FIFTY FOOT HOSE: Cauldron LP (ZORN 048LP)
2022 repress. Aguirre Records present the first official vinyl reissue of Fifty Foot Hose's Cauldron, originally released on Limelight in 1967. Cauldron is the legendary psychedelic jazzy rock and electronic album by Californian band Fifty Foot Hose. Fifty Foot Hose formed in San Francisco in 1967. Like few other acts of their time, they consciously tried to combine the contemporary sounds of rock with electronic instruments and avant-garde compositional ideas. They were one of the most radical groups of the psychedelic era, and their experimentalism still has the power to shock and surprise even now. What set them apart were the pioneering experiments in electronic music, like the band they are often compared to, The United States of America. Incorporating Theremin, siren, audio generators, and other various electronic effects, as Cork Marcheschi, the band's original bass player, had developed an acute interest in the dadaist/futurist experiments of composers like John Cage and Edgar Varese. David and Nancy Blossom brought both psychedelic and jazz influences to the band. Cauldron, their only album, was released in December 1967, including "Fantasy", "Red The Sign Post", and "God Bless The Child", a Billie Holiday cover. Their sound experiments differentiated them from their contemporaries and most audiences didn't quite know what to make of them. Fifty Foot Hose's music leans more towards White Noise, Silver Apples, and especially United States of America, rather than to flower power movement. After only one album, the proto-cyber psych outfit passed as quickly as they came. Their only mention would be a name-check in Ralph J. Gleason's 1969 book, The Jefferson Airplane And The San Francisco Sound, published over a year after their demise. Ralph J. Gleason wrote: "I don't know if they're immature or premature." History has proven them to be the latter. Today, the original album is very collectable and considered a touchstone of avant-garde rock music. Cork Marcheschi on the record: "The concept was to expand what contemporary popular music was. I thought the avant-garde could have had a home with this new group of listeners but they turned out to be pretty conservative -- intellectually. Drugs were fine -- sex was fine -- stop the wars was good but when challenged with abstract art., they reacted like conservative people look at a Jackson Pollock painting." Cover reconstruction by Jeroen Wille. Remastered by Equus. Includes replica of the original insert. 180 gram vinyl.

BURDSON, SAMMY: Background Action (Conroy) LP (BEWITH 111LP)
Be With Records present a reissue of Sammy Burdson's Background Action, originally released in 1975. Classic library breaks and beats set of super-heavyweight espionage-funk. Rare and sought-after for many years now, this is one of those cult library LPs that rarely turns up on even the deepest dig. Sammy Burdson was one of the many, many aliases of the mighty Austrian composer, arranger and conductor, Gerhard Narholz. Founder of adored library label Sonoton in 1965, and a classically trained composer, his work runs from easy listening through pop, jazz and electronic, to avant-garde. Background Action's first side is all Blaxploitation wah-wah, funky clav and heavy, heavy drums. It's top-quality takes on the sort of hard-knocking psychedelic sleuth-funk that the library labels gave us in spades. However, the real killers are over on side B. Styles upon styles upon styles. The trio of swish "Water Pollution" variations are pure gold. The two-part mid-tempo b-boy drumathon "News Background" is nothing short of epic whilst the sensational "Kabul Trip A" and "Kabul Trip B" are two different takes on some tough funk, street jazz style with some dope organ, bass and drum sounds. In short, this is a must for both DJs and producers. The British library label with those instantly recognizable "orangey-red" sleeves, Conroy began releasing production music in 1965. A sub-label of Berry Music Co, its catalog typified the library industry's strange mixture of tradition and experimentation from the start. Conroy's early releases included work by big band stalwarts like Eddie Warner as well as early electronic recordings by the likes of Belgian experimental pioneer Arséne Souffriau. With Berry Music Co working as a distribution partner to the German library label Sonoton, it was through the Conroy that a great deal of German library music found its way into the UK market. Conroy stopped putting out new music in the 1980s, but its history and its catalog offer an excellent window into the trends and eccentricities of a highly unique industry at the height of its international appeal. Mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis from audio from the original tapes. Richard Robinson reproduced the original Conroy sleeve.

BURDSON/KLAUS WEISS/LARRY ROBBINS BACKGROUND RHYTHMS, SAMMY: Dramatic Tempi / Larry Robbins Background Rhythms (Conroy) LP (BEWITH 112LP)
Be With Records present a reissue of Dramatic Tempi / Larry Robbins Background Rhythms, originally released in 1975. Classic library breaks and beats set of heavy drums and louche funk. The first side, "Dramatic Tempi", is made up of four tracks each from Sammy Burdson and Klaus Weiss. Sammy Burdson was one of the many, many aliases of the mighty Austrian composer, arranger and conductor, Gerhard Narholz. Klaus Weiss produced essential records on German library labels Coloursound, Selected Sound, and Sonoton, as well as making two essential entries in the Conroy catalog. The second side is both titled and also credited to Larry Robbins Background Rhythms. Who Larry was is unknown, but it's not too much of a stretch to think it might be another incarnation of Gerhard Narholz. First up from "Dramatic Tempi" are the phased, gargantuan hip-hop beats of Sammy Burdson's impeccable "Pop Waves". The magnificently titled "Cyclodrom" is a beast of booming bass and wah wah guitars over frenetic funk drums. "Devils Drive" is dramatic, blaxploitation street funk with rolling, pounding drums. "Crime Ways" is an acid-squelch, slow-pace neck-snapper. Klaus Weiss starts by asking "Is It Hip" with clean, skipping drums, booming bass, and proto-hip-hop bells, layered beneath laconic and melodic guitar shredding. "The Camp", propelled by jazzy guitar à la Joe Pass over fast drum and conga breaks, gives way to the dark guitars and cymbal crashes of "Tomorrow". It sounds like an early New Order jam session. Closing out a pretty startling side of library greatness, "Rhythm Trip" presents early stuttering funk before easin' on in to a jazzy, soulful groove; all breezy guitar and warm keys. Larry Robbins Background Rhythms is a lighter, poppier affair, but it's not without its drum-heavy bangers. "Vox Pop" and "Pop Phase" each have clean, open-ish drum breaks, ripe for sampling or more daring DJ sets. "Pop Twang" is a short and sweet beat-heavy number that gives way to the fantastically out-there "Canned Pop". The final seven tracks are a set of 1-to-2 minute "Percussion Takes". WEISS RHYTHM AND SOUNDS, KLAUS: Sound Inventions (Selected Sound) LP (BEWITH 113LP)
Be With Records present a reissue of Klaus Weiss Rhythm And Sounds' Sound Inventions, originally released in 1979. From the notoriously strong mind of Niagara drummer/library-funk overlord Klaus Weiss, Sound Inventions is loaded with tripped out studio funk-freakery, mad samples, and swaggering abstract funk grooves. From dramatic deep disco with dark Italo/Moroder leanings to heavy German funk breaks, this is absolutely sensational. Absolute synth-and-string-drenched magic. Born in 1942 in Gevelsberg, Germany, Klaus Weiss began his career as a jazz drummer at sixteen (with a group called the Jazzopators) before working with the internationally successful '60s groups the Klaus Doldinger Quartet and the Erwin Lehn Big Band. In 1965 he formed his own trio, the first of many groups to bear his name, and as his renown as a bandleader grew over the next decade it naturally led to working in production music. About as cult as it gets when it comes to library music legends (German or otherwise), he produced essential records on German library labels Coloursound, Selected Sound, and Sonoton, as well as making two essential entries in the Conroy catalog. Collections of music in the trademark Klaus Weiss sound of electronics unsurprisingly built on top of sometimes funky, sometimes frenetic, but always hard-hitting drums. Sound Inventions is one of those library records with a hefty track list, 22 in total, but they're all pretty stunning. That's not something you can often say and picking out the highlights is almost impossible. If pushed, go towards the tough teutonic funk of "Drumcrazy", the by turns juddering and sweeping majesty of the title track "Sound Inventions", the aquatic serenity of "Glide", the elegant strut of "Greenwich Street", the muted, eerie cosmic-funk of "Air Space", the squelchy acid-clavs of "Rhythm Function", the calming, melodic "Waves", the stuttering proto-Timbaland sensation that is "Rainbows" and the percussive funk-fueled workout of "A Few Cuts". Founded in the late '60s by German composer and musician Klaus Netzle, Selected Sound began as a production music company specializing in jazz, orchestral and electronic recordings. You can't miss those early LPs in their iconic glossy metallic copper sleeves with minimal German typography. Mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis from audio from the original tapes. Richard Robinson reproduced the original Selected Sound sleeve.

