HAZAN, SHAY: Wusul LP (BTR 088LP)
Acclaimed Tel Aviv bassist, band leader, composer and producer Shay Hazan radiates with musical diversity on Wusul, his second solo album on Batov Records. This groundbreaking musical odyssey artfully melds the enchanting sounds of Gnawa music, spiritual jazz, hip hop grooves, and electronic production, with a rich tapestry of Middle Eastern and African influences. The album's enigmatic title, "Wusul" (Arabic for "arrival"), celebrates the expected birth of Hazan's first born child, expected to arrive around the same time as this album. Fitting, given that the latter is the result of a transformative phase in Hazan's career, with many of the album's songs evolving and taking shape during live performances. Most notably, a majority of the musicians featured on Wusul are integral members of Hazan's live band, bringing a synergy and connection to the music that is palpable. Shay Hazan's creative process reveals a cross-cultural narrative influenced by his extensive travels, from Central America to Japan, where he encountered the rich tradition of Gnawa musicians in Tel Aviv. Wusul is an introspective journey through the intricate tapestry of musical influences that have shaped Shay Hazan's unique sound. While Western and Mizrahi pop have left their marks on the record, they serve as threads in a larger, more intricate musical fabric. Hazan's profound exploration transcends traditional boundaries, weaving together a rich sonic tapestry that defies easy categorization.

MOLINARI, PETE: Wondrous Afternoon LP (BFR 111LP)
Pete Molinari is a singer-songwriter from the Medway Delta. He was born into a large Maltese/Italian/Egyptian family in Chatham, Kent, where he was discovered by Billy Childish. He's got five critically-acclaimed albums' worth of timeless folk, blues, rock and alt- country songs to his credit, plus a bunch more EPs. He's often described as a songwriter's songwriter. Bruce Springsteen once publicly proffered: "Pete Molinari -- if you don't know anything about him, he's great!" Rome has a secret heartbeat, an underground and urgent pulsation whose memory is preserved within the walls of old recording studios, in the tales of veterans, and most of all in the grooves of the soundtracks of Cinecittà. Music that has always flirted with poetry. Pete Molinari is a poet, and that's why his words perfectly blend with this pulsation. That's why producer Luca Sapio chose to record Wondrous Afternoon among his Blind Faith Recordings and Maestro Piero Umiliani's Sound Workshop. The result is an album with a strong cinematic impact. The lesson of Motown applied to the sound of Rome. Backed by Luca's crack band better known as the Italian Royal Family, Pete Molinari sings with great expressiveness and soul, embedding his words like precious stones, exposing them in all their fragility and strength to the listener. Black vinyl pressing. 500 copies only.

UMILIANI, PIERO: To-Day's Sound 2LP (BFRLRS 001LP)
The sound of today. A very strong statement. Yet, fifty years later, it remains undisputed. To-Day's Sound is Piero Umiliani's manifesto, his will to demonstrate to the world that he always has his finger on the pulsating vein of the world, ready to embrace the heartbeat of the future. In the summer of 1973, Piero Umiliani, in his futuristic recording studio in Rome, much like Miles Davis for his Bitches Brew, gathered an extraordinary collective of musicians, both old and new guard to measure themselves against some of his compositions. Besides strongly emphasizing the backbeat, what stands out the most is the timbre provided by his "electronic instruments," as he liked to call them. Minimoog, Arp 2600, Fender Rhodes, EMS VCS3, Clavinet, Lowrey organ, Space Echo, self-built envelope filters -- machines impossible to see all together in an Italian recording studio at the time and made available to the musicians. The line-up is stellar; under the name Sound Workshoppers, the Wrecking Crew all Amatriciana is hidden, an impossible mix where Marc 4, Gres, and Perigeo are blended, along with a brass section of veterans and pioneers of Italian jazz, all members of the RAI Symphonic Rhythm Orchestra. Comparing the recordings from the original scores, one can also understand the space left by Piero Umiliani for his musicians. They are free to move, to contribute solutions, to enrich the maestro's music. The perfectly preserved original masters, once transferred at the maximum possible sampling frequency, allowed for the recovery of many lost frequencies, restoring brilliance and the remarkable low end expertly captured in recording by engineer Claudio Budassi. To-Day's Sound was extremely difficult to control and fully render with the mastering technology of that time. Pressing of 500 copies worldwide. Includes poster.

DON MELODY CLUB: Zonder Pardon LP (BJR 087LP)
Bongo Joe presents the release of Zonder Pardon, new album of Amsterdam based superstar Don Melody Club. Crazy covers, amazing composition driven by his iconic drum machine groove, this album is sweet candy for music lovers. Sung in his native Dutch (as are all his songs), "Tederheid" is a celebration of the beauty and power of mutual affection. With its uptempo drum machine rhythms, pulsating basslines, and funky melodies, the synths and vocals echo the work of Talking Heads and Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music), but the result is unmistakably Don Melody Club. The wonky "Koud Kwartier" evokes memories of the Nederwave sound of Doe Maar, a Dutch pop band that combined punk, ska, and reggae influences, first formed in 1978. Whilst many of his Dutch peers bypass Holland as a place for enlightenment, choosing to pivot and look far and wide for inspiration, Madjid felt drawn to the literary and musical tradition of the flatlands, following in the footsteps of both classic and lesser known Dutch troubadours such as Ramses Shaffy and Ronald Langestraat.

SAN LUCAS BAND: Music of Guatemala LP (BJR 094LP)
LP version. First reissue of these cult 1974 recordings of a Mayan brass band playing funeral dirges and popular songs in its distinctive extended harmonic and rhythmic style. The members of the San Lucas Band lived in the mountain village of San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala, playing local events of both religious and social nature. The pride of their town since 1922, the band represented a fast-disappearing musical tradition when these recordings were originally released in 1975. Their unique sound derived from an unusual combination of instruments, a repertoire including pieces dating from more than fifty years before the recordings were made to more recent ones, and above all from the highland Maya style of their playing, which is characterized by a preference for freer rhythmic structures and a wider variety of pitches than Western scales allow. One of Jon Hassell and Charlie Haden's favorite records, it was nominated for a Grammy Award upon first release and has remained much beloved by a small community of enthusiasts for decades. A profound and rewarding musical experience for all adventurous listeners, notably fans of Albert Ayler, microtonal and raw cosmic music.

VA: Merengue Tipico: Nueva Generacion! LP (BJR 098LP)
LP version. Merengue Típico: Nueva Generación! delves into the heart of Dominican merengue, a genre whose significance often eludes the spotlight. Bongo Joe's venture into unexplored terrain takes the listner to the Caribbean, specifically the Dominican Republic, shedding light on its musical tapestry. Curated by Xavier Daive, aka Funky Bompa, the compilation unveils rare '60s and '70s gems, providing a glimpse into a transformative period following the fall of the Trujillo regime. With over 20 years in the Dominican Republic, Xavier Daive meticulously sources original 45s, offering a snapshot of merengue's evolution during a creatively charged era post-Trujillo. The genre's roots, dating back to the 19th-century Dominican Republic, predate salsa, establishing its unique identity with the introduction of accordions via German trade ships. The genre's classic típico configuration emerged in the mid-'60s, leaving a lasting impact on its evolution. Focused on the explosive '60s and '70s merengue típico scene, influenced by genre pioneers like "Tatico" Henríquez and Trio Reynoso, the compilation showcases technical finesse and high-speed rhythms. Tracks like Rafaelito Román's "Que Mala Suerte" embody the genre's infectious energy. Aristides Ramírez's "Los Lanbones" adds a touch of humor, cautioning against pub freeloaders. Merengue Típico: Nueva Generación transcends the realms of a typical reissue; it's an immersive journey into the roots of Dominican merengue, expanding its narrative beyond borders to enrich the global musical landscape. This compilation goes beyond individual tracks, providing a historical and cultural context, enriching the listener's understanding of the genre's evolution in the Dominican Republic during a crucial period. Designed for both connoisseurs and wild dancefloors, this compilation is not only a historical and cultural exploration but also a treasure trove for DJs seeking to infuse their sets with the vibrant rhythms of merengue típico. Also featuring Trio Rosario, Fefita La Grande, Bilo Y Sus Típicos, Negrito Figueroa, Trio Royecell, and Victor Suriel Y Trio Rio Verde.

TELESCOPES, THE: Experimental Health CD (CSR 303CD)
The musical process for The Telescopes' 14th album, Experimental Health, not only kept to a specific set of instruments but also a substantial amount of crushing and sound degradation was done to the tracks to elicit a certain kind of resolution. The result is an album radiating a dark and abrasive, yet ethereal energy. Created entirely independently by Stephen Lawrie in a remote cottage in West Yorkshire between January to May 2022, the record was made with broken toys and cheap synths -- mostly Pocket Operators and miniature synths, with no guitars present. The complexity of sound rests within the simplicity of the composition and musical arrangements. The bonus remixes are two divergent interpretations by Black Market Karma and Mosaic Runes, both artists deploying their own respective skill sets and aura. The former with unfurling guitars and live drums, spreading a magnetic warmth and charm. The latter returning to the cryptic spectres haunting the record, drawing out the hidden spirit of broken equipment and infusing the tracks with their signature fractured ice. CD in a matt digipak with art by Stephen Lawrie.

KARPACHEV, OLEG: Sputnik OST CD (CSR 308CD)
Released for the first time on any format, Cold Spring Records presents the soundtrack to the 2020 sci-fi horror film Sputnik (directed by Egor Abramenko). The bleak and hauntingly atmospheric film is accompanied by an impressively heavy soundtrack from Oleg Karpachev, who uses bombastic percussion, stirring strings, and otherworldly synths to convey the horror unfolding on screen. Set during Cold War Soviet Russia, the ominous film starring Oksana Akinshina, Fedor Bondarchuk, and Pyotr Fyodorov Jr follows the story of a cosmonaut returning from space with a mysterious extraterrestrial organism; essential viewing for those with a penchant for Alien-style body horror. Immense orchestral dissonance with an industrial edge. File next to Steven Price, Hans Zimmer, Ben Frost, In Slaughter Natives.

