MANSFIELD, KEITH: Vivid Underscores (KPM) LP (BEWITH 092LP)
2024 restock. They say: "Contemporary scores for visual effect." Be With Records say: "Synth-heavy, low-slung space-funk masterpiece." The creator of the romping tunes that became the iconic themes to the BBC's Grandstand program and their televised Wimbledon Tennis Championship coverage, Keith Mansfield was perhaps KPM's most prolific artist from the mid-1960s right the way through the 1980s. As well as the sort of pop orchestral sound that is all over these classic library records, he could also turn his hand to raw, edgy rock and funk. Quentin Tarantino has included some of Keith's work on the soundtracks to Kill Bill and Grindhouse (2007). Mansfield's Vivid Underscores from 1977 is a sample freak's wet dream. "High Velocity" sets the tone with its aggressive horns, wah-wah guitars, funky baseline and wobbly synth refrain. "Crash Course" -- Stetsasonic horn refrain? Beautiful -- jazzy chase-funk, amazing warm keys, percussion, and funky horns -- all action. The more restrained "Matter Of Urgency" is an utterly amazing, brass-heavy underscore. The grandiose, uplifting "Dawn Of Aquarius" still sounds like the future with its tense, thundering drums, killer bassline and swirling synths. Version II loses the drums and percussion but is no less startling. "Staying Power" closes the first side with a relentless, pounding groove. "Trucking Company" is a pacey, synth-and-string masterpiece and its accompanying parts mess with the formula to great effect. "Hot Cargo" and "Espionage" are both tense spy-funk themes par excellence. "Interplay" is a quiet killer, with flutes over a glistening piano refrain just waiting to be looped. "Omen" is a mini-drama masterpiece, one only Mansfield could create. Even though it is a mix of short themes in-and-amongst longer, full-length tracks, Vivid Underscores is still thoroughly listenable from start to finish. Original analog tapes remastered for vinyl by Simon Francis. 180 gram vinyl.

SUPERSTAR QUAMALLAH: Invisible Man 2LP (BEWITH 157LP)
Holy grail hip-hop alert! Superstar Quamallah's Invisible Man was never released on wax so, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of this astounding record, Be With presents the first ever vinyl edition. A stunning record which gained accolades upon its initial release, such as a prominent feature on Gilles Peterson's renowned Best Of 2009 show, it's one of the most essential jazz rap albums of all time. Cut across double vinyl, it's exceedingly limited, with just 500 pressed for the world. Deep jazz rap on that mellow-melodic tip, Invisible Man is an unforgettable album with nothing but dope beats and dope bars. It supremely captures the essence of a golden age classic without being slavish to the past. Perfect to chill to, Invisible Man is profoundly jazz-oriented and captures with simplicity and sincerity the essence of hip-hop circa 1983-1994. Brooklyn-born, California-based emcee, DJ, and producer Superstar Quamallah was active in the West Coast underground scene throughout the '90s and recorded extensively with such revered names as Defari and Tajai. His parents were some serious artistic heavyweights, too; his father was soul organist Big John Patton, a giant in the jazz world known for his releases on Blue Note whilst his mother was an active designer. However, he remains relatively unknown. Invisible Man, named ostensibly after the classic Ralph Ellison novel, could also refer to how he is viewed by the public at large. With a laidback flow and deep, relaxing presence on the mic, Superstar Quamallah is equal parts Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, and Guru. Invisible Man is refined, soulful, feel-good hip-hop of the old school. Its wise, spiritual and literate sound, combined with the summertime vibes projected by the smooth beats and the nostalgia-inducing samples and vocal scratches, created jazzy boom-bap rap reminiscent of prime De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Gang Starr. This album was mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis, cut by Cicely Balston and pressed at Record Industry. Finally available on the format it should always have been on, it must never be rendered invisible again. Featuring restored artwork.

LOCKWOOD, ANNEA: Becoming Air / Into the Vanishing Point LP (BT 080LP)
Limited 2024 restock. Following on from the acclaimed Tiger Balm / Amazonia Dreaming / Immersion LP (BT 028LP, 2017), Black Truffle present two major new instrumental works from legendary sound artist and experimental composer Annea Lockwood. Demonstrating the ever evolving and radically open nature of Lockwood's practice, these two recent works were developed in close collaboration with their performers. "Becoming Air" (2018), developed with and performed by trumpeter Nate Wooley, uses extended technique and electronics to interfere with Wooley's virtuosic control over his instrument, pushing him into areas of fluctuating pitch and timbral instability. Motivated by a desire for "the letting go of sound to be itself", "Becoming Air" unfolds as a series of texturally distinct moments separated by pauses, each fixing on a particular approach to the instrument (long tones, upper-register whistles, breathy wooshes) and maintaining it in an essentially static fashion, focusing our attention on subtle changes and variations. Dipping into near-inaudibility in the fragile high tones of its opening section, the piece dramatically increases in volume and intensity in its final third, climaxing with a passage of roaring distortion, where the interaction between feedback and trumpet pitches calls up the shuddering interference effects of Robert Ashley's Wolfman. "Into the Vanishing Point" (2019) is a collaborative work developed with New York piano and percussion quartet Yarn/Wire, who have performed work by major contemporary composers such as Olivia Block, Catherine Lamb, and Klaus Lang. Carrying on the ecological and environmental concerns of some of Lockwood's previous works, "Into the Vanishing Point" was inspired by a devastating news article on the global collapse of insect populations. Discovering that the four members of Yarn/Wire had also read this text, Lockwood mapped out a loose structure for the piece that would allow the composer and four performers to explore their "feelings about what is happening ecologically". Working with a huge variety of instruments, objects and techniques of sound production, the resulting work is an alluringly lush, organically unfolding tissue of unorthodox textures and haunting tones. Though not intended to sonically represent ecological issues in any direct way, its unique sound world of rubbed piano strings, gently handled objects and chiming pitches often calls up natural images: of insects and frogs, wind rushing through trees, a bird's wings in flight. Presented in a stunning gatefold cover with liner notes by Lockwood, Wooley and Yarn/Wire, Becoming Air / Into the Vanishing Point is a testament to the generosity and experimentation that continue to characterize the work of this extraordinary artist, active for over fifty years.

