BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE: Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request CD (AUK 004CD) 2024 CD reprint; 2007 release. Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout -- like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels. Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish -- the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years. $8.39 EAN: 5024545460025 ROCK |

MILIO: Invisible Lands LP (ATMV 120LP) Milio is back on Atomnation with his third full-length album, Invisible Lands. It is the glorious result of an artistic journey in which the Dutchman has discovered new production skills and techniques so he can translate the rich fantasy world of his childhood into a musical form using only analogue sound. Milio has always been a synth magician who paints with sound. His house music has always been steeped in color, emotion and great craft, and is often created on-the-fly using analog hardware. In recent times he has impressed with his immersive live show, launched his own label VIAVIA and joined a new group A# with French II, Alberta Balsam, and Bastian Benjamin in order to further explore improvised live experiments. $20.79 EAN: 4062548091359 ELECTRONIC |

RUSSELL, ARTHUR: In The Light Of The Miracle: Remixes 12" (BEWITH 023EP) The very first commercial release of two legendary remixes of Arthur Russell's In The Light Of The Miracle. Both are widely regarded as transcendent masterpieces and very much befitting of the title "holy grails." At last, these jaw-dropping mixes are widely available to every Arthur fan in the world. This is musical perfection. The deep Loft classic "In The Light Of The Miracle" remained unreleased during Arthur's lifetime, finally discovered when Phillip Glass included the original version on Another Thought on Point Music in 1993. The story goes that Gilles Peterson heard the remixes on a visit to the Point Music offices and wanted to release them on Talkin' Loud. These remixes both extend and undeniably enhance the original, elevating it to new heights. The 13-minute remix on the A-side is by Danny Krivit and Tony Smith with editing duties performed by Tony Morgan. The "Ponytail Club Mix (Part 1 & 2)," produced by Tony Morgan in the mid-'90s, is in a more up-tempo style, with vocals higher in the mix, the BPM upped to 120 and the addition of a housey 4/4 kick drum. A 14-minute epic, you could say this is a more straight ahead "club-friendly" mix. It also has some really interesting vocal parts not used in the other versions, including some vocals from guest poet Allen Ginsberg. These remixes are part of the same original project that also produced the Another Thought album so it seems only right that they have a sleeve that matches. Simon Francis remastered the original audio for both tracks and Cicely Balston's precise cut for Alchemy at AIR Studios ensures this 12" well and truly slaps. The immaculate Record Industry pressing will ensure this incredibly sought-after treasure finds a home in many more collections, this and every year. $22.79 EAN: 4251804181266 ELECTRONIC |

MOORE, STEVE: Cursed Objects LP (BEWITH 163LP) Steve Moore returns to the library music fold and it's a total doozy: Cursed Objects is truly sensational prog-synth-wave, featuring epic electronic explorations with chamber music and symphonic flourishes. In keeping with the horror heat of the music contained within, this vinyl release is frighteningly limited, with just 500 pressed for the world. New York-based multi-instrumentalist/producer/film composer Steve Moore is probably best known for his synthesizer and bass guitar work as Zombi, together with Anthony Paterra. But he is also part of Miracle and Titan as well as being a prolific solo artist releasing music as Gianni Rossi, Lovelock, and under his own name. Steve released Cursed Objects for fresh library label Fold, which is run by ex-KPM head Paul Sandell. The LP opens by letting in "The Uninvited One." Calm and relaxed arpeggiated synths build around sweeping strings and plucked harp to create a mystical and hopeful feel. The title track sees dark synths merge and swell with a piano, string and harp melody that is dark, mysterious and brooding. "Evolutionary Steps" is an electro-synthwave track that builds with epic strings and beats, offering an expansive and dreamy approach with a mystical and driving rhythm. Next up, "The Icarus Feather" is daring, pulsing and cinematic synthwave that builds with arpeggiated synths to a hopeful end. "Daily Affirmations" offers calm and meditative ambient synths with plucked harp and strings for a reflective, peaceful, daydreamy feel. "Mesmer's Bauble" ushers in side two, its dark synth backing builds with plucked harp and strings building with a sense of unknown and dread; it's introspective and heartfelt. "Quiet Springs" is all mystical synths, harps and strings, building to an epic panoramic scope with a hopeful and poignant atmosphere. "Festival Of Samhain" presents a dark and brooding piano melody which builds with synths and strings to create a slow and desolate feel. "The Icarus Feather (Revisited)" is epic building synthwave with arpeggiated synths and strings and a driving rhythm. To close, "Shard Of Medusa" rides a serious and dark piano melody and, in concert with harp and strings, it creates a suspenseful and solemn atmosphere. For synths, Steve mostly used his trusty Prophet 6, as well as his Moog Minitaur and lots of Korg Polysix too. The album's cover was designed by Chris Stevenson. Mastering for this vinyl edition was overseen by Be With regular Simon Francis, and it was cut by the esteemed Cicely Balston at AIR Studios to be pressed in the Netherlands by Record Industry. $24.79 EAN: 4251804144124 ELECTRONIC |

BAHAMADIA: Kollage 2LP (BEWITH 166LP) 2024 repress. Bahamadia's 1996 debut album Kollage is rightly regarded as one of the greatest rap albums of the 1990s. For the first time ever, Be With presents the definitive double LP version of this eternal hip-hop classic, including the legendary "Path To Rhythm" which never appeared on the original LP or on vinyl, anywhere. An indelible vibe from start-to-finish, Kollage presents Bahamadia's swirling rhymes delivered with an irresistibly butter flow and razor-sharp assuredness over a steady slew of smoothed-out, jazzed-up, blunted beats. Achingly cool and effortlessly funky throughout, it's an absolute must for true '90s hip-hop fanatics. The entire Kollage project was recorded at D&D Studios and the ties to Gang Starr are keenly felt, with DJ Premier producing five tracks in addition to the killer songs Guru had already produced with her. Working with the cream of the mid-'90s East Coast sound, Kollage is, accordingly, a record that demonstrates a varied musical taste with disparate influences. With intelligent, poetic lyricism and a laconic verbal style bursting with both warm texture and deceptive energy, Bahamadia's flow was as inspired by Aretha and Nancy Wilson as it was Q-Tip, Schoolly D and Lady B. Incredibly, only the European and Japanese CD versions of Kollage were released with the brilliantly breezy "Path To Rhythm," featuring Ursula Rucker. Whilst ostensibly a "bonus track," it's anything but. Very much in sonic conversation with KRS-One's stretched-out sleeper classic "Higher Level," it's absolutely essential. Somewhat predictably, whilst Kollage was released to significant critical acclaim, it suffered from disappointing sales. In the intervening years -- and for far too long -- it was a criminally underrated record, an increasingly hidden gem. This Be With double LP reissue has been mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis, cut by Cicely Balston, and pressed at Record Industry. It's too bold and beautiful to remain overlooked and underserved. $31.39 EAN: 4251804144131 HIPHOP |

In addition to a large number of Krautrock bands such as Message, Krokodil, Midnight Circus, Dschinn, and Orange Peel, progressive musicians from England (J.C. CLUSTER & ENO: Cluster & Eno LP (BB 029LP)
2024 resotck; Bureau B's 2009 reissue. LP version. Originally recorded and released in 1977 on Sky Records, the first collaborative album by Brian Eno and Cluster was the first ambient record produced in Germany, and is considered the seminal, defining work of the genre. Brian Eno was certainly instrumental in creating and popularizing the concept of "ambient music" -- but it was not his invention alone. The German musicians Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius (Cluster) were brothers in spirit. As so often in music, the idea of ambient was in the air -- both Eno and Cluster experimenting with the form in the 1970s, rendering any debate as to who influenced who redundant. What is certain, is that Brian Eno attended a Cluster concert in Hamburg in 1975, strategically positioning himself in the front row. Sure enough, he was invited on stage to jam with the band and, after the show, the participants arranged to meet up again. They did so two years later at the Old Weserhof in Forst, the domicile of the German duo. Eno and Cluster spent three weeks in Conny Plank's studio, resulting in two albums: Cluster & Eno and After The Heat (1978). In the liner notes, Asmus Tietchens (who also plays on the record along with Can's Holger Czukay) writes: "Clearly, all three musicians inspired each other during their three weeks together without any clash of personalities. Nevertheless, some tracks sound more like Cluster, some more like Eno. So it made perfect sense to collect the tracks with a Cluster flavor on Cluster & Eno." The importance of this record can never be overstated, nor can its elegance of diverse forms be matched. From Indian sitar and tamboura, to synth warbles and airy tributes to Western groove, it is a rare glimpse at what happens when masters meet.

