EASYBEATS, THE: At The BBC 1966-1968 LP (RANDB 074LP)

In addition to two sparkling versions of "Friday", this selection, recorded specially for the BBC by 'the Australian Beatles', includes marvellous pop-psyche tracks "Falling Off The Edge Of The World" and "Heaven And Hell" as well as some strong cover versions of songs by Ike & Tina Turner, Ernie K. Doe and Chuck Jackson. Full credits and sleeve notes included.

ALGA MARGHEN (ITALY):

ASHLEY, ROBERT: The Wolfman CD (NMN 048CD)
2021 restock. Alga Marghen presents a 2015 remastered CD edition of its 2003 CD The Wolfman, a collection of pieces that introduce the listener to the most extreme experimental side of American composer Robert Ashley. Presented in digipak with 12-page booklet including liner notes written by the composer and the complete score of "The Wolfman," first issued in Source magazine. The program starts with "The Fox" (1957), Ashley's first electronic work, which displays his nascent electronic music theater style. Dark atmospheres and primitive tape collage techniques recorded at home, mixing the electronic tape and the voice in a single live pass. "The Wolfman" was composed in early 1964 and first performed at Charlotte Moorman's 1964 second Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York. The piece immediately won a considerable reputation as a threat to the listener's health. For the occasion, instigated by Morton Feldman, Ashley composed a piece of tape music, "The Wolfman Tape," to be played along with the vocal performance of "The Wolfman." The tape composition, played out of the same loudspeakers as the voice and the feedback (the main sound source for this composition), filled in the ongoing performance sound and transformed the performance into an elaborate version of drone under the influence of electronics. For the performance of "The Wolfman" recorded here, produced at the University of California, Davis, Ashley used a 1960 tape composition titled "The 4th of July." That composition changes gradually from a parabolic-microphone documentation of a backyard party into a layering of tape loops and tape-head feedback. "The Wolfman Tape" (1964) is, as described above, a tape composition made for a short performance of "The Wolfman." It uses tape-speed manipulation and mixes of many layers of found sounds, both from AM radio and from recordings made using different kinds of microphones. "The Bottleman" was composed in 1960 as music for an experimental film by George Manupelli. The 40-minute version presented here involves contact microphones on a surface that holds a loudspeaker some six feet away. The loudspeaker is broadcasting open-circuit hum (at the American standard of approximately 60 hertz). That pitch is raised slightly through tape manipulation and the result is mixed with vocal sounds and other found sounds played back at various tape speeds.

NEUHAUS, MAX: The New York School: Nine Realizations of Cage, Feldman, Brown CD (NMN 052CD)
2021 restock. Previously-unreleased recordings, made 1964-1968. Different realizations than those featured on the Columbia LP Electronics and Percussion -- Five Realizations from '68. The term "New York School" refers to a circle of composers in the 1950s who orbited around John Cage: Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, Christian Wolff and David Tudor, above all. Their music paralleled the music and events of the Fluxus group, and drew its name from the New York School of mostly Abstract Expressionist painters who had got their start in the '40s: Motherwell, Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, and Kline. What brought these artists together was a faith in the liberation of the unconscious and an excitement drawn from the street energies of Manhattan. This compact disc offers multiple realizations by the solo percussionist Max Neuhaus of scores by three key members of the New York School: Earle Brown (three realizations of "Four Systems - For Four Amplified Cymbals," recorded between 1964 and 1968), Morton Feldman (three realizations of "King of Denmark," recorded between 1965 and 1968) and John Cage (one realization '64 and two realizations '65 of "27'10.554""). All three composers conformed to the ethos of the '60s, not to the blend of hippie mysticism and pop commercialism that defined that decade towards its end, but to a broader notion of personal liberation. In this context Max Neuhaus was allowed to express himself, to revel in timbral color (including the use of electronics, as in the amplification of the cymbals in the Brown performances, or in the use of a FM tuner, of a self-built electronic mini-instrument or of a tape with concrète sounds in the Cage performances) and in giddy dialogues between notated compositional intention and performed expression. Each of the realizations on this disc is a valid response to the scores, yet each is different, almost a new piece of music. This edition includes a 16-page booklet with original photos and concert programs, Max Neuhaus' own comments on the original scores, an editorial note by John Rockwell, and reviews by Malcolm Goldstein and Theodore Strongin.

CUBE: Drug of Choice LP (ALT 063LP)
Since 2010, Adam Keith's solo project Cube has been supplying a steady run of records and cassettes that capture songwriter-ly fixations and frustrations in a dexterous style of wounded electronics. Though Cube has been the centerpiece of his activity for some years, he's all the while remained active in collaborations, playing in bands such as SPF and Mansion to name just a few. Rounding off a decade of dialogues and agitations, Alter now presents Keith's third LP under the moniker of Cube, Drug of Choice. Based in New York, though managing a functional transience that takes in California too, Keith's latest iteration as Cube launches a panoramic set of sonic touchstones into a gristly and hypnotic orbit. Seismic drum machine parts partition an album that layers industrial-tipped takes on digi-dub with roaming guitar lines, piano vignettes, and breakbeat theatrics. For all the abrasiveness and rhythmic allusions that Keith employs, his use of voices alongside lush manipulations of errant samples and atmospheres tempers the commotion, delivering something that feels as much focused on artful constructions of private experiences as it does the cathartic qualities of noise.

BASHO-JUNGHANS, STEFFEN: IS LP (AOHRAR 001LP)
IS offers a world of micro-trance subtleties as well as epic landscape raga journeys all brought to you on both six and twelve steel-string guitars. With multiple releases all around the globe Steffen Basho-Junghans offers a very unique approach to the instrument. Not simply trying to be just another John Fahey and while taking clear influence from Robbie Basho, treads his own path from experimental simplistic minimal space to unexplainable complex finger picking (but never for the sake of it) as Basho said "soul first -- technique later". Basho-Junghans has been forging unprecedented ground within the solo guitar world over the last few decades where his output has covered everything from John Fahey style finger-picking, epic pieces influenced by Indian ragas to minimalist micro-trance adventures capable of taking your consciousness beyond the limitations of time. IS comfortably straddles Steffen's two mainstays: transcendental landscape ragas and experimental excursions that take the steel-string guitar to places that it has never been before. For example the finishing track on the album "...and like Wind we go", is a scratchy textural piece, that while devoid of any obvious melody has a striking atmosphere that will get the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. 200 gram super deluxe heavy weight vinyl; includes digital download.

SCANNER: Fibolae CD (BETTE 013CD)
Over the last twenty-five years, Robin Rimbaud -- Scanner has traversed the experimental terrain between sound, space and image, connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres -- a partial list would include sound design, film scores, computer music, avant-garde, contemporary composition, large-scale multimedia performances, product design, architecture, fashion design, rock music and jazz. Fibolae offers up a world that splinters between melancholia and penetrating energy. Inhale opens the album in an intimate manner, introduced with answer phone messages from those that have slipped away in recent years, from John Balance of Coil, DJ Tom De Werdt of Lowlands Distribution, John Everall of Sentrax Records, his mother, his brother, his grandmother and more, before exploding into a blinding percussive attack with twin drummers battling against a hovering melodic tension. Combining digital technologies, software and live instrumentation Fibolae is both a rhetoric of mourning and a celebration of music to empower. Warm, organic, sensual, passionate and frequently angry, it's an album that radiates with possibilities. Originally released on limited vinyl in 2017, it has been repressed in 2021. CD version includes extra track.

"Fibolae is deeply personal, where a melancholy mood underscores moments. This introspective album roams depths of emotion through a refined range of textures." --The Wire.

"Wonderfully strange and wholly captivating. Both colossal and imperious, tender and regretful. A consummate and compelling achievement." --Uncut

APPLEBLIM/DEADBEAT/SHACKLETON: Dub Conference Vol. 1 2LP (BLKRTZ 037LP)
Repressed. Great collaboration by Appleblim, Deadbeat and Shackleton. For anyone with a penchant for dub-wise low-end sonics and bleeding edge beat science over the last two decades seeing any one of these names on their own on a record would make it something well worth having a listen to. Having all three together on the same record however very easily launches it into the realm of "buy on sight". Comprised of four side-long tracks previously only available via the BLKRTZ Bandcamp page, Dub Conference Vol 1 sees these three masters of bass weight meditations exploring some of the most low-slung and psychedelic corners of their respective catalogues. Vinyl-only and strictly limited edition, this is a meeting of the minds not to me missed.

ANDRE, DOMINIQUE: Evasion CD (BORNBAD 140CD)
Dominique André is in his studio-apartment, a converted maid's room on Avenue Junot in Paris. In front of his Revox tape recorder, which can record two tracks separately, is a motley collection of instruments: a children's organ, a cooking pot, a guitar, a frying pan and various other everyday objects to be rubbed, banged together and gently beaten. On either side of the recorder, an upright piano, a stack of film sound effects records and a vinyl turntable sit waiting . . . In a glorious career as a production designer, came collaborations, sometimes friendships, with Claude Sautet, Pierre Granier-Deferre, Samuel Fuller, Georges Lautner, Andrzej Zulawski, Gérard Oury, Philippe de Brocca or Francis Veber. Dominique is the one who finds solutions, the one who makes everything look easy, the one who adapts to the craziest requests, the most demanding constraints . . . Dominique André received a commission from France Musique, created a film soundtrack and published a single vinyl record (reissued here) that went unnoticed having been released as "library music". Despite all this, his daily passion remains confidential, personal, even intimate, out of modesty, but above all out of indulgence, like when, hiding by yourself at the back of the cupboard, you stick your finger into the jar of jam and know that sharing goes on elsewhere. On either side of the Revox potentiometer rotation curve, the tape no longer knowing which timeline to turn to, his family listens, admiring and incredulous at so many self-taught adventures, such amateur brilliance. And his other grandmother, a virtuoso pianist who accompanied the first black jazz orchestras in France, as well as his son, first violin in the Paris Orchestra, both marvel, uncomprehending. In doing so, they offer a possible definition of true experimental beauty, which is somewhat misunderstood, and timeless. Finally, a last door opens, and in the next room, for a long time now, the experiments continue, always amateur, always enlightened. And the forms, the colors, developed in parallel in Dominique André's painting, cannot be described in the present narrative, which has to be brief, because only then will its form be relevant. LP version comes in printed under sleeve with gold pantone; includes download code.

MALLIA, SAUVEUR: Space Oddities: Sauveur Mallia 1979-1984 CD (BORNBAD 143CD)
In the ever-expanding universe of '70s and '80s French library music, Sauveur Mallia holds a special place; his career, multifaceted work and the uniqueness of his talent have made him an exemplary figure in the unsung world of library musicians. In those years a few of them, often for economic reasons, would set off on a space conquest, taking along just a few synthesizers. Their ambition well surpassed the modesty of their means; it was in turn the condition to their experimentations with sound which were to create a new sonic space: that of a nation tumbling into modernity. From French soil to the farthest reaches of the cosmos, there were just a few steps to take. It's with the label Tele Music, boarding the spaceship Arpadys, along with the Voyage crew, that Sauveur Mallia took the big leap. CD version includes 16-page liner notes in French and English.

You had also formed Arpadys with the members of Voyage?: Arpadys was me with the same team. I composed, arranged and recorded Arpadys with the same producer as for Voyage, Roger Tokarz. In that period I was listening to German bands a lot, like Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. I was very much into space music and I started working at home with my synths. The approach was completely different than to what I was used to as a professional bass player.

Which synthesizers were you using?: Old mono stuff, not even polyphonics. Three Korgs and some Moogs. I didn't use drum machines yet, but played with the drummer of Voyage. I recorded drum and guitar parts in the studio then went to England for the mixing. But most of the album was recorded at mine.

When did you start making library music?: I always worked with Roger Tokarz, who produced Voyage and Arpadys. With my friends who were members of Voyage we also made library records for his label Tele Music with different themes we proposed based on sports, the news, etc. I worked in my studio. Originally Arpadys was a library record Roger wanted to commercially release, Industrial Rock. Not much came out of it at the time, yet its become really sought-after in recent years.

Was library music a way to experiment freely?: Yes, I did what I wanted, without any restriction. Then people used it or they didn't. On each record, there were long versions of each track and we made 60, 30 and 15 second edits -- it gave medias the choice. The constraints came with custom sound-design for the radio, with jingles and France Info's credits I made at home solo with my machines for 17 years, then for RTL, Europe1, and for quite a few TV shows.