SAN LUCAS BAND: Music of Guatemala LP (BJR 094LP)
Limited repress; LP version. First reissue of these cult 1974 recordings of a Mayan brass band playing funeral dirges and popular songs in its distinctive extended harmonic and rhythmic style. The members of the San Lucas Band lived in the mountain village of San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala, playing local events of both religious and social nature. The pride of their town since 1922, the band represented a fast-disappearing musical tradition when these recordings were originally released in 1975. Their unique sound derived from an unusual combination of instruments, a repertoire including pieces dating from more than fifty years before the recordings were made to more recent ones, and above all from the highland Maya style of their playing, which is characterized by a preference for freer rhythmic structures and a wider variety of pitches than Western scales allow. One of Jon Hassell and Charlie Haden's favorite records, it was nominated for a Grammy Award upon first release and has remained much beloved by a small community of enthusiasts for decades. A profound and rewarding musical experience for all adventurous listeners, notably fans of Albert Ayler, microtonal and raw cosmic music.

LANGDON & ANTHONY VINE, JACK: The Generous Law Cassette (SAUNA 079CS)
The Generous Law, a new album by organist Jack Langdon and guitarist Anthony Vine, presents a glimpse of the inner voices and acoustical splendor of the Fisk Organ at Wellesley College, enlivened by the intuition of two improvisers. At the keyboards, Langdon crafts geometries of patiently braided lines and incisions, configuring the hues and shades of organ stops with an ear to the materiality of sound. Vine seizes on this, tuning his guitar to the organ and bringing his strings into alignment with the harmonics of the reeds and pipes, becoming an extension of the instrument, an organ stop of sorts. The guitar flows in and around Langdon's angular counterpoint, like the shimmer between the divots of a jigsaw puzzle, illuminating its matrix. The tonal design of the Fisk Organ brings these interactions into vibrant relief through its quarter-comma meantone tuning and 17th-century Danish and German stops -- giving organists access to sonorities only found in historic North European churches. Resurrecting a distant sonorous past echoes the design of Wellesley College's Houghton Chapel itself, a braiding of ecclesiastical motifs with no historical center, designed to impart a sense of old-world sacredness. Fisk's ahistorical mélange yielded something extraordinary, not a cheap replica or period imitation, but an instrument of sui generis chroma and expressivity. The musical idioverse of Langdon and Vine is defined less by interior imaginations, established style, and compositional formality, and more by the inexplicable pull of the organ, its guiding and grounding voice. In a letter to Ross Feld, Philip Guston speaks to this abstract, yet ubiquitous dynamic in artmaking with his notion of the "generous law," the namesake for this collection: "I think you are writing about the generous law that exists in art. A law which can never be given but only found anew each time in the making of the work. It is a law, too, which allows your forms (characters) to spin away, take off, as if they have their own lives to lead -- unexpected too -- as if you cannot completely control it all. I wonder why we seek this generous law as I call it. For we do not know how it governs -- and under what special conditions it comes into being. I don't think we are permitted to know other than temporarily. A disappearance act. The only problem is how to keep away from the minds that close in and itch (God knows why) to define it." This music is not driven by concept, process, or system, but by the wanderlust of sound, time, and listening.

GASPAROTTI, GABRIELE: Tropismi Cassette (SAUNA 083CS)
Gabriele Gasparotti's second full length album, Tropismi, is a collection of mesmerizing compositions with masterful polyrhythmical textures and harmonies, strings, prepared piano, magnetic tape and field recordings. Gasparotti's unique style uses classical composition techniques such as counterpoint, canone inverso and serialism to create morphing expanding harmonies continuously. Tropismi features stunning cellotronics by Benedetta Dazzi, cellist and sound designer with which Gasparotti established an intense collaboration during the past years. The album has been recorded on a full analog reel-to-reel setup and mastered by Rashad Becker at Clunk (Berlin). Says Gasparotti: "In my latest release I tried to seize the instant moment, the kairosor Greek kairological time: 'shooting' the instant with an on-the-fly recording of the performance on magnetic tape. While recording, I noticed that in several instances the compositions grew beyond the idea I had set out with: for example, some unforeseen elements started to emerge due to the interaction of the sound with the surrounding space. Though they were seemingly uninfluential, they made the compositional idea gradually slide into unexpected territories, arousing certain sensations in me that would suggest a particular atmosphere, image or state of mind -- a judgement that moved my way of manipulating the sound and at times suggesting even a possible title for a sonic idea that was meant to represent nothing but itself. This interaction between the sound and my mind reminded me of the biological phenomenon of tropism: 'The turning of an organism, or part of it, in a particular direction in response to an external stimulus.' So, in this work I expressly entitled Tropismi, I investigated those movements which appear to me as being the engine of existence and of expansion of the Universe." Gabriele Gasparotti is a composer based in Italy who specializes in electroacoustic music on analog gear. A classical trained pianist and violist, Gasparotti studied composition and electronic music with Riccardo Sinigaglia and Giuseppe Giuliano at the Conservatorio Verdiin Milan and the West Coast synthesis with Todd Barton.

TRANS EUROPA EXPRESS: Il Gatto Dagli Occhi Di Giada CD (CDDM 326CD)
Digitmovies reintroduces this remarkable progressive avant-garde rock soundtrack based on Antonio Bido's 1977 cult movie Watch Me When I Kill. Music is written and performed by Trans Europa Express. For this CD, Digitmovies used the recording session's master stereo tapes. Its progressive style follows the band's origins. Trans Europa Express's lineup consisted of: Mauro Lusini (singer), Gianfranco Coletta (guitarist for Chetro & Co and for the earliest Banco del Mutuo Soccorso's formation), Glauco Borrelli (Albero Motore's bass player), Adriano Monteduro (guitarist who recorded his first album as singer and song writer together with Reale Accademia di Musica). The atrocious killings are highlighted by a theme full of mystery, where the electric bass prevails, creating those atmospheres typical of Dario Argento's movies, and by rhythmical rock themes. This score alternates delicate moments, magical and romantic, to a great variety of avant-garde tracks, very impactful both in the movie and out. A soundtrack for every archive devoted to noir genre.

