SUPERSTAR QUAMALLAH: Invisible Man 2LP (BEWITH 157LP) Limited 2024 repress. Holy grail hip-hop alert! Superstar Quamallah's Invisible Man was never released on wax so, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of this astounding record, Be With presents the first ever vinyl edition. A stunning record which gained accolades upon its initial release, such as a prominent feature on Gilles Peterson's renowned Best Of 2009 show, it's one of the most essential jazz rap albums of all time. Cut across double vinyl, it's exceedingly limited, with just 500 pressed for the world. Deep jazz rap on that mellow-melodic tip, Invisible Man is an unforgettable album with nothing but dope beats and dope bars. It supremely captures the essence of a golden age classic without being slavish to the past. Perfect to chill to, Invisible Man is profoundly jazz-oriented and captures with simplicity and sincerity the essence of hip-hop circa 1983-1994. Brooklyn-born, California-based emcee, DJ, and producer Superstar Quamallah was active in the West Coast underground scene throughout the '90s and recorded extensively with such revered names as Defari and Tajai. His parents were some serious artistic heavyweights, too; his father was soul organist Big John Patton, a giant in the jazz world known for his releases on Blue Note whilst his mother was an active designer. However, he remains relatively unknown. Invisible Man, named ostensibly after the classic Ralph Ellison novel, could also refer to how he is viewed by the public at large. With a laidback flow and deep, relaxing presence on the mic, Superstar Quamallah is equal parts Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, and Guru. Invisible Man is refined, soulful, feel-good hip-hop of the old school. Its wise, spiritual and literate sound, combined with the summertime vibes projected by the smooth beats and the nostalgia-inducing samples and vocal scratches, created jazzy boom-bap rap reminiscent of prime De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Gang Starr. This album was mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis, cut by Cicely Balston and pressed at Record Industry. Finally available on the format it should always have been on, it must never be rendered invisible again. Featuring restored artwork. $31.39 EAN: 4251804141963 HIPHOP |

YOU: Electric Day LP (BB 073LP)
2024 restock. LP version on 180 gram vinyl. The Bureau B label reissues You's Electric Day, first released in 1979 on the small German label, Cain. As synthesizers grew more popular from the mid-'70s onwards, an increasing number of groups swapped the classic instruments of a rock band for sequencers and synthesizers. Pioneers (and paragons) of this electronically-created music included, of course, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Manuel Göttsching et al, who represent the "Berliner Schule" (in contrast to the Düsseldorfer Schule which developed around Kraftwerk and company). A hitherto less celebrated, yet outstanding exponent of the Berliner Schule was the Krefeld combo You. Udo Hanten and Albin Meskes teamed up with another iconic figure of electronic music, Harald Grosskopf, to issue two fantastic albums as the 1980s began. Without disowning their Berlin role models, You nevertheless came up with their own hypnotic mix of sequencer patterns, synthesizer melodies, pulsating drums and sporadic acoustic guitar phrases. Now and again they even ventured into experimental territory. Tracing You's path from the idea of founding a band to the release of their first LP, one encounters a host of illustrious characters from the electronic/Krautrock music scene. Peter Baumann, for example, a member of Tangerine Dream for so many years, was the first to hear the material played to him by Hanten and his guitarist Uli Weber at his Paragon Studios in Berlin. They also met Harald Grosskopf here, a member of Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser's "Kosmische Kuriere" and former drummer with Klaus Schulze. Grosskopf was a member of Manuel Göttsching's Ashra band at the time. Which just leaves the sound engineer, the legendary Conny Plank. It was he who suggested that You and Grosskopf get together to set up the Spiegeltraum Studio in Krefeld, with Grosskopf supplying the recording gear and Hanten the musical equipment. Grosskopf completed Synthesist, his most famous work, before You recorded Electric Day halfway through 1979. It now appears with four CD-only bonus tracks on Bureau B. The musicians: Udo Hanten, Albin Meskes, Uli Weber, supported by Harald Grosskopf (using the pseudonym Lhan Gopal at the time).

MAILE + JULIAN DEMARRE, HEIKO: Neostalgia CD (BB 467CD) Heiko Maile and Julian Demarre, both pop musicians and film composers, have been collaborating since the mid-'90s album classic Meanwhile by Camouflage. While Heiko continued pursuing the perfect pop song, they both landed their first feature film score gigs. In recent years while working together on several films, they felt they should create something for themselves -- a love letter to '70s and '80s electronic music. With some esoteric 1970s keyboards from Japan designed for the sound of tomorrow they have now recorded an album for all the days after tomorrow. The result is the genre-bending album Neostalgia, a unique blend of various electronic styles and 1970s Krautrock with pieces featuring intros/outros, flutes, flanger guitars and vocoders, and tracks pushing the six-minute mark. $12.39 EAN: 4015698116144 ELECTRONIC |

REINBOTH, MICHAEL: Let The Spirit/RS6 Avant 12" (CPT 631EP) Michael Reinboth's first ever release under his real name. After early Beanfield productions, circa 20 remixes (some old ones labelled simply Compost Remixes), more than 30 compilations and 30+ years of running Compost, a few 12"s under alter egos, the Compost boss decides to liberate the alias and mystic. "Let The Spirit" is a kinetic cover version of a house classic, released way back in time on Ron Trent's legendary Prescription imprint. It has no samples, everything is self-programmed and produced in team play with Jan Krause (Beanfield). The flipside brings the trippy "RS6 Avant" which comes in two versions. The "Cosmic Version" is an invite to float over the "Landstraße" (or the dancefloor with eyes closed in the late night hours). And as Michael loves to drive fast too, he decided to add the Club Version -- a much more energetic take with which works a treat on peak time dancefloors (and the Autobahn of course). $12.79 UPC: 673794263113 ELECTRONIC |

EVANS, BILL: New Jazz Conceptions LP (DMOO 066LP) Bill Evans' debut album New Jazz Conceptions is easily one of the influential pianist's greatest releases. The recording features Evans as leader of a tight trio with bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Paul Motian, the rhythm section following Evans' intricates shifts of key, scale, and timecode, and allowing Evans enough space for the unaccompanied piano solos that really show what he was capable of, especially on the version of "Waltz For Debby" included here -- a top-notch rendition of the most famous of all his compositions. BAKER, CHET: In New York (Clear Vinyl) LP (DMOO 068LP) His first for Riverside, In New York saw Chet Baker bring the West Coast cool jazz style to new Manhattan surroundings. With the rhythm section of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones keeping things up-tempo and propulsive, pianist Al Haig alternating between fill-in chords and intriguing melodies and saxophonist Johnny Giffin trading lead flourishes with Baker himself, the LP is another winner right through. The swinging bop is full of zest and verve on "Hotel 49" and a one-off rendition of Miles' "Solar," while some contrasting introspective breaks are provided by "Blue Thoughts" and "Polka Dots And Moonbeams." DALE AND HIS DEL-TONES, DICK: Surfers' Choice (Clear Vinyl) LP (DMOO 070LP) Surfers' Choice is a true landmark of surf rock, being the album that established the genre more than any other release. First issued in 1962 and mostly recorded at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach, midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, it has rollicking surf anthems like "Surf Beat," 'Shake 'N Stomp," "Surfing Drums," and "Take It Off," as well as Dale's adaptations of "Night Owl," "Fanny Mae," and a strangely orchestrated take of "Sloop John B." With a soaring guitar that's drenched in reverb at center stage and Dale's gritty vocals varying the action, this is the enduring start of surf rock and a blistering start at that! $15.39 EAN: 8055515235463 ROCK A1. DAVIS, MILES: 'Round About Midnight LP (DMOO 071LP) The first of Miles Davis' LPs for Columbia, 'Round About Midnight is the landmark that broke a new talent-heavy backing band, with Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones as the rhythm section supporting the understated pianist Red Garland, and a then-unknown John Coltrane. An album of uncommon beauty that veers between cool jazz and hard bop, the version of the title track with Miles' muted trumpet is arguably more distinctive than Monk's original, the adaptation of Bird's "Au Leu-Cha" is equally great and there are non-standard renditions of "Basin Street Blues," "All Of You," and "Bye-Bye Blackbird." JAMES, ETTA: At Last! LP (DMOO 073LP) Etta James' first for Chess, 1961's At Last! was a stunning comeback album, with hits "All I Could Do Was Cry," "Trust In Me," and the title track bringing her to both the pop and R&B charts in the USA. The varied approach brought out the best in James, tackling Willie Dixon's "I Just Want To Make Love To You" as competently as her takes of "Stormy Weather" and "A Sunday Kind Of Love," and there are stirring originals co-written by Harvey Fuqua in "It's A Crying Shame," "If I Can't Have You," and "My Heart Cries." PIAF, EDITH: Piaf! LP (DMOO 074LP) One of the most celebrated vocalists of the 20th Century and the best-known French singer of all time, the iconic cabaret and chanson performer Edith Piaf had an incredible life and an equally amazing career. Abandoned by her mother at birth and raised partly in a brothel by her granny, Piaf began performing in her father's acrobatic street troupe as a teen and made her name in occupied Paris. For 1958's Piaf! her torch-song deliveries are aided by the subtle strings of the Orchestra of Robert Chauvigny; if you're an Edith Piaf fan there is plenty to savor here, especially "En Pourtant," "Les Orgues De Barbarie," and "Le Gitan Et La Fille." $15.39 EAN: 8055515235494 JAZZ A1. LEE AND RAN BLAKE, JEANNE: The Newest Sound Around LP (DMOO 075LP) While studying at Bard College, a liberal arts facility in upstate New York, pianist Ran Blake and singer Jeanne Lee began working together as a duo, their astounding debut The Newest Sound Around edging into Third Stream territory. Unjustly overlooked at its time of issue in 1962, the album has loping hazy jazz odes like "Laura," solo ventures for Blake such as "Church On Russell Street," and one-off takes of "Summertime," "Evil Blues," and "Blue Monk." Variety is the spice of life on this intriguer, yet everything is delivered in the duo's own tenor, yielding an intriguing slice of early '60s mood jazz, ripe for rediscovery. $15.39 EAN: 8055515235500 JAZZ A1. MONK & JOHN COLTRANE, THELONIOUS: At Carnegie Hall LP (DMOO 076LP) Unearthed in 2005 by staff at the Library of Congress, At Carnegie Hall is an incredible performance delivered on 29 November 1957 by jazz giants Monk and Coltrane, together with bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik and drummer Shadow Wilson. Far superior to that captured at the Five Spot five months earlier, At Carnegie Hall shows Coltrane finding his own sax sphere as Monk explores the limits of experimental excursions on the keyboard; Monk is in his element on "Crepuscule With Nellie" and Trane shows his adaptability of the complex "Epistrophy." HOLIDAY, BILLIE: Lady Love Cassette (DMOOK 010CS) Though she had been performing professionally since the late 1920s, as a teenager in Harlem, during its Renaissance, the immortal Billie Holiday didn't play a single night on the European continent until 1954. It was in that year that the great journalist and musician Leonard Feather, and a Swedish promoter organized the Jazz Club U.S.A. tour, named after Feather's wildly popular radio program. Featuring Red Norvo, Sonny Clark, and more, the centerpiece of Jazz Club U.S.A. was, undoubtedly, Lady Day. Recorded at various dates across the tour, Lady Love shows Holiday still had it, despite the turmoil, and drug and alcohol abuse, her voice remained strong, a stunning document of one of America's greatest treasures on her first ever tour of Europe. $9.39 UPC: 637913341533 ROCK A1. SIMONE, NINA: Nina's Choice Cassette (DMOOK 025CS) The versatile singer, songwriter, pianist, musical arranger and civil rights activist Nina Simone was one of the most iconic of all jazz performers. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, she was one of eight children in a poor black family. Coolpix's 1963 release, Nina's Choice, was titled in reference to the fact that Simone chose the entire contents, drawing from a range of pop, folk, blues and show tunes, all interpreted and delivered in her uniquely expressive style. $9.39 UPC: 637913014925 JAZZ A1. DAVIS, MILES: Sketches Of Spain Cassette (DMOOK 060CS) Complex, emotive, and straddling several genres, Sketches Of Spain is one of Miles Davis' masterpieces, a landmark of orchestrated jazz. The third of his collaborations with Gil Evans, Sketches was inspired by the classical "Concierto de Aranjuez," which sparked the suite that makes up the LP. Drummers Jimmy Cobb and Elvin Jones and bassist Paul Chambers reconfigured their approaches to blend with the orchestra under Evans' command and Davis uses a muted flugelhorn for the epic opener; his solo on "Saeta" is blinding and the adapted Andalusian folk song "Solea" draws on flamenco. DRUM & LACE: ONDA LP (FAB 130LP) Sofia Degli Alessandri-Hultquist, AKA Drum & Lace, is a Florence-raised, London-based musician and artist. Drum & Lace takes inspiration from the natural world and her music is scattered with field recordings, so while the work is largely electronic there is a grounding and organic nature to every track. 2022's debut album Natura found inspiration in the soil and in rolling hills, while 2023's Frost EP captured the quiet beauty of winter. Her LP ONDA -- her most dance floor-leaning record to date -- is inspired by the ocean, with motifs of shells, sand and sisterhood present throughout. Sofia has shared the stage with artists as disparate, and luminary, as William Basinski, Suzanne Ciani, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, black midi, Sqürl, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, while the stages she's performed on include revered London venues like Café OTO and EartH, Moogfest, Slingshot Festival and National Sawdust's Digital Discovery event in the US and Festa Dell'Opera in Italy. She is also a composer for film with degrees from the prestigious Berklee College of Music and New York University, and her accolades include work with 20th Century Studios, Lionsgate, NBC, AppleTV+ and Amazon Studios. At the same time, she's been releasing music outside her scoring work, using her extensive synth collection to find her voice as an electronic producer whose music recalls the likes of Kelly Lee Owens. Such variety is proof that Drum & Lace is confidently dipping her toes in electronic music's different pools. From an intimate and immersive ambient performance to a summer festival stage, Drum & Lace taps into both with ease. Limited LP on transparent vinyl. $19.39 EAN: 9120008863610 ELECTRONIC A1. Solstice

