PHEROMOANS, THE: I'm On Nights LP (ALT 024LP)

The Pheromoans present their fourth album, I'm On Nights, following 2012's Does This Guy Stack Up? (UTR 054CD/LP) and 2014's Hearts of Gold. A largely electronic affair, this ten-track LP -- recorded in Manor House, Northeast London -- refracts vocalist Russell Walker's stony poeticisms through a lens of analog synths while etching drum machine clicks and spaced-out keyboard ditties into the bigger picture. Guitars and bass still make an appearance -- helmed by Christian Butler, Alex Garran, and James Tranmer -- but they've mostly been eclipsed by the scrappy, artificial beats that now underline Walker's diary-like, ennui-soaked rhymes. Album opener "Wizard" -- with its blocky, "Bizarre Love Triangle"-esque intro and unnerving pins-and-needles crackle -- jolts the listener awake with charges of experimental noise. Then there's the plaintive synth pads on stripped-back tearjerker "ION" and the acid squelch of "Depressed Thunderbird." Because, with I'm On Nights, musical touchstones take on a myriad of cult guises, shifting from downbeat minimal wave to a hypothetical vision of Dan Treacy crooning caustically over "Mari" by Martin Rev. That's not forgetting, of course, the influence of an outlier crop of new wave-y post-punk bands including Datblygu and Young Marble Giants. And, as always, there's the requisite nod to all things DIY. Walker says he hope this direction will create some distance between the band and a certain demographic, characterizing the album as "an attempt to alienate further the other dads at the nursery gates who kept slapping my back firmly and saying 'nice work keeping our music alive compadre', and trying to graft their aviator shades onto my forehead and contorting my fingers into the devils headset." With titles like "Don't Spread It Round College" and "Brad's Crush," the bulk of the LP's lyrical content reaches back into Walker's 16-to-18-year-old psyche, as he explains: "It was at J. Sainsbury (Produce) in Uxbridge where I discovered the joy of working alone at night unimpeded and free to delve further into my hitherto unexplored imagination...!!" And it's this theme of (oft night-time) employment that cuts through ballpoint scribbles of Walker's quotidian missives. Hailing from the holy trinity of England's most southern locales -- London, Brighton, and Hertfordshire -- The Pheromoans consist of Russell Walker on vocals, Christian Butler on guitar and electronics, Alex Garran on bass and electronics, James Tranmer on guitar and electronics, Scott Reeves on drums and electronics, and Dan Bolger on keyboards.

MOTTE, NICO: Life Goes On If You Are Lucky LP (ATN 024LP)

After releasing a beautiful debut 12" in 2014 on Antinote, the man behind the visual identity of the Parisian imprint makes an impressive return to the label with Life Goes On If You Are Lucky. One can imagine the long nightly conversations held between Nico Motte and the machines that gave birth to this album, the man trying to learn the most secret sounds from his machines. The album opens with "Tema d'Amore," a song numbed with synthetic winds and celestial choirs that set a foggy atmosphere that encapsulates the whole album. The music on Life Goes On If You Are Lucky is all about building up toward extreme density and accumulating a tension that is only to be released during punctual epiphanies such as the eponymous track's beautiful break. In order to reach the essence of Nico Motte's music, one needs to go through the album many times, each time carefully peeling off layers of synths, under which is hidden the heart of each song. One can definitively feel that Life Goes On If You Are Lucky is an album composed by a man who has spent years loving and collecting obscure German electronic records, ambient, library, and Italian soundtracks. Nico Motte now blends elements from these different musical genres into his own music, while some more housey influences seem to loom over "I.C.A." and "La Figure de Rey" (which somehow recalls Larry Heard's Alien-era). Each song seems to be the result of a long session of orchestration by Nico Motte, composer, arranger, and conductor, who attributes to each electronic component a specific role to play in these seven little instrumental suites, disturbed from time to time by human elements -- a saxophone on "Tema d'Amore," the voice of Syracuse's Isabelle on "Tacotac" -- only to remind us that Life Goes On If You Are Lucky is above all about human fragility.

