TOURE, AMARA: 1973-1980 CD (AACD 078CD)
"Latin music, is it really foreign to us Africans? I don't think so. Listen to the drums, to the rhythm. It all seems very close to us -- it feels like it's our own culture" --Amara Touré. In late-'50s Dakar, Senegal, producer Ibra Kassé and his Miami nightclub spearheaded a movement blending the Cuban styles of son montuno and patchanga with local folk traditions. Through the unique cultural fusion of West African and Caribbean influences, Latin music took on a new and unique sound, brought a breath of fresh air into Dakar's nightlife, and attracted numerous musicians from surrounding countries. One of the musicians who answered this call was percussionist and singer Amara Touré, from Guinea-Conakry. In 1958, Kassé invited Touré to join Le Star Band de Dakar, led by Mady Konaté, a group that was immensely important for the development of Senegalese modern music. Touré's talent on percussion was undeniable, but it was his raw, powerful voice and his interpretations of Cuban music that captivated the producer. In 1968, after ten years with the Star Band, Touré headed to Cameroon and formed the Black and White ensemble, with which he performed live through the late '60s and early '70s and released three singles between 1973 and 1976. These singles, included as the first six songs on this compilation, fully epitomize and distill the essence of what Touré had learned during his career. His Mandingue roots fused with the Senegalese sound that he had mastered -- the perfect foundation for his Cuban interpretations. In 1980 Touré went to Libreville, Gabon, to team up with the powerful Orchestre Massako, with which he recorded Accompagné Par L'Orchestre Massako. This LP has since gained a reputation as one of the very best African albums, and its complete contents are included here as the compilation's last four tracks. These ten treasures, representing Touré's complete discography, have been carefully remastered from original session tapes and vinyl records, and are reissued here for the first time. After the release of his LP in 1980, Touré seems to have disappeared. Apparently he was last seen in Cameroon but his whereabouts are unknown at the time of this release. His music, however, is undeniably alive.

MAMITORI ULITHI EMPRESS YONAGUNI SAN: 25/12/2013 LP (BRD 014LP)
In keeping with the freer releases in their catalog (Sky Needle, La Ligne Claire, Minitel), Bruit Direct Disques presents 25/12/2013, a live album by Japanese group 真美鳥Ulithi Empress Yonaguni San, often referred to by their nickname, Mamitori. Savagely DIY and autonomous, Mamitori have released only a handful of copies of a privately pressed record, while lead guitarist Aritomo has put out an abundance of self-produced acid-folk records, hand-assembling sleeves for every copy. David Keenan compared the band's 2012 album 一二三 Fairy Tail Chimidoro Phenomenon Satan Inferno Dress Ha Cattlemurarete Yggdrasill ハWa Sasaru to "Isn't Anything being creepy-crawled by Idiot O'Clock or the early Rough Trade singles as curated by Jutok Kaneko and Reiko Kudo." The six tracks offered here (drawn from that 2012 album) were recorded in public and are reproduced accurately, with silences and tuning included at the express request of the band. Guitars are skinned alive, twisted in counterpoint, or played with a cheesegrater; the frail vocal is as exhausted as it is sweet; the trumpet plays its dying breath; the bouncy rhythm section offers a skeleton of rigor; psych-rock is reduced here to fluff, with only a scraggy trunk of the spinal column remaining. Mamitori follows the traces of the ancestral giants of '70s avant-rock (Hendrix, Velvets, Captain Beefheart, Henry Cow, Can, The Red Krayola), except it's an odd post-punk mess that spits from their amps. Accident is king with Mamitori, and their psychotic free rock, loaded with open-tuned guitars, sometimes feels like shreds of sound; limping and out of phase, played obliquely, their music is at once absolutely diaphanous and indecipherable. Nothing is ever in place and everything cracks up and frays; it's an atonal construction that threatens to become melodious at any minute. Ultimately, Mamitori hides a form of twee pop unwittingly battered by no wave, every chord of which could be a blank bullet. One might mistake the sound for My Bloody Valentine violently colliding with The Shaggs, The Pastels attacked by Mars, or Pere Ubu holding paws with Swell Maps. Is a "No Tokyo" emerging decades after No New York? This live set, in front of a ghost-like public, serves as a hint of this Japanese band's profound peculiarity, joyfully perplexing everyone even further by citing alternative j-rock supertars L'Arc-en-Ciel as an influence. Mamitori will have you humming songs you hadn't noticed were there.

Part 1 of 3 LP versions. Tracks by: Phantom Band, Günter Schickert, Faust, Ougenweide, Riechmann, Asmus Tietchens, 39 Clocks, Der Plan, You, Sølyst, and Moebius Plank Neumeier. Bureau B sees itself as a platform for exciting varieties of electronic, free-spirited music, ranging from pop to avant-garde. The label has amassed an impressive catalog of reissues and new productions, including electronic music classics from the 1970s and early 1980s popularly classified as krautrock (Cluster, Roedelius, Moebius, Plank, Schnitzler), alongside new recordings by such formative artists as Faust, Kreidler, Roedelius, Tietchens, and Moebius, to name just a few. To provide an overview of the various musical styles in which Bureau B specializes, the label has created the Kollektion series. Kollektion 04 is curated by Richard Fearless, who listened his way through the label's entire (!) archive and now presents his own very personal selection from the catalog. Richard Fearless is best known as the leader and founder of British band Death in Vegas. German electronic music can be heard as an influence on many of his albums; indeed, even in his song titles, like "Sons of Rother." Richard Fearless has worked with Iggy Pop, Bobby Gillespie, Paul Weller, Liam Gallagher, and Hope Sandoval and has developed into a successful producer and remixer. "To me the bands and labels in the Bureau B archive, current and past, were looking to distant lands, their own 'Neuland,' whether in the future with bands like You and Riechmann, or from a more remote past, like medieval folk band Ougenweide. They were creating something radical and experimental, something that didn't draw on the same rhythm and blues, Anglo-American rock that was saturating the airwaves at the time. They were pioneers in every sense of the word. With all due respect for the music that forged these paths, it was on hearing the mental guitar on Faust's 'Herbstimmung' that I knew to look not only at the so-called golden years of this era, but to look at what these artists were doing later, as well as the new bands that were emerging from those schools.

DEETRON: The Believer EP 12" (CHARACTER 003EP)
Deetron presents the third installment on his Character label, melding the aesthetics of rave, the drive of techno, and the swing of house. "The Believer" is a direct homage to the classic sound of Detroit and Chicago, a tuff jam full of swing, clout, and hard groove. Fluctuating melodic noise sits between staunch, punchy beats before hollowed-out bass timbres pulse in polyrhythmic directions. Deetron teams up with Sebastian Kramer on "Dexterity," pitching up the tempo and stepping back from the bounce and major tonal chord hooks of the title-track for a Berghain-suited minimal romp with unnerving basslines and synth arpeggios.

Rebekah follows her CLR debut, the 2013 Cycles EP (CLR 067EP), with Distant, veering toward the deeper side of her repertoire, with analog synths and sequencers. On "Distant," she opts for a more broken beat and uses a vast palette to create a forward-moving soundscape that opens up with darker pads. "Distant Memory" shapes sounds from "Distant" into a down-tempo, slightly experimental piece that's also warm and inviting. "Synchronicity" is a full-on techno groove workout, featuring Rebekah's signature kicks with an elegance that complements the "Distant" pieces. Sterac's remix of "Distant" is a groovy exploration; modern techno at its best.

SOL: Where Suns Come to Die CD (CSR 186CD)
Where Suns Come to Die is an exploration of growing older; the disappointment that follows and the omnipresent dissociation from the world and life as such. In a mixture of sampled classical songs from the beginning of the 20th century and recorded instruments such as reed organ, horns, and strings, the music reflects on nostalgia and a feeling of disconnection from the modern world. Holding on to what last shreds of beauty still linger, Where Suns Come to Die is a reminder that we all must offer ourselves to the soil. Features Thomas Bøjden of Die Weisse Rose on vocals.

TUNNELS OF AH: Thus Avici CD (CSR 206CD)
"Firstly, the punishment is meted out day and night, kalpa after kalpa, without a moment's interruption or relief. Thus Avici." Thus Avici is the second album from Tunnels of Āh, led by Stephen Āh Burroughs (Head of David). The title references "the sutra of bodhisattva Ksitigarbha's fundamental vows," a section that Burroughs reads daily in homage to Ksitigarbha, to whom Burroughs pledged "entreaty and supplication" under solemn tantric oath in 1995. Tantric Buddhism, Christian mysticism, and personal magick make up the subject matter for Thus Avici. While traces of 2013's Lost Corridors (CSR 184CD) can be heard, Thus Avici is a harder, more focused offering. Shards of distorted noise, ritual drums, caustic drones, and haunted vocals make Thus Avici a dark, hallucinatory swoon into the hinterland of the Tunnels of Āh. The dull blue light of brute-world calls.

MORRICONE, ENNIO: Cosa avete fatto a Solange? LP (RED 215LP)
One of Ennio Morricone's greatest giallo scores was composed for Massimo Dallamano's 1972 film Cosa avete fatto a Solange? (What Have You Done to Solange?). This complex soundtrack features moody instrumentals, unusual rhythms, and sharp horns, and it includes some surprisingly playful pieces of music as well. This score is one of Morricone's most experimental and it's also one of his darkest, which makes it nicely complementary to Dallamano's deeply disturbing film. MOGGI AKA PIERO UMILIANI: Omaggio ad Einstein LP (RED 303LP)
Omaggio ad Einstein has a special place among the many albums of electronic music composed by Piero Umiliani. In this homage to the German physicist, Umiliani subverts the rules of space and time in music and creates an album with 23 compositions, all of them less than two minutes long, instead of following the traditional 7-10 tracks usually present in an LP. This is an original and experimental album, with a peculiar and epic catchiness, tied to Piero Umiliani's masterful use of synthesizers and great experience in the field of soundtracks. The themes of Omaggio ad Einstein take us to sidereal spaces, wandering across the universe with their clear sounds and wonderfully creative titles ("The Celestial Vault," "Nuclear Valkyries," "Galactic Abyss"...). This is the first reissue of this album, which was originally released in 1976 by Umiliani's Omicron label.

ARCHETTI, LUIGI: Null IV-VII 4CD BOX (ZEITC 018-19CD)
Epic in scale, static, timbre, and stillness, Null is a vast and profound musical project that Luigi Archetti has been pursuing over a long period. His musical research is not about "null" (the German word for "zero") as a mathematical object, as a real number. Instead, the term "null" is used here as a metaphor to describe a state of pausing and anticipatory waiting. The music of Null is characterized by static sounds, drones, and their overlapping and layering. The sound surfaces turn into acoustic "sluggish material" which flows slowly through time and gradually transforms itself. It is a constant gliding, a constant mutation of sound structures. Attempts to discover clearly defined melodies, rhythmically ordered structures, or even beats are to no avail. A universe of sound particles diffuses in the foreground of the musical atmosphere, whereby the sounds do not provide any reference whatsoever to a possible location. All the sounds in Null are sourced from e-guitars, which are in part extensively defamiliarized through digitalization and thereby redefined. The e-guitars (frequently in scordatura tuning) are used to this end as suppliers of sound. The acoustic sedimentation of the diverse sounds and sound structures results in a dense and filigreed sound fabric which develops a pull-effect on the listeners. It is an invitation to travel in uncharted regions, a hypnotically captivating journey through timeless and minimal acoustic events. Null IV-VII, presented as two double-CD sets in an outer box, and follows Null (ZEITC 003CD, 2010) and Null II/Null III (ZEITC 009CD, 2012). All seven CDs are available in a special CD slipcase box as Null I-VII (ZEITC 3-9-18-19).