BRYAN'S MAGIC TEARS: Vacuum Sealed CD (BORNBAD 146CD)
That year, the night lasted five months in a row. Every day, when Benjamin Dupont woke up, the sun had been below the horizon for hours. Between 10pm and 4am, locked up secretly in Studio S**** with Marc Portheau, they piled up guitars, turned over amps, chopped over riffs, simplified arrangements and arbitrated. In the early morning, Lauriane Petit sees Benjamin coming back as she leaves to work. Without a word, he lies down. The sun pulls on his eyelids while, in his head, the journey continues: the pieces of music he recorded all night long slip into his dreams. There was no need for drugs to record Vacuum Sealed. The intensity of the ten songs that compose the album was enough to make the rest of the world disappear. The music is so massive, its presence so thick, that after a month of work, Benjamin and Marc couldn't even talk to each other. One of the cornerstones of their generation, made by musicians who also have -- or had -- a foot in the Villejuif Underground, Pleasure Principle, Bisous de Saddam or Dame Blanche... Like all great albums, it opens with a screaming introduction, "Greeting From The Space Boys". The band goes from one breathtaking track to another ("Excuses" sung by Lauriane like a Kim Deal composition, "Sad Toys" or the paroxysm of dancing melancholia, "Pictures Of You" or the best guitar riff ever played with a vibrato) before hanging on a thread. At this point of the record, one could believe that Bryan's Magic Tears is the gifted son of The Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Primal Scream. In 1991, this side of the album would have been recorded by a British band and released by Creation. After showing off the muscles on one album side, Benjamin Dupont digs a little deeper into his own veins and transfigures his band's music. They've been mistaken for drugged-out wankers, a band that makes big noise because they have three guitars on stage, slackers singing nonsense in false English. The B-side of Vacuum Sealed features three autobiographical pop songs with absolutely impeccable lyrics and melodies. In "Tuesday", "Isolation" and "Always", despite the drum machines and the false air of lightness, it's the Smiths' fan who speaks. One last display of overpowering production later -- "Superlava" -- and there it is: you thought Bryan's Magic Tears were taking drugs to make music to take drugs to. In fact, they do the opposite. They compose a repertoire that will outlive them, songs you can already imagine in the mouths and on the fingers of the future generations that will rediscover this marvelous album. One of the guitar classics of the early '20s. LP version includes download code.

SATAN, ARTHUR: So Far So Good CD (BORNBAD 148CD)
By Martial, Total Heaven Records Shop (Bordeaux): "I've been waiting for this a while now. Arthur Satan is releasing a solo album on Born Bad; and that's wonderful news. . . The key to this record is in a chest thrown down a well. Rewind back to spring 2010 and remember "Four Naked Sons", with those divine '60s folk songs recorded by Arthur. They already came across as the negatives to his multiple bands -- now they clearly sound like early demos. That plus all the experience and you get today's album. There's this old joke of the guy tumbling down the stairs thinking to himself, at each floor landing: 'So Far So Good'. Less electricity, less noise, more tenderness: yes, the beast can do it. Softness and light, that's what it's about. Who would have thought? Then there's also some beautiful piano... Thanks to his buddy Dorian? Nope. True to himself, Arthur does it all alone. The hefty servings of Mellotron are his, too. And what about the wonderful guitars? Same! And the refined arrangements? The heavenly vocal harmonies? Still him. 'The Nap' is tea time: Arthur's the host, John Fahey the guest. 'The Boy In The Frame' is the famous unreleased ballad of the album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Well, well... 'Summer' starts off like a lullaby on the metallophone and evolves into something of a Donovan song, minus the unexpected crankshaft solo. 'Love Bleeds From You Neck' is somewhere between acid folk song and medieval lament. 'It's All The Same' is another surprise, with its modern mix and particularly innovative arrangements. 'Time Is Mine' might be the track most evocative of J.C. Satàn... Though actually all the tracks on So Far So Good hover between tradition and modernity, obscure sunshine pop, good old classics and weird experiments. Before the album's outlandish finale, with Ween's cosmic overture to 'Boredom is Quiet', 'She's Long Gone' will have had time to evoke Brian Wilson's Beach Boys roaming through the English countryside looking for the perfect cottage . . . 'She's Hotter Than The Sun' owes just as much to T. Rex than to the ubiquitous Beatles. SATAN, ARTHUR: So Far So Good LP (BORNBAD 148LP)
LP version. Includes download code. TERRINE: Les Problemes Urbains LP (BRD 037LP)
"I am sitting in a room crying over an episode of Les Shadoks. A machine springs out of the TV and wipes the tears away to the sound of Sweet Exorcist's 'Test Four'. All my friends hate Autechre and I am laughing in a room." --Guy Mercier

"The unfamiliar life with other children is wonderful, it almost takes out of your head, the silence of automatic checkouts in grocery stores."

"With the punishment of their magical talent, pickles may well make an old man's voice as tender as the city sludge."

Music critic Androïd Aquila ran in Amiens for seven years. What experience has he had in this country? Who accompanied him to avoid as much as possible the fear of the canals, the terror of the hills? These children had wits to hear neglect and ears to understand inaction. A large number of mouths for drinking and singing. "Their music releases pressure drops and predicts even greater possibilities." Aquila took them seriously, even when they formed groups with some crazy names, Sniff Nasal, Coto Vêlage, and especially Le Donneur. But soon, the vague judgments of Aquila escalated into an active protest. "Hope is the key to action, not flying high, not the void, not alone. I hear a broken voice -- it's mine! -- I hear laughter." The children weren't listening to him anymore. Living music, as a whole, sometimes hides behind dirty old planes. A captain is called into the arms of a soldier and the two have to sit happily on the dance floor, shoes are hidden in the trash. Instead of competing, we do things. Before being recycled, Androïd Aquila wrote: "With so many resources and projects, Les Problèmes Urbains, Terrine's latest album, is certainly one of the most demanding (comical) in the world." Features Jean Cronier and Jean Detrémont.

AL KARPENTER: Musik From A Private Hell LP (BRD 039LP)
"Beyond riot music from the MC5 to Sham 69, in front of Arthur Russell's Death and after Klein's Lifetime, Al Karpenter and Mattin come out from behind the mask of Lou Reed's Lulu." --Guy Mercier

In this moment of uncertainty and environmental trauma, as you recoil in the face of an emotional overload that demands retreat or even flight, a certain use of solitude in confinement has generated the possibility of taking it all on, of being with others again while still listening in solitude. Music From A Private Hell describes an understanding of sound as a habitable substance from this degree-zero of isolation. A handful of songs written in iron and dust, that allow just enough fiction or myth as to turn technology into a weapon. As Deleuze and Guattari tell us in On The Line: "run away, but when you run, bring a weapon." A remedy for mass fatalism, Hell begins with the first song, in which a tambourine of some sort plays an ostinato rhythm, punctuating each phrase with a long note that communes with the shadows. Of interest here are not the rhythms that recur throughout the record but their relationship to colors and timbres. The different harmonic openings and resonances evoke the different kinds of tension that occur when skin touches flame. "We'll burn it down before you land here," says a disembodied voice, and various noises and sound effects cut through it, indifferent to the threat, as futuristic today as they were at their inception. Al Karpenter's voice is a weapon. His inexpressive whisper is a weapon. On this record, the human voice is an excess, a surplus of the body; it is at once outside and inside. It can be listened to peacefully, but it can also generate the anguish of a voice attempting to escape from language, setting the logos free in the wilderness, scavenging in the semiotic debris.

CALL SUPER: Cherry Drops I 12" (FEELYRHEAD)
Cherry Drops is a collection of tracks written by Call Super. It was started around the time they were working on a larger project called Tell Me I Didn't Choose This, that reflected on a period in their life of upheaval, trauma and self-discovery. That project is bound up in a series of compositions for a self-made instrument called an Epi-Harp, clarinet, piano and percussion and a collection of paintings, two of which feature on the covers of the two releases that make up Cherry Drops. However, the music on Cherry Drops became a release from that project, a distraction from painful reflections and recollections. It had to be music with a direct dancefloor connection because it was in those spaces where Call Super found release through those pivotal periods in their life.

ROLANDO, TONY: Old Cool Echoes Cassette (SAUNA 066CS)
Tony Rolando's debut release Old Cool Echoes is the kind of tape you flip over and play again and again. His second release, an LP for Important titled Breakin' Is A Memory, will be available in early 2022. A CD titled Shared System will follow. Imagine if you wished away your surroundings and found yourself in a synthetic landscape where the simplest three-color pattern animated an entire horizon. If you could suppress your memory enough to experience the new beauty of it, but not so much that you lost the pieces of yourself that make life worth living, this could be your soundtrack. For more than a decade, Tony Rolando has composed electricity into musical instruments at Make Noise. When he collaborated with Alessandro Cortini in 2019 to create the Strega instrument, the experience rekindled Tony's love of composing and recording music. On Old Cool Echoes, Tony follows mutating patterns and slow timbral gradients, allowing them to suggest composition as much as he does, occasionally exploring digital media catacombs and dabbling in the microtonal, all with minimal percussion interruption.

VANDERMARK, KEN: The Field Within a Line CD (CVSD 080CD)
With his riveting performance in the inaugural Sequesterfest online festival in April 2020, Ken Vandermark inspired the Black Cross Solo Sessions. Already in the early days of lockdown, making good on the promise -- or threat -- of protracted off-road time, Vandermark had dedicated himself to the creation of a new book of works for solo reed instruments, which he debuted that day. The result of this watershed moment for the Chicago-based improvisor and composer was a body of works that reassert his seriousness and test his ability to reflect and reevaluate. The compositions, which are platforms for invention, are dealt with in relatively economical, almost stripped-down fashion, ringing with a kind of bell-like clarity and focus. Most tracks are on the shorter side, straight to the point, featuring the rippling intensity that is a Vandermark hallmark, but with an altogether reborn sense of purpose. Pieces are dedicated to filmmakers, photographers, and painters, musicians, choreographers, and writers, pointing outward from the hermetic situation of the pandemic to a network of creative icons. Recorded at home in the detailed chamber sonics of his living room, they offer a bulwark against adversity -- the triumph of an endlessly questing mind over the terror of enforced stasis. Liner notes by Vandermark, cover art and design by Christopher Wool.

Corbett vs. Dempsey on Black Cross Solo Sessions: "In our lifetime. We hear this phrase repeated often these days. About things we have never experienced. The sense of global isolation imposed by COVID-19 has literally given us pause, required reflection on something unique in our lifetime. Musicians have been particularly hard hit by the virus, its travel bans and supply chain clogs. They faced an exaggerated number of unfamiliar conditions, many of them adverse, some of them career threatening and anxiety provoking. All of a sudden, players who were accustomed to the constant refreshment of different partners in shifting circumstances found themselves alone at home. But... what better time, we thought, to make a solo record? A production collaboration between artist Christopher Wool and Corbett vs. Dempsey, Black Cross Solo Sessions culminates in eight individual responses to the predicament of creative music during this unprecedented moment in our lifetime. All of the BCSS packages feature artwork by Wool, a distinctive black cross image that has been a part of some of his work since the outset of the pandemic, in this case decisively laid atop images of his paintings. The musicians have worked under a range of conditions, recording where possible -- at home, out in the world, or in the studio -- and each release has its own backstory, a highly contingent tale that speaks to the adaptability of creative musicians, their resilience and power in the face of a devastating obstacle. A personal statement. A singular response. The solo record is a special challenge. Nowhere to hide, no place to run."

MCPHEE, JOE: Route 84 Quarantine Blues CD (CVSD 081CD)
Joe McPhee's response to the challenge of making a new CD of solo music during COVID was to go at it head on, to address the present in its starkest aspects, to reach for comfort in the music of great composers, and to speak directly to the virus in no uncertain terms. The result is unlike any other of McPhee's many records, a variety show of improvisations, favorite compositions, field recording, multi-tracking, incantation and recitation. After searching for the right studio-like setting with an ideal sound, but hampered by the restrictions of quarantine, he abandoned such hope and dug out a clothes closet in his Poughkeepsie house, where he could approach the task with an unconventional intimacy. In the dead of night, McPhee played luscious versions of compositions by Carla Bley and Charles Mingus, extrapolating on their melodies, even singing a Joni Mitchell lyric to Mingus's "Goodbye Porkpie Hat". Elsewhere he plays harrowing tenor saxophone improvisations, a plaintive tone entering his melancholic melodic sensibility. On the title track, McPhee layers a dozen aching blues lines atop a field recording of the namesake highway, and in another piece he discovers an entire drum choir in the noise of dripping water on a tin plate in his sink, something he dedicates to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose death was announced moments before he noticed the environmental sound. On one of several very short, intense tracks, McPhee literally attempts to reverse the virus by intoning a spell-like chant: "Out, damned bug/Out, damned bug!" The package includes extensive track-by-track liner notes and a poem by McPhee, with artwork and design by Christopher Wool.