SOMBY, ANDE: Yoiking with the Winged Ones LP (ASH 11-2LP)

Yoiking with the Winged Ones is a vinyl record with yoiks yoiked by Ánde Somby and recorded and mixed by Chris Watson. Yoiking is the ancient chanting practice of the Sámi people, the indigenous inhabitants of the Arctic area of Sápmi, today encompassing the far north of Europe. Yoiking's origins date from time immemorial -- legend has it that it was the fairies and elves of the Arctic lands who gave yoiks to the Sámi. Yoiking was an important element of the religious rituals in pre-Christian times and has survived Christianity, imperialism, and the confiscation of Sámi areas by Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Russia. Ánde Somby is deeply rooted in the yoik tradition. He comes from the eastern part of the north Sámi areas, with connections to the tundra tradition of the reindeer herders and the valley tradition of arctic farmers. His yoiking is quite technical as well as melodic; Somby is at once a traditional and innovative yoiker, with an expressive style on the borders of the human voice. Here, all three pieces on side A are his compositions. The album's title refers to the migratory birds that travel to the Arctic for their breeding season and break the Arctic silence with their singing and calling, while also referring to the sound that flies from the echoing mountains. The project draws inspiration from the fairies and elves who gave the yoiks to humans, tying the yoiks to the earth, and from the ongoing war against those fairies and elves; this war was waged in Norway by 19th-century national poet Henrik Wergeland in the song "Nisser og Dverge," and has continued by stripping the earth of its soul and giving free license to aggressive exploitation. The album is also inspired by the Greek myth of Narcissus and Echo, in which Echo is rejected by Narcissus but gains an eternal voice; here, Echo yoiks along together with the underground energies of the ancient practice. Recorded by world-famous sound artist and field recordist Chris Watson in Kvalnes, Lofoten, Norway, in mid-June 2014, while the arctic winds rested for a moment. Post-production by Chris Watson. A K Dolven took the photos for the project and was instrumental in developing the concept. Artwork and design by Philip Marshall. Thanks also to Tony Myatt. BURGIO, SEBY: Bounce CD (AU 3008CD)

Can one describe everyday life in the third millennium through traditional jazz? That's what Sicily-born pianist Seby Burgio asks with Bounce, released as part of Auand Records' Piano Series. On his contemporary canvas, the 25-year old musician shows mainstream colors made of swing and bop. The result is a fresh, enjoyable music, grounded in the top-notch technique he achieved in his classical studies. The average day on Bounce starts with an invitation: "Follow Me." Burgio drives the listener on a frantic race through traffic, among countless accidents, detours, and quick leaps ahead. Then it's time for a cheerful "Coffee Break," with an infectious beat from Luca Bulgarelli (double bass) and Marco Valeri (drums). A daydream of a "Day Off" ensues, away from office deadlines and traffic jams; the calm of this track unleashes the trio's expressivity, making room for a dreamy, graceful mood surrounded by a soft interplay. Time's almost up, and there's just a quick moment for a playful provocation on "Brush the Cat," highlighting Burgio's sonic clarity and his bandmates' rhythmic precision. Past and present mirror effects dot this album -- with swing, Afro beats, and three-four time outlining the world of today. One can also catch a glimpse of a landscape in bright colors; "Etnia" sounds like a festive dance with origins that cannot be traced back. Of course, this experiment couldn't come without a tribute to some masters, including Thelonious Monk ("Bright Mississippi") and Italian vocal talent Gegè Telesforo, whom Burgio has joined on tour. The uplifting, contagious, and elegant funk beats in "Gege's Groove" echo Telesforo's unique style.

Benny Rodrigues aka ROD has had a strong relationship with the Dutch Balans label and its owner after releasing the label's fourth release in 2011. He opens this EP with "Float," evoking is a nostalgic voyage into the unknown as a traditional flute whistles a techno lullaby before "Lego" engages the listener with the sounds of watery blips scattered throughout. "3yr" is a mellow track that steadily climbs into a euphoric blend of dub-inspired chords to form an elegant composition. The composition of "Kloduba" cleverly corresponds with "3yr," as its gentle patterns gradually develop to harmonize together.

140-gram 12". Limited edition of 300. Manuel and Julian (Bedlam) experiment in different setups on the fringes of modernist techno. Here, kickless track "Nuck Charms" builds up tension for the peak-energy live cut "Delia's Dentist." "Steady on the Brake," however, plays with expectations and sets the focus on a sneaky synth line, sure to deliver dynamic energy early in a set. The expansive bassline and driving percussion of "Jetsun" precede the dramatic electro melodics of "Waldo's Moment." With the closing remix, close friend and label partner Sedus turns the quirky electronics of "Waldo's Moment" into a candid peak-time banger.