PYRAMIDS, THE: Otherworldly 2LP (DB 159LP)
2015 repress. Gatefold double LP version on 180 gram vinyl. Founded 40 years ago in 1972, The Pyramids release their first album in over 35 years. They released three albums before splitting up in 1977 -- albums that made them one of the most mysterious and legendary of all the spiritual cosmic jazz collectives of the early '70s. There was a highly energetic reunion in 2007, boosting their trademark sound of massive Afro-centric drums and percussion meeting ecstatic group improvisations. The Pyramids' extensive European tours in 2010/2011 turned out to be a great triumph: mesmerizing audiences at various clubs and festivals all over Europe with a new sound and a new band configuration featuring founding members Idris Ackamoor and Kimathi Asante, original member Bradie Speller, and special guest artists Kenneth Nash and Kash Killion. The collective received rave reviews and standing ovations in every city they played in. They also blew Gilles Peterson's mind at Worldwide Festival and the Worldwide Awards, where The Pyramids' spiritual and musical leader, Idris Ackamoor was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In summer 2011, The Pyramids were recording tracks for a new double album (the first since 1976) at the studio of Krautrock legends Faust in South Germany. The new album contains 14 never-before-released tracks. The Pyramids' signature sound is still percussion-driven -- no surprise with Nash and Speller being two of the most masterful percussionists on the planet. Another signature style of The Pyramids is the "two bass" concept, combining Kash Killion's acoustic bass with electric bass by Thomas "Kimathi Asante" Williams. Idris Ackamoor plays his alto sax in an absolutely astonishing way, sometimes simultaneously performing tap dance to create percussive rhythms, suggesting a "post-be-bop Prince" as The New York Times called him. The Pyramids trip out into unexplored territory of spontaneous improvisation, sometimes trancing like off to an outer/inner-space journey. The Pyramids were world music even before the term was coined back in the early '70s. They use a battery of ethnic instruments such as mbira, calypso boxes, Russian zither, West African bolong, Egyptian sensemia harp, pygmy whistle, etc., using them in a manner quite otherworldly.

PYRAMIDS, THE: Birth/Speed/Merging LP (DB 165LP)
2015 repress. On 180 gram vinyl. Birth/Speed/Merging, originally released in 1976, represents the San Francisco Bay Area era of the band. Relocating from Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1974, The Pyramids quickly met other musicians in the thriving San Francisco Bay Area music scene. "The Pyramids, a criminally under-recognised spiritual jazz collective, were birthed at the dawn of the 1970s in Ohio, and included saxophonist Idris Ackamoor, flautist Margo Simmons, bassist Kimathi Asante and drummer Donald Robinson. Delving deep into a world of pan-African rhythms and melodies, they combined them in novel ways with the psychedelic modal jazz simmering in America at the time. The group released three private-press records in the US throughout the 70s, highly regarded by collectors, which consistently fetched incredibly large sums of money." -- savagesaints.blogspot.com

SENIOR ALLSTARS, THE: Dub from Jamdown - Darker Than Blue Conducted By The Senior Allstars LP+CD (EB 107LP)
LP version; includes CD. Limited to 500 copies. "We were inspired by that brilliant release Darker Than Blue: Soul From Jamdown (2001) (on Blood & Fire from Manchester in cooperation with PK in London) and felt compelled to perform this beautiful gem in a dub version..." In spring 2014, when The Senior Allstars were asked by the Hamburg-based dub label Echo Beach to record their interpretation of an existing release, everyone involved assumed that the results would be good. What absolutely no one expected was that the album would be so incredibly bursting with fresh ideas. Dub from Jamdown is based on the compilation Darker Than Blue: Soul from Jamdown, a collection of reggaefied versions of classic soul tracks, featuring the Jamaican vernacular and pop style, that was enthusiastically lauded by both the press and reggae fans. There was no question -- it was a product of the zeitgeist; old soul hymns treated to a reggae makeover that instilled a new veracity in the originals. Unfortunately, the series was never continued. More than ten years later, in 2014, the mind behind the Echo Beach label, Nicolai Beverungen, had a vision of taking the next -- the third -- step along this path. "From the beginning it was clear to me that I wanted an instrumental band to do the job, and the venerable Senior Allstars, the leading lights in their class, were my top pick," says Beverungen. The band moved into the studio in summer 2014 for a few days. The results are more than breathtaking; the songs drip from the speaker membranes like honey, bringing in the sun, warmth, and happiness, very much in keeping with the original songs -- although the lyrics may have been written with other things in mind. The dub remake presented by The Senior Allstars breaks all previous dimensions and conventions set by the history and spirit of this legendary album. The quartet creates an original, collective, improvised, and organic live dub that is in the tradition of the original songs and with new versions that fully deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the originals.

Speedy J and Lucy as Zeitgeber turn in a polar rework of the album's eerie, soothing closer, "The Surface of Last Scattering." Sleeparchive and O/H (the union of David Foster of Huren and Teste and Orphx's Richard Oddie) both plump for "Power Spectrum," one of AnD's typical sledgehammer works.

EPM Music follows Shaker/Ritual by Robert Hood/Floorplan (EPM 010EP, 2015), with an EP featuring two other legendary figures of electronic music. Sonic Mind's D-Knox delivers two tracks with Metamorphic's Dan Curtin on remix duties. "Out There," with its rotational, stippled groove, and "Speak So They Listen," with its funked-up stomp, are pure electronic delights, bearing all the hallmarks of D-Knox's musical journey and sonic expertise. Dan Curtin's remix of "Out There" is a perfect complement to Knox's original; Curtin's signature style shines through with a tough drum line and sweeping touches.

BURKETT, JOSHUA: Gold Cosmos LP (FTR 196LP)
"This is the third album recorded by Joshua Burkett. The first, Owl Leaves Rustling, was returned to life by Spirit of Orr. Its CDR follow-up, Life Less Lost, was recently retrieved by Golden Lab. Now it is time for Gold Cosmos to once again bask in the sun. Initially released in 2001, Gold Cosmos (a title I always thought sounded like a Robbie Basho bootleg) featured performances by people like Dredd Foole, Matt Valentine, Ben Chasny, Teri Morris, PG Six, Chris Corsano, and Noah Wall, which was the world's first real evidence that Burkett was not operating entirely in a vacuum. Prior to this Joshua's work seemed quite hermetic, although those few who knew of his recorded legacy would tell you otherwise. The album still sounds amazing and revelatory today. The music proudly wears the fingerprints of a vast array of outsider artists from around the globe who created their own weird universes in the guise of 'folk music' -- from Dave Bixby to Dana Westover, Perry Leopold, Ed Askew (with whom he collaborated), and various other freaks. These impulses were run through deep knowledge of UK 'acid folk' (ISB, COB, and onward) and you end up with a brilliant and unique alloy. This is the kind of deep knowledge you only acquire by haunting record stores for a long time, but Burkett never falls prey to checklist-thinking or doing the obvious. His creations are fully his own and they wail in the softest way imaginable. Prepare for a real trip" --Byron Coley, 2015. Limited edition of 500.

S S S S: Autopoiesis LP (HG 1502LP)
Following the successful 2014 tape debut, Administration of Fear, Samuel Savenberg presents the first vinyl release from his highly acclaimed industrial/electronic project S S S S. It immediately becomes clear to the listener that this is no light fare; a distorted beat mercilessly shatters layered vocal samples at tenacious intervals. The term Autopoiesis is not to be understood in the vein of Luhmann's systems theory, but refers instead to its biological meaning -- the sheer self-preservation of life. Found-footage vocal samples of despaired souls and manically impelling beats bear witness to several forms of the struggle to preserve life. Passages of claustrophobic ambience are too urgent and erratic to give the listener any respite, though the epilogue, "Identität III," seems almost conciliatory in its far-reaching expanse. S S S S performs his unique form of industrial music in clubs from Milan to Berlin and Moscow. Fans of Throbbing Gristle, SPK, or Haus Arafna can put their minds at ease; another generation of uncompromising artist is here. Recorded December 2014 and January 2015. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

DAVIS, MILES: Fillmore West 15-10-70 2LP (HH 001LP)
1970 was a turning point for Miles Davis, and it proved to be the most consistently intriguing year of his decades-long career. Davis had previously performed exclusively in jazz clubs and festivals, and Dave Holland, when he arrived from England in 1968, noted that he was "shocked at how few people were coming to Miles's concerts." But by the beginning of 1970, in conjunction with the April release of Bitches Brew, Davis began appearing at rock venues, sharing the bill with established rockers like Steve Miller, Grateful Dead, and Neil Young and often playing to audiences of thousands. His appearance at Bill Graham's Fillmore West on October 15, 1970, highlights the transitional phase in Davis's career, with his septet following a relatively consistent set list in order to provide a cross-section of his repertoire to a young and relatively unfamiliar audience. In hindsight, this was an important move, and an acknowledgement of the reality that this was the demographic Davis would need to capture if he were to remain both fresh and relevant. This performance was rapturously applauded by a fresh audience, fully endorsing Davis's profound ability. Hi Hat presents the complete KPFA-FM radio broadcast of this performance, a tribute to the iconic jazz musician that portrays the depth and diversity at work at such a vitally important point in his career. Played by Miles Davis: trumpet; Gary Bartz: soprano and alto saxophones; Keith Jarrett: electric piano and organ; Michael Henderson: bass; Jack DeJohnette: drums; Airto Moreira: percussion; and Juma Santos: percussion. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Includes insert with analytical liner notes and photos. Remastered sound.