LEE, OKKYUNG: Na-Reul CD (CVSD 082CD)
Okkyung Lee's is perhaps the most harrowing of the Black Cross Solo Sessions stories. At the onset of COVID, the cellist was called to travel to Korea to be with her dying father. The trip was sudden and didn't allow her to bring her instrument, but once there she was unable to return to New York because of the stringent lockdown. For months she was stranded without her cello, unable to practice or make any music. This intense alienation took a long time to lift. Indeed, even after she made it back to the States, Lee found it impossible to reconnect with the music for a period. The invitation to make a new solo CD for BCSS inspired her to jump-start her playing and in the process, she has made one of the most profound and beautiful CDs in recent memory, an almost impossible to describe amalgam of string and wood and voice and magic. Lee does not release many records, so each one is a major event. A stunning studio production, Na-Reul is that and more, its nine tracks, as Lee puts it, a "raw and direct" response to the traumatic events of 2020 and the turbulent emotions that accompanied it. With liner notes by the artist and artwork and design by Christopher Wool.

VELOSO, MORENO: Every Single Night CD (CVSD 084CD)
At a time before COVID, Brazilian singer/songwriter/producer Moreno Veloso began singing his children to sleep. After the virus set in, this habit took on added significance, a father's reassurance. The music he chose for these nocturnes was drawn from friends and heroes, a selection of beautiful tunes and lyrics that began to form itself into a songbook of sorts, and Veloso started recording these pieces after the kids were tucked in. Gently surrounded by the night sounds outside his apartment, working very directly and on his own, he crafted a group of these lullabies into a CD that is at once soothing and haunting, the deep sense of emotionality and fragility countered with buoyancy and optimism. Veloso, who is part of the royal family of Brazilian music, has an angelic voice, his phrasing effortless and light. Here, with nothing but guitar and vocals, his musicianship shines especially brightly; the program moves along with absolute conviction, one song abutting another as if it was inevitable, nothing else could work, the sequence begging for repeat listens. This is a first for Veloso, who has almost never recorded anyone else's music -- on Every Single Night he covers songs by or associated with his father Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa (Moreno's godmother), Nelson Angelo, the rock group Barão Vermelho, Lulu Santos, Augustin Lara, a classic samba and a surprise bonus track from Snow White. Extensive track-by-track liner notes by Veloso, a photo of the cozy spot he recorded the songs, and artwork and design by Christopher Wool.

CAUSA SUI: Szabodelico 2LP (EPR 063LP)
2021 repress; tri-color striped vinyl. Double LP version. Something different from Causa Sui. While Causa Sui have always had one foot in heavy psychedelic rock, they've had the other one deep in a wide variety of esoteric styles. On this set, that other dimension of the band is being explored full-scale. Szabodelico paints with a colorful palette, both compositionally and sonically -- digging deep into an assortment of cultures, eras and sounds with a true crate-digger mindset. Throughout their 15-year life-span, Causa Sui has always been about seeking out new directions, exploring the past and the present in a way that's unique at each step of their subtle progression -- forging new paths into an existing map. Szabodelico feels like discovering a small room under the stairs of your own house: familiar, yet new and exciting. Their latest vision is an elegantly zoned-out version of itself: a turn inward. Anti-bombastic, yet rich with ecstatic harmonics and dynamics. The band stringed together a long series of sessions in 2019 and early 2020 in their studio in Odense, often prioritizing playful first takes and good vibes rather than clinical perfection. Sparsely dubbed and mixed with a natural, full-bodied flavor by Jonas Munk during the summer of 2020, each track has its own aesthetic. There's no simple equation to sum up the 13 individual parts of the album, but as a whole it creates an entity that's as complete as each of its parts. From the windblown opener "Echoes of Light", to the closing slow-motion epic "Merging Waters" you'll find yourself asking "where did the time go?" The answer of course is: Szabodelico.

ATTITUDE!: Pause & Effect LP (ESPDISK 5048LP)
Extraordinary NYC trio Attitude! combine free jazz and post-punk with pointed commentary about issues of race, gender, the pandemic, and political autonomy. Rose Tang, a Mongol from Sichuan, sings/recites and plays guitar, piano, and percussion. Her album with Roses & Roaches, And Yet We Ain't Alone, was released by 577 earlier in 2021. Mentored by free jazz legend Daniel Carter, Tang plays in about 30 bands and ensembles in New York and Seattle. Her music, which she hates to be labeled, may be called punk rock, post-punk, free jazz, spoken word, experimental improv, avant garde, or Chinese rock and folk. Tang calls her music genre "weird shit". She is also a journalist and was a protestor at Tiananmen Square. Tenor saxophonist Ayumi Ishito, from Japan, plays in a plethora of bands along the jazz/rock spectrum. She spent three years studying performance and composition at Berklee, where her instructors included George Garzone, Hal Crook, and Frank Tiberi. In 2017, Ayumi joined Marc Edwards & Slipstream Time Travel, led by Marc Edwards, former drummer of Cecil Taylor's band. Currently, Ayumi is a regular member of The Jazz Thieves, GADADU, Eighty-pound Pug, Platypus Revenge, and Big Squid. Ayumi has released two albums of her original compositions, View from a Little Cave (2016) and Midnite Cinema (2019). Drummer, composer, and educator Wen-Ting Wu Wen-Ting Wu, from Taiwan, combines jazz drive and classical rigor. She was a member of Golden Melody Award-winning band Chang & Lee and Hello Nico in Taiwan before she moved to New York in 2016 and earned her Master of Jazz Performance Degree in Queens College. Besides being a member in Frank Lacy's Concert Jazz Ensemble currently, she leads her own band. The group came together to play one song at an event. ESP-Disk', already familiar with the separate work on the NYC scene of all three members, immediately invited them to make an album. After intensive rehearsals, the members recorded the album in a one-day session, then reunited during the pandemic to add words about its effect to an existing instrumental on "8 Steps/7 O'Clock". This album is simultaneously part of ESP-Disk's drive to revive weird rock and an extension of the label's famed free-jazz legacy.

VA: Thai? Dai! - The Heavier Side of the Luk Thung Underground LP (FKR 044LP)
2021 repress; originally released in 2011. Fourteen slabs of the heaviest Thai funk and psych rockers ever committed to vinyl. The styles featured on this compilation fall somewhere between luk thung ("song of the countryside") and luk krung ("song of the city"). Bangkok was a melting pot for the evolution of these two genres, the former alluding to musical themes and lyrics aimed at the wider national population and the latter looking westward with a more urban audience in mind. Thai? Dai! collects experiments by both little-known groups and established figures like Plearn Promdan. Even within Thailand the majority of these tunes remain unissued outside of this compilation, making this a truly essential glimpse into the strange underbelly of Thai luk thung in all its unique, original, and outlandish glory; a small snapshot of an otherwise forgotten era, gloriously remastered from the original sources and officially licensed from the original label, Sound of Siam Co. Ltd. Includes performances by Sroeng Santi; Plearn Promdan; Rung Petchburi; Rung Fah Puping; Petch Burapa; Teungjai Bunpraruksa; Riem Daranoi; and Jalwal, Annie & Geerasak.

GAINSBOURG & JEAN-CLAUDE VANNIER, SERGE: Les Chemins De Katmandou LP (FKR 100LP)
2021 repress. After decades in the making, Finders Keepers present the first-ever pressing of Serge Gainsbourg's most elusive and coveted soundtrack studio recordings, co-written, arranged, and orchestrated by the genius Jean-Claude Vannier (the arranger behind 1971's Histoire De Melody Nelson) during what many consider to be the dynamic duo's most definitive creative period. Believed to have been lost in a studio fire by Gainsbourg enthusiasts for over forty years (a myth that also shrouds Morricone's lost Danger Diabolik soundtrack), the misplaced master-tapes for the drug-fueled/Mai 68 cash-in/road-movie Les Chemins De Katmandou (1969) have been widely considered the final audio jigsaw piece in an immaculate discography/filmography, thus earning this soundtrack bona fide holy grail status amongst the most avid disc detectives. Featuring the original crack team of Paris based players now recognized as French library music royalty, this album epitomizes the inimitable musical direction and expert psychedelic pop musicianship that graced classic Gainsbourg/Vannier soundtracks like La Horse (1970), Cannabis (1970), and Sex Shop (1972), the sound that laid the stylistic, future-proof foundations for subsequent decades of forward-thinking Gallic funk mastery. Comprising Vannier's signature recipe of thick plucked bass lines, close-mic'd drums, biting clavinet, and Eastern influenced strings and percussion (and a sprinkling of subtle traditional French instrumentation) the soundtrack to Les Chemins De Katmandou ("The Road To Katmandu", or "The Pleasure Pit") captures Vannier and Gainsbourg in the first year of their creative partnership capturing their unique embryonic energy. The music on this record contains the full extent of the music found on the newly discovered studio tapes. It has since been preserved through the "baking" process, re-emulsified, transferred, remastered, and recompiled and sequenced in accordance with the original screenplay in close collaboration with Finders Keepers and inaugural artist, Jean-Claude Vannier.

After years of mythology, misinterpretation, and procrastination Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton finally chooses Finders Keepers as the ideal collaborators to release "the right tracks" from his über-legendary psych/prog/punk peculiarity shopping list known as The Nurse With Wound List, commencing with a French specific Volume One of this authentically titled Strain Crack Break series. Featuring some Finders Keepers' regulars amongst galactic Gallic rarities, this double-vinyl dossier demystifies some of the essential French free jazz and Parisian prog inclusions from the alphabetical "dedication" inventory as printed the anti-bands 1979 industrial milestone debut. When Steven Stapleton, Heman Pathak, and John Fothergill's anti-band Nurse With Wound decided to include an alphabetical dedication to all their favorite bands on the back of their inaugural LP the notion of creating a future record dealers' trophy list couldn't have been further from their minds. By adding a list of untraveled European mythical musicians and noise makers to their own debut release of unchartered industrial art rock they were merely providing a suggestive support system of existing potential like-minded bands. Many of the rare, obscure and unpronounceable genre-free records on The Nurse With Wound List have slowly found their own feet and stumbled in to the homes of open-minded outer-national vinyl junkies, mostly without consultation of the enigmatic NWW map. Via vinyl vacations, on cheap flights and interrail tickets, buying bargain bin LPs on a shoestring while oblivious to the pending pension worthy price tags after their 40-year vintage, Stapleton and Fothergill, even if you've never heard of them, were at the bottom of the pit before "digging" became pay dirt. The List has been mythologized, misunderstood, and misconstrued. It's also been overlooked, overestimated, and under-appreciated in equal measures. Bolstered by the sub-title "Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden," all bands on the inventory (many chosen on the strength of just one track alone) were chosen for their genre-defying qualities. Forty years after Nurse With Wound's first record, Finders Keepers, in close collaboration with Steve Stapleton remind fans of this kind of "lost" music, that there once existed a feint path which was worn away decades before major label pop property developers built over this psychedelic underground. A collaborative attempt to officially, authentically, and legally compile the best tracks from the list, succeeding where many overzealous nerds have deferred. The first volume of the series focuses exclusively on individual tracks of French origin, the country that unsurprisingly hosted the highest content of bands on the list. Comprising of musique concrète, free jazz, Rock In Opposition, Zeuhl School space rock, macabre ballet music, lo-fi sci-fi, and classic horror literature inspired prog.

Features Jacques Thollot, Philippe Besombes, Igor Wakhévitch, Mahjun, Lard Free, Etron Fou Leloublan, Jean Cohen-Solal, Z. N. R., Red Noise, Pierre Henry, Horrific Child, Dashiell Hedayat, and Jean Guérin.

DUB NARCOTIC SOUND SYSTEM: Boot Party LP (GLAM 027LP)
The classic debut LP by Dub Narcotic Sound System, Boot Party, originally released on K Records in 1996 and unavailable on vinyl for 25 years. The oddball indie-funk collective Dub Narcotic Sound System was spearheaded by vocalist Calvin Johnson, the former frontman of the legendary Beat Happening as well as the founder of the famed K Records label. Named in honor of Johnson's own Olympia, WA-based basement studio Dub Narcotic, the project was begun in 1994 with a rapid-fire series of funk-, rap-, and reggae-influenced singles including "Bite", "Fuck Shit Up", "Booty Run", and "Shake-a-Puddin'"; from the outset Johnson was the group's sole constant member, although over the course of subsequent releases, including the EPs Industrial Breakdown (1996), Ridin' Shotgun (1995), and Ship to Shore (1996), the revolving lineup grew to include Olympia scenesters like Lois Maffeo as well as Larry Butler, Todd Ranslow, and Brian Weber, all three members of the hip-hop unit Dead Presidents. The first Dub Narcotic Sound System full-length, Rhythm Record, Vol. One: Echoes From the Scene Control Room, appeared in 1995; later efforts included 1996's Boot Party and 1998's Out of Your Mind. Sideways Soul, a collaboration with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, followed in 1999. Trouser Press wrote that "when not delving deep into the usual sorts of ambient studio trickery, the songs hit a '60s R&B stride, bathing in the stoned soul picnic ambience with uplifting spirit." Deep red vinyl.

