JENNIFER GENTLE: Jennifer Gentle 2LP (BW 039LP) Jennifer Gentle are one of the most idiosyncratic Italian bands ever. Led by singer, guitarist, and sometimes only member Marco Fasolo, they started their career in the early Noughties as slightly stoned-out-of-their-minds teens equally able to manage short psych pop explosions and 20-minute brain-melting freakouts. They quickly recorded a couple of self-released albums that raised some interest abroad and became the first Italian band to sign to American label Sub Pop, releasing two critically acclaimed albums in quick succession: 2005's Valende (an exercise in hyperactive, sparkling pop mixed with pastoral acoustic vignettes) then followed in 2007 by the much darker and convoluted The Midnight Room (described in a Mojo review as "Syd Barrett lost in a 20's Berlin cabaret"). After 2008, Marco Fasolo preferred to concentrate on production and soundtrack work. He came back in 2013 with the Universal Daughters' album Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?, a beautifully heart-breaking charity project involving collaborations with the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Alan Vega, Gavin Friday, Chris Robinson, Ed Harcourt, and many more. In 2018, together with Liam Watson (White Stripes, Thee Headcoats, etc.), Fasolo produced (at Toe Rag Studio in London) the first album by Turkish musician Umut Adan, later released to glowing reviews by UK label Riverboat Records. Also in 2018, Fasolo arranged and produced the first album by I Hate My Village, an Italian supergroup whose psychedelic take on Afro-funk has become a hugely successful live attraction: he later joined the band as a permanent member. Now it's 2019 and Marco Fasolo and Jennifer Gentle are officially back with their new, self-titled album. Immaculately produced by Fasolo himself, it's a sprawling, full-bodied release touching all of Fasolo's musical obsessions: it effortlessly bounces from a breezy soul glam, goofy funk, intricate baroque ballads, Joe Meek-like instrumentals, and the trademark JG zippy psychedelia, without ever losing its focus on mood and detailed song construction. By far their most complete and accessible album, Jennifer Gentle is above all an immersive listening experience and new evidence of Fasolo's unique songwriting, arranging, and producing abilities: a sometimes pensive, sometimes joyful musical parade to be absorbed as a whole. $26.99 EAN: 5055869570589 ROCK 01. MORRICONE, ENNIO: I Ladri Della Notte CD (BCM 9585CD) I Ladri Della Notte (aka "Les voleurs de la nuit" -- "Thieves After Dark") is a 1984 drama directed by Samuel Fuller and starring Véronique Jannot, Bobby Di Cicco, Victor Lanoux , Stéphane Audran, Camille de Casabianca, Micheline Presle, Claude Chabrol, Samuel Fuller, Samantha Fuller. Ennio Morricone wrote a perfect score to describe all the dramatic loneliness of the two protagonists linked not only by a feeling of love, but also by their criminal acts. Dark and mysterious atmospheres alternate with romantic passages for piano and orchestra, piano and flute with a classic flavor, oriental atmosphere and a dramatic theme with funky bass. Morricone wrote one of his most beautiful themes for this film, a poignant romance of ancient taste for the two lovers. At the time, General Music pressed a 33rpm which contained eleven selections. In 1997, the same material was reissued in Japan for the first time on CD by Soundtrack Listeners Communications Inc., and in Spain in 2002 by Saimel Bandas Sonoras featuring nine additional tracks approved by the composer, alternating with those of the 1984 album. Beat Records now re-release the same expanded material but including first the tracks in the 33rpm sequence followed by the bonus tracks from the stereo session, for a different listening experience. Available packaged in a jewel case with a 12-page booklet. Designed by Daniele De Gemini. Mastering and liner notes by Claudio Fuiano. $16.99 EAN: 8032539495011 SOUNDTRACK |

OLIVIERO & BRUNO NICOLAI, NINO: Il Pelo Nel Mondo CD (BCM 9587CD) Beat Records presents for the first time on CD the complete edition of the soundtrack by Nino Oliviero and Bruno Nicolai from Il Pelo Nel Mondo (aka "Go, Go, Go World!"), a documentary directed in 1964 by Renato Marvi and Antonio Margheriti. A report on the most extreme customs in the most diverse corners of the world, the various episodes include -- in addition to some strip-teases -- visions of half-naked savages, documentation on the beheading of roosters, the slaughter of wild boars, the milking of Swiss cows, the sale of Chinese children in Hong Kong, prostitution and even some religious processions. This film is part of the famous trend of the "mondo movie". At the time, C.A.M. issued a 33rpm with 22 selections in mono; the same material was reissued in America by the Musicor Records label. For this release, Beat Records were able to use the master tapes of the mono recording session, which allowed us to discover 19 unreleased tracks. Throughout the 41 tracks, the listener will be immersed in fascinating sound dimensions that describe musically all the visual stimuli in the documentary.) This premiere "mondo" CD pays homage with great affection to the musical art of two titanic Italian musicians, the Maestros Nino Oliviero and Bruno Nicolai, and will certainly be welcome in every collection dedicated to high quality film music. This beautiful soundtrack will guide you around the world with almost seventy minutes of great, timeless music. Available packaged in a jewel case with a 12-page booklet designed by Daniele De Gemini with mastering and liner notes by Claudio Fuiano. $16.99 EAN: 8032539495035 SOUNDTRACK |

DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO: Alien 2 Sulla Terra CD (DDJ 052CD) Almost 40 years after its theatrical debut, Cabum and Beat Records release for the first time ever the complete score for the movie Alien 2 Sulla Terra (1980, Ciro Ippolito), one of the most obscure films in the Italian horror/sci-fi realm, an apocryphal sequel to the iconic Alien by Ridley Scott (1979), released just a few months prior. One of the most sought-after soundtracks by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis fans, it is a prominent sample of the experimental style of the two composers that would feature prominently throughout the '80s. Their kaleidoscopic score begins with a country flavor and evolves with an astonishing electronic timber, sometimes morbid and obsessive. This release features nearly 80 minutes of music, complete with two cues from Uno Sceriffo Extraterrestre, Poco Extra Molto Terrestre (1979) that are used in the first part of the movie to build tension in a particular scene. This reissue was mastered by Enrico De Gemini thanks to the discovery of first-generation masters in Cabum's archives. Includes liner notes and graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini and English edit by Esteban Medaglia. CD version includes 12-page booklet. $16.99 EAN: 8032539495080 SOUNDTRACK |

FRIZZI/WALTER RIZZATI, FABIO: Lucio Fulci's Gates Of Hell Trilogy 3CD BOX (FBS 004CD) Gates of Hell Trilogy is Beat Records' tribute to the popular apocryphal trilogy directed by horror cinema legend Lucio Fulci in the early '80s, three movies that marked the evolution of the director's style over just two years. Starting with Paura Nella Citta' Dei Morti Viventi (1980), going through E Tu Vivrai Nel Terrore... L'aldila'! (1981), and ending with Quella Villa Accanto Al Cimitero (1981), all three featured the beautiful and skilled Catriona MacColl -- British actress with delicate and expressive features -- and plots dominated by a diabolic exotericism that always closed its infernal stories with all but cathartic epilogues. The scores by Fabio Frizzi (for the first two movies) and Walter Rizzati (for the last one) became part of the cinematic memory of these movies, with timeless sonorities much loved by fans of the films. At the dawn of the 40th anniversary of the first movie of the trilogy, Beat Records makes an iconic homage to these scores by releasing them for the first time together, officially validating the link between these films. The dedication, which we imagine would be appreciated by great Lucio, is in the cover art featuring the films' three evil protagonists, Father William Thomas (Paura Nella Citta' Dei Morti Viventi), Schweick (E Tu Vivrai Nel Terrore... L'aldila'!), and Dr. Freudstein (Quella Villa Accanto Al Cimitero), magisterially painted by English artist Graham Humphreys. The 40-page booklet -- richly illustrated and featuring liner notes by Antonella Fulci, the director's daughter -- is the Eibon sigil on this luxurious edition, a must-have for all lovers of good film music. Hard paper box; 40-page booklet. $41.00 EAN: 8032539494991 SOUNDTRACK |

SCIENTIST: Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires LP (MIR 100739LP)
2020 repress; LP version. Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays Scientist's varied approach, but also clocks in as one of his best outings. Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other wobbly interjections from the mixing board. The record's expert evocation of the Halloween spirit also includes some fiendishly-voiced intros, the cover art's cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th. Along with Keith Hudson's Pick a Dub (1974) and Lee Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub (1973), this is one of the essential dub albums.

MAURICE, CHARLES: French Disco Boogie Sounds Vol. 4, 1977-1991: Selected by Charles Maurice CD (FVR 150CD) The motor hasn't had time to cool down and the belt drive is feeling the fatigue. But Charles Maurice is the kind of DJ who just can't let a turntable rest. After steaming up the slipmat with three sexy compilations of French Boogie (FVR 101CD/LP, 122CD/LP, 140CD/LP), Charles Maurice is back with Volume 4. In the late '70s and early '80s, while France was still firmly tuned into variety-show pop, a few enlightened ears and souls picked up the hypnotic beat of funk from across the Atlantic. These first warrior monks spread the good word in discotheques, jumped on newly available frequencies to fill the airwaves and -- in some cases -- took up instruments themselves to unabashedly build on the U.S. model. In a short decade stretching from the late '70s to the late '80s -- just a blip on the scale of music history -- they turned out material in abundance. Lush productions with colorful covers, groovy typeface, and creative photo shoots, but first and foremost, they made music weaned on, spoon-fed and imbued with funk. Music defined by a groove with a robotic beat (Djeneba) that clearly hears hip-hop banging on the door, where layers of synthesizers, handclaps (Eric Chotteau), horns, and African percussion line up and follow the all-powerful lead of the swelling slap bass (Cyrill). This is music that tells everyday stories, both humorous and lovelorn (Serge Delisle), often packed with pheromones just waiting to be released on the dance floor or sofa (Chris O'Hara). Shaped by synthetic textures, these productions are also spiced with Caribbean and Creole arrangements that reflect the West Indies' critical contribution to French Boogie (Wai Kop, Acayouman). With his immaculate tailoring, slicked-back hair and clipped moustache, Maurice has once again transformed himself into a hi-fi stylus to explore the groove traced by this specifically French musical style. From 45 to 33 rpm, he has traveled the black spiral to bring a new selection that proudly features a number of rarely-heard pieces and even an unreleased track by Marco Attali. True to form, Monsieur Charles carefully crafted this fourth volume from his personal collection of impeccably restored and mastered vinyl recordings. Charles Maurice: where French elegance meets uncompromising musical taste. Also features: Dwight Druick, David Simon, Shen Et Les Shendys, and Aries. $12.99 EAN: 3760179355222 ROCK |