KONGAS: The Best Of 2LP+CD (BEC 5161938)
2022 restock. It couldn't be simpler: a boy, tired with his work, decided to quit everything and form a band. In most cases, the band and the hopes didn't last long. With Kongas, French disco producer Marc Cerrone's first band, this was more complicated. In the early '70s, the young man made his own revolution. Musical director at Club Méditerranée, in charge of programming musicians in holiday resorts, he had a quiet job but he was bored to death. He decided to leave all this to focus on his only passion: make music himself and play drums, his instrument. One summer, he went playing in the streets of Saint-Tropez, in front of the hip bars of the time (le Sénéquier or le Gorille) and impressed a local character: Eddie Barclay. Barclay got him to play a local club and Cerrone urged some musicians he had met a few weeks before to join him. The concert was a success and they spent the summer playing the mythical Papagayo before being signed by Barclay: Kongas were born. It was to be a quick journey but punctuated with nice moments. With tracks melting rock and Afrobeat, the band toured a lot in France and abroad (they even played Japan, which was very rare at the time). Fed up with the record company's requirements and its desire to turn Kongas into a more pop affair, Cerrone left the band after two albums, Afro Rock (1974) and Africanism (1977). Yet, he would stick to the band's musicians and some of them are still playing with him today. He kept on working with Don Ray, who arranged most of his albums and whose cult album, revered by all disco lovers, he produced. In some way, Kongas was the matrix for the records to come. Pressed on double white vinyl.

MUNK, JESPER: Taped Heart Sounds LP (BILLBROOK 001LP)
LP version. Since Jesper Munk's debut album in 2013, the German singer-songwriter has made a name for himself as multi- instrumentalist, "in the paths of Jack White and Dan Auerbach," as the Rolling Stone puts it, playing music that ranges from blues and soul to heartfelt pop and indulging jazz, all this with a very unique, post-punk edge. Taped Heart Sounds offers an evolution of Munk's sound: warm, gentle and soft vibes that go deep. "If there is a way to give you a hug in form of an album, this is how I'd attempt to do so," says Munk. Recorded in an offbeat band room in Berlin with The Cassette Heads, the album brings together classics reaching from blues to rock n' roll. Twelve songs of legendary artists who have influenced and inspired Munk since his early days, including Tom Waits, JJ Cale, Etta James, Hank Williams, Willie Dixon, Jacques Brel, and Mocky. The entire album was recorded with a Tascam Portastudio 8-Track Cassette Recorder which brought an original and authentic sound to each song: "The technical limitations immediately liberated all other aspects of the recording," Munk says. "It shows how much of making music is just listening and without a screen to catch your eye, you really have no choice but to do so." The outcome of this analog experiment is a very personal album, both inspiring and consoling. Taped Heart Sounds courageously opens with Donnie & Joe Emerson's "Baby". Munk's interpretation stands out and has a presence that gives the song a life of its own -- made for walking. "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "All The World Is Green", "I'd Rather Go Blind", "Head In The Clouds" -- what follows is a journey through blues and soul that is so vital and "now" that "End Of The Line" may be the final track but certainly not the end of the story. The album wouldn't be what it is without collaboration and partnership. Munk's special thanks go to his fans who helped to crowd-fund the recording. "On top of having had a real fun learning experience it all felt like a community project with real support from friends, the Cassette Heads, incredibly inspiring guests, and from Miles Deico, a wonderfully open and able engineer," so Munk about the making of the album. Taped Heart Sounds is Jesper Munk's fourth album, following acclaimed debut album For In My Way It Lies (2013), CLAIM (2016), and Favourite Stranger (2018).

MOEBIUS & PLANK: Rastakraut Pasta LP (BB 048LP)
2022 restock. Vinyl release. Dieter Moebius and Conny Plank got to know each other through their work on Cluster's 1971 album and remained close friends until Plank's death in 1987. They made a congenial pair as musicians, as amply demonstrated by their first album as a duo, Rastakraut Pasta, originally released on Sky Records in 1980. On this album, drums, electric guitars and bass are the cornerstones of every track; they provide the framework to which Moebius adds fresh color and life with his synthesizers. Thanks to the technical merits of Plank's studio, the keyboards sound barely distinguishable from one another. No samples -- strictly analog from start to finish. Holger Czukay (Can) plays bass on three pieces and his consummate professionalism sees his virtuosity finely-tuned to the concept of Moebius and Plank. Moebius has a predilection for surrealist cascades of noise, heard throughout the album, grotesque yet playful. An enigmatic form of pop music came into being on this LP, a breakneck, elegant mix of diverse elements: a touch of Krautrock, some avant-garde pop, new German electronica, even sporadic echoes of reggae. 180 gram vinyl LP housed in a printed inner sleeve with full-color photos and notes by Asmus Tietchens.

LULL: Moments 2LP (CSR 295LP)
Isolationist, minimal, alienating drone/dark ambient from Mick Harris (Scorn, Fret, ex-Napalm Death). Staggeringly beautiful, glacial sub-bass sounds, deep ambient and thunderous tones, with subtle shifts. Originally released as a 99-track continuous CD in 1998 (Relapse), now presented on vinyl for the first time, Moments is expanded to 100 cuts, with bonus material from the original recording sessions. File next to Lustmord, Sleep Research Facility, Thomas Köner. Double LP in a textured gatefold sleeve.

"Tectonic rumblings and icy sound slivers move and swirl around each other, slipping into spaces between the molecules which make up your physical body and then break it apart in preparation for rearrangement. Moments of expansive emptiness and claustrophobic terror overlap one another and then overcome your mind as you journey through this bleak void of sound. At one moment warm and organic, the next, slowly slipping into a machine-like coldness to freeze and paralyze... Sound as a vehicle to bring you through that doorway towards dimensions previously unknown. Hypnotic and soothing with a lingering sense of dread throughout" --Carrion Kind.

FENTON, GEORGE: The Company Of Wolves LP (CSR 299LP)
Out-of-print for over 35 years, the official soundtrack to the cult 1984 film by Neil Jordan is finally available once again on vinyl format. The surreal and effective film -- a true gem of British Gothic fantasy horror -- has an equally atmospheric, breathtakingly beautiful, surreal and unsettling soundtrack, scored by George Fenton. The film itself, directed by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Breakfast On Pluto), and based on the screenplay by Angela Carter and Neil Jordan, is a modern allegorical adaptation of the classic Grimm fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, symbolizing sexual awakening, duality and liberation. The stellar cast features Sarah Patterson, Angela Lansbury, Stephen Rea, David Warner, and Danielle Dax. Oscar-nominated/Emmy and BAFTA-winning composer George Fenton has created stunning scores for major films and television such as: Gandhi, Dangerous Liaisons, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Frozen Planet and countless others over the last 40 years. 180 gram vinyl.