Tomoyuki Aoki is the founding member and lead guitarist of the legendary Tokyo Psych Monsters Up-Tight. Of all the Japanese psych-rock groups that emerged in the late nineties and early noughties, Up-Tight are the most reverent, the most directly plugged into the source, from their name (Velvet Underground) with knowing referential song titles like "Sweet Sister" to their extended heavy, dark black clad acid fried one chord psych melters -- bands like Fushitsusha, White Heaven, Kousokuya, Shizuka, and the grandaddies of 'em all, the deservedly-legendary, Les Rallizes Denudes. Shitsuren if anything has got an even heavier, dronier edge than the last one. Super fuzzed guitars, sad ballads, grinding distorto epics and numbed, narcotic rhythms. This is one to play at maximum volume so that you can soak up its molten magik, as over two sides of Shitsuren's grueling guitar hypnotics you uncover the darker side of the ensembles personality to find them digging deep to drag the audience with them into the shadows of stoner psyche. If you can picture Okhami No Jikan, Asahito Nanjo, Musica Transonic, and Toho Sara then you're close to the outrageous levels of psychedelic excess captured here, a riotous concoction of ferociously brooding, locked down heavy bearing intensity of fierce/brutal speaker battering in the red levels. $20.39 UPC: 769791986558 ROCK A1. BHAJAN BHOY: Peace Frequencies/Healing Frequencies (The WFMU + WGXC Sessions 2023) LP (FTR 775LP) Ever wondered what music would sound like if it was ripped from the space directly preceding sleep? The tracks within this album are your gateway to discovery. These recordings, which were laid down especially for the USA radio stations WFMU and WGXC, will melt your speakers and your mind. Released on the ever-excellent Feeding Tube Records (USA) and Cardinal Fuzz (UK). Bhajan Bhoy (aka Ajay Saggar) symbolizes boundless creative freedom in all the music he has produced to date. This LP is no exception to that rule -- in fact, this album showcases an even wider spectrum of sounds and ideas than could ever be imagined. From heavy lysergic guitar excursions, to dub inflected guitar pedal pop, to nu-age minimalism, to electronic experimentalism -- all the terms and descriptions in the world don't do justice to the originality that lies within. When USA radio station WFMU asked Ajay to contribute tracks to a session for the show 'Feelings' (co-hosted by Michele and Creamo Coyl), he turned in five tracks that received tremendous feedback from around the world on the station's live chatline when broadcast. In addition, a session for WGXC further showcased the songwriting talent of Ajay. The ensuing three-week tour of the USA cemented Bhajan Bhoy's status as one of the most innovative musicians around. This LP marks another giant leap forward in Bhajan Bhoy's musical development. He's brimming with ideas and the imagination runs wild. This music is for the listeners who want to follow a path of discovery and be mesmerized and blown away by what they hear. Be sure to be one of the listening party. Written, recorded, mixed by Ajay Saggar at Soundation Studio in the summer of 2023. Mastered by Helmut Erler. Sleeve design by Jake Blanchard. $20.39 UPC: 769791986534 ROCK |

ANDERSON, BETH: I Can't Stand It LP (FKR 119LP) Carving an unlikely and elaborate niche in the stoney academic landscape which she once shared with the likes of Phill Niblock, John Cage, and Sorel Hayes, the excitable proto-punk poèmes sonores of the linguistic loose cannon known as Beth Anderson first rolled through New York in the mid-1970s (from Kentucky via San Francisco) like a jumbled tumbleweed of lost Letterism, face paint and threadbare drummy funk to astonish gallery floors, lecture theatres and loft apartment stages. One thousand leagues under the radar of the commercial music industry, with a sense of humor that elevated way above her highbrow peer group, the music of Beth Anderson has successfully evaded the pressing plant for most of her creative career, and not unlike fellow New York gallery actionist Suzanne Ciani, it has taken decades to successfully collect and contextualize these early recordings -- expanding her elusive discography beyond the rare and mysterious solo single entry in the process. In 1980, the 45rpm single "I Can't Stand It" combusted into the consciousness of adventurous participants with its deep rhythmic backbeat (courtesy of future Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr producer Wharton Tiers, member of the new wave band Theoretical Girls), climaxing with two colorful and commanding linguistic tantrums before disappearing in a puff of smoke leaving would-be fans dumbstruck without so much as a label name or distribution contact to explain what they had just heard. For those who have spent the subsequent years on the edge of that same seat, it might come as some comfort knowing that somewhere out there is also a contrasting world of gallery patrons and experimental sound poetry enthusiasts that similarly didn't know that their regular performance poet Beth Anderson even made the ambitious pop record. For the uninitiated, the enigmatic Beth Anderson has straddled both sides of the art/rock fence placed between two equally niche pastures. Hopefully this first-ever vinyl compendium will succeed in joining the dots, loops, yelps, squeaks, beats and repeats! $21.99 EAN: 5060099508141 ROCK |

KAYN, ROLAND: The Ortho-Project 15CD BOX (FR 025-039CD) Returning to the unreleased oeuvre of the master of cybernetic sound Roland Kayn, Frozen Reeds hereby unveils a new high watermark for longform electroacoustic composition, unfolding across 15 CDs in a luxurious gold-stamped boxed set. With Jim O'Rourke applying his signature restorative touch to the audio, and Robert Beatty taking his cryptic cybernetics-inspired artwork several steps beyond the label's previous Kayn box, The Ortho-Project (2007) finally sees a fitting release. In 1970, Roland Kayn began a decades-long period of research, development and creation at the Instituut voor Sonologie in Utrecht. In the mid to late '90s, Kayn retired, relocated to the Dutch countryside, and began to realize new electronic works at Reiger Recording Studio -- his modest home facility. "I finally came to the conclusion," he would later point out, "that I no longer needed studios to construct my own electronic music." The working methods Kayn arrived at individually -- without the room-filling synthesizers, mixing desks and signal-processing equipment of Sonology at his disposal -- saw him turning his own career into a cybernetic process. From the hours of recorded sound amassed in prior decades, he began processing and assembling a mountainous quantity of new music. His works of this period are focused on reabsorbing and recontextualizing his life's work to produce yet another series of utterly alien landscapes. From his retirement until his death in 2011, Kayn was wildly prolific, leaving an archive of dozens of finished electronic pieces. Earlier source material is often resculpted using the technology Kayn had available to hand, while other techniques such as sampling radio broadcasts or the plunderphonic quotation of others' works occasionally intercede. No notes accompany any of this music -- no word of explanation or expression of intent. Only the works and their titles remain, the latter often simply deepening the mystery. Their durations range from around 20 minutes to almost 18 hours. The Ortho-Project, presented here in its entirety, is among the longest. At this scale, Kayn's music is perhaps at its most immersive; the listener senses they are being invited to envelope themselves in a rich environment of diverse timbral physicality rather than a programmatic work. This is simply electronic music as you have never experienced it before.
"The mystery, the grace, the boundless invention -- Kayn's machine music is a vast catalogue of very human wonder." --The Guardian $93.79 EAN: 6419369993214 ELECTRONIC |

FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, THE: Losing The War Inside Our Heads LP (GODREC 072LP) Losing The War Inside Our Heads is the 17th official album by The Flying Luttenbachers. It is a desolate, bracing collection of music showcasing five varied new tracks of intense, composed modernism. The previous release Terror Iridescence (GODREC 069LP, 2022) was an abstract horrorscape of alienated dissonance marking founding member Weasel Walter's transition back to the original base of operations, Chicago. Following four albums with New York based personnel since reviving the Flying Luttenbachers in 2017 after a decade long hiatus, Losing The War is a transitional work like 2003's epic Systems Emerge From Complete Disorder, one of the most complex and ambitious chapters in the entire saga. Largely conceived and executed by Walter solo as a stopgap between phases, the dark, rigorous constructions here are tightly sculpted and scripted examples of the "brutal prog" aesthetic the group pioneered in the early 2000s. From the cathartic, asymmetrical riffing of "The Solution is the Problem," the quasi brutal death metal-influenced jigsaw puzzle "Id Vomit," to the endless corridor of minimalistic, epic doom, "Crawling 1000 Meters Across A Cold Stone Floor Towards The Forbidden," the mood is suffocatingly malevolent and oppressive, crammed full of bizarre twists, coruscating guitar abrasion, and relentless structural momentum. $20.79 UPC: 769791986503 ROCK 01. BOYS' SHORTS: Something To Forget 12" (IDI 019EP) Limited numbered and stamped color vinyl (white) in black outersleeve with sticker. Prepare to be transported into a realm of sonic enchantment with the forthcoming release from Berlin's renowned Iptamenos Discos. Boys' Shorts, the dynamic queer duo hailing from Greece, comprised of Vangelis (formerly of LAGASTA) and London based Tareq, unveil their EP Something To Forget accompanied by captivating remixes from Gabe Gurnsey and Whitesquare. Following their successful New Era EP which was on high rotation on Berlin's RBB Radioeins, and lending their remix skills to Local Suicide on their Eros Anikate album, Boys' Shorts are yet again back on Iptamenos Discos. "Something To Forget," the first single and title track starts with a strong kick and a prominent snare which punches through the mix and becomes a driving force which anchors the track. The bouncy and energetic bassline is contrasted with lyrics which are somewhat melancholic, however they are performed in a way that gives them an underlying sense of optimism. The extremely talented producer Gabe Gurnsey, a regular on Phantasy Sound and member of Factory Floor, puts forward a dancefloor focused remix of "Something To Forget," which ups the tempo and shifts the focus to the bassline, teasing snippets of the vocals initially and only letting them play out in full for a moment after the break. "Flying Away" features washed out synths packed with reverb and dreamy emotion filled vocals that float around your head, and toe the line between happy and sad, never quite landing on either and leaving it up to the listener for interpretation. Roman DJ and producer, Whitesquare is on remix duties for "Flying Away" and throws away all questions of what tone the track will follow with the introduction of a euphoric and nostalgic piano melody in the breakdown, that will bring a smile to everyone's face and a wave of positive energy over any dancefloor. Something To Forget is sure to be a revered release by Boys' Shorts and another exciting addition to the Iptamenos Discos catalogue. $16.79 EAN: 4018939545635 ELECTRONIC |

LEE & KING TUBBY, BUNNY: Brass Rockers CD (JRCD 037CD) 2024 CD reprint. King Tubby and producer Bunny "Striker" Lee are intertwined in the birth of dub music. After discovering a mistake that became a "serious joke," they went on to release the first pressings of this new musical genre named "Dub Music." Tubby's vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny's vast catalog of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard -- the remix/version cuts to an existing vocal tune. Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 28th 1941 and grew up in the High Holborn Street area of downtown Kingston. He studied electronics at Kingston's National Technical College and also did two correspondence courses from the U.S.A. When he had qualified, Tubby began repairing radios and other electrical appliances in a shack in the backyard of his mother's home. His work in the early days included winding transformers and building amplifiers for Kingston's Sound Systems. Tubby built his first Sound System in 1957 playing jazz and rhythm & blues at local weddings and birthday parties. His reputation as a man who knew and understood both electronics and music grew steadily, and as the '60s drew to a close, Tubby purchased his own basic two-track equipment. He installed this alongside his dub-cutting machine, a homemade mixing console, and his impressive collection of jazz albums in the back bedroom of his home at 18 Dromilly Avenue, which he christened his music room. $9.79 EAN: 5060135760489 WORLD |

Aptly titled Roadblocks, this five-track-EP once more underlines his appeal: his-speed house and sprinkles of retro rave meet the melodies of tomorrow. "While My Heart" and "Back To" sound like Strictly Rhythm tracks played by UK Garage DJs. "Drift" and "Fortune" are prime examples of Sam's production powers. last, but not least the title track is the result of a trip to Dekmantel and a nod to the proggy bounce of the '90s. ISHII, KEN: Reference To Difference (30th Anniversary) LP (MMDS 24003LP) The musician and DJ Ken Ishii sits right at the pinnacle of techno's most noteworthy, but although a game changer for the artist personally -- and for Japanese electronic music in general -- his 1994 album Reference to Difference is something of an unsung gem today. Now reissued and remastered, released to mark the 30th anniversary of Musicmine/Sublime Records, and available on vinyl with its original track-list for the first time, this stunning, lesser-known classic is ripe for rediscovery. A futuristic confluence of unplaceable ambient atmospheres, space age techno, IDM and minimalist composition, Reference To Difference unfolds as an effortless series of exercises in pristine synth textures, robust man/machine rhythm and understated melodies. It teleports the listener back to a golden moment in the mid-1990s, when a dedicated generation rose out of Tokyo's storied clubs and took the innovation, energy, and creativity of Japan's unique techno culture to the world. Opened in 1993, Maniac Love was a new nightclub where Manabu Yamazaki aka DJ Yama promoted the Sublime parties, which soon became a crucial hub within the burgeoning Tokyo underground. It was here where Yamazaki rubbed shoulders with peers including Ishii and Susumu Yokota, and the trio's future became intertwined. Through talking with Ishii and Yokota, Yamazaki became emboldened to transform Sublime into a record label. Soon after, Yamazaki partnered with Hideoki Amano, who was on the verge of founding Musicmine, a now respected and longstanding independent Japanese music company. As Yamazaki tells it, Amano helped him turn his dream into a reality: Sublime Records. For Musicmine and Sublime Records' inaugural album releases, Yamazaki and Amano approached both Ishii and Yokota, resulting in the simultaneous drop of Reference To Difference and Acid Mt. Fuji respectively, on June 29th 1994. With the pair of LPs further stamping Japan on the contemporary musical globe, the scene was beginning to boom at home too. Specialist record stores, and club music magazines like Ele-King and Loud spread the word, and in the wake of Maniac Love's impact, new nightclubs like the legendary Liquid Room were opening up, bringing a steady stream of world-famous DJs to the Japanese capital. The new liner notes for this release were written Martyn Pepperell, a well-regarded music journalist who has covered Susumu Yokota for Wax Poetics and Midori Takada for Dazed, amongst numerous other articles. $19.99 EAN: 4582116562895 ELECTRONIC A1. YOKOTA, SUSUMU: Acid Mt. Fuji (30th Anniversary) 3LP (MMDS 24004LP) Triple gatefold heavyweight 180g vinyl. Remastered original LP, including five unreleased tracks, presented for the first time on vinyl. Susumu Yokota's venerated 1994 classic Acid Mt. Fuji is reissued in expanded, deluxe fashion, as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the label that originally presented it. Japan's Musicmine -- specifically it's electronic subsidiary Sublime Records -- released the album on June 29th 1994, simultaneously with Ken Ishii's Reference To Difference, as their inaugural joint offering. Acid Mt. Fuji is an enchanting mix of mystical ambient acid and futurist minimal techno, taking the listeners on a psychedelic pilgrimage, where 303, synths and electronic percussion are scented with reverb, echo and forest recordings. Merging Japanese new age and sparse electronica, the recording is free, organic, and energized -- proffering a unique blend of early '90s western styles and the essence of his home country. Yokota originally planned an ambient record, but Acid Mt. Fuji evolved into a concept work featuring the Roland TB-303, which he recorded live at home alongside a sampler, yielding experimental and innovative results. With references to Japanese folklore, nature and shrines, tracks like "Kinoko" and "Meijijingu" invite the listener to immerse themselves in the album's spiritual depths. Acid Mt. Fuji is a powerful testament to the establishment of rave culture in Japan, which rapidly developed within just two years, from 1992 to 1994. Largely due to praise for the breathtaking originality of the LP, within this burgeoning national techno scene, Yokota rose to prominence as one of its key figures. He then became one of the most renowned artists to emerge from his homeland and enter the global electronic pantheon. He inspired a new wave of Japanese producers and DJs, contributing significantly to the growth of the techno movement in Japan. This triple vinyl deluxe edition includes the original album's eleven tracks alongside five raw and jacking rare gems, available on wax for the first time, which were previously included only in the Japanese 2016 deluxe edition CD. The liner notes are written by DJ/producer Alex From Tokyo, who was a good friend of Yokota, and experienced the '90s Tokyo club scene firsthand as an insider. His compilation Japan Vibrations Vol. 1 captures this golden era, and features music by Prism (Susumu Yokota), Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, Yasuaki Shimizu, Quadra (Hiroshi Watanabe), and more. $33.39 EAN: 4251804181709 ELECTRONIC A1. If phonophobia can be defined as an overall fear of sound -- what better band can you think of than crustcore titans Extreme Noise Terror to deliver such a fear as though kicking listeners down a shoot that leads to a lifetime sentence in Room 101. The album contains the band at their best, which sounds and feels like the worst thing you've ever encountered on earth: bolt-sputtering vocals on "Pray To Be Saved" and "Self-Decay." Grim guitars groan as they gut the intestines from one's malnourished belly for a final meal on "Knee Deep in Shit" and "Moral Bondage." Rhythms that emerge from nowhere like fleets of demonic hailstone with drywall nails in place of the hail on "Third World Genocide." Only a classic band like Extreme Noise Terror can have so much influence, yet by comparison of that influence, such little musical output can sound like being cracked apart and smashed together in equally, exhilaratingly evil measures.