SUNNY, AL: Planets CD (FVR 159CD) Two years after an acclaimed first album (FVR 134LP, 2017), Al Sunny and Favorite Recordings present Planets, carrying on their collaboration and bringing it to another level. Al Sunny is a young and talented singer/musician/composer emerging from the French soul music scene. During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. He quickly matured the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Giving birth to the majority of his compositions through his guitar, he always seeks to bring his songs' melody to the forefront. During his studies he kept experiencing live performing on different scenes and confirmed his choice for a musical career, while also meeting many brilliant musicians, including Florian Pellissier, who later introduced him to Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings. It resulted in 2017's Time To Decide release, a dazzling first album establishing Al Sunny's music and writing style, looking towards the '70s and '80s west coast movement, infused with blue-eyed-soul, pop, and folk flavors. Built on the same influences, Planets is made of eight new compositions, and is clearly a continuation of its cadet, asserting Al Sunny's talent and singing skills. Fully recorded live in analog in Paris, this new album also stands out by an impressive level of production, faithful to some classics of the genre. Mixing catchy melodies, soulful vocals, warm and heavy bass, strong beat and beautiful guitars, and keyboards harmonies, Planets just perfectly meets the AOR and modern-soul golden era standards. BURGESS & SAVING COCO, LEROY: Work It Out/Til I Found You 12" (FVR 161EP) For many disco and house music producers and listeners, Leroy Burgess might be one of the most important figures and inspiration, however being clearly quite unknown to the mass. Born and raised in Harlem, his musical knowledge was picked up informally through his mother (a classically trained soprano) and the infrequent family reunion with his mom's cousin, legendary Philly soul arranger/producer, Thom Bell. It resulted in a 50 years musical career, which started in the late '60s within the Black Ivory band, under the shoulder of famous producer Patrick Adams. The list of project and artists he's contributed to whether as a singer, musician, arranger, writer or producer is then incredible: Inner Life, Dazzle, Logg, Aleem, High Frequency, Change, Universal Robot Band, Rick James, Ben E. King, Eddie Kendricks, Narada Michael Walden, are just a few of them. His influence to the disco and boogie musical movement is quite unequaled, and in the '90s he became also part of the garage and house movement, collaborating with acts such as Blaze, Glenn Underground, and Cassius. Since 2016, after a special gig at the Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon (France), where he was invited by MCDE, Leroy Burgess started touring Europe, backed by a band composed of musicians from the French city. In 2018 at the New Morning in Paris, Pascal Rioux from Favorite Recordings, could confirm this feeling, while he also realized knowing most of these musicians, who collaborated to project from the label such as Mr Day or The Dynamics. There was not much more needed to launch the idea of some Leroy Burgess's new recordings with the band, reviving the '80s analog production golden-age. Today Favorite Recordings is thrilled to present Work It Out/Til I Found You, new two-track single by Leroy Burgess and Saving Coco, produced and composed by The Bernard Brothers and Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart. The Bernard Brothers is a Paris/London based production duo comprised of Elliott and Nevil Bernard. Elliott (aka Seiji Ono) and Nevil (aka Koji Ono) are also involved in running London reissue label, Melodies International. Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart, is a famous French producer, who's proven over the past 15 years, his place amongst the finest producers of groove music in all genres through various projects such as Voilaaa, Mr President, or Uptown Funk Empire to name just a few. $13.79 EAN: 3760179355260 ROCK |

NEF: Mais Alors !!?... C'est A L'envers LP (IBLP 001LP) Mais Alors !!?... c'est à l'envers is the first release by new French label Ici Bientôt (Here Soon ...), launched by Paris flea market record shop Geminicricket. On the menu are suspended time, unsung heroes, hidden records, and next-door marvels. In 1983, NEF released their first and only album, Mais Alors !!?... c'est à l'envers. At that point, the band already had a long history, interwoven with that of various alternative movements from the late sixties to the early eighties. That's what makes this record so special and able to conciliate styles like electronic prog, film scores, and new wave -- while also speaking to DJs (Daniele Baldelli has often quoted it as one of his favorite records). The band's destiny was tied to their native region, the south of France, an idyllic environment that attracted a number of musicians during the 1970s, allowing the group to attend many concerts or share the bill with several groups that went on to be well known: Can, Ash Ra Tempel, Magma, Catherine Ribeiro, Zao, Chêne Noir, and Art Zoyd. Founded in 1975 by Richard Lorenzi, NEF started as a kind of free rock band with multiple influences, going from prog to Musique Concrete, in which any method of making sound was good. The group were two musicians and a photographer, the latter a full member of the band who projected slides over the music and influenced their dreamlike universe. In 1978, Vincent Tronc came on board with his keyboards and synths. While the group had been influenced by electroacoustic techniques until then, Vincent broadened NEF's horizons, bringing in a host of new influences: Ash Ra Tempel, Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze -- the beginnings of electronic music. When this album was recorded in 1983, new directions were being taken; these changed NEF's usual sound. First was the addition of accordion, and a new drum machine, the Roland CJ-5000. Of NEF's first pressing, many were unusable since the records came out totally warped. Then, at the end of the eighties, the small stock of remaining records was lost in the flood of Nîmes. 2000 records were pressed, but very few survived. All the more reason to reissue Mais Alors !!?... c'est à l'envers, an unsung record, free and multifaceted, a quirky and daring musical UFO, transcending eras and genres, between synthetic Krautrock and film score, reminiscent of NEU! (with a red nose), François de Roubaix and Pascal Comelade. Includes four-page insert. $20.39 UPC: N/A ROCK |