VA: Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa 2LP (HJR 052LP)
2015 repress; 2LP version, housed in a radiant full-color gatefold sleeve. An astounding compilation of the breakneck Shangaan dance output of the Nozinja studio in Soweto (an urban area of the city of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa), recorded between 2006 and 2009. From his small home studio in Soweto, Nozinja (aka Dog) sells more than 50,000 records a year (DVD, cassettes, CDs) -- without iTunes, without digital distribution. This is hyper‐local music, all of it still considered traditional, all of it marketed through Shangaan radio and newspapers to a relatively small set of people who live between Johannesburg, Limpopo and Mozambique. Besides Dog himself -- or rather Zinja, Dog's performance name -- his label roster includes BBC, Tiyiselani Vomaseve, and Dog's famed mask‐wearing, clown‐dancing group, Tshetsha Boys. Dog often goes to the dances to scout for new talent. That's where he found Tiyiselani Vomaseve, two sisters who perform together as one of the most popular Shangaan traditional groups in South Africa...the real test comes every Sunday in Soweto. Groups like Tiyiselani Vomaseve and BBC compete regularly for the crowd's favor. "You must be prepared to see the fastest dance ever," Dog declares. The dances are wild, with films of them attracting more than half a million hits on YouTube. Shangaan disco ran at 110 BPM. Dog's music is around 180 and it's getting faster. Yet the lyrics seem to run counter to this rapidity. They read like African soap operas, tied up with domestic matters and a yearning for the slower life. This is country music. There's something distinctive in this Shangaan perspective: they are one of the more rural and traditional groups in the wealthiest African nation, yet "tradition" to them can also be living, electronic and nuanced. Just as Dog samples American phrases in his songs, his videos cut in shots of white joggers on a spring day, a foggy lakeshore reminiscent of Wisconsin, even a corporate office space -- mundane yet exotic images which become intriguing takes on the modern South African dream. Instead of African music becoming Americanized and re‐framed for the global market, Dog's productions do the opposite. American phrases and foreign images become samples in his collage, in his traditional context. This album is the first release of its kind outside South Africa. Here is Dog's music as‐is.

FOAT GROUP, THE GREG: The Dancers at the Edge of Time CD (JMAN 083CD)
This major release from The Greg Foat Group sees the celebrated jazz quintet making the most of the acoustics of an ancient church, accompanied by a full ensemble of supporting musicians. The fourth album from the celebrated jazz combo will further delight Foat fans who have been consistently enthralled by the taste and finesse with which they execute their beguiling arrangements and instrumentation. During England's long, hot summer of 2014, a couple of tons of vintage studio gear were bundled into an ancient church on the charming and picturesque village of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. There the centuries-old church organ was the centerpiece and the Group was accompanied by a string quartet and woodwinds to create a musical style like no other. The resulting hauntingly sublime sounds need not only fill vaulted chapel ceilings, but our hearts and ears as well. Recorded across three of the hottest days in that summer, direct to one-inch tape, with all the rich, live analog sound and the hallowed magnificence that church acoustics can bring, The Dancers at the Edge of Time features the classic Foat Group with guesting local musicians and friends, and celebrates the summertime and beach ambience of living on the island. Pressed on 140-gram vinyl; includes CD. The decade from 1968 to 1978 had a pivotal importance in Italy's 20th-century history. It was a period of deep social and cultural transformation on the wings of the Berkeley youth protests and the May 1968 protests in France, which then developed in different directions due to the moral contradictions of one of the most conspiratorial countries of the western world. Years of high-tension events -- beginning with the tragic massacre of Piazza Fontana and ending with the infamous kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro -- were reflected in every aspect of society and culture. A palpable tension could be felt both sonically and visually. The soundtrack of this whole world was written in real time by a bunch of enterprising composers, right in the middle of a session for some magical Italian soundtrack or even an appearance alongside the RAI Orchestra (owned by Italy's national broadcasting company), who made little money while recording some instant albums for the most sought-after publishers of libraries. Sonic pictures of the heyday of Italian society, truly distinct from the music made by French, English, or German composers in their respective countries. The sound coming from the Italian television was as sharp as a razor blade and tasted just like lead and tear gas, with howling fuzz guitar and heavy drums to set the tumultuous scene of a society on the verge of implosion. Daniela Casa, Remigio Ducros, Alessandro Alessandroni, Stelvio Cipriani, Enzo Scoppa, Amedeo Tommasi, Franco Tamponi, and the other composers acted as drastic audio reporters as well as incredible musicians. They were able to describe in just few minutes the climax that surrounded them, using their classical heritage and training with hints of the avant-garde, along with the boost of psych-rock, jazz, funk, and whatever other popular musical innovation came their way. Urged to be minimalistic and not so original -- the quintessence of the library dictum -- the Italian composers answered instead with an experimental vocation pushed by that same need for renewal, stimulating the entire nation in those crazy and marvelous years. Released alongside Criminale Vol. 4 - Violenza! (PNY 4511LP). Two male vocal sides, topped with Billy Williams's "Pied Piper," a pretty up-tempo sound by popcorn standards, but undeniably full of character and easy charm. Much the same could be said of "Too Much Rosita" from Nick Todd (interestingly enough the younger brother of Pat Boone), a swinging little number very much in the Belgian mold.

FANTASY: Beyond the Beyond Plus... CD (PT 8042CD)
Formed in Gravesend, Kent, in 1970, this quintet debuted in 1973 with Paint a Picture (AU 5001CD/LP), one of the most sought-after and prized relics of British prog rock. Beyond the Beyond is their follow-up, recorded in 1974 but sadly not released at the time. It makes its long-awaited return to CD here, together with background notes and images, and confirms what an imaginative and atmospheric outfit they were.

9.30: Fly CD (PT 8043CD)
The sole album by this quintet from Cheltenham, England, came and went in May 1972. Fronted by husband-and-wife duo Michael and Barbara Wainwright, they played a deft blend of prog, folk-rock, and singer-songwriter material, but failed to connect with an audience at the time. The original LP has sold for over $500, and makes its long-overdue return to CD here, complete with background notes and rare images.

Between them they'd played in Skip Bifferty, The Greatest Show On Earth, Forever More, and several other well-regarded acts, and their pedigree shines through on this set, now making its long-overdue CD debut together with background notes and images.

SHIT AND SHINE: Jealous of Shit and Shine LP (REPOSE 046LP)
Long overdue vinyl release of Shit and Shine's second album, Jealous of Shit and Shine' originally released by Riot Season on CD only in 2006. Back when Shit and Shine were just a mere two-piece with a wicked sense of humor and a lawnmower, Jealous of Shit and Shine came out and knocked folks bandy. The original CD didn't last long and was never repressed, and since then Craig Clouse has been badgering Riot Season to give it a vinyl release. So here it is, in (almost) all of its original fucked-up glory. The audio has been tweaked a little to make it more vinyl-friendly by the man himself in his Texas bunker, but it's still a completely messed-up brain-fuck of an album. The kind only two men and a lawnmower can make. Split into two parts, side A is the live favorite "Practicing to Be a Doctor," almost 24 minutes of pounding tribal drums and a ridiculously addictive bassline that just rolls on and on... if you never saw them do this live with anything up to 30 drummers you missed out big-time. Maybe they'll bust it out again one day. Side B features the more wacky/noise/avant-garde side of Shit and Shine. Chaotic, distorted blasts; mesmeric chuntering; tortured guitars and drums disguised as seven tracks. Absolutely fucking delightful, and absolutely like nobody else out there. 100% Shit and Shine. It's no wonder folks were jealous. NME listed Jealous of Shit and Shine at #89 in their "100 Lost Albums You Need to Know" feature, for which Jeremy Pritchard of Everything Everything wrote, " I love Jealous of Shit and Shine the same way I love everything they do; the utter wretchedness coupled with humour; the surprising depth of what could seem initially like a one-dimensional sound; the cast iron but utterly uncontrived 'absolutely-don't-give-a-fuck-about-what-you-think-ness' that it exudes. Although it sounds really abrasive, some song titles and the artwork spell out their playful streak pretty clearly." Summed up well. Neon pink LP housed in PVC sleeve sealed with sticker. Includes download code. Limited edition of 300. One-off pressing; no repress.

Roman Flügel takes the original bassline and shortens the loop to 3/4 time, accompanied by the whip of a big hi-hat and wild 909 claps. Frank Wiedemann's "Orchestra Remix" is an enormous ensemble of rich strings and delicate melodies, building and swelling from start to finish.

BEDOUIN (UNITED ARAB EMIRATES):
TIJN, J.: MOR 12" (BDN 005EP)
"This release captures kicks, rhythms, and snares -- only to drag them kicking and screaming into a metallic underworld. In J. Tijn's echo-sphere, there are only allusions to the status quo of sound and beats, and never a full-fledged embrace of the conventional. On Side A's 'Kanon V.I.P.' a grizzly digital war is left to play out between both kick and snare, with grainy battle lines drawn around upbeat and downbeat. Survivors of the conflict are rewarded with a groove reminiscent of grime, if only the genre had been reborn in a dystopian future. Side B opens with a roughneck beat on 'MOR' before turning its hand into a fist and effectively destroying its own image. The groove lives through this barrage of sound, but as a heavy and dark undercurrent just strong enough to remind you where J. Tijn's roots are. 'Shy' lures you in with a rounded electro kick, before glutting the rhythm and ushering in a wall of sound. A snowstorm of screaming drum samples proceed to surround you: you may have been here before, but you are somewhere rhythmically unseen. Embedded in all of these tracks are perhaps a sign of the times: the things that used to be seen as normal have now changed and mutated."

VA: Brand New Wayo 2LP (CRZR 1001LP)
2015 repress. Subtitled: Funk, Fast Times and Nigerian Boogie Badness 1979-1983. "With this release, Comb & Razor Sound launches its exploration of the colorful world of popular music from Nigeria, starting with the post-disco era of the late 1970s and early 80s. The years between 1979 and 1983 were Nigeria's Second Republic, when democracy finally returned after twenty-three years of uninterrupted military dictatorship. They were also the crest of Nigeria's oil boom, when surging oil prices made the petroleum-producing country a land of plenty, prosperity and profligacy. The influx of petrodollars meant an expansion in industry and the music industry in particular. Record companies upgraded their technology and cranked out a staggering volume of output to an audience hungry for music to celebrate the country's prospective rise as global power of the future. While it was a boom time for a wide variety of popular music styles, the predominant commercial sound was a post-afro beat, slickly modern dance groove that retrofitted the relentless four-on-thefloor bass beat of disco to a more laidback, upbeat-and-downbeat soul shuffle, mixing in jazz-funk, synthesizer pop and afro feeling. At the time, it was still mostly locally referred to as 'disco,' but has since been recognized as its own unique genre retrospectively dubbed 'Nigerian boogie.' A Brand New Wayo: Funk, Fast Times and Nigerian Boogie Badness collects 15 pulsing Nigerian boogie tracks in a lovingly compiled package chronicling one of the most progressive and creative eras in the history of African popular music." BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS: Sex and Violence 2LP (GET 51308LP)
"Boogie Down Productions was one of the most important hip-hop crews of the 1980s and '90s, and are rightfully revered by both fans and scholars. First exploding out of the South Bronx in 1986, the group created an amazing mix of raw power and hyper-intelligence, and gave the world multiple classics throughout the late '80s, under the BPD moniker, even after losing DJ and chief producer Scott LaRock to gun violence in 1987. For reasons unknown, the group's early 1990s output -- which also includes Live Hardcore Worldwide and Edutainment -- lost some luster in the eyes and ears of fans. But this wasn't KRS-One's fault. The legendary MC never faltered in bringing true intelligence and a forward-thinking stance to the rap world, even as derivative gangsta rap took over the music scene on the whole, in the wake of N.W.A.. 1992's Sex & Violence, the last album made under the Boogie Down Productions name, is a perfect example of an underrated classic, and fans will appreciate it getting new shine here, to correct its lukewarm reception upon its initial release. Produced by KRS-One and Pal Joey, the album explores the darkest sides of the American urban landscape and psyche, with KRS as narrator, detailing all sides of the matrix. Back on vinyl and ready for another (or, for some, first) listen, fans of old-school-done-right classics have no excuse this time around."

