DAVIS, RICHARD: Safety Net EP 12" (ACC 003EP)
Richard Davis is a gentleman with a proper musical history moving from London to Berlin in the late '90s and having some spectacular releases under his belt as a producer, composer, and a singer. As a vocalist, Richard has collaborated with, among others, Swayzak, Trentemøller, and Bomb The Bass. On Safety Net EP, he turns his composing skills back to the future and his voice and songs sound like post new wave meets 1980s Scott Walker. Alongside fantastic remixes by Hamburg's Ada, as well as Norwegian Berlin dude Jarle Bråthen, this EP is a masterful piece of modern pop music.

LIDO: Everything 2LP (BEC 5543069)
For someone who went from growing up in a secluded Norwegian forest to producing for some of the biggest hip-hop and pop megastars on the planet, Peder Losnegård has had quite the journey. It was through a series of remixes that Lido catapulted into the sets of the most high-profile DJs around the globe, capturing the ears of numerous notable tastemakers. Reworking acts like Disclosure and Bill Withers, the producer set the internet ablaze with talk of his four-note piano tag and speculation as to who was underneath the moniker. His playful, restless musicality saw him adopt an array of aliases -- but he'll keep those under wraps for now. Debuting with 2014's I Love You EP (BEC 5161926), followed by the Superspeed EP (2015), and remixes of Banks, Alt-J, and MØ, Lido's anti-formulaic style emerged. His tracks bounce from one idea to another voraciously, but always with that clear Lido stamp. You don't just get a drum and a bassline on a track of his; you're more likely to get an entire string or brass section that elevates his sound to cinematic heights. Comes on black-and-blue splattered LPs; Comes in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner-sleeves.

GROSSKOPF, HARALD: Synthesist LP (BB 158LP)
Repressed; LP version. "Harald Grosskopf was in his early twenties when LSD 'blew [his] reality away,' as he recalls. Born in Hildesheim in 1949, he had previously drummed in fairly conventional rock bands, most recently for Wallenstein. Their label-boss Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser was fond of facilitating jam sessions for musicians on his Ohr und Pilz label, often supplying his 'cosmic couriers' with LSD (unbeknown to them, on occasion). In one such session, the drug inspired something of an epiphany in Grosskopf: 'There I was playing the drums when, in the midst of my euphoria, I realized that I had been imitating other drummers. Suddenly a voice spoke to me: stop trying to sound like Billy Cobham or Ginger Baker. From that moment on I felt liberated, free to drum without having to shine in a particular role.' Having discovered his own musical identity, Harald Grosskopf understood that a standard rock combo was not the ideal conduit through which to express it. Grosskopf: 'I was completely in thrall to electronic music and the total freedom that it offered. This was the music I wanted to create. I knew it would be a success, the energy levels were so high.' Grosskopf consequently left Wallenstein. 'I fell into a hole at first, wondering what I was going to do. So I sold my prized drum kit and used the money to buy a guitar, amp and echo device.' A few days later, the doorbell rang. It was Manuel Göttsching, on his way back to Berlin from a tour of France. They knew each other from Berlin's electronic scene and recording sessions for the likes of Ash Ra Tempel. Göttsching invited Grosskopf to sign up for his new project Ashra and the rest is history: Ashra (Grosskopf, Gottsching, Lutz Ulbrich alias Luul) released a series of successful albums in the years that followed. It was not until the summer of 1979, however, that he finally felt ready to release a solo album. Synthesist comprises eight instrumentals, recorded largely by Grosskopf on his own. His melodies, carried along by synthesizers and drums, were reminiscent of works by Berlin electronic friends such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, as well as those 'cosmic' sessions of the early 1970s -- yet each melody retains a unique timbre. Synthesist is thus regarded as a classic by electronic music enthusiasts all over the world, evoking a thrilling musical era of the past with equal capacity to excite today." --Christoph Dallach

CLUSTER: Konzerte 1972/1977 LP+CD (BB 240LP)
Repressed; LP version with CD. The two authorized recordings presented on Konzerte 1972/1977 vividly conjure up the atmosphere, perhaps even the magic, of a Cluster performance back in the day. One took place in 1977 during a science fiction festival in Metz (France). The other dates back to an earlier show in Hamburg's Fabrik venue. Cluster played three gigs in the city in 1971/1972, including the one partially included on 1972's Cluster II (LR 335LP). Cluster shows routinely lasted six hours or more, luring both the band and the audience into a state of intoxication, no doubt acutely enhanced by the intake of certain substances. The buzzwords of the moment were: psychedelic, magical, ritualistic, corresponding more or less to the Dionysian hedonism which pervades certain styles of contemporary music culture today. It is worth noting this context as useful background when listening to the live recordings presented here. In the beginning, Cluster's music was rough, brutal, and spontaneous, created with the most rudimentary tools. Unlike many of their colleagues in this pioneering age, Cluster did not use any synthesizers, sequencers, or high-end amps. But this proved to be their strength, rather than a disadvantage. Roedelius and Moebius played in the truest sense of the word, untroubled by mechanical processes. They used their machines but were not dependent on them. Intuition was the dominant force, the risk of potential failure was readily understood to be as much a part of their vibrant art as success. Perfection had become a concept associated with convention. Indeed, anyone who was lucky enough to witness Cluster play in the 1970s will testify that things sometimes went badly wrong. But mostly they did not, and then the real magic was tangible. A utopian, previously undiscovered world of sound was created in the presence of the beholder. The sound quality of these two documents is average. A successful performance was considered more important than a perfect recording thereof. As listeners, this should be accepted today. Konzerte 1972/1977 provides a short journey into the nascent heart of Cluster's creative universe, just after the big bang.

ARMSTRONG/SCOTT FRASER, CRAIG: Rosa Morta LP (CMAR 001LP)
The first vinyl edition of Craig Armstrong and Scott Fraser's Rosa Morta, released on CD in 2016 (CMAR 001CD). From the outset, Craig Armstrong and Scott Fraser decided their collaboration would be based on an electronic aesthetic: "We intentionally limited ourselves almost entirely to using vintage synthesizers, modern hardware synths and soft synths. The use of electronic bass and piano were the only exception to this rule. As a composer who regularly works with orchestras this was of course liberating and fun. Out of mutual fascination with early synthesizers from a young age this was often the catalyst for the beginning of each track. Each track was composed within one day often without much change thereafter. This gives the tracks an improvised feel. We also gave no limitation to the length of the tracks; they are as long as felt necessary or as short as they demanded. The direct melodic and immediacy of impact was purely the result of each working day and what felt right at the time. Musically we are influenced by electronic music from throughout the decade but only subconsciously after a lifetime of listening and playing. As composers, we have written in several genres and feel all musicians should feel free to express themselves whether in the abstract, tonal, experimental, song improvisation etc." Two tracks were used in the soundtrack to Peter Mullan's 2010 film NEDS, a film about gang culture in the 1970s in Glasgow. NASTIA & EINZELKIND: In The Mix: Cocoon Ibiza (2017) 2CD (CORMIX 056CD)
The annual Cocoon Ibiza mix is back with another bang with the essential 2017 edition mixed by two top talents, Nastia and Einzelkind. Nastia is one of the hottest DJs in the world right now. The Ukrainian is headlining clubs and festivals around the globe and showcasing not only great technical skills, but also a real breadth and depth of techno knowledge. Focusing on DJing rather than production, Nastia has also run her own festival, Strichka, and has been resident at key clubs Arma17, Fuse, and Ampere. As such she is a perfect fit for this job. Kicking off with vital veterans 100 Hz, she wastes no time in getting down to a thumping, jazz-tinged groove. From there, techno pioneers like Luke Slater sit next to d&b don Calibre and Detroit legends like Terrence Dixon. The resulting mix is tight and cohesive, and journeys through acid, jacking drum tracks, and driving stuff that never lets up. Taking care of the second disc is Einzelkind, the German who runs three labels including JAX and Pressure Traxx, and for more than a decade has been releasing on Get Physical, Playhouse, and Cécille, amongst others. He is a no-nonsense DJ who has played the likes of fabric and Space, and as such, has helped put his hometown of Frankfurt on the underground dance map. His selections call upon plenty of his own tracks, both solo and produced, with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Robin Scholz, and Markus Fix. The resulting 70-odd minute mix is more stripped back and cerebral than the first. It is always married to a slick underlying groove and is embellished with minimal synths and brain-melting pads that work perfectly in the late night and freaky hours in the club. Always keeping you on your toes, it ducks and dives, bobs and weaves in fluid fashion, and is a nice heady yin to the more physical yang of disc one. Once again, both of these mixes embody what it is to head to the legendary Cocoon party at Amnesia each Monday of an Ibiza summer. Also features: Theorem, Plastic, Slam, Sanasol, Bernard Badie, Oscar Schubaq, Kuniyuki Takahashi, Cobblestone Jazz, Pacou, Present Perfect, Differ-Ent, DJ Bone, John Daly, Implosive Inc., Hot City Orchestra, Charlotte T., and Rhythm Factory.

PREHN QUARTET, TOM: Axiom CD (CVSD 019CD)
2015 release. A reissue of arguably the rarest LP of European free jazz, Axiom, recorded in 1963 for the Swedish label Sonet. Test pressings were released to the musicians, but they were not approved and the label never printed more than the two first copies. Tom Prehn's music, which is exclusively known from a 1967 release that was reissued on the Unheard Music Series, is not only impossibly uncommon, it is also exceptionally wonderful, featuring an extended tenor saxophone solo by Frits Krogh that is clearly influenced by Sonny Rollins but has a unique character. The rhythm section is deep into non-metrical time, something unusual in a European context before 1965, and comparisons to Cecil Taylor are valid, though Prehn's playing has little in common with the American master, exploring chords and clusters rather than linear runs. The two tracks of the original LP, mastered from both extant copies of the test master, are augmented by a single track from 1966, never before released. Personnel: Frits Krogh - tenor saxophone; Tom Prehn - piano; Poul Ehlers - bass; Finn Slumstrup - drums. Recorded in Copenhagen, October 13th, 1963. Mastered at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago, January 2015. Produced by John Corbett.

BROTZMANN/VAN HOVE/BENNINK: 1971 CD (CVSD 020CD)
2015 release. Recorded at the height of their powers as the leading free jazz trio in Europe, 1971 includes some of the hottest and heaviest music ever made by Peter Brötzmann, starting with an inflammatory, incandescent 26-minute live track recorded at the New Jazz Meeting auf Burg Altena. Only available on a nearly-impossible-to-find LP sampler issued at the time by the festival, this marks the first appearance of "Just for Altena" on CD. Two more tracks come from pristine studio recordings made shortly before the festival, and they show an entirely different side of the trio, with delicate and harmonically intricate work by the Belgian pianist Fred Van Hove and typically wide ranging and mondo offerings from Han Bennink, at the time when the Dutch percussionist was using a huge, ragtag setup with metallic flotsam and jetsam augmenting his traditional kit. Cover image and design by Peter Brötzmann. Mastered at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago, August, 2014; Produced by John Corbett.

MCPHEE, JOE: Alone Together CD (CVSD 021CD)
2015 release. In his upstate New York secret laboratory, home-based in Poughkeepsie, Joe McPhee diligently documented his activities throughout the '70s, with the help of Craig Johnson, the producer who started CjRecord Productions as an outlet for McPhee's music. Among the unreleased tapes waxed in that span, Alone Together is unique and especially beautiful. Like Sound On Sound (CVSD 005CD, 2010), these recordings make use of multitrack recording, overdubbing McPhee upon McPhee, however where those earlier recordings had an experimental tendency, the Alone Together tracks were more compositional in nature, allowing the multi-instrumentalist to build and sculpt each piece, creating complete wind ensembles one track at a time. In 1974 and then again in a longer session in 1979, McPhee recorded in concise solo, duo, and trio contexts, and in more extensive brass and reed quartets -- all McPhee, all the time. Going head-to-head with the best of the saxophone foursomes of the era, McPhee is a one-man-World Saxophone Quartet, his probing investigations and lyrical statements as incisive and insightful as those of his best-known recordings. McPhee's own enthusiasm for these never-before-heard recordings betrays their significance in his large and ever-mounting discography. Corbett Vs. finally make them available. Recorded by Craig Johnson in Poughkeepsie, New York, from 1974-1979. Cover photograph by Christina Ramberg, Remastered at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago, in 2014. c. 1974, courtesy of the Estate of Christina Ramberg and Corbett vs. Dempsey; Produced by John Corbett.

LYONS, JIMMY: Push Pull 2CD (CVSD 022CD)
2016 release. A reissue of Jimmy Lyons's Push Pull, originally released on Hat Hut Records in 1979. Long known as Cecil Taylor's most reliable and loyal colleague, alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons has a select discography as a leader, and among its best entries is Push Pull, originally issued by Hat Hut Records as a massive three LP set. Recorded during a single marathon performance at the Collective for Living Cinema in New York in 1978, Push Pull features five extended pieces, all by Lyons, with his working quintet that included his wife Karen Borca on bassoon, Hayes Burnett on bass, Munner Bernard Fennell on cello, and Roger Blank on drums. Jolting, quicksilver free jazz with terse themes and brilliant interplay, the music is quintessential Lyons -- searching, pliant, and sincere. Remastered from the original tapes, this first reissue of Push Pull compiles the original tracks -- two of which were split to accommodate the 20-minute limit of LP -- into their original full-length, fitting the whole program onto two CDs, lovingly repackaged featuring the original Klaus Baumgärtner cover. Recorded by Karen Borca on May 6, 1978 at the Collective for Living Cinema in New York. Photos by Ken Brunton and H.L. Lindenmaier; Cover by Klaus Baumgärtner. Remastered at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago, 2015; Tapes transferred at Chicago Mastering Service, 2015; Reissue produced by John Corbett.

HARDE, STAFFAN: Staffan Harde CD (CVSD 024CD)
2015 release. A reissue of Staffan Harde's self-titled album, originally released on Svenska Jazzriksförbunded Records (SJR) in 1972. Based on the tiny Swedish fishing island of Smogen, guitarist Staffan Harde created a wholly unique and wondrous approach to his instrument, documented assiduously on hand-made reel-to-reel tapes and this lone LP from 1972, which features Harde solo and with small groups. His accomplices included pianist Lars Sjösten, bassist Lars-Urban Helje, and the acclaimed percussionist Bengt Berger, one of Don Cherry's close associates. The music presented on this extremely rare record is unusually singular. With an unadorned guitar tone, simple and straightforward, and low action, Harde's slinky, spidery runs and knotty, weirdly shaped chords have a surprisingly fresh sound four decades after he recorded them, with heavy chromaticism and a defiant rhythmic freedom. Basically unknown since this lone release, which he thought would gain more traction than it did, Harde retreated to work in a bakery on the island. A testament to both his strangeness and his brilliance, the eponymous LP has never before been reissued. Corbett Vs. Dempsey worked with Harde's family and saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, a huge Harde fan who lovingly produced the CD reissue for Corbett Vs. Dempsey. Photography by Björn Lindelöw. Remastered at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago, 2015; Produced by Mats Gustafsson and John Corbett.

Dempsey present Red Chrysanthemums, a previously unreleased live recording of solo performances by Smith, documented in Los Angeles in December of 1977. CALVIN AND DEVIN JOHNSTON, BRIAN: Some Hours CD (CVSD 026CD)
2016 release. At the end of his time in Chicago, in 1999, Brian Calvin recorded a batch of new songs with poet Devin Johnston. Designed to be an album, mostly recorded and mixed by Jim O'Rourke, who also plays bass and contributes background vocals on some cuts, they were never released, languishing in the vaults for almost two decades. Calvin and Johnston had both been members of USA, the band that recorded an LP and an EP for Drag City in the two years before this music was recorded. On the occasion of The Meditations (2016), Calvin's retrospective survey of the Chicago years, he and Johnston returned to the music and selected the keepers for a wonderful five-song CD EP titled Some Hours. Sparse and beautifully arranged, funny and poignant, they recall a time when people were debating the Windy City's role in "post-rock" and folk-infused singing, and songwriting was melding with all sorts of other musical input, from Vandermark to Van Dyke Parks. "Noon", "March And April", "All We Know So Far", and "Three Walls" were recorded and mixed by Jim O'Rourke in Chicago, March 1999; "Goodbye" was recorded and mixed by Paul Oldham in Shelbyville, Kentucky, July 1999. All tracks were mastered by Konrad Strauss. Drawing by Brian Calvin.