AMBASSADOR HAZY: Leaving Here LP (FTR 759LP)
Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records are present the latest hazy fried sounds of New York State's Ambassador Hazy (aka Sterling Deweese) and Leaving Here. Leaving Here is hallucinatory lightning in a bottle -- it is the sound of sunny summer days passing by and old friends coming and going, and psychedelics slipping in and out of your mind in vast quantities. Each song is an acid-soaked rabbit hole which sucks you in and leaves you immersed in an unusual sonic world projected before you in brilliant technicolor. Musically each song veers between bright sunshine fuzzy soaked pop and dark warping druggy-tinged nightmares that is the USA in 2024. It quickly becomes clear that Ambassador Hazy is an artist driven by an expansive musical vision; one which feels as sumptuous as it is otherworldly. Immaculately bright and infectiously catchy psych pop gems packed full of odd detours and abrupt freakish left turns. The songs here are far too densely packed with way too many ideas for them to ever sound uninteresting or bland, each passage is a triumph of an expansive musical vision; one which feels as sumptuous as it is otherworldly. Leaving Here expands upon what Ambassador Hazy has experimented upon their previous releases, that sense of wonder and outlandish that leaves you immersed in a wonderful landscape of hypnotic, transcendental sounds and surrealistic lyrics. On the surface, Leaving Here is a psych pop album, but when you peel back the outer layers, you're left with something that feels far beyond this world. Think all your favorite fuzzy bands on a nice, big, psychedelic drug cocktail. Leaving Here is presented in a 350gsm laminated outer sleeve with insert and adorned with the eye-catching artwork by Greg Gangemi. Pressed on clear vinyl.

HEFFERNAN & PARK: Sun Reflector LP (FTR 774LP)
Sun Reflector is the debut LP collaboration by Heffernan (Ivan The Tolerable, All Structures Align, King Champion Sounds, University Challenged) and Pärk (Black Tempel Pyramid, Teeth Of Glass, Kosmonaut). Sun Reflector is steeped in a haze of primitive drum machines, fanned phase and sustained scuzz-rippled guitar chimes, an ambient electronic creation with emphasis on repetitive trance-inducing rhythmic pulsations of electronic sound and subtle counterpoints that slowly unfold as the rhythmic drive marches forth utilizing the Motorik 4/4 beat with the lysergic kosmische sonic textures of Cluster. With Heffernan (bass, guitars and drones) based in the Northeast of England and Pärk (synths, drones and loops) based in Colorado USA on the border with New Mexico -- the portal they opened up between these environments creates a travelogue that unites physical and inner space, a series of trance induced states rendered in vivid color, a delirious portal into the ether. "Harmonic Coast" opens and is a heady downtempo affair, an earthly vibration that slips effortlessly between peyote peaking trekking trips and Balearic sunset vibes. The somnambulistic drift of "The Sun" sets the stage with a series of shimmering, circular synth pulses where hidden details slowly emerge over multiple listens. Album closer "Fever Mirage" creates a clear-eyed appreciation of the pastoral beauty that surrounds us, it's a journey that summons up an occult-like dream of glacial arpeggios and whispering synths that pull your attention in to this hypnotizing listening experience. Sun Reflector is a collective sound in which a lot is allowed, and a lot is done. That combined with the compositional ingenuity where the heterogeneous timbres create a time travelled cosmic mysticism that summons up the spirits and visions of Harmonia, Cluster, Eno, and Phillip Glass. Shimmering and transcendent we present to you for your listening experience Sun Reflector.

BASS COMMUNION: The Itself of Itself CD (LUMB 036CD)
Steven Wilson is no stranger to composing music that appears to counter everything else before it in his catalogue. Bass Communion, his long running solo electronic project, is no exception to this perverse streak that apparently likes to turn all expectations upside down. The Itself of Itself, Bass Communion's first album for 12 years, skillfully pays testament to this. Long established as a purveyor of mostly atmospheric or ambient textures, the seven cuts that represent The Itself of Itself take detours from this approach in order draw as much from musique concrete, noise music, abstract electronics and uneasy listening. Whilst still rippled with the same shades of light and dark that can be found throughout all of Bass Communion's work, The Itself of Itself reveals a fascination with analogue sounds and, more importantly perhaps, "unwanted" analogue artefacts like tape hiss, wow and flutter, static noise, and sonic break-up, taking the music into a space at once different yet familiar. "Apparition 3" presents a stark nod to Wilson's established command of shifting textures steeped in penumbral gauze, while "Bruise" is akin to a space probe adrift and headed towards a white dwarf as all communication is reduced to a disturbing and indecipherable crackle. Meanwhile on the title track, a mellotron flute rusts and collapses in on itself in a way that renders it the very antithesis of the one deployed on "Strawberry Fields Forever." Everything adds up to a dynamic listening experience where unease, dread and comparatively claustrophobic torrents of sound make (un)natural bedfellows to moments of enchantment and serenity. Above all, The Itself of Itself sees Steven Wilson cutting his teeth on an album that's at once cinematic and moody whilst proving him to be a master in electronic music craftsmanship. It's an album that might surprise some of those who have thus far been paying attention to his work as Bass Communion, but setting out to please everyone was never part of his raison 'etre. The Itself of Itself catches Bass Communion spreading its weatherbeaten wings to embrace new strategies and a strong desire to journey elsewhere. Arriving in a wonderful Carl Glover designed deluxe cover and featuring a 24-page booklet of his photographs and an obi strip, The Itself of Itself arrives on Lumberton Trading Company as a CD pressed in an initial run of 1000 copies.