"There is a sense of awe and enchanted wonder enraptured in its fairy tale sound, swooping with cascading violins and dark mysterious undercurrents that bubble below the surface... The score flows effortlessly between its light and dark moments. Most importantly, moments of beauty are not lost to the sense of suspense and drama. Indeed, light always needs its companion of shadow, as the film suggests in the sexual awakening of the pure untainted innocence that is Rosaleen. This score perfectly demonstrates the beauty of the juxtaposition between the sounds of youth and the temptation of desire." --L. Hammond

"The film largely takes place in the dream world so I made this the home base for the orchestra. To a large extent the scoring in this area is conventional, perhaps a little impressionistic and hopefully reflects a curious but endearing world. This left me free to invent sounds for the stories within the dream world. I wanted to use a mixture of electronics and 'live' instruments, and after some experimenting, arrived at a line-up of three bass flutes, pan pipes, violins, one, two or three solo double basses, percussion and Synclavier II synthesizer." --George Fenton, (1984)

IL EST VILAINE: Les Mysteres de Lorient Remixes LP (DIALECT 032LP)
After the release of their first album (DIALECT 028LP), Il Est Vilaine ask to artists and friends to deliver a series of highflying remixes: Tolouse Low Trax, Krikor, Khidja, Marvin & Guy, Golden Bug, Rubin Steiner, C.A.R.... Tolouse Low Trax opens the ball with a de-structured version of "Yvré-L'Evêque" while keeping the darkness of the track. You can hear a nod to the track "Holland Tunnel Dive" anthem of the Salon des Amateurs. For the eponymous track, Khidja were inspired by the sounds of the land of the rising sun which is a good thing to accompany the song of Narumi Hedgehog! A bright version and influenced by YMO's Sakamato era. Golden Bug and In Field proposes an alternative just as trippy as the original version of "Marilyn Drum", a trip between neighborhood hospitals and crazy guru. Another version of "Yvré-L'Evêque" this time Krikor takes care of it and takes out his sampler for a digi-dancehall version that only he has the secret, Faya! Rubin Steiner delivers a version back to the roots of "Bar À Gwin" featuring Macdara, mixing deep house texture and '80s NY-hip-hop/electro. The two Italians of Marvin & Guy bring out the hits, the guitars and the arpeggios for an epic version of "Les Mystères de Lorient". To close the album, Narumi Hérisson is at the controls of her piano for a dreamy and sensitive version of "Phare Ouest" where her voice and that of Yula Kasp are mixed in a great harmony.

COSMIC JOKERS, THE: Galactic Supermarket LP (KM 580086LP)
Repressed; LP version. 180 gram vinyl. In 1974, the Cosmic Jokers were basically Klaus Schulze, Manuel Göttsching, various Ash Ra Tempel and Wallenstein members doing late night jamming. Galactic Supermarket is one of them, and is more rock-oriented than many others. It's no surprise the music bears more than a passing resemblance to Ash Ra Tempel, because of Manuel Göttsching and his guitar playing. Also, Jürgen Dollase gives some nice keyboard work, particularly the piano, Farfisa electric piano, synths, and even a little Mellotron. Klaus Schulze were more responsible for the more droning organ and synth end of things, it's pretty obvious when he plays it. The legendary producer Dieter Dierks plays bass on these nearly never-ending improvisations. The recording was transferred from the original analog tapes at the Dierks Studios in Germany. Carefully remastered for an incredible result. Released on the label Die Kosmischen Kuriere (The Cosmic Couriers)

PERRY & SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM, LEE "SCRATCH": Super Ape Returns To Conquer (Lilac Vinyl) LP (EB 129C-LP)
2022 repress. Lilac color vinyl. 41 years later, Lee "Scratch" Perry uses today's sound system to revisit his classic Black Ark album that defined Jamaican dub music, reincarnating the magic for the sound system generation. Big question about it: "How do you improve on a masterpiece?" Lee "Scratch" Perry defined dub music with his seminal 1976 Super Ape album, and he returns with New York City's Subatomic Sound System to conquer again, definitively reincarnating the magic of his Black Ark studio in Jamaica, heavy on Ethiopian horns and percussion, while reinvigorating it with the 21st century booming bass and beats that capture the energy of their innovative live electronic show. Largely known as the mentor to Bob Marley, Perry's influence has transcended reggae. Since 2010, he has toured with NYC's Subatomic Sound System, his go-to band for recreating his Black Ark studio sound live on stage, in new exciting ways as a one-of-a-kind hybrid of beat heavy electronics and live musicians, including original Black Ark studio percussionist Larry McDonald. Subatomic Sound System has been pushing the envelope of electronic music in combination with reggae since their inception in 1999. In dub, Lee "Scratch" Perry is a star at organizing and remixing the music with drum and bass in the forefront and tweaking knobs and faders, adding effects like a jazz improvisation. In the 1970s, the idea of a producer as a star, rather than a singer or musician, seemed crazy, but looking across the world of star DJ producers, he is rightly acknowledged as a visionary as well. There are many stories to be told, but this album follows on the mission of the tour which has the goal of reaching out to old fans and new fans. As sound system culture continues to expand globally with reggae and beyond, these are DJ-friendly heavyweight versions of Scratch material that makes sense in the 21st century. "Scratch" started his music career as a dancer so he loves to get a party started even at 81. The album shows that Scratch was 40 years ahead of his time with Super Ape, and that at 81, he's more relevant to youth culture than ever. The original "Burning Man", "Scratch" was called "the Salvador Dali of music" by Keith Richards and Bounty Killer hailed him as "the greatest Jamaican artist of all time". Features: Jahdan Blakkamoore, Screechy Dan, and Ari Up of The Slits.

HEIGHT/DISMAY: Height/Dismay 7" (EFFICIENT 024EP)
Height/Dismay were the M Squared studio-as-instrument duo of Patrick Gibson and Dru Jones. A member of Systematics and Scattered Order, Gibson was an integral part of the M Squared label and studio, where he met Jones. With an unapologetic misuse of instruments and ample time, the two sonic explorers scraped guitar strings, manipulated clarinets, and contact mic'd woks to layer their echo chamber apparitions. Collating three 1981 recordings, the then-shelved "Blood Pressure In The Sand" joins "Dusk", their contribution to archetypal cassette-zine Fast Forward. Also unreleased, "The Tinning Test" rejects formal lyrics in favor of a deadpan reading from the Australian Standard for tinned copper wire. The outsiders of the outside, these mutual minds' productions have long been overlooked as crucial pieces of the Australian DIY music puzzle. Height/Dismay is pressed in an edition of 281 hand stamped white labels, wrapped in white ink printed colored card.

FRENZIED BRICKS, THE: The Frenzied Bricks 7" (EFFICIENT 025EP)
Crossing over to Adelaide, odd wave minor players The Frenzied Bricks completely bypassed the history books with indifference. This madcap union of school friends Chris Merchant and David McCarthy cut void-entering motorik and weirdo monologues in bedrooms and suburban rehearsal studios. Rumored to be an individual, they never bothered to disprove the gossip with live performance. They did however submit aspiring demos to community radio station 5MMM, where they were fortuitously stored for four decades. The 7" marks the non-band's debut release, combining two should-be classics from the vault. "(Can I) Bridge The Gap" apathetically tunnels with Neu! Order energy, dual bass and McCarthy's laconic vocal delivery, while their only instrumental "Entropy" calls in guitarist and unofficial Brick Dave Warren to send the TR-808 into the stratosphere. Unknown until now, this is down under synth-wave at its finest. The Frenzied Bricks is pressed in an edition of 327 hand stamped white labels, wrapped in white ink printed colored card.