LULL: Journey Through Underworlds CD (CSR 329CD)
The classic, genre-defining 1993 album from Lull -- the pioneering, isolationist dark ambient project of Mick Harris of Scorn, Fret, ex-Napalm Death -- is a dark journey through the Stygian netherworlds of Hell. The listener is left with the impression of a final escape into reality; a return upon waking, with only wispy trace memories and the heavy rush of blood-pumping fear as a keepsake. With this album, the listener is plunged back into a dark pit of noise -- all escape barred, all hope dashed. The nightmare continues, the journey through underworlds descends deeper. These are soundtracks for nightmares. Despite there being just three tracks on the album, it lasts just shy of 75 minutes. Originally released on Sentrax (the label of the late John Everall/Tactile), the CD suffered the "disc rot" fate of many PDO pressings from 1988-1993, rendering most of that initial run unplayable.

MERZBOW: Cafe OTO 2CD (CSR 331CD)
A documentation of prolific Japanese noise master Merzbow's double show at London's Cafe OTO in October 2016. Rhythm-driven and rammed with highly sculpted frequencies, Akita's sound is entirely remorseless. Furious squalls and delicate sine-warps post this one on the more psychedelic end of Akita's output. Truly relentless, it is still hard to believe he created "Untitled Knife I" on a casual Saturday afternoon. Be careful with that volume. SONOLOGYST: Shortwave Spectrum 2CD (CSR 332CD)
The new Sonologyst "sonic documentary" delves into the secretive realm of shortwave transmissions; a chronicle of clandestine shortwave transmissions culled from a span of nearly four decades (1982-2021). These mysterious transmissions -- repetitive voices, signals, sound pulses, short pieces of music -- were collated and edited to compose the tracks of the main album. Immersed in an isolating fog of dark ambient, deep drone music and cinematic sound art, it provides an auditory exploration of the ongoing Cold War. Originating from covert radio stations engaged in military and espionage endeavors, the tracks unveil a hidden sonic landscape of strategic communication. The second disc, in its extensive presentation, provides a deeper immersion into these enigmatic broadcasts. Each recording remains unaltered, accompanied only by a ghostly drone. It offers an unfiltered glimpse into the world of clandestine communication, where words are transmitted beneath the radar and in the shadowy confines of the electromagnetic spectrum. Double CD in a matt-finish gatefold ecopak with graphic design by Abby Helasdottir.

CORRUPTED: Felicific Algorithm/Mushikeras CD (CSR 333CD)
Corrupted is a mysterious Japanese doom metal band, formed in 1994. Immensely downtuned guitar and crushingly slow bass are shrouded under deep layers of feedback. They are rightly hailed as one of the heaviest and darkest doom metal bands of all time. This is not a simple reissue of the 2018 multi-speed, vinyl-only release Felicific Algorithim (CSR 240LP). Though the first two tracks were created using the same field recordings/source material captured in Amagasaki, Osaka, and Fukushima, the tracks have been carefully reworked into a much darker sound. The new track titles "Felicific Algiorithm" and "Felicific Aligorithm" reflect this; like a mind virus appearing the same at first glance. The 27-minute track "Mushikeras" was recorded 2022-23 as a four-piece line-up of Kaz Mike (howling guitar and bass), Rie Lambdoll (vocal and bass), Mark Y. (guitar and bass), and Chew (drum and high carbon steel). A self-released digital-only track in autumn '23, this is the first physical manifestation of this doom metal behemoth, full of loud sludge, funeral dirge, haunting whispers/howling harsh vocals, and atmospheric build-ups. Six-panel flood-printed digipak with striking photography by Rie Lambdoll, Mark Y, Chew, and collage by Hyng Hoian.

WILLIAMS & HAMID DRAKE, MARS: I know You Are But What Am I? (Mars Archive #1) CD (CVSD 105CD)
At the tail end of 1996, saxophonist Mars Williams and drummer Hamid Drake took the tall corner stage at Chicago's Empty Bottle for two sets of duets. The rock club had just started a weekly Jazz & Improvised Music Series, curated by Ken Vandemark and John Corbett, which would run for nearly a decade. This rare pairing brought together two pivotal figures in the city's creative music scene, both of whom had extensive experience in diverse areas of music, from the free jazz focus of this intimate encounter to Mars's stints in rock with the Waitresses and the Psychedelic Furs and Hamid's work in Mandingo Griot Society, playing in reggae house bands, and lending rhythms to hits by Herbie Hancock. As eclectic as these inputs were, in the deep souls of Williams and Drake they added to the players' burgeoning inventive resources, rather than urging the players to pastichery. In the venerable dialogical lineage of saxophone and drum kit, these two contemporary ninjas indeed invented their own approach, very different, for instance, from other such duo settings for Drake, like those with Fred Anderson, Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, or Ken Vandermark. Here, the fiery reed-work of Williams lends the concert a special urgency and punch, Drake's funk trap imbued with G-force, his cymbals ringing with nuance, his toms speaking like a whole West African drum choir. Williams responds to this positive energy with one of his most commanding performances, starting with his composition "The Worm" (written for Dennis Rodman of the Bulls), and continuing through a series of phenomenal improvisations. Released by CvsD as part of a series of archival Mars Williams CDs, hand selected by Williams shortly before his untimely death in 2023, I Know You Are But What Am I? goes on the record proclaiming the lasting power of Mars Williams, especially in the company of a master like Hamid Drake.

WILLIAMS, DARIN GRAY & CHRIS CORSANO, MARS: Elastic (Mars Archive #3) CD (CVSD 107CD)
When Mars Williams dove into his vault to excavate several recordings for a Mars Archive series on Corbett vs. Dempsey, he immediately landed on a concert date from a decade earlier. The event, recorded at Chicago's Elastic Arts Foundation in 2012, featured a trio with Williams on reed instruments, Darin Gray on bass, and Chris Corsano on drums. This configuration had already been highly enough estimated by Williams that he'd posted one set on Bandcamp, but he saved the other set for future release, and selected it to be the third CD in CvsD's archival suite. Gray is of course well known to creative music insiders for his work with Jim O'Rourke and Akira Sakata, and as half of On Fillmore (with Glenn Kotche, of Wilco fame); he's a massively resourceful player with keen ears. Corsano is one of the hardest working percussionists in improvised music who has played with everyone under the sun, among them Joe McPhee and Okkyung Lee. In this freely improvised context, the threesome works almost as a single organism, spinning sounds that develop organically and patiently. Dave Zuchowski documented the date in a gorgeous recording. This is creative music at an exceptionally high level, with no gimmicks or compromises. Taken together with the other episodes in the Mars Archive series, it helps paint a full some picture of the restless creativity that was embodied in Mars Williams.

VAN HOEN, MARK: Plan For A Miracle LP (EDDA 064LP)
"I like to work with a variety of instruments and set ups," says Mark Van Hoen, sometimes known as Locust or Autocreation but here working under his own name on the excellent Plan For A Miracle, his first physical release of solo music since 2018's Invisible Threads (TO 104CD). "Sometimes it's literally in my studio, with all the hardware electronics available. Sometimes the laptop, using software instruments. Some of the tracks on this record were recorded in the desert (Joshua Tree) using a four-track tape machine and small modular synthesizer set up. Each track was recorded in different location using different instruments, which accounts for the distinction between each piece. It's also about my own reaction to my environment, and what's going on in my life at the time." Mark Van Hoen has worked on a number of collaborations, including with Nick Holton and Neil Halstead of Slowdive, under the moniker of Black Hearted Brother -- their Stars Are Our Home was released in 2013. Each track on Plan For A Miracle does indeed sound like a world unto itself, a mini-environment, a weather condition, an ecosystem created for the moment. It's a collection of tracks recorded over the past few years, released on Bandcamp -- despite his apparent absence, Van Hoen works constantly. Although the album is non-thematic, non-specific in its atmospheres, sound paintings, elegant structures it most certainly stands as a magnificent monument to Osho's memory. Album mastered for vinyl by Stefan Betke at Scape. Artwork by Ian Anderson (Designers Republic).

SKULLFLOWER: IIIrd Gatekeeper 2LP (DPROM 131LP)
Double vinyl reissue of Skullflower's epochal IIIrd Gatekeeper album -- the first time that this album has been available on vinyl for 30 years. In addition to the original LP this definitive and expanded edition includes extra and unreleased tracks taken from the recording sessions. For the first time all the tracks recorded by the band during this period can be heard together giving fans unprecedented access to material previously only available in the bands' archives. Recorded in London in 1991 and released in 1992 on Justin "Godflesh" Broadrick's HeadDirt label in 1992, IIIrd Gatekeeper established a worldwide reputation and following for Skullflower and convinced many who heard it that they had encountered nothing less than the best band on the planet. Arriving at the height of the "grunge" and the expansion of underground guitar "rock" into corporate America, IIIrd Gatekeeper had its roots deep in the UK noise and power-electronics scene. Guitarist Matthew Bower and bassist Anthony Di Franco were both graduates of the Broken Flag school of British noise making with their respective projects Pure, Total and JFK. IIIrd Gatekeeper was Skullflower's third album and was the first of the band's albums to feature a consistent line-up throughout its production. Part of a (very) loose but somewhat like-minded kaleidoscope where one can trace something like a Portuguese hauntology, centered around labels like Russian Library or Prisma Sonora Records, Alexandre Centeio joins Discrepant with the surefire release of Panorama. A multi-instrumentalist and sound artist based in Porto, Centeio -- who is also part of Stellarays and The Murmurous Playground -- delivers his second album under his own name after 2022's Movanta. Signaling a departure from the intimate synth driven beautifully soothing landscapes of Movanta while still working within a realm where space and memory play a significant part of both escapism and connection, Panorama opens itself up to a "surrealistic soundscape filled with real and dreamt sound," perfectly illustrated by Ruca Bourbon's artwork. A sonic fiction conjured from a variety of sources -- hand drums, disembodied voices, scraps of unknown realities, skewed loops, oneiric collages, flutes, spectral synths -- that float freely between disruption and continuity but within their own internal logic. A very particular and hallucinatory one at that. Collapsing notions of time and geography in an aural canvas totally aligned with Discrepant's ethos. Panorama indeed.