FINAL: What We Don't See CD (RM 4235CD)
Final is Justin Broadrick. While many might recognize him through his connections to legendary groups such as Godflesh and Techno Animal, or via his various solo guises (Jesu, JK Flesh, etc), Final charts an entirely different sonic terrain. Focused primarily on devolved landscapes of heavily treated guitar, Final sees Broadrick dwell in a foggy and subliminal zone where source materials are submerged, morphed and reborn as wholly different sound-beings. What We Don't See is a record that pierces into the realm of post-experience that exists beyond sense and sensation. It reaches towards the invisible, the inaudible and the intangible and imagines a soundtrack to this non-place. The record is cast in a hazy gauze of filtered noise within which seismic tremors of tone and harmony fold into each other. It is a record that breaths with a measure of deep dreams and an unfettered desire to dwell in sound. From Justin Broadrick: "The theme of this recording is the invisible world, and one's (my) need for it. It's necessary for me, this idea of the invisible world, if I am to function on a daily basis. I find comfort in knowing that this is all not just us here and now, that there's something else around us. That there's something within us, that isn't just this frail skin and bones and the immediate environments we drag ourselves around. I am sure since I was a child, that within me I am many, I am more than this. I surely can't be just this, so I am motivated by the fantasy and/or promise of more?" Created and produced by Justin K Broadrick. Mastered by Lawrence English at Negative Space.

JOBIN, FRANCE: Infinite Probabilities (Particle 2) CD (RM 4236CD)
From France Jobin: "Quantum mechanics unfolds an intricate realm of limitless possibilities and probabilities, eluding easy definition. It paints a picture of the universe vastly different from our perceptible reality. What captivates me is the lens through which I perceive sound, akin to the principles of quantum physics? I don't merely hear the audible, but rather, I extract elements to construct novel auditory experiences. My profound interest in science, particularly quantum mechanics, originates around 2008-2009 during a resurgence of enthusiasm for string theory, (10-33cm released on ROOM 40) hinting at the prospect of a comprehensive theory of everything. The notion of existing within 11 dimensions, as opposed to our familiar four, held a mesmerizing allure. Lacking a background in quantum mechanics intensified the challenge of my exploration, yet I stayed attuned to emerging theories, albeit at a surface level due to time constraints. The advent of the pandemic granted me the opportunity to immerse myself in the intricacies of quantum mechanics, with a particular focus on the bizarre phenomenon of quantum entanglement, which stands as one of the most enigmatic aspects of modern physics, alongside gravity. Embarking on this intellectual journey presented a steep learning curve, leaving me in a state of bewilderment for the initial six months. Yet, amid the confusion, I gleaned a profound insight: the intrinsic nature of probabilities within quantum mechanics means that feeling adrift and perplexed isn't a hindrance but rather an advantage. It becomes a preparation for the myriad possibilities and uncertainties that define this captivating and eccentric realm. Moving forward to 2021 brings me to the four sources of inspiration for the Entanglement project: the fluidity of time, the principle of entanglement, the Copenhagen interpretation and many worlds interpretation. Three iterations have been created so far with visual artist Markus Heckmann: Entanglement AV, Entanglement XR, Entanglement Dome, and finally, a fourth one, a series of four albums entitled Entangled Quantum States." All sounds recorded at various locations in Europe, Japan and South America, at MESS (Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio) and at EMS (Elektronmusikstudion, Stockholm). Cover image: Markus Heckmann.

VA: Postcards Vol. 1: D.I.Y and Indie Post-Punk from USA and UK 1979-1984 LP (SAMIZDAT 001LP)
Limited restock. Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad musical genre that emerged in 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians moved away from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, adopting instead a broader, more experimental approach that included a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and DIY ethos, but determined to break with rock clichés, artists experimented with styles such as funk, electronic music, jazz and dance music; dub and disco production techniques; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, film and literature. These communities have produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines. These three compilations are by no means "Best Of" or collections of chart hits. They are compilations that endeavor (and they do a good job) to take a wide-ranging look at the UK and American post-punk scene in the years from 1978 to 1984, but here almost everything stops in 1981, giving space to bands and artists that almost always didn't make it beyond the 45rpm mark. A representation of the true "Outside of Everything" of the era. 2024 repress. Sowing Records present a reissue of Hip Harp by Dorothy Ashby with Frank Wess, originally released in 1958. Born in Detroit in 1932, Dorothy Ashby can be easily recognized as the woman who gave the harp a jazz voice. In her hands, the harp, an originally classical instrument which seemed to just scare people, became a highly versatile swinging voice able to drive a whole jazz rhythm section. Recorded in 1958 by master Rudy Van Gelder and originally released on the Prestige label, Hip Harp is a perfect example of Ashby's artistry. At the head of a fine quartet featuring the great Frank Wess on flute, Herman Wright on bass, and master Art Taylor on drums, Ashby creates a unique combination of deeply jazz elements expressed through a totally new sound. GHIA: Curacao Blue LP (TAC 014LP)
2024 restock. The story about the lost recordings of Ghia continues: Following "At The Hilton" single, The Outer Edge present Curaçao Blue, the band's first full-length album. And it is simply mind-blowing, to say the least! The LP features ten unreleased tracks in a similar Balearic vein as featured on the single. Incredibly, it was only just a few months ago that these tracks were rediscovered on some old tapes by band members Lutz Boberg and Frank Simon. Could anyone imagine that two physics students from a small German town could create such beautiful, thrilling music in their home studio? Although the technical aspects in the creation of the band's earliest tracks may have been straightforward, the outcome is high-quality, creative, modern jazz-funk, with one step in the electro-funk genre due to the use of a drum machine and synthesizer basslines. The album features mostly 4-track recordings, based mainly on the musicians' weapons of choice: a DX21 keyboard (later updated to the legendary DX7) and a guitar. Many things had to be done live in just one take, though the artists were unafraid of using overdubbing techniques to weave their instrumental journeys. The DIY aesthetics just add more beauty and uniqueness to the songs and compositions, and the result is an extremely harmonic work of undeniable musicality. Ghia delivers Balearic jazz-funk at its finest. Though the music was recorded in Germany, Ghia had a true relationship with the Balearic region and effortlessly applied the vibes to their compositions. Previously unissued full-length album. Fully licensed. Recorded between 1985-1988. Includes 30x30 cm insert.