WILSON, PHILLIP: Esoteric CD (CVSD 027CD)
2016 release. The first ever reissue of Phillip Wilson's Esoteric, originally released on Hat Hut Records in 1979. In November 1977 and May 1978, months before drummer Phillip Wilson recorded his great LP Duet with trumpeter Lester Bowie for the Improvising Artists Inc. label (1978), Wilson hit the studio for Esoteric, a recording of solos and duets with cornetist Olu Dara. Wilson (1941-1992) was one of the key percussionists in creative music, the Art Ensemble of Chicago's early trapsman, one third of the fusion band Full Moon, and an all-around fountain of invention and sensitivity. In addition to his work in the jazz and improvised music realms, he was a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and did session work for Stax Records in the '70s. The little known LP Esoteric, which was issued on Hat Hut Records as their twelfth release, finds Wilson in an extremely intimate mode, sometimes exploring the sonority of his kit, sometimes extrapolating on a beat, and on several tracks working with his comrade Olu Dara, one of the great figures of the loft era and a wonderfully polymath musician. Together they conjure more than an avant-garde drum and bugle corps, Wilson's decisive touch and Dara's exploratory voice stretching all the way out on three dedications to Mr. Bowie. A rare taste of what the masterful Wilson does in the driver's seat, Esoteric has been remastered from the original tapes and features Klaus Baumgärtner's original cover design. Personnel: Phillip Wilson - percussion; Olu Dara - trumpet, horn (serpent). Recorded in Paris by Jef Gilson, from 1977-1978. Photo by Thierry Trombert. Production coordination by Craig Johnson of CjR Productions; Remastered by Alex Inglizian at Experimental Sound Studio, 2015; CD reissue produced by John Corbett.

LOWE, ROBERT AIKI AUBREY: Levitation Praxis Pt 4 LP (DDS 025LP)
Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe's incredible experiments with Harry Bertoia's sound sculptures are here documented on this beautiful new edition for Demdike Stare's DDS imprint, coinciding with his appearance on Semtember 2017's issue of The Wire magazine. Lowe is something of a polymath; having started out as part of math rock outfit 90 Day Men and doom metal trio Om, he progressed to forge his own solo work (often under the Lichens moniker), as well as a whole slew of collaborations, including work with Johann Johannsson on scoring both Arrival (2016) and Sicario (2015), an acclaimed album with Ariel Kalma for RVNG Intl's FRKWYS series, plus active involvement in site-specific video art and sound installations. His most recent work under his own name has seen him release diverse music for Type, Latency, More Than Human, and, of course, DDS who have, with this album, presented what might just be the most beautiful Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe artefact thus far. In 2016, Lowe was commissioned by New York's museum of Arts and Design to contribute to a Harry Bertoia exhibition, which he undertook alongside video director Johann Rashid. He was asked to create sound recordings with Sonambient sculptures; metal rods and gongs that produce highly distinct, resonant sounds when struck, brushed, or touched. Beginning in 1968, Bertoia set up an eighteenth-century stone barn on his property in Barto, Pennsylvania, to house these sculptures and from which he would go on to record works for his highly collectable Sonambient label, as recently documented on Important Records' breathtaking box set (IMPREC 419CD, 2016) and reissue series. Lowe was given full access to the barn, beautifully filmed footage of which can be found on YouTube. Lowe's work with these sculptures is quite unlike anything you might have heard from those original Bertoia recordings. Instead of serendipitous improvisation, Lowe weaves his way through the sculptures on a path that was mapped out in advance, imbuing them with a more "composed" and arranged feel. As well as that familiar and distinct sound palette, he subtly manipulates and feeds in vocal layers that take proceedings into ever more ethereal and haunting dimensions. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton.

GILA: Pick Six EP 12" (DEV 001EP)
Denver's Gila debuts on Benji B's Deviation Music with Pick Six EP. Building on the territory explored on Genkidama EP (XLT 774EP, 2016), Pick Six EP sees Gila continue to toy with hard-body US rap production techniques and sound palettes. From the sino tones of fluttery opener "Swirl Suit" to booming, 808 heaters like title-track "Pick Six", this is an EP redefines the boundaries of rap-inspired club music. Gila plays with atmosphere too, none more so on ghoulish and pensive "Psycho Dabber" or the rippling "Frost On Leaf", spotlighting a deftness in and around the rougher edges of his work.

BOSAINA: New York April-July 2013 / Two Names Upon The Shore LP (CREP 045LP)
Collection of two thoughtful EPs by Cairo based artist Bosaina. Bosaina is a Syrian/Egyptian singer, songwriter, and producer known for her work in the Kairo Is Koming collective, as well as her involvement in music-space-turned-club-night VENT. Her autobiographical work takes on a magical insular quality through field recordings and sentimentally driven compositions that unfold in stolen time. On both EPs, presented here, her love affair with cinema, interrupted by decaying urban life -- New York April-July 2013 -- and literature -- Two Names Upon The Shore -- serve as the focal points for her intimate productions; fragmented and wistful soundscapes that combine her affection for the piano with ambient textures from sea-shore to life underground. A unique album to get lost into on long summer nights.

NILSEN, BJ: Massif Trophies LP (EMEGO 233LP)
BJNilsen is a composer and sound artist based in Amsterdam. His work primarily focuses on the sounds of nature and how they affect humans. Recent work has explored the urban acoustic realm and industrial geography in the Arctic region of Norway and Russia. His original scores and soundtracks have been featured in theater, dance performances, and film. Celebrating 27 years as a recording artist, Massif Trophies is his first solo release for Editions Mego. In 2015, he set off on a month-long hiking trip in Gran Paradiso to explore the acoustic environments in the alpine landscape. Drawn to the monotonous and physical effort that mountains and high altitudes contribute, this became one of the main inspirations for Massif Trophies, reflecting upon the perception of the landscape during several hours of physical difficulty, let alone rapid weather changes, horizontal thunderstorms, and rock avalanches. Massif Trophies is also about the scope of details and perception of the path and the myth of the mountain as the accursed or sacred place. The five pieces contain narratives based on experiences and recordings from the trip. All source material recorded in Gran Paradiso, July 2015; Engineered at Odd Phasing and Echoes, Amsterdam NL; Photography by BJNilsen. Includes download card.

JAEGER, KASSEL: Aster 2LP (EMEGO 235LP)
The frontier for French electroacoustic mystical music has traversed much ground since Pierre Schaeffer shuffled on the past and laid out a map without borders or designated ground. Seventy years in this land of the fried, there are a plethora of Ideas and ongoing potential coming from all corners of the globe. Inheriting the wisdom of past masters whilst forging a signature style of his own, Kassel Jaeger sits as one of the premier explorers of these unknown worlds today. Comprised recently recorded tracks, Kassel Jaeger presents a work of revisits and re-workings, one which acts as a hinge in both closing this particular chapter, whilst opening up the windows to a new sound world. In Aster, rich deep music is replete with dark ambient sonorities swirling amongst intense buzzing tones. Often chilling and ominous, this is a fearless music with abstracted corners and dynamic leverage. Unafraid to embed itself in the ongoing whirlpool of sonic progress. Jaeger's output remains a thrilling body of exploration and ongoing transformation. Photos by Ende Wieder; Design by Stephen O'Malley.

SHIT AND SHINE: Some People Really Know How To Live LP (EMEGO 238LP)
Shit And Shine's sidestep from percussion-led bunny rabbit rock ensemble performance based glee to ultimate heavy fools of the sticky dancefloor remains one of the more inspiring turn around's in recent years. With highly acclaimed releases on Editions Mego, Diagonal, Riot Season, and others, Shit And Shine have wasted no time clearing away the rubbish whilst cutting up their own path towards giddy bass-heavy shape-shifting dance mutations. Snapping the twigs of disco, hurling clouds of exquisite dissonance, mangling modulations, boiling beats, twisting tweaks... this is a crew that will throw anything at the wall, and you. Some People Really Know How To Live presents a machine music built for the house, the street, the beat. For now, for never. In paradise, all (earlybird) tickets are free and as you face your maker it is Shit And Shine who will truly set you free. TONE, YASUNAO: AI Deviation #1, #2 CD (EMEGO 241CD)
Yasunao Tone on AI Deviation #1, #2: "I have had an idea if I apply the neural network to create my sound work for long time. When I had a performance at Centre Pompidou with Peter Rehberg and other friends I tried to talk about the idea with a French guy from IRCAM. But, he couldn't understand my idea, which by using neural network the sound I create would never have any repetitions. That was 2002 and I had to wait until 2015 when I had a grant from New York State Council on the Arts through ISSUE Project Room, then its director Lawrence Kumpf applied for my new work. The grant finally made possible for making my cherished idea, the neural network piece, reality. I had talked about the idea with Prof. Tony Myatt at Surrey University, UK and he developed the software for the piece with a team included Dr. Paul Modler. At the lab in the University a series of my performances of my MP3 Deviation were captured and used to train Kohonen Neural Networks to develop artificial intelligences that simulate my performances. Hence a birth of new piece AI Deviations. I had a premiere at ISSUE Project Room on June 9th, 2016 and the venue was more than packed and here is the performance of the piece." Recorded at ISSUE Project Room, Brooklyn, June 9th, 2016 by Bob Bellerue. Photo by Cameron Kelley; Layout by Stephen O'Malley. Mix and mastered by Russell Haswell.

LANDSTRUMM, NEIL: Kris P Lettuce LP (EGR45 006LP)
Get ready for some true wonkiness, courtesy of Neil Landstrumm. This is techno purely for those rock-solid psyches who lack that element of the deranged, the off-kilter, and the strange -- on the dancefloor and in their own mental constitution. If you're even slightly in doubt of your sanity, stay well clear of this cut. The fact that Neil's been using Elektron instruments probably means it's even more important to have that straightjacket at the ready. Even that won't stop you from dancing, though. Neil has been making wonky techno since antiquity, hell, he's the progenitor of the genre, but what you probably didn't know is that he's also been doing graphics for Rockstar Games, the software house that brought you Grand Theft Auto.

BOGNER, URSULA: Winkel Pong 7" (FAITICHE 015EP)
Faitiche present a new Ursula Bogner record. Winkel Pong contains three previously unreleased pieces from the archive of the sound researcher who died in 1994. In 2008, Jan Jelinek put together a first album from Bogner's tape archive, Recordings 1969-1988 (FAITICHE 001CD, 2014). A second followed in 2011, compiled this time by Andrew Pekler Sonne = Blackbox (FAITICHE 005CD, 2011). For Winkel Pong, the tape archive was passed on to Lucrecia Dalt. The Berlin-based Colombian sound artist and musician chose three tracks from the 1980s (exact dates unknown), editing the tape recordings for their release on Winkel Pong.

GESELLSCHAFT ZUR EMANZIPATION DES SAMPLES: Uguisubari 7" (FAITICHE 016EP)
Faitiche present the launch of its new Acoustic Surveillance Series. Each 7" vinyl single in the series presents a historical system for acoustic surveillance, beginning with Uguisubari by Jan Jelinek's field recordist pseudonym G.E.S.. The pieces feature recordings of uguisubari -- special floors in Japanese temples and castles. The nightingale floor was a popular acoustic warning system. It was very simple: when someone stepped on the floorboards, the nails holding them in place rubbed against metal clamps mounted on the underside of the boards, raising the alarm by creating a squeaking noise that resembled the chirping of the Japanese nightingale.

DONKEY NO NO: Tandoori Chicken (The Neverending Story) Vol. 1 LP (FTR 310LP)
"Second boss LP by this bossest of Western Mass trios. Comprised of Jenifer Gelineau on violin & electronics, Omeed Goodarzi on guitar, and Edward 'Ted' Lee on bowed cymbal, Donkey No No create the sort of instrumental hallucinations you'd expect to hear in the background of a film by Jodorowsky or Arrabal. It's very cool, because they use the very instruments you'd hear in some shitty Ken Burns documentary, in order to play music that would make Ken's sallow head explode if he tried to wrap his noggin around it. With sometimes scratchy violin as the ostensible lead instrument, theoretical comparisons to old timey music are inevitable. But Donkey No No's sound is old timey only in as much as its tendrils are as timeless as smoke. Every note they generate heads in such weirdly trippy directions you can immediately suss why these guys are such a favorite of Gary Panter (king of the hippies). Much of their flow is an unstoppable lateral gush, reminiscent of mid-points in long sets by classic-if-lost Bay Area bands like Patrick Kilroy's New Age trio or Serpent Power. They create an aura that is filled with breath and light in a way that few other bands have ever mustered. It's crazy to think that because they're a new band, on a label not known for its psych releases, that it's gonna take heavy duty psych heads YEARS to find the damn thing. Only when it is no longer in print, and Feeding Tube is an empty brush warehouse once again that the big boys will figure this one out. Which gives you a chance to get a jump on these turds. So do it. If you appreciate the sound of sliding through golden portals, this record was made for you. Whether you like curry or not." --Byron Coley, 2017. Edition of 300; Silk screen fold over covers by Neil Burke.

DOOMED BIRD OF PROVIDENCE, THE: Burrowed Into The Soft Sky LP (FANDF 046LP)
The Doomed Bird Of Providence's third album Burrowed Into The Soft Sky follows the acclaimed Will Ever Pray (2011) and Blind Mouths Eat (2013). On this occasion, they have discarded Mark Kluzek's vocals in favor of two twenty-minute instrumentals that continue Kluzek's obsessive and singular foray into early colonial history, while also being a significant departure in terms of approach. The underlying themes for each track are contrasting yet tie together via their historical context; a period where indigenous Australian belief systems and day-to-day lives were irrevocably assaulted. The song "Burrowed Into The Soft Sky" is based on a passage from Patrick White's novel Voss (1957). The book is very loosely based on the final journey through the northern regions of Australia by explorer Ludwig Leichardt. Kluzek took a passage from the book where a comet passes over and Voss, his team, and a tribe of Australian Aboriginals engage with and interpret the experience until it is "burrowed into the soft sky". "The Blood Dimmed Tide Is Loosed" takes a significantly darker turn, shining a light on a pattern of atrocity that took place in the north east of Australia at a time where a dynamic of back-and-forth, invariably initiated by colonists, took place, culminating in a "dispersal" of a tribe.

NACHTHEXEN: EP 10" (HARB 172EP)
Nachthexen are a band -- possibly a coven -- from Sheffield, making fresh, fiery, and eminently danceable synth punk. This record follows on and includes re-released songs from their cassette The Other (2015) and self-titled 7" (2016). With themes of social anxiety and isolation, feminist protest, and sanctuary in sisterhood, Nacthexen's sound involves outsider occultist eeriness with classic punk ferocity and '80s post-punk and new wave catchiness. Reminiscent, at times, of Goblin, Gary Numan, and Siekiera, it also recalls the punchy attitude and hooks of women pushing punk forward in the late '70s and '80s, think Kleenex or Suicide Squad.

FAGIOLINI, GIULIO: Dietro A Un Vetro CD (HOMEN 101CD)
Dietro A Un Vetro is the debut album from Giulio Fagiolini. Giulio's calm and short piano sketches may easily take you to Japan; they instantly feel innocent, clean, pure, and wistful. Perhaps the most instant reference point would be Joe Hisaishi. For those that don't know, Joe Hisaishi is the composer for almost all of the Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films. The music is so simple, so direct, and just so childlike; it imbues the films with a certain old-world (or at least, not of this modern world anyway) innocence. The line between sickly-sweet and this is very fine indeed, but Joe Hisaishi always matches the mood and gets just the right amount of innocence in such a beautifully restrained way. To say the music of Giulio Fagiolini might leave you with the same feeling as Hisaishi's music is all you need to know, hopefully. In an age of innate greediness and willingness to use an instrument or genre to soullessly pilfer, Dietro A Un Vetro is incredibly refreshing. It's simple, pure, direct, and innocent. The power of music to remind one that there is something so pure, despite all the grime, is a bit of a revelation really.