EXTREME NOISE TERROR: A Holocaust In Your Head: The Original Holocaust (Yellow Vinyl) LP (RRS 234CV-LP)
Yellow color vinyl version. The unissued original recording for their debut album Holocaust In Your Head. How many bands can say they had multiple debut albums? For crustcore sound terrorists Extreme Noise Terror, Holocaust In Your Head: The Original Holocaust, first recording version, continues to excuse itself in being reissued for what must be the last time before the last time. It's no wonder why. "We The Helpless" is every bit as hopeless as it sounds -- a blitzkrieg of wails and nightmarish sonics that tighten themselves around the temples until the eyes turn white. "Statement" will always stand on its own two feet as a perfect set opener and Innocence to Ignorance's unhinged atmospheric armageddon as well as "Use Your Mind"'s sample-sprung assault on the senses are possible indications of where the band could've wound up had their line-up not been walking such a shaky tightrope. Rough as hell? Sure. But if you want to know what it feels like to have the signal input of your skull reflect a separation in the grounding circuit of the flesh from the neck down, then carry on screaming.

EXTREME NOISE TERROR: A Holocaust In Your Head (Color Vinyl) LP (RRS 235CV-LP)
Color vinyl version. Away from the grandeur, and although their line-up history is full of potholes -- the key to unlock this classic release by Extreme Noise Terrors, Holocaust in Your Head is the double-edged vocal prongs from ENT founders Phil Vane and Dean Jones and the black-avalanche guitars of Steve Hurley (not forgetting the drum stool occupied by Mick Harris, soon to be of Scorn during the recording of this album, and Doom's Tony "Stick" Dickens). "Statement" is as good as any opening gambit for a band -- a trail of sludge setting fire to itself consuming the raw, political ashtray mantras spewed into its thick, corrosive grip. "Another Nail in the Coffin" suitably devastating the senses as a wrecking-ball swings from its chain into the side of a condemned building, brick by brick. Eaten. Buried.

EXTREME NOISE TERROR/FILTKICK: In It For Life (Red Vinyl) LP (RRS 236CV-LP)
Red color vinyl version. In It For Life was the suitably titled 1989 LP by post-apocalyptic voltage mongrels Extreme Noise Terror and Filthkick, a Birmingham-based hardcore punk group, equally as championed by John Peel as ENT were. "Work For Never" and "Damaging Noise" performed here by the former to the same exhilarating degrees as Mount Vesuvius erupts is an unholy rumble of double-pronged vocal aggression and rampages of feedback that could burst boils not even formed yet. A vampire bullied into submission and burning in the sun. Filthkick follows with "Cime Without A Name," an endless, ominous dirge before being mauled by a savage dog. "Between The Lines" jumping in and out of focus, but never losing any of its ferocity with blistering speed and sandblasting action.

HELLBASTARD: Heading For Internal Darkness (Red Vinyl) 2LP (RRS 239CV-LP)
Red color vinyl version. A manic clash of guitars, bass and drums beating each other's brains out in the same sonic bullring? Check. Despite already (if a little unbeknownst) being considered crust pioneers, by 1988, Hellbastard had firmly inserted themselves, even proudly so, in between a series of bifurcated genre schisms well-protected by those scene's respected guardians. Their official debut, Heading For Internal Darkness no less perfectly exemplifies that schism. With Wendy V Gill's haunted-cosmos monologues injecting some transcendental light into the neck otherwise being mercilessly ripped to pieces by Scruff and Scotty's spaced-out vocal grunts, opener "We Had Evidence" to the equally arresting elevator-shaft-with-a-mind-of-its-own "Death Camp" to "The Pylons" whip up seriously dark whirlwinds into atmospheric dances of rapid energy and relentless spasms of spellcasting drama. SPACEMEN 3: Recurring (Green Vinyl) LP (ORBIT 055LP) 2024 limited restock. Solid green, 180 gram vinyl. Due to continued demand, the fourth and final Spacemen 3 studio album Recurring; the much-anticipated follow-up to their seminal Playing with Fire album, is being repressed. By the time the album was recorded, relations between the band had soured to the extent that the record is essentially in two parts; the first five tracks on side A written and performed by Pete Kember aka Sonic Boom, Spectrum, and E.A.R., and the last five tracks on side B written and performed by Jason Pierce (Spiritualized). The lead track "Big City" recently featured on HBO's hugely successful show Succession, as well as being used on an episode of The Simpsons. The track "I Love You" has also enjoyed success on the screen having been used in a recent episode of Reservation Dogs, a successful US TV drama. The artwork looks as good now as it did over 30 years ago, the solid green vinyl only complimenting the overall design. An essential album for any old or new fans of Spacemen 3. SAKAMOTO & DAVID TOOP, RYUICHI: Garden of Shadows and Light LP (TTTT 007LP) 2024 restock. Garden of Shadows and Light is the first collaboration between Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Toop, presenting the entirety of a concert performed in London in August 2018. With their collective musical experience encompassing collaborative work with figures as diverse as Evan Parker, Akiko Yano, Arto Lindsay and Christian Fennesz, in contexts ranging from pop session work to film scores to sound installation, no one could be sure how Sakamoto and Toop would approach their first concert together as a duo. From the opening moments, in which Sakamoto's delicate inside-piano work is paired with distant scrapes and moans from Toop's prepared lap steel guitar, it became immediately clear that a subtle, at times hushed, form of free improvisation is being practiced here, one in which space, pause and silence often take on heightened importance. The album's title takes inspiration from the aesthetics of Japanese gardening, and the spatial metaphor this suggests is apt, as listeners can imagine themselves wandering through a subtly changing environment, chancing on beautiful details and admiring them before moving on. You are led through a series of discrete moments, each uniquely shaded, whether by highly amplified small percussive sounds, austere electronic tones or the mournful tones of Toop's bass recorder. The course of the music follows a non-teleological drift, in which Sakamoto and Toop seem less concerned with establishing an overarching structure than in allowing each moment the space it needs to develop and breathe. When Sakamoto eventually turns to the piano's keyboard in the performance's second half, the music becomes lushly enveloping, as his jaggedly lyrical lines float against a backdrop of prepared guitar and field recordings. The music takes a radical, unexpected turn when Sakamoto picks up an electric guitar, with both players turning up the volume for a passage of distorted roar and shuddering feedback -- bracing evidence of the unfettered, exploratory approach shared by these two uncategorisable musicians, beautifully documented here. $20.99 EAN: 5060446129753 EXPERIMENTAL A1. COEO: Eternal Waves 12" (TOYT 169EP) COEO are back on Toy Tonics! The German duo has been part of Toy Tonics since day one. Now they celebrate their return to Toy Tonics with an outstanding EP full of timeless, contemporary house music that also marks their tenth contribution to the label after their first release on the imprint ten years ago. Their house vibes have been defining the sound of the Toy Tonics label for many years and still now they regularly play the Toy Tonics events around the world. On this new EP, one more time the boys dive deep into the Italo and piano house world. With great piano chord drops that make everybody scream on the dance floor, with horn and synth melodies that you can sing along after you heard them one time only and with classic house beats that are THE sound of today. The main title "Nostalgia" is inspired by and a tribute to all the intimate and ecstatic moments they were able to share over the years with music lovers on festivals and in clubs around the world. While the piano house theme on the A1 brings you in that festive mood of your last summer festival you have been to with your closest friends, the second track of the EP "Breeze" takes it on a higher energetic level and combines a funky bass guitar with progressive house elements. On the B side, Italo house influenced "Meet me at the cascades" captivates through an hypnotic approach and unfolds dreamy synth pads and arpeggios to take you on an imaginary journey to your favorite retreat, a place you feel safe. The EP features three original tracks and also a remix by COEO friends Stump Valley (Francesco and Aleksei). $11.39 UPC: 880655516916 ELECTRONIC |