DEUTSCHE WERTARBEIT: Deutsche Wertarbeit LP (BB 047LP) 2024 repress; LP version. 180 gram pressing. There are times when the name of a musical project is in perfect harmony with the sounds emanating from it. And there are times when it is not. Take the 1981 album Deutsche Wertarbeit by keyboarder and composer Dorothea Raukes, which is rather an example of the latter. No stomping of military marches, as the title may imply, but six beautiful synthesizer treasures gathered together on the only solo album she would release, artfully unifying the so-called Düsseldorf School (Kraftwerk, etc.), the Berliner School (Tangerine Dream, etc.) and elements of Jean Michel Jarre's music with the sounds of the inceptive 1980s. From the hypnotic to the cosmic, sometimes pulsating, sometimes evincing saccharine melancholy. The cool, almost technical artwork does not really fit the warm, sensitive music, either. Dorothea Raukes was not exactly an unknown quantity when the album appeared. She had been playing keyboards and writing for the Düsseldorf rock band Streetmark for years. The group -- as was typical of the period -- operated on democratic principles, which meant that she was never quite able to follow through on her own musical ideas one hundred percent. A solo album, however, would allow her to do just that. One of the reasons why it turned out to be a purely electronic album was Raukes' sponsorship deal with Korg, giving her access to the full range of the company's gear. Listening to Deutsche Wertarbeit, those familiar with the history of Streetmark will find themselves reminded of Wolfgang Riechmann's solo LP Wunderbar (BB 027CD/LP), which appeared three years earlier and traced a similar musical pattern. Wolfgang Riechmann himself had been a member of Streetmark not all that long ago. Nonetheless, the two projects were entirely separate and had no immediate influence on each other. $19.39 EAN: 4047179908313 ELECTRONIC |

HELDON: Un Reve Sans Consequence Speciale LP (BB 329LP)
2024 restock; LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale, originally released in 1976. Heldon's Richard Pinhas has never been shy of pinpointing his influences while, at the same time, making music that is noticeably distinct from any of his designated sources. He has, for instance, made it clear that a significant font of inspiration was Robert Fripp's guitar style and melding of rock music with cutting-edge electronics (especially in collaboration with Brian Eno). Indeed, Heldon's fifth album, Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale, was named after a live bootleg of a King Crimson concert. Pinhas first met Fripp in 1974, and the pair became friends and have remained in contact ever since. Pinhas was even offered a deal with E.G. Records, the company that oversaw King Crimson alongside other successful groups like Roxy Music and ELP. "That was a dream," says Pinhas. "But when you are 22, you are in a hurry. They asked me to wait one or two years before joining the team. I couldn't wait two years!" Instead, Pinhas launched his own label, Disjuncta, which he later sold to purchase the Moog synthesizer that would make a huge difference to Heldon's sound. Heldon's output also drew from radical science fiction (Philip K. Dick, Norman Spinrad, etc.) as well as philosophy: the sleeve features a quote from Pierre Klossowski's Nietzsche and the Vicious Circle (1969). Heldon never represented a mere facsimile of Pinhas's musical touchstones: King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, or Frank Zappa. Heldon was always its own beast and by 1976 it was thriving and roaring like never before. More work was being completed in a proper studio, the Moog helped strengthen the sound and direction, and Pinhas's rotating cast of collaborators was solidifying into something resembling a regular lineup, with François Auger on drums and Patrick Gauthier on synthesizers. The result was a darker, heavier, and more intense sound. The LP opens with the prog-gone-skronk onslaught of "Marie Virginie C", sounding rather like Robert Fripp being sliced into bloody chunks in Thurston Moore's basement. Auger is the star of "Elephanta", in all its Moog-assisted polyrhythmic glory. On side two, "MVC II" offers six minutes of sinister dystopian squelch rock. It's followed by "Toward The Red Line", an epic piece conceivably serving to connect the dots between Hawkwind's most freeform passages and the Detroit techno innovations of the coming decade.

SUPERSEMPFFT: Roboterwerke CD (BB 442CD) After introducing listeners to the techno-tropical pop of Supersempfft via an essential reissue of their stargazing sophomore LP Metaluna, those surefooted folks at Bureau B beam back a couple of years to bring listeners the Hessen outfit's outrageous debut. The collaborative vehicle careers through the cosmos like a high-performance clown car, disguising daring chord progressions, technical innovation and a heap of hooks behind its cartoon chassis, and taking lucky listeners along for the joyride. Operating at the unlikely nexus between creative studio and sixth form common room, and fusing all the expertise of the former with commercial disinterest of the latter, Supersempfft served as the multidisciplinary moniker for a trio of childhood friends whose separate skills combined perfectly for their high-concept high jinks. The prodigious musical talent of Dieter Kolb, augmented and elevated by Franz Knüttel's electronic innovation, provided the ideal medium for Franz Aumüller's wacky world building, which made up the lyrical thrust and visual flair of the project. Roboterwerke, both the name of this 1979 LP and the revolutionary drum machine created by Knüttel, tells the story of a mellow tuba-toting frog (apparently an avatar of Kolb), who is technologically transformed by a mad scientist (a Professor Knüttels, as it happens) into a star surfing superhero. So far, so far out -- especially considering the lurid, lysergic lunacy of the comic book cover art -- but this slapstick silliness also serves as sleight of hand, a daft disguise to keep these sublime sounds away from the squares. $12.39 EAN: 4015698421231 ELECTRONIC |

DUMBO TRACKS: Move With Intention LP (BB 445LP)
LP version. Dumbo Tracks returns with a second album Move With Intention -- the anticipated follow up to 2022's eponymous debut. Philipp Janzen and collaborators deliver a varied collection of nine zoned-out grooves direct from Dumbo Studio in Cologne, with vocal contributions from Portable, Ada, Marker Starling, Rubee Fegan, and nothhingspecial. Looking back to his musical upbringing, Philipp Janzen switched up the recording process from the first record to incorporate more of a live band element. The result is a more eclectic sound which allowed more freedom to experiment, while keeping the collaborative spirit that is a vital Dumbo Tracks trademark. The genesis of the record began in Italy, where Philipp and co-producer Julian Stetter traveled to jam out ideas on modular synths over the course of a few days. These ideas served as the basis for more instrumental tracks back at Dumbo Studio, where Philipp invited friends to develop the tracks further within a live dynamic. For the final phase of the record, Philipp enlisted the artistry of five vocalists: spoken word frontwoman Rubee Fegan, Canadian singer songwriter Marker Starling, house romantic Portable, Bonn-based haunted pop artist nothhingspecial and Hamburg's techno visionary Ada. The title track sees Philipp and crew slow the tempo down to a molasses dreamscape, a beatdown groove that's joined by Paris-residing artist Portable. It all makes for a gloriously eclectic album, an anarchic pop record that follows its own rules. Move With Intention is both electronic yet alive, motorik and pastoral, filled with dancefloor grooves and a krautrock swagger. In this sense the intention is clear: to respectfully rip up the rule book and keep moving forward.

FRISCHAUF, CONNY: Kenne Keine Tone CD (BB 465CD) After Die Drift, Kenne Keine Tone is the second studio album by the Vienna-based artist Conny Frischauf. Moving between pop and experiment, she embarks on a search for the momentary, the transitions and sonorous threshold spaces, creating a fascinating sound laboratory with Kenne Keine Tone that invites listeners to readjust their listening habits. Things are not what they seem to be. It is in this spirit that the artist guides us into her synaesthetic sound laboratory in which she acousmatically examines worldly phenomena as sonic events and combines them with delicate pop references. Stones, wind, water and other phenomena thus turn into audible miracles. In the sixteen tracks of her latest album, Frischauf is playing with our senses. Field recordings, carefully microphoned percussion instruments, aerophones, clapping hands and cosey synth sounds become finely balanced antagonists on this album, digging deep into auditory canals. The album is less about clear linear temporal sequences than about the spatial assembly of various possible meanings. Frischauf consciously awards this kind of independence to the sounds and ideas on the album. It is the reduction that makes a certain understatement reverberate on Kenne Keine Tone, and yet this restraint merely conceals Frischauf's passion for sound. Facing such a multitude of ideas, it's striking that the album remains as personal, casual and melodic as it does. A distinct groove emerges and occasionally invites listeners to dance. $12.39 EAN: 4015698863444 ELECTRONIC |

FITE & GUNTER CHRISTMANN, NIKLAS: insisting CD (CVSD 111CD) Two brilliant improvisers, two distinct generations, one close-listening encounter. Swedish guitarist (and, elsewhere, banjo player) Niklas Fite brings a flinty intimacy to his playing, a dry punch that reminds us that the guitar is a percussion instrument. One of the great figures in European improvised music, based in Hannover, Germany, Günter Christmann gained notoriety as a trombonist starting in the very early 1970s, but he was equally engaged in playing double bass and cello and has in recent years devoted himself mainly to the latter. On insisting, Christmann plays cello exclusively. Together, on eight tracks, the two players delve deeply into their collective sound spectrum, exploring timbre and timing, dynamics and dissonance. Like the different iterations of Christmann's variable ensemble Vario (one of which CvsD has documented on the CD Vario 34-3), this is music with intensity and integrity, hardcore improvised music, action-packed minute gestures concentrated within a sweeping overall field of sound and energy. Recorded over two days in 2019.
A statement from Niklas Fite: "the breath is of essential importance in great music. music that never gives that moment of exhalation -- of relief -- suffocates the listener. on the other hand: music that only exhales will also suffocate the listener. the inhalation -- the buildup of energy -- and the exhalation -- the release -- is the game we want to play. and perhaps more importantly: the correct timing of these, which can never be calculated or analyzed, but only felt. a third, and very important aspect of breath in music is the holding of the breath. to freeze in suspense, in anticipation of what will come, and in reflection of that which has been. these are sensations that can be felt in great music, but the truth of the music is far more complex than what I so far have described, and probably more complex than anyone can describe." $9.79 UPC: 759624575677 ROCK |

AYLER TRIO, ALBERT: Spiritual Unity LP (ESPDISK 1002LP) 2024 repress. LP version. 180 gram virgin vinyl, with original artwork restored. Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk' famous (or, in some people's eyes/ears, infamous). Mr. Ayler had already recorded in Europe and, in February '64, in New York, but this was the first album on which neither he nor his collaborators held back. It was also ESP's first jazz recording. Spiritual Unity presented a new improvisation paradigm: looser structure, less regard for standard pitch, and no obligation to present a regular beat. Ayler's sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time. Sometimes it was expressed in squalls of untempered sound, sometimes in outbursts of poignant spontaneous melody. Meanwhile, under and around the leader's unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments. $17.79 UPC: 825481011020 JAZZ |