Eagle/Deer is Sara Barratt. She recorded Summer of Sepia over a three-year period in her early 20s. She says she enjoys singing but isn't so sure about all the hoopla that goes with it. There are a couple of short interviews available online, and there's talk of the occasional (undocumented) live performance -- but this is not some attempt to seed mystique. The songs do that nicely on their own. To try to get the pigeon in a hole, one might call Summer of Sepia "Massachusetts psych-soul -folk." Other listeners have offered up a range of references, mostly along the lines of "lost '70s classic."

BAUMANN/KOEK: Baumann/Koek LP (BB 217LP)

LP version. Baumann/Koek is another hitherto undiscovered treasure of German electronic music, the only album by the electronic music pairing of Wolfgang Baumann and Ata Koek, both from Kempten, Bavaria, Germany. It was mixed in Conny Plank's studio and distributed, without a label, by the duo themselves in 1978. The music owes much to the Berlin School; layered sequencer patterns, swirling chord tapestries, a computer beat here and there. Eastern elements or hints thereof add a particular charm to Baumann/Koek, reissued here for the first time. Rumors persist that Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream is behind the Baumann/Koek project. But in actual fact, Baumann/Koek can unequivocally be identified as Wolfgang Baumann (no, not the MPS Records cover artist), born in Kempten in 1950, and his friend Ata Koek (Köktürk, to be precise), born in Istanbul in 1956. In their mid-20s, the pair made the trip from Kempten to Bonn with the singular aim of visiting the legendary Synthesizerstudio Bonn, the very same store where Kraftwerk and countless other electronic icons went shopping for their equipment. They purchased a secondhand ARP 2600, began experimenting, and realized that they needed more gear. Before long they had added an ARP sequencer, a Solina String keyboard, and an EKO Compurhythm drum computer to their arsenal. Last but not least, they acquired a four-track recorder and were ready to commit their music to tape, before going to the expense of booking Conny Plank's studio for the mix. They pressed up 1000 LPs and paid the production costs themselves. The album was well-received and the Swabian wholesaler Jaguar Records stepped in for worldwide distribution, but unfortunately went bankrupt shortly afterward. Baumann and Koek were disinclined to take on any further financial risk and decided against a follow-up record. The music clearly references the Berlin School, with a hypnotic maelstrom of sequencer patterns and swirling tapestries of mostly minor chords, underpinned at times by a computer beat. What really sets the music apart from comparable productions is the subtle influence of Arabian tonality, which saw Koek consciously introduce just a hint of Eastern flavor. If Baumann and Koek considered their "modest" equipment to be a hindrance, their music sounded all the better for it. There is a raw, unpolished quality to the tracks, a clarity that draws the listener closer, far more so than the bombastic productions of contemporaries like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, et al.

Swiss producers Rare Movement and Disco Channel debut with Numbers. After cutting their teeth on the DJ circuit for many years and playing alongside artists including Seth Troxler, Ricardo Villalobos, Jamie Jones, and Luciano, they've crafted a pair of tracks that would fit perfectly in those performers' DJ sets. "Rare 007" combines tension-building synths, a wandering bassline, and a solid drum groove for a most useful club tool. "Rare 011" digs deeper with cinematic strings over a sparse, bass-heavy kick drum. Vocal flashes and micro-percussion fly in and out as the track's melodic elements blossom. TROUM: Acouasme CD (CSR 213CD)

Following their much-praised 2015 collaboration with raison d'être (De Aeris In Sublunaria Influxu) and the 2013 conclusion of the Power Romantic trilogy (Mare Morphosis), Acouasme sees Troum heading in a completely different direction, creating a harsher and more industrial-sounding album as a contrast to their previous releases. But through their trademark Troumatic machining, the final result doesn't sound at all like standard harsh noise -- it's rather industrial noise as if filtered through a feverish dream, through a deranged perception. The six long tracks of pestering transrational drones on Acouasme sound like an aural psychiatric symptom, a humming hallucination leaving stable reality.