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble CD (HJR 042CD)
Repressed. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is comprised of eight brothers from the south side of Chicago who come from an extraordinary musical family. Other sisters and brothers are professional musicians, their mothers are singers, and Phil Cohran, their father, has roots running back to Mississippi, the musical hothouse of 1940s St. Louis, Sun Ra in Chicago in the 1950s, and the founding of the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). At night when they went to bed, the children would hear their father rehearsing with his band the Circle Of Sound. They were wakened at 6 a.m. for several hours of music practice before going to school and were a central part of their father's Youth Ensemble. Meanwhile, they were also sneaking under the covers and listening to NWA and Public Enemy, later forming their first group, GWC (Gangsters With A Curfew), which morphed into Wolf Pak (Wolf Pak (Wolves on the look out for pigs and Klansmen)). By the end of the '90s, they brought together their musicianship, their jazz roots and their hip-hop sensibility, and made a living busking on the streets of Chicago, which honed their burgeoning skills as composers. (They wrote all of the tracks on this album except "Alyo," written by their father, and "Rabbit Hop," written by Moondog.) Eventually, the group transferred to New York City, and after playing out relentlessly, including gigs with Mos Def and Erykah Badu, and some particularly incendiary shows in Europe, they have come to be known as one of the hottest and most individual bands around. This album is the result of a chance encounter in 2005: during a cold market day on Portobello Road, strains of Ellington and the swagger of brassy funk cut through the morning fog. Stationed on the corner of Talbot Road, eight horns and a drum kit rocked Ladbroke Grove. Since their initial meeting, Honest Jon's and HBE have stayed close. In 2007, HBE contributed a monster of a track "Sankofa" to the Tony Allen remix project, Lagos Shake (HJR 034CD/LP), and have not stopped blowing minds since. In London, Lyon and New York, HBE tore it up both as leaders and in support of artists as diverse as Victoria Williams and Candi Staton, both rousing and tender in turns. Honest Jon's are proud to present the gorgeous, thrilling music of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

PINK FLUID: Pipe Dreams LP (MAMBO 005LP)
Pink Fluid is not an Italian EDM duo by the same name, but the new band of Jon Tye and Pete Fowler who form the core of Seahawks. As Test Pressing once called it: "A partnership born of A Psychedelic Guide To Monsterism Island (2009) -- the soundtrack to Pete's illustrations, toys and figures -- cemented by gigs playing records by Boston, Steely Dan, and Fleetwood Mac at The Big Chill Bar, fueled by a passion for vintage music-making machines, and given a name after a weekend spent in sailors outfits at Bestival. From tracks synthesized around AOR samples, Seahawks now record pretty much as a full band -- which includes members of Hot Chip and The Horrors." So, what happened to Pink Fluid? Jon explains: "The first Pink Fluid release Pipe Dreams is coming up on Prins Thomas's Horizontal Mambo imprint, we don't know when but we know it will be beautiful when it does." And here it is! Pipe Dreams is an eight track, 32-minute mini-album of sheer, almost translucent, beauty. Horisontal Mambo is a sub-label of Full Pupp.

VATICAN SHADOW: Luxor Necropolitics 2x10" (HOS 489LP)
Dominick Fernow's Vatican Shadow returns with a new double-pack for his own Hospital Productions imprint following on from the recent Rubbish Of The Floodwaters 12" for Ostgut Ton (OSTGUT 104EP). Luxor Necropolitics was once again produced by Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, and it includes a super rare remix from Female of Sandwell District fame. Clocking in at almost 40 minutes, this is the most substantial Vatican Shadow release since 2016's Media In The Service Of Terror LP (HOS 472LP) and further develops Fernow's creative collaboration with Eustis, who provides a much more lean and dynamic sheen to those highly atmospheric foundations. The opening, title track provides evocative exposition; this is Vatican Shadow at its most cinematic and unreal; before "Intel War" jolts with increased propulsion and bass pressure and a killer soundsystem focus deployed with precision and depth. "Crown Prince Hamza" is much more squashed and feral, before a new "Red Headband" version of "More Of The Same" takes the original into even more anthemic terrain; this is surely the most memorable, enduring, and club-focused Vatican Shadow track of all. As if to further etch it on your mind, the vinyl edition offers a final exclusive track, a reworking of "More Of The Same" from Female, who takes the original and duffs it up, completely discarding that synth hook and instead intensifying the menace, heading down a Sandwell-shaped cave that will reminds you why you've loved pretty much every Female production. Cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy. Edition of 700.

SECOND STOREY: Lucid Locations 2LP (HTH 078LP)
Double LP version. Cut and mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy; Comes on one black vinyl and one yellow vinyl; Made at Optimal-Media, Germany. Alec Storey has been having a fantastic couple of years. In terms of his solo output, he's released an EP on the rhythmic powerhouse Nervous Horizon (2016), along with several releases as Al Tourettes, and he has also released several collaborative EPs with his trusted chap Appleblim on R&S Records. Now, Second Storey returns to his home label, Houndstooth, and is back with Lucid Locations. Lucid Locations is a collection of irrevocably personal productions that were written between his movements between Suffolk and London, all whilst the label's dad, Fabric, was closing down and Brexit had become a reality. Lucid Locations winds down paths that explore breakbeat, electro, IDM, and techno. For any listeners wanting to sink their teeth into something far-reaching and familiar at the same time, this is definitely worth checking out. "Barrel Roll" is a perfect entry point, not only because it captures the essence of Second Storey as a project in 2017 (as well as his growth from the excellent Al Tourettes releases), but it also emphasizes the perseverance and poise that Storey carries over from his personal life into the tracks that he creates. Keep on, carry on, and rave until the lights come on.

A SAGITTARIUN: Vanishing Point 12" (HYPE 063EP)
Bristol based A Sagittariun present their second release for Hypercolour. In "Vanishing Point", big pumping beats and spiraling FX fall aside to a lone breakbeat that ushers in a special breakdown section. Child-like keys and deep synth stabs draw comparisons to retro '80s vibes (think Stranger Things). "The Pathway" keeps things on an all-together straighter tip; an incessant tribal loop weaves and filters around a thunderous kick and shuffling hats, ebbing-and-flowing in A Sagittariun's most club-centric production yet. Matrixxman delivers a superb remix, pushing the original down a long dark tunnel for a growling and reverberating techno overhaul.

LONDON MODULAR ALLIANCE: Wolves EP 12" (HYPE 064EP)
London Modular Alliance returns to Hypercolour with the five-track Wolves EP. "Brockie Det" fires out the blocks with on point electro beats and melancholic pads, whilst "Militant" continues the theme with dusted drums and thick washes of bass for a real futuristic funk moment. The disassembled arrangement of "Advance & Proceed" gives off a cold and discordant atmosphere, but remains in groove and sonically tight, there's a distinct jazz flare in the mix also. "Tremors" hits hard and heavy, giving the Detroit electro cats a run for their money, whilst "Wolves" is a busy and inspired slab of British IDM.

TAVI FEAT. ROBERT OWENS, JANNE: The Other Man 12" (IRC 136EP)
The Other Man is a collaboration between young Finnish producer Janne Tavi and Chicago house vocal legend Robert Owens. The EP provides lush layers of sound, relentless energy, and intricate piano riffs and stabs. Owens's poignant vocals seal the deal on this new house classic, taking it to sublime heights. The vocal dub kicks the heat up a notch with Owens's seductive vocals and Tavi's stunning keys and arrangement. New York house legend Kerri Chandler offers a spirited vocal version with a dynamic bassline, and follows with an instrumental take, pared down to a tool and keeping the infectious groove.

AGGROVATORS, THE: Aggrovating The Rhythm At Channel One CD (JRCD 067CD)
The Aggrovators were one of Jamaica's finest session bands put together by the hit-maker from Jamaica, Bunny Striker Lee. The group would produce some of the hardest rhythms cut at the legendary Channel 1 studio. These tracks would provide the backbone to songs that were usually voiced over at King Tubby's own studio. These cuts here represent a selection of some of those fine rhythms selected together for the first time. The Aggrovators were a group of reggae musicians that usually featured Carlton "Santa" Davis on drums playing alongside Robbie Shakespeare on bass with other musicians added like Earl "Chinna" Smith on guitar and Tommy McCook, Vin Gordon, and Lennox Brown added for horn arrangements, with keyboard and organ duties normally left to Ansel Collins and Bernard "Touter" Harvey. Jamaican Recordings have compiled some great tracks recorded by this fantastic group of musicians and focused on those cut on Channel 1 studios to give you a feel of what those times were like. Dubs of songs from Johnny Clarke, Delroy Wilson, Paragons, Ossie Scott, Roy Shirley, and Pat Kelly. CD version includes four bonus tracks.

HAUSCHKA: Substantial LP (KK 035LP)
2017 repress of Hauschka's debut album Substantial, originally released in 2004. Piano music is highly personal music, which is the reason why piano solo albums occupy a particular place of importance in a musician's work -- not that Volker Bertelmann wants to hype his first foray to that extent, hence the pseudonym. Nevertheless Hauschka is personal music, simply because it has accompanied him for so long, because it has always been there in some shape or form, because it has always been important. The title points to the fact that it is dealing with something of importance, not just a few finger exercises or background ivory-tinkling. Substantial is a snapshot of a life spent with the black-and-white keys, and is simultaneously both moment and history, thought and feeling, yet without turning into a unduly meaningful concept album. Rather, Substantial is based upon the least conceptual of all concepts: Improvisation. Each track is based upon an opening sequence, the theme of which is extended, modulated, and varied with, as far as form or length is concerned, no specific objective in mind. What has come out is music of a differing, well, substance: Eleven atmospheric pieces in which a variety of different techniques overlap and rhythmical images with narrative depth unfold; in which further instruments, such as double bass or vibraphone make a fleeting appearance, at once lending a hint of pop, but at no time detracting from the piano as central instrument; in which experimental and electronic music is accessed without compromising the directness and ease of the improvisational approach. The confluence of Bertelmann's multiple musical personality can be apprehended here: Whilst the pop-oriented musician plays the melody, the electronic producer gently experiments with sounds, leaving the pianist quite literally to manipulate the piano -- plucking the strings with a plectrum, dampening them or bowing them lengthways to achieve a variety of percussive effects. Following the recording, the tracks were adapted, supplemented, and finalized. Using multi-tracking, up to four piano tracks were superimposed, electronic sounds from the laptop added, as well Stefan Schneider's bass (Mapstation, To Rococo Rot, Music A.M.) on three tracks. Substantial is a recollection of the foundation of a musician's life, drawing upon the roots of diverse projects and releases over the past fifteen years. Hauschka is yet another facet of Bertelmann's palette, not a change of direction. Includes download code.

2012 release. Welcome to the rocksteady sound from Jamaica. Toward the end of 1965, some say due to the extreme heatwave that was hitting the Island, the people that followed the Sound System dances demanded a slower beat so they could still move and groove to the all-night musical affairs. BROWN, STEPHEN: LF RMX 002 12" (LFRMX 002EP)
LF RMX is a new series featuring edits and remixes originally made by Len Faki. The second edition presents two complementary contrasting versions of "Deep In" by Stephen Brown. Sticking to the strengths of the source material, Faki's sleek polish makes the centerpiece acid bassline and playful cut-up vocal stand out from the mix even more. Already quite a force to begin with, the momentum only keeps growing as old school drum-breaks and additional percussion roll in. The original's linear progression is traded for murky, modulating analog squelches on the "Deepspace Mix", turning the tune into a dubby late-night groover.

FP-ONER (AKA FRED P): 7 CD (MUSIQ 059CD)
Children are laughing and playing in the back, a baby screams happily: handsome field recordings welcome the listener to the final chapter of Fred P's Fp-Oner trilogy for Mule Musiq. The New York City native's 7 features tunes for deep meditative club use and beyond. 7 brings the listener house music full of cosmic realities, odd jazzing moments, Japanese spoken word pop, synth spheres for ambient use, and an overall outer-national atmosphere that handsomely dances between roughness and subtle, tuned-in deepness. Fred P explains: "I chose to base this project on numbers in order to impart a bit of depth and substance. '5', '6' and '7' have a meaning in both the literal and esoteric sense. We as a species are a combination of matter and energy, so it is a matter of relating the two in harmony. . . . It's like a testimony to the human condition and how we relate to treat and mistreat one another. . . . So rather than doing a project that highlights ego posture, my intent is more about what can I give to the listener." At large, the trilogy is a journey inward -- compelling, mesmerizing, and enchanting. Fred P produced the final chapter mostly in his studio in Berlin on various synths and with a bunch of mysterious samples, all later organized and programmed in Ableton. Fred P explains further: "This project has a beginning, middle, and end. The record 5 (MUSIQ 048CD/187LP, 2015) was intended to introduce a meditative energy within a rhythmic construct, as the number '5' represents the dynamic and unpredictable. . . . The album 6 (MUSIQ 055CD/200LP, 2016) is of an earthly and more harmonious discord. I attempt to bring the inner conflict in the form of natural unnaturalness. The raw energy of the search in this project I think is self-explanatory, which is the point I believe to show how flawed one can be but express very specific themes honestly. Finally, with 7 my goal is to merge the two into balance, as one focused state of mind, as '7' is the thinker beyond understanding or beyond the illusion." Listen deeply, open your doors of perception, dance the atomic mess around, stay small, be true, and don't forget, Fp-Oner's music is a traveling zone with a universal meaning. It can mean many things to different people. "Light Years" features Minako.

VA: Invenciones: La Otra Vanguardia Musical En Latinoamerica 1976-1988 2LP (MR 369LP)
Double LP version. The artists on Invenciones: La Otra Vanguardia Musical En Latinoamerica 1976-1988 come from an intermediate period between the high-point of diverse artistic currents influenced by the hippie movement and the advent of punk -- a watershed between the expansion of the industry and the emergence of a new DIY distribution system. They also belong to an intermediate period in terms of the development of electroacoustic music labs and the arrival of synthesizers and samples available for mass audiences. They hail from that decisive stage of technological socialization, when small studios and home recording studios were set up. Above all, what these artists have in common is that they are Latin Americans and as such, share the difficulties of belonging to a time in history when ideological polarization resulting from the Cold War was rife, when they would witness complex social processes, military coups, dictatorships, and radicalization, and when the legitimacy of music that spoke about the territory was also disputed. It was a time when native sounds were introduced, either linked to the use of poor or austere technologies or to the local context. Many of the artists on this record have acquired cult status and are key figures in regards to understanding the cultural periods they belong to in their respective countries, but as such they have also been atypical figures and reflect a sensibility that was spreading across Latin America back then: a spirit of experimentation that was redefining musical directions in the region. More than a movement, it was a group of individuals who worked on counterculture projects. Notwithstanding this mosaic of different sounds, several trends can be identified: free use of folk, open compositions, explorations of the boundaries of rock and experimentation with technology. However, imagination is perhaps what connects the artists brought together here for the first time the most. Because all of them needed to imagine a new space, where they could forge a new scene that punk and technology would go on to consolidate. All these artists did things for the first time. They represent the breaking point between clearly defined periods, despite the difficulties and isolation that many suffered when creating their compositions. Features: Manongo Mujica, Banda Dispersa De La Madre Selva, Miguel Flores, Amauta, Autoperro, Malalche, Decibel, Jorge Reyes, Grupo Um, Carlos Da Silveira, Musikautomatika, Quum, Vía Láctea, and Miguel Noya. Includes booklet with liner notes by Luis Alvarado and artist photos.

XABA, SIBUSILE: Unlearning / Open Letter To Adoniah 2CD (M3HART 001-2CD)
The independent, South African record label Mushroom Hour Half Hour present Open Letter To Adoniah, a moving album by talented guitarist and songwriter Sibusile Xaba, who improvises the musical legacy of KwaZulu-Natal into an exciting, genreless future. A lynchpin in South Africa's new generation of jazz musicians, KwaZulu-Natal born guitarist and vocalist Sibusile Xaba has all the makings of an acoustic guitar master. With a vocal style that is part dreamscaping and part ancestral invocation, Xaba divines as opposed to plainly singing. Combined with a guitar style that is rooted in expressive picking, Xaba's music shatters the confines of genre, taking only the fundamentals from mentors such as Madala Kunene and Dr. Philip Tabane and imbuing these with a mythology and improvisational intensity all of his own. Open Letter to Adoniah is an album reverent of life and its connectedness to a higher source. The music emanates from dreams revealed to guitarist Sibusile Xaba over consecutive days. With percussionists Thabang Tabane and Moahanganai Magagula, the trio coalesces both geographic and spiritual influences, hinting at Maskandi (a music style dominant in Xaba's native KwaZulu-Natal) and the improvisational culture of South Africa's jazz avant-garde. Collectively, the musicians remold these influences, situating them within rhythms that span the continent. Thabang Tabane's influence over the project gives it a spiritual sensibility allusive to Malombo which his father Dr. Philip Tabane originated in the late 1960s. Mushroom Hour Half Hour is a Johannesburg based, independent record label and a mobile recording studio that unearths and records unique music from the African continent. Xaba's debut project is Mushroom Hour's first international release. Produced by Thabang Tabane. Double CD version includes the album Unlearning as disc one.

KHALIL: The Water We Drink LP (PI 195LP)
The Water We Drink is the debut album from Khalil, a close confidante of Posh Isolation, and, naturally, a project close to the label's heart. With an iridescent shower of auto-tuned vocals and encrypted synthetic forms, Khalil presents a luminous route into a future of cadences pitched to a crushing intensity. As the new project of Nikolaj Vonsild, best known for his pop endeavors in the synth quartet When Saints Go Machine, as well as his acoustic duo Cancer, Khalil is his strongest vision to date. The collaborative platform for Vonsild's searing angelic and alien vocals is produced with Simon Formann, better known as Yen Towers and formerly of Lower, along with Villas Klint. With water, people feel differently. Indifferently of course, it approaches a sense of touch quite unlike any other matter or form. It slips and caresses, appealing to a sensuality so intuitive it barely registers beyond its immediacy. It's an urgency that always arrives. The ocean tells this through the shore; a perennial pleasure, a forgivable obsession. That the coast, its container, the edge of where people safely stand and where water waits, is a form just as much as it is a dissolving place, then considering a design such as that of an Evian natural spring water bottle amounts to staring at the stars. Thematically, Khalil draws constellations and cites emotive signals with this kind of deep union between form and touch. Finding perhaps a place undiscovered. Across The Water We Drink, the impulses of the romantic lyricism are diverted through artificial mechanisms and unnatural vocal terrains. Set against a melodic chorus of fractured pop, there is a certain sense in which the aching wane of Khalil feels like an ensemble of identities grasping for a form, as water may grasp for land. If there's reason to feel that bottled water is a portable piece of something greater than everything, then Khalil distributes high definition pop tropes with that same logic. The radio is an ocean, and Khalil's longing a hydrating force.