VA: Sky Girl 2LP (EFFICIENT 002LP)
2024 restock. Sky Girl is a mysteriously unshakeable companion, a deeply melancholic and sentimental journey through folk-pop, new wave and art music micro presses that span 1961-1991. It's a DIY collection of different genres, from different countries across different decades, that are all bound by the same longing sentiment. A concept compilation! A seemingly disparate suite of selections of forgotten fables by more or less never-knowns, Sky Girl forms a beautifully coherent and utterly sublime whole deftly compiled by French collectors DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery. From Scott Seskind's adolescent musical road movie to Karen Marks' icy Oz-wave, the charming DIY storytelling of Italian-American go-getter Joe Tossini and the ethereal slow dance themes of Parisian artists Nini Raviolette and Hugo Weris, Sky Girl resonates on a wide spectrum historically, geographically and stylistically. It unites in a singular, longing, almost intangible ambience. If the names sound wholly unfamiliar that doesn't matter, the nature of the compositions swiftly nurtures an intimacy with these lonely, poignant, openhearted wanderers. Most were available in a very limited capacity at the time of their release, some were never really released at all - Gary Davenport declined to release "Sarra" after he split with the girl for whom the track is named - years later a friend convinced Davenport to allow him to put 100 copies online to sell and DJ Sundae was quick enough to snare one. Beyond their scarcity, these tracks are bound together by a certain raw beauty that's achievable when music is made and no one is listening. Sky Girl comprises of fifteen officially licensed songs, a two year international scavenger hunt through long-folded home label operations, the depths of internet forums and traceless acetates. Both compilers are well trained record sleuths - DJ Sundae's labels Hollie and Idle Press have reissued Arthur Russell affiliate Nirosta Steel and DIY relic Pitch, while Julien Dechery previously compiled Fire Star, a retrospective on Tamil film composer Ilaiyaraaja, for Bombay Connection. Released by popular NTS show "Noise In My Head" offshoot Efficient Space, Sky Girl is enriched with artwork from Perks and Mini mutant Misha Hollenbach and appropriately elegant sleeve notes courtesy of Ivan Smagghe. Includes digital download. Also features: Linda Smith, Bruce Langhorne, The Seraphims, Some of My Best Friends Are Canadians, The Rising Storm, Warfield Spillers, Joyce Heath, Angel, Nora Guthrie and Once.

JOYCE: Joyce LP (HE 68012LP)
The Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Joyce Silveira Moreno was born and raised in the middle of Copacabana, a short beach stroll from the epicenter of the bossa nova universe. Since her older brother was friendly with leading lights of the bossa nova movement such as Roberto Menescal and Eumir Deodato, she was steeped in the form at an early age and witnessed its key evolution first-hand. She began studying journalism in 1967, shortly before her controversial song "Me Disseram" reached the finals of Rio's second International Song Competition. The following year, her self-titled debut album was produced by Armando Pittigliani, with orchestration by Dorival Caymmi and arrangements by Gaya; along with her own compositions, the album also featured songs by her rising-star friends, including Caetano Veloso and Marcos Valle.

JAN DUKES DE GREY: Sorcerers LP (HE 69016LP)
This incredibly rare release predates their more widely-known second album, Mice and Rats in the Loft (TDP 54020LP). This is superb psych-folk dated 1969. The Jan Dukes De Grey started out as a duo of two multi-instrumentalists, Michael Bairstow and Derek Noy, who stood midway between Tyrannosaurus Rex and Jethro Tull with very short all-acoustic songs with strange lyrics. Similar to early Incredible String Band or Mark Fry, with a touch of Comus weirdness. A mixture of trippy and stoned songs and instrumentals with eastern feel. A unique album. One of the most brilliant acoustic experiments of folk-psych-prog rock ever.

ARDLEY, IAN CARR, DON RENDELL, NEIL: Greek Variations LP (HE 70003LP)
Recorded in '69, Greek Variations & Other Aegean Exercises is irresistible on two counts. First, for its daringly conceived and brilliantly performed music, inspired by Greek folk songs and instrumental textures and deep enough to reveal all its treasures only after many repeated listenings. Second, for being recorded at the moment when the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet, a major force in British straight-ahead jazz since '62, had broken up and Carr's equally influential jazz-rock band Nucleus was rising from the ashes.

AZYMUTH: Outubro (Blue Vinyl) LP (FARO 190X-LP)
Following on from their seminal Light As A Feather LP (FARO 170CD), Outubro (October) was originally released in 1980 and began Azymuth's run of prolific output for Milestone Records throughout the decade. Typifying the consummate craftsmanship of the three members' performances -- each with such distinct personality and together so perfectly balanced -- their perfectionist attitude to sound is maintained across the production on the album, beautifully coloring the expressionist fusion of samba rhythm, jazz progression, funk attitude and psychedelic electronics. The album hosts a wonderful mix of tempos and styles, from Alex Malheiros' earth-shaking slap-bass on "Dear Limmertz," which was to become a hit on London's underground disco and jazz-dance club scenes alike, to the late maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami's genial melodic Rhodes excursions on the vocoder laden, samba-jazz masterpiece "Un Amigo," while Ivan "Mamao" Conti's signature swing on "Maracana" exemplifies the root of Azymuth's "samba doidoi" (crazy samba) philosophy. The two cover versions on the album consist of the title track which was originally penned by Milton Nascimento and Chick Corea's "500 Miles High," both of which magically reimagine the originals and further demonstrate the immense virtuosity of this cult recording. This Far Out Recordings release is mixed and mastered from the original tapes. Pressed on blue color vinyl.

HURLEY, MICHAEL: Redbirds At Folk City LP (FTR 240LP)
2024 restock. "Here's an expanded vinylization of a boss live show from Snock and his Vermont roustabouts, recorded at Folk City on July 17, 1976. Most of it was first issued back in '88, as side two of the Land of Lo Fi/Redbirds cassette on Bellemeade Phonics. But some new masters showed up subsequently, so there's an extra song and a half available for your listening pleasure. And pure pleasure is what it is. I always believed I had seen Hurley play somewhere in NYC before this. I thought maybe it was during the Unholy Modal Rounders' stint at Broadway Charly's, but Woodbill has continuously disabused me of this notion over the years. By his count, there were zero Manhattan Hurley shows until after the release of the acclaimed Have Moicy! album in 1976. And he oughta know. Consequently, this was probably the first time Hurley brought his band out of the hills. Guitar, bass, drums, piano and trumpet, all of them beautifully in sync and swinging like the rural hippie boogie band they were -- tested by long nights in halls filled with rowdy snowmobilers and the women who love them. Hurley & the Redbirds were more than ready to bowl over the city slickers who filled Folk City this hot mid-summer evening. Snock's voice is limber and strong, flipping easily into falsetto and yodels, and the music is faultless. Something like the Platonic ideal of what 'bar rock' can be. They only do one tune from Have Moicy!, but nobody could have minded. The music rolls out like the sweetest-ever guzzle of maple syrup laced with Mello Corn Whiskey. So loaded, so powerful, you're likely to shit the bed if you listen lying down. So hop right up, and let the music shuffle your feet around for you. You'll be glad you did. Besides the boss sounds, this issue includes liner notes by Snock recalling the scene around Fairfield Vermont back in the summer of '75. It's a very nice read. Count yourself lucky. Don't delay." --Byron Coley, 2017. Edition of 2000.

HURLEY, MICHAEL: Blue Navigator LP (FTR 539LP)
2024 restock."Pleased as punch are we to be reissuing Michael Hurley's long-lost 1984 album, Blue Navigator. Admittedly, Secret Seven and Mississippi collaborated on a dandy 8-track version a decade ago, but the record has mostly been available as an obscure import CD -- if at all -- for many a year. The reason for this is that the Rooster Records HQ burned down in 1987, taking master tapes, extra covers and whatever else there was with it. This was a general bummer, but especially so for us Hurley fans, since his final LP with Rounder was Snockgrass in 1980, and he didn't hook up with Fundamental to do Watertower until 1987. The disappearance of Blue Navigator from this earth left a sizable hole. Which we'd now like to think has been plugged. Recorded with a cast of Northern Vermont hepcats including guitarist Jon Weber (of Dan Hicks' original Hot Licks), head Rooster William Wright on guitar and mandolin, Nancy Beavan on vocals, Gordon Stone on pedal steel and various other goners, all playing some sweet rural swing displaying exactly how Hurley became the toast of the snowmobile club circuit during his days in the North Country. A mix of old favorites -- 'Werewolf,' 'Open Up (Eternal Lips)' -- new favorites -- 'Code of the Mountains,' 'Ghost Woman Blues' -- and even a re-write -- 'Blue Navigator' -- it's a great, very casual sounding session, revealing more layers the more you listen. The instrumentation varies a lot between tunes, but the music always flows with Snocky grace and assurance. For this reissue, Michael has written a set of illustrated liner notes that scoot around just the way his conversation does on a long car ride. Which makes me miss the open road as much as anything else today. Just close your eyes, sink back into the music on Blue Navigator and pretend you're drifting through the hills and valleys of the Green Mountain State on your way to a cold growler of beer. You'll soon feel like a million bucks. Promise!" --Byron Coley, 2020