COLOSSLOTH: Outstretch Your Hand for the Impress of Truth CD (CSR 214CD)

From the wild hedgerows and deep dark rivers of the English Midlands, Leicestershire's Colossloth makes psychogeographic maladies and invocations to warm the heart of the discerning and intrepid psychonaut. Phonic seeds planted in blackened soil fertilized by visceral imagination. A fugitive ambience for those seeking solace in the unexpected, alternating between the brooding and abrasive and the transcendental and enchanted. Having supported the likes of Tim Hecker and Wrangler, Colossloth's music nods to a multitude of genres, from industrial to ethnic to caustic electronica. Its spirit can be found crucified between the anode and cathode of occult circuitry, transmitting across modern England whispered messages from the lips of the old gods of Albion. Romanian trio Premiesku (Livio, Roby, George G) follow releases on labels like 2020 Vision and Vakant with the Altitude EP. The title-track is seven minutes of irresistible electronic funk, with jostling drums and odd synth sounds. "Bucur" is a more peak-time-oriented techno cut with forceful kicks, alien sounds, and snatched vocal parts, fluid and free-flowing. "Neo" goes for a more minimal aesthetic with slick, rubbery drums and heavenly female vocals before spiritual melodies explode above the groove. The hypnotic "Permut" is a dubby roller with a fat bottom-end that's impossible to ignore and classic techno synths.

London-based Harry Wolfman and Manchester-based Loz Goddard follow their respective Dirt Crew debuts on 2015's Deep Love 15 (DIRT 091EP) with the Square Lane EP. "Uncle Buck" is a no-questions-asked dancefloor-weapon and a testament to the pair's ability to bring together the finest samples, synths, and live percussive. "Problem Child" gets a bit sleazier, with vocal cuts, swirling keys, and a broken beat throw-down break. Brame & Hamo turn in a funked-out remix of "Uncle Buck," enlisting Brame's brother on live bass. The blissed-out, melodic "Neck of the Woods" coasts along with sunny energy and just the right amount of cowbell.

Chang Fo Ji are small, plastic, battery-powered soundboxes, available throughout China and Tibet, that play a variety of Buddhist loops, from poppy modern Chinese Buddhist prayers to ancient recordings of famous Tibetan Buddhist masters. They can be taken everywhere, offering the listener portable immersion into the hypnotizing, minimalist world of Buddhist prayers. Both sides of this record contain various loops from various Chang Fo Ji gathered in China by Laurent Jeanneau (Kink Gong) between 2006 and 2011, with some pressed as locked grooves. COOPER, MIKE: New Kiribati LP (CREP 021LP)

First vinyl release of Kiribati, the first installment in the acclaimed Ambient Exotica Soundscapes series by veteran English experimentalist Mike Cooper. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500. "This was the first release on my Hipshot c.d.r label in 1999. I wanted to create an album of imaginary soundscapes from imagined exotic places based on my travels in the Pacific Islands and South East Asia. Kiribati was the first in a series of three CDs of Ambient Exotica Soundscapes -- played on lap steel, electronics, prepared guitar, sampler, live environmental recordings (from Bali, Malaysia, Australia and Italy) and acoustic and electronic percussion. (The other two are Globe Notes and my award winning Rayon Hula.) Kiribati was (and is) dedicated to the people and islands of Kiribati because they were slowly sinking into the Pacific Ocean. Although the palm trees are often 25 metres high, the islands themselves, made from gravel and sand, are only 4 or 5 metres above sea level and a rise in sea levels of just 15 centimetres, as has happened over the past 100 years due to global warming, is a disaster. Necro Deathmort live up to their clever moniker, laying down six tracks of trademark seismic doomstep and utterly bleak noisedronemetal with EP3, a regression to their earliest days when the style pundits at Vice wrote, "one minute it's Squarepusher, the next it's Sunn O)))." This is some dark occult shit, a fact reflected in the artwork, which shows an almost naked girl holding a goat's skull, her face dripping with blood. There may be runes behind her, but one can't quite make them out, what with all the darkness. The record opens with "Sedan," a face-melting mixture of a-ha intensity and ferocious Kraftwerk-esque vocals. How can a robot sound so pissed off and utterly misanthropic? Only NDM know. "Holy Prism" follows; it's like the soundtrack to some sci-fi horror shit. Then "Quandary" kicks in and the listener is left fighting for breath as the pummeling beats offer no respite, repeatedly landing blows to the face with their tiny drumfists. "The Regency" does little to soothe the listener's shattered nerves, sounding like a bulldozer pushing a planet into the biggest three-bar electric fire you've ever seen. "Sparks" follows and pushes the darkness to 11, sounding like "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock played by a church mouse in a Cylon helmet. The album concludes with "Tundra," which is, without hyperbole, the most bleak and harrowing music ever put on vinyl by any human. Some people may say the band has run out of ideas, which is utterly preposterous -- to make this record they used totally different keyboard presets and used extensive Lovecraft references, something never done before by a band anywhere, ever. This release forgoes the usual two-color splatter vinyl, instead taking the form of BLACK vinyl. For fans of: cool electronic shit, random occult imagery, tight jeans, trends, fashion.