VA: Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!! Vol. 1 2LP (VAMPI 284LP) 2024 repress. The historical origins of cumbia in Colombia are nebulous and imprecise. The mythology surrounding it suggests an ancient past when Amerindian, African and European musical sounds were mixed together. The main record companies in Colombia such as Discos Fuentes, Discos Tropical, Sonolux, Zeida-Codiscos, Silver, Ondina, Discos Atlantic, Vergara, and Curro were created between Barranquilla, Medellín, Cartagena, and Bogotá from 1936 to 1954. All of them, without exception, recorded Colombian tropical music that over the years was given different names such as porro, gaita, fandango, paseaito, merecumbé, mapalé, bullerengue or, of course, cumbia. This first volume in the series Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!! comprises 24 Colombian cumbia bangers for the dancefloor from the deep vaults of Discos Fuentes, the most emblematic and best remembered label in the golden age of the genre. This is complemented by a selection of cumbias recorded by the label Discos Tropical, which sold most of its catalog to Discos Fuentes in 1990. Discos Fuentes concentrated on recording cumbias played on the accordion and by orchestras and ensembles. The label produced a prodigious number of albums devoted to cumbias between 1962 and 1979, which served to define ambiguous stereotypes, rooted as much in authenticity and modernity as in demure sensuality and joyful nostalgia. Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!! combines well-known classics and rarities that are difficult to find in their original formats. DEAD MOON: Off the Grid (Softcover) Book (9783955751739) Restocked. Dead Moon were a lo-fi garage/rock n' roll band from Portland, Oregon, active for almost 20 years between 1987 and 2006, during which time the band gained a mythic and legendary iconic status. Off the Grid is a "dizzying oral history" about this most stubborn, idealistic and arguably wildest band in the world -- a saga about love itself and the love of rock and roll, about DIY and about an improbable career. The biography of singer and guitarist Fred Cole (formerly of The Weeds, Lollipop Shoppe, and The Rats before Dead Moon) is like a rollercoaster ride through countless bands and musical styles beginning in the Teenbeat era of the '60s driven by an invisible force and one big love. Dead Moon cultivated their DIY code built around Fred's superstitions and avoidance of conventional music industry pitfalls. They toured around the world, played in live clubs between Oregon, Europe, and New Zealand. They cut their own records and ran their own music store and label -- Tombstone Music. Their story is completely unique in the pantheon of rock music: a group who never sold out, never gave in and built a legacy of art and community in a sustainable way almost unheard of. The book is a tribute to their unique aesthetic, unbelievable twisted path of a story and role as pioneers of the Portland music scene. Off the Grid is a declaration of love to Dead Moon, to music in general and to rock n' roll in particular. The documentation tells the entire Dead Moon saga in the words of the band itself. Close friend, author and editor szim spent three summers (2013-2016) in Fred and Toody Coles's attic sifting through photos, flyers and tour diaries, collecting posters and T-shirts and conducting extensive interviews. This fourth revised and updated edition contains 16 more pages than the third and 36 more pages than the first one. The already extensive photo section now holds even more historical material, posters, flyers as well as an extended and completed discography and gig list. Exclusive to this edition is an interview with Edwin He. Softcover; 336 pages. 9.49x1.06x12.6 inches; 3.59 pounds. $27.99 EAN: 9783955751739 Misc

SUPERPOSITION: II CD (WJCD 072CD) Finnish quartet Superposition returns with their second album, II, on We Jazz Records, led by drummer Olavi Louhivuori, Superposition features Linda Fredriksson and Adele Sauros on saxes and Mikael Saastamoinen on bass. Having won the EMMA prize for the Finnish jazz album of the year with their debut, Superposition takes leaps forward with their remarkably strong new album, taking the quartet's acoustic free jazz-based sound towards a more melodic, flowing direction. Superposition, a sought-after live combo, is first and foremost a solid group that understands the power of developing their music together. Each of the four members bring in compositions for album number two, and they all write in a way that serves the band's overall sound. Olavi Louhivuori, the band's de facto leader, has composed four of the nine tracks, but there is no hierarchy here and the Superposition sound is certainly a shared one. Introspective, moody passages ebb and flow naturally with the fire spirit of the band that snaps, crackles and pops with the best of them. Think of acoustic freedom jazz lineage set in motion by the likes of Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and many more. Already the starting three tracks show you the many shades of the unified band, from the sneaking intensity of the first single "Clouding" via the subdued tension of "Clashes" into the all-out gallop of "Huia." There's something both intimate and anthemic in the sound of Superposition. The band's music has a strong narrative, making II a true aural "page-turner." $11.99 EAN: 4062548093414 JAZZ |

CHERRY, DON: Home Boy, Sister Out 2LP (WWSLP 014LP)
2024 restock; double LP version. Gatefold sleeve; Features a new essay by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation). Don Cherry's downtown Paris funk masterwork Home Boy, Sister Out, produced in 1985 by Ramuntcho Matta and originally released by Barclay in France only, finally gets a worldwide release on Wewantsounds. Featuring French post-punk muse Elli Medeiros, avant-garde poet Brion Gysin, and cult Senegalese drummer Abdoulaye Prosper Niang (Xalam), this is a unique soundbite of Paris in the early '80s at its coolest when funk, jazz, and new wave were mingling with sounds from Africa, Jamaica, and Latin America. Recorded at the legendary Studio Caroline in Paris, a hotbed for the African diaspora in Paris the '80s, and produced by cult French-Chilean musician and producer Ramuntcho Matta (his father is painter Roberto Matta and half-brother is cult New York artist Gordon Matta-Clark), Home Boy, Sister Out is one of Don Cherry's funkiest albums. Coming back from New York where Matta had immersed himself in the downtown scene working with the likes of Peter Gordon, Arto Lindsay, The Talking Heads, Meredith Monk, and Laurie Anderson, he crossed path with the American trumpet player in Paris by chance. It was love at first sight and together they had the idea of an album where Cherry would not only play but also sing. Accompanied by a first class cast of musicians from the Paris scene, they recorded Home Boy, Sister Out in Spring 1985. Very little known outside of France, where it has achieved cult status in some circles, the album embodies the spirit of the "Sono Mondiale", the multi-ethnic sound of '80s Paris, pioneered by Radio Nova and Celluloid Records. Featuring legendary Senegalese drummer, Abdoulaye Prosper Niang (Xalam), Negrito Trasante, Elli Medeiros, Jannick Top, and Don Cherry on various instruments plus vocals, the album is a fascinating mix of Downtown New York funk, jazz, new wave, reggae, and African music. The release also includes a handful of bonus tracks taken from Ramuntcho Matta's vaults including the cult 1983 single "Kick" featuring legendary multi-artist Brion Gysin who's influenced such artists as David Bowie, Keith Haring, John Zorn, Brian Jones, Genesis P-Orridge, among others. A fascinating album. Newly remastered. Includes five bonus tracks.

BERESFORD, STEVE: Dancing The Line LP (WWSLP 097LP) Wewantsounds presents the reissue of Steve Beresford's highly sought-after album Dancing the Line, released in France in 1985 on the French label nato. The album, taking its inspiration from French designer Anne Marie Beretta's fashion, features his Alterations acolyte David Toop plus Alan Hacker and Kazuko Hohki (Frank Chickens) with lyrics by Andrew Brenner. The music mixes sophisticated ambient pop powered by a RX11 drum machine with elements synth funk and experimental music. "Tendance" and "Comfortable Gestures" have become underground classics over the years and this is the first time the album is reissued, in partnership with nato. The reissue includes audio newly remastered by Translab in Paris, original gatefold artwork, and a four-page insert with liner notes by nato's Jean Rochard. British musician, composer and arranger Steve Beresford has been a vital force in the British and international music scene since the early '70s. Starting his recording career in 1973, recording with the Portsmouth Sinfonia alongside Gavin Bryars and Brian Eno, he went on to collaborate with a wide array of leading musicians in the free improvisation field and beyond, including Derek Bailey, John Zorn, Han Bennink, The Slits, Prince Far I, Thurston Moore, and Christian Marclay. In 1985, Rochard introduced Beresford to French fashion designer Anne Marie Beretta and, in Spring of that year, the musician came over to Paris with his friend and collaborator, lyricist Andrew Brenner to spend a few days at Beretta's atelier in order to write songs for an upcoming album themed around the designer's works. Together they came up with several songs inspired by the fashion ideas, the fabrics, the colors used by Beretta and the emotions they conveyed. The recording featured Beresford on piano, voice, Yamaha DX7 keyboard and RX11 drum machine, David Toop on flute and guitar, Alan Hacker on Clarinet and London-based Japanese singer Kazuko Hohki from the group Frank Chickens, which Beresford and Toop had recently produced. The album Dancing the Line was released in France in October 1985. It is a subtle mix of ethereal pop songs, funkier tracks, a beautiful piano ballad, and a couple of free instrumentals. In the last years, the album has been rediscovered by a growing legion of new fans and has become an underground favorite with many DJs and collectors around the world. Dancing the Line was only released in France at the time. $24.79 EAN: 3700604760931 ELECTRONIC |

SUN RA & HIS ASTRO INFINITY ARKESTRA: Strange Strings (Expanded Edition) CD (CMR 008CD)
"Fans of Sun Ra's Space Bop and genre-bending jazz were in for a shock with Strange Strings. Even in the eclectic and sometimes baffling Sun Ra catalog, Strange Strings is an outlier. It's primitive, it's sophisticated, but it's not a gradient of either. It's brutal, yet highly sensitive. Is it music, or just noise? Or noise as music? John Cage could not be reached for comment. For this album, Sun Ra collected an arsenal of exotic string instruments and handed them out to his Arkestra on the precept that 'strings could touch people in a special way.' That the Arkestrans didn't know how to play or tune these instruments was not beside the point -- it was the point. Ra framed it 'a study in ignorance.' The result was primitive, yet sophisticated; brutal, yet highly sensitive. In his essay for this expanded edition of the 1967 Saturn LP, musician-curator David Toop calls Strange Strings 'saturated in mystery.' The original 1967 Saturn LP version of Strange Strings was monophonic, contained three tracks, and suffered distortion in the mastering (perhaps due to the high-decibel studio performance and excessive reverb). Yet some sessions were captured in stereo. A dozen strange-string works have been located, five of which are included on this remastered edition. (The others have been released on other labels; see discography inside gatefold.) No track titles appeared on the original Saturn LP verso, but the three works issued were later identified as 'World's Approaching,' the LP title track, and an inversion of the title, 'Strings Strange.' A belatedly discovered tape box listed the third recording as 'Strange Strange,' a title which has been used in this edition."

SMOG: Red Apple Falls LP (DC 116LP)
2024 repress, originally released in 1997. The sixth Smog album, and the first one produced by Jim O'Rourke. Tracks include the single "Ex-Con" and "Red Apples"," later covered by Cat Power. "Like Wild Love and Knock Knock, Red Apple Falls represents the more elaborate side of Bill Callahan's discography. His outsider/loser image is still perfectly intact, but it is shaped here with a more expansive sonic palette. Everything from French horn and pedal steel to hurdy gurdy is employed on these unassumingly poetic tales of self-loathing. There's a larger cast than usual at work here, and the denser musical texture may be the reason Callahan's lyrical self-deprecation seems more like an artistic device than a desperate cry in the wilderness. The use of more natural, organic imagery in the songs, however, adds an extra level of depth to the subtle, carefully constructed."