ROLIN, MATTHEW J.: The Dreaming Bridge 2LP (FTR 586LP) 2024 . Clear vinyl. "... The Ohio-based guitarist's artistic leaps in recent years are rivaled only by those of Daniel Bachman, another once-precocious player formerly in the John Fahey / Jack Rose mold who has over the years transcended the idiom to create his own singular, deeply personal music. Rolin's latest LP, the double album The Dreaming Bridge, makes similar strides. For many practitioners of this style, the first and perhaps most challenging feat is to escape the gargantuan shadow of Fahey. Some do this by adding other instruments or field recordings to their DADGAD ruminations; some opt to play electric. Of course, Fahey did all of those things, too. Better still to have not been directly influenced by Fahey in the first place: Rolin's initial embrace of the acoustic guitar was inspired not by Fahey himself, but rather by Fahey-influenced guitarists like polymath Jim O'Rourke and trickster prodigy Ryley Walker. This vicarious influence is exemplified by Rolin's distinctive, at times irreverent approach to guitar soli. While the influence of Walker's nimble 12-string probing is evident on tunes like Rolin's impressionistic '10:30 AM,' and while the guitarist's patiently unfolding, contemplative 'Weeping Willow' indeed recalls O'Rourke's masterpiece Happy Days, Rolin remains very much his own man, with his own idiosyncratic approach. This is clear from the first notes of The Dreaming Bridge's opening track 'Pinhole,' which introduces Rolin's affinity for shimmering, almost choral, reverb, the effect doubling as a compositional element. Similarly, on the overtone-rich 'Drown,' Rolin's virtuosic playing is practically a duet with its own echo, an effect deployed not to obscure, but to buoy. This deep attention to atmosphere serves a crucial function on The Dreaming Bridge, which sparkles throughout with a strident, Zen-like focus Then there are the tunes themselves. Terrific tunes! Like William Tyler -- another possible influence -- Rolin, despite largely working from the necessarily limited palette of instrumental solo guitar music, thinks like a songwriter. This more traditional approach can be heard on tracks like 'Moonlight' and 'Backyard Blues' which follow a compositional logic complete with verses and choruses. Rolin performs these compositions beautifully; as a player he is dexterous and dynamic, with a light and agile touch reminiscent of early Will Ackerman or Alex De Grassi. Album highlight 'Hallucinations' features saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi's keening, double tracked reed work, which at times simulates the sound of two violins playing cat and mouse between the stereo channels..." --James Toth Also features Entourage, Shadowfax, and Jen Powers. $24.39 UPC: 769791978423 ROCK A1. LEE & KING TUBBY, BUNNY: Brass Rockers LP (JRLP 037LP)
2024 repress. LP version. King Tubby and producer Bunny "Striker" Lee are intertwined in the birth of dub music. After discovering a mistake that became a "serious joke," they went on to release the first pressings of this new musical genre named "Dub Music." Tubby's vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny's vast catalog of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard -- the remix/version cuts to an existing vocal tune. Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 28th 1941 and grew up in the High Holborn Street area of downtown Kingston. He studied electronics at Kingston's National Technical College and also did two correspondence courses from the U.S.A. When he had qualified, Tubby began repairing radios and other electrical appliances in a shack in the backyard of his mother's home. His work in the early days included winding transformers and building amplifiers for Kingston's Sound Systems. Tubby built his first Sound System in 1957 playing jazz and rhythm & blues at local weddings and birthday parties. His reputation as a man who knew and understood both electronics and music grew steadily, and as the '60s drew to a close, Tubby purchased his own basic two-track equipment. He installed this alongside his dub-cutting machine, a homemade mixing console, and his impressive collection of jazz albums in the back bedroom of his home at 18 Dromilly Avenue, which he christened his music room.

WHITEFIELD & FORCED MEDITATION, JJ: The Infinity of Nothingness CD (JMAN 144CD) Having plied his trade around the world for more than three decades, German guitarist, bandleader and musical explorer Jan Whitefield has always instilled in his craft a natural aesthetic of authenticity, a key component which has seen him amass a sizeable and varied catalogue of material which has remained timeless where some of his contemporaries have faded away. In the early '90s, as various UK bands were signed up by sizeable labels and enjoyed even mainstream chart success in the acid jazz and rare groove boom, Jan and his brother Max formed the Poets Of Rhythm, self-releasing their own uncompromisingly hard-edged take on '70s street funk on the then completely unfashionable 7" single format, forerunning the deep funk scene by almost a decade. 30 years on, in spite of a legion of retro-focused bands having followed in their wake, few have yet to come close to matching the energy and spirit of those early Poets 45s. Since then, Jan has applied himself to all manner of new incarnations and innovative side-projects, releasing further funk surveys as the Whitefield Brothers before leading his own band under the pseudonym Karl Hector, with releases on labels such as Stones Throw, Daptone, Ninja Tune, Mo'Wax, Strut and more. An avid music lover, explorer and record collector extraordinaire, Whitefield's music has effortlessly absorbed his expanding interests along the way, particularly drawing influence from Ethiopian jazz and West African funk and highlife, as well as Kraut-rock and ambient via his Rodinia alter-ego. More recently, Whitefield has begun to venture into the astral planes of what's now commonly referred to as "spiritual jazz," and this is very much where he is manifesting on The Infinity Of Nothingness. A set of mature, delicate and meditative orchestrations, like much of Whitefield's best work the album is studiously true to its key influences -- and in this instance the twin figureheads of Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders are particularly preeminent -- but also completely avoids falling into a trap of mere tribute or facsimile. With subtle yet diverse accents of hip hop, library and the avant garde appearing wholly unobtrusively, the album is unified by a marked trance-like feel. With The Infinity Of Nothingness Whitefield achieves that exceptionally rare feat of creating music that is not only worthy of sitting alongside that of his overarching influences, but will also stand up with it against the tests of time. $10.79 EAN: 5036468201449 JAZZ |

VA: Skinhead Shuffle CD (KSCD 091CD) The early reggae sound that came out of Jamaica between the years 1968 and 1971 became the soundtrack to the skinhead movement in the UK. Not only was the music embraced but also the dress style of the Jamaican Rude Boys. The skinhead style started around 1968 and by the following year 1969, had become the style and fashion of the British teenagers. The uniform of the skinheads consisted of boots, braces, button down shirts and jeans and the upbeat reggae sounds seemed to match the style perfectly. The tempo of the music in Jamaica had previously slowed down from the more up tempo beat of ska to the calmer pace of beat called rock steady. Some say this was to match the extreme heat wave that was hitting the island between 1966 and 1968. But that period had now passed and the evolution of the reggae beat had again found a new pulse to hang its songs by. A more up tempo beat that all Jamaicans, British youths and various pockets of people around the world could groove to. Kingston Sounds have selected a cross section of tunes from those heady times, so sit back and enjoy some of the tunes the youths were listening to when the Skinhead Shuffle was all the rage. Featuring Max Romeo, Roland Alphonso & Don Lee, The Hotrod All Stars, Winston Williams, Winston Scotland, Bunny Lee All Stars, Doreen Schaffer, U Roy, Val Bennet, Lee Perry, Roland Alphonso, Winston Francis, Slim Smith & Doreen Schaffer, Vin Gordon, Alva Lewis, Glen Adams, and Dave Barker. $9.99 EAN: 5060135763763 WORLD |

WEVAL: The Weight 2LP (KOM 396LP)
2024 repress; double LP version, includes download. Straight in the wake of their eponymous debut LP (KOMP 131CD/KOM 352LP, 2016), Weval return to Kompakt with their sophomore album, The Weight, breaking their pop-mellow, nostalgia-friendly style further out in the open as they arrive "at this place again were everything felt spontaneous, new and exciting, like we had in the beginning". Orbiting around that ever-luminous yet wistful melodic halo that surrounds their music, this second full-length effort sweeps an extra-wide and languidly woven palette of emotions and moods, making for a uniquely ambitious and generously colored mosaic of sound. If the recording sessions "often started grumpy and emotionless" by Harm and Merijn's own admission, the pair was "surprised by the joy it gave us, which can be compared to the emotions we felt back in the first days of making music together"; subsequently reconnecting with that fresh, naïve feeling of "absolute creative freedom" they were after. The album is also the fruit of a whole new working process for them -- more playful and unpredictable -- which saw them switch from "guitars lying around to piano, onto our own synths and the most cheap quirky toy synths you can imagine", and involved "recording all of our own samples, voice and almost every instrument out of the box. We've always wanted a narrative for the album, and finding the right order perhaps took the most effort." As a whole, The Weight breathes with that transformative richness, free of limits and rules. Amidst this collection of songs and instrumentals that live by Weval's singularly positive take on music -- one that can "lift you up, and make you feel hopeful without being necessarily straight out 'happy'" as they define it, the title-track and lead single stays true to the duo's dynamic approach, putting on a fine balance of floor and dream inducing adaptability that sound engineer David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The XX) subtly made palpable. There's heavy showers of funk drops pouring from endless bars of thunderstorm clouds and laid-back riffs beating a restrained poolside-party kind of pulse, but also sensual vocals rising from beneath the sheets and rueful polaroid-filtered ambiences to soundtrack all possible moments in life -- from the most euphoric to those when music seems the only viable healing potion. Weightless and airy, yet texturally dense and widely magnetic overall, The Weight is a synthesis of the duo's multi-angle take on electronics: blissed-out, heartening and infinitely free.