LUTTO LENTO: LEGENDO LP (SPCTR 016LP)
LEGENDO is a work of sonic weird fiction. A pulp fantasy. A descent through the cracks in reality, punctuated by bizarre encounters and freaky transformations. It oozes an odd mixture of wonder and fear, a fascination with whatever might be lurking around the next unlit corner, met with relentless excitement and leading towards ghastly discoveries. Like a vision of a new mythological age, one that aims more at subverting and making fun of itself than educating towards any kind of morality. Or a self-conscious fantasy RPG turning into a full-on immersive experience. The author, Lubomir Grzelak AKA Lutto Lento, arranged this eccentric narrative as a follow up to his previous LP, the ominous Dark Secret World, while also settling out to subvert the atmosphere of that record. In his Haunter debut he embraces his own quirkier side, delving further into eerie derision and surreal trickery. He achieves that by remodeling his penchant for heavy bass and gloomy dub into a kind of otherworldly folk music, drawing in de-territorialized string instruments, cheeky digital sound design, Coil-ian horror synths, and drums that remind as much of heavy metal as of Hollywood neo-classicism. It is by pushing the envelope on the most contradictory elements that LEGENDO ascends to a form of mocking poetry. Many weird characters are encountered through the narrative: from the various musicians that contributed to the music (such as vocalist John Glacier, guitarist Adam Repucha and koto player Katarzyna Karpińska), but also many fringe fascinations that hail from Grzelak's native Poland: from the 1897 painting "Skarby Sezamu" by Stanislaw Wyspiański that inspired the track of the same name, to the delirious paganism of outsider artist Stanislaw Skukalski, to the lullaby referenced in "Iskiereczka". These entities all dwell inside LEGENDO and conduct its chapters, rendering the liminal dimension of its sound as real as it is in its creator's mind.

MOONDOG: The Viking of Sixth Avenue 2LP (HJR 018LP)
2021 restock, originally released in 2005. Tremendous gatefold presentation and one of HJR's most impressive documents to date.

Poet, composer, street musician and cosmologist Moondog (Louis Thomas Hardin, 1916-1999) learned rhythm from American Indians and counterpoint from J.S. Bach. Many of his recordings feature instruments he built himself: trimba, yukh, tuji, oo. Sometimes you can hear in the background the streets of New York, where Moondog often slept. In addition, he was blind, due to an accident when he was 15. Sometime in the 1950s, fed up with being mistaken on the street for Christ (his regular busking spot was uptown on Sixth) Moondog put on a Viking costume, with spear and horned helmet; and he dressed like this until the late 1970s (by which time he was working with orchestras in Germany). Moondog's renown was extensive: Igor Stravinsky lobbied a judge on Moondog's behalf. Charlie Parker wanted to play with him, Julie Andrews DID play with him, and he was feted by the likes of Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando, and Steve Reich. Andy Warhol's mother designed one of his covers, and Weegee took photographs of him (included in the booklet). Janis Joplin covered him, Mr. Scruff owes him badly, and Antony and the Johnsons covers his songs. This is the first retrospective of Moondog's music -- 36 tracks from 1949-1995, most of them exceptionally rare, all of them miraculous.

HALO, ABDEL HADI & THE EL GUSTO ORCHESTRA OF ALGIERS: Abdel Hadi Halo & The El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers CD (HJR 032CD)
2021 restock. Chaabi ("of the people") has its roots in the Andalusian music of Moorish Spain, spreading to North Africa with exiled Jewish and Moorish communities; but it really took off in the music schools, parties and bars of occupied, post-WWII Algiers, where its Andalusian, Middle Eastern and North African lineage fused with the Mediterranean soundtrack of that era -- chanson, jazz, snatches of tango, a little boogie-woogie. A chaabi band combines traditional instruments such as the quanoun (or zither), mandole, oud, gambar (a stringed turtle shell), bendir and derbouka (types of drum); together with the piano, flute, banjo (brought to Algiers by American GIs), violin (played upright on the lap to save space in crowded venues), accordion and bongos. With subject matter ranging from God to pretty girls, the songs often touch on taboo issues. For this recording, the Abdel Hadi Halo & The El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers includes four singers -- joined in chorus by the voices of the entire orchestra and five-man banjo, percussion and violin sections. The scale and organization are thrilling; the music is swirling and improvisatory, surging from the haunted to the bluesy, the devotional to the knees-up. This album was recorded on the tilting fifth floor of the Conservatoire d'Algiers, in a room overlooking the sea on one side, and the Casbah on the other: the orchestra was recorded live in full flight -- all together, in continuous takes.

VA: Living Is Hard: West African Music in Britain, 1927-1929 2LP (HJR 033LP)
2021 restock. Honest Jon's Records has prepared a series drawing on some of the earliest recordings in the EMI Hayes Archive -- recovered from more than 150,000 78s -- staggering music from Iraq, Turkey, Caucasia, Lebanon, Iran (including sides made in Old Street, London, in 1909), Egypt, and the Belgian Congo. This series opener presents the music of the West African underground of 1920s Britain, recorded at Hayes and released on the Zonophone label (which exported nearly all the records to West Africa). You can hear Caribbean influences here, the promise of highlife there, but Living Is Hard mostly disavows fusion and assimilation. And by contrast with antecedents in the history of black music in Britain -- minstrelsy and spirituals, for example, ragtime and jazz -- these recordings are unhitched from the protocols of a white listenership. These are startling, trenchant, elemental roots -- carrying troubled news home, along with signs of the new African nationalism -- and an enthralling glimpse of other lives, another time. Artists include: Oni Johnson, Isaac Jackson, Ben Simmons, Harry E. Quashie, Douglas Papafio, Prince Zulamkah, The West African Instrumental Quintet, The Ga Quartet, Domingo Justus, James Tucker, John Mugat, Kumasi Trio, James Thomas, Nicholas De Heer, George Williams Aingo and James Brown. HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble 2LP (HJR 042LP)
2021 restock; Double LP version. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is comprised of eight brothers from the south side of Chicago who come from an extraordinary musical family. Other sisters and brothers are professional musicians, their mothers are singers, and Phil Cohran, their father, has roots running back to Mississippi, the musical hothouse of 1940s St. Louis, Sun Ra in Chicago in the 1950s, and the founding of the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)...This album is the result of a chance encounter in 2005: during a cold market day on Portobello Road, strains of Ellington and the swagger of brassy funk cut through the morning fog. Stationed on the corner of Talbot Road, eight horns and a drum kit rocked Ladbroke Grove. Since their initial meeting, Honest Jon's and HBE have stayed close. In 2007, HBE contributed a monster of a track "Sankofa" to the Tony Allen remix project, Lagos Shake (HJR 034CD/LP), and have not stopped blowing minds since.

At last, fresh installments in Honest Jon's acclaimed, much-loved series: open-hearted, bittersweet, mash-up postcards to the here and now, from young black London. As then, calypso carries the swing. There are four more Lord Kitchener songs -- in consideration of his wife leaving him for a GI, cricket umpires, a fling onboard an ocean-liner and West Indian poultry -- besides a hot mambo cash-in, cross-bred under his supervision, and an uproarious, teasing Ghanaian tribute to him in Fanti by London visitors The Quavers. The Mighty Terror contributes the woe-begotten, cautionary tale of his beloved Patricia's change of heart. Mona Baptiste with some wonderful, soulful exotica. Also finally getting some dues, the path-breaking Latin-African-jazz experiments of Ghanaian drummer and percussionist Buddy Pipp, with spine-tingling playing by the great Jamaican saxophonist Joe Harriott. Expert jazz idioms course sophisticatedly through all the selections, which include a straight-up, South London version of Duke Jordan's "Jordhu," something from Dizzy Reece's soundtrack -- brokered by Kenneth Tynan -- to the British crime film Nowhere to Go. KNIGHT & AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA, PETER: Crossed & Recrossed LP (HH 03210750LP)
Crossed & Recrossed presents two works composed by Peter Knight and inspired by mappings of imagined places by iconic Australian novelist, Gerald Murnane and Italian master, Italo Calvino. Simultaneously celebrating and deconstructing the tropes of minimalism, Crossed & Recrossed creates a series of musical mirages that form on an endless sonic horizon, reflecting and reimagining the wide-open spaces described in Murnane's iconic novel, The Plains and the labyrinthine streets of Calvino's Invisible Cities. Peter Knight's work sets up a post-minimal logic that refracts and disintegrates as you listen. The instrumentation of the chamber jazz orchestra is expanded with the unexpected additions of turntables, a reel-to-reel tape machine and live laptop signal processing. The sounds of acoustic instruments and voices are interwoven with field recordings cut onto vinyl and are filtered and augmented as Knight plays with your perceptions of what is heard and what is imagined. Time folds into itself in a very Calvino-esque manner, leaving you with the trace residue of moments half remembered.

As Artistic Director of one of Australia's leading contemporary music ensembles, the Australian Art Orchestra (AAO), Peter Knight has emerged as a significant force in contemporary music, initiating commissions, collaborations and performances with a diverse range of artists including recently: Anthony Braxton, Nicole Lizée, Amir ElSaffar and Alvin Lucier. He has also performed his works with the Orchestra at major international festivals.

The Australian Art Orchestra was formed in 1994 and is Australia's leading contemporary music ensemble. It explores the meeting points between disciplines and cultures, and imagines new musical forms to reflect the energy and diversity of 21st century Australia.

Crossed & Recrossed features an embarrassingly rich list of performers including: Simon Barker (drums), Erkki Veltheim (violin), Joe Talia (Revox tape machine), Vanessa Tomlinson (vibraphone), Tilman Robinson (electronics) and Andrea Keller (piano), to name just a few.

This deluxe gatefold edition features a reproduction of a new original text by Gerald Murnane. Mastered and cut by Helmut Erler, Dubplates & Mastering Berlin. "Tip On" gatefold; includes download.

"She has created a sound that reliably taps into our subconscious and frees us from linear time" --The Quietus. Catherine Christer Hennix (born 1948 in Stockholm) is an artist, poet, composer, and philosopher with a strong interest in logic and formal music theory. In late-1960s Sweden, she was a pioneer of experimenting with mainframe computer-generated composite soundwave forms, and in the 1970s she was a key protagonist of the Downtown School along with La Monte Young and Henry Flynt, with whom she has collaborated on numerous occasions. She pursued studies with master vocalist Pandit Pran Nath and led the just-intonation live electronic ensembles Hilbert Hotel and The Deontic Miracle (featured on this recording). She was a professor of mathematics and computer science and assistant to and coauthor with A. S. Esenin-Volpin, for which she received the Centenary Prize-fellow Award from the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. Hennix's interest in drone music and the meditative, trance-like state it induces is apparent in her exploration of similar music in many other cultures and traditions, including, for example, Japanese gagaku music and the 13th-century vocal music of Pérotin and Léonin.

BOATENG, WILSON: Asew Watchman 12" (KALITA 12019EP)
Kalita Records announce the first ever re-release of "Asew Watchman" and "Mabre Agu", two phenomenal pieces of Ghanaian boogie/burger highlife from Wilson Boateng's sought-after 1988 record Highlife Rock. With original copies impossible to find, it's perfect time for Kalita Records to shine a spotlight on Wilson and his music via a loud-cut 12" single optimized for dancefloor action. In addition, Kalita invite Amsterdam-based producer and DJ Mendel back into the fold for two remixes sourced from the original multitrack session tapes. Following on from their Nana Tuffour retrospective in 2018, here Kalita focus again on the 1980s phenomenon of burger highlife, a crossover of highlife melodies with synthesizers, disco and boogie that took over Ghanaian airwaves during the decade and beyond. Originally privately released in a small run by Wilson himself, "Asew Watchman" and "Mabre Agu" were both recorded in Brixton, London in 1988 after his relocation from Ghana to the UK in search of stardom, following the footsteps of burger highlife stars Pat Thomas, George Darko and Thomas Frempong. Sadly, however, after pressing one thousand copies of the album, and although the music itself rivalled the very best burger highlife of the time, Wilson was beset by various obstacles both in London and back home. As such, the record was unable to make the headway that it deserved, and the music was soon lost into obscurity. Nevertheless, with original copies now selling for triple figures on the second-hand market, and after a two-year search to track Wilson down, Kalita now work with and celebrate the outstanding burger highlife of Wilson Boateng.