BANDT AND LIME, ROS: Soft and Fragile LP (EFFICIENT 026LP)
Efficient Space presents Soft and Fragile by Ros Bandt and LIME (Live Improvised Music Events), originally released by Move Records in 1983. A pioneering figure in Australian music, Bandt is known for her work with sound sculpture, electronics, acoustic ecology, and invented instruments, as well as her writings and teaching. Soft and Fragile comprises a series of structured improvisations performed on custom-built bells and gongs. On the side-long "Ocean Bells", Bandt performs on her "flagong", a three-tiered vertical glass marimba that she made in 1978, inspired by the "cloud chamber bowls" of maverick instrument builder and microtonal composer Harry Partch. Over a long tape loop made up of slowed down sounds from the same instrument, she delicately strikes the glass bells with mallets, allowing individual pitches to ring out and decay with the aquatic wavering quality that suggested the piece's title, eventually building into flowing melodic sequences. Structured as a series of events determined by the length of the performer's breath, this gently undulating music invites listeners to lose themselves in delicate microtonal fluctuations and subtle yet expressive phrasing. For "Shifts", Bandt is joined by Julie Doyle, Gavan McCarthy, and Carolyn Robb on a collectively composed work for clay bells. Atop a steady pulse, melodic and rhythmic cells expand and contract, shifting between LIME's four members. LIME also perform the closing "Annapurna", where timbres sourced from glass, clay and metal are freely threaded through a pulsating tape backdrop generated from loops of the ensemble chanting. While Bandt's ideas and techniques draw on aspects of the invented instrument tradition of Partch and Bertoia, Stockhausen's intuitive music, and the cyclical structures of American minimalism and Javanese gamelan, the floating world of Soft and Fragile also resonates with the work of new age outlier Stephan Micus and contemporary practitioners such as Tomoko Sauvage. In Bandt's own words, this is "elegant and sensual music where the body and mind have the time to reflect and catch up with the moment as it passes -- It is a music intended for respite." Presented in a redesigned sleeve showcasing the performers and their instruments, the reissue reproduces the extensive original liner notes.

Lo-fi was rather an involuntary attribute in the '90s. '90s hip-hop instrumentals with the sound aesthetics of old 12-bit samplers are the blueprint for everything that runs under chill and lo-fi beats today. For this double-LP, Sepalot dug deep into his demo box, listened to countless DAT cassettes and dug up 36 pearls from the period 1996-2002. Sepalot: "I had to laugh a lot at times and was sometimes embarrassed, but the innocence of the early days also has an insane power. The best beats demos and sketches from my early days now get their moment." Old demos from DAT tapes.

MERZBOW: Noisembryo/Noise Matrix 2CD (HOS 594CD)
Noisembryo definitively presented here with bonus disc titled Noise Matrix including unreleased material from the same sessions as Noisembryo and counterpart Hole and selected recording from the time period. The bonus disc alone makes this essential for any Merzbow fanatic as well as new listeners. When people ask where to start with Merzbow, this is the answer. The holy grail, not only of Merzbow's obsessive discography, but of the entire '90s noise movement. You've heard the stories surrounding the infamy of this release, but beyond that stands the depth and wild energy over two decades later that Noisembryo encapsulates. Velocity loops, roving automotive bass, and cacophonic drum machine gel together with the surprising inclusion of a sound rarely heard within Merzbow's many years... Masami Akita's own voice. Akita's surrealism of the past stands prominently relevant to this day. The original Noisembryo on disc one; disc two, Noise Matrix, includes: Track 1 - taken from original DAT tape which including Noisembryo recording on 1994; Track 2-5 - taken from original DAT tape which including Noise Matrix (in Hole) on 1994; Track 6 - a track recorded on 1995 for releasing Eskimo compilation; Track 7 - taken from original cassette tape which recorded on 1994 and remixed on 2019. TRENTEMOLLER: Memoria Cassette (IMR 045CS)
Cassette version. Includes two bonus tracks: "Golden Sun" and "Shaded Moon". Danish composer, musician and producer Trentemøller announces his new studio album Memoria which is set for release in early 2022 on his own label In My Room. Anders Trentemøller's sixth studio album, Memoria, seems to exist at the confluence of inspiration, coincidence, and maybe even a little bit of the supernatural. A recent, unanticipated drop of four songs, in the form of two singles ("No One Quite Like You", and "Golden Sun"), might leave one surprised to find that a full album's worth of material was also waiting in the wings. As with most Trentemøller releases, it's a body of songs that are thematically linked by many melodic threads. The first single from the upcoming album, In The Gloaming, which is released in September 2021, implies the arc of the album might have actually begun late in the day, giving the sensation of waking in the evening. Nocturne's dawning. Stars emerge in the form of percussive arpeggios. 2019's Trentemøller album Obverse (IMR 033CD/LP) was an exercise in what could be done if the prospect of performing the songs onstage wasn't a factor. It opened up some doors, and signaled a new chapter. Memoria, even considering its resplendence, almost feels like it demands to be presented live as well.

HYPERNATURAL: Hypernatural LP (IFEEL 075LP)
Hypernatural, comprises of Dan Whitford, better known as one of the pillars of Melbourne heavyweights Cut Copy, Mirko Vogel, the engineer extraordinaire who has recorded for Modular and Room40, and Mike Gamwell, also known as Knightlife, who's racked up several releases on Cut Copy's own Cutters Records. You could say their roots are in Melbourne, Australia, but it seems unfair to pinpoint the trio to any specific location. That's because their sound lies somewhere deep in misty forests, or half-remembered dreams and subconscious wells of ancestral emotion. The transformative power of these seven tracks was no accident however. The music was pieced together during two trips -- one to the remote Swedish coast and another to the Scottish Highlands. The three producers used a set of guidelines that allowed each of them to compose and arrange tracks separately yet collectively, like a connected Oblique Strategy. They took inspiration from the stark beauty of their natural surroundings, which had a huge effect on the music they were making. The resulting tracks inhabit a world of their own, full of shimmering arpeggios and drifting pads, taut drums and sound effects. The opening track "Longboat" cruises into view with white noise washes and galley master rhythms, conjuring Old Norse battleships and a sense of sailing the open sea, destination unknown. The single "Stormfront" is a depth-charged deep house burner, bristling with atmospheric energy and rolling like thunder. Hypernatural particularly succeeds in its world-building, and there's a cohesion to the tracks despite their many differences in tempo and style. "Spirit Walk" joins marimbas with modular pulses, as well as slide guitar and snappy shakers, to bring out some Ry Cooder swagger. "Unknown Caller" taps into the phone line at the speed of 5G, sending breakbeats down the wire on a cold calling mission to recruit ravers for the next after hours. Both "Changing Tides" and "New Dawn" slow down time to an introspective moment, a catch of the breath, the witness to a beautiful moment. Album closer "Valley" harks back to classic rave-era ambient, an avalanche of optimism down a majestic mountainside. Hypernatural evokes panoramic vistas and serene countryside, and you could certainly imagine it soundtracking a hike along coastal hills, or a field at a festival. But it also resides beyond the pastoral, finding a home in airport departure lounges and autobahn service stations, until it eventually settles down inside you -- even without the headphones on.

STUDIOGRUPPE I: Studiogruppe I LP (IFEEL 076LP)
Not much is known about the German session musician ensemble Studiogruppe 1 from the '70s and '80s. It's believed that the grandfather of one member, known only as V.S., originally soundtracked silent films in theaters -- although that hasn't been proved. Studiogruppe 1 never rose to prominence in the heyday of studio groups and library records, but it certainly wasn't due to lack of trying. Although it's unknown who the individual members of Studiogruppe 1 were, it's clear they could find a groove within the machines. It appears the sessions were also engineered by V.S., and there's plenty of space between the notes, which lends a heady atmosphere of anticipation to the music. Just close your eyes and you will find that the music triggers many scenes from the movies in your mind. Take the opener "Dunkler Sonnenaufgang", for example. Waves lap on the shore line of an alternate Coney Island, while the sound system of an abandoned amusement park plays arpeggios in the distance. "Errinungen" could complement expansive panoramic time-lapses of natural cycles and rolling clouds. The track "Wenn Der Tiefe Schlaf Kommt", might accompany a documentary on REM dream cycles and flotation tanks. "Sonnentanz" raises the temperature, as act III in every movie narrative should, as protagonists rush to overcome their challenges. "Ein Neuer Anfang" would perfectly soundtrack the plot twist of any number of thrillers, film noirs, or sci-fi mysteries. Album closer "War Alles Nur Ein Traum" could supplement slow-motion shots of dawning realization, foreshadowing a betrayal or a cliffhanger. V.S. and Studiogruppe 1 have condensed the evocative sounds of the '80s into something of an art form. Bringing to mind the lilting melodies and melancholy chord movements of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, or Manuel Göttsching, Studiogruppe 1 manage to capture widescreen emotional flash points without the need for celluloid, or barely any visual aid, for that matter. These tracks work just as well in the furnace of your imagination or a dark room filled with dry ice and lasers.