DORA, DELPHINE: Le Grand Passage LP (LOVE 131LP) Delphine Dora is a prolific composer, improviser and musician who has released on a plethora of labels including Recital, Morc, Sloow Tapes, Feeding Tube, Okraïna and more. Le Grand Passage is a stunning set of songs for piano and voice, recorded in one take without overdubs or edits, contrasting gilded piano motifs with improvised and abstracted vocal expressions, channeling the divine. Delphine Dora was nearing the end of a three-day prepared piano residency when a technician stepped in to tune her grand piano for her final performance. He removed the objects from the strings and fixed the pitch, leaving Dora with a freshly tuned instrument. Mesmerized by its new sound, she proceeded to switch on her recorder and pour out her soul, channeling, in her own words, "something greater than myself." The result is some of the most unusual but elevated material the prolific composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist has ever recorded, rooted in a deep understanding of European musical history but willing to push at its boundaries, questioning the earthly logic of life and death, asceticism and impiety. Baroque paradigms bleed into fragile, introspective mantras, expressed through a made-up language of existential yearning and channeled through piano and voice. It's music that caresses the sublime, made without any premeditation. Dora conjures affecting, plainspoken poetry, like a bedside diary written in a hypnagogic, delirious state: a stream-of-unconsciousness, channeling the beyond. The album title connects to a book dedicated to French philosopher and activist Simone Weil, who famously pored over global religions to ascertain spiritual truths. To Weil, meditation was a passage to access mystical experience, or a bridge between humanity and divinity. In Dora's hands, this idea is a corridor between herself and the listener, a liminal place where she's able to address feelings without making anything explicit. The title, of course, also refers to life, its impermanence, finitude, and fragility, presenting the complex, multidimensionality of being through one of the most undiluted, unbridled set of songs imaginable. JONNINE: Southside Girl LP (LOVE 134LP) The fourth solo album from Jonnine Standish of HTRK, her debut for Modern Love. A beachside fever-dream in 11 parts, mixed and mastered by Amir Shoat and cut by Rashad Becker. Recorded in Woollahra, Eora/Sydney and Dandenong Ranges, Naarm/Melbourne. Additional percussion by Maria Moles. Comes with four postcards.
"An apartment by the suburban seaside. A pact with the ocean, popping candy, night trains, the lethargic limbo of summertime from Boxing Day to New Year's Eve. Trinkets are dainty, delicate, pretty, and cracked. Sunned sand and chilly bay winds, daytime sex, gothic teen photo shoots at a cliff's edge. Scratches of the beach scrub, cozy after-hours clockmakers, a purring cat and the faint melody of distant piano lessons floating behind the sounds of washing dishes. As much a series of sensory snapshots of the past and impressions of a peculiarly peaceful present moment." --Jonnine, 2024 $23.39 UPC: N/A ELECTRONIC |

DEMDIKE STARE: Junk/Tuff Crew 7" (LOVE 135EP) Demdike Stare return to Modern Love with their first release on the label since 2018. The A-side features vocals from Alice Merida Richards. Edition of 500 copies, comes with a holographic Modern Love sticker. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker. Both cuts find Demdike in wickedly rambunctious mood, the A-side "Junk" weaving gated filters and squashed subs into the gynoid vocal delivery of Alice Merida Richards, formerly of baroque pop band Virginia Wing, and here giving it a full Nico via Trish Keenan thing. Imagine the Chain Reaction label doing monochrome, mutant pop, and you're just about there. "Tuff Crew" on the flip sees the duo panel-beating sheet noise, gnashing drums and hyperpop hiccups into a seething industrial dancehall swivel made to swarm warehouses with its dizzying stereo diffusions. Hands down some of their best gear, play extra loud for the full madness. $13.99 UPC: N/A ELECTRONIC |

PANDORAS, THE: It's About Time LP (MR 460LP) 40 years after its original release date, Munster reissues this essential '80s garage punk gem as part of a series of releases celebrating Bomp! 50th anniversary. The Pandoras' debut album, It's About Time, is one of the first and best efforts of authentic 1960's-styled garage punk to emerge from the revival scene. This reissue includes three bonus tracks and liner notes by Gravedigger V's John Hanrattie. The Pandoras really got started back in 1982 when triple threat Paula Pierce (guitar, vocals and songwriter) met singer and guitarist Debbie Mendoza at Chaffey College Rancho Cucamonga, one of those dozens of small communities that make up the greater Los Angeles area. According to stories told around the campfire, Paula had posted an advertisement on the bulletin board inside the college's cafeteria. The ad was both simple and direct: Wanted: female musician to jam with. As legend has it, the ad also stressed a keen interest in '60s garage punk music. Debbie answered Paula's ad, and soon the two girls were bringing guitars to school and holding impromptu jam sessions between classes. A little later that year, Paula brought in Gwynne Kahn on keyboards and second guitar, and Debbie convinced drummer Casey Gomez to join. People who were around at the time pinpoint December 1982 as the official beginning of the Pandoras as a band. The Pandoras didn't waste any time getting down to business. They started gigging regularly, and their repertoire of tasty garage nuggets expanded substantially, fueled both by Paula's talented songwriting and also no doubt by her relationship with Unclaimed frontman Shelley Ganz and his extensive knowledge of obscure '60s gems. $19.99 EAN: 8435008846015 WORLD |

KALIYUGA EXPRESS: Occult Future LP (REPOSE 140LP) Limited blood-orange-and-red marbled vinyl. Housed in a gloss finished color outer sleeve with double sided insert. Following 2023's much lauded Kaliyuga Express debut Warriors & Masters, Nolla (Finnish psych/space rockers) and Mike Vest (Maximalist guitar guru, Bong, Blown Out, Drunk In Hell, Artifacts & Uranium, Modoki, Tomoyuki Trio, Mienakunaru) combine their visions once again and explore dark futuristic mindscapes. They set their sights to the looming eons and gaze through an occult lens. Inspired by classic space rock, driving hypnotic krautrock and bleak synth soundscapes. The ground was laid in improvised Nolla sessions and further ascended with gloomy prophecies and lyrical explorations by Ilkka and Otto. With Ohto's assertive drums and Teemu's solid guitars the canvas was set for Mike to paint his transcendent multilayered guitars. Bleak and overbearing sights are explored, but the future holds a speck of hope if you are prepared to embrace the darkness. For fans of: Hawkwind, Can, Sun Dial, Bevis Frond, space rock, Krautrock. CONNORS & DAVID GRUBBS, LOREN: Evening Air LP (RM 4226LP) Evening Air is the result Loren Connors and David Grubbs's first trip to the recording studio in the two decades since their first duo album, Arborvitae (Häpna). Arborvitae stood out for its spell-binding, utterly unhurried meshing of electric guitar (Connors) and piano (Grubbs). With this long-awaited return, Connors and Grubbs take turns trading off on piano and guitar, with Grubbs at the keyboard for the two gently expansive pieces on the first side and Connors taking over the instrument for three gorgeous miniatures on the flip, including an album-closing and perfectly heart-stopping version of Connors's and Suzanne Langille's "Child." The album's wildcard is "It's Snowing Onstage," which finds the two locking horns with two electric guitars before Loren blew the minds of all present in the studio by unexpectedly switching to drums. Loren Connors is one-of-a-kind, one of a handful of deservedly storied musical greats gracing listeners with their presence, and with Evening Air David Grubbs again demonstrates that he's a stellar musician who also ranks among the most simpatico of collaborators. $18.39 UPC: 764227647195 ROCK |

VILLAIN, CARMEN: Music From The Living Monument LP (STSLJN 423LP) Carmen Villain follows 2022's Only Love From Now On with this new full-length exploration of soporific, slow-moving ambience and disemboweled dub, a score she composed for a contemporary dance performance by acclaimed Choreographer Eszter Salamon. Simply put, it's one of the most captivating things we've heard this year; all luxurious texture-cycles in possession of a delirious, dreamlike quality that hits a rarified spot somewhere between Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol.II, classic Chain Reaction and Jim O'Rourke's meditative electronic recordings. Music from the Living Monument was written for choreographer Eszter Salamon's dance performance of the same name, a lavish and sculptural show for 14 performers dressed in ornamental fabrics (which you can see on the album art) while surrounded by slowly shifting environments. Carmen reflects the measured gestures of the dancers, ruminating on slowness and burying instrumentation in sensual abstraction. Edited down from almost three hours of music, the album opens with "Multicolor" and triggers the same sense of suspended animation you get from Selected Ambient Works Vol.II, its brooding mix of glacial gestures and fizzing pads suggestive of fuzzed, liminal states. From here it only gets deeper and more disorienting, peaking with the frankly majestic "Silver", deployed at a pace that makes Rhythm & Sound's beatless dub abstractions seem almost giddy by comparison. Villain locks us into infinitesimal movements with a slow, heartbeat-thud of a bass drum crumbling around choral pads that grow in intensity over its nine-minute duration. It's one of those pieces you could get lost in for hours, such is the power of its swirling, meditative vibrations. "Pink" ends the set by flexing more angular muscle, contorting what sounds like glassy clangs into electroacoustic pulses in a way that feels effortlessly engrossing, harmonizing with Jim O'Rourke's stunning Hands That Bind OST. Microtonality is an overused buzzword right now, but Carmen penetrates the essence of its magic, emphasizing sensuality and mysticism in a way that feels like someone whispering softly into your ear as you pass from the waking world into a deep, dreamless sleep. $21.99 UPC: N/A ELECTRONIC |

AINU: Ainu CD (SUBSOUND 142CD) Ainu is a Genoese cinematic sludge/post-doom trio established in 2021. Ainu is a concept record that moves between powerful and stirring soundscapes, building up at a slow but steady pace between psychedelia and post-metal, stemming from the Genoa trio's passion for cinema and their close relationship with the sea, its stories and creatures. Featuring special appearances from Lili Refrain as well as Francesco Bucci (Ottone Pesante) and Giorgio Nattero (Carcharodon), this album is an intense, emotionally dense experience that uses the descriptive foundations of seamen and the calls of huge animals to recall the connection between the sound and the environment. TELESCOPES, THE: Radio Sessions (2016 - 2019) LP (TR 539LP)
LP version. The Telescopes Radio Sessions collects together the essence of three live session recordings in three different countries over a three-year period between 2016-2019. This is the third in a series of radio session releases from Tapete Records that have so far included The Monochrome Set and Comet Gain.
"Here we have three sessions, all different people transmitting The Telescopes sound on each. Some are regulars, some dip in and out and some were just passing through. In each case The Telescopes chose them as their vessel and as the lighthouse keeper I did everything I could to help them on that journey while trying to be a good caretaker to the house of many rooms. The Telescopes have been invited in for many sessions over the years, the first two were for John Peel on BBC Radio 1. We also recorded a session for Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe before their celebrity when they had a show on BBC Radio Manchester. We could have compiled this album from those sessions, it was certainly considered but Tapete and myself believe this selection gives an exciting glimpse into that fleeting side of The Telescopes in a constant state of flux that is left mostly to myth and imagination. For those who listen to the records but have never had the chance to take in the live experience, welcome to the other side. For those that follow us live, here's a little reminder and a keepsake. Infinite suns." --Stephen Lawrie, February 2024