Spiritczualic Enhancement Center are a "spectral trance-jazz ensemble with a psychedelic-punk methodology", as they define themselves -- an eclectic group of 15 musicians, almost a collective, from Germany, Israel, Iran, USA, Turkey, UK, Russia and former Yugoslavia. Landing on Kryptox, with their fourth record, this is musical material the band recorded in several sessions in Romania and the Czech Republic, inside a church in Hamburg and while staying with a commune in rural Denmark over the last years. Their live shows are wild happenings and their studio sessions are improvised rituals. Making use of traditional instruments, self-built electronics, synthesizers and a large rhythm section. The band describes the recording process as "a head-hunting tapestry woven with the tonal colors of music". Recorded by 15 musicians spanning from Japan and Turkey to Moldova and Iran. The hypnotic music the collective creates is deeply psychedelic, but not in a prog or indie way. This music is more inspired by Miles Davis or Lonnie Listen Smith in the early 1970s. After finishing and editing the album the band went to an old empty villa in Nice at the Côte d'Azur and later proceeded to Istria's Adriatic coast to mix and finalize the session and create that what is ready to be released on Kryptox. In case you have the chance one day to see the band live: Don't miss: Since their formation 2017, they have performed in twelve countries, including festivals like Fusion, Camp Cosmic and Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Their explosive live performances and three albums have created a buzz around the band. Gilles Peterson called the group an "incredible act which he'd love to see live." And no other than Damo Suzuki of CAN is a fan and joined the band on stage at several gigs. For fans of: Khruangbin, LCD Soundsystem, CAN, Four Tet, Squarepusher.

RADA, SISSI: Nanodiamond LP (KRY 023LP)
Sissi Rada is a wonderfully ambiguous personality and one of the best harpists for contemporary classical music in Europe and at the same time producer of beautiful abstract electronica songs. Her album Nanodiamond comes out on Berlin label Kryptox with guest vocals by Lena Platonos, co-production by Brian Eno on "81948 (2000 OM69)" and Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars on "Maps" and "Blueblack Tomb". A futuristic body of work that combines the sweet melancholy of the classical harp with subtle electronic soundscapes and Sissi Rada's magical voice.

Sissi Rada was born in Athens, studied in Amsterdam and Berlin (Universität der Künste) and currently lives in Berlin, establishing herself as an active part of the new experimental music scene. She is a member of the David August Ensemble and makes music for art performances and modern theater. Besides her electronic and neo-jazz experiments in the Berlin underground, she has also built a substantial career as an established classical harpist. She is a member of Teodor Currentzis' musica AEterna orchestra and a frequent collaborator of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Nanodiamond is a melancholic journey through a universe of romantic harp atmospheres, fragile melodies, subtle impressionistic vibes -- based on lo-fi electronic sounds, noisy textures, raw sound design and at times almost robotic rhythmic constructions. A melancholic voice and subtle harmonic and melodic structures, that will sometimes catch you immediately and at other times will only be understood after a second or third listen, add a magical touch. It is music that you probably never heard before. Greek harpist living in Berlin switching between the neo-classical scene and the electronic underground. For fans of: Björk, Portishead, Mary Lattimore, Sophie Arca, Sam Gendel, Sega Botega.

NERVOUS SS/RAT CAGE: Skopje Vs Sheffield LP (MUS 231LP)
It's a stark and baron land out there right now. What everyone needs is some fucking loud, fast, uncompromising raw punk to drown out the constant bullshit being broadcasted as 2021 develops. Both following up storming debut LP's with five new tracks plus a local cover each, Nervous SS and Rat Cage clash head-to-head on this 12-song barrage of hell for leather punk rock. The Nervous SS side (Skopje) undoubtedly wears a Totalitär influence on its sleeve, but combine that sweet sound with a complete powerhouse vocal bombardment that sets Nervous SS a cut above the rest. Flip to the Rat Cage side (Sheffield) for a rapid attack of Scandi riffs with the relentless urgency everyone has grown to know and love from the band. The side ends with a U.K. Subs cover, clearly displaying Rat Cage's classic British punk influence. With Master dials set firmly to "destroy mode", this record will be your savior in these dark times. Crank it.

KOMA: Internment Failure LP (MUS 234LP)
Leeds/London band Koma deliver their debut LP Internment Failure. 12 tracks of brutal, unrelenting, constantly contorting, and mutating hardcore -- perfectly encapsulating the desperation of living in the final generations of a failed state, watching the life of the planet ebb away. Frantically written and recorded across two cities within the band's first 12 months of existence, Koma casts a wide net of global influences but refuses to be indebted to any one singular band or scene. At times recalling the classic Finnish and Swedish hardcore of Mellakka and Crude SS mixed with the raw distorted brute power of Voĉo Protesta and Bastard; echoes of the unhinged mayhem of Ataque Frontal and Chain Reaction subside to moments of gothic tension like Tozibabe and Pyhäkoulu. Koma makes a bold and ambitious statement of intent, a wholly-realized vision and fully-formed sound of pummeling riffs and powerful vocals that will remind of Sacrilege's debut.

ALGARA: Absortos En El Tedio Eterno LP (MUS 238LP)
News from the front: Algara's first LP is here. From Barcelona, the land where the CNT-FAI shined in 1936, now the anarchist bombs explode again through the twelve tracks of Absortos En El Tedio Eterno. Ever wondered what would have happened if the Rondos and Crass had joined forces at the Conway Hall or if Aviador Dro and Esplendor Geometrico never had a couple of judo kicks and the four started a new band? Well, then you are close to imagining how Algara sounds. At times sparse militant punk a la Crisis/Fallout filtered thru the KGB/Siniestro Total machine. At times minimal synthetic idealist anthems, but always revolutionary, forward thinking, and making the sound their own. The anonymous collective self-recorded Absortos En El Tedio Eterno in a Barcelona squat while engaging in their agitprop campaigns. With songs about poor working conditions, the constant evictions, youth unemployment, and a city consumed by tourism and other forms of gentrification, the LP is a cold call to arms for today's political punk. The LP sleeve shows members of the collective at one of their rendezvous point looking cool. Comes with an A2 double sided poster, 14-page manual for Sound Guerrilla booklet and a sticker. For fans of: Antorcha, Futurisk, Siniestro Total, Total Control, Aviador Dro, Crisis, Crass, Rondos.

JIYANE AND TREE-O, MALCOLM: UMDALI LP (M3H 009LP)
Operating from the fringes of the South African jazz scene, the enigmatic yet charismatic trombonist and pianist Malcolm Jiyane delivers a major contribution to the canon -- one shaped around dedications to key figures in his personal and professional life. Several years ago, Jiyane was dealing with the death of a band member, the birth of a daughter and the passing of his beloved mentor Johnny Mekoa, founder of the Music Academy of Gauteng, which Jiyane attended from a young age. These life-altering events give shape to the music's emotional register and its thematic concerns. In Black Music, his book of essays and critiques, Amiri Baraka makes the point that jazz musicians, be it in the construction of solos or in other aspects of composition, always draw on the works of their contemporaries or elders. How much outsiders pick up on that is really dependent on how au fait they are with the music. In this album, Jiyane finds comfort in this well-trodden path. Two songs make for great examples. "Umkhumbi kaMa", a jazz-funk track celebrating the creative force as inhabited by women, the motif to Herbie Hancock's "Ostinato (Suite for Angela)" is a clear reference, connecting in one swift move, not only the musical traditions of the Black Atlantic but also the struggles and triumphs of women across space and time. On the same note, the free-form "Solomon, Tsietsi & Khotso", conjured in the same jam session that yielded SPAZA's Uprize! (M3H 007LP), appears here in a more fleshed out form as "Senzo seNkosi"; a tender dedication to Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O bass player Senzo Nxumalo. Jiyane's path to the realization of his debut album as frontman is more than merely one individual's breakthrough. Workshopped and recorded within two days in Johannesburg, UMDALI, not unlike Miles Davis's landmark Kind of Blue, stretches our idea of what it means to improvise within the context of jazz.

NEGATIVE NANCIES: Heatwave CD (PROTEUS 4076CD)
Negative Nancies exist in their own universe, sounding unlike anything else in New Zealand past or present. The songs evolve organically through rehearsal room experimentation yet, amid the art punk chaos, an irrepressible undercurrent of pop melodicism and moments of eerie psychedelic calm shine through the Casio+guitar+drums+vocals noise. Negative Nancies don't play by anyone's rules. Songs unfold in unusual ways with somber glory, impish mischief, wired anxiety or manic glee. It makes sense until it doesn't any more, and vice versa -- less Dada than Dunedina -- filtering observations about everyday human behavior and existential absurdity through an organic wild-yeast approach to song creation and performance. They don't want to be banned; they just want to play in a band. The recording brings out all the band's rickety fizzing danger and punk energy. Heatwave sounds like it was recorded in a concrete basement with mains leads running through puddles of water, everything crackling with arcing live electricity and a sense of danger. Maybe it was... who knows? Negative Nancies are an intergenerational conglomeration of musical explorers. Mackay and Smith have emerged from the subterranean shadows of Dunedin's experimental music scene -- their Richard Maybe's Passion for Nature duo performing at Audio Foundation's Lines of Flight, and Nowhere experimental music festivals -- while Elborado was a member of '80s and '90s underground Flying Nun recording artists such as The Terminals, Scorched Earth Policy and The Shallows.

LIGHTSEY AND RUDOLPH JOHNSON WITH THE ALL STARS, KIRK: Habiba LP (OTR 013LP)
2021 restock. Never released outside South Africa since its original release in 1974, Outernational Sounds presents one of the most sought-after international jazz exclusives ever to appear on South Africa's famous Gallo imprint: the funky, spiritual and outward bound Habiba. Limited, fully licensed vinyl reissue of a lost modal classic by renowned pianist Kirk Lightsey and Black Jazz stalwart Rudolph Johnson. As the archives of South Africa's premier record labels steadily give up the treasures that were hidden in the darkness of the apartheid era, the incredible heritage of South African jazz is gradually finding an international audience. And while most of the laurels are naturally for South Africa's own overlooked musicians, the South African discography contains a few sparkling, nearly unknown jazz sessions by visiting players. Habiba is the greatest of them -- a raw, impassioned set led by bop pianist Kirk Lightsey, who had been a regular sideman for Chet Baker and Sonny Stitt, and saxophonist Rudolph Johnson, a key player at the storied West Coast indie Black Jazz. Visits to the apartheid state by respected Black musicians were hardly a common occurrence during apartheid's darkest years -- so how did a crew of crack American jazz players end up in the Gallo studios? The story starts with the now almost forgotten crooner, Lovelace Watkins. Sometimes billed as "the Black Sinatra", the Detroit-born Watkins sang standards, show tunes and ballroom classics on the Las Vegas circuit. In his 1970s heyday he was a huge star in the UK and in southern Africa, where he toured regularly. In 1974 he hired a jazz big band to accompany him on a tour of South Africa -- and among their number were Lightsey and Johnson, as well as Mastersounds bassist Monk Montgomery, West Coast trombonist Al Hall Jr., and Marshall Royal, musical director of the Count Basie band. The tour was a huge success, and during downtime from performing, members of Watkin's group independently record no fewer than three albums. Two of these LPs appeared on the IRC label, billed as the Mallory-Hall Band -- the third, on the more prestigious Gallo, was Habiba. Three tracks deep, the album is a heavy-duty excursion into post-Coltrane spiritual modernism, ranging from the modal, cerebral intensity of the side-long title track "Habiba", to the downhome breakbeat groove of "There It Is", and the dark glitter of minor key waltz "Fresh Air". Long one of the most desired global jazz LPs, and never before available outside South Africa, Habiba is a forgotten masterpiece of its era.