CLIPSE: Lord Willin' 7x7" Box (GET 56029)
"This limited edition issue of Lord Willin' features seven 'big hole' 7"s on white vinyl covering all 13 tracks in the original album sequence, plus a bonus remix of 'Grindin'.' The vinyl is housed in a plastic case featuring the original album art and each 7" is housed in a mini Star Trak die-cut jacket -- replicas of the label's original 12" sleeves. The first hip-hop group signed to The Neptunes' newly formed Star Trak label in the early 2000s was a Virginia based duo known as The Clipse. The group's first single 'Grindin',' impacted young people with its bare-boned but infectious drum beat in the same way that Run-DMC's 'Sucker MCs' did almost two decades earlier. MCs Pusha T and Malice, combined with The Neptunes' groundbreaking production, sent a clear message to the rap world -- 'we are not the same' (as rapped by Malice on his opening verse on 'Cot' Dam'). Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo were able to combine their electro-punk production with just the right group to create a street masterpiece. Following in the footsteps of such rap criminologists as Kool G Rap, Nas, Jay-Z and Mobb Deep, the Clipse offer a hustler's viewpoint, with clever, hard-hitting lyrics that are consistent throughout the album."

KROG, KARIN: Don't Just Sing - An Anthology: 1963-1999 CD (LITA 129CD)
"Newly remastered audio. Includes rare archive photos and liner notes Q&A with Krog. The work of Karin Krog may be unfamiliar to much of the world, but in her native Norway and Scandinavia at large, she's practically a household name. This says much about the local enthusiasm for post-bop jazz but also about the tyranny of distribution: until 1994, Krog's albums weren't available in the USA or UK, meaning three decades of recordings were waiting to be discovered. With this anthology of her best recordings from 1963 to 1999 -- curated with Krog's own input -- we hope to set the record straight. To listen to opening track 'As a Wife Has a Cow' is to jump into the deep end. It's 54 seconds of words, voice, and technology, a looped, echoing reading of a Gertrude Stein poem. The effect is disquieting and alien but deeply rhythmic, too -- and that's Krog's USP. Don't Just Sing takes in these spoken experiments along with free jazz, improvisation, standards, contemporary covers, and electronic manipulation. It features some of the best regarded jazz players in Europe, not least her partner, John Surman, the English saxophonist/multi- instrumentalist and composer. Krog began singing jazz in the 1950s and started her first band in 1962. She not only had two tracks on the first ever Norwegian jazz LP, Metropol Jazz, but also became the first Norwegian jazz artist to record and release a full album (1964's By Myself on the Philips label). Her sound developed as technological advances made new recording techniques possible, and she quickly embraced the album as the perfect form to contain her sonic experiments. 'There is such a thing as too much manipulation,' says Krog today. Recorded with tenor saxophonist Jan Garbarek and bass player Arild Andersen, 1968's Joy is regarded as her masterwork. Tracks from it can be found on this compilation, as can a couple of interesting covers: Joni Mitchell's 'All I Want' and Bobby Gentry's 'Ode to Billy Joe,' both of which show how Krog brought jazz aesthetics to pop songs of the day. 'I remember that there was a lot of buzz around Blue, and Joni Mitchell is, as everybody knows, a very talented singer and songwriter,' says Krog in the new liner notes."

VA: Iná Hudba: Experimental Studio Bratislava Series 1 LP+CD (4MG 007LP)
A milestone; an incredible historical recording never before issued in any format. This is the first release of the work of Slovak composers who were active in the '60s and '70s, a missing link in the history of musique concrète. The first in a series of three released in celebration of the 2015 50th anniversary of the Experimental Studio Bratislava, Slovakia. "In 1965 the Experimental Studio Bratislava was founded by the Czechoslovak broadcast service... Composers like Peter Kolman, Jozef Malovec etc. started on a 'do it yourself' level and built the equipment which was then not available through the Iron Curtain themselves. However, the studio's vicinity to Budapest eventually made it easier for the Slovaks to source the equipment they needed as Hungary had a more free interpretation of the socialist marketsystem. The artists were thus able to make improvements that allowed them to experiment with Musique Concrète and electronic sounds... Interestingly Exs had, for various reasons, never released a record in their own name in spite of vivid exchange with likeminded artists in European studios like the Electronic Studio Stockholm (EMS), founded the same year, 1965, Budapest, Warsaw etc. Recordings made in Exs appeared for example on Hungaroton SLPX-11851: Hungarian Electronic Music; Supraphon SUA 10951: Electronic Music; Supraphone 1111423: From Czech Electronic Music Studios; CBS-S3461144: Musique Tchecoslovaque Nouvelle just to mention a few. We therefore feel it is overdue and more than appropriate to let the increasingly interested world of analog electronic music aficionados know about the hidden gems of vintage electronic sounds and Musique Concrète created behind the iron curtain two generations ago. This is our first release -- Experimental Studio Bratislava, Series 1 - 2 - 3 -- in a small series of 3 with unreleased master tracks from Slovak composers recorded in the Exs between 1965 and 2005. The next releases will be out in about 6 months and 12 months, respectively. Each release consists of one vinyl LP with a CD included -- while on the vinyl some of the tracks will be shortened, the same tracks on the CD will always be in full original length" --Peter Doggwiler, producer. "Late in 2011 Hans-Joachim Roedelius and I agreed to embark upon an album project together... I assembled my first Eurorack modular synth... a basic single voice system with rudimentary sequencing. I had no experience whatsoever working in this way... my subliminal knew it would recognise the music I was reaching for, but my knowledge of electronic engineering was insufficient to proceed with any confidence... I studied and experimented with a new technique or concept. I recorded everything. The system grew. I found ways to create what I would call music using these new methods -- to create points of departure for Roedelius. Three years later, it is clear that my submissions were still very much the work of a student... But is this a bad thing? Are the student's works necessarily inferior to the master's? Learning is often exciting, inspiring. Is knowing ever that much fun? Selected Studies Vol. 1 (BB 124CD/LP) was released early in 2013... A few months later, our record company Bureau B asked me what I planned to do with the unused submissions (both Joachim and I had submitted maybe 400% more than was ultimately used). Might I release some of them as a solo project? But they are not finished, I said... I have been recording songs for long enough, now, to be able to admit freely that some of my demo recordings are indeed superior to the final versions. But this was a different concept being proposed. I had deliberately left space for counterpart, harmony, whatever... could such space, such absence actually benefit the piece?... We agreed to work towards an album of what I have come to call 'slight pieces'. The result is called 1D. Some pieces were originally created with overdubs by another in mind. Some were simply experiments. One or two may have had loftier ambitions... None of the pieces involves the use of a piano keyboard or a computer, except to record it. Some modulations were executed by hand. Most were generated by programmed sequencers and logic. Each piece is a self contained electronic circuit... I made rudimentary edits, the difficult stuff was done by Jonas Foerster in Berlin. The artwork for the album is by Chris Hughes. Chris began sending me examples of his art of his around the same time I began sending him examples of the work which it seems to me it so naturally compliments."

MOEBIUS PLANK NEUMEIER: Remixed by Richard Fearless 12" (BB 208EP)
Zero Set (BB 037CD/LP) was a milestone in latter-day krautrock, created in 1983 by a hugely authoritative triumvirate of the German avant-garde: Dieter Moebius, Conny Plank, and Mani Neumeier. Richard Fearless delivers two remixes of outstanding album opener "Speed Display." On the A-side he grafts rhythmic patterns onto a four-to-the-floor beat and compelling bass signature. Feedback, echoing voices, a sprinkling of synth -- only the most essential elements, none of which risks overloading the mix. On the B-side, he plucks just a few notes from the bassline and crafts a fine slice of hypnotic electro-dub with minor chord echoes.

RUH AND TINI, DANA: Cocoon Ibiza 2CD (CORMIX 050CD)
Ibiza is known for a special, unique vibe; an atmosphere full of deep emotions mixed with wild energy, salty air, and hot summer nights. All led by mastermind Sven Väth, who started out on the island with his vision in 2000, and made it come true year by year. Looking back at 15 editions of his mix-CD series The Sound of the -- Season, it becomes clear that these mixes are acoustic documents for contemporary witnesses, the recorded soundtracks of life on the island for all these great and unforgettable summer seasons. Väth also called the right artists and friends to his side to help him with the project; artists who identify with the concept of love and music -- love for the music and of course music full of love -- merged with a large portion of hedonism and artistic energy to create the perfect setting to celebrate countless sunrises. This mix features two artists who know how to reflect this special Ibiza feeling: Dana Ruh and tINI. They both hit the nail on the head with their selections; their mixes are super deep and almost soulful and feature artists like Persuader, Nina Soul, Third Wave Trax, and Aruba (in tINI's mix), and Osunlade, DJ Pierre remixed by Ricardo Villalobos, Agnès, and Move D & DJ Jus-Ed (in Dana Ruh's mix) -- just to name a few. Two amazing mixes that create a unique emotional atmosphere. This is the sound for sunsets and sunrises, for all those hot evenings and the beach on the day after. Two musical postcards that could only come from Ibiza. Turn the music on, forget the gray sky of the big cities around the world and beam yourself into the vibe of the magic island. Also includes tracks by Daniel Stefanik, LoShea, Funk E, Guido Schneider & André Galluzzi remixed by ToFu Productions, Niro remixed by Fred P, Szare remixed by Ryan Elliott, Mr. G, Amir Alexander presents Richie Ratchet, Company Is Family remixed by Spencer Parker, Dana Ruh, Nicuri, Alex & Digby, Alci, Daniela la Luz, Fosky, TC Studio, Glance, Anthea, Arktapes, Mariano Mateljan, and Kamran Sadeghi.

REMAIN IN SILENCE: Lonesome Hours - The Monument & Seven Rooms Recordings LP (DEADWAX 002LP)
2013 release. It was the last days of 1983 when Andreas Buchwald (guitars) and Andreas Gimpel (vocals) founded Remain in Silence. With a distinctive lead voice and melodically haunting guitar tunes layered over heavy basslines and straight drums, they soon established their characteristic sound -- deeply melancholic, sonorous, and powerful. An inescapable emotional density permeates their songs. Early comparisons to the likes of Joy Division and The Cure soon became void as Remain in Silence carefully developed their individual musical language. Apart from an omnipresent dark, coldwave mood, even songwriters like Leonard Cohen can be seen as influences, and an absorbing interpretation of Dylan's "Ballad of Hollis Brown" is still occasionally part of their live set. In April 1985, Remain in Silence released their first album, Seven Rooms, as a C-60 cassette. Housed in a monolith-like black box, it featured a studio side and a live side. Their mini-album follow-up, Monument, also a cassette-only release, consolidated their reputation as a cult band and widened their audience, leading Germany's alternative cassette charts at the time. Upon its release in December 1985, Spex magazine stated, "Monument is absolutely worth the name. RIS is how New Order should actually sound." Classic tracks like the moving "Hope in Fear," the claustrophobic "Hero," and the sad but powerful "Lonesome Hours" have lost nothing of their elemental force, pulling down and lifting up at the same time. With the 1987 release of their third recorded output, the classic This Is the Place Where Resistance Got Lost LP, Remain in Silence's breakthrough seemed to be only a matter of time. But the financial demise of their record label and the permanent replacement of band members brought their career to a premature halt. Nevertheless, Buchwald and Gimpel continued making music as Remain in Silence. They supported Siouxsie & The Banshees in 1995 and are working on material for another album at the time of this release. Without a doubt, Remain in Silence are the true German coldwave pioneers. Lonesome Hours - The Monument & Seven Rooms Recordings offers the perfect introduction to this unique band through their first recorded material, presenting the first vinyl release of the studio side of Seven Rooms and the entirety of Monument. Carefully remastered by Nicolás Zúñiga from the original ¼" reel master tapes. Housed in heavy matte-finish sleeve with printed inner sleeve and two inserts. Hand-numbered edition of 200.