KONSTRUKT & KEIJI HAINO: A Philosophy Warping, Little By Little That Way Lies A Quagmire LP (KR 052LP) Restocked, last copies. Second album by Turkish free jazzers Konstrukt and the Japanese avant-garde/noise icon Keiji Haino, this time recorded live in concert. Celebrating their tenth anniversary these days, Konstrukt have since been creating an impressive catalog including collaborations/performances with significant musicians like Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, William Parker, Akira Sakata, Marshall Allen, Evan Parker, Thurston Moore, Michael Zerang, Alfred Harth, or Alexander Hawkins that gained them an ever growing audience and media attention (e.g. a recent feature in the Wire), and they keep exploring new grounds. Like in 2016 when Konstrukt invited Keiji Haino to their home town of Istanbul for a recording session that resulted in a quite unique album: A Philosophy Warping, Little By Little That Way Lies A Quagmire offered -- besides all the elements you may well expect from such a musical meeting like Konstrukt's "acerbic razor-edged sound" (Mark Corroto, AllAboutJazz) and Haino's unmistakable voice/guitar explosions -- some actual surprises like the really groovy opening track with a funky feel and a kind of '70s fusion style album closer. Two days later the free jazz quartet and the Japanese avant-garde icon continued their adventure with a public performance at SalonIKSY, pushing things further and raising the level of energy and rawness. Carrying the same title, A Philosophy Warping, Little By Little That Way Lies A Quagmire proves a condign sister release to their previous studio effort (KR 043LP, 2017). Or, as the famous Asian phrase goes: "same same but different!". Recorded and mixed by Deniz Sağdıç at SalonIKSY, Istanbul. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Cover painting "Solar" by Artur Trojanowski. Personnel: Korhan Futacı - alto and tenor saxophones, zurna, kaval, sipsi, instant loops, voice; Umut Çaglar - Moog (MicroMoog), Korg (X-911), gralla, bamboo flutes, xylophones, percussion, tape echo, Vermona (Retroverb); Berkan Tilavel - Nord (Drum2) electronic percussion, tef, cymbal; Erdem Göymen - drums, cymbals, percussion; Keiji Haino - electric guitar, percussion, voice, air synths. NICK V: House Of Riviera: 8 Tracks From the Golden Era of Italian House Music Selected by Nick V (1991-1993) 2LP (MONA 001LP) Over 25 years of digging, and more than two years of curation, Nick V's debut compilation, House Of Riviera: 8 Tracks From the Golden Era of Italian House pays homage to forgotten gems of the classic Italian house scene. In the early 1990s, Italy hosted one of the most flourishing scenes in the burgeoning world of house music. Whilst the majority of Europe was only just beginning to digest the arrival of this new musical genre born in the US, Italian clubs, DJs and labels were hot on the heels of their counterparts in the already-established scenes of New York and London. The clubs of the Adriatic coast -- also known as the Italian Riviera -- were full every weekend. The soundtrack was provided by the major US and UK acts from the day but also local resident DJs that had been honing their trade since the early '80s. By the early '90s, Italian house music was regularly exported around the world with labels such as UMM, Zippy, D-Vision, MBG, Flying, Palmares, DFC, and Irma releasing tracks inspired by the original New York house and garage sound, but with a very different, unique, and emotional take. Distinct from both Italo-disco and Italo-house, this was the specific aesthetic that was to become the house sound of the Riviera, the soundtrack of the golden era of Italian house music. Nick V's compilation on Mona Musique brings together eight iconic tracks from this specific period, covering the whole spectrum of the Riviera sound. The compilation veers from powerful vocal tracks by Korda and Be Noir to the dubbier cuts by Syncopate and Underground Ghosts, without forgetting of course the characteristic Riviera deepness with tracks from Subway Ground Master, Centric House, Groove Sense, and Optik. Artists featured include legendary DJs and producers from the day such as Ricky Montanari, Alex Neri, Enrico Mantini, MBG, and Ivan Iacobucci. This is a DJ-friendly 45 RPM vinyl-only release, with all tracks remastered with the sound staying true to the dynamics of early '90s production. Double gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Nick V and by flyers and photos from the original Riviera days. $20.39 EAN: 3760179354898 ELECTRONIC |