TAPSCOTT WITH THE PAN-AFRIKAN PEOPLES ARKESTRA, HORACE: Flight 17 2LP (OTR 010LP)
2021 restock. Outernational Sounds presents a cornerstone document from the Los Angeles jazz underground, Flight 17 -- the first appearance on record of the legendary Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, led by their founder and mastermind, Horace Tapscott. Available on vinyl for the first time in 40 years. The Arkestra would allow the creativity in the community to come together, would allow people to recognize each other as one people. Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (P.A.P.A.) was one of the most transformative, forward-thinking and straight-up heavy big bands to have played jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. If P.A.P.A. doesn't have the interstellar rep of that other famous Arkestra, and if the name Tapscott doesn't ring bells like Monk or Tyner, there's a reason why: in an industry dominated by record labels, a band that doesn't record doesn't count. And the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra didn't record for nearly twenty years. But recording success was never their concern -- they weren't about that. First formed as the Underground Musicians Association in the early 1960s, Tapscott always wanted his group to be a community project. From their base in Watts, UGMA got down at the grassroots. The group was renamed the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra in 1971, and soon after they established a monthly residency at the Immanuel United Church of Christ which ran for over a decade, while still playing all over LA and beyond. But they never released a note of music. It was the intervention of fan Tom Albach that finally got them on wax. Determined that their work should be documented, Albach founded Nimbus Records specifically to release the music of Tapscott, the Arkestra, and the individuals that comprised it. The first recording sessions in early 1978 yielded enough material for two albums, and the first release was Flight 17. From the surging avant-gardism of Herbie Baker's title track to the laidback summertime groove of Kamonta Lawrence Polk's "Maui", or Roberto Miranda's up-tempo Latin jam "Horacio", Flight 17 showcased the radical voices of the Arkestra's members. Led out by Tapscott's hard-swinging piano, this is the first flight on wax of the West Coasts' foundational community big band -- energized, hip, and together. Contains two tracks previously only available on the 1997 CD edition: "Coltrane Medley" and "Village Dance", recorded live at the Immanuel United Church of Christ. 180 gram vinyl pressing by Pallas. Fully licensed from Nimbus West founder Tom Albach.

Insignificant instrumentation congregates on insignificant locations, leaving behind ghosts in a place of their own. We each choose our own light to follow in the hope it is the right one. German krautrock band Guru Guru was formed in 1968 as The Guru Guru Groove by Mani Neumeier (drums), Uli Trepte (bass), and Eddy Naegeli (guitar) (later replaced by American Jim Kennedy (guitar)). By the time of Guru Guru's debut in 1970, Ax Genrich had replaced Kennedy to solidify the classic Guru Guru line up. Guru Guru were related to the free jazz scene both through their work with Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer and through Neumeier, who had already won several jazz prizes before forming the band. They were also influenced by psychedelic rock artists including Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Rolling Stones, and early Pink Floyd. Among the band's friends were Amon Düül, Can, and Xhol Caravan, with whom Guru Guru often jammed. ERICKSON, ROKY: All That May Do My Rhyme LP (PL 066LP)
2021 restock; LP version. Play Loud! Productions present the first reissue of Roky Erickson's All That May Do My Rhyme, originally released in 1994. Roky Erickson is a legend. Former member of the 13th Floor Elevators, he was considered the white James Brown. Drug problems and diagnosed schizophrenia made him an outsider. By the '90s, he was struggling to survive on a $200 monthly social security check. In 1990, artists like R.E.M., ZZ Top, and the Jesus and Mary Chain recorded his songs for a tribute album. Erickson performed publicly for the first time in many years at the Austin Music Awards. In 1994, he returned to the studio with guitarists Charlie Sexton and the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary to record All That May Do My Rhyme. This record was released on CD, cassette, and vinyl in 1994 on Paul Leary's Trance Syndicate Records. Notes from the original press release: "Trance Syndicate is pleased to present the first studio recording in almost a decade by one of the most gifted, most influential, most inspired singer/songwriters from the Republic of Texas since Buddy Holly. Roky Erickson is back! performing new songs and a few classics in one of the best studios in Texas, backed by some of Texas' finest musicians." KNOWLES, ALISON: Sounds from the Book of Bean LP (R 085LP)
The first vinyl LP release from Fluxus pioneer Alison Knowles (b. 1933). Sounds from the Book of Bean is an assemblage of noises and texts related to "The Book of Bean" (1982), Knowles' eight-foot tall walk-in book constructed at Franklin Furnace in New York. This recording, the sounds of making the big book, was continually played back inside of the installation. Echoes of Yoshi Wada hammering together the circular spine of the book, other collaborators mixing ink, feeding a horse, the flowing waters of the Hudson Valley... all superimposed with texts and poems read by Knowles and her daughter Jessica Higgins. On the second side of the album, the piece "Essential Divisions" features Knowles performing with red, black, and white beans. Recorded in Annea Lockwood's underground studio, Knowles sounds the beans in glass, ceramics, wood, as well as in her mouth. Further bean histories and sound poems are recited, concluding with "Popular Bean Soup" -- an ancient recipe translated by George Brecht. Knowles' big books are, as she describes them, transvironments: a transformationally experienced environment. The phenomenological nature of her book is distilled aurally in the case of this record. As Knowles describes the end of her book, "the reader leaves via a ladder or out the window and through a muslin panel printed with contradictory wisdom concerning beans and dreaming... one can begin again either by going on or turning back." Originally published as a cassette in 1982 on the New Wilderness Audiographics label, this remastered edition has been transferred from original tapes. An expansive 20-page booklet is included, holding graphics and writings from Alison Knowles, George Quasha, and Charlie Morrow. Recorded by Alison Knowles, 1980. Produced by Alison Knowles, Sean McCann, and Charlie Morrow. Design by Alison Knowles, cover image courtesy George Quasha. Jessica Higgins also adds voice to tracks 1, 3, 4, 5.

TWOMEY, ALEX: Days Off CD (R 088CD)
Alex Twomey's Days Off, the second full-length album under his own name, pronounces his evolving compositional approach. Following The Entertainer (R 058LP, 2019), this album features a more intimate ensemble of piano, strings, bass, and guitar. Written between 2019 and 2021, the arrangements resemble pop-structured songs within the margins of sedate orchestral music. Twomey's use of electric guitar is also unique; more as a blurred harmonic brush propelling rhythmic cycles and key changes. The influence of Michael Nyman, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and other English-minimalists is present -- but Twomey as one-man composer, performer, and producer delivers a rare intimacy, a sardonic view of days better spent. We're transported to a restful couch in Alex's living room. His cats sleeping around you like gods in relief as the album echoes from his studio in the next room. With repeating chords of matched exuberance and melancholy, Days Off evokes a familiarity both optimistic and sentimental.

BELL, ANDY: The View From Halfway Down LP (SCR 170LP)
2021 repress; LP version. Blue vinyl. Ride guitarist/singer Andy Bell releases his debut solo album. The product of a gradual, four-year process and finished during lockdown, the album was entirely written and recorded by Andy, engineered by Gem Archer and mastered by Heba Kadry. Back in 2016, Andy was inspired by David Bowie's death to be more proactive about finishing his songs, more confident about sharing them and to channel all of this into finally making a solo album. He laid down some tracks in former Beady Eye and Oasis bandmate Gem's studio, but got diverted when Ride's live reunion blossomed into a full return. A run of two albums, an EP and two world tours later, it would take a pandemic to give Andy the space to complete The View From Halfway Down. From the ecstatic psych pop of "Love Comes In Waves", to the heady loops of "Indica" and deeply groove-led "Skywalker", the eight tracks mix summery melodies with soundscapes and studio experimentation. The end result sits neatly between Ride's widescreen shoegaze and GLOK's textured electronics, variously inspired by The Stone Roses, Spacemen 3, The Beatles, The Byrds, The Beta Band, Stereolab, Neu!, Can, John Fahey, The Kinks, The La's, The Who, and the United States Of America. As for the album title, it comes from a particularly dark episode of BoJack Horseman and a poem that scriptwriter Alison Tafel wrote for the penultimate show. The spoiler-free version of the story goes like this: "The poem describes someone committing suicide by jumping to their death and the regret the protagonist experiences when he sees 'the view from halfway down'. Although, of course, it's too late to change what's going to happen. I read this poem as having a message of suicide prevention: if you could see the view from halfway down, you would never go through with anything that would end your life. I've never been suicidal, but I felt really moved by this brilliant poem when I watched the show during Ride's US tour in Autumn 2019 . . . The early stages of lockdown, you could feel the tension in the air, causing what felt like a global panic attack. But, in common with what I've heard from others who can experience anxiety for no reason in their everyday lives, I felt strangely calm in the midst of all of this, seeing things in my life very clearly. Such clarity allowed me to finally compile this record..."

MERIDIAN BROTHERS: Desesperanza LP (SNDW 049LP)
2021 restock. 180 gram LP version, containing six of the nine tracks from the CD and a bonus download offering two extra tracks. Straddling the line between new and old, Meridian Brothers' mischievous blend of Latin rhythms and psychedelic grooves is the creation of Eblis Álvarez, one of the key figures of the experimental music scene in Bogota. Desesperanza is dedicated exclusively to salsa and tropical music, twisting it through a dark and theatrical psychedelic soundscape but never abandoning the traditional aesthetics. As with all of the Meridian Brothers' releases, every instrument on Desesperanza was played and recorded by Eblis himself. A true avant-garde guitar player and composer, Eblis also plays in Mario Galeano's band Frente Cumbiero and was one of the 42 musicians involved in the recording of Ondatrópica (SNDW 045). Meridian Brothers are at the core of a burgeoning music scene with cumbia, salsa and currulao all being explored by a new generation of Colombian musicians.

TRANSIENT VISITOR: TV1 LP (SUBEX 024LP)
Transient Visitor are Alex Cargill and Martin Jensen of The Central Office of Information and The Home Current respectively. Formed in March 2020 when most of Europe was deep in lockdown due to Covid-19, Alex and Martin decided that the music should still flow, thus forming Transient Visitor and setting out on a mission to record a collaborative album together-apart in Kent, UK, and Luxembourg on the continent. TV1 is the first instalment from this process. Eight tracks unlocked and now being released into an uncertain world in the humble hope that it might help bring smiles to ears. TV1 is dedicated to Ray Cargill (1951-2020), Alex's father who sadly fell victim to Covid-19 and passed away earlier in the year. Martin: "... I was personally surprised how fast we actually managed to create something which -- to us at least -- was meaningful and as I was initially preparing for a long haul collab, pinging tracks back and forth, it was amazing to discover that things just came together rather effortlessly. I really love the immediacy and 'simplicity' of the result. I like to believe we've left room for the listener, for them to be able to 'enter' the music and take it in whichever direction they like, based on when they're listening or how they feel when they do. To paraphrase, I like to think we haven't spelled everything out too much but left plenty of space for personal interpretation..." Alex: "... This turned out to be such a liberating process and -- as Martin mentioned -- we churned out 16 tracks in about 2 months. We didn't get bogged down in the process and we just churned out fun, quick riffs and melodies without overthinking things. The way we worked was that one of us would create the basis for a track, email it across and see what the other person could add to it. For most tracks it was that simple -- we loved what the other person added and so hardly any post-editing or tweaking was needed. I think the end results speak for themselves -- the tracks are fun and groovy. We both have deep roots in hip hop, electro and rave culture and I think that this comes across clearly in the music. In terms of the equipment used, it was mostly a digital production although I did use a few analog synths at this end to add some 'dirt' to the proceedings." 180 gram, silver vinyl; includes digital download. Mastered by Andy Miles at StarDelta.

YAT-KHA: We Will Never Die LP (LSCD 021LP)
LP version. We Will Never Die is Yat-Kha's eight studio album. Centered around the huge voice of charismatic singer Albert Kuvezin from the remote Russian republic of Tuva (latitude: London, longitude: Bangladesh), the group's long international career started out during the collapse of the USSR in 1991 with the release of Antropofagia on celebrated writer and art critic Artemy Troitsky's General Records (Moscow). The release of the legendary Yenisei-Punk album recorded for Global Music Centre (Helsinki) in 1994 saw them gain worldwide recognition. Under the management of then bassist Lu Edmonds (3Mustapha3, Mekons, The Damned, PiL, etc.), Yat-Kha signed to Paddy Moloney's Wicklow Records (BMG Classics) and performed at all major music festivals in Europe, North America and the Far East. Kuvezin's ultra-low variant of Tuvan throat singing, the kargyraa or kanzat stayle, still remains the unique feature of Yat-Kha's mixture of traditional music and experimental roots rock and whereas there are many great khoomeiji singers this style is unique to Yat-Kha. Recorded after the 2019 European tour, the album We Will Never Die was recorded in Southern Germany in the studios of German krautrock legends Hans-Joachim Irmler and in some ways follows Kuvezin's Poet and Lighthouses album which itself was recorded on the remote Scottish whiskey island of Jura by British producer Giles Perring, reaching #1 of the World Music Charts in 2010. On this new album, Kuvezin is accompanied by his long-term Tuvan friend and musical accomplice, Sholban Mongush on igil (a bowed horsehair two-string cello) and backing vocals. Due to the usual pandemic and travel bans, some additional tracks were later recorded by Kuvezin in Abakan, Khakassia in spring 2020. Besides original compositions, the album features words gathered from the sayings and incantations of Tuvan shamans -- whose traditions form an unbroken lineage dating back to the neolithic period -- as well as Black Sabbath's "Solitude" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" written by George Harrison, two songs sometimes played as an encore on live shows. The Lollipoppe Shoppe continue their involvement with this extraordinary band who in many ways blazed a trail since the early 1990s many new and interesting emerging East Asian rock music artists and experimenters for example the Mongolian metal-rock band The Hu.