SANTTANA, LUCAS: 3 Sessions In A Greenhouse (Yellow Vinyl) LP (MAIS 043YEL-LP)
Yellow vinyl version. Mais Um present a reissue of Lucas Santtana's 3 Sessions In A Greenhouse, originally released on CD only in 2006. On the 15th anniversary of its original release, Mais Um revisit a lost classic from the catalog of one of Brazil's most regarded and influential contemporary songwriters. Featuring Tom Zé and mangue beat pioneer, Gilmar Bola 8, Lucas Santtana's 3 Sessions In A Greenhouse fused psyched-out samba and baile funk with original Black Ark-style studio distortion and spiritual dub dread, laying the foundations for his seminal Sem Nostalgia LP five years later (MAIS 002CD/LP), and in the process, establishing Santtana as an elemental force of Brazil's current new wave. "At the beginning of my career, I was experimenting, trying to figure out my sound. On 3 Sessions In A Greenhouse, I discovered what I am and what I wanted to do in music. All the pieces connected. Everything just felt like the right place at the right time." Comprising four originals and four Santtana/Seleçao Natural dubs, 3 Sessions In A Greenhouse was and is a sound clash unlike any to have come before. Produced by Santtana and Recife's dubsetter himself, Buguinha Dub, each session was approached as an opportunity not to just record each instrument but to create an environment in which the studio becomes the centerpiece. Recorded and mixed entirely live as a group, with no overdubs, 3 Sessions feels uniquely intimate and relaxed (best typified by the band's "chat" in-between recordings). Tropicalia icon Tom Zé features on Santtana's slightly zippier version of Zé's samba dub "Ogodô Ano 2000" and American journalist Phylis Huber's reading of an extract of Virgina Woolf's The Waves on the expansive nine minute-long Balearic/Afrobeat dub "A Natureza Espera", is poignant and trippy. Santtana's take on Naçao Zumbi's "Pela Orla Dos Velhos Tempos", featuring original member and percussionist Gilmar Bola 8 on vocals, takes on techier references of the Detroit type, whilst vinyl closer "Into Shade" is a sumptuous psych rock dub ballad, co-written by Arto Lindsay. Remastered by German dub shaman, Stefan Betke/Pole. RIYL: Dennis Bovell, Tom Zé, Gilberto Gil, Beck, Caetano Veloso.

"This is as solid a dub outing as has issued from anywhere beyond Jamaica" --Pitchfork (7.4).

PFIRTER: Altered States 2x12" (MINDTRIP 040LP)
What is techno if not a powerful conduit for energy? The movement of a sequence, the surge of an effects rush, the respondent reaction in every individual dancer and the moving mass of the crowd as a whole. Whether the frequencies transmit directly into the brain through the intimacy of a headphone reverie, reverberate through the architecture of a space or fill the formless void of the open air, techno's potency to initiate and stimulate energetic events is profound. This is something Pfirter understands intimately, having spent more than 15 years exploring ways of manipulating the energy on a dancefloor. Of course, energy is not just about volume and aggression. Tonality, spatial processing and composition can have just as profound an effect as the thump of the kick drum. On his new album Altered States, Pfirter proves that point by zeroing in on the cerebral, psychedelic elements of his craft across ten incisive tracks. The Argentine producer consciously approached his second album (following 2019's The Empty Space) with a minimal mindset, using a very focused set of drum machines and synths to achieve a consistency across the record. Captured over a short burst of creativity, it's the sound of an artist pushing a limited array of tools as far as possible. Despite this concise palette, it's not an album that repeats itself, but rather an extended trip that flows from one detailed, textured immersion to the next. The dense, febrile waves of hard-oscillating ripples in "A Future In Chaos" and the sparkling, off-key chimes adorning "Yearn" all speak to Pfirter's gift for extravagant, surrealist expression within his tracks. "Altered States", by way of contrast, succeeds in its absolute immediacy -- a piledriving statement of bleep-driven intent. "Boiler" and "Convergence" land somewhere in between, coiling around kinked rhythmic incantations which still push forwards with precision while offering a different angle from which to approach the dancefloor. Cementing the idea of the whole album as a listening experience, Altered States is bookended by "Venus" and "Dissolution", two minimal exercises in drone-oriented mood setting. Spanning linear rhythms and broken beats, moments of calm and writhing intensity, Altered States offers a multitude of energetic possibilities in the mix or as a standalone piece of music. Ultimately, it's a masterful return from a leading light of the contemporary techno scene.

SCHAEFFER & PIERRE HENRY, PIERRE: Symphone Pour Un Homme Seul - Concerto Des Ambiguites LP (OI 005LP)
2022 restock, last copies/reduced price. Electronic/avant-garde music pioneer and founder of the French musique concrète movement, Pierre Schaeffer, a radio engineer, believed that any sound could be music, and was one of the first to experiment with tape looping, splicing and sampling. He was also one of the first to record music on magnetic tape. Drawing inspiration from the Italian Futurists, he emphasized the double meaning of the word "play", meaning to play an instrument, but also to have fun and enjoy oneself. Pierre Henry, a classically trained musician, was one of Schaeffer's disciples and together they co-wrote the revolutionary "Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul", recorded in 1950. Despite its title, it is not a symphony in the classical sense, but a kind of suite divided into 12 movements. It is a musical collage featuring vocal fragments, that are at times recorded backwards, accelerated or repeated, and other sounds like whistles, footsteps, doors slamming, metallic sounds, and a prepared piano. However, what is important about this piece is not merely its intrinsic musical value, but its influence on so many future generations of musicians in so many genres. "Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul", over half a century later, remains a pioneering experiment in the search for new aural horizons. The Concerto side reveals Henry's personal approach to dissonance, with a strong impact of illogical sequences in the piano "duel": the two instruments seem to collide in a furious rejection of the traditional idea of music, generating a clash of noises that reproduce the sonic pollution of the modern times.
"Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul" (1949-1950 - First concert performance on March 18, 1950, at the Auditorium of the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. First performance as a ballet by Maurice Béjart on July 26, 1955, at the Théâtre de l'Etoile in Paris. HTRK: Rhinestones LP (NJB 001LP)
LP version. HTRK mint their N&J Blueberries label with a startling fifth studio album, finding the duo stripped to a quietly cathartic quintessence of heartbreaking vocals and spectral webs of guitar in a modern, classic and wholly inimitable style. Recorded in their native Dandenong Ranges, Australia, during April-May 2021, Rhinestones contains some of HTRK's most aching/gratifying songwriting secreted in subtly plangent sheets of dubbed guitar, synth pads and ember crackling 808s. It's an album that seems to have been precision-tooled for tortured romantics and atomized souls, reverberating with a gentle pathos and unfurling at an effortless pace that's practically therapeutic. Distilling their form of lowkey emotional manipulations to a fine art, the metaphysical soul of their songcraft somehow bleeds out more clearly than ever, infusing every song from the heartbreak pucker of "Kiss Kiss and Rhinestones" to the intoxicating, spirit-catcher sway of "Gilbert and George" with the tumescent glow of MDMA-tingled flesh and the uncanniest air of déjà vu. All nine songs land like a salve to the senses with a micro-dosed sensitivity that reveals every shimmering string, pad and echoic snare contrail like a halo around Jonnine's incredible vocals, which regale tales of love and the mysteries of the night with an observant, diaristic directness that has an unshakeable emotive clout. In key with the times, the songs feel like the soundtrack to emptied cities, casting gothic shadows in the spellbinding reverbs of "Valentina" and mottled beauty of "Siren Song", with the fragged ketrock of "Fast Friend" imagining a séance with Prince and Anna Domino, while Conrad Standish (CS + Kreme) lends bass guitar gilding to the saloon sashay of "Real Headfuck", and "Straight To Hell" basks in a transition between the golden and crepuscular hours. Oh -- and "Sunlight Feels like Bee Stings" -- what a title?! Put plainly, no other band do it quite like HTRK, and Rhinestones feels like their purest iteration, conjured in a mist of feeling, love and inebriation. Mixed by Nigel Yang. Design by Jonnine Standish.