VA: Ulyap Songs: Beyond Circassian Tradition 2LP/BOOK (FLEE 005BK)
Includes book 250-page book featuring essays, archive and contemporary photographs as well as three art commissions questioning this original phenomenon from various point of views. Written in English and Russian. Flee's new issue tries to document a Caucasian musical phenomenon mixing criminal songs, Adygean culture and post-Soviet society, and features original recordings of traditional songs, and contemporary reinterpretations by a selected line-up of electronicesque producers: Emmanuelle Parrenin & Colin Johnco, Misha Sultan, Zongamin, Minami Deutsch, Valentina Goncharova, Simone Aubert, and Ben Wheeler. Ulyap is a village in the Caucasus, where one can find an enormous number of accordion and harmonica players. Ulyap Songs: Beyond Circassian Tradition represents an attempt to document ancient bards' chants and their entanglement with popular rural heritage as well as post-Soviet culture during modern times, through a critical prism. This publication reflects on a music phenomenon involving talented female and male musicians, performing in lively (and sometimes festive) social dynamics. It does so by revealing important songs of the repertoire on the one hand, inviting original artists to experiment with Ulyap songs on the other. Musically, the double LP consists of rare and unpublished archives as well as recordings made by FLEE, Ored Recordings, and Nikita Rasskazov over the last years in various locations of the Caucasus. These original celebrations and drinking songs performed by group of professional and amateur musicians alike have been used as a creative fabric by sonic sound artists and musicians. Also featuring Yura Nagoev, Elena Dokshokova, Damir Guagov, Jrjpej, G.A.M.S, and Vatannar.

GOMES, RICARDO DIAS: Muito Sol LP (HMRLP 024LP)
Hive Mind Records presents Muito Sol, the third solo album from Brazilian auteur Ricardo Dias Gomes. The album is a deep, widescreen exploration in classic Brazilian song that brings all the subtlety and delicacy you'd expect from the pioneers of musica popular Brasileira coupled with a thoroughly 21st-century sensibility and taste for sonic innovation. A respected innovator on the Rio de Janeiro music scene since the mid-'90s, Gomes is perhaps best known for his work on the trio of critically-acclaimed albums Caetano Veloso released in the late '00s: (2006), Zii and Zie (2009), and Abraçaço (2012). Playing bass on these modern milestones in post-Tropicalia, and subsequently touring the world with Veloso, inspired Gomes to record his debut album -11 (2015), followed by the mini-album Aa, which featured Arto Lindsay (2018). Muito Sol was recorded between New York, Lisbon, and Rio de Janeiro and features a stellar cast of global players such as Jeremy Gustin (drums), Will Graefe (guitars), Ryan Dugre (guitars), Gil Oliveira (percussion), Alex Toth (trumpet), Tiago Queiroz (sax, flute), Jonas Sá (synths), Julian Desprez (guitars), Pedro Sá (guitars) and Shahzad Ismaily (synths); the album is often deceptive in its simplicity and repeated listens reveal layers of intricate instrumentation and arrangement, making listening something like an exciting exercise in excavation. Unlike Gomes' previous solo outings, Muito Sol includes a number of songs that explicitly celebrate Brazil's musical heritage and culture that are based on the Samba Ostinato. The songs, led by Gomes' gentle and dreamy voice, are often reminiscent of classic innovators such as Caetano Veloso, João Bosco, or Edu Lobo, though they take unexpected lines of flight into more experimental territory. There is also an element of drone underpinning the whole album which surfaces and takes full charge on "Fllux" and "Transição," before the album is closed by what turns into the molten, distorted piece of raging hardcore, "Coração Sulamericano," Ricardo's expression of pride in his Latin American heritage. Muito Sol is a sun-drenched dream from start to finish and album to be bathed in.

LINDGREN, NICLAS A: Io: Works for electromagnetic radiations LP (KOO 009LP)
Io is the result of a process that started in 2022 during the composition of the music for Bertolt Brecht's play Life of Galileo, directed by Carolina Frände, at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. In Galileo's search for the unseen, he points his telescope to the sky, expanding human perception and our understanding of the world. Here, the electromagnetic fields of the theatre stage are recorded using a sort of anti-radio, an artisanal pocket electromagnetic detector, in line with the significance of the Neosurrationalist bridge between art and science inaugurated by Koo Editions. Sculpting and arranging these frequencies became a compositional practice that began with the track entitled "Io", named after the moon Io, which was one of Galileo's first discoveries. The album was made at the legendary Elektronmusikstudion in the spring of 2023 and finalized during a summer residency at Palazzo Stabile, Piemonte, Italy.

JURANGO: An Amorphous Mass 12" (LIVITY 063EP)
Following his 2021 debut on the reverse label with Retreat Ites EP and a spot on the Molten Mirrors compilation, Jurango is back on Livity Sound with another four tracks of low-slung soundsystem pressure. On An Amorphous Mass EP, Jurango presents a particularly focused sound which draws on halftime D&B, dancehall and broken techno all filtered through the meditative pulse of low tempo club music. The measured pace of the tracks doesn't detract from their weight, whether it manifests in the heavy roll of murky opener "Big Saver," Inner Seam's mutant dembow rhythm or the heady breakbeat chops of the title track. The stripped-back subs and fractured percussion of "Muni Ce Boa" close the record in potent yet understated style, proving minimal music doesn't have to compromise on impact for the dance. Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

ASH RA TEMPEL: Ash Ra Tempel CD (MGART 111CD)
2024 re-release. Ash Ra Tempel is the eponymous debut studio album by the Krautrock band Ash Ra Tempel. It features guitarist Manuel Göttsching with drummer Klaus Schulze and bassist Hartmut Enke. Engineered by Conny Plank, it was recorded in March 1971 and released in June 1971 on Ohr Records. Much has been written about the record and band. Having finished a first musical chapter with their Steeple Chase Bluesband and still at very young age of only 17 and 18 years old, Manuel Göttsching and Hartmut Enke met Klaus Schulze. Together they started to write and compose what, to many, became one the holy grails of psychedelic rock and early electronic music -- the German variant which was later also named "Krautrock." Manuel Göttsching said of the album: "Our musical concept is based on a combination of blues rock and delicate collages of electronic sound. These two elements should remain inseparable. And in their complex unity, the different musical philosophies of each musician find a common sweet spot. Our music is a permanently impulsive experience left to develop as it will, starting from a common fixed point of departure. This is where the difficulty of the music begins: No standardized formulation of our music can and should be possible. Only the constant reaction within the band can determine the musical result? On our album, the track 'Amboss' represents the first layer. Conventional instruments communicate familiar music which is in part expanded through electronic means. In the second track of the album -- 'Traummaschine' -- the actual basic sound approach is dissolved into an electronic Nirvana which no longer allows the concrete identification of actual instruments. Innocent, virgin listening, free from any and every association, can finally begin -- and the music can be absorbed and processed free from the limitations of categorization."

LEARY & ASH RA TEMPEL, TIMOTHY: Seven Up CD (MGART 113CD)
2024 re-release. Seven Up is the third studio album by Ash Ra Tempel, and their only album recorded in collaboration with American Ph.D. in psychology, Dr. Timothy Leary. The cover art for Seven Up was designed by famous Swiss artist Walter Wegmüller. Originally recorded in August 1972 at Sinus Studio in Berne, Switzerland, remixed September 1972 at Dierks Studios in Stommeln, Germany. This re-release of Seven Up has been carefully overseen by Manuel Göttsching himself. This edition features the full original text for the "7 Levels Of Consciousness" by Timothy Leary in English, plus a previously unreleased glimpse view of the original scripts, including notes and mark ups as well as partly unreleased photos from the recording session. Julian Cope´s review and remarks in his book Krautrocksampler states: "The greatness of Ash Ra Tempel burned so brightly on Seven Up that there is really nothing else like it. Hartmut Enke and Manuel Gottsching here returned to their riffy roots. It can hardly be called a retro act, though, as the context of music is everything. And with Dierks at the controls, even the New Kids on the Block would have sounded psychedelic. Leary and Barritt present the greatest twin-vocal of all time, coming on like Jagger and Morrison?. In chaos it was conceived and in chaos it was recorded."

ASH RA TEMPEL: Join Inn CD (MGART 114CD)
2024 re-release. Join Inn is the fourth album by Ash Ra Tempel. It was recorded at Studio Dierks and originally released on LP by Ohr Musik-Produktion. Each side of the LP comprises one long track. In 1972, Ash Ra Tempel teamed up again with Klaus Schulze during the recording of Walter Wegmüller's Tarot album, and after one of the recording sessions, Ash Ra Tempel members Enke, Göttsching and Rosi, together with Klaus decided to "play it again" in a late-night session. This recording led to the birth of Join Inn, as well as two legendary last concerts in February 1973 in Paris and Cologne. Manuel Göttsching recalls Hartmut Enke on bass and Klaus Schulze on drums being a dream-team rhythm section for him to play his guitar, especially here to hear on "Freak'n' Roll", that was ingenious and not to replace ever since. It was the last recording ever where Klaus Schulze played the drums. Join Inn marks the end of the collaboration with Klaus Schulze. However, together with Ash Ra Tempel, their eponymous first album, it is considered a highlight of the Krautrock movement.