PARAGONS, THE: Return CD (RR 316CD)
Radiation Roots present a reissue of The Paragons' Return, originally released in 1977. One of the most important harmony groups in the entirety of Jamaican music, the Paragons have a long and complicated history. First formed in the ska years by Bob Andy and Tyrone Evans as the duo of Andy And Ronnie, the group soon expanded to a quartet through the addition of Howard Barrett and John Holt, the latter naturally assuming lead duties; following the subsequent departure of Andy, Holt, Evans, and Barrett made the Paragons the quintessential rock steady trio. They had an incredible run of hits for Duke Reid and Coxsone during the mid-to-late '60s, and also issued some self-produced work, before Holt's solo career skyrocketed, leaving the group on the back-burner. Then, in the mid-1970s, the Paragons reformed, cutting material for New York-based labels such as Clocktower and Clintones, which led to this intriguing album, which saw material recorded in Jamaica at Harry J for Bunny Lee mixed with work cut at Bullwackie's studio in the Bronx; along with re-workings of classics such as "Left With A Broken Heart" and "Memories By The Score" is a whole range of new material, dealing with contemporary themes.

VA: Songs From Satan's Jukebox Volume 1: Country, Rockabilly, Hillbilly & Gospel For Satan's Sake 10" (STAGO 102LP)
Who the hell is the devil? As we all know, God (that old slowcoach) is commonly known and allowed to have but one name (or none). As his everlasting archenemy, however, of my names there are plenty: Allow me to introduce myself: Satan from Arabia! Devil, El Diablo, fiend, deuce, Old Nick, the one that bedevils everything -- these are only a few of my names in Western cultures! Lucifer -- the one who brings the light -- or, as seen through the eyes of my grumbling competition, the one who was exiled from the light! Beelzebub, Azrael... Satan on the release: "I am the outlaw, the one nobody likes to talk about but the one that everybody likes to hail, the one that is always to the fore when you need me: You can find me wherever guilty pleasure celebrates its goatish feasts. You can find me at the tables of a gambling den, at the counters of hellish bars, promoting artistic careers at crossroads when the clock strikes midnight. I'm riding the highway to hell in a chromium-black limousine and steam along diabolic train tracks in black locos. I travel as the eerie wanderer or the eldritch hitchhiker. You can meet me in many shapes on the world's and life's big stages as the salient seducer in classy, noble twine and pointed leather shoes. I am especially dangerous in shape of a bombshell woman! Thus, it's no wonder that artists have been erecting memorials in my honor since the beginning of time. I have been idolized in arts, literature, and especially in music. I hereby present you a small selection of satanic songs and maleficent melodies from my infernal jukebox. Let me seduce you!" First of two 10"s called Sicksville. Watch out for two volumes of its sister compilation Coolsville. Compiled by Stay Sick, a gruesome twosome of deejays from the nightclubs of Brighton, UK. Established in 2008, they continue to spin the best dancing music from surf to soul, oddball R&B to filthy rock n' roll, garage to punk, 7"s at a time. Their vinyl addiction has meant they have amassed a large collection of sleazy and greasy rock n' roll from the fifties and sixties, including Tarantino surf, proto-soul stompers, swingin' rhythm and blues, and twistin' tittyshakers. Get ready for the DJ to drop some slop. Greasy battered platters of wax, with honkin' saxes and Hammond organs blasting outta the speakers like there's no tomorrow. Hit the go-go cage for some tittyshakers to whip, whop, wobble, and grind to. If you like Sicksville, then come and visit its twin town, Coolsville. This sister series is a bit more laid back and strictly for bongo beating beatniks. So cool it's frozen. It's solid gone. Sleazy finger-clickers, smoldering sax-laden instrumentals and oddball rock n' roll play out of every groove. Dig the crazy vibrations, the swingin' beat. So flip ya wig, snap the whip and make the trip... to Coolsville Features: Phil Campos, Sandy Nelson, The Nite Hawks, The Sentinals, The Idols, The Nightmare, Jimmy Shaw, Robert Parker, Douglas "Jocko" Henderson, Bill Smith Combo, Jessie Hill, and The Metropolitans.

A stroll through its subjacent U-Bahn station exemplifies Berlin's multitude and diversity like no other place in the city. As always, music is the common denominator and Oliver Koletzki delivers the perfect soundtrack with this new release, while Chrisse Kunst renders the visual. Features tracks by: Oliver Koletzki, Epitacius vs Mestre Barrao, Sam Shure, Basem Darwisch, Kellerkind, Ben Weber & Axel Eilers, Teenage Mutants & Heerhorst, Fideles, Julian Wassermann, Township Rebellion, Reinier Zonneveld, and Deorbiting.

COEO: Flesh World 12" (TOYT 067EP)
COEO's pure hedonistic disco-ish attitude combines the funk-driven eclecticism of today and the curiosity of young music cats who always want to be ahead and a sense of quality in music that is absent in so many of today's house music productions. COEO are regularly on the top of the several deep house charts, and there is a reason: their tracks have a new, nasty, sexualized vibe that's inspired by the late 1990s French touch house or early Masters At Work productions. Flesh World is black music basically. It's booty sound. Disco for sure. Percussion jam remix by Kapote.

JELLIES, THE: Jive Baby On A Saturday Night 12" (TTT 006EP)
2017 repress of the long-lost post punk single from 1981. Incredibly hooky, it was originally played by John Peel back in the day, but sold just 30 copies. Rediscovered by Thurston Moore and now back out with the full original version plus edits and mixes by Lemon Jelly's Fred Deakin, Tommy Stupid and Georges Vert aka the Advisory Circle. The Jellies got together in 1981 and made a 7" single. There is one photo of the band and they never recorded again.

PEGA MONSTRO: Casa De Cima CD (UTR 094CD)
Pega Monstro is the Lisbon, Portugal sister duo of Julia Reis (drums) and Maria Reis (guitar). They share the same birthday but are not twins, and they have always lived in Lisbon, Portugal. Maria and Julia resolved became a duo in 2010, focusing on their intuitive sense of harmony and expressionistic dream-punk sound. They return to Upset The Rhythm, following Alfarroba (UTR 072CD/LP, 2015), with their third album entitled Casa De Cima, which translates as "Upper House". On the first song "Ó Miguel", Pega Monstro shown that they have grown in confidence and vision, they sound compelling and assured and let the song unfold in its own leisure. The stunning "Partir A Loiça" follows with its stammering rhythms and soaring, swirling vocals. The song's title, literally "break all the dishes", is a saying in Portugal meaning to shake things up and exceed expectations. Pega Monstro constantly reach for something beyond plain comprehension, stretching songs to their limits before collapsing them back into new, more interesting forms. The Portuguese poet and writer Fernando Pessoa had a similar mutable approach to his work. Pega Monstro recite one of Pessoa's poems called "O Moinho De Café" during the third act of their epic, yet romantic track "Cachupa". The track is a good example of how natural and spontaneous Pega Monstro can sound. The second half of the album starts over with the enthusiastic track "Pouca Terra", all racing chords and clouds of cymbal, building to a beautiful textural density and ecstatic finale. Pega Monstro nurture their songs, letting them follow tangents, take risks, or even fall over. There's a sense of sisterly oneness and provision apparent in their music allowing Pega Monstro to sound instinctual, yet awash with ideas. "Fado Da Estrela Do Ouro" and "Sensação" are decidedly delicate in manner, drawing on themes of equal restlessness and wistfulness. "Sensação" even concludes with the sisters singing the traditional Portuguese folk air "At the door of the holy souls, God knocks every hour". Finally, "Odemira" draws Casa De Cima to a close in triumphant style. Drums and guitar chase each other feverishly, galloping ever faster before breaking into calmer clearings of hushed vocal reverie and serene falsetto. Casa De Cima was recorded through September 2016 by Leonardo Bindilatti. CD version comes as a digipak and includes a booklet.

PIKACYU-MAKOTO: Galaxilympics CD (UTR 095CD)
Pikacyu-Makoto is an intergalactic love and peace duo, featuring two figureheads of underground Japanese music: Pika from Afrirampo and Makoto Kawabata of legendary psychedelic avatars Acid Mothers Temple. As a duo they embrace both sides of the coin -- drums and guitar, chaos and order, male and female, yin and yang, the angel and the devil. Pika brings her skills of mystifying performance to the table, all free-drum bluster and vocals veering between shrine maiden and wild spirit. Kawabata's guitar-work moves from a roar to a whisper, a yell to a sob, he's working on the same canvas of extremes. The aim of their unity is to write truly celestial hymns for the outer world and odes of love for the inner cosmic context. In 2011, they released their first album Om Sweet Home: We Are Shining Stars From Darkside (REPOSE 027CD, 2011). In 2016, they spent two weeks touring through Europe whilst writing their new album Galaxilympics, suffused with the outreaching sound and message of their impulsive live performances. Galaxilympics is an album of contrasts. "Space Sumo" kicks off the record in explosive style. Pikacyu's drums jitter, crash and stumble, but steadfastly refuse to groove. Makoto attacks his guitar, cloaking himself in reverb to produce a wall-of-sound, alternating between melody and noise. "Funifunikonefuni" follows with its frenzied take on pop music, bubbling with energy and Pika's multiple vocal layers. "I'll Forgive" is chant-like in its devotion to following the tumbling melody line of the song even to absurd and unpredictable dimensions. "Pika Mako Hall" is a more serene affair, with whispered echoes and guitar drones swirling amongst bursts of rapid sequencer ambience. "Castle Of Sand" picks up on this more spacious approach with slowly developing programmed electronics, before the title track erupts with gurgling synths, soaring guitar trails, and Pika's most searching vocal yet. The album concludes in reflective manner with the suitably titled "Sayonownara", a song as much in the present as it is in the act of saying farewell. It's positively elegiac with washes of cymbal and deep acres of guitar drone for the first five minutes before Pika's drums take things up a gear and into more psychedelic out-rock terrain. Galaxilympics is a triumph of opposites united. It's also a portal into the world of two musicians who find peace and semblance through their interaction.

MUTANTES: Ao Vivo LP (MRSSS 544LP)
Vinilisssimo present a reissue of Mutantes' Ao Vivo, originally released in 1976. Those who fell in love with Os Mutantes after listening to their Tropicália work in the late '60s, embracing both psychedelia and Brazilian music influences, should be aware that only one of the original band members, Sérgio Dias, is responsible for this late album, and when it came out the band's sound had changed enormously after almost ten years since their debut LP was released in 1968. The good news is that Ao Vivo is actually a great progressive rock record and also the first time we can see the name of Os Mutantes printed on the sleeve of a live album. The quality trademark of the band was still there despite the personnel changes over the years and the fade out of the Tropicália movement, which in many cases evolved towards the progressive genre. Ao Vivo was recorded in 1976 during a show at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Rita Lee and Arnaldo Baptista were not there, but the very talented Paulo de Castro, Rui Motta, and Luciano Alves had joined Dias and delivered a brilliant shot of live rock music with lots of quality keyboard solos and guitar licks. Paulo was at the time a very skillful multi-instrumentalist, so it is not surprising that he was hired as arranger and studio musician for artists such as Gerson Conrad and Zezé Motta on their 1975 LP on Som Livre. This album features 13 new songs and appears to be the last recording of Os Mutantes until the 2006 reunion show in London. An essential addition to any '70s Brazilian music collection. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

SILVERHEAD: Silverhead LP (MRSSS 547LP)
Vinilisssimo present a first time vinyl reissue of Silverhead's self-titled debut album, originally released in 1972. You can tell a band has reached cult status when they are asked for reunion shows several decades after being dismantled. And this is exactly what happened to Silverhead, despite not gaining much commercial success during their short two-year career. They were part of the UK glam scene in the early '70s, as clearly stated through the picture on the LPs front sleeve (platform-soled boots, massive flares, and make-up), and released just two albums. The self-titled Silverhead saw the light in 1972 and is the band's first studio effort, sporting a sound that lays somewhere in between late The Who and the original heavy rock. "Ace Supreme", one of the strongest tracks on the LP, perfectly shows their devotion for furious guitars, stories of bikers and energetic vocals, while the opening track, "Long Legged Lisa", reveals some solid foundations in blues music, obviously mixed with the expected glam sounds. There is also room for very inspired melodic songs like "Johnny" or the very Rolling Stones-esque "In Your Eyes", one of the highlights of this brilliant album. Although Silverhead was a confessed source of inspiration for many UK bands in the 80s, they only managed to release two full studio albums before the group disbanded in 1974 and its members took different paths in the following years... Michael Des Barres was the front-man but most people will remember him for his work on several films and TV series, mainly as an actor for playing Murdoc on the television show MacGyver. The other group members would later join bands such as Blondie or play for artists like Robert Plant. Presented in facsimile gatefold sleeve and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

SPOERRI, BRUNO: Voice Of Taurus LP (WRWTFWW 014LP)
We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present a reissue of the highly sought-after electronic/sci-fi disco/proto-techno/ambient masterpiece Voice Of Taurus by Swiss music pioneer and synth super wizard Bruno Spoerri, available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978. Surrounded with a formidable family of legendary synthesizers, primitive modulators, and audio gear -- transformed and customized à la Spoerri --, armed with an extraordinary talent for improvisation, and deeply inspired by the likes of Wendy Carlos, Pierre Schaeffer, and the then freshly released Close Encounter of the Third Kind (1977), Bruno Spoerri envisioned Voice Of Taurus as "electronic pop conceived using an experimental and jazz approach". The result is an out-of-this-world sonic adventure where early techno sounds blend with synth-based sci-fi soundtrack vibes, krautrock explorations, and retro-futuristic disco madness. It's unique, catchy, cosmic, and meditative -- it's a must have for all record collectors of the galaxy... welcome to Planet Spoerri. Still very active recording, touring, and collaborating (with Julian Sartorius, Franz Treichler of Young Gods, Marco Repetto of Grauzone, Roger Girod, to name a few), Bruno Spoerri is a multiple award-winning Swiss music icon, whose career started in the 1950s. His works spans jazz, electronic music, film, and TV work, and everything in between. Improvisational maestro and synthesizer mega-connoisseur, Mr. Spoerri has influenced an entire generation of producers and musicians -- even Jay-Z sampled him. Housed in a 350 gram jacket; Includes new liner notes.

SPOERRI & RETO WEBER, BRUNO: The Sound Of The UFOs LP (WRWTFWW 015LP)
We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present a reissue of the extraterrestrial cult classic The Sound Of The UFOs, a collaborative effort between Swiss jazz and electronic music icon Bruno Spoerri and innovative drummer extraordinaire Reto Weber, available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978. Recorded live in Zurich in March 1978, The Sound Of The UFOs finds Bruno and Reto improvising with a vast array of classic and customized synths and percussions from all corners of the globe (and the galaxy). It's cosmic free jazz in audio gear heaven with a heavy dose of ambient, krautrock, primitive proto-techno vibes, and experimental space disco with a musique concrète mentality -- anything's possible when a jazzman and a percussionist obsessed with finding new sounds collide and explore uncharted sonic territories. This groundbreaking gem is the ideal companion piece to Bruno Spoerri's highly coveted Voice Of Taurus LP (WRWTFWW 015LP). DIZZY BRAINS, THE: Out Of The Cage CD (XRP 1602CD)
Two brothers songwriters-composers: Mahefa (bass) and Eddy (vocals). Two youngsters in their prime, brought up listening to their music lover of a father's collection of vinyl records (The Kinks, The Kingsmen, The Vines, Singapore Sling). The only issue is that rock'n'roll, although considered standard, is nowhere near as loved in Madagascar as heavy metal and folkloric rock. Even worse, the style is banned. Hence, the feeling of survival for the genre. Eddy had the brilliant idea for the band back in 2011 (while on the toilet -- as you do!) while listening to the seven AM program of Jacqueline Taïeb. Boom! As simple as that. They found their style mixing daily narration with minimalistic orchestration. And their name, The Dizzy Brains, was inspired by Jacques Dutronc and Serge Gainsbourg (whom they adore) mixing irony and carelessness in attitude. In fact, they borrowed "Les Cactus" by Dutronc and made it their own, filling it with loads of thorns. Their biggest influence, however, remains The Sonics, whose "Louie Louie" and "Have Love with Travel" was translated in Malagasy and is featured on their first EP, Môla Kely (2013) describing easy girls from an album called Little Bitch -- you read it right -- provocation, one would easily describe it. Their main preoccupations remain money, the future, friends (girlfriends), and a political system that is fast becoming the enemy. But being a "punk" band has never been tempting to them. The constant feeling of rejection made them switch and that feeling is forging their character as a band, shaping attitude and beliefs. Choosing between being the sheep or the wolf; they have made their mark.