Ohr present a reissue of Birth Control's Operation, originally released in 1971. Re-release of the second album of the Berlin outfit on the original Ohr label. Produced by the famous photographer Didi Zill in 1971 at Hansa Studios.

"Birth Control's second album, Operation, stands as one of the band's finest recordings, getting the vote as the second-best album of 1971 by one of Germany's leading music magazines. Operation has Birth Control employing a nine-piece string section as well as a smaller brass entourage in order to produce a larger sound, and while their progressive air is just beginning to flourish, a rather large difference in musical strength and instrumental craft is noted right away. Not fully abstract or left-of-center just yet, the powerful crunch of Bruno Frenzel's guitar surely leads the way, dominating the rhythms of every track while complimenting the aeronautics of the keyboard passages..." --Mike DeGagne, AllMusic

SABLA: Music For Melted Floors 2LP (SONICS 001LP)
Pensaments Sònics is a new label born from the necessity to release albums from a sonic perspective. The label will focus on works and projects built around artist conceptualization, sound design, experimentation, new creative approaches, innovative techniques and the exploration of artistic boundaries and intersections with other art forms. The label's inaugural release is by Torino-based artist and Gang Of Ducks co-founder Sabla. Music For Melted Floors is a record about changes, perceptions and illusions. Music that aims to create a cozy dimension where space and time lose their life-defining role in favor of more tactile sensations. To do so, the Italian producer weaves seven deep compositions that unfold in circles, constantly moving and subtly evolving. Introspective music that explores mental spaces and contrasts between abstract sound washes and ceremonial percussion. The idea of space is one of the key points of the record. As Sabla himself explains, he "tried to think in terms of 3D space" while working on the tracks, "moving things back and forth in an attempt to warp this sonic space." A way of distorting perceptions that generates unstable yet serene soundscapes. For fans of: John Talabot, Donato Dozzy, Azu Tiwaline. Mastered by Neel.

LEE, YUTIE: Flower Protocol 3x12" (PUBLIC 036LP)
Part I (Disc 1): The Taiwanese artist Yutie Lee covers six Chinese folk songs about flowers. "Tuberosa", "Rose", "Jasmine", "Plum Blossom", "Orchids", and "Chamomile" all are odes to the beauty of the plant. The flower also being a metaphor for something you are desperately longing for, but can never quite get. However, you may want to interpret the songs, they are all telling a story of something pure and indestructible. In the end nature will prevail? Romantic thoughts created in a time long before the current state of the world. By artificially mutating her voice, Yutie Lee successfully manages to transfer the songs into 2020's arguably much more complex, dystopian reality. She does this not without a bow to the past, prevailing something of the original songs' sweet essence, even adding a layer of humor... in the end leaving the listener with a feeling of good hope.

Part II (Disc 2-3): To complete the package, Yutie Lee's versions have been remixed by Alva Noto, Bell Towers, Laura Groves, Oceanic, and Suzanne Kraft.

WOO: Paradise In Pimlico LP (QUI 005LP)
After their celestial Arcturian Corridor opened proceedings on Quindi, London-based brothers Clive and Mark Ives are back with a new record. When Woo first began recording at home in the early '70s, Clive and Mark were the embodiment of furtive genius. Since re-emerging in 2013, they've released scores of albums, collaborated with Seahawks, and have now struck up a productive relationship with Quindi. On Paradise In Pimlico, you're hearing a very different sound to the one gently creaked out on early classics like Into The Heart Of Love (1990). This is fulsome, contemporary production rich in detail and artful sound design, but crucially, Clive and Mark's gorgeously melodic approach remains open and inquisitive, even with the sheen and shimmer of modern studio techniques. Woo sound more confident than ever in their composition, too. The crystalline, fragile tones of "Cadenza D'Innocenza" glide through key changes that spell out an engrossing narrative, while the cascading melodies on "Moment To Moment" pirouette across the space between notes with masterful poise. "Paradise In Pimlico" is an illustrious suite of orchestral composition played out with the lightest touch, framed by the slightest of synthesized fauna and topped off with tender sax and flute. Album closer "In Case Love Fails" takes on a subtly cinematic urgency with its undercurrents of walking bass and the strike of the string section (synthetic or otherwise). There's space for markedly new approaches, too. The rhythm section on "The Motorik Mirror" clunks and pops with a tactile, high-definition quality which teeters between electronic sculpture and clockwork, organic machination. The deft, lightly-brushed drums coursing through "Even More Notes" see Clive and Mark step into a different mood, celebrating the beat as another fluid, tonally-rich texture in the mix and adding a smoky, jazzy hue to the Woo repertoire. It's far from a drum-focused exercise though. At every turn, you're confronted with aching beauty and timbral surprises. If there's one constant throughout Paradise In Pimlico, it's the omnipresent chimes. These twinkling drops of light scattered throughout are something of a hallmark of Woo, ensuring the lilting, lullaby-like magic of their music persists whichever direction they head in. SMITH, REUBEN VAUN: Sounds From The Workshop 2LP (SNDW 143LP)
Having further honed his craft, Reuben Vaun Smith returns to Soundway Records with a sonic odyssey through lo-fi Balearic and Afro-Caribbean influenced synth. Heralded as one of the best summer releases of 2020 (Beat Caffeine), Warm Nights (SNDW 136LP) introduced his unique blend of synth-based Balearic grooves, mid-tempo lo-fi beats, and sun-drenched sonic landscapes. A lush debut and an inspiring story of resilience from the former football promise that turned to music production serendipitously after an injury halted his career. Smith's second album continues his exploration into improvised live instruments and programming, while venturing into new territories of music-making and genres including soca, benga, and trip hop. Also sliding into the mix are organic sounds and riffs reminiscent of 2000s Villalobos sunrise scorchers such as "Waiworinao", keeping the Balearic thread firmly present throughout the album. Having learned to sail along the southern coast of Spain in the last year, Smith spent a winter locked down in Yorkshire, channeling summer memories into his music and drawing influences from his own record collection which he would play everyday in the studio. With a few local friends and his brother to jam with, the result is dreamy and lo-fi, with more guitar-led melodies, distant vocals and lush pads. Smith's debut album from 2020, Warm Nights, received an array of rave reviews and support from DJs including Tom Ravenscroft, Antal and Bill Brewster. One year later, with Sounds From The Workshop Reuben Vaun Smith delivers a matured, varied sound and a glimpse into his incredible future potential. For fans of: Greg Foat, Felbm, Ricardo Villalobos, Harvey Sutherland, Hidden Spheres, Bonobo, St Germain.