VA: Oakland Blues LP (NAKED 001LP) This beautiful piece of vinyl is a perfect guide to the untold story of the blues in Oakland. While the history of the blues is more associated with Mississippi, Chicago, Texas, and Louisiana than the West Coast, it's a matter of facts that Oakland has always been a thriving center for African American culture and this album represents a great exploration of its deep relationship with the blues. The whole first side consists of eight tracks of pure West Coast jump blues by the legendary pianist and singer Jimmy McCracklin while the second side is shared between one-man band wizard Juke Boy Bonner and the electric blues of Johnny Fuller and Jimmy Wilson & The Blues Basters. All sessions come from the 1950s archives of Bob Geddins's Irma Records, the legendary record label that became the house for the East Bay Blues sound. $12.39 EAN: 8056099003752 ROCK A1. KOMEDA, KRZYSZTOF: Jazz Jamboree 63 LP (NAKED 002LP) This is the legendary Krzystof Komeda Quintet caught live at the Jazz Jamboree Festival in Warsaw in 1963. A marvelous combo featuring some of the greatest Polish jazz musicians, such as Tomasz Stanko (trumpet), Michal Urbaniak (tenor sax), Maciej Suzin (bass), and Czeslaw Bartowski (drums). Komeda, Stanko, and Urbaniak were sort of pioneers who effectively opened up a way for jazz in Poland. Komeda's fluent modern jazz conception was a perfect synthesis between the American influence and a certain Slavic lyricism. The album includes an astonishing version of "Ballad From Knife In Water" from Komeda's soundtrack for the 1962 Roman Polanski movie. SESTETTO BASSO VALDAMBRINI: The Best Modern Jazz In Italy 1962 LP (NAKED 003LP) Naked Lunch present a reissue of Sestetto Basso Valdambrini's The Best Modern Jazz In Italy 1962. Back in the early '60s, the Basso Valdambrini Sextet represented without doubt the best Italian jazz example. Under the direction of tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso and trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini, there was a super-dynamic combo featuring a bunch of young, expert musicians, such as Dino Piana (trombone), Renato Sellani (piano), Giorgio Azzolini (bass) and Lionello Bionda (drums). As winners of the 1962 "Best Modern Jazz in Italy" contest, they released this album that can be easily considered as a landmark record in European jazz. ROS, EDMUNDO: The Latin World Of Edmundo Ros LP (NAKED 004LP) Naked Lunch present a reissue of The Latin World Of Edmundo Ros, originally released on Decca Records UK in 1970. Trinidad born bandleader Edmundo Ros was a key figure in Latin music in post war Britain. Immigrated to London in the late '30s, he effectively introduced the Rhumba and Samba to the U.K. A charming man and multi-talented musician, Ros became a sensation, attracting the cream of London society to his appearances at the lavish Coconut Grove. Thanks to his infectious mix of authentic Cuban rhumba and other ingredients including mambo, calypso, and samba, Latin music became a significant part of postwar Britain's dance scene. This brand-new second volume in the series will take you in an amazing journey through the Afro side of the '70s disco productions. Certainly, bands like Osibisa, Kongas, and Barrabas with their special mix of Afro-jazz-funk and tribal-freak-rock, helped to spread this unprecedented blend of sounds, that along with classic disco music, were in fact the most danced rhythms throughout the European dancefloors of the era. As in the first volume, Naughty Rhythm Records keep focusing on less known artists and unearthed little gems selected from forgotten dusty singles B sides. Exotic atmospheres and highly hypnotic tribal rhythms are the main ingredients of this Cosmic Discotheque Vol. 2. Twelve Afro-disco singles, all so infectious that it's impossible not to dance to. VA: Tasty Bubblegum Flavor: 12 Rare U.S. Bubblegum Pop Jewels 1968-1971 LP (NRR 002LP) Talking about Bubblegum Music will bring you back to America at the end of the Sixties. In a world where the music industry was at its very peak and the 7" format singles production was rather schizophrenic. The worldwide success of Ohio Express's "Yummy Yunmmi Yummi" and 1010 Fruitgum Company's "Simon Says" opened up the doors to a plethora of new bands ready to take the chance of this new born phenomena. Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffry Katz were the two producers behind many of these projects, while the bands were mostly formed by the same group of studio musicians including the unmistakable nasal voice of singer Joey Levin (Joey Ramone's main inspiration). Avoiding the classics, this compilation will get you through a dozen of rare and unknown productions. Twelve stellar pop gems dated between 1968 and 1971 and a bunch of great simple melodies, sticky like chewing gum. Yummy!!! Come and taste it. FOTE: Fote LP (ROBOT 049LP) Following the short-lived Truth Club with Trefor Goronwy (who later went on to work with This Heat and The Camberwell Now), Fote was formed in 1981 with the trio of Robert Haigh, Deborah Harding, and Trevor Reidy. Releasing two 12" EPs along with one track featured on a split 7" with Truth Club, Fote's entire studio recordings consisted of just eight tracks. With angular constructs of post-punk, free-form improvisations, and wicked time signatures, these tracks shredded boundaries one can still hear to this day. These early foundations are also heard in much of Haigh's later Sema compositions as well as Reidy's motorik percussion with Nurse with Wound, Danielle Dax, and The Monochrome Set. Curiously, Harding's vocal tensions and outright unhinged polarities in Fote sound like much of the exorcisms and brilliant psychodramas on many of Chrystal Belle Scrodd's (Diana Rogerson) later solo albums. An absolutely essential document from the early '80s independent British post-punk scene. Cut at 45 rpm for maximum fidelity, including all eight tracks, and featuring the original sleeve artwork by Deborah Harding. $16.99 UPC: 769791975699 ROCK A1: Perfect Sense (2:52)

HEEMANN, CHRISTOPH: Perception & Association LP (ROBOT 050LP) Consisting of two side-long pieces, Perception & Association was composed over a period from 2012-2018. Opening side A is "Time and Again", a startling work for tape and electronics which pulses over waves of interlocking spatial relationships. These elements are at once distant, even static, yet Christoph Heemann gradually propels the listener along chapters of an unexpected and further revealing sonic narrative. While the deliberate frames and events offer a specific path, even the most active listener will gain new insights with repeated spins. Side B, "The Trains", suggests not merely a travelogue, but a series of meticulously constructed episodes that reference the record's opposite side as well as the album title as a whole. In the spirit of early electroacoustic works by Jacques Lejeune, Eliane Radigue, and Jaap Vink, these new pieces continue to emphasize Heemann's ongoing filmic obsessions and firmly engage the listener with his latest cinéma pour l'oreille (cinema for the ear). Widescreen. Front cover artwork by Ruth-Marie Adam; back cover painting by Fritz Martin. $16.99 UPC: 769791975705 ELECTRONIC A1. Time and Again (24:30)