GENERAL LEVY: We Progressive LP (XRP 816213LP)
LP version. After more than 20 years of stage experience, General Levy is back with We Progressive, his newest album, which he himself has called "the best album of my career." General Levy, veteran of the UK music scene, grew up with reggae and black music influences. Promptly, he decided to take a stab at writing and then went on to singing. He managed to develop his own musical universe, inspired by the fast style culture. At the age of 19, he had already gained international recognition and been awarded several prizes such as the best reggae album, the best single for "Heat" and the best UK MC. General Levy composed his new album We Progressive in a specific way. For the first time, he surrounded himself with numerous musicians in order to create an eclectic and accomplished work. He decided to collaborate with Papa Style & Baldas, a French instrumentalist duo. To these two riddim makers was added the DJ and producer Goloom, who was put in charge of the artistic production. At last, he decided to work with Mayra, a young Brazilian singer from the duo Mayra & Mr.Mow, who brings her soft touch to the chorus. Through this new work of art, this unusual artist provides his fans with his vocal fluency and compositions as various as conceptual. We Progressive travels between reggae and different influences: funk and hip-hop in "Blow" and "The Love We Got", a subtle mix of rock and raga in "Flipping And Flapping", and Latin influences with the song "Bomba Rumba". But General Levy doesn't forget his roots and delights his fans with the wonderful acoustic song "Friend In Need". Also features Danakil and Big Red.

FOUNDARS 15: Fire Woman LP (CRZR 1006LP)
"The 1970s in Nigeria were an age when mighty bands walked the earth. In Lagos, Afro-rock stalwarts such as BLO and Monomono ruled the roost; eastwards, it was deeply funky groups like The Funkees, The Apostles and The Friimen. Up north you had soulful ensembles such as The Elcados and The Moonrakers. And in the southeast, you had Foundars 15. Foundars 15 were not the only rock band operating in the southern city of Port Harcourt, but they were without question the tightest and most eclectic not just in Port Harcourt but perhaps in Nigeria as a whole. Formed initially as an army band in the wake of the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970, Foundars 15 released a string of singles in the early seventies, followed by four albums of heavy, jittery funk-rock between 1976 and 1978 before splitting up to pursue solo careers. 1977's Fire Woman is perhaps the finest (and rarest) of Foundars 15's albums, offering a spicy buffet of groovy pop, reggae, native rock and dense, off-kilter funk. Long sought after by aficionados, Fire Woman has been an LP that is more often heard about than actually heard. That is about to change. Comb & Razor Sound is proud to present a new, fully-authorized reissue of Fire Woman, featuring eight crucial cuts representing the gold standard of the golden age of Nigerian pop music. Here's your chance to catch the fire!"

MOORE, RUDY RAY: The Cockpit CD (DOL 106CD)
" 'Although the cover lists it as his third, this was actually Rudy Ray Moore's seventh full length comedy album release. After the massive success of Eat Out More Often and This Pussy Belongs To Me in 1970, Moore had developed a formula taking long traditional spoken monologues, or 'toasts', and freshening them up for the 'now generation' as he would call it. The release of The Cockpit in early 1971 continued this formula and also introduced the world to 'Petey Wheatstraw: The Devil's Son-In-Law', a character which Moore would later base a feature length film around in 1977. The Cockpit remains one of Moore's most popular albums. It also needs to be noted that this was the first time Rudy used completely topless women in his artwork and this may in fact be the first major record release that includes a man on the cover with semi-naked women! MOORE, RUDY RAY: I Can't Believe I Ate The Whole Thing CD (DOL 107CD)
"Rudy Ray continued to cut his comedy party records, rappin' out his street rhymes with a little music behind. The room was packed with guys and gals, friends and partiers from the neighborhood. Dudes, pimps, gangsters, players, winos, and just plain Bad Ass Kids! And this album is breakout time! I Can't Believe I Ate The Whole Thing blew the doors open, set the trend, the one that a decade later in 1986 launched 2 Live Crew when they sampled Rudy Ray Moore on hit singles 'Throw That D' and 'Get it Girl' from their debut album The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are. Through word of mouth and pure outrageousness the 2 Live Crew album sold over half a million copies. And it didn't stop there!! Rudy Ray was now deep in the Hip Hop mix. 2 Live Crew's 'Movin' Something' audaciously sampled 'Romeo and Juliet,' Rudy Ray's nasty duet with Lady Reed, aka Queen Bee from the Dolemite movies and one of Rudy's early label signings back in the day. Ice Cube with Funk Master George Clinton throws out in 'Bop Gun' a Rudy Ray Moore line from on this very album, 'No One Knows Where the Nose Goes.' Big Daddy Kane loves the track 'Dangerous Dan.' I Can't Believe I Ate The Whole Thing is the album that sets the tone for the Hardcore Hip Hop scene. Here you can hear where Dr. Dre, N.W.A. Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, and Ice T got their stuff. Also where comedian Robin Harris took Rudy's joke 'Piccolo Player' and made it one of his own laugh line bits. All of it jumped off this album and swayed a generation. Straight off the street from shooting dice, playin' the horses in a bookie joint, and cruising in a lowrider car to smoking weed and late night listening when the kids are all asleep. Yeah, right! As Rudy Ray Moore said, 'Rappin' and cappin' is my game. And all those young men are rappin' good! BUT, when it comes down to rappin', I was through with it before they even learned what to do with it!!' --Liner Notes by Donald Randell"

J.B.'S, THE: Doing It to Death LP (GET 54076LP)
2017 repress. "For starters, this platter begins with one of the great intros of all time: 'Ladies and gentlemen, there are seven acknowledged wonders of the world. You are about to witness the eighth...' Lodged in a deep groove between the JB's' debut LP Food For Thought (1972) and the more complex and at-times political Damn Right, I Am Somebody (from 1974) sits the ridiculously vampy and infectious classic, Doing It To Death. First moving hips and making heads nod in 1973, the James Brown-produced, 5-song album is one big funk lick, broken up into many delicious moving parts. As with pretty much everything produced by the JB's -- led by Fred Wesley with heavy help from a supporting cast that included saxophonist Maceo Parker, guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Hearlon 'Cheese' Martin and drummer John 'Jabo' Starks -- all songs began and revolved around a devastating riff. The title track is most certainly guilty-as-charged, as it starts strutting right out of the gate and continues for just over 10 minutes, driven by a guitar lick and MCed by the inimitable James Brown, with soloists stepping up and out while the song chugs on. The other centerpiece of the album is the 8-minute 'You Can Have Watergate Just Gimme Some Bucks And I'll Be Straight,' whose groove is interestingly teased two times before it arrives in full form. The song title itself is provocative, and the music keeps a stone-cold groove despite the less than cheery undertones. Again driven by an infectious guitar morsel, the breakdowns in this song gave sampling producers and DJs sweet dreams in the '80s, and Fred Wesley's trombone solo rides beautifully over the group's cries of 'We need some money.' Beyond the aforementioned sure-shots, the twitchy 'More Peas,' 'La Di Da La Di Day' and the much jazzier, solo-heavy 'Sucker' round out this incredible album. It's just another perfect example of how James Brown's funk machine could stop the world when they hit a groove."

SIDE EYES, THE: So Sick LP (ITR 312LP)
LP version. "So Sick, the debut album on In The Red Records by Southern California punk quartet the Side Eyes, raises interesting questions about nature versus nurture -- the eternal scientific debate about whether a human being's personality is predetermined by genetics or whether it's actually shaped by the environment one grows up in. Their lead singer, Astrid McDonald, is a fascinating test case. The 22-year-old Angeleno is the real-wild-child daughter of Go-Go's guitarist-songwriter Charlotte Caffey and Redd Kross singer-guitarist Jeff McDonald. How much has McDonald's notoriously fiery onstage presence been influenced by basic heredity and how much was her personality inspired by being raised by two legendary punk-pop icons? Similarly, how did growing up together as brothers in New Jersey affect the hard-driving musical attack of 22-year-old guitarist Kevin Devine and 20-year-old bassist Chris Devine? Much of rock history has been fueled by the unique familial dynamics and sibling rivalries of brothers in bands, from the Everly Brothers and the Kinks' Ray and Dave Davies to Redd Kross' Jeff and Steven McDonald. When the two Devines' aggressive approach is combined with 23-year-old San Diego native Nick Arnold's remorselessly throttling drumming, the Side Eyes end up as a powerfully controlled punk rock machine that blows past the sonic barriers of their past inspirations."

MARIETAN, PIERRE: Rose Des Vents 2LP (MANA 001LP)
Restocked. "First commissioned by the French Government in 1981, the LP Rose Des Vents evolved out of a six year project by Swiss composer Pierre Mariétan to document and musicalise the sound environment of urban landscapes within France, creating an inter-geographical auditory map of cities and townships located in the suburban reaches of Paris, including Bezons, Herblay, Montmagny and l'Isle Adam. Through a mix of field recording, interviews, vegetable market catcalls, braying animals and urban hubbub, Mariétan paints a broad, psycho-acoustically vivid and decentralised profile of metropolitan life from the period; carried to the ear through a coupling with musical studio performance and serialist compositional technique. Over an hour and forty minutes, the recording provides an intersectional and ambient passage through environmental and urban narratives, the radiophonic voice of Ana de Carvalho offering fleeting, poetic orientation with announcements of each titled scene, divining and evoking the sonorous qualities of each landscape as it comes into focus. Each scene tangible yet non-specific, the artist arranging and signalling the possibility of civic and pastoral space as a musical container for spontaneous, sonorous interactions. Mariétan's profile is of a rigorous yet open and exploratory composer, utilising principles of chance and curiosity in organising found sound and often negotiating or encouraging encounters with improvisatory gesture or incidental and occurring sound. In 1966 he established the outfit GERM, grouping composers and musicians dedicated to developing new meeting points between composition and improvisation. Members assist in contributing recordings and performances throughout Rose Des Vents, including musical passages on piano, synthesizer, horn and saxophone. These studio pieces, played on saxophone by Daniel Kientzy or piano by Gerard Fremy, recall and redeploy techniques developed over the lifespan of the project, where site-specific actions and concerts were performed within each of the towns. In many ways, the album is a folding of each facet of the author's life and work into a single representative culmination. A sympathy towards radiophonic or documentary production values is recognisable -- Mariétan produced two iterations of Rose Des Vents for Alain Trutat and Jean Tardieu's ground-breaking Atelier De Création Radiophonique on Radio France Culture ahead of this LP release -- alongside the influence of his work in urban acoustics and research into forms of sound ecology. So too is the obvious pleasure taken in introducing the sweetness of music to children, with notable samples from his educational workshops and sound installations helping to internalise and evoke a sense of inquisitive delight. It's these components, combined with themes and concerns about the acoustic environment that resonate thirty years later and establish Rose Des Vents as such an approachable, listenable and lovely piece of experimental sound art. The conjuration of an emotional or psychological plane through musical and metaphorical synthesis allows the listener to situate themselves within the montage in a near cinematic manner, discovering an underlying sonority embedded in the psychic atmospheres of communal life." "Play back sequence: IA [side A], IB [side C], IIA [side B], IIB [side D]. Should be respected to ensure the continuity of the composition. Two turntables recommended for optimal listening conditions."

SANNHET: So Numb CD (PFL 187CD)
"Brooklyn instrumental post-metal power trio Sannhet formed in late 2010 and since then have been recognized as one of the most promising and newer prominent bands within the genre. Their last, sophomore album Revisionist (Flenser Records), was praised across the board, one of the most celebrated albums in this specific genre of that year, and now with their new full-length So Numb they have delivered their most transcendent album to date. For this album the band enlisted respected producer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Japandroids, Kurt Vile) who was essential in helping the trio reach a new level with their sound, going beyond the typical trappings of post-metal and expanding it into the realms of electronic, experimental, and ambient, while still upholding their heavy and punishing sound. The trio created songs with a stronger focus on songwriting, with more memorable and evocative melodies permeating the entire album, making it a listening experience like no other."

CONRAD, TONY: Ten Years Alive On The Infinite Plain 2LP (SV 049LP)
2017 repress; double LP version. "Ten Years Alive On The Infinite Plain is the quintessential work of artist/filmmaker/composer Tony Conrad. Comprised of both film installation and minimalist score for amplified strings, Ten Years leaps across genre and medium to connect his revolutionary structural filmmaking with the experiments in long-duration sound that Conrad had begun in the 1960s as part of the Theatre of Eternal Music. 'Ten Years began with image before sound,' writes Andrew Lampert, 'a row of quadruple projections arranged side-by-side, all the shuffling stripes cascading into each other. Over the next two hours the music throbbed and the projectors incrementally shifted inwards, their beams gradually uniting to form one pulsating, overlapping picture.' For its 1972 premiere at New York's The Kitchen, Ten Years included Conrad on violin as well as Rhys Chatham and Laurie Spiegel performing on instruments of the composer's own making. Chatham played the Long String Drone -- a 6-foot long strip of wood with bass strings, electric pickup, tuning keys, tape, rubber band and metal hardware -- while Spiegel carried out an arrhythmic bass pulse throughout. Superior Viaduct is honored to present this previously unreleased recording of Ten Years Alive On The Infinite Plain's breathtaking premier performance. As Chatham recounts in the liner notes, 'When I first listened to this recording after not hearing it for over 40 years, it transported me back to the early Kitchen and the heyday of early minimalism, played outside the Dream Syndicate.' WRECK AND REFERENCE: Black Cassette LP (FLENSER 081EP)
"Back in 2011, experimental upstarts Wreck And Reference self-released their debut EP, Black Cassette. Drawing on the blown-out intensity of black metal and the angularity of noise rock, their radical vision captivated the underground music scene, including The Flenser. It was immediately apparent that the band's intriguing realm of heavy music represented an existential challenge to genre orthodoxy. Their crashing riffs and abrasive noise, fraught with themes of determinism and Cormac McCarthy-esque isolation, were a breath of apocalyptic air in an often stagnant world. But the most surprising aspect of their artfully constructed sound was that the duo utilized only samples and live drums to create it. Recorded in a garage in the 'howling wastelands' of California, this was originally self-released by the band as a limited cassette in 2011, then as a limited CDr on Music Ruins Lives. Later that year it was remastered for a vinyl release by The Flenser. That version is long sold out and has become a sought-after collector's item. Now it has been re-pressed on vinyl from the original master for the first time since its initial run with brand new artwork."

ACCIDENT DU TRAVAIL: Tres Precieux Sang LP (TRILOGY 038LP)
2017 repress. "Terrific record! Eight charged, intimate meditations by Julie Normal and Olivier Demeaux, playing a rickety ondes Martenot and an old church harmonium. Gripping, detailed, stately improvisation -- a bit like the ùrlars in classical bagpipe music -- which nervily mixes the sternly doom-laden with precarious, other-worldly wonderment. (The ondes Martenot is an amazing twentieth-century instrument -- beloved by Messiaen, for example, and Varese. The theme-song of Star Trek is a vocal forgery of its sound. 'J'aime cette fragilité qui côtoie la capacité de te décoller le tympan sur certaines fréquences inopinément,' says Julie. 'Je tiens une bombe dans les mains. J'aime son instabilité, son humanité.') Wood, breath, blood, eggshells... on the night of a purple moon. Very warmly recommended."

PATRICK AND THE BARITONE SAXOPHONE RETINUE, PAT: Sound Advice (2017 Repress) LP (ARTYARD 014B-LP)
2017 repress of Art Yard's 2015 reissue. Originally released in 1977 by Sun Ra's El Saturn label. Includes printed inner sleeve. As composer, bandleader, and full-time member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Pat Patrick was a visionary musician whose singular contribution to the jazz tradition has not yet been fully recognized. As well as holding down the baritone spot in the Arkestra for 35 years, Patrick played flute and alto, composed in both jazz and popular idioms, and was a widely respected musician, playing with Duke Ellington, Eric Dolphy, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane, with whom he appeared on Africa/Brass (1961). But he is best known for his crucial contributions to key Sun Ra recordings including Angels and Demons at Play (1967), Jazz in Silhouette (1959), and The Nubians of Plutonia (1967), among dozens of others. But as a bandleader, Patrick only released one LP -- the almost mythical Sound Advice, recorded with his Baritone Saxophone Retinue, a unique gathering of baritone saxophone masters including Charles Davis and René McLean. Sound Advice is a deep-hued exploration of this special instrument, a lost masterpiece of Arkestrally-minded Ellingtonia on which higher adepts of the lower cosmic tones are heard in rare conference. Unissued since original release, this unique jazz masterpiece now returns to the limelight. Released in collaboration with the Pat Patrick estate. Remastered and restored sound. Liner notes by scholar and musician Bill Banfield.