RZEWSKI, FREDERIC: Speaking Rzewski: Performed by Stephane Ginsburgh CD (SR 523CD)
Released in Sub Rosa's Unclassical series. "This album is the result of years of work and friendship with the composer. It started with 'De Profundis', a piece which has had a deep impact on me as a musician and a person, and ended with it. Frederic attended many of my performances of the piece, the last one during our last public concert together in early 2020 in Brussels. In the meantime, he wrote 'Dear Diary' (2014) and 'America: A Poem' (2020) for me which were both premiered at Ars Musica festival. I am very happy to present these pieces to you on this new and special album coming out on Sub Rosa." --Stephane Ginsburgh

Frederic Rzewski (1938-2021): Frederic Rzewski was born in Westfield, Massachusetts in 1938. He initially studied piano with Charles Mackey in Springfield and went on to study composition with Walter Piston (orchestration) and Randall Thompson at Harvard University and with Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt at Princeton University, where he also took courses in philosophy and Greek. A Fulbright-Scholarship enabled him to study with Luigi Dallapiccola in Florence in 1960-61. His musical collaboration with Dallapiccola marked the beginning of his career as a pianist for contemporary piano music. His friendship with Christian Wolff and David Behrman and his acquaintance with John Cage and David Tudor influenced his development, both as a composer and as a pianist. During the 1960s, Rzewski taught and took part in the first performances of Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Klavierstück X" (1962) and "Plus Minus" (1964). From 1977 to 2003, he was a professor for composition at the Conservatoire Royal in Liège, Belgium. He also taught at various other universities, among them Yale University, the California Institute of the Arts and the Berlin University of the Arts. Rzewski founded the live electronics ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum in Rome in 1966. After his return to New York in the early 1970s, his politically outspoken compositions probably made it difficult for him to obtain a long-term teaching position in the US. Frederic Rzewski lived and worked in Brussels. He left us on June 24, 2021 in his Italian home in Montiano.

Stephane Ginsburgh (1969): A tireless surveyor of the repertoire but also explorer of new combinations including voice, percussion, performance or electronics, Stephane Ginsburgh performs as a soloist in many international festivals such as Ars Musica (Brussels), Quincena Musical (San Sebastian), ZKM Imatronic (Karksruhe), Agora (Paris), Bach Academie Brugge, Ultima Oslo, Darmstadt Internationale Ferienkurse, Gaida (Vilnius), Warsaw Autumn, Klara Festival (Brussels), Festival Forum (Moscow), and Musica Strasbourg. He has collaborated with many contemporary composers such as Frederic Rzewski, James Tenney, Philippe Boesmans, Jean-Luc Fafchamps, Stefan Prins or Matthew Shlomowitz as well as with choreographers such as Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker (Rosas) and visual artists such as Peter Downsbrough and Kurt Ralske.

It would be a mistake to think she had any similarity to Paolo Poli in La Nemica. She had a repertoire to explore according to the instructions of Proust, and she explored it with the same devotion that she had applied to the music of Berio or Bussotti. In this recital she explores the most varied vocal territories: from traditional songs to Berio and to . . . The Beatles. In addition to compositions by Kurt Weill, William Walton, and herself. WINTER, MICHAEL: Counterfeiting in Colonial Connecticut / a lot of tiles (trivial scan) 2CD (XI 148CD)
XI Records announce the release of a double-CD set of Michael Winter's music organized by guitarist Elliot Simpson. Each CD features a single composition, demonstrating different sides of Winter's work.

The first, "Counterfeiting in Colonial Connecticut", is a socially-engaged piece written for Simpson and in honor of George Floyd. The second, a lot of tiles (trivial scan), derives music from a set of mathematical tilings (often referred to as tessellations). The album art features reprints of altered and counterfeit colonial Connecticut bills as well as custom-made, hand-stamped prints of the tilings. "Counterfeiting in Colonial Connecticut" interleaves guitar passages with readings of excerpts from the book of the same title written by Kenneth Scott and published by the American Numismatic Society in 1957. Readings from the Scott Compendium are complemented with readings of texts written by Winter reflecting events that occurred during the composition of the piece; particularly the protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, a black man brutally murdered by police while being arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill. Simpson is accompanied by Gemma Tripiana Muñoz on piccolo and the texts are read by Simpson, Winter, and animator Mandy Toderian.

"a lot of tiles (trivial scan)" is based on a set of rectangle substitution tilings explored by Chaim Goodman-Strauss in his seminal paper "Lots of aperiodic sets of tiles". A rectangle substitution tiling is generated by dissecting a rectangle into four smaller rectangles, which are then dissected into eight even smaller rectangles, and so on. The parenthetical in the title, "trivial scan", refers to the method of sonification. Sonic parameters of the music are determined by scanning and reading the tilings. The piece is quite open. As Simpson explains about Winter's music in the notes: "Although his music covers a wide range of forms, formats, and concerns, there seems to always be a careful consideration of the adaptability of his works... They can expand and contract to accommodate diverse instrumentations, durations, spaces, and situations... There is an understanding that the myriad of possibilities defined by the scores will never be exhausted; new constellations of materials, performers, and contexts will always exist." In the recording of "a lot of tiles (trivial scan)", this variability is explored through different combinations of electronic, synthesized, and acoustic sounds featuring Simpson and saxophonist Omar López, the dedicatee of the work.

NAS: Illmatic LP (GET 51297LP)
2022 repress. "In 1994, hip-hop was going through a painful growth spurt. Since N.W.A. and Ice-T's ascent in the late '80s, the rap game was no longer owned by the east coast. After the worldwide popularity of Dr. Dre's The Chronic in 1992, things were looking even worse for hip-hop's hometown. The east coast/west coast feud that would indirectly claim the lives of Biggie and Pac was still in its infancy, but New York needed a shot in the arm. And as soon as the first lines of 'N.Y. State of Mind' kick in, bolstered by perhaps DJ Premier's darkest beat of all time, the entire east coast breathed a collective sigh of relief. God's son had arrived. Backed by an absolute all-star cast of New York's top-shelf producers -- Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip, and a youngster named L.E.S. -- the album never lets up. Serious to a fault, and lyrically dense to an extent that has possibly never been matched, the 20-year old Nas stood on the shoulders of his predecessors and proudly proclaimed, 'Don't f*** with the east? we are back.' It was a dark, hard record, made for heads in New York, not teeny-boppers in Des Moines. There were no dance beats, no crossover love songs. Just boom-bap and rhymes, skills, and heart."

DEEE-LITE: World Clique LP (GET 52729LP)
2022 repress. "Sometimes a single is released that reaches such dizzying heights of success that it becomes a pinnacle of the decade they're indelibly tied to. 'Groove Is In The Heart' by dance-house trio Deee-Lite is one such single. The infectiously quirky, and eminently danceable track is prominently based around samples of 'Bring Down The Birds' by Herbie Hancock, and 'Get Up' by Vernon Burch, among many others, (Courtesy of dual producers DJs Dmitry and Towa Tei) paired with top-tier guest contributions from JB's veterans Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, background vocals from Parliament-Funkadelic's own Bootsy Collins, and even a guest rap from Q-Tip, not to mention frontwoman Lady Miss Kier's own siren-like vocals. All disparate and disconnected elements, but ones that would come together to form dancehall greatness, and chart-topping success worldwide for Deee-Lite. 'Groove Is In The Heart' managed to reach #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but excelled at its best on the Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it reached to the #1 spot. On top of its success in America it was a smash internationally, climbing the heights of the charts in the UK, Canada, Australia, and a variety of other countries. It remained in heavy rotation for much of 1990 on MTV as well. As the decades went on, 'Groove Is In The Heart' would be ranked among the greatest dance tracks of all time, as well as one of the greatest songs of the 1990s by VH1, Pitchfork, Buzzfeed, and many more. 'Groove Is In The Heart' was a potent single for Deee-Lite to lead with, but the album bearing it was nothing to slouch at either. The group's debut record, 1990's World Clique was released to major commercial and critical success, owing just as much to its addictive hybrid of seductive retro aesthetics, modern dancefloor flair, and esoteric, socially conscious messaging, on the back of celebratory club staples like 'Power Of Love', 'Good Beat', 'E.S.P.', and of course 'Groove Is In The Heart'. World Clique would reach top 20 charts in the US, UK, and Canada in sales, as well as earn rave reviews from NME, Chicago Sun-Times, Rolling Stone, and Slant Magazine, who called it an 'essential pop album'."