BOYS SAY GO: Easy to Move LP (DEADWAX 006LP)
Boys Say Go morphed out of a garage punk band called Slow Children. In the early '80s, they had put out a 7" that featured a string synth they'd found in the studio. While sitting in Boston's Logan Airport in 1981, waiting for a plane to Germany, Anthony Rauseo and Joseph Fagan heard Depeche Mode for the first time, on Rauseo's Walkman. They immediately knew that the record they were bringing to a label in Berlin was already over, done, obsolete. So that year they started cranking out simple synthpop tunes with primitive analog equipment and no keyboard ability whatsoever. The result of the following five years' work was a fantastic array of new wave songs, of which only six were released. "Berliner Kindl Wesse" was inspired by driving around Germany in an orange VW Bug; Fagan thought the track was what they should have been listening to. This instrumental, along with "Nu Song," "Rain in the Dark," and "Sorry," were recorded but never released. Their first vinyl release, the Joey and Maria/Love Is Dangerous 7", appeared in 1983. Cheap drum machine, plastic Casio keyboard... Dave Stempko played everything on it but the bass. Self-produced, recorded at Pyramid Studio by Larry Lessard, and released on Boys Say Go's own Gender Records in an edition of 300, this minimal synth masterpiece has since become impossible to find. Later that year they recorded "Bang Bang de Boogie (Then We Dance)" at Newbury Sound, but the song remained unreleased. They recorded "Easy to Move" at Joe Harvard's So-So-Sound Studios in 1984, with Rauseo on the lead vocal and toy synth drums. The track was included on Harvard's 1985 Buy American! compilation cassette, but only a handful of copies were given to friends -- the track was barely released at all. Later in 1984, "Do You Wanna Funk" and "Serious Cat" were featured on Gender Records' Hit the Floor compilation, which was followed by the Humanity/Holy War 12" single in 1985. These last two songs feature backing vocals by Hank Fay, who was on loan to Boys Say Go from another synth band called Minks. And that was it. Fortunately, these recordings have been well-preserved by Mr. Fagan, and they're presented here for all lovers of new wave and minimal synth to enjoy. Housed in heavy matte-finish sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Hand-numbered edition of 200.

MARCIE'S STILL WAITING: From East to West LP (DEADWAX 007LP)
Marcie's Still Waiting was created as a studio-only project by Rainer Spachmann and Rainer Winschermann at the latter's Mollycat studio in Velbert-Langenberg, Germany, in 1984. Minimalist synthwave: some really upbeat tunes here; some moody, dark, cold songs there. All with the appropriate amount of guitar and a touch of lovely saxophone. The two Rainers would both write and perform the songs with the occasional help of Frank Maakaron (formerly Behnke) at the keyboards and Thomas Döbber playing some bass guitar. Anne Weber and Nicole Klank contributed their heavenly voices on a couple of tracks. They self-released the four songs they recorded in 1985 as A Mysterious Song, which was distributed by Wishbone Records. Alan Bangs, from the Nachtrock radio program on Westdeutscher Rundfunk, would play the record almost daily. The number of fans rose immediately and soon one could hear "A Mysterious Song" at many clubs around Europe. A second batch of the EP was subsequently distributed by Roof Music with different cover art. Spachmann and Winschermann wrote and performed seven songs in 1985 and early 1986; they were never released, and later in 1986 Spachmann moved forward on his own, writing and recording four more songs at the Muuß studio in Kiel, this time with the help of Thomas Hartung on bass and M.A. Mozart on saxophone. Anne Weber joined again as well, co-writing one of the songs. These four were released as the Mirrors and Daydream EP on Roof Records, and shortly thereafter Marcie's Still Waiting vanished from the face of the earth. They never played live and there are no known pictures of them as a band, but what a legacy they left behind. Their timeless music is far from forgotten; it sounds just as fresh as if it were written this morning. Their two vinyl releases are highly sought-after and quite expensive; it's high time for the material to be made available again. From East to West includes the complete contents of A Mysterious Song and Mirrors and Daydream plus four previously unreleased tracks. Housed in heavy matte-finish sleeve with printed inner sleeve. FARBLOS: ...Und der Regen Fällt LP (DEADWAX 008LP)
The creation of the song "Winterherz" ("Winter Heart") over the course of several years had never been intended as more than a pastime activity for F. Karnstein. But when he uploaded the track to the internet in January 2010, it received a lot of positive feedback and Karnstein's creative focus shifted toward the sort of music he is most fond of as a listener. He officially formed the one-man project Diurnal Masque, then began working under the name Farblos (the German word for "colorless"). Mr. Karnstein writes music that is a mixture of dark coldwave and goth synthpop, perhaps best described as new wave revival. It incorporates a wide range of inspirations and influences, from Joy Division via Psyche to Einstürzende Neubauten. With his heavy use of synthesizers and bass guitar, his music is rather easily identifiable as a product of his love for '80s and early-'90s new wave and goth music. Through 2011 and 2012, he attracted increasing media attention from online radio stations and press. Three of Karnstein's demo recordings were aired by Mick Mercer on his show, two of them included on At Sea Compilations' digital compilations, and a third on one of Gothic Magazine's Gothic Compilation CDs. Finally, on December 2nd, 2012, Farblos published a digital EP containing five demos that he'd produced, recorded, and mixed himself. In the summer of 2013, the recording for his yet-unnamed debut album began. "Never Too Late" was the first track to be professionally recorded, and it was featured on the digital-only Stairways: Twist the Past compilation. This is the first physical release of Farblos's 2012 digital EP plus the previously unheard demo version of "Never Too Late." Remastered for vinyl by Nicolás Zúñiga. Plays at 45 RPM. Housed in heavy matte-finish sleeve with insert. Edition of 200.

After his contribution to Dial's 2015 15-year anniversary compilation All (DIAL 032CD) and almost two years of production, here is DJ Richard's debut album, Grind. Scientist was only 20 years old when, working with fellow producer "Junjo" Lawes, he came up with this 1980 stunner, a sinuous groove party with cartoonlike special effects (a lot of bongs and boings like pans hitting one another, blips and squeals that sound like a Pac-Man game). All the "song" titles are references to boxing (a motif that Scientist was obviously mining for all it was worth), and all are great individual bits of dub sound that cohere into a meaningful whole. Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays Scientist's varied approach, but also clocks in as one of his best outings. Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other wobbly interjections from the mixing board. The record's expert evocation of the Halloween spirit also includes some fiendishly-voiced intros, the cover art's cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th. Along with Keith Hudson's Pick a Dub (1974) and Lee Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub (1973), this is one of the essential dub albums.

Scientist's name can be found all over any dub record collection; he was a protégé of King Tubby, and many would say that when dub fell on quieter times it was Scientist who breathed new life into it. BALDELLI, DANIELE: Cosmic Drag 2LP (EF 067RP-LP)
Repress in generic sleeve. Legendary DJ, remixer, and producer Daniele Baldelli presents Cosmic Drag, more than just a heartfelt twisted dance album. During his long residency at Cosmic, the nightclub by Lake Garda in Italy, Baldelli mixed funky disco, electronic, synthpop, reggae, fusion, rock, funk, Brazilian, African folk, Indian melodies, batucada, and jazz, and became famous for his eclectic meltdowns in which he might drop Ravel's Boléro overlapping with a Djola track or an experimental piece by Steve Reich mixed together with a Malinke chant from New Guinea. His worldly, hypnotic sets brought together the sounds of Kraftwerk, Fela Kuti, the Sky Records catalog, Killing Joke, Incredible Bongo Band, ZAZA, Chris & Cosey, Antena, Azymuth, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and Yellowman, all often played at improper speeds and mixed with effects and drum machines. This practice gave birth to the cosmic sound, a highly influential musical movement that set itself apart from the Italo-disco scene. Since then Baldelli's record bag has stayed eclectic and he still plays scintillating sets all over the world. The CD version of Cosmic Drag contains all four tracks from Baldelli's 2014 Cosmic Drag EP (EF 063EP), plus eight more stimulating, hypnotic, trend-setting tunes. Each track spreads deepness with diversified melodies, chords, and rhythms. One can feel Baldelli's vast musical roots in the electro vibes and the techno-driven grooves. Sometimes the funk hits hard, while in the next moment the listener is blown away by futuristic soundscapes. All of these arrangements have in common a cosmic dust that melds a playful sense with high-flying synth-lines and outer-space tones. A truly weird, mesmerizing album that stays appealing while experimenting profoundly. Baldelli describes the album's inspiration: "Most of my ideas emerge while travelling by train, driving my car to a club where I will perform, and foremost when I devote myself to listen to my large vinyl collection." It's a statement that explains why his tracks often build a bridge between careless, funky '70s vibes, offish '80s coolness, and the freedom of '90s rave culture, while landing fresh and unafraid in the present and carrying the listener away into spheres where the self is forgotten among irresistible rhythms and melodies.

DEUTSCHMANN, OLIVER: Resist 12" (ETB 022EP)
Berlin-based DJ Oliver Deutschmann returns to Etruria Beat following his remix of Dast's "Architect" (ETB 018EP, 2014). Get ready to blow up some dance floors with these hard-hitting monsters. Etruria cofounder Luca Agnelli's muscular, stomping remix of "Resist" precedes the original, a funky, driving techno stomper with house chords and a hypnotic voice saying "resist" at 132 BPM. "Hope" delivers a melody in the best Detroit tradition and powerful 808 drums. French techno stalwart Electric Rescue morphs "Hope" into a powerful loopy journey; synth hellfire at its best. MELANIE O'DUBHSHLAINE: Deformed Vowels LP (ROWF 062LP)
Melanie O'Dubhshlaine is a Leeds-based synthetic noise merchant (formerly performing under the Ocelocelot moniker). An obtuse musical fantasist, M O'D is a purveyor of heavy space-chord amalgamations, drum pad improv, and the human voice synthesized into abstraction and stripped of communicative utilitarianism. Always great live, this supporting pillar of the Ashtray Navigations empire stands independent, peaceful like a heron, as the brown river unremittingly carries pillagers' debris downstream to some godforsaken industrial necropolis, long ago taken hostage by Japanese knotweed.