RIGBY, AMY: Hang In There With Me CD (TR 579CD) US singer-songwriter legend Amy Rigby presents her new album Hang In There With Me through Tapete Records. Eleven up-to-the minute songs written by Amy and recorded by Wreckless Eric at the couples' home in upstate NY, Hang In There With Me is a bracing look at life inside the vortex of the last few years. Rigby's distinctive voice bluntly traverses love, loss and DIY projects gone wrong over guitars cranked or shimmering, indelible bass lines, a raft of synthesizers, keyboards, beat boxes and the occasional drummer allowed into Amy and Erics rustic mid-century echo chamber. Like some people turn to the moon and stars for inspiration, Amy Rigby looks to creative heroes like Bob Dylan and Mike Leigh. She finds poetry in haircuts, live chat boxes; bartending and bookselling. Her music is the sound of everyday people getting by, just like the country artists she loved and learned to write songs from. The recording of Hang In There With Me was bookended by Amy performing in the round alongside Nashville compadre David Olney when he died onstage in January 2020, and the demise of Amy's dad. Along with Eric's near-fatal heart attack, it could have all made for heavy going in the studio, but Amy says: "There was nothing to hide in the few years when no one could see each other. And with my dad losing his mind and passing away, there's not much left to prove anymore. Watching key figures in our lives die just makes it clear that getting older is a gift and brings a new kind of freedom. Writing songs, making records and touring has been my life and I'm lucky I have the energy and will to keep at it. I still just want to share stories and rock out on guitar. The world is such a mess she says. Writing songs and working in the studio is a small way to make order out of the chaos. It keeps on giving me hope. Hang In There With Me looks at the impossibility of life and living it anyway, with abandon." Amy Rigby has established herself one of Americas enduring underground/cult/indie artists, combining the insight and humor of country and folk songwriting with classic rock craftsmanship and punk DIY spirit. She formed pre-Americana country band Last Roundup (Rounder) and Richard Hells' favorite girl group the Shams (Matador) in downtown NYC before launching a solo career with '90s classic album Diary Of A Mod Housewife. $12.39 EAN: 4015698290653 ROCK |

FENNESZ: Venice 20 (20th Anniversary Edition) CD (TO 5320CD) The 20th anniversary re-issue of Fennesz's best-selling Venice, originally released in 2004, is now available as a deluxe version remastered by Denis Blackham, with new and extra tracks not on the previous CD or vinyl versions. Included in the DVD-format edition is a booklet with texts by Fennesz himself, Denis Blackham, and Jon Wozencroft, with unseen photographs from the original 2004 sessions. The booklet also reproduces David Sylvian's original handwritten lyrics for "Transit." This "stunning" collaboration with David Sylvian continues where their fantastic duo track on Sylvian's album Blemish left off. Situated directly in the middle of a mostly subdued listening experience, "Transit" literally bursts out of the speakers accentuating the album's more pop-like characteristics as well as its more restrained moments.
Denis Blackham: "Fast forward to 2024 and here I am again with the same original master mixes I used in 2003 to make a new and expanded version of the album -- Venice 20. A little over twenty years later, technology in audio production, recording and mastering has improved substantially, so I was excited to return to this album and give my 2024 treatment."
Christian Fennesz: "Over months, I collected material for the album: short recordings of acoustic and electric guitars, experiments with newly introduced soft synths and samplers, and field recordings, sometimes done on the go and directly in Venice, where I stayed for several weeks. The sound and acoustics of the city fascinated me. From my room, you could clearly hear conversations at night with the window open, but it was uncertain whether they came from the neighboring house or several blocks away, as if the sound waves in Venice followed their own rules. It was during this time that the idea for Venice as an album title came to me, as a suggestive description of a dignified decline, decay, death, and rebirth. David Sylvian's lyrics and vocal performance for "Transit" perfectly encapsulated this idea for me. The piece remains a highlight of a wonderful, ongoing collaboration." $11.39 EAN: 5050580823181 ELECTRONIC 01. Rivers of Sand

DJ DEEP: Fosph EP 12" (TRESOR 319EP) 2024 repress. DJ Deep returns to Tresor with his new Fosph EP, his first release on the label since 2015. In the time between then and now, the deeply rooted boss has been particularly active, from b2b DJ sets with Jeff Mills, his work as part of the duo Sergie Rezza, to his newly released jazz-house remixes of Cotonete. Listening to his mixes, which regularly spin from essential Chicago and Detroit house sounds, through blends of Afro-percussion and dub reveals an ear sensitively tuned to the ground searching stories through music. Fosph proves an EP of real mastery that exudes techno, its drive, phasing patterns and melodic minimalism. "Swamps" opens the record with a jungle cacophony, its rhythms dipping and diving on a ritualistic sequence -- judiciously lean, biting and expressive. "Tommy" is an exercise in solo TR-909, the less-is-more machine repetitions that journey unceasingly -- sure to be a crucial drum tool. "Utrecht" hints at an expansive '90s ambient sound, imbuing analog static with synthetic cries and meanderings. "Escape" takes these sonic outposts, and goes even further. Its resonant drums propelling into action a pendulum of organic expressionism, rising into flight from its dusty origins. EP closer "Demonstration" is a clear example of DJ Deep's love for machine funk. An old-school banger doing just enough, its playful off-beat excursions and effective one-word sample recall a certain Midwestern directness. $11.99 EAN: 5051142007469 ELECTRONIC |

ARON & THE JERI JERI BAND: Dama Begga Nibi (I Want To Go Home) LP (UTR 011LP) During autumn 2018, after moving to Germany, Aron Ottignon met Senegalese musician and percussionist Bakane Seck, founder and leader of the Jeri Jeri Band, in his Berlin studio. The brainchild of composer and producer Aron Ottignon and percussionist Sabar Bakane Seck, Aron & The Jeri Jeri Band (A&TJJB) was born at the crossroads between Berlin and Dakar and oscillates between the frenetic rhythm of mbalax, the strength of afrobeat, the warmth of afro funk and the effervescence of jazz. GILLESPIE & LALO SCHIFRIN, DIZZY: When Diz Met Lalo: Selected Recordings 1960-62 LP (ACRSLP 1652LP)
"Lalo Schifrin is an Argentinian pianist, composer, arranger, and conductor who studied and played in France in the early 1950s before forming his own jazz orchestra back in Argentina. The founding father of bebop, Dizzy Gillespie is regarded as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking jazz musicians ever to grace the genre. When the two decided to start working together in the early 1960s, they laid to tape some of the greatest jazz records ever. He first met Dizzy Gillespie in 1956 when Gillespie visited Buenos Aries and offered to write the trumpeter a suite of orchestral jazz. The result was the glorious extended work 'Gillespiana.' While in New York in 1960, he recorded this masterpiece with Gillespie's 22 piece big band and was offered chance to join Gillespie's Quintet as pianist. Over the next two years they recorded a number of sessions as well as performing at recorded concerts and club dates. This exposure helped establish Schifrin's reputation, providing the basis for becoming a celebrated composer of film music in later years. This collection provides and snap shot into their time together, featuring three movements from Schifrin's Gillespiana on side A, with three of Gillespie's classic bebop tunes, 'Salt Peanuts,' 'A Night In Tunisia,' and 'Here 'Tis' performed by his quintet with Shifrin sitting in on piano on the flip. It will leave the listener with a thirst for more from this stunning collaboration."

GUITAR SLIM: Things I Used To Do: The Complete Specialty Releases LP (ACRSLP 1655LP)
"Eddie 'Guitar Slim' Jones was no ordinary bluesman. A major inspiration for Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Frank Zappa, Earl King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many more, Slim brought a new level of raw energy and electric intensity to guitar playing never witnessed before. Born in 1926 and raised in the blues heartlands of the Mississippi Delta, he plied his trade in the clubs of New Orleans after serving in WWII. His incendiary approach, vehement vocals and flamboyant theatrics made him the hottest ticket in town and his rockin' ways became the stuff of legend. His performances were loud, not content with turning his amp to ten, he would often plug straight into the PA system, creating an overdriven distortion that hadn't been heard before. In his short career he only recorded 30 sides and sadly his stage exploits were never captured on film. This collection features all his A and B sides released on the Specialty label from 1953-56 including the groundbreaking R&B No.1 'The Things That I Used To Do,' a track that features in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame's '500 Songs That Shaped Rock 'n' Roll.' He was an artist way ahead of his time, and a man who lived life as hard and fast as the most iconic contemporary rockers, becoming a huge influence for generations of blues and rock guitarists."

SUN RA: Disco 3000 CD (ARTYARD 101CD)
2024 restock. "Recorded at The Teatro Cilak, 1/23//1978, Milan Italy - Sun Ra: piano, organ, Moog, Crumar Mainman, vocals - John Gilmore: tenor sax, drums, vocals - Luqman Ali: drums, vocals - Michael Ray: trumpet, vocals. In the winter months of 1977-1978, philosopher, pianist and bandleader Sun Ra was in Italy. The Italian tour resulted in releases on Sun Ra's own Saturn label, all of which have long been out of print and all but impossible to find. With the re-release of Disco 3000, one of the most celebrated of these elusive Saturn gems is once more available. This release, and its companion Media Dreams, capture a side of Sun Ra's work - small ensemble, close form, original composition, rather minimal - that is otherwise under-represented. Depending heavily on Ra's electric and electronic keyboards (including the mysterious Crumar Mainman - of which even the company has no record) and, more unusually, on his intelligent use of sequencers and rhythm machines, this is an important window on the evolution of Ra's musical thinking, rendered even more transparent by the economy of its means; a quartet comprising only saxophonist John Gilmore, trumpeter Michael Ray and drummer Luqman Ali." 24 bit (mastered from the original tapes). 6 panel digipack features biographical notes by Michael Ray.