HUNGTAI, ALEX ZHANG: Young Gods Run Free LP (LOVE 127LP)
For 46 minutes, Alex Zhang Hungtai punctures the perception of linearity, working like a conductor, encouraging percussive flurries to trip and fall over each other, sometimes tempered by contact mic feedback to help skewer the chronology. He's assisted by three additional percussionists -- Wet Hair's Ryan Garbes and Shawn Reed, and Leonard King - while Signal Decay's Nick Yeck-Stauffer plays trumpet, with each extra voice blurred into the middle distance, curling like pipe smoke into convulsive whorls. The piece is frankly astonishing in its grasp of the maelstrom. Initially tentative, searching, with higher register hits like moths butting lone lightbulbs in an abandoned apartment block, the distant, plangent peal of twin brass wafts between rooms to impart a distinctly floating, OOBE-like feel for space. The brass recedes while the drums' low end thickens and roils like a gamelan tempest, blurring impressions of knackered buildings or the temple rituals of ancient epochs, with sounds wafting in from other rooms to mess with the stereo field like ghosts of worshippers doing their thing. Remarkably, it conjures a fever dream miasma of ricocheting, thunderous polymetric clatter and proprioceptive fuckery without ever losing its head. Hungtai's canny use of contact mic feedback drone and cymbal saw gives the whole thing a sense of gauzy delirium that unites the grouches like mildewed grout and cobwebs, coarsely gelling the elements in a way that resonates with Pauline Oliveros and co's Deep Listening band acousmagique as much as Basil Kirchin's keeling World Within World classic, the ghosts of Sun Ra's Nuclear War, the possessed atmosphere of the cabin where Harley Gaber recorded Wind Rises in the North, and no doubt Harry Bertoia's massive metallic sculptures, agitated at midnight. Humid, menacing, and wraithlike, the album's sense of keening chronics belies a visionary hand at the tiller, here tightened by Rashad Becker's mastering, which faithfully brings to light, and shadow, the depth of perception and wild but concentrated energies at play, sealing in place a truly staggering session for adventurous ears, cineastes and Lynchian acolytes alike. The LP is pressed on transparent orange vinyl. Hungtai is a saxophonist-composer and actor renowned for his work as Dirty Beaches and Love Theme, appearing in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: The Return, and more recently scoring the award-winning Godland.

VAN POUCKE, NICOLAS: Chopin 2LP (ND 010LP)
Following up on his Night Dreamer debut, accomplished pianist Nicolas van Poucke returns with a recording of the works of Chopin. Originally entering the studio with the intention of recording the Chopin pieces, van Poucke's technical skill and emotional depth resulted in producing two direct-to-disc recordings, the other being a Beethoven record released in 2022 on Night Dreamer. Although an unusual method of recording for this style of music, the one-take process was met by van Poucke head-on, balancing the fine lines of emotion and detail, and following in the footsteps of the greats who once recorded in this way. Van Poucke says: "[Chopin]'s music has long held a special place in my heart and remains central to my repertoire. A towering figure in the history of piano music, Chopin's genius has left an indelible mark on the world of pianism. His Etudes Opus 10 were a seminal moment in the development of the art of the piano and are studied by every serious pianist at some point in their development. This new album features a selection of Chopin's works that showcase his mastery in various forms... [H]is skills as a master of the small form are evident in such pieces as the haunting Nocturne Opus 32 No. 1, four Mazurkas Opus 33, the mysterious and harmonically daring Prelude Opus 45, and three Waltzes Opus 64, including the celebrated 'Minute' Waltz, the equally renowned 'Waltz' in C-sharp minor, and my personal favorite, the 'Waltz' in A-flat major." The album also features two of Chopin's larger works, the Polonaise in Fsharp minor Opus 44, a dark and volatile composition that stands as one of his most energetic pieces. Its bold and defiant main theme, as Franz Liszt once noted, is like 'the repeated roar of artillery, as if we caught the sounds from some dread battle waging in the distance'... A charming and innocent idyllic Mazurka is inserted in the middle of the piece, infused with the sweet perfume of lavender and marjoram... The other larger work on the album is the Ballade in G minor Opus 23, a composition that I deeply adore for its narrative power and dramatic sweep. As the final piece on the album, it is a fitting and dramatic conclusion to this collection of Chopin's works."

HEXORCISMOS: Mutualismx 2LP (OP 075LP)
Sound artist, technologist, and electronic musician Moisés Horta Valenzuela (aka Hexorcismos) has been studying artificial intelligence and generative art, wondering how these new technologies might be augmented into his musical process. Born in Tijuana and currently based in Berlin, Hexorcismos has long attempted to break down the permeable borders between musical styles and expressions, using the spaces in between to reinforce his politics and worldview. And on Mutalismx, he expands his vision, inviting artists from across the globe to collaborate on work that questions the biases inherent in AI models, offering a collective alternative that could serve as a blueprint for further research. Hexorcismos began to develop a bottom-up approach to AI, using "small data" to interrogate his idiosyncratic approach to art; he built a tool called "SEMILLA.AI" based on neural audio synthesis that could not only mimic his sonic fingerprint but transform it into another. So when he offered the synth to his network of collaborators, he gave them the option of either using only their data or sharing the signatures of each other artist involved in the project, blurring their identities into a mutual voice. The result is a compilation that unspools with the coherence and fluidity of a single-artist album or adventurous DJ mix, genreless and boundless but unified by a singular message. Hunanese-American artist Kloxii Li for example takes rugged percussion and tense, industrial ambience, smudging her soundscape into a swirling gust of ghostly dissonance. Hexorcismos himself contributes two compositions: the lengthy, hypnotic "Acaso de veras se vive con raíz en la Tierra," an AI-powered scramble of his pointed tribal guarachero experiments; and "Interferencias," a collaboration with Mexican club veteran Bryan Dálvez, aka El Irreal Veintiuno that drives intense dancefloor rhythms into a dense haze of frozen drones and radio static. Elsewhere, Berlin-based Lebanese artist and writer Jessika Khazrik dissolves her voice into a mesh of obscured rhythms and dissociated whirrs, blending the organic with the artificial but retaining an overpowering sense of humanity. Data sets are made by people, and by engaging directly with musicians, Hexorcismos suggests a new way of utilizing a technology demonized and glorified without careful examination. Operating outside of academia and capitalist enterprises, Mutualismx proposes an alternative future -- one without borders that's not beholden to the Western canon, where independent labor can be prioritized and celebrated, and where creativity can truly flourish. Also featuring Ale Hop, Daniela Huerta, Debashis Sinha, El Irreal Veintiuno, Khyam Allami, KMRU, MAF, Portrait XO, Simina Oprescu, and Visions of Lizard.

THUNDER AND ROSES: King of The Black Sunrise LP (OSR 094LP)
2024 restock. Led by explosive guitar player Chris (later Christa) Bond, Thunder and Roses was a power-trio from Philly in the best tradition of Cream or the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This is their sole album, originally released in 1969. A cult psychedelic hard-rock classic, including "White Lace and Strange", famously covered by Nirvana. Thunder and Roses (named after a story from The Astounding Science Fiction Anthology) started to take form when genius 18-years old guitar player Chris Bond and bassist Tom Schaffer met heavy drummer George Emme (previously of The Electric Power House). Rehearsing six days a week the trio gelled quick and soon they were playing memorable shows at venues like Electric Factory and the Trauma. Recorded at Sigma Sound by Joe Tarcia, King of the Black Sunrise was released by United Artists in 1969. Dominated by Bond's outstanding fuzz-wah guitar playing, the album featured seven original songs plus a storming cover of Hendrix's "Red House". Sadly, the record label took a wrong decision when refused to release the killer "White Lace and Strange" as a 45 to promote the album, choosing the mockery "Country Life" instead. After Thunder & Roses split, guitar player and main songwriter Chris Bond had a successful career as producer, songwriter, arranger and session musician, working closely with Daryl Hall & John Oates as well as other top artists. Later in her life, Chris eventually transitioned from male to female and changed her name to Christa. She sadly passed away in 2019.

NEXCIYA: Endless Path Of Memory LP (SONICS 003LP)
Nexcyia unveils his debut album Endless Path Of Memory. Nexcyia's inaugural project delicately explores the realm of sound design, eschewing the over-visited constraints of a tempo grid. Upon immersing yourself, the immediate departure from conventional song structures becomes apparent. Instead, it feels as though the artist fills the silence with disruptive yet evocative sonic experimentation. The compositions appear to surrender to the ebb and flow of textures, revealing a musical journey driven by spontaneity rather than a predetermined destination. The musical endeavor of the London-based sound artist revolves around the essence of sound itself, transcending the pursuit of memorable melodies. It invites listeners into a realm of moods and atmospheres that both surprise and elicits a deeper connection to one's inner realities. Given Adam Dove's background in sound art practices, it's no surprise that his inaugural full-length release is a rich soundscape, weaving through the realm of harsh sampling and gentle synthesis. Requiring the listener to explore with him the boundaries between reality and illusion, he neatly manipulates granular synthesis, interweaves a library from his own archived audio, while pondering the very essence of our universal desire to belong. Endless Path of Memory delves into themes of otherness, skillfully arranging a tapestry of reflections and existential exploration, his use of samples mirrors a forest stream winding through a lush environment, blending field recordings, creating a sonic world where grains pan circularly, engulfing you. Some compositions echo the universal tones of despair, while others emphasize bliss, encapsulating elements of memory with innovative recording techniques. A track featuring Racine emerges as a poignant commentary on modern anxiety, challenging the very ontological questions that define our human limits. In its essence, it invites listeners to embark on a journey into the intricacies of the human experience. The full-length extends a sonic embrace to those who have experienced the weight of otherness, confronting haunting memories while simultaneously crafting a narrative that foretells the sonic contours of the future.