LAETITIA SADIER SOURCE ENSEMBLE: Find Me Finding You LP (DC 672LP)
2024 repress. "Find Me Finding You, the new album from the new organization called the Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble, manages to strike new chords while touching familiar keys in the song of life. From its percolating opening beat, Find Me Finding You locates new systems within the sound-universe of Laetitia Sadier. This in itself isn't a surprise -- Laetitia has relentlessly followed her music through different dynamics and into a variety of dimensions over the course of four solo albums since 2010 (not to forget her three albums with Monade and the long era of Stereolab) -- but the nature of the construction here stands distinctly apart from her recent albums. Laetitia was inspired by a mind's-eye envisaging of geometric forms and their possible permutations. As she sought to replicate the shapes in music, this guided the process of assembly for the album. Part of the freshness of Find Me Finding You comes from working and playing within the Source Ensemble and exploring new sound combinations via a set of youthful and evolving musical relationships. Laetitia recognized the energy of the tracks in their initial form, and sought to preserve their vitality by not retaking too many performances -- instead, the rawness in the tracks was retained and refined at the mixing stage, maintaining an edge throughout. A key to Laetitia's music is her use of vocal arrangements. Throughout Finding Me Finding You, the shifting accompaniment creates space to bring this element gloriously forward. Arranged by Laetitia with Joe Watson and Jeff Parker making string charts that were subsequently transposed to vocal parts for several songs, richly arranged choirs of voices provide depth along with the thrilling presence of extra breath in the sound. The designation of Source Collective implies a new togetherness phase; alongside long-time collaborators Emmanuel Mario and Xavi Munoz, keyboard and flutes parts played by David Thayer (Little Tornados) were essential contributions, as well as further keys, synths and electronics from Phil M FU and several intense guitar sequences from Mason le Long. Chris A Cummings (aka Marker Starling, Laetitia's favorite composer) graciously wrote 'Deep Background' for her. The duet with Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor on 'Love Captive' gives voice to an ideological cornerstone of Find Me Finding You. Find Me Finding You combines a rigorous process for music-making with a deeply invested mindset, making captivating music that promises many stimulating spins to come!"

BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY: Best Troubador 2LP (DC 674LP)
2024 repress. "With Best Troubador, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy pays homage to a long-time and forever hero, the late Merle Haggard. A singer who, some 25 years previously, first performed in public by playing a Merle Haggard song, Bonny has often cited Merle's work in performance, on records and in conversation with anyone who was around, even talking to Merle himself for Filter magazine in 2009. Merle's body of work was considered by Bonny for a record such as this for some time, but his passing in April of 2016 almost put a stop to it. The goal was to participate in the handing forward of the songs of a living legend, as Merle had done so many times in his own career. Writing for Juan and Only in 2012, Bonnie put it this way: 'Merle Haggard is a channeler who has paid ample tribute to those that came before him. He has demonstrated explicitly and implicitly his standing on the shoulders of Tommy Duncan/Bob Wills, Jimmie Rodgers, Floyd Tillman, Lefty Frizzell and many others." With Merle gone, some of the impetus of the project was in peril. A plan to make the album in Nashville studios was abandoned. The songs still called to be played again, however -- and so sessions were endeavored at home, capturing feeling, memory and new expression in familiar confines with the full-hearted playing and singing of the Bonafide United Musicians: Van Campbell, Nuala Kennedy, Danny Kiley, Drew Miller, Cheyenne Mize, and Chris Rodahoffer, with special guests Mary Feiock, Emmett Kelly, A.J. Roach and Matt Sweeney. The songs sung on Best Troubador are pulled from all over -- from Haggard's third album in 1967 through to his 47th in 2011 -- but this is no simple hits compilation. Seven of the sixteen songs are from his later period, after his long run at the top of the country charts had ended, but before encroaching mortality could finally cease the singular and indefatigable creativity of Merle Haggard. Best Troubador flips through his song book, landing on pages unmoored from their time and located anew. Moving from 1978 to 1969 to 2003 to 1981 allows the album to circle Haggard's music in a simulation of thought and memory, slipping around from spot to spot as if they were discrete impressions, unknown but knowable yet."

SEGALL, TY: Love Rudiments Cassette (DC 831CS)
Cassette version. "Love Rudiments is a meditation by Ty Segall on his first love: the drums. Known popularly as a singing guitar player, he generally starts the recording of his songs by laying down a drum track. Love Rudiments kicks off with drums and percussion, then adds a few other percussive and production aspects. It travels a great journey in this configuration. However, Love Rudiments wasn't written or performed to present as some kind of solo drums album -- it's just another music album, with vibes (figurative as well as literal), feels, a theme and a through-line. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Ty's made an instrumental album of percussive music that rides the wild surf of a waxing-then-waning love affair -- from the first blinding look, to the eventual recognition, that look back at love's rudiments, viewed from beyond and outside that seemingly infinite sensation. And why not? Drums are a melody instrument too. Ty plays them with precision and sensitivity, delving deep into the textures of timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums, all of them occupying space within the luxe stereo spread of the drumkit. In the process, a psychological space is opened -- a private emotional location where only two can meet. Love Rudiments reembodies the passion and compulsion that drives all of Ty Segall's music in a suite of moments played on orchestral batterie to explore the most delicate passages of human interaction -- playing on the bones of love."

CARTER, DOROTHY: Troubadour LP (DC 908LP)
"Drag City presents the first official reissue of Dorothy Carter's 1976 album debut, her folk-music exegesis, Troubadour. In her lifetime, Dorothy, a self-made traveling musician and folklorist, brought forth masterful evocations on hammered dulcimer and psaltery from a myriad of times and places. Her music was played, produced and sold outside of that era's mainstream music distribution. Troubadour reissue producer Eric Demby can look back to a childhood spent off the grid: the early '70s in rural Maine, and later on, in Boston -- wherever his freewheeling father brought the family, at one point or another, there too was Dorothy, as she lived and breathed, playing her hammered dulcimer. The early '70s found everyone living up on the farm up in rural Maine; it was here that Rutman, Constance, Dorothy and some others formed Central Maine Power Company, a troupe of almost feral improvisers playing on a combination of self-made and found instruments, with live video feedback to boot. In 1976, Dorothy had been playing music for decades, but had yet to record any of it. That year, she went to Cambridge's Studio B with Rutman and friend Steve Baer at the console. Constance and Sally Hilmer accompanied her. The performances captured there were released later that year as Troubadour. In addition to hammered dulcimer and psaltery, Dorothy played the flute and sang. She chose songs from all over: Appalachian folk tunes, old and ancient psalms and hymns, Scottish, Irish, French and Israeli melodies, with a few of her own songs for good measure. They all flow together effortlessly under Dorothy and friends' hands in a syncretic space that we can identify today as a garden of world musics -- a highly energized, alternately meditative and proselytic recital whose vitality has only burgeoned in the decades since it appeared. As it should be: the music of Dorothy Carter is akin to a portal, linking her with the eternal. This edition of Troubadour reproduces the original album package, adding an insert adorned with additional photos of Dorothy and her collection of instruments, as well as notes from Eric Demby exploring the era -- his childhood -- from a vantage point of some 50 years. This reissue is a long-held family dream come true, and it is dedicated in loving memory to Bob Rutman, Constance Demby, David Demby and Dorothy Carter."

AERIAL M: The Peel Sessions LP (DC 912LP)
"For those of you who've mislaid your history goggles, this archival release recalls an ancient time in the world of recorded music. Yes, back in the dinosaur days of the 1990s, a creature known as Aerial M walked the earth, before evolving into Papa M and PAJO and beyond and back. Even then, the music of M had a next-wave vibe, walking upright among the knuckle-draggers (and having drinks in the evening with others of its genetic detachment). It was too much to last very long, of course -- but some things end up lasting forever, don't they? Fuck! So it is today that Drag City, an organization largely set up to bring you the best of all available M recordings, is proud to be there for the release of the only Aerial M session ever recorded for John Peel's BBC Radio One show, as it was originally recorded on March 3, 1998 and broadcast on April 2 of the same year. The studio versions of these songs, which appear on Aerial M's self-titled album and Papa M's Hole of Burning Alms comp, were played by "M" himself (now revealed to be David Pajo!), which makes this album a rare alternative view of the canonical M, played by an actual Aerial M band who, all too briefly, embodied the sound for a year or so before Papa brought a brand-new bag. This session found them fortuitously roadburned from several weeks in the European Theatre. OG-M's signature minimalist long-fuse sizzle is thrillingly intact here; in fact, even more so, as the tunes are jammed out past the studio versions' originally delineated borders, reaching rudely across the table in moments of liveness that the studio-bound project might have decided against when conferring only with the walls. For fans of their epic version of 'Turn Turn Turn,' this is more sweetmeats from that raucous old skull -- but if you've not been down this road before, be prepared: the taste will set you slowly aflame. And then, before you know it, the band is dined and dashed -- just like the band that Aerial M was, all too briefly amok on the earth that was too. Salute!"

MIDWIFE: No Depression In Heaven CD (FLENSER 162CD)
"Midwife's No Depression In Heaven, her fourth studio album, was written primarily in the back of vans while on tour endlessly over the course of the past few years. The record engages with the contemplative spirit of rock 'n' roll from within a body in motion. No Depression In Heaven explores themes of sentimentality, the interplay between dreams, memory, and fantasy, and a familiar subject seen throughout all of Midwife's work: grief. Madeline Johnston takes a look at the tender and transcendent underneath a hard exterior of leather and studs, exposing a different side of the heavy music scene, where Johnston's project has been living and evolving. Recording at home in New Mexico between 2021 and 2023, Johnston aimed to create something that was rough around the edges, returning to a free recording process that was less focused on perfection and more attuned to expressing the spirit that lives inside of the songs. The album features collaborations with Chris Adolf and Michael Stein of American Culture, Ben Schurr and Tim Jordan of Nyxy Nyx, Angel Diaz of Vyva Melinkolya, and Allison Lorenzen. Inspired by ephemeral moments that make up life on tour, the totemization of vehicles, outlaws, and the psyche of America's underbelly, No Depression In Heaven affirms Johnston's existential status as a woman of the highway."