MELT BANANA: 3+5 CD (AZ 011CD)
"Presenting 3+5, the long-awaited eighth album from Tokyo-based noise-rockers Melt Banana on their own A-Zap label! The album showcases the duo's visionary musical approach and extraordinary abilities as performers: Yasuko Onuki's giddy, hyperactive vocalizing and Ichiro Agata's glitchy, cyberpunk guitar, delivered at dizzying speed, bathed in aggressive electronic sounds. Their aesthetic approach is exultantly experimental, fusing diverse genres imbued with chaotic energy. As on their previous works, the music on 3+5 is unpredictable, always filled with surprises and excitement. 3+5 synthesizes elements of a variety of extreme musics, hyper-pop, classic punk, vintage metal, and noise. It partakes of Japanese culture overall, especially the subcultures of gaming, anime and underground music. Melt-Banana seek to offer possibilities to musicians who won't start a band if they can't find a drummer, young women afraid to express themselves in their own unfiltered and unique voices, bedroom musicians and egg punks seeking to blend electronic noise with live instrumentation. 3+5 provides a fresh experience and perhaps inspiration for all. While Melt-Banana hasn't explicitly explained the meaning behind the album's title, 3+5, prime numbers symbolize mathematical integrity and independence, which could represent the band's uniqueness and freedom."

36: Dreamloops 4LP (BING 207LP)
"Presenting the first vinyl release of Dreamloops, a collection of long-form tracks that form a stunning two-and-a-half-hour suite over four LPs. The box set has been created, mixed, and designed by Dennis Huddleston, who, as 36 ('three-six'), is among the most celebrated electronic musicians operating today. Praised for his ability to imbue songs with strong, relatable undercurrents, Huddleston achieves a new level of subconscious connection with Dreamloops. First appearing in 2019 as a series of cassettes, Dreamloops was revisited by Huddleston in 2023 to bring newfound clarity, focus, and cohesion. There are eight pieces, each an 18:00 minute standalone self-contained work. In each song, time slows as an ensemble of sounds builds on themes and develops emotional power. Much like epic works such as The Sinking Of The Titanic by Gavin Bryars, LaMonte Young's Well-Tuned Piano, Daughters Of Darkness by Natural Snow Buildings and Morton Feldman's String Quartet II, each fragment of Dreamloops culls developing melodies towards hauntological steps forward. Sound spectrums don't spread wide but instead focus on a precise musical statement, exploring its absolute potential. That said, Dreamloops does not exist in its own idealized sphere. Deep listening reveals tape hiss, oversaturation, wow and flutter, and similar imperfections. The fingerprints deepen part of these tracks' emotional impact. Henryk Gorecki's humanity meets Max Richter's sense of grandeur meets Deathprod's absolute sound mining, as Huddleston deftly maneuvers his songs toward momentous epic impact."

JAWBREAKER: Unfun LP (BB 007LP)
2024 repress. Orange peach vinyl. "Blackball Records presents the 20th anniversary edition of Jawbreaker's beloved 1990 debut album Unfun -- twelve groundbreaking tracks (sixteen on the CD) that captured the very inception of emo's big band and launched a galaxy of young, earnest bands and the scenes that love them. Unfun has been remastered by John Golden from the original analog tapes; the increased sampling rate boosts some of the bottom end and mid-range. It sounds fucking awesome. The vinyl version is available for the first time since 1992, and the CD and download versions of the record include the three-song Whack & Blite EP, as well as the 7-inch mix of 'Busy' as an unlisted bonus track. This reissue features restored original artwork, and all formats include additional band photos from the time of recording. 'Want' and 'Fine ' "" were in heavy rotation on college radio back in the day, and remained set list staples throughout Jawbreaker's run. Unfun wound up on a lot of fanzine top ten lists, and even the mainstream press took notice. Rolling Stone called it 'a feast of heavy melody and righteous braying that roars along with all the spit and spirit of Husker Du's New Day Rising.'"

DELVING: All Paths Diverge 2LP (BFR 034LP)
"Founded by Elder frontman and multi-instrumentalist Nicholas DiSalvo, delving is a progressive entity created to express and explore musical ideas that don't quite fit Elder's main paradigm. With a heavy focus on psychedelic rock, krautrock, early electronic music and ambient sounds, delving still showcases the evocative melodies and distinctive songcraft that are Elder's trademarks, just in a more expansive way. A subtle rebuff to the adage 'all roads lead to Rome,' new album All Paths Diverge is delving's assertion that change is inevitable and nothing is set in stone, and finds the band sweeping through exploratory passages that feel nostalgic yet new, and reflect the searching nature of DiSalvo's creativity in a melting mirror of what Elder has established."

ALBERTINE, VIV: Flesh (Ruby Red Vinyl) LP (CADIZ 12270LP)
"Viv Albertine of The Slits' rare, long-unavailable EP gets a special release for the first time ever on vinyl. As Viv writes: 'The tracks on Flesh were recorded in 2009 and originally released on CD by Thurston Moore on his Ecstatic Peace label. The songs were written at a time of personal and emotional upheaval in my life, still I think there is something optimistic and naive about them. I hadn't played guitar for twenty years so had to relearn how to play -- it all came back to me -- not the technicality, which I never had, but the sound, my sound. The track 'I Should Have Known' was recorded a couple of years later. When Mick Jones heard me play the song live he said he would like to do a remix of it. He also added more guitar and backing vocals (I've always loved his voice). He said he gave the backing vocals a Jagger-ish twang.' Limited to 1,000 numbered copies and pressed on ruby red vinyl, includes bonus unreleased track and four postcards in a series of Viv's meat paintings from Chelsea & Westminster Art School in 1974/75."

"Legendary Reggae visionary Lee Perry's last recorded studio album. Written with, recorded, and produced by Killing Joke's/The Orb's Martin 'Youth' Glover. Without a doubt Lee 'Scratch' Perry is an orphic channeler, a super hero, a Black Ark Magician. He bedazzles and discombobulates, cackling at his own riddles, speaking from another realm. This album epitomizes the spirit of Lee 'Scratch' Perry and how it lives through those who are obsessives of this mystery of a man. He is said to have made something in the region of 2000 albums. This one is one he started with Youth in the third dimension -- and oversaw to completion from an unquantifiable one. Each artist featured (Carroll Thompson, Blue Pearl, Zoe Devlin, Radical Dance Faction, Boy George, Hollie Cook, and more) is as fervent about Scratch and his works as the next. The psychic rapport is evident. Youth calls it 'voodoo magic meets raiders of the lost ark.' COWLEY, PATRICK: Kickin' In (2024 Remaster) LP (DE 273LP)
"Dark Entries again shines a spotlight on bathhouse disco don Patrick Cowley with a newly remastered release of Kickin' In. Although Cowley tragically passed from AIDS-related illness in 1982, he left an extensive archive of unreleased tapes, many of which Dark Entries has had the honor of releasing. While working as a lighting technician at The City, SF's disco cabaret, Cowley saw rising star Frank Loverde perform. Cowley asked Loverde to contribute vocals to some material in progress, and Frank, Linda Imperial, and Peggy Gibbons joined Cowley in the studio. The resulting songs included 'Kickin' In,' a nine-minute cybernetic disco stormer that taps into the essence of Cowley's hi-NRG sound: equal parts spaced out and zoned in on the dancefloor. In May 1978 Cowley joined Loverde on stage at The City to perform 'Kickin' In' as they opened for disco diva Sylvester. 'Kickin' In' was initially released in 2015 via Honey Soundsystem who found the tapes in the basement of Megatone Records owner John Hedges. This newly remastered version was made possible due to the discovery of the original multi-track recordings of 'Kickin' In,' allowing for a fresh mixdown by Jim Hopkins as well as the creation of a new instrumental version. Also included are two impeccably sleazy Cowley jams recorded in 1980, 'Thief of Love' and 'Make It Come Loose.' Cowley narrates excerpts from his erotic journals on these raunchy slow-burners, capturing the vibe of SF's leather bars and backrooms. 'Thief of Love' features frequent Cowley collaborator Paul Parker on background vocals. This reissue of Kickin' In includes features an illustration by Gwenaël Rattke that originally appeared Cowley's erotic journal, Mechanical Fantasy Box, as well as a postcard with lyrics."

SWIFTUMZ: Simply The Best CD (EMP 051CD)
"Christopher McVicker could capably add a chapter or two to the omnipresent tall tale of perfect pop's supposed rebirth in 21st century San Francisco. That's assuming he could be bothered to weigh in on the subject. Still, for the last decade-plus, McVicker's chosen musical guise of Swiftumz has certainly been inspirational to the current pack. This perennially loose project allows McVicker to shape myriad aural obsessions into something quintessentially his own. From the distorted fuzz-centric moments on his earliest recordings through his more recent punky bursts of shiny pop, McVicker's work has wowed the fortunate few who have bent an ear in his direction. For sure, 'Everybody loves Chris.' Now returning with Simply The Best, he has leveled up. Aided by some of The City's finest like-minded volunteers -- Kelley Stoltz, folks from The Aislers Set, The Bananas, Dirty Ghosts and many others, Simply The Best is a varied, all-hits endeavor, placing vibey, holed-up bedroom ballads alongside idealized, sparkling pop rock, chilled on one occasion, sharpened on another. Of particular note are the lead guitar contributions courtesy of Chris Guthridge, adding punch to McVicker's effortlessly cool arrangements. These combinations and contributions always seem to boost Swiftumz beyond expectations, toward the timeless and classic. The prime testament to McVicker's songcraft is that he makes it look and sound so easy. In truth, Simply The Best earned its name over six long years of construction, a tumultuous period that saw the tragic loss of a cherished friend and guitarist, the abrupt closure of the record's pressing plant and countless other personal and professional upheavals. Somehow McVicker, far too blessed to ever be stressed, was able to see through all these hardships and get all these gems cut and polished."