MELT BANANA: Fetch LP (AZ 009LP)
"From the whip-like crack of Yako's signature staccato vocals and impossible-to-memorize lyrics to the relentless overdrive tempo of their one-of-a-kind prog-core, Melt Banana have long resided in a cybertopia of their own devising where the limits of technology and human capability are old-world concerns as quaint and cumbersome as bartering with a blacksmith. The demos for Fetch, their first studio album since the severely fried pop-punk of 2007's Bambi's Dilemma, were completed in March 2011, but the Fukushima earthquake changed everything, including their ability to concentrate on recording. Which stopped completely. Once they felt ready to return to their music, they decided to approach the songs on a sound-by-sound basis, choosing each tone with meticulous attention to detail, affirming their personal connections, being themselves naturally and openly. Fetch scrapes glam shimmers off punk's outermost fringes and forges them into a rather intensely technical Deanscape packed with fantastical hybrids. Agata's guitar riffs, seemingly composed in tandem with skipping CD players, are more badass than ever, bright and fractured like the soundtrack for a CC-Hennix-scored biker flick. The album is juiced with electronics and post-rock production, tempering what could easily be a tiresome and predictable frenzy, yielding unexpected associations: Kate Bush climaxing on Walter White's blue meth; demos of late-period Wire playing metal run through Wasp synthesizers and Autotune; unripe wild lychees keeping time on an Ankgor Wat tin roof during a monsoon. This is a group that routinely excels at several kinds of impossible simultaneously, so of course any new challenge they come up with for themselves is sure to blow the doors off your Mini Cooper."

DOC SLEEP: Cloud Sight Fade LP (DE 298LP)
"Doc Sleep returns to Dark Entries with Cloud Sight Fade, an album of ethereal house and techno. Doc Sleep is the alias of DJ and producer Melissa Maristuen. Following 2023's Birds, her ambient and IDM-leaning debut album, Cloud Sight Fade shows Doc drawing on her years of queer clubbing to bring seven diverse tracks sitting between muscular New York house, Berlin twilight techno, and funky West-coast breakbeats. Production began in the Bay Area and was completed in Berlin; Maristuen says that this work became a love letter to the West Coast's magnificent natural landscape, the light of the Pacific sunrise. While draped in dreamlike textures and melodies, this is also a record about embodiment and the memories that live within corporeal forms. The powerful grooves on the breakbeat-inflected 'Lemon Zest' and the propulsive 'Cloud Sight Fade' remind listeners that dance music is for bodies dancing. Meanwhile, tracks like the sparkling album-closer 'Enchanted Static' or the brooding groover 'Water Sign' plunge listeners deeper into hypnotic depths. On Cloud Sight Fade, Doc Sleep guides through slumber and wakefulness, in and out of bodies, with the mastery of a seasoned DJ and clubgoer."

EMBRACE: Embrace LP (DIS 024LP)
2024 repress. Gold vinyl. "Faith and Minor Threat broke up within months of each other in 1983. During 1983/84 there was a general malaise in the Washington D.C. hardcore scene, which saw a lot of the founding bands and scene makers move to the sidelines as shows became increasingly violent and the attitude became increasingly mainstream. In the summer of '85 there was renewed spirit in D.C., often referred to as 'Revolution Summer.' This 'Revolution Summer' included a handful of bands that preferred smaller more intimate venues and focused on a more personal and introspective interpretation of punk rock. Embrace, which was formed by ex-Minor Threat member Ian MacKaye and three of the former members of Faith, was part of this renewal. The band played shows from the summer of 1985 until the spring of '86. This 12" LP was re-mastered in March 2009. Recorded in November, '85 and February, '86. Originally released in September 1987. BERMAN, DAVID: Actual Air Book (DC 198BK)
"Back in print for the first time this era is David Berman's Actual Air. Released in paperback in 1999 by the now-defunct Open City and praised everywhere in the then-ascendant print press industry (including names that still make waves today like The New Yorker and GQ), David Berman's first (and only) book of poetry was and is a journey though shared and unreliable memory. Uncannily inspired, Berman's poems walk through doors into rooms where one might hear 'I can't remember being born/and no one else can either/even the doctor who I met years later/at a cocktail party' (from 'Self-Portrait at 28'), or praise 'the interval called hangover/a sadness not co-terminous with hopelessness' (from 'Cassette Country') and 'that moment when you take off your sunglasses/after a long drive and realize it's earlier/and lighter out than you had accounted for' ('The Charm of 5:30'). At that time, Berman was called a modern-day Wallace Stevens and a contemporary of John Ashberry with his own logic, awareness of pop culture and sensitivity to the details of the post-postmodern world in his poems. Alongside his lyrics to a half-dozen infamous Silver Jews records, Actual Air endeared Berman to lovers of poetry, prose, and music alike. Poet James Tate said it best: 'It is a book for everyone.' And poet laureate Billy Collins could only add, 'This is the voice I've waited so long to hear.' The second edition of the hardcover version of Actual Air is limited to 1000 copies. Features of the second edition are: new larger dimensions and enlarged typeface, new dustjacket artwork variant, deluxe cloth boards, updated full-color endpapers, dust-jacket featuring a photo of the artist around the time of publication, and of course the poems that inspired all this fuss in the first place. HOWLIN' WOLF, MUDDY WATERS, & BO DIDDLEY: The Super Super Blues Band LP (JPR 033LP)
2021 restock, blue vinyl. "Super Super Blues Band started out merely as Super Blues, a conglomerate of blues pillars Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Little Walter. When Little Walter bowed out and was replaced by Howlin' Wolf, they rightfully threw another Super on the name, and went on to release this burning, irreverent and even sometimes hilarious set of drunken, wild-eyed electric blues. Long form jams roll on in a trance as the trio of blues legends flex egos, talking shit to each other, trading off leads and ducking blasts of unexpected wah-wah guitar lines. Songs are peppered with an incredible level of banter between the trio of bandleaders that predicts the call and response sing-talking of early hip hop, laced with random screams in the background that teeter between celebration and danger. That these three ever got into the same room together is a miracle, and that they produced something so intense, energetic and weird is another almost unbelievable feat. The record is special enough as a stand-alone document of this meeting/melting of the minds before you find out the backing band consists of Hubert Sumlin, Otis Spann and freaking Buddy Guy. Lordy. Might have needed one more 'super' in there."