MUSLIMGAUZE: Lalique Gadaffi Handgrenade LP (ARCHIVE 051LP) Given Bryn Jones's rather slack approach to track titles (both being consistent with and sometimes even just supplying them), it's a bit of a relief to realize that two tracks with the same name are indeed related. In the case of "Arab Jerusalem", which makes up nearly half of the newly-released Lalique Gadaffi Handgrenade, that kinship is immediately apparent even though both tracks are clearly their own experiences. Released as the first track on the Minaret-Spearker picture disc 7" in 1996, "Arab Jeruzalem" (spelling also sometimes being fairly slack) is nearly six minutes of effectively shifting dark ambience, wordless female vocals drifting over the hand percussion, chimes, and static of the track, with eventual conversational loops discussing... something underneath. The end of that version is especially striking for the way the woman's wordless singing starts being sampled in such a way that it overlays the whole track (and, slightly, itself). The almost 24-minute "Arab Jerusalem" here might be called the Deer Hunter version of the same story, building with great patience and many more abstract detours towards what now seems like simultaneously an excerpt and, now, a climax. As with many of Jones' more ambient tracks, the great length just lets it cast its spell more thoroughly and entrancingly. The other three tracks, meanwhile, suggest some of Jones' other work but never evoke them as directly as "Arab Jerusalem". "Jordan River" is nearly as long (a second shy of 20 minutes) but strips out the vocal elements in its predecessor, focusing instead on a more active percussive workout (analog and digital both). The title track of Lalique Gadaffi Handgrenade might bring to mind the title of "Lalique Gadaffi Jar" from Libya Tour Guide, last reissued by Staalplaat in 2015 (ARCHIVE 031CD), but if they're sonically related Jones must have practically melted the other track to get this one. And the closing "Desert Gulag" (like the title track, a much more manageable length than the first two epic tracks here) bears a slight resemblance to "Negev Gulag" from 1996's Fatah Guerrilla, here what was a piercing, repetitive drone is softened and looped over more of Jones' percussion. The result is a well-rounded release that shows off many aspects of Jones' sound as Muslimgauze, while existing (like many of these DAT tapes do) in conversation with much of his previously released work. All tracks written, performed, mixed by Muslimgauze. Recorded, engineered, mixed by John Delf. Unreleased material. Edition of 700. $16.99 UPC: 753907372526 ELECTRONIC A1. Arab Jerusalem

DICK EL DEMASIADO: Celulitis Illuminati LP (SP DELTA-LP) Dick Verdult, aka Dick el Demasiado, is the Philip K. Dick of multi-disciplinary art, the Moby Dick of "cumbia lunática", and the Charles Dickens of literature and experimental cinema. He first fell in love with cumbia when he heard his nursemaid singing the classic "La pollera colorá". From this moment on, he adopted the genre and reinvented it, in a perpetual degeneration called Cumbia Lunática, twisting up the elements of traditional cumbia, the "cumbia of the mucamas", to create an anarcho-tropical vertebral rhythm, one which supports every moving part. Celulitis Illuminati is the powerful debut of the anarcho-tropical gentleman knight of the abstract, Dick el Demasiado, eight dangerous tracks recorded for the first time on vinyl, songs that, upon listening, will liposuck all that grotesque accumulation of adipose tissue out of buttocks and brain. They interweave an amalgam of South American folklore and the cables of electronic music, the plugged-in Ranqueles indians, as in "Asi Que Los Que Sí" ("So That Those Who Yes") on Side A, surrealist and lugubrious beats, poetry made song and "the dead man's drool is good for painting watercolors", as he sings in "Búho Sin Un Ratón" ("Owl With No Mouse"). Euphony that will abduct you away to a viscous street party with "Son Cosas De Hoy" ("They're Things For Today") and to an eclectic and excessive dimension with "pero bien bweno" ("but very proper"). Side B is pure dynamite: "Mecha flan" ("Pudding Fuse"), "Sábado cultural" ("Cultural Saturday"), and "En la jeta" ("In the face") represent the perfect blend of Lucho Argain (La Sonora Dinamita) and Muslimgauze (Bryn Jones). On top of this, the album includes an as-yet unheard gem, "Llama Mi Abogado" ("Call My Lawyer"), produced by Dick himself and Manuel Schaller, the telepathic mage of the Theremin. When the Dutchman stepped off the boat and onto the block, as well as offering us the TV set, the sculpture of a deranged English woman who devours islands like they were sandwiches, the synthesizer, the sound effect, the African drum, the maracas, the indigenous whistle, he obtained for us the song and the stanza, he provided Staalplaat with the language and the poetry, the truthful, the epic of the ugly. Cellulite for mortals, cumbia lunática for the enlightened ones! Numbered edition of 500. $15.79 UPC: 753907372724 ELECTRONIC |