Well, it was definitely a heady year for the punk movement that also coincided with the release of The Clash's debut album. DEAD BANDIT: Memory Thirteen LP (QUI 011LP)
Three years on from the desolate beauty of their debut, Quindi Records presents the second album from Dead Bandit. The ghosts of their past endeavors still haunt their guitars, but on Memory Thirteen the duo's delicately disheveled Southern gothic feels tonally distinct from their prior outing. Dead Bandit is Ellis Swan and James Schimpl -- the former a noted solo singer-songwriter from Chicago with a penchant for eerie, witching hour murder ballads and the latter an accomplished Canadian multi-instrumentalist with a bias towards heartworn, roaming soundscapes. Their instrumental collaboration has an open, lyrical quality which says as much as any spoken line, and on this album they've especially embraced the power of contrast as the listener is guided between scenes, sometimes within the confines of one track. "Peel Me An Orange" is especially instructive in this regard, beginning as a blown-out paean to sonic degradation and the acute sense of hopelessness it projects, only to yield to a lilting tape loop of twanging guitar before entirely widening out in an emphatic burst of post-rock optimism. Post-rock isn't noted for its banal cheeriness as a genre, and Dead Bandit aren't about to lay down feel-good drive-time anthems, but the sense of pulling at extremes of energy and introspection show Swan and Schimpl to be testing the emotional limits of their weatherbeaten sound. The cautiously sentimental mood of "Blowing Kisses" hints at the hard-won light which can be encountered while pointedly driving into darkness. Sometimes noise is a subtle device -- a looming bed of unease under the forthright pluck of Swan's distinct guitar tone or the cracking round the edges of a beaten-up drum machine. On "Memory Thirteen" the distortion on the bass becomes a central figure in its haggard waltz, while "Staircase" and "Perfume" leave the signal wet until the delay feedback becomes the body of the riff. Either way, the sound is never left untouched as Swan and Schimpl grow more comfortable in their exchange, blurring their respective sonic languages as they expand their shared vocabulary to create an album of depth, difference and devoted distortion.

MYERS, LAENA: Luv (Songs Of Yesterday) CD (TGR 045CD)
Wildly creative free-form L.A. singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Laena Myers presents her highly anticipated debut solo album, LUV (Songs Of Yesterday). Released on Taxi Gauche Records, the 11-track collection is the first to feature the genre-spanning composer, in-demand session player/singer and classically trained violinist putting her own name to her recordings. Formerly known as Laena Geronimo and L.M.I./Laena Myers-Ionita, Laena is perhaps best known as lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of critically-acclaimed and internationally touring rockers FEELS, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. She's also known for her time as bassist for goth-punk band Numb.er as well as the Motown-inspired pop outfit The Like, and as the go-to-violinist for a myriad of artists from the L.A. music scene and beyond -- contributing to released recordings by John Frusciante, Jhené Aiko, Ty Segall, Shannon Lay, and The Allah Las to name a few. As a solo artist, Laena's punk background of guitar-based songwriting and swagger merges with her innovative classical/experimental roots and love for singing ballads, and this is shown throughout LUV (Songs Of Yesterday), leading to a depth of emotion that cuts to the heart of even the most hardened, revealing a more tender side to her vocal and lyrical prowess over lush string arrangements. The songs contained in LUV (Songs Of Yesterday) are picked from over the course of a decade, written purely from a place of honest expression and filled with texture, depth, and meaning. They were recorded between tours mostly in sweltering summer bedrooms by friend and co-producer Scott Cornish (Angel Olsen, Big Thief, No Age), and mixed during the pandemic. The album features Laena's vocals, guitar, bass, and violin playing and huge-sounding, lush string arrangements supplemented with drums and percussion by Nick Murray (Cate Le Bon, White Fence, Thee Oh Sees), synths by Jeff Fribourg (Numb.er, Froth), lap steel by Cole Berliner (Kamikaze Palm Tree), and sax by Gabe Flores (Grave Flowers Bongo Band), as well as field recordings -- birds singing at daybreak, footsteps and bells making their way into a cave, the wind on a peak in Angeles National Forest.

DJ LUCKY: Triple 7 LP (TEKLIFE 022LP)
Following up his magical singles "Rupees," Las-Vegas by way of Chicago underdog DJ Lucky presents his debut album Triple 7. Featuring fellow colleagues such as DJ Manny, Taso, and Weezy, this LP compiles work from a rather undocumented member of the Teklife family. These ten tracks are pure modern footwork tailor-made for the dancers, but with tons of rave-friendly sonics in-between. Opening things up with the ethereal DJ Manny collaboration War, Lucky sets the tone for the rest of the album with its thick, moody atmosphere. At times the vibe here is soulful, other times it's eerie, often it's all of the above. There's rolling jungle breaks with a hip-hop lean on tracks like "G.B.G.W.", and there's lots of sinister battle dramatics like those on "Hit Da Flo." The synth work is masterfully crafted throughout the album, with lots of trance-inducing arpeggios like those on "GAWD," and of course the drums are relentless, with huge swooshing snares bombarding your ears on "Lost Without U." It's a perfect soup pot of the emotions that make footwork great: dark and intimidating, yet full of passion. Triple 7 is a great introduction to a member of the footwork community that some fans might have slept on. Lucky grew up in the culture both making music and dancing, and this album proves how crucial his sound is to the art form. It's uncut floor burning music sure enough to cause lots of trouble in the circle and beyond.

PRINCIPLES OF GEOMETRY: Penta 12" (TSR 100EP)
Soon after the release in 2022 of a triple album dedicated to electronic language, Principles of Geometry continues their orbiting journey that began exactly 20 years ago with Penta, a Maxi composed of five electro-geometric vignettes that confirms the discreet French duo pilots one of the most underestimated projects in European IDM. By returning just one year after a massive fifth album (26 tracks), Principles of Geometry makes a clear artistic move: shifting from electronic language unfolded on ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ to gesture, as one would associate intellect with manual, actions with words. On Penta, to be visualized as the five fingers of a hand sketching the immediate and spontaneous pleasure of a hand pressing a chord, Guillaume Grosso and Jeremy Duval thus combine two essential concepts of their electronic music: the need to make the listener dance with their brains, and to touch with their mental images. With nods to the godfathers of the genre (Autechre and Boards of Canada) or crossing paths with Aphex Twin in a Michael Mann film, Penta is therefore a beauty of gesture first conceived with the fingers, and without the need for words to evoke either the romance or the violence of a chord on a Roland Juno 60. Mastered by the legend Noel Summerville (Boards of Canada, Kraftwerk, My Bloody Valentine) and designed by Ian Anderson of The Designers Republic (responsible for the graphics of the cult WipEout and many collaborations with the Warp label), this Maxi is therefore listened to as much as a recreational return to the future of the '90s as it is a concise summary of the equilateral career of Principles of Geometry; equally distant between pure emotion and the need to ponder the notes played in this very special ship.

PAPER GARDEN: The Paper Garden LP (TDP 54125LP)
The American psych pop quintet Paper Garden had established a solid reputation performing to university students in their native New York and in surrounding states in 1967-68 before being commissioned to cut a debut LP with British producer Geoff Turner for Musicor, the resultant sessions yielding a self-contained concept album of totally new work. With sitars and tabla on some songs trading places with baroque elements and orchestrated interludes, the breezy psych pop gets pulled in all manner of directions and often sounds closer to the British psychedelic sound than anything Stateside. A rare and rich listening experience!

DR K'S BLUES BAND: Dr. K's Blues Band LP (TDP 54126LP)
After briefly replacing Eric Clapton in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, guitarist/bassist Geoff Krivit formed Doctor K's Blue Band with pianist Richard Kay and singer/harmonica player Mick Hasse, the lineup completed by bassist Harold Vickers, slide guitarist Roger Rolt, and future Steve Hillage drummer Eric Peachey. Their self-titled debut had top-notch renditions of blues classics such as "I Can't Lose," "Key To The Highway," and "Pet Cream Man," as well as spirited originals such as "Strobe Lemming's Lament" and the piano stomp "Crippled Clarence," but the album failed to break through. LEANDRE/PASCAL CONTET, JOELLE: Miniatures CD (TROST 244CD)
Since emerging in the early 1980s the French bassist, composer, and vocalist Joëlle Leandre has ignored the gaps between improvised and composed music, jazz and new music, inventively braiding post-Cagean concepts with the free jazz ferment she witnessed first-hand growing up in Paris. Accordion master and fellow countryman Pascal Contet was initially rooted in contemporary music, helping to bring it back as a viable, versatile instrument in experimental music, but throughout his long career he's also increasingly embraced free improvisation. Those diverse backgrounds and shared curiosity has made them natural artistic partners, a relationship that has endured for 30 years. Together they have forged a unique duo language built from deep experience and wide-open ears. Their joint practice is all about creating connections in real-time, but that development has only been documented on recordings a handful of times, each new transmission providing bracing updates on their collaboration. The duo tried something different with Miniatures, their fifth album together. Recorded in November of 2022 at Arsenal, Metz, France, the pair imposed a slight restriction on this set of improvisations, deciding from the outset to stick with shorter pieces, hence the title. Leandre and Contet have displayed an uncanny rapport from the beginning, but while most of their work has followed intuitive exchanges, with each musician coalescing or pushing against the flow to create new openings, the music on the new album generally finds them latching on to single spontaneous idea, exploring each nook and cranny. On a piece like "Miniature 2" the bassist begins with shadowy arco figures that seem straight out of a vintage suspense film, and soon she's shadowed by Contet's abstractions, which deliver creaky, wheezing textures and key noises more than the squeezebox's typical chordal swells. On the following piece Leandre sculpts a beautiful sequence of sighing arco melodies, with Contet cushioning and expanding those shapes with a delicate flow of chords that suggests that the fully improvised piece had been composed beforehand. On "Miniature 7" the duo walks a tightrope of fragile upper register gestures, a context further defined by Leandre's wordless vocals. Whether engaged in tumultuous interactions or more contemplative exchanges, the elasticity, listening ability, and generosity of Contet and Leandre has never been more profound.