LOSCIL // LAWRENCE ENGLISH: Colours Of Air LP (KRANK 236LP)
"The union of composers Lawrence English and Loscil aka Scott Morgan is seamless, sublime, and long overdue. Born of a conversation centered on the notion of 'rich sources' as a forge for electronic music, Colours Of Air is a collection of recordings of a century old pipe organ housed at the historic Old Museum in Brisbane, Australia, which were then processed, transformed, and elevated into eight majestic electro-acoustic threshold devotionals. The timbre of the instrument and spatial fluctuations of room tone infuse the music with a subdued, sacred feel, like vaulted light in a nave of stained glass. They describe the album as 'an iterative project, a reduction and eventual expansion,' sifting the swells and drones of the organ for every shivering shade of radiance. The tracks are named for the hue each piece suggests -- from the gauzy levitational miasma of 'Yellow' to the pulsing melancholic mirage of 'Violet' to the seething twilit sandstorm of 'Magenta.' Morgan and English are both adept at conjuring moods of muted grandeur, like landscapes veiled in dusk, still looming and luminous. Here their combined powers open pathways to heightened realms of deep listening and bewitching restraint, finding flickering infinities in ancient configurations of wind, brass, stone, and dust."

YOUNG GINNS: Young Ginns LP (LG 004LP)
"Young Ginns began in November 1991 when Unwound was staying at The Embassy house where Nation Of Ulysses guitarist Tim Green lived. Somehow around the coffee table, an idea was conceived to have a 'jam band' in the vein of the instrumental songs of Black Flag and other SST artists. Brandt Sandeno stuck with the drums while Justin Trosper went back to his previous role as a bass player with Green on guitar. A couple fun sessions happened, that sometimes sounded like Black Flag but more like the guitar player from NOU and some Unwound dudes. A few days later Unwound went on their long way back home to Olympia, WA. After NOU broke up, Green packed up, went west and settled in Olympia where Sandeno and Trosper lived. Sandeno had since left Unwound but he and Trosper were always looking for an excuse to play together. Since there was so much free creativity and time bouncing around in 1993 Olympia, the Young Ginns idea was easily reborn in the Red House basement where Green lived and was building up his next studio. Teenaged San Diego transplant Brett Frost decided that the band needed a frontman after witnessing a few practices and wiggled his way into the fold. A couple of local shows and a recording session at the Red House led to a malt liquor and Nyquil-fueled west coast tour with a 7" record fresh off the presses from Gravity records of San Diego. The return to Olympia saw the band writing and rehearsing a couple more new tunes and a recording with Pat Maley at Yo-Yo studios in the Capitol Theater in Olympia. The band split up shortly after as everyone decided to pursue other endeavors. Ironically, the band started as a pretty casual tribute jam band but it burned hotter and brighter like a typical hardcore band with Frost as the wild frontman. What began as a math rock fantasy transformed into a punk rock nightmare. Honeybear released a compilation of all the recordings on CD in 1998. This batch was freshly remixed and mastered by Tim Green at Louder Studios in the winter of 2023."

VILE CHERUBS: Lysergic Lamentations LP (LG 008LP)
"Falling somewhere between Soulside, Ignition, and The Chocolate Watchband, Vile Cherubs were a short-lived and puzzling band that for a brief window in 1986-88 managed to captivate, confuse, and annoy the D.C. punk scene. Consisting of high school classmates Tim Green, Jesse Quitlsund, and Ben Wides -- along with Green's childhood friend Seth Lorinczi -- the Vile Cherubs were more focused on the then-forgotten sounds of '60s garage rock and psychedelia than on Minor Threat. Being minors themselves, they likely would've remained trapped in the school-dance circuit were it not for Geoff Turner (Gray Matter/3), who took an interest in the band and recorded their two demos. That first tape caught the ear of D.C. space booker Cynthia Connolly, who despite her initial skepticism paired them with Didjits, Cynics, and other noteworthy bands. Rumors of a potential Dischord album built all through 1987, ending with mysterious suddenness after label co-owner Jeff Nelson dropped in on a rehearsal to find a miasma of LSD, alcohol, feedback, and vomit. Though the band released a posthumous LP in 1988, the original Geoff Turner demos explain why the D.C. scene briefly lost its shit over these teen ne'er-do-wells. Lovingly and exhaustively resuscitated by audio maestro Tim Green from the original multitrack tapes, Lysergic Lamentations is the Vile Cherubs at the height of their brief existence."

WOLVES AGAIN: Wolves Again 7" (LOV 096EP)
"Amidst various musical projects, Shelby Cinca reached out to his former bandmates with the idea of creating and instrumental album in the style of Frodus -- a desire that had never materialized during the band's active years. Despite the challenges of life and logistics, the project began to take shape as Nate and Shelby brainstormed and organized their ideas. They recalled an offer from their fellow DC friend and prolific musician, Aaron DC Edge, to provide raw drum tracks. Shelby accepted Aaron's offer to kickstart a rhythmic foundation, and soon the project came to life. Some tracks remained faithful to the original demos, while others underwent substantial editing. Eventually, songs began to take form in an organic manner, despite the geographical distance between the collaborators. Conceptually, the group aimed to craft a soundtrack for a post-human world, inspired by a cryptic phrase hidden in the artwork of Frodus's last album: 'when man dies, we become wolves again.' These songs conjure images of overgrown and ruined cities, the return of wildlife, and the interplay of light and darkness, peace and savagery, coexisting in the aftermath of humanity's downfall. Without the prominent narrative of anguished vocals, the vistas emerge in the mind's eye without barriers, allowing for a more subtle and profound exploration of the themes. This is Wolves Again."