FUNCTION: Recompiled I/II 2LP (ATON 002LP)
First part of a two-part Function retrospective from Ostgut Ton sublabel A-Ton. A mixture of released and previously unreleased tracks, including Function's remix of "Falling The Same Way" by Sandwell District and "Golden Dawn (feat. Stefanie Parnow) (Version)" by Function. "Once a cathedral, now a mall, Limelight was last in the line of Manhattan clubs whose lineage could be traced back to New York's fertile club era of the '70s and '80s, which included the East Village punk and no wave scenes, the Mudd Club, Danceteria and the Paradise Garage. It's connected to a storied New York history -- sometimes holy, sometimes notorious. . . . 'A lot of things that were worlds apart met in that deconsecrated Episcopal church,' recalls David Sumner. 'I used to practically live in that club, going two or three nights a week for years. I knew this was what I was going to do with the rest of my life.' In many ways Limelight was America's rave incubator. On a New Music Seminar night in July of 1992, the revolution was about to take hold. 'Walking in, I didn't know what was going on. Then I started to see xeroxed Underground Resistance 8 1/2 x 11s all around the club, like the kind of inserts that came inside their EPs,' Dave recalls. He would go on to see Mike Banks, Rob 'Noise' Hood, and Jeff Mills perform for an electrified crowd as UR. 'That night straight up changed my life.' . . . New York itself is a major influence for Dave, as is its history of clubs -- from discos and house music, to techno and raves. Think of Todd Terry's 1988 Black Riot record or Boyd Jarvis' 1983 release 'The Music Got Me' as milestones on this journey. 'It's a DJ's approach to music. I remember in the early '90s when the music was changing so rapidly and it felt so revolutionary, separating my records into piles and thinking "I need more of this -- there needs to be more of this kind of record."' It's passion that drives this story of a life in music, and it's a desire to blow your mind the same way his inspirations blew his. Function is always innovating and finding new ways to connect the dots, to continually pursue the art of storytelling through giant slabs of sound." --Brendan M. Lebanese musician, producer, and sound engineer Fadi Tabbal's work consists of guitar pieces ranging from stripped acoustics to ambient and shoegaze-inspired treatments. REBOTINI, ARNAUD: 120 Beats Per Minute (Original Soundtrack) CD (BEC 5543194)
House music broke through in France in 1987, at the same time when AIDS arrived in the country with the first contamination peak in gay and drug addict circles. In 1989, the founders of advocacy group Act Up-Paris knew that the fight against AIDS and triumphant house music should be joined together. From 1992 to 1995, the period covered by Robin Campillo's 2017 film 120 battements par minute (120 Beats per Minute), house reached its most beautiful plateau though techno was also becoming dominant. 120 Beats per Minute, winner of the Grand Prix at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, captures a moment of coming together through clubbing, a moment when fears are forgotten in the dance with what Act Up called "the chosen family." Flooded with light, this is their activist sanctuary. Arnaud Rebotini, who composed the soundtrack of Campillo's 2013 film Eastern Boys, is a recognized DJ and composer. His soundtrack work is marked by his tasteful love for house and techno. With his score for 120 Beats per Minute, he accompanies and supports the images with a process marked by deep respect, including his remix of Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy." But this soundtrack is not nostalgic -- it's a modern look at what occurred a long time ago, with the same fascination for synthesizers of that era where the analog was so important. The soundtrack is what balances this film and what justifies such a conceptual title: 120 BPM, the natural rhythm of both house and the heart, the music that kept the people from losing hope. CD version presented in Digipak with four-page booklet; includes four bonus tracks (including Kenlou's remix of Rebotini's "What About This Love").

CLUSTER: Qua CD (BB 274CD)
Reissue of the last studio album by Cluster, the legendary krautronic duo of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, recorded in Ohio in 2009 by Tim Story. From Story's liner notes: "My role, as I imagined it, was to emulate Conny Plank, the great Cluster producer and a hero I'd never had a chance to meet. An impossible burden of course, so I simply tried to make the recording process as invisible as possible, offer as many interesting sonic options as I could, and give Cluster the chance to be Cluster -- to express that deep and unique dialog that only Moebi and Achim fully understand. Moebi had brought along some of his wonderfully quirky loops, but the rest was simply an embrace of the technology and toys that they found in the studio. Old drum machines, a gaudy orange Farfisa (solos on which Achim would always seem to center around the one temperamentally unreliable note), cutting edge keyboards and processors, a cheap Yamaha Omnichord. The results were, to my ears at least, stunning. Seventeen miniature worlds, some icy, some warm, all infused with that Cluster elusiveness and unpredictability. Playful, dark, funny, human, Qua captures that deceptive Cluster heartbeat -- unmistakably modern but utterly timeless. Adorned later with Moebi's slyly nonsensical titles ('Putoil' for example, which features a 'solo' made from Moebi's recording of our squeaky bathroom door), and his cheerfully Dada cover, Qua's evolution was a true privilege to witness. Achim told me recently that he considers Qua the perfect swansong for Cluster. At the time, though, the album's freshness and open-ended creativity seemed like simply another alluring dispatch from a conversation that would pick up again many more times, as it had for four decades. But Moebi's passing in 2015 gives Qua a finality that contradicts the music's transitory, slippery otherworldliness. The album's closing track 'Imtrerion,' with Moebi's deeply stirring loop embellished ever so gracefully with Achim's spare accompaniment, never fails to choke me up."

CLUSTER & FARNBAUER: Live in Vienna 1980 CD (BB 275CD)
The first live recording of Cluster (Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius), and their only collaboration with Austrian musician Joshi Farnbauer (drums and percussion), recorded in Vienna in 1980. A sonic throwback to their early years, reissued on CD. Were one to be presented with two separate stacks of Cluster recordings -- one composed of their studio work, the other of live performances -- an innocent listener might conclude they are the efforts of two completely different artists. This would understandably have been the case in 1980, when the structured, tuneful miniatures of 1979's Grosses Wasser (BB 026CD/LP) and 1981's Curiosum (BB 038CD/LP) were unlikely bookends to the sprawling electroacoustic abstractions of Live in Vienna. But as fans of the idiosyncratic duo already knew, Cluster's trajectory was always a restless one -- more about disruption than gentle evolution. As Live in Vienna's sound engineer, Eric Spitzer-Marlyn, recalls, Cluster's 1980 performance at the Wiener Festwochen Alternativ would have been called a "happening" in an earlier time. Growing out of the Actionism movement of the '60s, the festival was more performance art than music concert. Disdainful of the tired, commodified art of the establishment, it was a sound marked by brash, improvised, avant-garde techniques. Spitzer-Marlyn also recalls that it was loud. For those who had grown up with Cluster's accessible '70s work with Eno and Plank, and their collaboration with Michael Rother in Harmonia, Live in Vienna's slow-growing swaths of electronics and noise must have represented a bit of a shock. But it was really more of a throwback to Cluster's earliest years, when they performed dense electronic "jams" with Conrad Schnitzler as Kluster. The addition in Vienna of Joshi Farnbauer, a friend and fellow artist who played percussion and explored the sound possibilities of his own sculptures, also mirrored the fluid and spontaneous configurations that characterized those times. As chance would have it, they never met up with Farnbauer again.

MOLE, THE: Little Sunshine EP 12" (CCS 107EP)
Colin de la Plante aka The Mole follows releases on Wagon Repair, Philpot, Perlon, and more with this work of stripped-back, understated disco grooves and infectious, cyclical melodic patterns. The title-track brings a mellow introspection to the track as a neat counterpoint to the energy of the drums and arpeggios. "Discotheque Airplane" features dusty samples and truly mesmerizing bass that swells in and out. The B-side features a collaboration with Tom Trago that finds the pair exploring lean, focused techno, plus a remix of their track by Aardvarck, who takes the subtle foundations of the original and builds delicate, lilting melodies on top.

MAYER, DAVID: Drained EP 12" (CONNECTED 019EP)
David Mayer needs little introduction. Affiliated with the flourishing Keinemusik label, his output as a producer and a DJ since the mid-2000s has been massive, forging his name as an expert in funked-up, pounding, deep techno and house. On "Drained (feat. Sooma)," Sooma's mesmerizing, pensive vocals keep the floor gripped before the silky bass action makes its presence felt, relentlessly adding to the vibrant atmosphere. "Movement" is classic David Mayer in techno mode, starting low-key and building up with tight electrifying synths until the kick comes in.

ZOMBIES IN MIAMI: Take Control EP 12" (CORR 058EP)
Mexican maestros Zombies In Miami return to Jennifer Cardini's label with two supreme space-aged head jams. Following disco excursions on Hippie Dance and Bordello A Parigi, the duo retreat to the shadier, heavyweight side of their signature sound with "Take Control," a glacial creeper laced with frosty electroid synths and a shouldering, hypnotic beat, and "Last Gun," which creates an ominous fog through which the sunlit arpeggios climb. The EP also includes on-point remixes from the Lipsky brothers' Simple Symmetry project and INIT (Benedikt Frey and Nadia D'Alo).

DRONE: Mappa Mundi CD (DRONE 001CD)
This the first CD released by drøne (Mark Van Hoen and Mike Harding), after two vinyl albums released by Anna von Hausswolff's Pomperipossa label. Presented in a 5-inch jacket with artwork and font by Nico (who also provided the hand-written text for the vinyl artwork of the duo's first two releases), Mappa Mundi traces and describes audio surrounding and occupying the planet Earth. Workers toil in smithies, call signs and chants-at-prayer reveal attempts to order the chaos, which always remains one step ahead. Post-lapsarian for sure, but smoke signals and drums have morphed into the "bing-bong"' of the attention-grabbing, mind-polluting PA system. The coded simplicity of the whistle ("Start!") has evolved into a more deliberate attempt to control rather than inform by explicit, structured language. Announcements have become commands; signs bark orders. Thus "no" becomes a powerful rejection, rather than merely an inclination; and no-ers are more easily to spot . . . "You're going the wrong way"! (To which the only sensitive and mature response is: "Indeed!") Organic and man-made call signs, IDs, audio sigils, and signatures all combine to describe a polluted, confusing atmosphere that threatens to leave us powerless and bewildered. "Decipher the sounds and you win the game! First prize is, guess what? You get to take the audio poison! Congratulations! You've lost!" A dynamic and involving result ensures a challenging but no less enjoyable listen. The first drøne album, 2016's Reversing into the Future (PR 002LP), drew this response from Lend Me Your Ears: "This thrilling piece -- surely the most kinetic non-dancefloor record in an age." Anna von Hausswolff herself wrote of the follow-up record, 2017's A Perfect Blind (PR 003LP), "I love everything about this release. Such a great presentation and exciting project! And most important: the music is sublime." The Quietus wrote: "Last year's distinctive debut from Drøne was likened to a hurtling journey. It's combination of field recordings, shortwave radio and modular synths possessed an excited, driving energy whose route was hitherto unexplored and destination unknowable. But with an expanded sound pool boasting instruments across the ages - from guitar, through pipe organ and strings to dulcimer and psaltery -- its follow-up takes a sideways step into more cognizant, reflective pastures."

DESVARIEUX, JACOB F.: Anthology Pt.3 12" (EF 082EP)
The third and final part of the Jacob F. Desvarieux anthology on Endless Flight brings two more hot productions of the fabled French zouk veteran with roots in Guadeloupe. "Rifyx" is taken from Desvarieux's 1985 album Oh Madiana and delivers arresting jazz-funk and zouk-suspense enlarged with touching horns, synth-enthusiasm, and longing female vocals. The second song comes from the Paris-based, West Cameroon-born singer Tala, produced by desvarieux for Tala's album Mother Africa (1982). Japanese producer Kuniyuki edits "Rifyx" and turns it into an epic, soulful, eight-minute-long dream house anthem.

AYLER, ALBERT: Bells (White Vinyl) LP (ESPDISK 1010EP)
Reissue on 180-gram opaque white vinyl. Originally released in 1965. The transitional "Bells" was just under 20 minutes, released originally as one side of a clear vinyl LP with the other side empty of music. It was recorded at a May 1, 1965, Town Hall concert of ESP artists, displaying Albert Ayler's new group, which added Albert's brother Donald and Charles Tyler. The denser sound of "Bells" shows Ayler moving towards the bigger sonic statement made on Spirits Rejoice (ESPDISK 1020CD/LP), his September 23, 1965, Judson Hall session. By the way, "Bells" as heard here is not, in fact, a single composition; rather, it is a medley moving from "Holy Ghost" to an unnamed theme and then into "Bells" proper. ESP-Disk' founder Bernard Stollman was so excited by "Bells" that it was released without delaying to record additional music to fill the other side of the LP. Both Donald Ayler and Charles Tyler were making their recorded debuts; Tyler would go on to record for ESP as a leader (Charles Tyler Ensemble (ESPDISK 1029CD, 1966), and Eastern Man Alone (ESPDISK 1059CD, 1967)). One vinyl pressing of Spiritual Unity (ESPDISK 1002CD/LP) in the '60s substituted a different track for "Spirits." Mr. Stollman had no memory of how this had happened, but it was subsequently corrected and became a rarity known only to rabid collectors and ESP fanatics. The one that is on all the CDs (except for one Japanese release with both) and all the rest of the vinyl editions is the same tune as what is titled "Saints" on Witches & Devils (aka Spirits, recorded on February 24, 1964). The anomalous substitution, which does sound somewhat similar, is the same tune known as "Vibrations" on the album Vibrations (aka Ghosts) and as "[tune Q]2" in Revenant's Holy Ghost boxed set. Martin Davidson (owner of Emanem, another indie label responsible for many groundbreaking jazz releases) suggested that ESP-Disk' include this mysterious rarity on its 50th-anniversary CD edition of Spiritual Unity (ESPDISK 1002CD), and supplied the sound file. ESP kept the vinyl edition of Spiritual Unity as originally intended. How to get "Vibrations" out on vinyl, then? Well, Bells has long had plenty of open space on its B-side. . . .

BLEY TRIO, PAUL: Closer LP (ESPDISK 1021LP)
When Oscar Peterson moved from Montréal to New York in 1949, then-17-year-old Paul Bley took over Peterson's residency at the Alberta Lounge on Peterson's recommendation; in his 20s, Bley played with Charlie Parker. Bley incorporated maverick pianist Lennie Tristano's approach to improvisation and collaborated with Charles Mingus, and in 1958 in Los Angeles famously put together a band with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins. His move into free improvisation in the groundbreaking Jimmy Giuffre 3 brought him acclaim. After moving to New York, he was one of the performers at the Cellar Café in Bill Dixon's 1965 four-day "October Revolution in Jazz" festival, which led to Bley being one of the co-founders shortly thereafter of the Jazz Composers Guild. It was in the midst of that fabled month that Bley recorded his first LP for ESP-Disk' (sixth overall to that point), Barrage. Bley returned to the studio for his second ESP-Disk' LP a bit less than two months later. Closer finds Bley again heavily featuring then-wife Carla's compositions; she's credited on seven of the ten tracks, including two also heard on Barrage, "Batterie" and "And Now the Queen." They sound quite different on this quieter trio date, and the performances are more concise (no track tops the 3:30 mark). Paul Bley included one of his own tunes, "Figfoot," as well as Ornette Coleman's "Crossroads" and future-wife Annette Peacock's "Cartoon." Closer features Bley's distinctive pianism in one of its earliest recorded manifestations. The other players are fellow Jimmy Giuffre 3 member Steve Swallow (bass) and, in his recording debut, Barry Altschul (percussion).

FAUTZI, LEWIS: Degrees EP 12" (FIGURE 089EP)
Lewis Fautzi's fourth EP for Figure is a collection of tunes that interlock seamlessly in a gradual progression, displaying his skill for crafting tailor-made tools for every energy-level. Starting out with two elastic grooves, the A-side carefully sets the scene for what is yet to come. Careful layers of rich acid riffs and precise placement of atmospheric details and fine-tuned textures -- this clearly is the work of a producer on top his game. Keeping the finesse, but amping up the oomph, the B-side bursts out with two heavy-hitters that pull out all the stops.