2016 repress. Bernard Herrmann wrote the bulk of the score for Vertigo (1958), considered by many critics and by Herrmann himself to be his finest film score, in a little over a month. Hitchcock places Herrmann's background music in direct opposition to music that is played deliberately as part of the action of the film. While Herrmann's score represents the forces of destiny and the mysterious dream world inhabited by Madeleine, music that Midge plays on her radio and record player represents her world and the norms and strictures of conventional society. Herrmann scored the swirling harps and strings that imbue most of the pivotal action sequences in the film to mirror the vertigo that dogs the protagonist. Essential.

WILEN, BARNEY: Un Temoin dans la Ville LP (DOC 126LP)

Having already played on a film soundtrack with Miles Davis for Louis Malle's 1958 crime film Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator to the Gallows), saxophonist Barney Wilen -- still barely in his 20s -- got the opportunity to compose the score for another French film that used jazz as a background, Un témoin dans la ville (1959). Judging by the present album, the result is most convincing; one couldn't hope for a better marriage, so perfect is the way the music suits the image and vice versa. The soundtrack is coupled on the B-side with the more freely jazzy 1958 studio album Jazz sur Seine, which teams Wilen with three-fourths of the original Modern Jazz Quartet (with Milt Jackson on piano only, of all things, Percy Heath on bass, and drummer Kenny Clarke), plus the Latin percussion of Gana M'Bow. Wilen gets more of a chance to stretch out and reveal his swinging, warm tenor tone; Jackson is quite competent as an accompanist and in fairly fluent, right-handed bop flurries.

Fumio Hayasaka first worked with Akira Kurosawa in 1948 when he composed the score for Drunken Angel. Many hold the partnership of Hayasaka and Kurosawa in the same esteem as that of Nino Rota and Federico Fellini; an incomparable team, with the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Hayasaka scored seven of Kurosawa's best films and died while scoring his eighth. Seven Samurai (1954) was his last complete Kurosawa score. Limited edition first press of 500 copies on white vinyl.

Repressed; LP version. Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays Scientist's varied approach, but also clocks in as one of his best outings. Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other wobbly interjections from the mixing board. The record's expert evocation of the Halloween spirit also includes some fiendishly-voiced intros, the cover art's cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th. Along with Keith Hudson's Pick a Dub (1974) and Lee Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub (1973), this is one of the essential dub albums.