KUKL was populated by survivors of the post-punk scene in Iceland in the early '80s, which is well documented in the film Rock in Reykjavik from 1982. The band was released by the Crass collective in London and featured members, apart from Birgir and Sigtryggur, like Guðlaugur Óttarsson, Einar Melax, Björk and Einar Örn, some of whom would become better known later in outfits like the Sugarcubes and their respective solo work and other collaborations. Sigtryggur has a long career in music, having worked with among others, Emiliana Torrini, Howie B, Les Negresses Vertes, Tomas R. Einarsson, Petur Ben, KK, Kaktus Einarsson, and many others. BATS & MICE: PS: Seriously LP (LOV 099LP)
"Sometimes, the best things take time to finish. In 2012, two of the founding members of the seminal punk trio Bats & Mice stepped into the studio to start work on their follow-up to 2010's Back In Bat EP. Then, between babies and careers, life happened, and the project went dark for almost a decade. Bats & Mice is a band that has quietly crept through the music world. Three members of Sleepytime Trio originally formed the band: Jonathan Fuller (Engine Down, Denali), Dave NeSmith (Rah Bras, Committees) and Ben Davis (MileMarker, Committees). They began writing songs together in a new style that pursued their hardcore roots coupled with a more dark and winding sense of melody. However, the music still maintained the energy and drive of their previous efforts. This line-up produced Bats & Mice's first work, a self-titled EP released on Lovitt Records in the fall of 2000, to critical acclaim. Friends Daron Hollowel and Ash Bruce from the band 400 Years joined for a stint in which 'Bats' wrote and released the full-length album entitled, Believe It Mammals, on Lovitt in the spring of 2002. That line-up toured to support the LP across the US, playing with Fugazi, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, 90 Day Men, Denali, and Gregor Samsa. In 2004, Luke Herbst joined the band on drums, and the band toured Europe in support of a new EP titled A Person Carrying a Handmade Paper Bag is Considered as a Royal Person. Jonathan Fuller rejoined the group and helped write and record the Back In Bat EP, released in 2010. Soon after, Mark Oates (from Wailin' Storms) took over the drums for Jonathan and helped write new songs as the band headed into the studio to record the basic tracks for an LP in 2012. Bats & Mice then shelved the material as life, marriages, children, and Covid ate away the years. In early 2023, the band reconvened in Chapel Hill's Warrior Sound to rework the original tracking and finish a ten-song full-length record. Named PS: Seriously, the finished LP is finally coming to light."

APOSTILLE: Prisoners Of Love And Hate LP (LSSN 087LP)
"Prisoners Of Love And Hate is an offering to community, to desires that imprison and liberate, to people in all their divinity and ugliness. Apostille -- aka Night School Records' captain Michael Kasparis -- presents his third album with a bang, a bursting ball of NRG, empathy and bristling living. Like its predecessor Choose Life, Prisoners was recorded in Full Ashram Celestial Garden in Glasgow with Lewis Cook (Free Love) through 2022. A nine-song treatise on pop music, trauma, ecstasy and the mundanities between the extremes, Kasparis takes on classic '80s synth pop, '90s house music, '00s trance, wistful balladry, and '70s power pop. The thread that runs through the album is a boundless energy, an openness to the moment, to living the pains and joys equally, open armed. This is a place of no judgement, of possibility, challenge and comfort. The nine songs on Prisoners can be read as separate ruminations on the feelings and desires that imprison our experience. Through it all the narrator struggles against them, transported and fooled by love and longing, peering through the bars of anguish, flailing in a cell of emotions. A recognition that all ecstasy has tragedy laced within is a theme that is sewn throughout the LP. It's a testament to the new confidence in Kasparis's songwriting, sure, but also to the enduring power of people to come together in mutual dependence and love. If ecstasy is always laced with tragedy, the Prisoners of Love and Hate can always reach out between the bars to meet in the middle, the eternal now."

MCFARLANE REALITY GUEST, J.: Whoopee LP (LSSN 089LP)
"From out of nowhere -- if nowhere is the febrile, warped and twilit imagination of Julia McFarlane --comes Whoopee, the second album by J. McFarlane's Reality Guest. Whoopee is an esoteric, kaleidoscopic movie in music form directed by Julia McFarlane and co-conspirator Thomas Kernot. Full of life, breakbeats and smokey vignettes on the fragile nature of interpersonal relationships, Whoopee is a stylistic evolution from everything McFarlane has done before. Surreal, beautiful in parts and replete with the aching wisdom McFarlane's songwriting has always promised, this Reality Guest pulls back the curtain on a whole scene of naked truth. Recorded in Melbourne in bursts since the release of 2019's Ta Da, Whoopee features a new sound palette and band member in Kernot. The duo dive deep into electronic pop tropes, mining digital synths, samples, breakbeats and deep bass grooves, largely dispensing with live instrumentation. If Ta Da took twists and turns with your expectations, offering a Dada-ist, monochromatic take on pop music, Whoopee is McFarlane's subterranean love-sick pinks, reds, greens, purples and blues. Whoopee is both more accessible than previous Reality Guest work and somehow more obfuscated. Where the production on Ta Da was dry, sharp and strange, this Reality Guest is blurred, almost smeared with the effluvium of '90s/'00s culture and existence. Through it all, it's hard to deny the undeniable pull of the songs."