MIDWIFE: No Depression In Heaven LP (FLENSER 162LP)
LP version. 2024 restock, last copies. "Long rumored entry into the Hinge Finger crew from Peder Mannerfelt, following his mind-bending Controlling Body LP a few months back. Having knocked us sideways with his recent output, Peder's HF debut collects four tracks of cross-genre dynamic dynamite. 'Cry To Your Soul' blends some helter-skelter style rave trax with a raw gabba bounce, before 'Clear Eyes, Full Heart' brings in some utterly sick 4x4 bassline tribal flex. Flip side 'Savvy' builds a robotic-eski click to the front while 'The Great Attractor' coats the 12" in some rave slime EVOL style. Truly sick 12" in every sense of the word!" --Bleep, 2016.

Hip hop hits, soft rock radio standards, party classics, grunge masterpieces, R&B singles, glossy club-shakers and rock anthems are all layered and placed together into one nonstop celebration of pop and excess. DENNY, MARTIN: Forbidden Island LP (JPR 114LP)
"Dark lava color vinyl. There's a reason why Martin Denny remains a cultural touchstone -- his records are as earthly as they are from outer space. Forbidden Island was Denny's third record, recorded after a nine-month residency in Hawaii. This era finds Denny just on the cusp of being a household name, a period where his records would shortly become certified Gold. Forbidden Island is a solidification of Denny being the King of the Exotica sound, where his recordings could illuminate just enough darkness across the Tiki Bar to let a few listeners slowly dance the night away. These reissues also include the original iconic album artwork featuring model/actor Sandy Warner (which was often the gateway into these albums before we ever heard the music in these grooves)."

DENNY, MARTIN: The Enchanted Sea LP (JPR 115LP)
"Green color vinyl. Long before Martin Denny started heading into outer space with his Moog work, he was keeping listeners floating slightly above the ground with the sounds of the earth -- and The Enchanted Sea is one of his most grounded and beautiful works. Unlike many of his other exotica records (which are filled with the sounds of the jungle, its wildlife, and the smell of tiki bar smoke) this one has the feeling of a tumbler full of ice, walking barefoot on a sandy beach in the twilight, while breathing in the salt air. There are early glimpses here of where he was starting to head with psychedelic-treated pianos, ethereal female vocals, and abstract orchestration beginning to find their way into the listener's ears. It's an album that seems less comical than some of his earlier work, with an allure more from the heart, without the heartbreak (even though the occasional tinge of wistfulness surrounds it)."

DENNY, MARTIN: Exotic Percussion LP (JPR 116LP)
"Sea glass color vinyl. Now joining the Jackpot Record's ever-expanding collection of Martin Denny re-issues is the hypnotic 'visual sound' of Exotic Percussion, which has not been on vinyl since its original release in 1961. His production on Exotic Percussion is ambitious, adventurous, and fascinatingly futuristic, especially when a tumbler with ice was still the preferred way to let loose. Xylophones and chimes swim from ear to ear; traditional jazz instrumentation collides with such musical oddities as boo bas, shamisens, Manga harp, and Burmese gongs. As always, the choice of compositions on a Martin Denny record is a bizarre yet exciting spin around the globe, but this one is even weirder than usual. From the faster-than-light of 'Cumana' to the luscious groove of 'Moonlight On The Ganges' (made famous by Frank Sinatra and a track that is still being played on a loop at Disneyland's Jungle Cruise attraction), it's a whiplash of a ride. But the stand-out on the record is the combo of 'Misirlou' (which would be made famous a few years later by Dick Dale and even decades later with its appearance in Pulp Fiction) So join the conga line and head out into the street as Martin Denny once again creates a world we yearn to return to and an album we can always revisit."

2024 restock. "Appropriately titled in Franglais, Lift... was recorded at Chemical Sounds in Toronto, with 4 track snippets and field recordings added in Montreal. After months of touring, the band is at the peak of its powers. They've spread an audio net out across the continent, recording the static on the radio, the random airwave proselytizing, and the corporate spokesvoice of the service station that are the companions of the long distance driver. Whether it's rickety piano melody, the gentle foreplay of strings, the roil of guitars and drums, or a reminiscence about sleeping on the beach at Coney Island, Godspeed You Black Emperor work on the smallest and grandest of scales (often simultaneously). Nearly two years after the recording of Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada, the band's studio skills have sharpened, bringing the guitars to a howl and the drums to a rumble. The two CDs work well as discrete units or as one extended work."

DOHERTY, ROLLO: Out My Window CD (LEWIS 1170CD)
"London based singer-songwriter Rollo Doherty releases his debut EP on Lewis Recordings. Frontman for the indie guitar band ISLAND, his solo work is a radical departure from what fans would previously have known him for. As the title suggests, Rollo began this new DIY project from the tranquility of his own home and drew inspiration from the many small, subtle occurrences happening just on the other side of his bedroom window. '90s hip-hop, movie soundtracks, and shoegaze are just a few of several influences explored across this diverse piece of work. Out of My Window features some scratching from the infamous DJ Yoda as well as crossing the pond, landing in the hands of Brooklyn based duo The Still Brothers, who provided new life through their brilliant analogue production and arrangements alongside the expertise of producer Mike Hill (Arlo Parks, ISLAND) at Lemontree Studios, L.A. The circle became complete when by chance the LA mastering legends Becker Mastering (Doja Cat, Tyler The Creator, Harry Styles) happened upon the unreleased music when mixing engineer Mike visited their studio and asked to hear his latest work. The EP's duration serves as a metaphor for a single day, as it spans over approximately the duration of 24 minutes, each representing an hour of the day. Ambient soundscapes are heard in-between each track, all moments captured at corresponding parts of the day on Rollo's handheld microphone which he poises from his window. For fans of Mount Kimbie, Damon Albarn, Beach House, King Krule."

CANNED HEAT: Future Blues LP (MIG 3141LP)
"The history of Canned Heat is also the history of excesses, drug abuse, mental illness and pill addiction, combined with an affinity for internal band funerals. Drummer Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra said in an interview: 'I'm still with Canned Heat after more than 55 years. To be alive at all is already a triumph here.' After all, Fito had been with the band since their second official album Boogie With Canned Heat, which was released on the US label Liberty in 1968. In 1970, Future Blues was released, the first album with the new guitarist Harvey Mandel. With 'So Sad (The World's in a Tangle),' the album contains the band's first environmental protection song. It is about the constant smog over Los Angeles. 'Let's Work Together,' a cover version of Wilbert Harrison's 'Let's Stick Together' from 1962, became a top ten hit for Canned Heat worldwide. The concert recording ''70 Concert: Recorded Live In Europe' followed in the same year. Recorded at various venues during the tour through Europe (including London's Royal Albert Hall), this is the band's first official live album and also the last audio document of Canned Heat with Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson, who died of an overdose of pills in September 1970. With 'Final Vinyl,' Canned Heat recently released their last album; Future Blues and '70 Concert: Recorded Live In Europe are among their essential albums, when the band in its key line-up with Al Wilson, Bob Hite, Fito de la Parra, Harvey Mandel, and Larry Taylor had reached the zenith of their work at the end of the 1960s/beginning of the 1970s. Wilson's death left a gap that could no longer be filled, especially as Larry Taylor and Harvey Mandel had also left Canned Heat shortly beforehand to join John Mayall's USA Union band."

SLUM VILLAGE: F.U.N. LP (NMG 578116LP)
"The latest full-length album from Detroit mainstays Slum Village, F.U.N., has now made its way to vinyl. The 12-track project is their first album in nearly ten years and includes fresh collaborations with Larry June, Cordae, Eric Roberson, Robert Glasper, Karriem Riggins, Abstract Orchestra, Sango, Phat Kat, Daru Jones, Earlly Mac, The Dramatics and more. 2015's critically acclaimed Yes! further cemented T3 and Young RJ's ability to effectively carry on the legacy of the seminal rap group, retaining its essence while evolving its sound with fresh new energy. However, with a sold-out tour in Europe, and the release of the Larry June and The Dramatics-assisted 'Just Like You,' it was revealed that the duo was back in the lab together working on a new Slum Village album. F.U.N. finds Slum Village expanding on their signature certain sound, but still staying close to their hometown roots: Young RJ explains 'We wanted to just try something new, so we focused on making Disco-inspired music,' and T3 notes that the recording process all 'began with collecting old Disco records.' For fans who wonder why the sonic shift, and why the long hiatus between proper albums, T3 says 'Slum is still here. We're still relevant and we're still trying to push the envelope. Sometimes people put too many rules on music, and without sounding cliche, we wanted to just have fun with [this album].'"

LOS YESTERDAYS: Frozen In Time LP (NA 5264LP)
"Los Yesterdays are a Chicano soul band from Los Angeles based around the creative collaboration between Gabriel Rowland and Victor Benavides. They began working together when Rowland -- a drummer by trade, then creaky and exhausted from waking up at dawn to work construction -- decided to channel those struggles into song. He contacted Benavides, a former bandmate of Rowland's deceased brother, to record the soul ballads that Southland Chicanos call 'oldies.' Los Yesterdays filter love-struck R&B crooning through guitar-strumming Mexican balladeering; the result is something that sounds like the Los Angeles of yesterday and today -- the indelible, immovable Los Angeles of cruising Whittier Boulevard, of cold drinks on the porch on blazing summer nights, of watching a blue-orange toxic sunset and wondering if they are thinking about you. Los Angeles changes; Los Angeles stays the same. Los Yesterdays have changed, outgrown their childhood barrios and the bands of their early 20s and their private garage hermitude; Los Yesterdays are Frozen In Time."