IBRAHIM, ABDULLAH: Good News From Africa LP (ENJ 20481LP)
"Pianist-composer Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand) has long ranked among South Africa's giants alongside Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, and the late Kippie Mokoetsi. A master of improvisation with a distinctive African edge, the exiled Cape Town musician has developed a musical style over the past 30 years that defies categorization. Rather, it is a fascinating mosaic of diverse traditions including African rutal and township rhythms, classical jazz, and gospel. South African folk melodies are enriched with Western harmonies, coalescing into a gracefully fluid and intensely spiritual whole. Best known for his hypnotic and introspective stream-of-consciousness compositions and his innovative interpretations of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Billy Strayhorn classics, Ibrahim's music is at once accessible and complex, intriguing and lyrical. He has indefatigably explored and fused classical jazz with the multitude of influences that make up traditional and contemporary South Afrian music."

GABYS, THE: The Gabys II 7" (FF 017EP)
"The Gabys are a lower than low-key UK bedsit duo, too shy yet to set foot on stage, but their isolation has wrought gem after gem of minimalist cassette recorded melancholy. This is Velvet Underground-inspired electric folk music that can roll with '90s New Zealand greats like Dadamah and The Garbage & The Flowers but also shares parallels with current San Francisco lo-fi pop moodists like April Magazine, Cindy, and Mister Baby. This is The Gabys second vinyl EP after a previous 7" on Fruits & Flowers and a cassette on Detroit's All Gone Records and the four tracks here are over way too soon. There is slightly more space for the gorgeous vocals and melodies this time around but their trademark murky guitar sound is still intact."

MALEK & FLAKO, AHMED: The Electronic Tapes LP (HAB 005LP)
2024 restock; LP version. "Unreleased early Algerian synth electronic by Ahmed Malek, compiled and co-produced by Flako. In the early 1980s, Ahmed Malek was already in his 50s, when he discovered synthesizers and electronic music for himself and started to experiment with sounds. The result was a mixture of ambient synth music, field recordings he made in Cuba and a wide variation of different sound experiments that he also presented as different avanguarde music festivals in Cuba and the US. None of it was ever released but we got a huge box of master tapes from his family and we're happy to present this different side of Ahmed Malek's music. It was compiled and co-produced by Flako, a fan of early electronic and synth music. This is not a remix album though, Flako's aim was to create an album out of 2 hours of material that sounds like it might have if Mr. Malek would have finished it himself before of his death. Fully approved and licensed from the artists family. The album comes with an informative booklet with liner notes, an interview with Flako regarding his approach towards the production and unseen photos. We will also release a third album by Ahmed Malek which will be more in the vein again of the music he is known for and this album will also be previously unreleased."

FAKHR, ROGER: East Of Any Place LP (HAB 025LP)
2024 restock; LP version. "East of Any Place, out via Habibi Funk, is a treasure trove of songs the label came across alongside Rogér Fakhr's acclaimed 2021 album, Fine Anyway. These tracks, hidden for decades and only passed between a handful of people, offer a glimpse into Rogér's musical genius and the vibrant scene of Lebanon during a period marked by civil war and social upheaval. This release serves as a companion to Fine Anyway, featuring studio tracks that didn't make it into the previous album. In the process of putting together Fine Anyway Habibi Funk came across a number of other songs Rogér had recorded around the same time. Initially Rogér was not too fond of them for one reason or another, though the musical quality was not the reason. It was a treasure trove of songs that only a handful of people had access to. Some time ago, Rogér started working on some new songs that will hopefully will turn into a new album, and while the label spoke about these, Habibi Funk brought up all these other songs it still had from the same sessions as Fine Anyway, and that it felt it would be great to share them with the world as a bonus to the songs already shared as part of Fine Anyway. Luckily, Rogér eventually agreed, and this is how Habibi Funk is able to share East of Any Place. As always, both vinyl and CD come with an extensive booklet featuring background and interviews with Rogér, including unseen photos, scans and more."

SCHULZE, KLAUS: Ballett 3 & 4 2CD (MIG 1880CD)
Klaus Schulze talks about Ballett: "Apart from Ballett 1 & 2 the Contemporary Works boxset also contained Ballett 3 and Ballett 4. All four pieces were originally intended to be one composition in honor to my mother who had been a ballet dancer and had died in 1998. I never assumed that the ballet would be performed with dancing. Then I would have to cut down to about 15 or 20 minutes and would probably have to throw away all my favorite parts, which would be quite difficult! The music could have had another title but since it was the first production I did after the death of my mother, I called it Ballett and just numbered the four parts. Ballett 3 once again features traditional instrumentalists such as Thomas Kagermann (violin, flute), Wolfgang Tiepold (cello), and Tobias Becker (oboe). Obviously, I could have played Tobi's oboe or Tiepold's cello with a sampler but it's really something different when those instruments are played live as there is a wonderful interaction with my electronics. Then, you not only have the instruments but also the musicians' ego. If I play a cello sample then I'll do it the way I play keyboards. However, a cellist or oboist plays the 'real' instrument with all the subtleties that come with playing, which a sample can never reproduce. The pure sound of an instrument is not the crucial thing here however. It's the musician's personality that is important as it determines the character of the music."

OMEGA: Time Robber LP (MIG 3211LP)
"Omega, the most successful Hungarian prog rock band, released their best material in the '70s, and Time Robber is considered the musical highlight of Omega's discography. The heart of the LP is the title track, flanked by 'House Of Cards Part I & II.' The nearly 13-minute work encapsulates exactly what Omega was all about in 1976: progressive space rock mixed with hard rock elements. After four studio albums and one compilation, the Hungarian top stars Omega were still an insider tip in the West. But there was a noticeable upward trend in the sales figures, even if the sales were far from going through the roof. In addition, the band had developed and become more professional both live and in their appearance. Bacillus/Bellaphon wanted to keep Omega at all costs and extended the quintet's contract in 1976 until 1980. The band moved into the Europasound Studios in Offenbach with Peter Hauke and recorded Time Robber there. The LP was Omega's breakthrough in the West. To date, the album is said to have sold around two million copies. And this success was no accident, as the Hungarians delivered a complex, self-contained work for the first time."

MARTYN, JOHN: Live At Rockpalast 1978 2CD (MIG 90972CD)
"Two-disc set, with CD and bonus DVD. John Martyn (born Iain David McGeachy on September 11, 1948 in New Malden, Surrey, died January 9, 2009 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland) was an exceptional guitarist and accomplished singer/songwriter. He was 'an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues' (The Times). Nick Drake, the melancholy songwriter born in Burma, now Myanmar, was a good friend and flatmate of John's and, like John Martyn, an insider tip on the singer/songwriter scene for years. When Drake died in 1974, John Martyn had just gotten his career off the ground, signed a record deal with Island Records, and celebrated his first chart successes with his 1973 album Solid Air, the title track of which was dedicated to the depressed Drake. In 1977 came the album One World, the final breakthrough for John Martyn. An album with music somewhere between folk and jazz, recorded under the direction of Chris Blackwell with musicians such as Stevie Winwood and the Jamaicans Rico and Lee Perry. On this album, Martyn had already perfected his amazing virtuoso picking technique on the guitar, and he also created a unique sound by often running his acoustic guitar through a fuzzbox, phase shifter and above all Echoplex and other effects devices. John Martyn makes full use of this technique at the concert on March 17, 1978 in Hamburg's Audimax. Alone on stage, John is the solo entertainer, spontaneous, sometimes funny and ironic, unpredictable, fearless and fascinating and all this on a very high musical level. John is the great master of ceremonies who inevitably captivates the audience. And he is not above interacting with and involving his audience, creating a unique live atmosphere. Acoustic, electric, funny, ironic, unpredictable, fearless and fascinating -- all this plus a bonus track from Die Aktuelle Stunde (WDR TV) from October 12, 1989." DVD is NTSC format, region 0.

HARVESTMAN: Triptych: Part Two CD (NR 131CD)
"At its heart, music has always been a questioning of inheritance -- a dialogue with predecessors and forebears, the forging of one's own perspective in relation to what has come before, and for some, a plunge into the boundless realms between. For Steve Von Till, that process has always taken on an added dimension to become the most sacred of tasks. Whether through the apocalyptic uprising of Neurosis, the sonic deconstructions of their sister project, Tribes of Neurot, the invocatory intimacy of his eponymous solo albums or his instrumental psychedelic reveries in the guise of Harvestman, that dialogue has never just been with musical influences, but with what underpins them: the primordial, elemental forces now banished to the peripheries of contemporary consciousness, yet still broadcasting a signal for all who will listen. Released periodically on three of 2024's full moons, the three-album cycle, Triptych, is Harvestman's most ambitious undertaking yet. But it's also the distillation of a unique approach that finds a continuity amongst the fragmented, treating all its myriad musical sources and reference points not as building bricks, but as tuning forks for a collective ancestral resonance, residing in that liminal space between the fundamental and the imaginary, the intrinsic and the speculative. Drawn to the megaliths, ruins and ancient sites mapped out along the British and European mainland's geographical and psychic landscapes, the folklore and apocrypha forever resurfacing as portals from a rational world, Triptych is a meditation forged from traces and residues, and a hallucinatory recollection of artists who have tapped into that enduring otherworldliness embedded within. It's a dream diary narrating a passage through Summer Isle where Flying Saucer Attack are wafting out of a window, a distant Fairport Convention are being remixed by dub master Adrian Sherwood, celestial scanners Tangerine Dream are trying to drown out Bert Jansch and Hawkwind are playing Steeleye Span covers, all prized out of time yet bound to its singularity. Featuring Om bassist and long-term friend of Steve's, Al Cisneros."