MARIE ET LES GARCONS: Marie et les Garçons LP (FBK 001LP)
Originally released by Ze Records in 1980, the sole album by Marie et les Garçons is not really what one might call an album. It collects tracks from two singles from 1977 and 1978, live recordings from 1977, and modernist songs that the band recorded in 1979 in New York. It took only three years for the band to switch their style from early punk to something more aligned with new wave. The A-side of Marie et les Garçons traces this transition, from the opening riff of "Rien a Dire"; through the band's biggest hit, "Rebop," produced by John Cale; to the discoid "P 4 Nº 2." The B-side includes live recordings of the band playing their Velvets-esque art-punk in 1977. Marie et les Garçons was one of the most exciting late '70s French bands, especially because of Patrick Vidal's twisted and repetitive French lyrics, in a unique style that many songwriters would later imitate. With so many bands citing Marie et les Garçons as a significant influence, this first-ever reissue is long overdue. RIYL Television, The Velvet Underground, Wire, PiL, Teenage Jesus and The Jerks.

BESOMBES RIZET: Pôle LP (FBK 002LP)
This French psychedelic masterpiece by Philippe Besombes and Jean-Louis Rizet, originally released by Pôle Records in 1975, is a stunning piece of work created with synths of various kinds (VCS 3 AKS, Synthorchestra Farfisa, Mellotron 400, etc.), occasionally backed up by drums and other sounds. Lauded by artists like Julian Cope and Etienne Jaumet (Zombie Zombie) and diggers around the world, Pôle takes the listener on a trip like the gods of psychedelic music intended, from IRCAM's laboratories to German krautrock; from Faust to Cluster & Eno. The original double LP release is reissued here as a single LP (including download code for original album track "Synthi Soit-Il," absent from this LP). Pôle is ideal for a thorough shamanic journey without any new age namby-pamby. After previewing the opening track ("Haute Pression"), listeners might choose to enjoy the album while tripping, rediscovering that dark and fuzzy side of unknown '70s French avant-garde music.

Steeple Remove, founded in 1997, follows its 2008 album Electric Suite with Position Normal, a sound movie that evokes THX 1138 (1971), if George Lucas had swapped his 35mm camera for a Moog. Position Normal is the Rouen, France-based band's fourth album, following a 1997 album on seminal French label Sordide Sentimental (Throbbing Gristle, Joy Division) and two krautrock-oriented albums on 3rd Side Records; Position Normal, in turn, draws its inspiration from post-punk. Three of the album's nine songs can be heard in the first season of Les Revenants (The Returned), the French supernatural drama TV series that won an International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2013. SAN CAROL: Humain Trop Humain LP (NSF 004LP)
What if Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head (2001) met Amon Düül II's Yeti (1970)? That's what a deep listening session of French band San Carol's second album suggests; it's nothing less than a punch in the face for exhausted indie fans bored by too much softness in pop music. Composed as an unexpected blend of FM tunes and krautrock, it's also a contemporary trip into madness, where the listener will discover a few guilty pleasures (the '80s, Bono as a synthpop icon, commercial radio, etc.) resurrected on songs like "Venture," "Le Graal ardent," and "Oxyon 777," three hits bigger than whatever you've been listening to. Sweaty and groovy, Humain Trop Humain is an uninhibited album where you'll also meet Gary Numan, Bobby Gillespie, and James Murphy dancing like David Bowie with Mick Jagger in the unforgettable-but-forgotten '85 version of "Dancing in the Street." VA: Gqom Oh! The Sound of Durban Sampler 12" (GQOM 001EP)
In the South African city of Durban, new stories are being born in a dancefloor language called "gqom." This bass music often opens in a crescendo, takes a few shortcuts in 4/4, and gathers pace into a polyrhythmic frenzy. Everything happens in a DIY-oriented universe, grafting organic and homemade samples (dog barks, whip lashes, drumming sounds). There is a line of continuity with the South African house movement, though with totally new elements from the sounds of dubstep. BACHS, THE: Out of the Bachs LP (OSR 039LP)
'60s garage-psych moody monster! Out of The Bachs was originally released in 1968 as a private pressing of 150 copies; it's one of the rarest USA '60s garage/teenbeat albums ever. The band consisted of five young kids from Chicago, regulars at local teen dances, who decided to release an album for their fans before splitting up. Recorded and mixed in just ten hours at a makeshift studio, Out of The Bachs offers 12 amazing self-penned songs with a sound ahead of its time. Pure teenage-angst vocals, crashing Rickenbackers, fuzz outbursts, killer moody tracks... Sadly, all previous reissues of the album failed to capture the true sound of the original, until the Time-Lag label reissued it in 2011 with remastered sound from a pristine original vinyl copy. This reissue uses the same audio master as the out-of-print Time-Lag edition. File next to The Rising Storm, The Fantastic Dee-Jays, The Savages. WOOLFY VS. PROJECTIONS: Stations CD (PERMVAC 134CD)
The third and (for now) final chapter of the big book of Woolfy vs Projections (aka Simon James and Dan Hastie) completes the arc that began with The Astral Projections of Starlight (PERMVAC 030CD, 2008) and The Return of Love (PERMVAC 096CD, 2012). The California-based duo's albums are all loosely based on the adventures of the lost astronaut Captain Starlight, the eponymous hero of German duo Zazu's 1979 balearic rock classic. "Captain Starlight" is a useful reference point for the sound of Woolfy vs Projections, who deliver a deep balearic twilight vibe combined with a classic west coast sound, dubbed disco, beard rock, and a heavy funk bounce. Tracks like "Absynth" (which Resident Advisor compared to "Air covering Steely Dan"), "Neeve," or "Set Me Loose" are all modern classics. Stations perfects the duo's technique of filtering a psychedelic folk album through a modern-day disco aesthetic. Whether it's spaced-out house jams like "Combination" and "Tangiers," the idyllic vibes of "Walkaway," or "The Bright Light of the Truth," a hazy mood stretches over the album, which also includes a careful reconstruction of Odyssey's 1974 balearic classic "Who" to bring the listener into a state of bliss. Stations bring the space epic of Captain Starlight to a graceful end. Features Michaela and El Javi.

POLE: Wald CD (PL 013CD)
"Wald begins immediately, ends abruptly, and is divided into three acts of three tracks each. It is the first studio album under Stefan Betke's Pole moniker in eight years... half an eternity in the digital age -- yet the pieces on Wald seem timeless, or to have fallen from time. Stefan Betke: 'After Steingarten (SCAPE 044CD, 2007) I was on tour for two years. At the same time, Barbara Preisinger and I set up our record label ~scape. Those were two hindering circumstances that were not exactly conducive to a creative restart... I couldn't have really added anything new in the wake of Steingarten and the dub declensions I had made in previous years.'... Over several years, long walks in the woods preceded the resumption of the production of his own material: 'Walks through the Isar valley, but also through the forests in the Alps... You have to go through life with an open mind and with extended antennae. If something strikes you and inspires you to create new music, then it will be for a reason...' For Pole, it was the forest; its spatiality... manifested, for example, in raw sounds (second act) and in psychedelic structures (third act), which sound as if they might be guitars (but are actually distorted synthetic lines)... From the tangible experience of the forest, a rather abstract question emerges: 'How can I take what I have seen or felt and make it audible?' This question becomes a narrative, a storyline. The initial story is that Pole went into a dialogue with his instruments, and the second story can be heard in the three acts of Wald. The new compositions on Wald do not deny their inheritance within the continuum of dub, yet they bring an entirely new vocabulary to Pole's sonic and spatial universe... 'If Wald had nothing to do with the world of Pole, then I would have come up with a new alter ego and produced it under a new name.' The structures, forms, and processes that Betke perceived in the forest were translated into musical structures, forms, and processes that inherently sounded like Pole. Perhaps the forest simply produces reverberations (just like the echo in the mountains!) that give rise to a bounty of thoughts. The story behind it is told in music, without the use of words -- as has previously so often been the case with Pole." --Max Dax

ATOM TM: Riding the Void 12" (R-N 160EP)
Atom TM's Riding the Void EP is, together with the visual works of HD+ (R-N 155DVD, 2014), the conclusion of his critical yet delightful examination of pop music and culture on Raster-Noton. Like the previous EP Ich Bin Meine Maschine (R-N 146EP, 2014), Riding the Void is designed for functionality and club use. Techno maverick Scuba remixes "Riding the Void" into a straight, dense march, whereas Atom TM himself shakes the groove out of the track with his own two lighthearted remixes. His "Nought Remix" presents itself as slimmed-down yet vibrant, while "Tool" is a perfectly dancefloor-ready reinterpretation.

KLEIN, MICHAEL: Drawing EP 12" (SNDST 010EP)
Techno-savvy Berlin-based artist Michael Klein presents his Second State debut, opening with "Drawing," a journey deep into the celestial spaces between lush dub and four-to-the-floor mayhem. Littered with massive stabs of solar bursts, "Drawing" is a thrill-ride at a breakneck pace, perfect for lifting the whole place off the foundation. The drums of "Illusive Space" propel the ship into hyper-speed while a couple massive synth-blasts shift it into an even higher gear. For "Pattern Movement," Klein enlists Genevieve Marentette to pull off a colossal grinder of throbbing percussives, interweaving agile drums with auditory hallucinations of provocative female vocals.

PETRICHOR: Mångata CD (SOMA 110CD)
Petrichor, one of Glasgow's most exciting producers, presents his stunning debut album, Mångata. The man behind the project, Simon Stokes, has been gradually working his way up the ranks in his home city's scene and has firmly established himself within the Soma hierarchy with a hat-trick of original EPs, each laden with his analog-focused, dream-like sound that straddles the boundaries between electronica, house, and techno. As well as a burgeoning career in electronic music, Stokes has founded his own music production school, Shoogle Studios. As the only Ableton Certified Trainer in Scotland, he has taken on the mantle of leadership at the illustrious Soma Skool, helping a new breed of producers find their footing within the realms of electronic music production. Never one to stand still and remain focused on one facet of his skills in the studio, he has also found himself working as a mastering engineer in the studio with Soma founders Slam, helping them shape their 2014 album Reverse Proceed (SOMA 105CD). Stokes's tireless work in the studio on his own project has now come to fruition, as he delivers the dramatic and provocative Mångata. Amalgamating his array of impressive hardware and his intricate knowledge of Ableton Live, Petrichor has refined his sound and crafted an intricate, multifaceted album that draws on many spheres of influence, designed as a singular listening piece.