NATURE AND ORGANISATION: Death in a Snow Leopard Winter LP (TRI 586LP)
2017 release; originally released in 1998. Long-awaited release for the very first time on vinyl of the seminal album Death in a Snow Leopard Winter by Nature And Organisation which shows the development of the neo-classical structures that were first explored on the album Beauty Reaps the Blood of Solitude. This beautifully recorded and composed record although actually an unfinished work still demonstrates the melodic strength and compositional force of this extraordinarily unique and underrated album and band. Formed in 1983 by iconic English artist, musician and composer Michael Cashmore, Nature And Organisation utilized a mix of acoustic instruments, surreal sound collage, cut-up super 8mm film and tape loops to create a sound that would later be regarded as influential in the genre of post-industrial music. In the mid-80s Cashmore came into contact with David Tibet (ex-Psychic TV) of the group Current 93, which he later joined in 1990. For the next 20 years Cashmore wrote almost exclusively all of the music for the group including the seminal albums Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre, Sleep Has His House, Soft Black Stars, and Thunder Perfect Mind. Not only is he responsible for influential songs like "A Sadness Song", "Whilst The Night Rejoices Profound And Still", or "The Bloodbells Chime" that are long considered classic of the progressive folk and industrial genre, he moreover has written music for British wave legend Marc Almond (Soft Cell) and avant-garde sensation Anohni (Antony & The Johnsons). An artist renowned for his eclectic work and poignant nature, Cashmore is revered by music lovers as one of Britain's most influential and inspiring composers. Pink, 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve, foil blocked in two colours (gold and red); printed inner sleeve.

2017 release; originally released in 1985 on cassette. The first-time vinyl release of the extremely rare live recording Universal Death Stream by legendary industrial/experimental/dark folk project Nature And Organisation. This record is a document of a 1985 live recoding that sees the band at their most volatile, raw state, using harsh sounds and screaming vocals contrasted by quieter sequences that show the early form of this band that later grew to be so influential. To round up this extraordinary release, the vinyl comes with an unbelievable surprise for fans of this hugely influential band -- a DVD by Nature And Organisation. It consists of an unseen short film made by the band in 1985 with a brand-new soundtrack especially recorded for the film in 2016 (the first new recording by Nature And Organisation in almost 20 years). The original 1985 film has been re-edited by Davidé Pepe in 2016 especially for this release. CASHMORE & SHALTMIRA, MICHAEL: Michael Cashmore & Shaltmira LP (TRI 591LP)
2017 release. Recorded by Michael Cashmore in 2017 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Trisol Music Group GmbH by Alex Storm. This recording shows Cashmore taking a brave new step in his music and reflects a personal transformation within himself. Consisting of two long tracks the music here is hard to describe, it's electronic, experimental, dark but also has a connection to techno music in some way, and really is something truly groundbreaking and unique. VUKOVAR: Monument 2x12"+CD (TRI 630LP)
A dark melancholic gem, somewhere between the heavy atmosphere of Rome's Nera, Coil's Moon's Milk phase, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson's hypnotic film music-like moments and driving post-punk -- yet always bearing the unmistakable hallmark of Michael Cashmore. This release of Vukovar's album Monument sees their first collaboration with iconic English artist, musician and composer Michael Cashmore (Current 93, Nature And Organisation), to turn the three shades of Vukovar into four; a marriage made in purgatory. This album reflects a Wonderland gone sour, fragile music box chimes collide with shards of harsh noise, motorik rhythms brood menacingly beneath lush synthetic textures and angelic voices that contort them into contempt in these incredible recordings. Cashmore is revered by music lovers as one of Britain's most influential and inspiring composers. An artist renowned for his eclectic work and poignant nature of his music, Cashmore has also collaborated with the likes of Nick Cave, Bill Fay, Tony Visconti, and many more. Vukovar formed in 2014 in a crumbling place filler town in the North West of England and set about creating their own world within an otherworld. In their short yet eternal time, they have been relentlessly productive; Monument being the sixth full LP after their highly well-received previous five. Includes CD. RAKOON: Something Precious CD (XRP 2110CD)
Rakoon, a free spirit from the French electro-dub scene, known for his heavy weighted basslines in concert, comes back this year with his new album Something Precious. Since his first hit "Healing Dub" viewed more than ten-million times on YouTube, the producer has pursued his quest for an ever more hybrid and unique sound, combining synths and samples from travels, within pop structures with electronic features. Something Precious is a true synthesis of the eagerness of his first works and the power of his previous album, and confirms an even more electronic turn in the artist's career. It's a bundle of energy carried by bewitching melodies; the travel journal of an enthusiastic musician, strewn with samples collected on the road. "The musical guideline of this album first came one day when I got out of my studio after working on a track, feeling some kind of ecstasy that I hadn't felt for years. Something that I used to feel almost every time I made music back when it wasn't my job, but that had changed afterwards. It was like finding something really precious you thought you had lost forever..." says Rakoon about the genesis of this new album. Whether it be with the intoxicating sample of "Hoi An" brought back from a trip to Vietnam or the galvanizing synths of "Chapters", a hit cut for the dancefloor, Rakoon treats his early fans to new gems true to his carefully refined recipe. But he also doesn't hesitate to venture into more electronic territories, like on the devastating "The Great Big Elephant", with its catchy sample and its synth's nods to trance. Or even to surprise, with the use of vocoder on "Rituals" for instance. Something Precious is the result of a significant sound research and an in-depth work on emotions. Its magnificent cover is signed by the English illustrator Miles Tewson, and it can be listened to like a diary that Rakoon shares with generosity and dedication with those who follow him, on and off the stage. GERMAN & FRANCOIS RABBATH, TULAY: Tulay German & Francois Rabbath LP (ZEHRA 003LP)
Remastered vinyl reissues of the two essential albums by Turkish folk/jazz singer Tülay German, starting with the self-titled release (1980) and followed by Hommage to Nazım Hikmet (1982). Referring heavily on Turkish poets and the tradition of aşıks (singer-poets and wandering bards) these two albums represent unique and modern interpretations of Turkish folk songs unmatched to this day. Back in the '60s, Tülay German shook the Turkish music landscape with several 7" records. Most notably her first 7" record Burçak Tarlası (1964) is now considered the cornerstone of what was to become the Anadolu rock/pop movement and underlines her rebellious nature and sense of justice. But due to increasing repression Tülay German and her lifelong partner and intellectual impetus Erdem Buri decided to leave Turkey a few years later. In fact, an impending prison sentence for Erdem Buri for translating Hegel's Dialectic and Science of Logic led the couple to emigrate to France. In France, Tülay German signed a major contract with Philips resulting in many 7" releases sung in French under her French moniker Toulaϊ. In the long run, Tülay German didn't feel quite comfortable with this major deal and later quit the contract. Later on, she signs to independent world-music label Arion to pursue her actual artistic goals more in line with her origin and temperament. Back to her mother tongue, Tülay German records above mentioned albums for Arion under full artistic freedom, the only full-length in her 20+ years career. Alongside with double-bass virtuoso and turkophil François Rabbath the albums consist of aşık traditionals and intonated poems mainly by Nazım Hikmet. Her passionate voice and the restrained arrangements of François Rabbath turn these centuries old melodies and poems into glowing manifestos for love and justice. The fruitful collaboration of these artists-in-exile adds significantly to the rich heritage of Turkish folk music. The self-titled debut, which was awarded with the prestigious Grand Prix du Disque of Académie Charles Cros in 1981, is now seeing a vinyl reissue after 40 years. Tülay German ended her musical career in 1987 and after the death of Erdem Buri in 1993 she retired from public life completely, leading a quiet life in Paris where she still lives to this day. In 2021 Tülay German was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, Turkey. Personnel: Tülay German - voice; François Rabbath - saz, double bass. 180 gram vinyl; includes insert.

"Other Side of This Life is the final album from American folk music legend Fred Neil, released in 1971 before his long self-imposed retirement from music to focus on dolphin conservation in his home state of Florida. Featuring a side of live recordings of some of his most lasting and well known compositions (including 'The Dolphins' and 'Everybody's Talkin'') as well as a side of studio sessions featuring Les McCann and Gram Parsons, Other Side of This Life may not be Neil's most memorable album but it's still head and shoulders above most other singer-songwriter material of the era." FLIPPER: Public Flipper Limited: Live 1980-1985 2LP (4M 515LP)
2021 restock. 180 gram vinyl, full color gatefold sleeve with Flipper on tour game insert. "Public Flipper Limited was originally released in 1986 as a double LP of live material culled from 1980-1985. The sound quality and playing are both a grimy, distorted mess, which suits the band just fine. Always alternating between endearing and abrasive, Flipper left no room for the middle ground of 'like'. The album title is a shot at John Lydon and his alleged plagiarism of Flipper's artwork for his own PIL and it proves that Flipper was never opposed to alienating its audience, no matter how sanctified. Harsh, art-rock classics from one of SF's most important post-hippy era bands."

BA DA BING!:
HAWTHONN: Earth Mirror LP (BING 170LP)
LP version. "An Earth Mirror is a magical device. Found in German occult literature, it is a clod of earth sandwiched between layers of glass. Gazing into the Earth Mirror is said to reveal the locations of hidden treasures. Magical visions and the revelation of mysteries in the landscape are two prominent features of Earth Mirror, the new album by Layla and Phil Legard alias Hawthonn, and their second for Ba Da Bing. Somewhere between moon musick and ethereal pop, the songs of Earth Mirror reflect the band's transition from studio project to live performers in the wake of 2018's Red Goddess (Of This Men Shall Know Nothing). The themes for the songs on this latest reflect the Legards' experiences, magical and mundane, in the wake of Red Goddess and as the world then headed full-tilt into pandemic. On Earth Mirror, Layla's heavenly voice accompanies a sonic palette encompassing field recordings of ice cracking on an ancient Corpse Road, mysterious hymns sung in disused medieval chapels, spectrally processed horse shrieks, rumbling organ, crystalline electric piano, electronic textures, and modulated jaw harp. No guitars appear on this album. Nor do conventional song-structures: the compositions here organically developed from dreams ('Dream Cairn'), experiments with inducing magical visions ('Odo Galse', 'Vehiel'), ruminations on lunar beings ('Crowned Light', 'Circles Of Light'), and ecological anxiety ('Cat's Cradle'). Their literary influences include English witch Andrew Chumbley, nihilist philosopher Emil Cioran, the Enochian language of John Dee and Edward Kelly, and even Kurt Vonnegut. As true practitioners of niche occultism and sound manipulation, Hawthonn could easily have been an inscrutable project. However, under the careful guidance of the Legards, Earth Mirror feels close and immediate, minimal and expertly atmospheric."

J.R.C.G.: Ajo Sunshine CD (CF 138CD)
"Ajo Sunshine (pronounced 'Ahh-Ho') is heralded by an alarming horn ensemble, stabbing with the dramatic urgency of a killer's theme in a midnight movie. It's a jarring but appropriate entry point for this brilliantly blasted listen, an array of exquisitely sharp edges punctuated by kaleidoscopic respites of throbbing warmth and surprising tenderness. J.R.C.G. (Justin R. Cruz Gallego)'s previous work with Seattle's excellent Dreamdecay may foreground the broad strokes here, but he's pushed things way outward in terms of his sonic palette. Abutting field recordings captured from rodeos off Ajo Way, a stretch of highway that leads one westward out of Tucson Arizona directly into the sun, both acoustic instruments and gleaming walls of synthetic noise are framed in dour and dissonant chord shapes, crackling with overdriven drum mics and seasick waves of distortion. It's homage that plays out like a collage, a dream switching from station to station, a series of dedications broadcast on late night radio. All pin-hole size images from scenes never seen whole, strung together in but one version of complete, all making for a dazzling listen."

2021 repress. "The first act signed to The Neptunes' newly formed Star Trak label was a Virginia based duo known as the Clipse. The first single 'Grindin'' impacted the streets with its bare boned but infectious drum beat in the same way that 'Sucker MC's' did almost 20 years earlier. These brothers - Pusha T and Malice combined with The Neptunes groundbreaking production sent a clear message to the rap world ? 'we are not the same' (as rapped by Malice on his opening verse on 'Cot' Dam'). Clipse brings an authentic Virginia sound into the game and created a movement, with not only their darkly layered raps but The Neptunes as well. Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo were able to combine their cyberpunk production with just the right group to create a street masterpiece. Following in the footsteps of such rap criminologists as Kool G Rap, Nas, Jay-Z, and Mobb Deep, the Clipse offer the Virginia hustler's viewpoint with clever, hard-hitting lyrics that is sprinkled throughout the entire album."