BROKAW, CHRIS: End of the Night LP (VDSQ 024LP) End of the Night was conceived based around a simple, yet extremely emotionally resonant concept. Late one evening the musician and myself were listening to records at home. After many hours it got to the point where everything became completely still, the silence permeating the walls, reverberating. We agreed to listen to one more record, but what would it be? What music could answer that existential quandary of the perfect last record of the night at home? Several years passed before the execution of the concept could take place but Chris Brokaw was collecting notes in the back of his mind the entire time. I suggested collaborators like Greg Kelley (on Chet Baker style trumpet, knowing Brokaw's strong affinity for that player) and Samara Lubelski (whom he played with briefly in Thurston Moore and the New Wave Bandits). Bringing in guests such as Lori Goldston, David Michael Curry, Luther Gray, Jonah Sacks, and Timo Shanko, each track has its own unique combination of small group formations (duos, trios, quartets) very much like jazz, both in instrumentation and mood, if not style or standards. While Brokaw himself is a brilliantly narrative guitarist, known for taking collaborative projects he's involved with to new heights, rarely has he opened his solo work to the same collaborative spaces as with his group projects. The result is a multi-hued, jazz-tinged instrumental record with a melancholy resolve and a deep blue/purple filter. Very much a product of his song writing and playing, End of the Night's guests allow the guitarist to show his interplay and prowess in a variety of settings rooted around a common theme. The album art was done by Hollywood legend Sandy Dvore (Buffalo Springfield, The Cake, Partridge Family), who composed the drawing after hearing the album in full, directly inspired by the music, adding a visual element similar to the stylistic innovations of David Stone Martin. $14.99 UPC: 769791975941 ROCK 01. GAYE, MARVIN: What's Going On LP (VL 990427LP) 2020 repress. Originally released in 1971. "What's Going On is not only Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, it's the most important and passionate record to come out of soul music, delivered by one of its finest voices, a man finally free to speak his mind and so move from R&B sex symbol to true recording artist. With What's Going On, Gaye meditated on what had happened to the American dream of the past -- as it related to urban decay, environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Finally, late in 1970, Gaye decided to record a song that the Four Tops' Obie Benson had brought him, 'What's Going On.' When Berry Gordy decided not to issue the single, deeming it uncommercial, Gaye refused to record any more material until he relented. Confirmed by its tremendous commercial success in January 1971, he recorded the rest of the album over ten days in March, and Motown released it in late May. Besides cementing Marvin Gaye as one of the most important artists in pop music, What's Going On was far and away the best full-length to issue from the singles-dominated Motown factory, and arguably the best soul album of all time." --John Bush, AllMusic $15.79 EAN: 8013252990427 ROCK A1. LAKA, DON: I Wanna Be Myself LP (COS 029LP)
"A classically trained multi-instrumentalist, Don Laka began his career in the '70s and then joined the seminal jazz outfit Sakhile in the early '80s. Already an established musician by this time, Laka was at the forefront of exploring the latest synth sounds of the day. Being introduced to synthesizers by Harari's Alec Khaoli, Don soon began experimenting with different synths like the Oberheim, Juno, and Prophet 5 while using a Commodore 64 to sequence them. Constantly striving for the latest sounds, Laka's early explorations culminated in his debut solo album, I Wanna Be Myself. I went and did an album, recorded tracks at Downtown Studios [in downtown Johannesburg]. Most of the album, except for 'Let's Move the Night,' was done straight with a Fairlight at a different studio, of the guy that owned the Fairlight, Adrian Strydom. He was the only guy in the country who had a Fairlight, I think on the continent. 'This was the first commercial record made on a Fairlight in this country. I remember the other instrument I used was Jupiter 8, which was a very expensive Roland synth, and I used a Juno-60. I would layer them. The only thing I programmed was the drums. You can hear the snare sound, I think it was a mix of some cracked bottles and something that we just mixed.' Holed up in the studio, Laka remembers getting special input on I Wanna Be Myself from master bassist Bakithi Khumalo, who would also feature prominently on Graceland. 'I remember I played all the instruments on it. I played bass, I played all. Bakithi walked into the studio and I said, 'You know, I'm not a bass player. Baks, do you wanna do it?' And he nailed it, in one take!' Reissued for the first time is Don Laka's masterful album."

SCHOOLLY D: P.S.K. What Does It Mean?/Gucci Time 12" (GET 51314EP)
New lower pricing; previously a Black Friday RSD release. "30 years ago, a booming sound was heard rumbling out of Philadelphia, PA. Starting with a trebled-out but thunderous TR-909 drum pattern and galloping forward with little more than a young man's nasal, arrogant flow, that blast was Schoolly-D's 'P.S.K. What Does It Mean'? Released on his own Schoolly-D Records label in 1985, the song was -- and still is -- too powerful and unique to ignore. It took the rap world by storm that year, presenting a counterpoint to Melle Mel's more socially-conscious 'The Message'; literally inventing 'Gangsta Rap.' Schoolly was a musician, drum-programming wizard and force of nature, and he would go on to shock the world with his in-your-face approach to making music -- as bombastic lyrically as he was musically. He simply gave no f*cks, and listeners were drawn into his street-influenced vortex of 'b-boy rhyme and riddle.' As noted in the liner notes to this special release: 'The demand [for "P.S.K."] was so large that nationwide bootlegging was a major distribution avenue, albeit an unpaid one. "Those bootleggers made me big because, when it came down to it, I didn't have the money to get the records out there," Schoolly says. "The person who helped me figure that sh*t out was Luke [Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew and Luke Skyywalker Records]. He took me all over Miami and showed me all the different bootlegged versions of my own records. It was crazy."' On the flipside of 'P.S.K.,' Schoolly gave the world another classic: 'Gucci Time.' Flexing brutal brag muscles, it was another gangsta masterpiece, furthering his legend and bringing even more 909 boom to the still expanding rap world. The opening lines are still quoted by scholars of the game today: 'Lookin' at my Gucci / It's about that time.' Get On Down presents this classic for the first time in deluxe form, which is also fully Schoolly-approved: a custom 12-inch sleeve adorned with Schoolly-D's famed artwork; unique split clear & yellow vinyl; a liner notes insert featuring Schoolly's own look back on the year 1985 as told to author Brian Coleman; and a unique sticker sheet with 8 images taken from the artwork on this 12-inch cover (which was first seen on his early 12-inches, as well as his 1985 Schoolly-D EP and 1986's Saturday Night: The Album)."