PIG RIDER: Heterophonies with Bloody Turkey Sandwiches 2CD (SOMM 023-24CD)
Double CD containing Heterophonies (SOMM 024LP), originally released in 1975, and Bloody Turkey Sandwiches (SOMM 023LP), originally released in 1974. Colin Kitchener and John Mayes founded Pig Rider at Sevenoaks School in Kent, England, in the late '60s. They met when they were 12, and not long after began haunting the music rooms at the school to hammer out current three-chord pop songs on pianos. They went through a number of other names (including D Jabferg Flossyakkit and Bob Scratch and His Country and South Eastern Spring Blues Band), before deciding to perform as The Pig Rider Robinson Heterophony. After a failed attempt to build a seven-foot robot bassist called Peregrine Robinson to front the band, the name was abbreviated to its current form. Pig Rider's music has been described as "joke folk/mock rock," and although they claim that their minds were only altered by beer, there's a real psychedelic element to it, not to mention their pioneering DIY spirit. They recorded at home with rudimentary equipment, used handmade modified instruments, and self-released a series of acetate-only albums housed in primitive, handmade sleeves. Heterophonies and Bloody Turkey Sandwiches were originally pressed by the custom label Deroy Sound Service in private editions of five and six acetates, respectively. The music is an amazing mix of psychedelic electric folk, acid folk, and twisted pop with funny and bizarre lyrics, tape experimentation, effects, and a homemade, stoned atmosphere. Think The Incredible String Band, The Bonzo Dog Band, Syd Barrett, R. Stevie Moore... In 2009, a review of Heterophonies appeared in the Galactic Ramble book. Richard Falk wrote, "Heavy, lo-fi, electric folk with lots of weird electronic effects and a distinctly psychedelic atmosphere." That review incited French collector Alexandre Mansuy to track down the band in 2013. "What I was on the point to discover was way beyond my wildest dreams. Heterophonies was only one of their many, many great recordings." Thanks to Mansuy, Guerssen and Sommor present a comprehensive Pig Rider reissue campaign, which began with The Robinson Scratch Theory (GUESS 058CD/145LP), a compilation of their jaw-dropping '80s stuff, and continues with first-ever reissues of Heterophonies and Bloody Turkey Sandwiches, and this double-CD edition of both rarities. Master tape sound. Includes booklet with rare photos and lyrics.

PIG RIDER: Bloody Turkey Sandwiches LP (SOMM 023LP)
Bloody Turkey Sandwiches is another ultra-rarity by British psychedelic folk band Pig Rider; only six copies were originally privately pressed by custom label Deroy Sound Service in 1974. The music here is much in the same vein as their famous Heterophonies album (SOMM 024LP), but even more crazed. Some of the tracks bring to mind the more experimental side of The Olivia Tremor Control/Black Swan Network or even They Might Be Giants -- but 20 years before those bands existed. Electric acid folk with stoned homemade atmosphere, lo-fi sound, bizarre and funny lyrics, effects, backward bits, surreal humor, psychedelic skiffle, old-timey music hall parodies, brilliant folk-rock-pop, and titles like "Interdrive Overstella," "Be Glad for the Song Has an Ending," "Pus In Our Time," and "Have You Seen Your Neighbour in the Bath?" Recommended if you like The Incredible String Band, The Bonzo Dog Band, Syd Barrett, R. Stevie Moore... First ever reissue. Includes insert with photos and lyrics. Master tape sound. Limited to 300 copies.

PIG RIDER: Heterophonies LP (SOMM 024LP)
Although nearly 60 people have played in Pig Rider or its various offshoots over the years, there have only been two ever-present members, Colin Kitchener and John Mayes, who founded the band at Sevenoaks School in Kent, England, in the late '60s. Heterophonies was originally pressed by the custom label Deroy Sound Service in a private edition of five acetates in 1975. Heterophonies was only one of their many, many great recordings." Thanks to Mansuy, Guerssen and Sommor present a comprehensive Pig Rider reissue campaign, which began with The Robinson Scratch Theory (GUESS 058CD/145LP), a compilation of their jaw-dropping '80s stuff. The series continues with first-ever reissues of two of their rarest acetates from the '70s: this edition of Heterophonies and a reissue of Bloody Turkey Sandwiches (SOMM 023LP). Both acetates are also available as a combined CD reissue (SOMM 023-24CD). Includes insert with photos and lyrics. Master tape sound. Limited to 300 copies.

FAHLER, STEFAN: Zahntasia Book (TBW 003BK)
The Bookworm presents -- with a wide grin -- the first book by Stefan Fähler. Its title, Zahntasia, inflects the name of Walt Disney's 1940 animated masterpiece with the German word for "tooth" ("Zahn"), and accordingly, it depicts a psychedental journey starring an anthropomorphic molar who suddenly gets popped out of his daily grind. Across 80 black-and-white pages, our toothy protagonist is whisked into a world of sticky indulgence, sweet romance, and confectionary hallucinations. Seeing as there's no text, the plot welcomes the viewer's own interpretation, but it seems that just like Dorothy, this displaced tooth finds the way back to his roots. Stefan Fähler created the images during an artist residency in Brazil, as well as in Belgium and his home base of Berlin. To complement his pencil drawings -- adding some extra texture where necessary -- he also utilized nail polish remover and a rickety, nearly obsolete Xerox machine. Although the story is told purely in pictures, Fähler's dentist has provided a written introduction emphasizing the importance of caring for your chompers. This book makes a charming addition to any waiting room, a trusty companion for your next acid trip, or the perfect gift for that magical wingèd lady who leaves cash under your pillow. Stefan Fähler is a freelance art director and illustrator working primarily in the music and film industries. He has designed gig posters for performers like Ariel Pink, Baths, Death Grips, Lætitia Sadier, Merzbow, Mykki Blanco, Mogwai, Wolf Eyes, and Shonen Knife and album artwork for Leslie Winer, Marina Gasolina, and Damo Suzuki. He painted the graphic titles for Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado's Oscar-nominated documentary about Sebastião Salgado, The Salt of the Earth, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival, 2014. He has directed music videos for the likes of Mediengruppe Telekommander and Heatsick, for whom he won an award for "Best International Music Video" at Leeds International Film Festival, 2014. Fähler's work can be seen in publications, exhibitions, and festivals around the globe including Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Cannes, Milan, Sydney, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Chile, and Basel. 80 pages; paperback; 110mm x 171mm. PIETROPAOLI QUARTET, ENZO: Yatra Vol. 3 CD (VVJ 100CD)
The Enzo Pietropaoli Quartet follows Yatra (2011) and Yatra Vol. 2 (2013) with the outstanding sonic construction Yatra Vol. 3. The group formed in 2011 during a series of concerts in India that sealed the members' musical and human cohesion, which also gave rise to the title Yatra, the Sanskrit word for "journey" or "procession." Bassist Enzo Pietropaoli's music evolves and takes in influences, but nevertheless keeps the spirit of traditional jazz alive. He believes in a certain classicism, trusting that his music can endure over time. With Yatra Vol. 3, he and his quartet have fine-tuned their approach toward the musical philosophy attained in the acclaimed first two volumes in the series. The readers of JazzIt magazine named Yatra "Best Album of 2011" and Enzo Pietropaoli "Best Bassist of 2011." Musica Jazz named Fulvio Sigurtà, the quartet's trumpeter, "Best New Talent of 2011," and in 2013 named the Enzo Pietropaoli Quartet "Best Italian Group of the Year." Along with an inevitable artistic growth, both individually and as a group, Yatra Vol. 3 espouses a cohesive approach and hones a sound in line with the two previous works, taking on an almost ritual significance. The ten pieces here -- five of them original tracks written by Pietropaoli -- feature remarkable instrumental duets characterized by a melodic tinge and lush tonalities that deviate stylistically from earlier genres, shying away from eclecticism without being overly traditional. The album also includes tributes to Stevie Wonder, Janis Joplin, Tom Waits, and Blur, and a song co-written by Gianni Morandi and Daniel Bacalov. Also unchanged since its inception is the band's entourage of producers, collaborators, graphic designers, and press office -- all protagonists of this extraordinary journey. Enzo Pietropaoli: double bass; Fulvio Sigurtà: trumpet; Julian Mazzariello: piano; Alessandro Paternesi: drums.

GOLDMANN, STEFAN: Remasters Vol. 3 12" (4 46091EP)
Shimmer was the record that put Stefan Goldmann on the techno map when it was originally released in 2004. The dark, throbbing tracks, reduced to the essentials, captivated many of the DJs who ruled the scene that year. Now reissued, for the DJs who play this prototype sound today. The EP explores the potential for dense, rigid percussive structures to operate as a framework for non-grid-based electronics, and investigates aspects of texture and tonality alongside ritualistic approaches to sound. GOLDBERG: Misty Flats CD (FDR 612CD)
"Barry Thomas Goldberg was 23 in 1974, the year his Minneapolis power pop group, The Batch, split up. Rudderless, he set about recording solo album Misty Flats, and though few would hear it in its day, he hit on something very special indeed. 'In 1974, the world was weary, the Vietnam War was ending, America was at this place where it didn't know where it was heading, it was the fumes of Watergate days,' says Goldberg now. 'I'd just left my band, and I didn't know where I was heading either. And that's what Misty Flats represents: neither high road nor low, but somewhere in between.' Where The Batch were a harmony-drenched power pop band in the mold of Big Star and The Rubinoos, Misty Flats was an album of ecstatic desolation, an unhinged loner-folk gem that came from a unique place: 'I wanted to make the first punk rock album, and if I'd recorded those songs with a band, maybe that's what it would've been,' Goldberg says. The album was, instead, recorded in mono in a two-day recording binge on a two-track Ampex tape machine. It features just Goldberg and his friend Michael Yonkers, author of the cult 1968 LP Microminiature Love, playing guitar, bass, harmonica, and vocals between them. In it, we hear echoes of Goldberg's childhood in Las Vegas, where trips to the movies were surrogate babysitters for his single mother. 'Hollywood' and 'Stars In The Sand' dream of LA life, where 'Pop And Ice' has a narrative straight from hard-edged '70s cinema about a drummer who's drafted into the army. 'Never Came To Stay' details his return to Minneapolis, where he remains to this day, working as an administrator for the Minnesota Twins baseball team. Back in '74, Yonkers had crushed several vertebrae at work and used his payoff to fund five albums: four of his own and Goldberg's Misty Flats, which was pressed in a run of just 500. 'We were into art, not commerce,' notes Goldberg now, but at the time he was frustrated his album was allowed to drift off into obscurity. Goldberg forged ahead to record a 24-track rock album called Winter Summer which languishes in the vault to this day; Misty Flats, however, is finally widely available in this first-ever reissue."