KAYN, ROLAND: A Little Electronic Milky Way of Sound 16CD BOX (FR 007-022CD)
frozen reeds presents the première release of Roland Kayn's 14-hour masterpiece, A Little Electronic Milky Way of Sound, as a 16-CD boxed set. Roland Kayn's truly epic A Little Electronic Milky Way of Sound is both a major late opus and a summation of his vast contribution to the fields of electronic music and composition. Hearing the briefest passage of this piece, assembled in 2009, is enough to date the material of which it is composed back to the era of Kayn's noteworthy LP boxed sets, released on the Colosseum label in the late '70s and early '80s. Kayn's so-called "cybernetic music," to use the term he preferred, resolutely refuses to showcase the methods employed in its creation. The mass of logical interactions and correspondences underpinning the sounds are submerged so deeply below the surface as to defy analysis. One is left only with the results, which grant the listener a profound and unique experience. With A Little Electronic Milky Way of Sound, Kayn provides both a vast sonic territory and the invitation to explore it. From glacial, drone-like vistas to violent staccato sequences, the piece's 22 movements chart the length and breadth of electronic music in as comprehensive a manner as has ever been attempted. The resurgence of the modular synthesizer as a popular musical tool in recent years belies the possibility that its boldest virtuosi may already lie in the instrument's past. In his work in Europe's electronic music studios alongside colleagues such as Leo Küpper and Jaap Vink, Kayn created sonic textures in such abundant variety as to make genre-categorization redundant. Photographs of the one-off, hand-built systems upon which they were realized have inspired the awe of electronic-music connoisseurs for years, but their output has been all too little heard and appreciated. In 2017, Roland Kayn represents perhaps one of the last titanic figures of 20th-century music to receive their due recognition, and to have their vital music restored to availability. Fresh from its 2016 release of Julius Eastman's Femenine (FR 006CD), which spurred on its composer's wider rediscovery and gave rise to performances, broadcasts, and festivals devoted to his work around the world, frozen reeds is proud to initiate the first stage of a similar process for Roland Kayn, which his incredible music so richly deserves. Edition of 750. Audio restoration by Jim O'Rourke. Artwork by Robert Beatty.

ABATWA (THE PYGMY): Why Did We Stop Growing Tall? CD (GB 049CD)
The Abatwa ("pygmy") are one of Africa's most endangered peoples. This album -- produced by Ian Brennan (Hanoi Masters (GB 021CD/LP), Zomba Prison Project, Tinariwen) -- is a stunning, spirited document of their deep and varied musical culture. The fourth volume in Glitterbeat's Hidden Musics series, it collects rough-hewn, tribal sonics from the Rwandan borderlands, where haunted solo and group singing meets hand-fashioned string instruments and battery-operated loop machines. The textures are strange and abstract but at the same time intimate and joyful. Performers include: Christoph Ntabanganyimana, Bihoyiki Dathive, Emmanuel Hatungimana, Teonesse Majambere, Beatrice Mukarungi, Rosine Nyiranshimiyimana, Ruth Nyiramfumukoye, Patrick Manishimine, Jean Claude Nzabonimpa, Jean Baptiste Kanyambo, Emmanuel Habumuremy, and Ange Kamagaju.
Notes by producer Ian Brennan: "In a land where men lead each other hand-in-hand, but homophobia runs rampant, we drove off the main road and miles up the ridge to one of the pockets hardest hit by the genocide -- a place where the residents stopped waving back. An area so very isolated, it was as if the genocide had never ended. Topping that, we were traveling this dirt trail with two Tutsis in an area where they had recently been 'hunting Rwandans,' and a sense of discomfort was tangible, as if an invisible line had been crossed and we'd entered ibiwa ('problems'). . . . The Abatwa ("pygmy") tribe is identified as one of the most marginalized, voiceless and endangered populations in Africa. In fact, their name is frequently taken in vain as a generalized slur towards others unrelated to them. Still, many among their group prefer the term to the official, PC mouthful/post-genocidal replacement moniker that they have been straddled with out of clear overcompensation: 'The people who were left behind because of the facts of Rwandan history.' . . . We were lucky enough to experience a 19-year-old female freestyle rapper, Rosine Nyiranshimiyimana, who is grittier than most any gangsta'. And right by her side, stood, Emmanuel Hatungimana, the mohawk-cut traditional music master, along with the husband/wife team that traded in eerie harmonies that nearly make Black Sabbath sound a bit trite. And keeping it in the family, mother and son, Ruth Nyiramfumukoye and Patrick Manishimine struck dueling Umudulis. A featured instrument is the 11-string Icyembe, one that has a resemblance not unlike a surfboard and when turned upright, stands taller than some of its Abatwa players."

SAZ'ISO: At Least Wave Your Handkerchief At Me: The Joys and Sorrows of Southern Albanian Song CD (GB 053CD)
"Why not give yourself a break from the unending cavalcade of modern high-speed insanity, and rest up with this album of deep soul from Southern Albania." --Ry Cooder
Brazilian samba, Bosnian Sevdah, New Orleans jazz, Cuban son -- and Albanian Saze! The turn of the last century saw mass migrations to the world's cities with rural people bringing their music with them, adapting their traditions to new circumstances and modern instruments. Of all these great musical forms, the mesmerizing arabesques, joyful dances, and heart-breaking laments of Saze are among the least recorded, and they remain largely unknown outside Albania. At Least Wave Your Handkerchief At Me: The Joys and Sorrows of Southern Albanian Song is the debut of Saz'iso, a group of virtuoso musicians and legendary singers assembled by veteran producer Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, ¡Cubanismo!, Songhai) and his co-producers, Edit Pula and Andrea Goertler. The album was recorded live, with no overdubs, by Grammy-winning engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Ali Farka Touré, Orchestra Baobab) over three days of October 2016 at the Akademia e Filmit dhe Multimedias Marubi in Tirana, Albania. The music of Southern Albania is iso-polyphonic, which means that it combines at least two melodic vocal lines, a lead (marrës, the "taker") and a second (prerës, the "cutter"), with a multi-voiced drone or iso. When manufactured "tempered" instruments arrived in the region in the late 19th century, Saze ensembles were born; clarinets and violins took on the roles of the lead and second voices while lutes carried the iso. As Vasil S. Tole, Albania's leading expert on iso-polyphony -- and an inspiring advisor to this project -- puts it: "Saze remains to this day the musical language of the cities of Southern Albania, where East and West embraced when European instruments collided with the magic of a cappella iso-polyphony, and where life and death still coexist in a sound that is truly unique." Donika Pecallari: voice; Adrianna Thanou: voice; Robert Tralo: voice; Aurel Qirjo: violin and voice; Telando Feto: clarinet; Agron Murat: llautë (lute); Agron Nasi: dajre (frame drum); Pëllumb Meta: fyell (flute) and voice.

TOOTARD: Laissez Passer CD (GB 054CD)
TootArd are a young, trailblazing ensemble from the occupied Golan Heights who deftly fuse Levant-tinted desert blues, melodic psych-rock, morphed reggae, and classical Arabic modalities. Their second album, Laissez Passer, is their debut international release and one of the first such releases from their homeland. Restless, buoyant, and eclectic. A Laissez Passer. Let him pass. That's the document the stateless carry. It's all that those from the occupied Golan Heights possess. Since 1967 the area has been part of Israel, but the inhabitants aren't Israelis. They don't have any citizenship. They don't have passports. Just a Laissez Passer. And for the members of TootArd, who all grew up in the village of Majdal Shams in the Golan, it's a very apt name for their second album. "Laissez passers are special situation papers," explains singer and guitarist Hasan Nakhleh. "It took us a while to realise the effect. We're permanent residents in Israel, but not citizens. We have no travel documents. When we travel we need the laissez passer. With no nationality, we're officially 'undefined.'" But in statelessness, the five-piece has discovered musical freedom. TootArd grew up understanding that borders are something imposed by governments, lines that only exist on a map. On a disc, in concert, they can go wherever their imagination carries them. They carry their citizenship inside. "What we do now is the result of everything we've ever done and heard," Nakhleh says. "We began listening to Tuareg music and we fell in love with it. It resonated with us. North African music is something we've heard since we were children. We all grew up with classical Arab music. In finding our own sound, we've discovered things from all over." With its insistent riff that evokes the space of the desert; the glorious, driving, funky percussion; and an electric guitar that Nakhleh modified with extra frets to sound like an oud, the title-track builds a manifesto that bonds West Africa and the Maghreb to the Levant. It's a thrilling opener; more than that, it's a very catchy one, with the subtle reggae flourishes adding an organic international feel. TootArd are not "undefined"; they've fashioned their own identity in their music, creating a bond of the stateless that reaches from the Levant to the Tuareg -- another people without a real home -- and reaches out far beyond. Let them pass.

Solomun's remix creates a sensual, slippery experience with molten bass and slinky electro breakbeats.

VOIGT, REINHARD: Apokalypse Mau 12" (KOM 368EP)
Kompakt co-founder Reinhard Voigt's varied body of work has informed the label's musical history from the very start -- be it with his ambient dance project Sturm, rowdy techno alias S.R.I., experimental Profan staple Pentax, or simply under his given name. Voigt's output has also found a home on such iconic imprints as Mille Plateaux and Harvest, but also helped kickstart younger labels like Kompakt sublabel KX. Apokalypse Mau features two cuts of raw, sizzling, single-minded techno that find unexpected momentum in barebones synths and seemingly random bleeps.

HARRY PUSSY: A Real New England Fuck Up LP (PAL 049LP)
Previously unreleased mid-'90s live recordings of Harry Pussy in peak trio formation, with extensive eye-witness liner notes by Siltbreeze label-head Tom Lax and Tom Carter of Charalambides. Edition of 500.
"The 1996 Shadow Ring / Harry Pussy / Charalambides 'Rose Watson' tour. . . . There were two vans, three bands, two drivers. Tom Lax was at the helm, rationing the booze and blasting Killed By Death Volume Whatever all through the Midwest. I walked out of a gig in Ypsilanti and tripped on a large dildo. Soundmen held their ears in Cleveland. We rolled out of Rochester (after Adris and my bandmate Jason blew an entire soundcheck screaming insults at each other in Spanish) and the soundman stuck his head in the car and yelled 'don't ever come back!' Byron Coley booked a show in Amherst with an audience of zero. Harry Pussy and Shadow Ring played, we didn't, and everyone was hanging out afterwards in front of the Unitarian Church when the local bus pulled up. Its lone occupant stepped out, looked around, and asked 'Is this where the Harry Pussy show is?' The TT's show, snipped from the end of this tour, was a shambolic near disaster. The fact that a recording survives at all is a minor miracle. We arrived to witness openers the Cotton Kings fleeing the venue after eating a bunch of acid, destroying the PA monitors, and swiping Adris's cymbals, which one tripping, bathrobe-clad member slunk back to return later. . . . Mr. Lax tried to calm me down by feeding me bourbon shots. We played. The PA was shot and we couldn't hear each other. I hurled my guitar across the stage, poured my beer over my head, and threw a pair of slides into the crowd, narrowly missing Wayne Rogers. Harry Pussy took the stage and sandblasted the night into oblivion, while I hid in the van (Mac: 'What the fuck is your problem?') until I was sober enough to attempt to find the Greyhound station and catch the first bus back to Houston. Christina spotted me wandering off and forcibly dragged me back into the club." --Tom Carter

STILL: I LP (PAN 080LP)
Shapeshifting through his vernacular worlds of sound and imagery, Milan artist and musician Still (Simone Trabucchi) defines his practice with a unique, nomadic approach. Previously known as Dracula Lewis, the moniker under which he developed his personal take on "folk" music, he has accumulated a number of releases on various seminal labels, alongside running Hundebiss Records. His Still moniker follows the unearthing of the histories that connect his hometown of Vernasca to Ethiopia and Jamaica, explored under his visual arts project Invernomuto as an in-depth fieldwork that became Negus -- a series of sculptures and installations, a book, and a documentary (screened at Unsound 2016). Negus revolves around a cleansing counter-ritual performed by Lee "Scratch" Perry in the Vernasca square where an effigy of Haile Selassie I was burned in 1936. The documentary then follows a trajectory connecting Italy's overlooked colonial past, seen through personal history, to a reverberation of symbols in Ethiopia and Jamaica. Within Still, Trabucchi connects these research threads and furthers their sonic and linguistic aspects, developing a work in which "computerized riddims" sustain a shared gospel channeled through a polyphony of voices. Six Milan-based African-Italian vocalists and singers voice a complex, overarching past that is both communal and individual. Using the medium of language, the record is a multi-layered with meanings contemplating the historical weight of words. Both the city and the studio became workshops for the shaping of their complex network. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Artwork by Simone Trabucchi and Bill Kouligas.

MR. TOPHAT: A Memoir From The Youth Pt. II 12" (PP 023EP)
Sound does not usually come from a single source. Emotions usually do not come from a single source. Perception works by filtering. Within this complex process there are many difficulties to overcome and many discoveries to make. How long is the club inside of you? After you have been inside of him? How do love, soup, and beer choices affect your daily life? And what do an island and an airport have in common? By morphing real-life situations into musical fantasies Mr. Tophat tries to find answers to these and many other questions.

VA: Welcome To Paradise (Italian Dream House 89-93) Vol. I 2LP (SAFE 003-1LP)
First part of an expansive two-part retrospective of the Italian dream house sound compiled by Safe Trip label founder Young Marco and Christiaan Macdonald. At the tail end of the 1980s, a new take on deep house began to emerge from Italian studios. Dream house drew inspiration from key US deep house records of the period -- the spacey melodiousness of Larry Heard's productions, and the rich jazziness of tracks originating in New Jersey in particular -- but sounded distinctly different. Its "head-in-the-clouds" feel -- all rich chords, tactile basslines, fluid piano lines, and starry electronics -- made dream house a uniquely Italian proposition. First and foremost, the style echoed the wavy, glassy-eyed positivity of the period more than any other. While music in the UK and the low countries was getting faster and heavier, Italy's dream house producers continued to create music shot through with warmth and colorful musicality until 1993. While few dream house records were made after then, the style's sounds and loose aesthetic influenced subsequent styles such as trance and progressive house. During its peak, dream house -- or, as it was tagged by leading Italian label DFC, "ambient house" (echoing the similarly minded work of UK pioneers such as The Orb and The KLF) -- could be heard blaring from club sound systems across Europe. The style's popularity was fueled, in part at least, by the runaway international success of "Sueño Latino." Welcome To Paradise gathers together some of the finest examples of the style for the first time since the turn of the '90s. It includes a smattering of scene anthems, like Key Tronics Ensemble's peerless "Calypso Of House (Paradise Mix)" and the ambient mix of Last Rhythm's Italo-house classic "Last Rhythm" -- alongside a swathe of hard-to-find, in-demand, and forgotten gems. There are cuts from key players in the movement -- the likes of Don Pablo's Animals and Dreamatic -- plus a string of lesser-known names whose contribution to the evolution of the sound should not be overlooked. Over the course of two double-LP sets, Welcome To Paradise celebrates one of the most evocative and imaginative musical styles of electronic music's golden era. Vol. I artist list: Key Tronics Ensemble, Dreamatic, Night Communication, Agua Re, Deep Choice, High Tide, Don Pablo's Animals, Open Spaces, Jacy, K2, and Last Rhythm.

BEN PENN: Spare Hobby/Carrera 12" (SAFE 004EP)
June 2017, Amsterdam, NL. Conclusions of experiments with controlled doses of 4-HO-MET, codenamed ST004. The test subject -- code name Ben Penn -- was ushered into the bunker for immediate testing. Afterward, Penn was able to play two audio interpretations of his experience. He was visibly shaken. The first Penn called: 'Spare Bobby.' He described the resultant musical translation as 'higher level inter-dimensional funk.' The second interpretation was titled 'Carrera' and composed during a period of vivid hallucination. Immediate action must now be taken in order to control the spread of 4-HO-MET amongst the wider civilian population.

CEMENT: Utmaningen LP (SHAD 192LP)
Cement is from the island of Gotland, 200 miles east of Sweden's mainland. This island has always been different from the rest of Sweden in many ways, with their own strong dialect and mythology. The local mythology about Gotland, which dates back to the year 1350, holds that Gotland remained underwater during the daylight hours and only surfaced during the night because of a mysterious spell cast upon the island. Cement was formed during the autumn of 1973 by two guitar players (Björn Jonsson and Anders Åström) and two drummers (Ulf Abrahamsson and Thomas Harlevi). They were influenced by such bands as Mountain, Grand Funk Railroad, and of course the Swedish power trio November. They recorded Utmaningen in 1977 and released it in a limited run of 100 cassette tapes. This is the first LP release of the album. Instrumentally, Utmaningen is a tour de force, every bit as excellent as any of the better-known heavy rock album from the Swedish '70s. Heavy dual guitars, powerful bass, amazing drums, with fantastic production. 180-gram vinyl. Heavy sleeve. Includes two-page insert with liner notes and photos. Numbered edition of 400.

