap's sound over the course of eleven years, with Middleton handling the music while Moffat provides the vocals and lyrics. Even this division of labor -- more common to rap music than to the shoegazers and increasingly ubiquitous 'collectives' of indie rock -- seemed to defy expectations. The sound of Arab Strap is a distinct brand of existential miserablism. Middleton's cleverly arranged foundation of nocturnal guitars and rudimentary drum machines provides a canvas for Moffat to relay, in a thick Scottish dialect, his many sloshed, candid confessions. Long before artists like Mike Skinner chronicled the picaresque days of lads getting pissed and getting laid, Arab Strap's vivid tales of lovers, lager and shame were being broadcast on college stations everywhere. The Week Never Starts Round Here is an album full of drugged-up kisses and dried up egos; it chronicles the conquests and knockbacks of weekends that last forever, and it does so unapologetically, poetically, and profanely. Indie rock would never be the same."

Full-color illustrated 220-page hardcover book with a plethora of photos, many shown here for the first time, and track-by-track commentary. In depth analysis by Grammy-nominated Bakersfield Sound historian Scott B. Bomar. Foreword by Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett. Buck Owens and Merle Haggard emerged from the dim lights, thick smoke and loud, loud music of Bakersfield, California's thriving honky-tonk scene of the 1950s and '60s and changed country music forever. But what is the 'Bakersfield Sound?' While twanging Telecasters and crying steel guitars come to mind, the music that emanated from Central California in that era reflected a variety of influences that was expressed in myriad ways. 'We represent the end results of all the years of country music in this town,' Haggard once remarked about the California city that served as home base for the two Country Music Hall of Fame inductees. But how did the musical world from which Buck and Merle emerged come to be? How were the twin pillars of the Bakersfield Sound shaped by the city's larger musical community? Who were their influences, and what were the musical markers along their paths to success? In what ways did their achievements reshape the local scene from which they emerged?"

PINCH: Border Control EP 12" (BH 059EP)
"Berceuse Heroique is very proud to announce that one of our biggest heroes is going to be our next release for this year. Pinch, one of the seminal members of the Bristol scene, is kickstarting a trilogy of 12"s that we call 'an ode to sound system culture', trying to invoke the long lost spirits of pure, heavyweight, hardcore hedonism that stems from a lot of sub genres of British dance music culture. 'Border Control' fuses the industrial aesthetics of Birmingham techno and the jungle techno pressure of the early 90's and in the end it sounds like a fight anthem against Brexit. 'Fortune Teller' will test any soundsystem with that Dillinja-esque bassline and Loose Cables could easily be the younger brother of one of Pinch's most underrated tunes, 'The Attack Of The Killer Robot Spiders'. Pinch runs the voodoo down one more time and he sounds pissed off and more fresh than ever."

His music recordings have been slumbering in oblivion in Namibian radio archives. His songs were consciously censored and damaged as its messages did not please the South African apartheid regime. The album contains field and studio recordings that were made in 1981 by SWABC. To this day, these recordings have never been commercially released. In his liner notes, Thorsten Schütte describes his ultimately successful search for Ben Molatzi and further meetings with the artist, who talks in detail about his life, his songs and the life circumstances in his country."

Repressed, green vinyl. "1968 debut album from the king of the psychedelic bayou -- the hypnotic, mystical and powerful sound of the swamp coming to life. As he became Dr. John (real name Mac Rebennack), it was his LA session work with musicians like Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat, and Zappa that allowed him to start conjuring up his visions of guitar psych-pop to walk alongside his authentic New Orleans upbringing. While Gris Gris contains moments that make it a type stamped symbol of its era, it might have well been made in outer space. Recorded in its own psychic and stylistic vacuum, the album borrows as heavily from the New Orleans' musical culture in which he grew up as it does the looming continuous pulse of war, heavy drugs, and the end of the free love/hippie movement. The album was taken under the wing of a small percentage of the 'underground' upon its release in 1968 and did not find a true following for years. FIREBREATHER: Under A Blood Moon 2LP (EZRDR 109LP)
Double LP version. "Fire is what happens when a carbon-based object is consumed by oxygen. That chemical reaction is fitting to the sound of Firebreather: the riffs are suffocating, the rhythms fast-moving and all-consuming. It's so blindingly and deafeningly monolithic, don't be surprised to be gasping for air while listening. The Gothenburg, Sweden trio has a streamlined focus on driving, symphonic riffs in the vein of High On Fire, Inter Arma and their tour and label-mates Monolord. The guitar and bass tones are, quite simply, entrancing. Like watching flames engulf a forest, the billowing guitar tones are simultaneously beautiful and destructive, while the rhythms sway and lunge with vicious precision. 'It's riff-based, heavy as fuck, but with a groove to it,' explains vocalist/guitarist Mattias Nööjd, formerly of popular Swedish doom merchants Galvano. 'We had gotten off a tour with Monolord in February of 2018 and by that time we had the song 'Firebreather' done," but soon thereafter new drummer Axel Wittbeck joined the fold. 'Once Axel had joined, it was like the flood gates opened,' says bassist Kyle Pitcher. 'The rest of the album just came together.' LOW & SPRING HEEL JACK: Bombscare EP 12" (TRD 001EP)
"Bombscare is an extraordinarily lush, poignant collaboration between quiet rockers Low and experimental electronic duo Spring Heel Jack. Spring Heel Jack provides the musical collage as a background for the harmonies and solo vocals of Low's Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk. Their production creates an icy cathedral of sound that... when it was released nearly 20 years ago, sounded unlike anything else in either band's discography. 'Bombscare' bleeds mood, space, and texture as sounds ring out and echo into the distance. 'Hand So Small' works like a literate lullaby as musical flourishes appear from thin air, a piano haunts the outskirts of the song. 'So Easy (So Far)' is perhaps the most traditional Low song, but Spring Heel Jack manages to make the band sound like they're singing modern day Brothers Grimm tales. 'Way Behind' is a stunning closer. It's a truly exhilarating song that sounds like it was recorded in heaven, as Parker and Sparhawk again take turns singing angelically over a jazzy electronic stew full of subtle found-sounds. Bombscare hints at the musical turn Spring Heel Jack would take on Masses and presents Low at the absolute peak of their powers. It's too bad the collaborators didn't compile an entire album's worth of material, as these 16 minutes seem magically fleeting. Bombscare couldn't be a more superb collaboration between these innovative artists." --All Music