ODA: Oda LP (EZRDR 166LP)
"Of the plethora of touted 'private press hard rock monsters' out there, very few live up to the swaggering riff-fury of west coast blasters ODA. Commonly known as the 'Black Album,' the first clobbering platter by the quartet was released on their own tiny Loud Phonograph Records imprint and now commands large sums -- but is actually worth the heavy hype. The band naturally centered around Randy Oda, a multi-talented ax shredder and keyboardist, and the lineup was filled out by his brother Kevin on drum assault, Art Pantoja on lead bellows and rhythm guitar, and galloping bassist Kyle Schneider. ODA was influenced by hard UK rockers like Deep Purple, Zep, Free, and the Who, and they gigged all over the Bay Area, with Randy garnering comparisons to Jeff Beck's molten six-string mastery. This 1971 self-titled LP (aka the 'Black Album') fully displays their blistering talents, but despite some local airplay on KSAN radio, the band packed it in by '73. This would not be the end of the Oda story, as Randy joined CCR's Tom Fogerty in the outfit Ruby afterwards, laying down his licks on two LPs that flirted with the mainstream, while staying true to his highly electric guitar muse. In the 2000s, Randy would start another band with his brother called OPO which means 'to lay a foundation' in Hawaiian, and ODA would reform to play a benefit in 2015 along with other obscure and heady/heavy Bay Area rockers like Savage Resurrection and Country Weather (some live footage of the event shows the band still rocking hard). At last, Riding Easy is legitimately reissuing ODA's first smoking, gargantuan LP with bonus tracks, so crank this one up in the '70s Camaro with the windows open, and some dirt weed joints a-blazin'."

MAIA, TIM: Racional Vol. 2 LP (RRVOL 002LP)
2024 limited restock. When in 1974 the Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia discovered a book called Universo em Desencanto (Universe in Disenchantment) no-one around him would have predicted what would happen next. At that time Maia was one of Brazil's biggest pop stars, and undoubtedly its biggest soul singer. Singles like "Chocolate" and "Não Quero Dinheiro (Só Quero Amar)" had propelled him to the top of the charts. With his group, who happened to be some of the funkiest musicians around, he'd just sealed a deal to make a double album for RCA Victor in Brazil, a sure sign of his lofty ambitions and the regard he was held in the music industry. Then that book came along. Universo em Desencanto is a book of spiritual awakening written by a charismatic leader, Manoel Jacintho Coelho. It's a quasi-religious text that uses pseudo-science and much bluster to seek to awaken its reader to another level of consciousness, telling them what they need to do to reach enlightenment, or to become rationally immunized, to use their parlance. The book that Maia picked up was just the first volume (in total Coelho wrote 1,000 volumes) but it was enough to get him hooked. It seems that at that point in his life what Maia needed was spiritual enlightenment and Rational Culture, which was the cult that formed around Coelho and his teachings, was going to provide that. Maia promptly binned the vocals he'd written for his double album for RCA, and began writing new lyrics influenced by his new vocation. He also gave away many of his possessions, began dressing in white and, for an 18-month spell, ended up directing much of his money towards the cult. On a positive note, he also gave up drugs and reigned in his monstrous appetite, meaning he at least got himself in shape. Some, but not all, of his band members joined him for the trip. With much mythology around this period in Maia's life, we never get to find out exactly what drove Maia to become so obsessed with Rational Culture -- he himself rarely spoke about the Rational years after leaving acrimoniously in 1975 -- the glimpses into Maia's psyche, the various troubles he'd faced in his life and the fact his father died when he was 16/17 offer up some possible reasons. Tim Maia Racional Vols. 1 & 2 is another great title in what is proving to be an indispensable series for any Brazilian music fans out there.

THEOXENIA: (Adventures In) Stasis LP (SAB 111LP)
"Theoxenia is a solo excursion for Dave Shuford, exploratory lifer and member of, among many others, No Neck Blues Band, Rhyton, and D. Charles Speer & The Helix. Two years on from its modest digital debut, (Adventures In) Stasis arrives in its physical form, a codex glinting at a specific recency that draws upon the promontory of an even earlier time. These pieces are built on repetitions: of behavior, brief phrases, reiterated modal forms, periodic routines of the household. In even static positions, dynamic cycles emerge. The heart surges forward in a moment of enthusiasm, with a slight rhythmic variant in the music being the gateway. The sources of these sounds align with those from the excellent Arghiledes album (Thrill Jockey), a release also in thrall to rembetika and dub influences. Buried within the tracks, one can glean a tribute to the Queen of the Beatniks and scattered fragments stolen from a masterpiece of Lemonopoulos. Recurrent synthetic belchings and basic manual repeats, such are the limited choices available at any given moment to the performer. To roll with the lumbering flow or push against, the path of conjoined adherence is most often taken. Blind overdubs reveal monomaniacal insistence on aleatoric overlay, a nod to the Hagerty school of studio practice. A wander into the void is taken. Adventure remains an encounter with risk. Is it a place to journey to? A process in action? In this case, it may simply be a frequency, timbre, or figure that conjures another place or time, situated between recollection and prognostication, imagination and perception. In the end, with the mind and body both cast out unto a vast space, a singular expression remains: here is (Adventures In) Stasis, the first Theoxenia LP."

GILBERT/G. LEWIS, B.C.: 3R4 LP (SV 063LP)
2024 restock. "In 1980, after three relentlessly creative albums, the members of Wire were at an impasse, unsure of how to push themselves any further as a four-piece rock band. While frontman Colin Newman spent the band's hiatus mining Wire's knack for intelligent and contorted pop songs, guitarist Bruce Gilbert and bassist/vocalist Graham Lewis joined forces for a series of experimental projects (Dome, Cupol, etc.) where the primary motivating concept was 'studio as instrument.' 3R4, the duo's only LP under the B.C. Gilbert/G. Lewis moniker and the very second album to be released on 4AD, eschews melody and structure in favor of ambient-noise soundscapes, metallic textures, and tense moods. If the brief 'Barge Calm' tracks appear like sonic exercises, the longer pieces ('3. 4?' and 'R') are true exorcisms, conjuring supernatural found-sounds with the patience and deliberation of (un)holy men. Play this record loud and try not to think that it is the soundtrack to a lost David Lynch film. This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Faust, David Cunningham, and Thomas Leer & Robert Rental's The Bridge."

MCPHEE, JOE: Black Magic Man LP (SV 185LP)
"Black Magic Man is arguably the pivotal Joe McPhee release. It bridged the span between the regional and the international, bypassing the national altogether. Recorded in the same sessions that produced Nation Time, Black Magic Man consists of music not chosen for that LP. Like its much-feted sister, technically it falls under the domain of CjR, Craig Johnson's herculean effort in support of McPhee. An erstwhile painter, Johnson became a self-taught audio engineer, acquiring equipment expressly to document McPhee's music. In December 1970, five years after Johnson and McPhee had met, they recorded two days of activity -- a concert followed by an additional day of recordings -- at Vassar College where McPhee was teaching in the Black Studies department. About half of the material was used to make Nation Time. While they had planned to issue a follow-up, the money wasn't there, so the tapes sat dormant. Fast-forward five years -- Werner X. Uehlinger, a Swiss businessman who worked for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, contacted Johnson while on a trip to the US, and over dinner with McPhee, they discussed putting out some of the unused tracks from the Nation Time sessions. With this casual encounter in 1975, Hat Hut Records was inaugurated. The new label's maiden release was Black Magic Man, dubbed Hat Hut A, the first in what would become Hat Hut's letter series. Along the way, the series would feature seven Joe McPhee records, including the first four in a row." --John Corbett

MCPHEE, JOE: The Willisau Concert LP (SV 186LP)
"Joe McPhee's first international release, Black Magic Man, was issued on the newly formed Hat Hut imprint in 1975. It was a watershed moment for the 35-year-old musician. Based in Poughkeepsie, New York, he was too far away from Manhattan to have participated extensively in the Loft Jazz happenings of the decade. European exposure, however, would give McPhee an alternative circuit, something of an escape route from the trappings of American cultural myopia. In support of the new record for this Swiss label, McPhee invited John Snyder on a European tour in October 1975. Snyder was a synthesizer player with whom McPhee had made the duet LP Pieces Of Light, released a year earlier on CjR. The two musicians developed an extensive repertoire, playing diverse spaces in the Hudson Valley. Geographically close gigs were a plus, since it took extra energy to hoist Snyder's ARP 2600. McPhee and Snyder were invited to play at the Willisau Jazz Festival in Switzerland. If you compare this live record with Pieces Of Light, a studio effort, it's considerably more open. South African drummer Makaya Ntshoko is rolling thunder on the choral 'Voices,' shuffling under Snyder's bubbly beat on 'Bahamian Folksong.' It is quite a special combination, enough so that Hat Hut chose to release it as their next LP, Hat Hut B in their alphabetical series. The Willisau Concert represents the sound of Joe McPhee opening up, opening out, expanding his field of operations to include new figures, fresh experiences, new continents of sound." --John Corbett

MCPHEE, JOE: Tenor LP (SV 187LP)
"There are lots of outstanding Joe McPhee LPs. Nation Time being chief among them, but there's also Pieces Of Light, Oleo, and Topology. The Poughkeepsie, New York-based multi-instrumentalist, by now an international star of free music, has amassed a daunting discography, no doubt. If you want to peer deeply into the soul of Joe McPhee, however, there's no way around it, you need to spend some quality time with Tenor. Tenor is McPhee's first solo record. He did not set out to make it. It was an afterthought, quite literally, born of a gathering of friends at the Swiss farmhouse of cellist Michael Overhage. A beautiful meal, some drinks, warm conversation, and, why not, an impromptu recital. Hat Hut producer Werner X. Uehlinger was there and a year later issued it as McPhee's third LP for the label (Hat Hut C in their famed letter series). The existential blues 'Knox' sets the stage, indicating that this will not just be a toss-off postprandial singalong. 'Good-Bye Tom B.' carries on with aching melancholy, through burred notes and hushed harmonics. The relatively jaunty 'Sweet Dragon' is also emotionally loaded with Ayler-esque vibrato, slurs, wipes, and blasts of tone. The side-long title track comes without a theme, as a kind of pure investigation of the horn, its potential, its limits, its expressive capacity. There have been few solo sessions as comprehensive and devastating as this spontaneous after-dinner diversion in rural Switzerland in 1976. We're very lucky someone pressed record." --John Corbett