This 1982 album includes the priceless dub of Johnny Osbourne's classic "Give a Little Love," as well as further cuts of the likes of Hugh Mundell and Wayne Jarrett. Scientist is always in control. Its ten tracks evolve around a melancholic melodic framework, and while there is clearly a nod to Detroit and another to dub-techno, the overall impression is consistently and unmistakably of Mikkel Metal himself. Echo to Echo is the artist's magnum opus, taking on epic proportions in its album-length narrative. Prins Thomas's Full Pupp family plays hosts to Magnus's infectious disco arrangements, as it has done since Magnus International and Danny "Blackbelt" Anderson first worked together as Kalle, Magnus & Daniel in the mid-2000s. Tracing a line from those early days through his first solo work (the 2006 Kosmetisk 12"), Echo to Echo sees the producer combining the foundation of his sound with influences including Warp's early catalog, transposing it into the singular voice that is Magnus International. Perhaps best known for his work alongside Donato Dozzy in creating the much sought-after Aquaplano records at the tail-end of the 2000s, Nuel has been just as consistent and impressive on his solo outings. Whether taking on metallic electro or syrupy, bass-heavy ambience, Nuel's attention to detail and his keen ear for a groove have made each release something to treasure. Nuel's only previous full-length, Trance Mutation (Further Records, 2011), is a masterpiece of minimal repetition. While initial impressions might suggest little in the way of continuity between Trance Mutation and the colder, more mechanical sounds of Hyperboreal, Nuel's ability to go deep into a particular mood -- a particular sound -- links the two. Recorded using just one semi-modular synth -- the boutique and sadly discontinued Ekdahl Polygamist -- and a handful of pedals, Hyperboreal came together in just a few days while Fogliata was staying with Giuseppe Tillieci (aka Neel, famed mastering engineer and one-half of Voices from the Lake) at Tillieci's apartment in Rome. Hyperboreal begins ambiguously, with the fluttering dissonance and shadowy aggression of "Steppin' Stone" immediately setting the mood. The opener's flutters become a swirling mass on "Polaris" and a venomous rattle on the title-track, before "-Om" evens out the maddening, almost frantic pulsations into a bed of twitching feedback and resonant echoes. There's even a hint of a regular beat, barely audible beneath the buzzing tones of synthesized electricity. "Intensity plays a fundamental role in what I do," says Fogliata, and listening to the opening half of Hyperboreal, one would have to agree. These are not casual sonics. Penultimate track "Be Well" lifts the shadows somewhat, and though closer "The Rest Is Noise" seems to return to a darker place, it does so with the memory of sunlight, warmth, and life. As its title suggests, this is an album for colder climates; for stark, inhospitable landscapes. At first, it seems a truly unsettling void of vaporous tones; a blizzard of sound refusing to coalesce and refusing to make sense. Slowly, though, Hyperboreal opens itself up, emerging patiently from an abyssal darkness into a beauty as still, as sharp, and as breathtaking as an Arctic dawn. This is the incredible story of Uther Pendragon, a lost psychedelic band from San Francisco whose music has remained buried until now. Formed in the Bay Area in 1966 as a teen garage group called Blue Fever, Uther Pendragon lasted from 1966 until 1978. During that time, the band went through different names and phases, as their music evolved from garage to psychedelia to hard rock, but the core of the band always remained the same: Mark Lightcap (rhythm guitar, vocals), Bruce Marelich (lead guitar, vocals), and Martin Espinosa (bass, vocals). After finding their ultimate drummer in Mike Beers, the group finally settled on the Uther Pendragon name in the early '70s. But despite being active for all that time and recording at numerous studios (including their own in Palo Alto), Uther Pendragon never released any recordings. Their complex and fascinating story, which involves winning a Bay Area Battle of the Bands and playing with Country Joe & The Fish, recording a killer garage-psych 7" acetate in 1967, going to the legendary Pacific Recording Studios in 1969 to record a demo, living as a family in the same house for many years and rehearsing seven days a week, building their own recording studio and music corporation, being managed by Craig Pedersen (Something Wild, Tripsichord Music Box), being involved in an occult-themed rock opera called Sabbat, and much more, is told with all the details by Mike Stax from Ugly Things in this set's extensive liner notes, with rare photos. The locally celebrated and award-winning singer-songwriter's third solo album is a wonderful mix of heartfelt lyrics, crisp and modern pop production, and Bellens's signature vocals, which never fail to captivate. As a household name in his native Denmark, Bellens is no stranger to releasing albums and playing live. He has released many albums with his own bands (including Murder and I Got You on Tape), turned in guest performances for other artists, and played close to 500 shows. Polyester Skin came to life in close collaboration with acclaimed Danish producer and DJ Kasper Bjørke, and follows many collaborative endeavors between Bellens and Bjørke; Bellens has often featured on Bjørke's work, including "Young Again" from Standing on Top of Utopia (HFN 004CD, 2010) and "Lose Yourself to Jenny" from Fool (HFN 014CD/LP, 2012). While Polyester Skin's overall sonic impression is electronic, the album also boasts an impressive lineup of guest musicians including Tomas Høffding aka Bon Homme (WhoMadeWho), Jakob Høyer (The Raveonettes, Trentemøller, Darkness Falls), and Nils Gröndahl (Under Byen, Efterklang, Pinkunoizu). Opener "Tidal Wave" sets the mood with open, airy production backing Bellens's voice. The beats and synths have, as Bellens puts it, "some kind of Vangelis/Chariots of Fire thing going on" that's tough to resist. One of Jacob Bellens's distinctive features is the almost Damon Albarn-esque musical diversity of his output. The heavy groove, synth strings, and especially the vocal rhythm of "Behind the Barricades" reveal Bellens's long-held fascination with rap, while "Raining Parachutes" has a Caribbean feel to it, a musical style at which Bellens's earlier work has also hinted. Polyester Skin features quite a few tracks with shuffling grooves and synths that pay homage to a certain flavor of '80s pop, including the up-tempo "Ace of Spades" and the beautiful ballad "Untouchable." But don't let the seemingly lightweight synth-ingredients and crisp drum machines deceive you; a lyrical abundance of existential depth and intimate melancholy is omnipresent throughout Polyester Skin, alongside its groovy, catchy pop songs, including "Back to You" and "Polyester Skin." Jacob Bellens's third solo album is a playful and modern take on the artistic virtues that have made him into one of the most celebrated artists on Denmark's independent scene.