ROACH, STEVE: Dreamtime Return (Remaster) 2LP (PRO 350LP)
"140gram 2LP color-in-color vinyl. Gatefold jacket with photos, liner notes, and credits in resealable collector's bag. Since its release in 1988, Dreamtime Return earned its reputation as a genuine classic. The magnum opus is one of the most important, widely known and highly respected release in Roach's vast body of work. It serves as an essential benchmark within the electronic-ethno-atmospheric genre. Roach's travels in the Australian outback, along with studies of the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and his desert walkabouts in California were the lifeblood for this recording which even today sounds like a transmission from the near future and the very distant past. With new vinyl-manufacturing-metal sourced from the 2018 high-definition remaster, the true expansive depth of this iconic masterpiece has been meticulously unveiled, revealing a refined listening experience. Mastering engineer Howard Givens utilized an extensive array of analog and digital tools and his passion for this seminal work to restore the original sonic nature and visionary intention, taking the listener deeper into the dreamtime."

REICH, STEVE: Four Organs/Phase Patterns LP (SV 096LP)
2024 repress. "Steve Reich remains one of the most important figures in 20th century music. Though he studied at the prestigious arts institutions Julliard and Mills College, by the mid- 1960s Reich set about dismantling the very orthodoxy that he had been trained in. Forming a new musical language based on repetitive processes, Reich became established as part of the so-called 'Big Four' of New York minimalists (along with La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Philip Glass). Reich's influence can easily be seen today in both the classical world and contemporary pop music. 'Four Organs' is the ultimate minimalist composition. Performed by Reich, Glass, Art Murphy and Steve Chambers, four identical Farfisa organs strike a single chord and gradually lengthen each note to produce polyrhythms between the players. Anchored by Jon Gibson's stoicallysteady pulse on maracas, the piece deconstructs its opening burst to a sustained mass of sound -- stretching the tones to create (in Reich's words) 'slow-motion music.' Inspired by Reich's early training on drums, 'Phase Patterns' treats the keyboards like tuned percussion instruments: a basic rhythm pattern is played in unison and almost imperceptibly increases tempo to move out-of-sync. Each progressive cycle emphasizes unique figures that are not generated by an individual alone, but rather emerge from the communal expression of the group. Originally released on Shandar in 1971, Four Organs / Phase Patterns is one of most highly regarded avant-garde recordings in the past 45 years. This first-time vinyl reissue features cover photography by artist Michael Snow and is recommended for fans of Neu!, Glenn Branca and Tim Hecker."

VICTOR/HERBIE NICHOLS SUNG, FAY: Life Is Funny That Way 2CD (TAO 015CD)
"Acclaimed vocalist-lyricist-arranger Fay Victor and her Herbie Nichols SUNG Quintet celebrate and thoroughly reconsider the rich legacy of revered jazz composer Herbie Nichols with Life Is Funny That Way, bringing it singing boldly into this century. Following on Billie Holiday, who famously wrote 'Lady Sings The Blues' to Nichols' 'Serenade,' Victor developed this deep labor of love project over the course of the past decade, after years of exploring the late composer's work. This landmark album is also the first time that a full program of lyrics have been written and recorded for Nichols' compositions. The innovative arrangements -- also by Victor -- are brought to vibrant life by a long-dedicated and deeply gifted quintet of veteran jazz performers, with Michaël Attias (alto and baritone saxophones), Anthony Coleman (piano), Ratzo Harris (bass), and Tom Rainey (drums). A group united by their mutual love of both Nichols' writing and Victor's estimable artistry. The source material is from Nichols' Blue Note sessions of 1955-56, plus three compositions not recorded in his lifetime. The erudite and extensive liner notes, which include key elements of Nichols biography, were written by esteemed jazz critic and author Kevin Whitehead. Though Fay Victor was born two years after the death of pianist-composer Herbie Nichols, these two native New Yorkers are connected by the space-time filament that is mu- sic, with a detour through Amsterdam. Nearly 30 years ago while living in the Netherlands, Victor discovered and was captivated by Nichols' music in the collection of her future husband. She first began to explore the concept of singing this tremendous work with Dutch pianist Misha Mengelberg and then, with Mengelberg's encouragement, together with trombonist and one-time Nichols collaborator Roswell Rudd. It was in 2013 that Fay Victor formed the Herbie Nichols SUNG project with American players and began to present it regularly in NYC, adding to a European trio version that had already toured the continent. This deep and extensive artistic journey which Victor embarked on, alongside leading other acclaimed bands and recording projects of all-original material, eventually led to the enthused involvement of the TAO Forms label. Its creative director, drummer Whit Dickey, not only shared a great appreciation of Nichols' singular work as a composer, but was also a long-time fan of the exceptionally gifted vocalist."

ENDON: Fall of Spring LP (THRILL 611X-LP)
White color vinyl. "The world of ENDON is one of constant evolution and revolution. The Tokyo-based ensemble of Taichi Nagura, Koki Miyabe, and Taro Aiko have made a name for themselves with their relentless exploration of sonic extremes in the vein of artists such as the Boredoms and Merzbow. The resulting music is a powerful emotional release for both artist and listener. Their commitment to evolution and dystopian noise as a playground for exploration and pure expression carried them through the recent departure of their drummer Shin Yokota and the tragic death of brother and band member Etsuo Nagura in 2020. Where some might have tried to replace members, ENDON's core pressed forward with an autobiographical work exploring these changes and the shifts in their lives. Honest and raw emotions delivered with uncompromising sonic intensity, Fall of Spring is a thrilling tidal wave of sound and raw emotions born of the psyche of three individuals musically congregating into one tumultuous voice. Fall of Spring captures the electricity and unpredictability of ENDON's live performances in vivid detail. The album harnesses the power of their storied performances through unpredictable movements, deft arrangements and an exhilarating textural palette. By imbuing their sound with raw feeling at every edge of obliteration, the trio are able to create what they call 'organic music with inorganic material.'
For ENDON, those moments of suspense and surprise are the core of their music. As with their shows, Fall of Spring is a vessel for band and audience to share moments, to suspend time and move through grief and pain, and to bask in catharsis and resilience. ENDON continues to be a mercurial force in the world of extreme music."

UMBERTO: Black Bile LP (THRILL 612X-LP)
Pressed on amber color vinyl. "Black Bile compiles some of Umberto's most resplendent, sanguine music to date. The solo work of LA composer Matt Hill draws heavily from the world of cinema, spinning immersive narratives and rich atmospheres using sound alone. Hill, an active composer for film and television, recently scored the 2022 Jerry Pyle film Loveseat (soundtrack was released in 2023). Other recent scores include the 2020 thriller Archenemy, from the producers of cult classic Mandy. Inspired by the ancient Greek theory of the 'four humors,' an early medical theory linking the inner workings of the human body to the elements. Black Bile specifically links the feelings of melancholy with autumn. Hill's celestial compositions are an autumnal soundtrack conveying beauty, yearning, reflection and comfort. Many of the album's phrases are constructed from just two notes or sounds, arranged by Hill into complex patterns that undulate with an organic pulse. The spare melodic structure holds a myriad of small and beautiful details. The songs began with Hill improvising on the piano, to find the notes and patterns that created the musical and emotional structure from which he could expand with textural detail. Hill then would often remove the initial structure leaving a sparer and more skeletal one which he could again expand upon to create a full piece. The careful attention to each detail gives his minimal compositions emotional heft. The album masterfully stakes Umberto's claim among other avant-ambient boundary pushers such as Lawrence English or Laurel Halo."
"There is real compositional variety and intrigue in his songs? elaborate and unpredictable... it's hard not to be impressed with Umberto's evolution of late, as lacerating experience as it may be at times." --The Quietus
"Masterfully polished and skillfully arranged... dazzling" --Brainwashed

GIBSON, BRIAN: Thrasher (Original Soundtrack) LP (THRILL 617LP)
"Thrasher is the soundtrack to a virtual reality video game about a creature that has a life cycle that traverses different psychedelic realities. Thrasher was composed and performed by Brian Gibson, bassist of Lightning Bolt. It is the follow up to the acclaimed best-selling game and soundtrack Thumper. The central character in Thrasher is a giant centipede like creature, so Gibson employed a lot of melodic sequences that resonated well with its segments moving through space. Says Gibson: 'I grew up playing some of the earliest video games, Pac-Man, Space Invaders on an Atari 2600. Due to the limitations of those graphics, they were extremely abstract games compared to today's games which are just trying to simulate reality in the highest possible detail. I prefer games that make their own reality. I'd like to be transported as far from this one as possible, like Pac-Man, when you play it, it's obvious what you are supposed to do, it makes its own sense.' The soundtrack has the drive you might expect knowing Gibson's work in Lightning Bolt combined with complex melodic structures that are absolutely irresistible. In addition to bucking the hyperreality trend in gameplay, Gibson's DIY ethos and warehouse culture roots permeate the entire soundtrack. He says it best: 'Thumper has that combination of psychedelic and iconic that takes me back to the Fort Thunder days. Thrasher is a further exploration into some of those motifs.'"
"Did you really expect a game made by a member of notorious power duo Lightning Bolt to be anything less than a punishing hell ride?" --FACT
"A masterpiece." --Brooklyn Vegan

WELDON/KOKOMO ARNOLD, CASEY BILL: Bottleneck Guitar Trendsetters Of The 1930's LP (YAZ 1049HLP)
2024 restock. 180 gram exact repro reissue of this Yazoo's collection of these two blues guitarists, originally released in 1975. "Kokomo Arnold and Casey Bill Weldon were two of the most popular and original-sounding bottleneck guitarists of the Thirties, a generally dismal period for blues recording. In terms of contemporary appeal (the only yardstick that mattered to blues men themselves) they far outstripped Robert Johnson, Bukka White, and other bottleneck artists of the era.... Arnold, a left-handed guitarist, confronts the listener as one of the zaniest, most manic guitarists ever recorded; Weldon's work is an outright rejection of traditional blues harmony, and invites comparison to Western swing."