DEL VECCHIO, GARY: Buzzin' LP (EZRDR 163LP)
"The incendiary proto hard rock and ambitious epic journeys this album delivers are all the more uncanny and devastating when you realize Gary Del Vecchio was a mere 16 years old when the title track 'Buzzin' was unleashed! Even more astonishing is how far he travelled over the next five years, documented in this brilliant selection of nine tracks from the classic daze of early 1970s underground rock. Gary's music grabs you immediately and grows over time. The guitar action is incredible, shards of sound flying free yet hitting the bullseye continuously, vocals confident with none of the macho posturing that ages poorly in much early hard rock. These tracks are all vividly recorded and meticulously mixed in a way that balances fiery performance and intelligent structure to maximum effect. The bass and drumming here are phenomenally inventive and propulsive, the several players involved across the album nail it in their support of Gary's vision. This is rock music born in the 'anything is possible' life affirming energy of the late '60s right on time with where the most enduring artists of the early '70s took it. The music on this album is both uncompromising and accessible. In particular, the two long tracks 'Wasted King' and 'Starman' have all the moves needed to grab fans of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the likes by the throat and brain in the extended progressive epic department. Buzzin' opens with a smattering of studio party chatter and instantly grips you with a tough groove, heavy riffage and a gnarly dual guitar break sounding like what the words are saying about flying free and high. Gary cites contemporary local heroes Joe Walsh and Phil Keaggy as inspiration."

EARLY MOODS: A Sinner's Past CD (EZRDR 180CD)
"Early Moods' sophomore album A Sinner's Past is the ultimate dosage of classic early '70s proto-metal, '90s grunge riffing and timeless songwriting delivered with an explosive youthful energy. The Los Angeles area quartet burst onto the scene fully formed with a sound that somehow simultaneously merged gritty underground street doom with slick 'big box' heavy metal melodies on their self-titled Riding Easy debut album in 2022. And it's the band's highly skilled musicianship paired with exquisite aesthetic taste -- in addition to their killer live show -- that has made them an immediate popular favorite. A Sinner's Past takes those elements several steps higher with a nod to Soundgarden's huge sonic depth, the low-mid fuzz drenched tones of Sabotage and classic '70s melodies and structures of Uli Roth-era Scorpions. The latter in particular inspiring the album's intricate tonal shifts and shimmering twin leads. The album was recorded near the band's home base in Pico Rivera, CA by Allen Falcon of Birdcage Studios, who also mixed their debut album. Early Moods was founded in 2015 by guitarist Eddie Andrade and vocalist/keyboardist Alberto Alcaraz after a few years of playing in thrash and death metal projects before the two realized that the classic doom that they'd grown up with was what they really wanted to explore. Going through a few lineup changes while delving deeper into the diverging influences that were calling, Early Moods arrived at the sound and lineup that grew their fanbase locally. EARLY MOODS: A Sinner's Past LP (EZRDR 180LP)
LP version. The band released their debut EP Spellbound in 2020 on German label Dying Victim Productions, followed by their self-titled debut full length on Riding Easy Records in 2023. Early Moods is Oscar Hernandez on lead guitar, Chris Flores on drums, Elix Felciano on bass, Alcaraz on vocals/synth and Andrade on guitar."

GUIDED BY VOICES: Same Place The Fly Got Smashed LP (SCAT 090LP)
"Originally released in 1990, Same Place The Fly Got Smashed was Guided By Voices' fourth album in as many years. Roughly a concept album about an alcoholic named Joker Bob who goes on a bender, someone dies, and Bob gets the chair ('the electrifying conclusion'). From the moment the needle drops, the listener is served notice that this isn't going to be an easy listen, as an argument taped off of a TV cuts to a basement recording of a lone, blaring electric guitar with someone yelling over the top. But for those brave enough to pass the opening hazards, there are wonders within. This particular album has come to be held in higher and higher regard by fans, and they are correct to consider it a top-tier release. The story and sequence have a flow, and consideration for approachability is optional. Many of the crudest tracks reveal themselves as necessary stitches in the album's tapestry. Yet it also contains all-time greats like 'Drinker's Peace,' 'Mammoth Cave,' the epic 'Local Mix-Up/Murder Charge,' and of course 'Pendulum' with its immortal opening line: 'Come on over tonight, we'll put on some Cat Butt and do it up right!' -- a rare break in the clouds on one of the band's darkest albums. This reissue, like the previous ones in this series, is a mostly faithful reproduction of the original pressing of 500 on the band's own Rocket #9 label. And like the others, the virgin RTI vinyl is housed in a thick tip-on jacket, and includes Robert Pollard's original handwritten lyric insert."

AYCOCK & JOSHUA MASSAD, DYLAN GOLDEN: Two Improvisations LP (SCTR 065LP)
"The first full length LP by Joshua Massad and Dylan Aycock. Massad is a tabla player living in India and studying under Zakir Hussain. Massad and Aycock came together in Tulsa to record live at the legendary Church Studio which was founded by Leon Russell in the '70s. Over a few nights they captured some moments in the studio before it came under new ownership and just before Joshua moved to India. From Aquarium Drunkard: 'Aycock improvising on 12-string with Massad accompanying tabla and sitar. A flowing river of sound, a meeting of the minds. The little touches that Dylan's brother Jesse Aycock adds (bits of synth) really sweeten the deal as well.'"

C. DIAB: Imerro (Color Vinyl) LP (TU 005LE-LP)
Color vinyl version. "Caton Diab creates soundscapes that evoke the spectacular wilderness of his childhood home in northern Vancouver Island. Incorporating experimental textures, folk overtones and tape manipulations, Diab uniquely finds the unseen spaces in-between, and fittingly dubs his creations 'post-classical grunge.' Imerro explores new sonic realms and is the culmination of a sound world that Diab has built up since the critically acclaimed No Perfect Wave (2016) and subsequent releases Exit Rumination (2018), White Whale (2020) and In Love & Fracture (2021). The Wire calls it 'ambient music in the best sense -- music for living, which can be both non-invasive and immersive.' Imerro was recorded in late July and August of 2021 at Risque Disque Studio in Cedar, BC, during the summer's unprecedented second 'heat dome,' which saw temperatures soaring to over 40 degrees. Recorded with regular collaborator and engineer Jonathan Paul Stewart, the pair journeyed by boat to the studio to a place with minimal distraction with a plan of 'simple ecstatic improvisation.' Diab explains: 'I wanted to place myself in a space for creation with little thematic pretense, with the belief that music 'shows its face' as you move along. I would pick up an instrument, whether I had experience playing it or not, and make a sound. If it wanted to be played, it would play.'"