DEAD PREZ: Lets Get Free 2LP (GET 51311LP)
2021 repress. "dead prez may have been slightly ahead of their time during their golden years, but that is definitely meant as a compliment. Sermonizing Black Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and the benefits of a healthy and just lifestyle during the height of the Bad Boy / Roc-AFella era of nihilistic excess in the late '90s, they also signed to a major label (Loud / Columbia) despite leaning much more towards the burgeoning indie aesthetics of the day. But this was a good thing -- using major label muscle to wake up righteous hip-hop fans who might have fallen asleep at the wheel. The group itself -- consisting of MCs stic.man and M-1, who produced or co-produced most of the duo's music -- was formed in Tallahassee, Florida in the early 1990s (M-1 originally hailed from Brooklyn). By later that decade, the duo had started making significant waves, having their music heard on the soundtracks to Soul In The Hole and Slam, as well as appearing on albums by Big Pun and The Beatnuts. By 1998, they released their first official single, the serious, stark 'Police State,' on Loud, appropriately brought to the label by Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian. After building a solid rep over the next two years with fiery live performances, in 2000 they unleashed their debut album, Let's Get Free. The album was a welcome return to provocative and often radically political rhetoric that hearkened back to hip-hop forebears including The Coup, Public Enemy and KRS-One (as well as poetic descendants like the Last Poets and Watts Prophets). Let's Get Free was critically acclaimed and benefited from multiple singles, including the infectious, thick analog drive of 'Hip-Hop' (which became the de facto theme song for 'Chappelle's Show'); 'It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop,' with a remix co-produced by a young Kanye West; 'Mind Sex' (with Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets); and the poignant 'I'm An African.' But the singles weren't the only worthy songs, as just about every cut here has deeper meaning than most full albums by their early 2000s peers. Highlights: the thought-provoking, anti-drug album opener 'Wolves'; 'We Want Freedom' (co-produced by frequent collaborator Hedrush); 'They Schools' and 'Propaganda' (co-produced by Lord Jamar, one of five songs he assisted on). All in all, this is one of the more underrated and possibly Top 5 fully-realized political hip-hop albums of all time. If you don't agree with the previous sentence, give Let's Get Free another listen... you might be surprised at how well it has held up over the years."

TOTAL HELL: Total Hell 12" (GONE 176EP)
"By way of some cosmic miracle, only one Total Hell pops up when the band moniker is searched on Discogs. And that would be the band responsible for the five-song blast of heavy metal sounds at hand. Now active for about two years plus change and exported from the very metal and punk fertile New Orleans, Total Hell is DD Deth (aka Drew Owen -- Sick Thoughts wheelman, Trampoline Team etc.) on drums/vocals, Henry Hell (John Henry of Static Static, Heavy Lids) on bass/vocals, and guitarists Jason 'Panzer' Craft (Persuaders, Tirefire) and Michael Maniac (Michael He-man of Trampoline Team). If self-deprecation is beyond the listener's processing skills, then please know that as self-described purveyors of the 'New Wave of Shitty Heavy Metal', Total Hell's big-boy debut is not 'shitty' in any manner whatsoever. These four recordings ('Desecrate', 'Clones From Hell', 'Violator', and 'Disfigured') are melodic monstrosities that hit with a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling hugeness, while doing so in an economical manner. There will be no mistaking this for Broken Bones screeching out of an iPhone inside the vegan squat. On the flip, this is no Bob Rock joint. DD Deth elaborates: 'Recorded on a Tascam 8-track cassette live at home (aka 'The Parkway') by Michael He-Man and the process was a nightmare. Original tape crapped out on us back in early 2020 so we had to redo the whole thing. Intros and interludes were done last minute by me with the cheapest midi keyboard on the net.' Well, color Goner Records impressed. One might get momentarily lost in the cavernous drums that introduce opener 'Desecrate', but soon the buzzsaw-riff-wall will crush one into a smudge on the bathroom floor. Without rocking some safety goggles and diving headfirst down a terminology rabbit hole, this is punk jumping into the sack with metal and leaving black boots on the bedroom floor rather than white high tops. Xmas came early for fans of Anti-Cimex, Celtic Frost, pre-shit Discharge, Motörhead, Blitz, Midnight, Venom, Broken Bones and... one gets the picture."

POWER SUPPLY: In The Time Of The Sabre-Toothed Tiger LP (GONE 178LP)
"After the demise of the Ooga Boogas in the Before Time, the four band members went their very separate ways. Being in that band was such an intense high-pressure experience, some chillax time was well-deserved. Leon Stackpole aka Stacky recorded under the name Leon, Per Byström joined Voice Imitator, Mikey Young recorded with The Green Child and Richard Stanley played in Drug Sweat. All quite deserving projects, but it was Stackpole's solo outing that garnered the most interest from public and industry alike. The demand for live shows led him to recruit Byström from Ooga Boogas and a guy named Brad into his touring lineup. The trio was red hot, but inevitably the venues they filled required a fuller sound so Stackpole recruited Young as well on second guitar. The grueling touring schedule became too much for family-man Brad, so Stanley jumped in to fill his size 11s and off they went for another lap of regional Victoria. Eventually the question presented itself to this freshly minted foursome: should they continue as Stackpole's backing band or strike out anew with a fresh identity? The answer came in a moniker too electrifying to resist; a name as clever, enigmatic and indeed, as powerful as the band itself: Power Supply. Back in the shed, jams became songs, jokes became lyrics and long afternoons spent together became this record -- listen though, and one will hear life through the lens of Stackpole and the tactile tentacles of his pals. In The Time Of The Sabre-Toothed Tiger contains ten songs that listen so easy, one will barely notice when they're gone."

STARS OF THE LID: Stars of the Lid and Their Refinement of the Decline 3LP (KRANK 100LP)
2021 repress. "This is the first time this monumental album has been available on the vinyl format in five years. Painstakingly recorded, processed and assembled over five years, SOTL once again deliver a massive work filling two compact discs and three vinyl albums, clocking in at over two hours. While most albums of this length would be considered tedious at best, SOTL are arguably the only contemporary composers who can seemingly alter the time-space continuum simply through the playback of their organized sound. They take time itself and stretch, compress and turn it inside out, altering what would otherwise be an arduous test of nerves into an interlude of half awake dreams that ends too soon. In this album, SOTL picks up where The Tired Sounds Of... left off with an emphasis on melodic development, moving their epic soundscapes beyond mere drone and subsequently frustrating all the typical ambient cliches associated with their music. Perhaps the best references for this current work would be found in the score to the film Le Mepris by Georges Delerue, the orchestral works of Zbigniew Preisner, or the 1958 CSO/ Fritz Reiner recording of Hovhaness' Mysterious Mountain, specifically the third movement. But in the final analysis, such comparisons are superfluous at best, as Stars of the Lid have created a musical universe in which they are the sole inhabitant. Simply put, this album is a masterpiece."

SEARCH PARTY, THE: Montgomery Chapel LP (LION 120LP)
2021 repress. "Search Party was the brainchild of (then Reverend) Nicholas Freund. Having left Wisconsin to join a burgeoning West Coast religious scene, Freund made his way to San Francisco in 1968 to lay down this sole effort with some of his students. The result is a spooky trip that's equal parts acid-soaked mind expansion and God. Laced with haunting vocals and dreamlike passages, sinister farfisa, blasts of fuzz guitar, and downer lyrics, Montgomery Chapel is psychedelic music at its most evocative and thanks to its depth and sense of anxiety, most truly spiritual. The ominous nine-minute drifter 'So Many Things Have Got Me Down,' for example, tackles the difficulties of an unfulfilled married life, depression and spiritual apathy, all while riding a stripped down, grooving beat. If you can imagine a lo-fi United States of America/Jefferson Airplane hybrid, you have an idea of how cool this band sounds. Only 600 copies were pressed and issued on the custom Century label; they've become holy grails of collectors. Artists as disparate as Current 93's David Tibet and Sonic Boom have heaped praise on it. We're thrilled to give this lost classic its only authorized reissue. Audio restoration by Anders Peterson. 180-gram LP in old-style tip-on jacket. HOLDEN, RANDY: Population II LP (EZRDR 116LP)
2021 repress; LP version. "'Godzilla just walked into the room. People just stood there with their eyes and mouths wide open.' To hear Randy Holden describe the audience's reaction in 1969 to his solo debut performing with a teeth-rattling phalanx of 16 (sixteen!) 200 watt Sunn amps is about as close as one will get to truly experience the moment heavy metal music morphed into existence. However, at last Riding Easy have unearthed the proper fossil record. Population II, the now legendary, extremely rare album by guitarist/vocalist Holden and drummer/keyboardist Chris Lockheed is considered to be one of the earliest examples of doom metal. Though its original release was a very limited in number and distribution, like all great records, its impact over time has continued to grow. In 1969, Holden, fresh off his tenure with proto-metal pioneers Blue Cheer (appearing on one side of the New! Improved! Blue Cheer album and touring for the better part of a year in the group), aimed for more control over his band. Thus, Randy Holden - Population II was born, the duo naming itself after the astronomical term for a particular star cluster with heavy metals present. 'I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before,' Holden explains. 'I was interested in discordant sounds that could be melodic but gigantically huge. I rented an Opera house for rehearsal, set up with 16 Sunn amps. That's what I was going for, way over the top.' And over the top it is. The six-song album delves into leaden sludge, lumbering doom and epic soaring riffs that sound free from all constraints of the era. It's incredibly heavy, but infused with a melodic, albeit mechanistic, sensibility. Troubles with the album's release bankrupted Holden, who subsequently left music for over two decades. It was bootlegged several times over the years, but until now hasn't seen a proper remaster and has yet to be available on digital platforms. 'The original mastering just destroyed the dynamics of it,' Holden says. 'They flattened it out. Now we got a really nice remaster that should be the closest thing to the original recording.'"

FALL, THE: Slates LP (SV 114LP)
"If The Fall truly is a cult band, then Slates both benefits from and reinforces such shrouded obsessions. In presenting these six particular songs as a 10-inch EP, the inherent and attractive difficulty of The Fall's sound is made physical, framing the urgency of their singles from this period (notably How I Wrote 'Elastic Man' and Lie Dream of a Casino Soul) alongside lengthy rumblings normally restricted to long players. The tumbling and phased 'Middle Mass' begins on an incredible high note, segueing into the snake-charm hypnotism of 'An Older Lover Etc.' 'Slates, Slags, Etc.' is built on stretched VU-inspired riffing, complete with ace feedback bleed that doubtlessly went on long after fade-out. Ultimately, it's the piercing chimes of guitar and marching drum grind of 'Prole Art Threat' that elevates Slates beyond oddity. Truly one of Mark E. Smith's finest, busiest and most enigmatic performances, equally matched by a band at the peak of their powers. LP edition compiles the six tracks from the original EP release, their March 1981 Peel session and an early '80s studio outtake. Liner notes by Brian Turner."

EX, THE: Dignity Of Labour LP (SV 183LP)
"In 1981, The Ex started squatting Villa Zuid, an estate overlooking abandoned Van Gelder paper factory in the village of Wormer, Netherlands. Formerly the home of the factory's manager, the Villa briefly served as the band's base of operations and would inspire one of The Ex's most impactful, enduring albums in their 40+ year history. Originally released in 1983, Dignity Of Labour is 'our idea of improvised industrial punk noise,' states Ex-frontman G.W. Sok, which not only offers a perfect summation of these idiosyncratic sounds, but also of the group's music in the decades to come. During its heyday, Van Gelder employed over 1,000 workers. By 1981, it had gone bankrupt, following the takeover and divestment of a multinational corporation. Having saved the Villa from demolition through squatting, The Ex pored over newspaper articles, interviews and business records to tell the story of the factory and the people whose labor brought it to life -- an unparalleled example of DIY archival action. With new drummer Sabien Witteman bringing polyrhythmic accents and a supporting crew of agitators (credits include piledriver, bus engine, printing press, etc.), The Ex recorded eight tracks in-studio and then played them back in the ruins of the factory while recording the playback -- giving Dignity Of Labour a haunting sense of space that is at once cavernous and decaying. This first-time vinyl reissue (configured as single LP) comes with 24-inch x 18-inch poster and 24-page booklet."