2014 release. Originally released in 1980. "Hailing from the late seventies through 1980 originally, this has a state of the art Blackbeard mix from Dennis Bovell, production of the Well Pack Band from Winston Edwards and stands as a convincing album -- which goes some way to explain the advanced popularity entire dub sets went on to experience after punk's early love affair with sufferer's reggae. The vibes here are good, the titles great and while some of the themes may not be entirely dread, the playing is all high caliber and the one-drop dubs are very well crafted."

VA: Step Forward Youth: Roots Masters from the "Punky Reggae Party" LP (VPGSRL 7059LP)
2018 release. "1976 saw the explosion of punk rock and it's unlikely championing of reggae in the UK and beyond. Through a 12-track LP compilation of essential recordings, Step Forward Youth takes a look at the reggae of the punk rock era in England and its resulting globalization in the late 1970s. The set collects both hit Jamaican reggae originals such as Culture's iconic 'Two Sevens Clash' with influential underground sides like Keith Hudson's 'Turn The Heater On' and obscure roots reggae heat like Barry Ford Band's 'Rebel' to provide a soundtrack for a key moment in music history. Other artists featured include Dr. Alimantado (pictured on the album's cover), Lee Perry, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, Michael Rose, Prince Far I, and others. The extensive 4,500-word liner notes by Noel Hawks contextualize the origins of the movement by exploring social, cultural, and economic factors and how popular music changed as a result." Also features Junior Murvin, Jah Stitch, Tappa Zukie, and Aggrovators.

FAKHR, ROGER: Fine Anyway LP (HAB 016LP)
2022 repress; LP version. "Beautiful mélange of folk, jazz and sound from Lebanon. Recorded in late 1970s Beirut by Rogér Fakhr who at the time also played guitar for Ziad Rahbani and Fairouz. Rogér Fakhr is a musician from Lebanon. He recorded these songs in the late 1970s in Beirut (and some during a brief exile in Paris). Some were circulated on hand copied cassettes among friends, others like Had To Come Back Wet were never released. His music effortlessly combines folk with touches of jazz and soul. He wrote, composed and arranged all songs. While working on his own music he also played for Ziad Rahbani, Fairouz and other musicians. When we first heard Roger's music we were blown away! The music was a mixture of folk with touches of other genres. Maybe one could also refer to it as 'singer-songwriter', since all of the songs were Roger's own compositions. Songs of unique beauty both musically as well as lyrically. At the same time they gave me the feeling of them being somehow time and space isolated capsules. Nothing really revealed, where they could've been recorded and without knowing it was Beirut, my first guess maybe would have rather been California, sometime in the 1970s. The immersive effect of his compositions and voice are just incredible. I was stunned and proposed Roger to work on a re-release, which he politely declined, saying he had no interest in this music being reissued."

VA: Loving On The Flipside 2LP (NA 5134LP)
2022 restock. "21 rare and unreleased tracks. Long overlooked ballads from the flip sides of the funk 45s in the now-again vaults. We at Now-Again unearthed so much information about the bands that recorded the definitive disco and modern soul contained in our recently launched Soul Cal anthology that we decided we had no choice but to release an album and a book at the same time. Well, following that line, the music contained on Loving On The Flip Side music is too damn good to be anonymously relaunched, decades after musical visionaries blended the best of heavy funk and sweet soul into a unified whole. And simply telling the stories of these vocalists and bands without allowing their lovelorn pleas to be heard again wasn't an option. Thus, Loving On The Flip Side again offers the enthused a chance to listen to, read about and reflect on another great burst of black American creativity: the creation of the sublime genre we like to call 'sweet funk.' It seems laughable to skip past Thomas East's 'Slipping Around' 7' for the cheesy funk of 'Just A Trip,' or to listen obsessively to Lou Ragland's instrumental funk on the Hot Chocolate LP and ignore his indolent-yet-stirring 'We Had True Love.' Yet we did just that, until we first heard the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's beautiful two-sider nearly ten years back. This was the record that set Loving On The Flip Side in motion, as the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's two songs precipitated the sweet funk genre: the dichotomy of Funky Heavy's skull snapping rhythm section and the teenage Dears' angelic harmonies didn't sound like anything we'd heard before. That discovery set off a decade long search for the band and culminated in their discovery, the documenting of their stories, the emergence of their master tapes and the inclusion of their songs on Loving On The Flip Side. The excitement we felt while listening to the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's masterworks forced us back into the field, in search of other sweet funk swooners and beat-heavy ballads to round out this anthology. The opportunity to present anew such wondrous soul music made the exhaustive process that produced Loving On The Flip Side worthwhile, and allowed us to collect one-offs that escaped prior investigations into the deep funk and sweet soul genres."

CZARFACE: A Fistful Of Peril LP (SIL 001LP)
2022 repress; LP version. "Czarface (Wu-Tang Clan's Inspectah Deck & 7L & Esoteric) are back! Fresh off the heels of their collaboration with Marvel Comics, the trio continues to combine music and art with their latest release A Fistful Of Peril. The back story of this album begins in the summer while Deck and Esoteric were in the studio recording some new Czarface material. During this time Marvel Comics had reached out to Czarface wanting some music to soundtrack their Black Panther web series, promoting their breakout comic of the same name. This Marvel meeting spawned the lead track 'All in Together Now' and served as the primary inspiration for a fleshed-out album that nobody saw coming. The group camped out in the studio playing beats, talking comics, video games, and pop culture....what came about was A Fistful Of Peril. Starting the album off with the ARP keyboard odyssey of 'Electric Level 1' is like entering the vortex of color and light in Kubrick's 2001. The aptly titled 'Two In The Chest' showcases Deck & Eso's ability to deliver punchlines and pop culture references with ease over an exceptional bass and guitar combo. 'Czar Wars' has the two sparring back and forth bringing that 'X-Men/Danger Room' mentality that Deck often to refers to when in Czar-mode. Psycho Les of The Beatnuts steps in on 'Dust' while 'Lizard City' introduces 'Czarface Pajamas'. Yes you read that correctly. The off-kilter 'Steranko' has Meyhem Lauren and Rast join forces with Czarface as they weave their way through a mind-bending array of varying beats. Other features on the album are Conway on 'Machine, Man & Monster' and AOTP's Blacastan on 'Tarantulas'. Another one of the album's highlights is 'Dare Iz A Darkseid' which, along with 'Talk That Talk', is the perfect balance of wit and humor that make up the core of Czarface."

JANSCH, BERT: Jack Orion LP (SV 123LP)
2022 repress. "Jack Orion, Bert Jansch's third album, may have surprised some fans upon its 1966 release, as it features no original compositions by Jansch. While nearly all of the eight tracks (four of which include guitarist John Renbourn) are interpretations of traditional folk songs, Jansch's experimental approach breathes new life into this repertoire through his exploratory use of open tunings and passionate, gritty vocals. According to Melody Maker, 'his interpretations illuminate the songs from a completely new angle. As sung by him, with brilliant accompaniments, the brutal world that created the old ballads doesn't seem so very far off.' The ten-minute title song foreshadows the future through the past: with his sublime retelling of this dark tale of desire and revenge, Jansch embarks on a musical trajectory he would further develop with his group Pentangle. In 'Black Water Slide,' a haunting ballad he first heard from Anne Briggs, Jansch plants the seeds for future versions by Led Zeppelin and Sandy Denny. Jack Orion's unique combination of medieval themes and progressive arrangements would pave the way for the next wave of the British folk revival and beyond. This vinyl release has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes and features liner notes by Richie Unterberger."