BROTZMANN & PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE, PETER: Chicken Shit Bingo CD (TROST 246CD)
Peter Brötzmann collaborated with many artists in his career, regularly adding new compatriots into the fold, and Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love became one of his staunchest allies after the percussionist joined the Chicago Tentet in 2004. They worked in various contexts, including this inexhaustible, hard-hitting duo. Most of the albums they've issued have captured live performances, but in 2015 they made this stunning studio recording. As Nilssen-Love says in the liner notes, "Peter had acquired a contra-alto clarinet and was very enthusiastic about the sound of this instrument. I had also bought several Korean gongs which I hadn't used yet." They met up for a two-day session in Antwerp that August, and from the outset it feels different from much of their work.

TIGA & HUDSON MOHAWKE: L'Ecstasy 2LP (TURBO 229LP)
Double LP version. The creative partnership between Tiga & Hudson Mohawke expresses a mutual love of "hardcore romance," a liminal state where the bounds between euphoria, melancholy and the raw power of friendship disintegrate completely. Recorded in Los Angeles from 2019-2023, these commonalities ebbed and flowed through various recording sessions, culminating in their debut album -- L'Ecstasy. Originally conceived as a hardcore rave project focusing on bleary-eyed 6am catharsis, the breadth of the project expanded to encompass their shared love of the music surrounding the '90s ravebiome, with chill-out quasi-IDM ambient creating space for the album's tentpole anthems to breathe. Featuring guest appearances by luminaries like Abra, Channel Tres, Elisabeth Troy, and Jesse Boykins III, as well as album artwork by Turner Prizewinning photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, the result is delivered with two friends churning out the kind of music they want to hear, want each other to hear, and hope to hear you wanting to hear too.

PHEROMOANS, THE: Wyrd Psearch LP (UTR 160LP)
The Pheromoans are tenants of an unruly domain. Over the last 18 years the group have evolved from garage rock primitivists to auteurs of their own curious sound; a frothy brew of loose electronics, refractory rock and humdrum musing. Their songs are mutable, capricious, unreliable narrations, often withholding as much as they reveal. Russell Walker's understated vocal has always been the band's unifying focus, it is wry, unsparing and willfully honest. Walker's lyrics are an observational tour de force, sometimes droll, yet often tipping over into unlikely pathos. With previous releases on Upset The Rhythm, Convulsive, and Alter, The Pheromoans return with lucky album number 13, entitled Wyrd Psearch. It was recorded in Lewes throughout 2023. This was undertaken by founding member James Tranmer, his keen instinct for how the band should sound shaping many of the creative decisions. Joined by new guitarist Henry Holmes, the five-piece doubled down on a decidedly breezy, melodic approach. Scott Reeve's drumming is ever brisk, whilst Daniel Bolger explores AOR peripheries on keyboard and bass. Walker claims that the album's title is an expression of his frustration at the ubiquity of people claiming things are eerie or weird/wyrd in the present cultural milieu. The artwork for the record is designed as an actual word search too, a knowing nod to how everyone grapples for meaning amongst the absurdity of each day. The overriding impression given by Wyrd Psearch is of a band renewed with ideas. There's no trouble finding the right words, they're hitting their mark, keeping up with the commentary. Wyrd Psearch is a document of The Pheromoans mastering their unquiet moment. Limited 180g black vinyl. 500 copies worldwide.

DIVR: Is This Water CD (WJCD 060CD)
The Swiss trio divr debuts on We Jazz on with their new album Is This Water. divr is Philipp Eden on keys, Jonas Ruther on drums, and Raphael Walser on bass, and they play largely acoustic improvisations which loops without ever quite repeating. Their music swings, but never feels like it's doing so in response to a fixed, single pulse. The new album is mixed and post-produced by Dan Nicholls (of Y-OTIS). Their music is elegant in its intricacy while covering a wide dynamic range. Opener "As Of Now" begins with languid chords on the piano, bass and drums skimming over the surface offered by Eden. Later comes a rush of energy, the piano briefly switching into more jagged terrain before peeling back. From there the album journeys through different intensities, rising and falling in smooth arcs. Is this Water presents a band who's heading into a direction of their own, crafting pieces out of improvising together and tapping into a natural brand of instant composition. Nicholls' edits and post production give the music another layer, one drawing from field recordings and layered textural ideas. Together, the elements form a sound that feels personal, organic and forward-reaching at the same time. RIYL: The Necks, Dan Nicholls, Joona Toivanen Trio.

SANDSJO, OTIS: Y-Otis Tre CD (WJCD 063CD)
Berlin-based Swedish tenor saxophonist Otis Sandsjö returns with his third album Y-Otis Tre on We Jazz Records. Y-Otis Tre finds Sandsjö in close collaboration with his long-time working partner and friend, bassist/producer Petter Eldh, and Dan Nicholls, the keyboardist of the Y-OTIS live band and a solo artist on his own right. Composed by the three and produced by Eldh and Sandsjö, Y-Otis Tre lives up to its name ("tre" means three in Swedish) and stands strong in the continuum of layer-caked liquid jazz, a staple of the Eldh/Sandsjö production duo lauded for their string of releases as Y-OTIS and Koma Saxo. While recognizable in form, Y-Otis Tre adds new dimensions to what has come before. Borne out of hours of tripped-out studio jams by Sandsjö and Eldh, Y-Otis Tre feels natural, neon, 3D, at times laser sharp, at times gooey like jelly, and at all times ripe with ideas that would make albums on their own. Golden riffs are taken, twisted, thrown away, then recycled, and always evolving. Perhaps evolution is key here, as the album reuses and cross-refers its own ideas but never exactly repeats. The music has a mixtape-like DNA, and it seems to be breeding and multiplying at each beat. In color terms, it is more RGB than CMYK -- that is, it might appear unrealistically bright and full of tones not found in the natural world. But when you listen to the music closely, you'll likely find it acoustic to the bone. There's no illusion: hearing the band live tells you what Y-OTIS is all about. It's a live band turned studio tool, morphed back into a live band. Or something like that anyway. Putting a tag onto this music feels a bit like trying to hold a very colorful, somewhat thick liquid substance on the palm of your hand. You can see it, feel it, but never fully pinpoint just what's it made of. But it works, so best just to enjoy the ride. RIYL: Koma Saxo, Y-OTIS 1 & 2, J Dilla, Madlib, contemporary R&B, hiphop, and electronic music-influenced jazz.

LOVE CHILD: Never Meant To Be : 1988-1993 2LP (12XU 136LP)
"At the very dawn of the '90s, Love Child's debut 7" made a splash on the burgeoning scene of shambolic bands and lo-fi recordings. Back then, they were mentioned in the same breath as Pavement, Sebadoh, or Beat Happening. But Love Child's two great albums and sparkling singles have become the stuff of record collectors, unavailable vis streaming and out of print, until now. Never Meant to Be: 1988-1993 pulls from these releases and some unreleased radio sessions, unearthing a trove of lost gems by a band that could be the best of all of the '90s buried treasures. Culled from their smashing debut 7", their two full-length albums, another great single, and some unreleased radio sets (including a Peel session), Never Meant To Be has catchy hooks, gritty noise, sneakily-deft playing, brainy but blunt lyrics, and lots of other awesome stuff. Love Child were part of lo-fi's beginnings, but also had the NYC pedigree to absorb predecessors like the Velvet Underground, the Voidoids and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. Will Baum started Love Child while a student at Vassar College, bringing on classmates Rebecca Odes and Alan Licht. All three members were happy to trade roles and instruments from song to song, but they also had some specific chops. Licht was a bit of a guitar prodigy, having taught himself how to tap like Eddie Van Halen, but versed enough in punk to know simplicity could be just as powerful. Odes' bellowing bass was equally prominent, and her vocals could veer quickly from sweet to snarling, like Kim Deal or Georgia Hubley with a jagged edge."

VERITY DEN: Verity Den LP (AMI 057LP)
"Verity Den is comprised of Carrboro-via-Bellingham sound engineer and songwriter Casey Proctor (Harusplex Palace, Holy Sons) with Trevor Reece and Mike Wallace. All spent considerable time in their respective and shared DIY-music communities before converging to form the group in early 2023. Casey and Trevor initially met as members of an adhoc improv ensemble performing tape loops, strings, and electronics as part of a multi-disciplinary series hosted on a rooftop in Chapel Hill called Attic 506. Soon after, the three shifted from long-running musical projects to focus on exploring new sonic territories together. The band operates in an ever-evolving dynamic of group improvisation and studio experimentation, capturing moments of coarse circuit completion and bringing to fruition long-gestating ideas and songs. The sound is raw and largely unadorned, transmitting both truth and wildness. Working from a dedicated studio space in Carrboro, NC, songs came together quickly for the group's debut self-titled album. Engineered and mixed at home by Casey, the LP presents a guitar music refracted through clamor and tenderness, static and hiss, drum machine and synth. The lyrics survey themes of existential exhaustion and impressionistic reflections, all bound with persistent hooks and equally acidic edges. A sense of deep and ego-less collaboration runs through their process, as instruments are exchanged, vocal duties are shared and drum machines meld with live drum kits. The live unit is supplemented with an expanding cast of friends and rippers, that presents the music at its gentlest and most cacophonous."