DEAD PREZ: Lets Get Free 2LP (GET 51311LP)
"dead prez may have been slightly ahead of their time during their golden years, but that is definitely meant as a compliment. Sermonizing Black Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and the benefits of a healthy and just lifestyle during the height of the Bad Boy / Roc-AFella era of nihilistic excess in the late '90s, they also signed to a major label (Loud / Columbia) despite leaning much more towards the burgeoning indie aesthetics of the day. But this was a good thing -- using major label muscle to wake up righteous hip-hop fans who might have fallen asleep at the wheel. The group itself -- consisting of MCs stic.man and M-1, who produced or co-produced most of the duo's music -- was formed in Tallahassee, Florida in the early 1990s (M-1 originally hailed from Brooklyn). By later that decade, the duo had started making significant waves, having their music heard on the soundtracks to Soul In The Hole and Slam, as well as appearing on albums by Big Pun and The Beatnuts. By 1998, they released their first official single, the serious, stark 'Police State,' on Loud, appropriately brought to the label by Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian. After building a solid rep over the next two years with fiery live performances, in 2000 they unleashed their debut album, Let's Get Free. The album was a welcome return to provocative and often radically political rhetoric that hearkened back to hip-hop forebears including The Coup, Public Enemy and KRS-One (as well as poetic descendants like the Last Poets and Watts Prophets). Let's Get Free was critically acclaimed and benefited from multiple singles, including the infectious, thick analog drive of 'Hip-Hop' (which became the de facto theme song for 'Chappelle's Show'); 'It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop,' with a remix co-produced by a young Kanye West; 'Mind Sex' (with Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets); and the poignant 'I'm An African.' But the singles weren't the only worthy songs, as just about every cut here has deeper meaning than most full albums by their early 2000s peers. Highlights: the thought-provoking, anti-drug album opener 'Wolves'; 'We Want Freedom' (co-produced by frequent collaborator Hedrush); 'They Schools' and 'Propaganda' (co-produced by Lord Jamar, one of five songs he assisted on). All in all, this is one of the more underrated and possibly Top 5 fully-realized political hip-hop albums of all time. If you don't agree with the previous sentence, give Let's Get Free another listen... you might be surprised at how well it has held up over the years."

CYPRESS HILL: The Phuncky Feel One/How I Could Just Kill a Man 7" (GET 743EP)
"In the early 1990s, a dark force began to rise in Los Angeles, fueled by classic '80s New York boom-bap and equally inspired by evil-tinged rock groups from the 1970s, like Black Sabbath. Just like that era of Los Angeles itself, pre-Riots and pre-The Chronic, Cypress Hill -- producer and DJ Muggs with main MC B-Real and his lyrical partner Sen Dog -- brought the city's bubbling unrest to the surface, bathed in weed smoke and exploring injustices done to the underclass by both the Police State and the Government. Technically a 'Double A-Side,' Cypress Hill's first single, from 1991, took a minute to penetrate the rap scene at large. Once it took hold, though, there was no turning back. Part of the delay may have been the aural dichotomy shown here -- 'The Phunky Feel One' is a ridiculously funky groover, laced with liquid flows that might not create a full-on party vibe, but certainly brought listeners to the brink of the dancefloor. The flip, which eventually became the group's breakthrough (thanks in part to its use in the climax to the film Juice), was a claustrophobic exploration of the gang lifestyle and mindset that was prevalent in the LA of the late '80s and early '90s. 'Here is something you can't understand,' the chorus snarled, 'How I could just kill a man.' According to group members, 'Phunky Feel' was their record label's choice for the A-Side, and 'Kill A Man' was the song they themselves wanted to show the world with their first shot. No matter which way you slice it, the single showed an impressive range in just two songs -- a complexity which would soon be fully exposed with the group's debut LP later that year. This limited edition release is a black vinyl 7-inch recreation of the original 12", featuring the single's classic artwork on a printed 7" jacket, plus a special matte black 2nd outer sleeve, embossed with the seminal skull design."

DESCLOUX, LIZZY MERCIER: Press Color CD (LITA 134CD)
"All tracks newly remastered. Liner notes by Vivien Goldman. Lizzy Mercier Descloux may have come of age in Paris, but it's in New York's Lower East Side that she really came alive. The French punk pioneer, a friend of Patti Smith and Richard Hell, moved to New York in 1977 and soon immersed herself in avant-garde poetry, performance art, and punk music. Closely associated with the founders of ZE Records (home to Was (Not Was) and Kid Creole & The Coconuts), Descloux released her debut album, Press Color, in 1979, revealing a punk-funk sound that positioned her as the French answer to the UK group The Slits or New York's own ESG. Just as The Slits gave 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' a makeover fit for warehouse parties on their celebrated Cut LP, Descloux's album revealed a penchant for the unexpected cover version too. It kicks off with a brilliantly rhythmic take on The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown's Fire -- a hit, like Marvin Gaye's in 1968. There's also a version of Lalo Schifrin's theme from Mission Impossible that appears to predate the breakbeat scene by a good twenty years. Elsewhere, we hear echoes of Serge Gainsbourg's Afrobeat-influenced work, Blondie's disco-inflected punk, and Talking Heads' world music-inspired art pop. Βacked by guitarists/bassists D.J. Barnes and Erik Elliasson plus drummer Jimmy Young, Descloux creates a naïve musical world in which rhythm is everything -- not a byproduct of the song but the reason for its existence. It's neither played nor sung with any great skill, but it has feel and character in spades and a looseness that's all too rarely achieved. Of course, an artist with song titles including 'Tumor' (a cover of 'Fever' with amended lyrics) and 'Herpes Simplex' is never a shoo-in for mainstream acceptance, and like many a No Wave classic, the album sold little. Now regarded as a cult classic, this Light In The Attic reissue is presented in an extended 18-track edition, collecting much of Descloux's work, including 'Morning High,' recorded with Patti Smith. Descloux returned to Paris upon scoring a contract with CBS and soon found herself travelling to Africa to research the Afrobeat sound experimented with -- from afar -- on Press Color. The hit single 'Mais où Sont Passées les Gazelles?' and album Zulu Rock followed. By the 1990s, Descloux had turned her back on music in favor of painting and writing, which she continued until her death in 2004. Her playful spirit lives on in this LP."

GHOSTFACE KILLAH: Twelve Reasons to Die II LP (LL 021LP)
"Fans who have been waiting for the past two years can finally rejoice: Adrian Younge's and Ghostface Killah's Twelve Reasons To Die II is coming soon. To up the ante this time around, Ghostface has added a very important lyrical companion to the mix: Raekwon. The chemistry that was cemented two decades ago on Rae's classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is as strong as ever, clearly heard on five out of the album's 13 songs. And on the topic of chemistry, executive producer and Wu-Tang patriarch The RZA returns to Part II as the story's narrator. Where the first installment of Twelve Reasons To Die was based in 1960s Italy -- detailing the machinations of the feared DeLuca crime family -- Part II inhabits the grimy streets of mid-1970s New York City. Descendants of the DeLucas are running the city, but a powerful, younger crime syndicate is percolating, commanded by black gangster Lester Kane (personified by Raekwon). As Kane's power grows, he takes on the DeLucas and a bloodbath ensues. Kane has always known the legend of Tony Starks, who was killed by the DeLucas in Italy and whose remains were partially used to create twelve vinyl records. When played back in the 'old world,' the Ghostface Killer rose and destroyed the Italian faction. This plays into the story's conclusion at the end of Part II. The storyline for Part II is vividly brought to life with the help of Younge's never-endingly evocative and unique brand of cinematic, psychedelic soul. The music -- on which Younge himself plays upwards of 10 instruments on certain songs -- was recorded strictly on analog tape, to bring out the true grit of the '70s era that provides the Twelve Reasons backdrop. Twelve Reasons To Die II is another heavy feather in the caps of all involved, especially Younge and Ghost, who again poured their skills and intellect into this dramatic and engaging tale. It all fits perfectly into the Wu-Tang family tree as well as Younge's always-expanding musical universe, which now proudly relies on Linear Labs to house it."

VA: Ayahuasca: Cumbias Psicodélicas Vol. 1 CD (LION 7665CD)
"What have we here? At first glance it seems like the missing volume from our Groove Club series, which it so easily could have been! In short, it's a stunning collection -- which took more than fifteen years to put together -- of tracks that combine cumbia with psychedelic rock. Starting in the late 1960's, there was a boom of tropical music in Peru, both in Lima and the provinces. The music called 'cumbia peruana' merged this tropical sound with that of psychedelic rock. Peculiar aspects of traditional Colombian cumbia were mixed with electric (often fuzz) guitar, played over native Andean and jungle rhythms; this combination provoked an explosion of original musical styles: an instrument to lead the way, usually from the introduction of the song; over this, hypnotic layers of keyboards or guitar with wah wah, and simple bass-lines; to top it off, syncopated rhythms from percussion instruments such as bongos, congas, huiros, cymbals, timbales, among others, often played at breakneck speed, to drive the song forward. Simple, funky, effective. In the end, it's like a sonic cousin to Nigerian music: these musicians liked guitar, they had a fondness for echo, and they loved a murky high-octane jam. Extremely limited mini-LP sleeve disc with 20-page bi-lingual, glossy, color booklet enclosed with photos and some background info on the bands and the development of the Cumbias Psicodélicas sound."

MADS, THE: En Concierto 1969 CD (LION 7667CD)
"The first (and so far only) live recording of a Peruvian rock band from the 1960's, and therefore of incredible importance to lovers of rock from that exciting scene! Those of you who already have our previous Mads/Molesto release might remember the story of the Mads: early television performances in Peru; the chance sea-side encounter with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards that got the Mads the chance to go to England; Stones' manager Marshall Chess giving the Mads recording time in the Rolling Stones' studio and at Jagger's Stargroves castle. They played the Marquee, the Lyceum, the Roundhouse. They jammed with Steve Winwood and Brian Davison (The Nice). They played with Jeff Beck and Carmine Appice. Molesto's guitar player, Alex Ventura, worked in a clothing boutique alongside Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor. But before all the craziness in London, the Mads gave a farewell concert for their fans in Peru, on 18 December 1969, at the Auditorio del Colegio Santa Ursula. The recordings on this disc come from that show. One quick listen makes clear that the Mads demonstrated a lot of Jimi Hendrix Experience influence at this stage of their brief career. Still, it's clear straight away why the Stones were impressed, why Dennis Hopper told them during the intermission of this very concert how great they were (he wanted to hook them up with Phil Spector), and why they are legends of Pervian rock. Heavy, hard, and loud. Two bonus tracks come from their sessions at the Stones' studio in London, and are in the same hard-edged vein."

FAT BOYS: Fat Boys LP (TPA 102LP)
"The Fat Boys were the highest profiled hip hop group in the early 1980's next to Run DMC. They were part of the first corporate sponsored rap concert (Fresh Fest), they were featured in the movie Krush Groove, one of the first rap groups to travel to Europe, and they sold hefty amounts of records and continued to balloon throughout the decade. Their beginnings were humble like most but quickly catapulted into full stardom. Appearances on radio, TV, full tours, magazine spreads and they even had their own embroidered satin jackets! Their first single; 'Reality' under the name Disco 3 was released unnoticed and that's when their fearless management of Charles Stettler and Lynda West decided to bring in one of the hottest names in rap at the time to produce; Kurtis Blow. The single 'Fat Boys' with Kurtis became a instant hit and it also became the new name of the group. Kurt enlisted his music team to assemble what became the debut album by the Fat Boys. Larry Smith (Run DMC's producer and arranger), Davy DMX, Don Blackman, and a whole slew of other session players laid the raw backbeat for the three boys from Brooklyn to rock the house! What separated their album from the majority of other rap records at the time was the pure rawness of the songs. The humorous element dominated the record but there was a prime roughness to their style that gave them a hardcore edge. Songs like 'Stick 'Em,' 'Fat Boys,' 'The Place To Be' & 'Human Beat Box' easily display their boisterousness."