RUN-DMC: Run-D.M.C. LP (GET 51318LP)
2020 repress; clear transparent vinyl. "Future archaeologists will discuss two periods in 1980s: before Run-D.M.C. and after Run-D.M.C. It's no exaggeration to say that the group changed the course of music in the '80s, bringing the old-school of rap into the new with one simple piece of flat, black plastic. Coming up in the rap world of the early 1980s under the wing of Kurtis Blow (group manager Russell Simmons managed Blow, and Run was, at one time, a DJ known as 'Son of Kurtis Blow') and Blow's bassist and burgeoning super-producer Larry Smith, the trio -- Joseph 'Run' Simmons, Darryl 'DMC' McDaniels and Jason 'Jam Master Jay' Mizell -- learned from the best, but created their own path. 1983 was the year that they first broke out. With only an Oberheim DMX drum program and some cuts by Jay, 'Sucker M.C.s (Krush-Groove 1)' was a shot across the bow to the slick, post-disco pocket rap had settled into. It was raw, pure swagger and it took both New Yorkers and music aficionados around the world by storm. The song's lyrics are a mandatory memorization assignment to this day by MCs learning their craft. 'Two years ago, a friend of mine...' The group's sound, which was laid out muscularly on Run-D.M.C. (1984), had a harder approach than their peers, thanks to producer Larry Smith's use of live musicians who laid down grooves but didn't soften the edges. Lyrically the group wasn't just about brags either, with songs like 'Hard Times,' 'It's Like That' and 'Wake Up' (the first two were singles). Run's and DMC's overlapping tag-team approach to lyricism was powerful and immensely influential. 'Rock Box,' another single and arguably the centerpiece of the album, was a nod to their hard edge, and a foreshadowing of their first worldwide smash, 1985's 'King Of Rock.' Jam Master Jay's DJ work was stellar, knowing exactly when to jump in and put listeners' ears in a headlock. The album was the first rap full-length to achieve Gold status, and as fans know, the group was just getting started -- their next two LPs would take them to even higher status in the music world, critically and sales-wise. But this is where it all started, and it's a classic that still sounds fresh today as it did more than 30 years ago."

DEEE-LITE: Dewdrops In The Garden 2LP (GET 52728LP)
"When one makes mention of Deee-Lite, the 90's house-funk trio of Lady Miss Kier, and DJs Dmitry and Towa Tei, invariably their Billboard smash single 'Groove Is In The Heart' (Off their 1990 studio debut World Clique) will come up, and for good reason. With its Herbie Hancock-sampling bassline, some classic rhymes from Q-Tip, and guest vocals by Parliament-Funkadelic legend Bootsy Collins, the song became an indelible classic of 90s music, a massive commercial hit for Deee-lite, (Reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100) and is widely considered one of the greatest dance songs of all time. Although a massive success for the group, 'Groove Is In The Heart' led to some pigeonholing from critics and reviewers, who had specific expectations for future records. Rather than deliver more of the same free-wheeling, breezy dance music of World Clique, Deee-lite took a more politically-minded approach with their second album, spurred largely by front-woman Lady Miss Kier, who had a lengthy history of political activism prior to forming the group. 1992's Infinity Within rendered several Dance-chart hit singles, but was not as commercially or critically lauded as its forebear. Deee-lite were undaunted by their change in commercial fortune, regrouping with the addition of junglist DJ Ani, replacing the absent Towa Tei to record their third record. 1994's Dewdrops In The Garden was the result of their efforts, which struck a remarkable balance between the celebratory grooves of World Clique, and the social justice-driven Infinity Within. Lady Miss Kier had done a lot of world-traveling in the time between albums, and the material in Dewdrops was a reflection of her experiences, applying a spirit of global togetherness to their house-funk grooves. Regrettably, Dewdrops In The Garden was not a commercial success, yet it still managed to render its share of #1 Dance Chart singles; the atmospheric techno bounciness of 'Bring Me Your Love', and the spacious funk-house track 'Call Me.' Though Deee-lite would disband soon after Dewdrops In The Garden's release, the record remains an unheralded favorite among dance music devotees for its coupling infectiously bright, and soulful melodies, with banging dance-floor grooves, and unshakably optimistic vibes."

MF DOOM: Operation: Doomsday 2LP (MF 090LP)
2019 repress on black vinyl. "This special edition 2LP package comes housed in an all new exclusive jacket featuring Doom's infamous metal mask icon embossed out of a metallic silver foil. An absolute must have for the Doom completist. The long awaited reissue of Doom's first solo gem, Operation: Doomsday. Remastered from the original Fondle 'Em 1999 issue. Side A is listed as 'Side Zero'. Side B is 'Side One'. And so forth. Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF DOOM hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD (his first group)'s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving frontman Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF DOOM and the Rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable."

JUNGLE BROTHERS: Straight Out the Jungle (Red & Green Vinyl) 2LP (TEG 75510C-LP)
Red and green opaque vinyl version. "De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest may have been more commercially successful, but the afrocentric, jazz political rap movement and unfadeable Native Tounge Massive started with the Jungle Brothers. Their debut full length Straight Out the Jungle opened up many doors that are walked through by today's artists like Mos Def, Common and even Kanye West. Their taste for jazzy horn samples helped kick-start the entire jazz-rap movement, and their James Brown fixation was one of the first. Plus, the group's groundbreaking collaboration with legendary house producer Todd Terry, 'I'll House You,' paved the way for numerous hip-house hybrids that shot up the dance and pop charts over the next few years and appeared to be a staple on every East Coast Rap Album from '88 until '92. The opening track 'Straight Out the Jungle' samples the classic Bill Withers drum break as the JB's tell you where they are coming from. 'Black Is Black' (featuring a young Q-Tip) and 'Sounds Of The Safari' introduces the pro-black edge, while the sexually subtle classics 'Jimbrowski' and 'I'm Gonna Do You' are funny, clever and timely. Hard, smart, fun, clever and brilliant, Mike G., Africa Baby Bam and Sammy G may not have realized it but they crafted a classic rap album that stands the test of time. Available here on high grade, loud pressed, double vinyl for the first time ever!"