RUSSELL, ARTHUR: World of Echo 2LP (AU 1002LP)

"Arthur Russell's most extraordinary work, World of Echo is reissued in this remastered vinyl edition by Audika Records. 18 tracks are featured including drumless versions of his disco classics 'Let's Go Swimming,' 'Tree House,' and 'Wax The Van' along with four previously unreleased tracks. Originally released in 1986, World Of Echo is a deeply intimate and meditative work of awe-inspiring grace and remains a timeless work of sublime beauty. Arthur's aim was to achieve what he calls 'the most vivid rhythmic reality,' with just cello, voice, and echoes. Arthur achieved all of this and more on one of the most incredible albums you will ever hear."

O'ROURKE, JIM: Eureka LP (DC 162LP)
2024 repress; originally released in 1999. LP version. "Jim is doing for himself what he's more than generously done for other so-called musical talents. Everybody wants a little pop in their lives and the O'Rourke is no exception. There is no way to listen to Eureka without hearing the eccentricity, the progressive musical textures, the utter lack of anything like pop music, but at the same time it's magnificent in scale, pleasant to listen to, catchy and even reminiscent of other records you might actually have heard on The Casey Casem Show. If Bad Timing was regarded as a crossroads of O'Rourkian interests, Eureka is a six-lane clover-leaf junction of singer-songwriter traditions, production styles of the 70s, confusion and contradiction as well as the riveting sound of the artist putting all his cards on the table."

O'ROURKE, JIM: Hands That Bind LP (DC 839LP)
Repressed. "In addition to his day job transforming pop music with his own records, as well as those of Gastr del Sol, Loose Fur and Sonic Youth over the past few decades, Jim O'Rourke has been contracted for several dozen film scores over the years as well. It makes sense -- his abilities as an improviser, composer and producer allow him to interpret cinematic moments with a unique understanding for their construction and how they work. It doesn't hurt that Jim's a well-versed cineaste, a complete and total fan of watching films, which has given him a preternatural understanding of the role of music in movies. What doesn't make sense is how Hands That Bind is the first film soundtrack of Jim's to ever receive worldwide release! He's worked with filmmakers of international repute, like Olivier Assayas, Allison Anders, Werner Herzog and Kôji Wakamatsu! He served as music consultant on Richard Linklater's 2003 laff-fest, School of Rock! He's played in ensembles of award-winning documentaries and films alike! ... Made for an indie film that's been seen by festival audiences and not enough others, the soundtrack for Hands That Bind is a moody, atmospheric delight. Jim's roots in composition via tape-editing have evolved into a sophisticated assembly of found-and-processed sounds that achieve highly musical, near-orchestral majesty as they hang in the very air of the drama that unfolds in Kyle Armstrong's Hands That Bind. Described as a 'slow-burn prairie gothic drama' set in the farmland of Canada's Alberta province, and starring Paul Sparks, Susan Kent, Landon Liboiron, Nicholas Campbell, Will Oldham, and Bruce Dern, Hands That Bind is a spellbinding trip to the existential bone of rural working life in North America. As conflict rises over the hard-worked patches of land that provide a mere and mean existence, a desperate air settles in, as a series of mysterious, often supernatural occurrences rock the small community. O'Rourke's vaporous, serpentine musical backdrops and atmospheres reflect the obsessions and distractions of the film's principles; moods of all sorts seen or otherwise implied. Additionally, the music highlights cinematographer Mike McLaughlin's closely observed accounting of the farmers' environment, as well as the striking widescreen images of the big sky country with unnerving flair. For fans of Jim's ongoing steamroom series as well as collectors of soundtracks, Hands That Bind will provide hours of engrossing listening..."

GEE TEE: Goodnight Neanderthal LP (GONE 181LP)
"Based in Sydney, Australia and lead by the iconic Kel Mason, this band of maniacal rock 'n' roll miscreants has been blowing drooly-punk minds for the past few years with a rash of out-of-print records and ridiculous videos that have bounced around the proper channels of the internet underbelly. A white-hot set on the web-only Gonerfest 17 was greeted with cheers of joy, and ultimately re-issued as a cassette and LP. They made it over in full three-dimensional form for a completely unhinged US tour in 2022 culminating in a headlining spot at Gonerfest 19. Now, Goner is proud to unleash their new album -- Goodnight Neanderthal -- ten blasts of spazzy lo-fi attack, full of buzzy guitars, cheap synths and earworm hooks that demand to be sung in the shower. Or in the car. Or on a bike. Gee Tee rules. Get on board or get out of the way."

GOOFIN':
SONIC YOUTH: Walls Have Ears Cassette (GOO 023CS)
Cassette version. "Culled from three 1985 gigs in the UK during a transitional and transcendent time in the band's story, Sonic Youth's The Walls Have Ears appeared/disappeared as a 2LP set in 1986, not just a live album but an artful tapestry full of live experimentation with songs, between-song tape segues, darkness, humor and audio verité. It's now issued for the first time officially under the band's auspices."

"The '85 shows were the second time the band appeared on UK soil, Brits now getting juiced to the mythos of the emerging guitar-slinging American independent underground; an art/punk band from NYC sporting casual attitudes and tees sporting Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, and Prince made some good press copy on top of their bludgeoning stage appearance. Paul Smith of the newly-founded Blast First label acted as an overseas diplomatic envoy for Sonic Youth through their SST years as well as issuing their classic 1988 Daydream Nation outside the USA. However the Smith-produced 'bootleg' of their '85 UK gigs surfaced much to everyone's surprise, just before EVOL was to be released. It turned out to be a marker of the group's dissatisfaction that ultimately led to the release's deletion, and the band and Smith parting ways after Daydream. In this 2LP set brimming with primitive classics like 'The Burning Spear,' 'Death Valley 69,' and 'I'm Insane' (uncredited on sleeve), segues and live guitar changes ooze together threaded by Madonna tapes and vocal loops off the board (somewhat a necessity for distraction until the band had a full-fledged stage crew to prepare guitars). The first two sides of Walls are massive, cavernous, with newly-drafted drummer Steve Shelley. SY tear it up especially on one trash-fi excerpt of 'Blood On Brighton Beach' (actually 'Making The Nature Scene') from a legendary outdoor gig November 8th where [Thurston] Moore, [Kim] Gordon and [Lee] Ranaldo's guitars treble-blast dissonant shockwaves over the black-stoned beach of Quadrophenia fame. The record's second slab spotlights an April 1985 at London's Hammersmith Palais and was one of the final appearances live of Bob Bert on drums, again featuring some molten takes on 'Brother James,' 'Flower' (listed as 'The Word (E.V.O.L.)'), and others. This document remains an essential representation of some lean and mean years of the quartet's throttling march out into the world." --Brian Turner

SCHULZE, KLAUS: La Vie Electronique Vol. 3 3CD (MIG 120CD)
"Re-Launch of Klaus Schulze's successful La Vie Electronique series (Vol. 1 to 16). La Vie Electronique first was published as a strictly limited 50 CD-Box and later it was released in chronological order in three-CD-sets including some material never released before. Thanks to volumes like this one, no longer can newcomers (or even diehard enthusiasts) desiring Klaus Schulze's music use the excuse of its unavailability to deny themselves the pleasure of experience. Already, the glut of this singular musician's back catalog has been revived in full, beautifully reissued and repackaged; all of his original, notoriously hard-to-find (well, at least for those of us living on the other side of the Atlantic) recordings, most containing additional tracks, are now easily obtainable, and instantly collectable. The ear can become reacquainted with the vast expanse of Schulze music from its earliest beginnings right up and into its modern incarnations, robust with the now-patented lengthy irises, numerous kaleidoscopic events, and still-innovative breadth of tonalities that have become the artist's stock-in-trade."

GLASS FEATURING YO-YO MA, PHILIP: Naqoyqatsi: Life As War (Red Vinyl) 2LP (MOVCL 055COL-LP)
"Naqoyqatsi is the third and final film in the Qatsi trilogy, meaning 'life as war.' About eighty percent of Naqoyqatsi uses archive footage and stock images manipulated and processed digitally on non-linear editing (workstations and intercut with specially produced computer-generated imagery to demonstrate society's transition from a natural environment to a technology-based one). Just like its predecessors Koyaanisqatsiand and Powaqqatsi, the music was composed by Philip Glass. Performed by members of the Philip Glass Ensemble, and featuring the amazing Yo-Yo Ma on cello, this completes the lengthy score which was begun for this film series with Koyaanisqatsi in 1982. The music is more in the traditional orchestral tradition than much of Glass's work as a familiar doorway to images so disconnected from the familiar world. One instrument, the cello, plays through much of the piece. Some unconventional instruments are used in addition to traditional ones, including a didgeridoo and an electronically created jaw harp. Naqoyqatsi is available as a limited edition of 500 individually numbered copies on translucent red colored vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve and contains an eight-page booklet."

COLTRANE, ALICE: Eternity CD (STONE 005CD)
2024 restock. "As jazz tried to crossover to pop during the mid-'70s -- sometimes succeeding, sometimes sounding death knells for jazz careers -- Alice Coltrane headed in a different direction, although where is still a subject of debate. On the reissue of her wildly eclectic Eternity, which originally brought her from Impulse! to Warner Bros in 1975, two tunes are lush horn-and-string-orchestra settings; two are meditative, Eastern-sounding pieces; the album is rounded off by her first use of vocals (on 'Om Supreme'), and the percussion-heavy, rumba-esque 'Los Caballos.' As is customary all the tracks feature spiritual annotation and explanation."

Side two is especially mind-twisting for its use of surprisingly funky Hindu chants accompanied by Alice's organ and the Indian percussion of the singers. Purists might balk at calling Hare Krishna filtered through a gospel sensibility 'jazz,' but they're too busy arguing about Ken Burns' documentary to worry about Alice Coltrane reissues anyway. This is probably the most 'swinging' Alice Coltrane material since Ptah The El Daoud."