ALRUNE ROD: Hej Du LP (SHAD 193LP)
Shadoks follows its reissue of the 1969 debut by Alrune Rod, of the most popular hippie bands from Denmark, and their third album (SHAD 187LP, 1972), with this reissue of Hej Du, their amazing second album from 1971. The band took its name from the Danish term for the mandrake root, inspired by the Danish author Albert Dam's 1962 book Syv Fortællinger (Seven Stories). The book contains a story in which a Robin Hood-like character is sentenced to death by hanging. At the jerk of the noose he ejaculates, a mandrake root grows up where his semen hits the ground, and a virgin collects and cares for the root, which in turn brings good fortune. Alrune Rod's musical style is often described as a hybrid between the Grateful Dead and early Pink Floyd. Hej Du is their real masterpiece. By late summer 1970 Alrune Rod had started recording the album and were given unlimited studio time at Vanløse Bio, a movie theater that housed and operated the Ivar Rosenberg Lydteknik studio at night after the final film screening. The studio was advanced for the time, with a home-built multi-track tape recorder that allowing for experimentation. Hej Du was released in June 1971 with promotional concerts by the new Alrune Rod scheduled across the country. Band member Leif Roden later recalled that Hej Du was on the radio charts for weeks during the summer of 1971, and sold a record-high 12,000 copies. According to the chart lists, Hej Du entered the bi-weekly top-ten album list on June 12, 1971 and stayed there until August 4, with a top position at number-three after Skousen & Ingemann's Herfra Hvor Vi Står and The Doors' L.A. Woman. Hej Du is as close to Pink Floyd's early sound as any other album from Denmark. Fantastic production and great, long, trippy, psychedelic tracks. 180-gram vinyl. Heavy sleeve. Includes printed inner sleeve and two-page insert. Numbered edition of 500.

NGOZI FAMILY FEATURING CHRIS ZEBBY TEMBO, THE: Heavy Connection LP (SHAD 194LP)
The Ngozi Family formed in 1975 in Lusaka, Zambia, and shot to stardom. Bandleader Paul Dobson Nyirongo aka Paul Ngozi enlisted former members of his previous band, The Three Years, and gave a popular voice to what later was called "Zamrock," a cool fusion of older African rhythms and '70s rockish underground modes -- never too polished, but with a tightness that would have made groups up in London take notice. Heavy Connection, recorded in 1978 with drummer Chrissy Zebby Tembo, features razor-sharp guitars, hard rhythms, and a mix of English and Zambian lyrics. Original copies are impossible to find. RIYL: Witch and Amanaz. Fuzz guitars all over with African beats and political lyrics. 180-gram "transparent white" vinyl. Heavy sleeve. Includes two-page insert. Numbered edition of 500.

STALTERI, ARTURO: ...E il Pavone Parlò alla Luna LP (SOAVE 006LP)
Recorded in 1980 but only issued privately in 1987, Arturo Stàlteri's ...e il pavone parlò alla Luna falls among the last artifacts of Italy's great wave of musical minimalism. Like the movement to which it belongs, rigorously resistant to categorizations and definition, this overlooked marvel sculpts a startling singularity. A radical and democratic vision in sound, blending elements of new age, the avant-garde, and prog with Western and Indian classical musics. Highly talented pianist Arturo Stàlteri debuted in 1974 with Pierrot Lunaire, one of the most original and innovative groups of the Italian progressive scene. After the dissolution of the band he began an inspirational solo career with the prog opus Andrè Sulla Luna (1979); the following year a two-month trip to India left an important impression on him and inspired ...e il pavone parlò alla Luna, which stands as Stàlteri's true masterwork. A complex and ambitious hybrid, built around organ and piano, with each passage struggling for creative autonomy and dislodging themselves from the whole, yet remaining as accessible as they are challenging, to all those willing to heed the call. Despite its repetitive rhythms and cyclical tones, bound to American minimalism, ...e il pavone parlò alla Luna's complex relationships and breadth of territory locate it as a distinctly European work, a wondrous late breath, and a seminal entry in Italy's remarkable canon of avant-garde and minimalist music. A rippling oddity, not quite like anything else, reissued here on vinyl for the first time.

VENOSTA, GIOVANNI: Olympic Signals LP (SOAVE 007LP)
Giovanni Venosta's 1984 debut album, released when the artist was only 23, is a committed, subversive parody of minimalism, and a truly original work. This is its first reissue. Recorded in Venosta's living room with a four-track Tascam, this album reveals the young pianist's profound need for expression, born out of his relationship with the sound of Terry Riley, Michael Nyman, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Penguin Café Orchestra, and Dollar Brand. The contribution of Roberto Musci results in more esoteric and mystical side of the record and marks the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration in which the arrangements of Venosta blend perfectly with the electronics and sound treatments by Musci. Forty-seven minutes of inspired Italian minimalism.

SIROM: I Can Be A Clay Snapper CD (GB 051CD)
Hailing from Slovenia, Sirom play vividly textured instrumental folk musics in which handmade global instrumentation meets fearless sound exploration. Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja first met at the improvisational music workshops conducted by leading Slovenian improviser Tomaz Grom and Japanese improvisational percussionist Seijiro Murayama. Other shared influences include classical minimalism and global musics. The couple eventually formed the kalimba-based duo Najoua, before forming Sirom with Iztok Koren. The band's emergent sound oscillates between a wide array of acoustic folk sounds and contemporary post-rock meditations, often drifting from improvisation to structured composition and then back. The trio describes it as "imaginary folk" or "folk from a parallel universe." According to Kutin, the guiding concepts of their music-making are: "To play on acoustic instruments, to work with repetition and a common sound. Each of us can play a simple thing, but the overall result is that a complex thing comes to life. The quality of sound depends on the combination of the instruments and that's why we modify and prepare instruments or create our own." As an avid sound-seeker, Kutin began to develop an interest in building instruments out of everyday objects like drawers, computer boxes and other "junk" (as he lovingly calls his creations), in addition to re-tooling the ones he brought back from his globetrotting adventures (which have included personal encounters with local musicians in India, Morocco, Mali, Greece, and elsewhere). In the little village of Lesno Brdo, tucked in the rolling hills six miles south of Ljubljana, Kravanja and Kutin organize music performances and festivals on a farm they rent, and divide their time between music-making and vegetable farming. With I Can Be A Clay Snapper, the trio have devised a work of fearlessly textured sonic landscapes both linked to and unbound by the past and present, geography and tradition, the real and imagined. Hypnotic, otherworldly, and epic, Sirom's music moves like the restless waters of their homeland. No matter how hushed or slow it may seem, it is never standing still. Iztok Koren: banjo, three-string banjo, bass drum, percussion, chimes, balafon, objects; Ana Kravanja: violin, viola, ribab, cünbüs, balafon, ngoma drum, mizmar, objects, voice; Samo Kutin: lyre, balafon, one-string bass, frame drums, brač, gongoma, mizmar, objects, voice.

HASSELL, JON: Dream Theory in Malaya: Fourth World Volume Two CD (GB 052CD)
First reissue of Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" masterpiece, originally released in 1981. Featuring contributions from Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel), and Michael Brook (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). Beautifully remastered, with a bonus track ("Ordinary Mind") and liner notes written by Hassell himself. "Fourth World is a viewpoint out of which evolves guidelines for finding balances between accumulated knowledge and the conditions created by new technologies" --Jon Hassell. From his time studying with Stockhausen in Cologne and a passage through the New York minimalist sphere with Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Philip Glass to his mentorship with the Indian vocal master Pandit Pran Nath and collaborative excursions with Eno, the Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, Björk, and Ry Cooder, Jon Hassell has pursued a continuous questioning of the dichotomies between North and South, sacred and sensual, primitive and futurist. These cross-pollinating influences and pan-cultural musical educations led Hassell to the gradual development of musical concepts and gestures that he grouped under the "Fourth World" umbrella theory. "I wanted the mental and geographical landscapes to be more indeterminate -- not Indonesia, not Africa, not this or that. . . . What would music be like if 'classic' had not been defined as what happened in Central Europe two hundred years ago. What if the world knew Javanese music and Pygmy music and Aborigine music? What would 'classical music' sound like then?" In the late 1970s in New York, Hassell began to produce a series of astonishing albums on which his trumpet explored both non-Western modalities and dramatic sound processing (deftly rendered by nascent digital effects like the AMS Harmonizer). Brian Eno, who was living New York at the time, was thrilled by Hassell's 1978 debut album, Vernal Equinox, and sought out its creator. Together they produced the classic 1980 album Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Musics (GB 019CD/LP), before Eno charged headlong into "Fourth World"-ish collaborations with a new partner, David Byrne, on Remain in Light (1980) and My Life in The Bush of Ghosts (1981). Hassell began to feel that they were at least borrowing concepts and sounds to which he had introduced them, and at worst, that a full-scale appropriation was taking place. As Hassell undertook the process of recording and finalizing Dream Theory in Malaya: Fourth World Volume Two -- the follow-up to Possible Musics -- Brian Eno was again present, as both mixer and musician, but this time the back cover credits leave no room for interpretation or confusion: "All compositions by Jon Hassell. Produced by Jon Hassell."

Reissue of Japanese artist Jun Fukamachi's 1977 electric version of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. "This superbly crafted direct-to-disk features the versatile Fukamachi as a veritable one-man band in a lively album that captures the essence of the original Beatles' tunes throughout. The innovative arrangements of the artist, tailored to get the maximum benefit from a surrounding instrument array, produce one of the better technical efforts of this series. Synthesizer effects provide special "flavor," particularly at the close of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" on side one, and in the evocative opening of "She's Leaving Home" on side two. . . . Fukamachi blends a concert grand, electric piano, Arp synthesizer, glockenspiel, bass drum, tambourine and other electronic instruments with results that indicate a group, not a solo, with ample display of each." --Billboard, September 9, 1978

BERBERIAN, CATHY: Pop Art LP (VNL 1303LP)
Cathy Berberian turned toward this repertoire critically, but with love. And even if she maintained a certain dose of ironic distance, she never stooped to parody. It would be a mistake to think she had any similarity to Paolo Poli in La Nemica. She had a repertoire to explore according to the instructions of Proust, and she explored it with the same devotion that she had applied to the music of Berio or Bussotti. In this recital she explores the most varied vocal territories: from traditional songs to Berio and to . . . The Beatles. In addition to compositions by Kurt Weill, William Walton, and herself. In this labyrinthine voice is a release for all vocals lovers.

HEAD & THE RED ELASTIC BAND, MICHAEL: Adios Senor Pussycat CD (VIO 025CD)
Michael Head (The Strands, Shack, The Pale Fountains) continues his Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band project with the beautiful and evocative Adiós Señor Pussycat, the first album of new material from Head since 2006. Recorded in his Head's hometown of Liverpool from March 2016 through June 2017, and the culmination of four years of hard work, Adiós Señor Pussycat is equal to Head's finest moments and further cements his reputation as one of his generation's greatest songwriters. Since beginning a self-imposed hiatus from music in 2008, Michael Head has been working with a fluid concept of an ever-rotating band to provide a flexible platform for the range of his live and recorded works. He unveiled Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band in 2013 with the Artorius Revisited EP, and followed this in 2015 with the Velvets In The Dark/Koala Bears 7". Fate, bad luck, and circumstance have often conspired to deny Head his rightful dues. A soulful and poetic genius, he has been loved and lauded by fellow artists and critics alike, after starting out in the early 1980s with The Pale Fountains, with whom he recorded a brace of acclaimed albums (Pacific Street (1984) and ...From Across The Kitchen Table (1985)). He subsequently formed Shack with his brother John and went on to record five albums over almost 20 years, including the much-loved and acclaimed Waterpistol (1995) and H.M.S. Fable (1999) (for which the NME hailed Head as "our greatest songwriter"), while 1997 saw the release of what is widely regarded as his classic work, The Magical World of The Strands (MEGAUK 024CD/LP). Adiós Señor Pussycat, produced by Steve Powell and Michael Head, features the following musicians: Michael Head, vocals and acoustic guitar; Steve Powell, electric and acoustic guitars; Phil Murphy, drums; Tom Powell, bass guitar; Nina, piano; Dan Rogers, electric guitar; Rod Skipp, cello; Dewi Tudor Jones, violin; Helen Tonge, viola; Martin Smith, trumpet; Andy Diagram, trumpet; Simon James, saxophone; Steve Powell, Joanne Head, Phil Murphy, and Mary McCombs, backing vocals; and Michael Head, Phil Murphy, and Karina Townsend, percussion.

GODARD + JEAN-PIERRE GORIN, JEAN-LUC: Five Films, 1968-1971 6xBLU-RAY (AA 010BR)
"After finishing his film Weekend in 1967, Jean-Luc Godard shifted gears to embark on engaging more directly with the radical political movements of the era, and thus create a new kind of film, or, as he eventually put it: 'new ideas distributed in a new way.' This new method in part involved collaborating with the precocious young critic and journalist, Jean-Pierre Gorin. Both as a two-person unit, and as part of the loose collective known as the Groupe Dziga Vertov (named after the early 20th-century Russian filmmaker and theoretician), Godard and Gorin would realize 'some political possibilities for the practice of cinema' and craft new frameworks for investigating the relationships between image and sound, spectator and subject, cinema and society. Included here are five films, all originally shot in 16mm celluloid, that serve as examples of Godard and Gorin's revolutionary project: Un film comme les autres (A Film Like Any Other) (1968); British Sounds aka See You at Mao (1969); Vent d'est (Wind from the East) (1970), Lotte in Italia/Luttes en Italie (Struggles in Italy) ( 1971), and Vladimir et Rosa (Vladimir and Rosa) (1971). High-definition digital transfer. High-definition Blu-ray (1080p) and standard-definition DVD presentations. Original uncompressed monaural audio. Optional English subtitles. A conversation with JLG: interview with Jean-Luc Godard from 2010 by Dominique Maillet and Pierre-Henri Gibert. 100-page full-colour book containing English translations for the first time of writing by, and interviews with, Godard and Gorin, and more. Total run time: 456 minutes."

BRAT, THE: Straight Outta East L.A. 2LP (ROC 3669LP)
"The Brat was a Chicano punk rock ensemble originating from the barrios of the East Los Angeles, California. Its three core members consisted of lead singer Teresa Covarrubias, lead guitarist Rudy Medina, and alternate lead & rhythm guitar player Sid Medina. From their conception in 1979 to their eventual break-up in 1985, The Brat contributed to the customization and intermeshing of multiple musical and cultural models that culminated in the distinct East Los Angeles, Chicano punk sound. The Brat, a hardworking and politically-conscious band, nurtured the Do-It-Yourself punk scene of East L.A., which was defined by unofficial venues and backyard shows because the wealthier West L.A. circuit controlled the popular market. By the time the famous Club Vex was founded in 1980 - by Los Illegals frontman Willie Herron, who desired an official venue to host East L.A.'s numerous underrated bands, who were mostly Chicano - The Brat had become one of the biggest acts in the area. In late 1980 The Brat was signed as the flagship band of the upstart label of another local punk group, The Plugz' Fatima Records. This collaboration resulted in The Brat's only recorded album, the EP Attitudes, a five-song collection of some of their popular originals featuring Covarrubias' aggressive, yet melodic, punk vocals critiquing social inequality and Rudy Medina's - who was called Rudy Brat - urgent guitar hooks over drums with a reggae feel. The Brat never found breakthrough success and remained an underground East L.A. Chicano act until breaking up in the late '80s. Contains all 5 tracks from the long 'out of print' Attitudes EP, the rest of the songs were performed and recorded during the few years The Brat were together but never released, Most of those recordings were unmixed or were left unfinished until members came back into the studio and finished the songs in recent years."

FRUSCIANTE, JOHN: Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt 2LP (SV 076LP)
"Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt is the first solo record by John Frusciante. Between 1990 and 1992 the guitarist made a series of 4-track recordings, which at the time were not intended for commercial release. After leaving the band Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992, Frusciante was encouraged by friends to release the material that he wrote in his spare time during the Blood Sugar Sex Magik sessions. Originally released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings label in 1994, Niandra LaDes is a mystifying work of tortured beauty. Frusciante plays various acoustic and electric guitars, experimenting with layers of vocals, piano and reverse tape effects. Channeling the ghosts of Syd Barrett and Skip Spence, his lyrics are at once utterly personal and willfully opaque. Frusciante's rapidfire, angular playing shows how key he was in the Chili Peppers' evolution away from their funk-rock roots. His cover of 'Big Takeover' perfectly deconstructs the Bad Brains original with laid-back tempo, twelve-string guitar and a fierce handle on melody. The album's second part -- thirteen untitled tracks that Frusciante defines as one complete piece, 'Usually Just A T-Shirt' -- contains several instrumentals featuring his signature guitar style. Sparse phrasing, delicate counterpoint and ethereal textures recall Neu/Harmonia's Michael Rother or The Durutti Column's Vini Reilly. On the front cover, Frusciante appears in 1920s drag -- a nod to Marcel Duchamp's alter-ego Rrose Sélavy -- which comes from Toni Oswald's film Desert in the Shape. This first-time vinyl release has been carefully remastered and approved by the artist. The double LP set is packaged with old style tip-on gatefold jacket and printed inner sleeves."
