SUR, MARCUS: Zachow 12" (ACKER 039EP)
The melodic catchiness of Marcus Sur's productions vibrates somewhere between deep house and dub techno, taking the best of both worlds to yet another level. The minimal but heady tune of "The World in Small Doses" rings and throbs from a multitude of acoustic dimensions. "The Masquerade" is full of subliminal drama and perfidious complexity, whereas "The Lessons" is dominated by the dreamy voice of singer Ann Jasmund that expands over a heaving patchwork of warm harmony. "Magnetic Ribbons" is remixed by Mollono.Bass.

ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO DE COTONOU: Volume Three -- The Skeletal Essences of Afro Funk 1969-1980 2LP (AALP 073LP)
Gatefold double LP version. Analog Africa presents a new compilation of 14 funky tracks by the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou from Benin. Following two previous Poly-Rythmo collections released by the multiple award-winning label, 2008's The Vodoun Effect (AACD 064CD/AALP 064LP) and 2009's Echos Hypnotiques (AACD 066CD/AALP 066LP), this third compilation is another proof that our ears are facing "one of the funkiest bands in the world." Starting in 2005, Samy Ben Redjeb, Analog Africa's founder and compiler, made several trips to Benin, where he dug up most of the orchestra's output recorded between 1969 and 1983: hundreds of vinyl records and a few master tapes, in a total of 500 songs. With all that material in hands and the astonishing richness of the group's material, choosing the songs proved to be a tough task. Therefore, it seems only natural that it has taken a few years for this third volume to come out of Analog Africa's sonic treasure trove. The 14 tracks presented here have never been issued outside of Africa and most of them follow the spirit and sound of the first volume, The Vodoun Effect, which was a selection of songs released by small and obscure labels from this tiny country which was once known as Dahomey. Some of the songs presented here were recorded using a legendary piece of equipment -- a Swiss-made Nagra reel-to-reel recorder and one or two microphones, in private houses or open-air gardens, mostly at night. And still, it would be somewhat difficult for contemporary musicians and engineers to achieve the stunning quality of raw sound and the atmosphere obtained in these recordings, even if they booked the most modern and expensive studios out there today. One thing that immediately catches the attention listening to this compilation is the band's steamroller-like grooves employed by Gustave Bentho, the mythical bass master, and Leopold Yehouessi, the fantastic drummer -- for many, Africa's funkiest rhythm sections. The power of these tunes is phenomenal and shows true craftsmanship on both the composition and the production side. "Houton Kan Do Gome," composed by Bentho, would have made James Brown proud. "Ecoutes ma melodie" is destined to become a classic late-night tune for the many amazing tropical and Afro parties taking place around the globe. "Pourquoi pas?" and "A O O Ida" would be the kind of sound The Meters would have created were they born in Benin. On December 17th, 2012, Melome Clement, the man who formed the all-powerful orchestra, passed away of a heart attack. The "boss," as the other band members would tenderly call him, will be missed, but not forgotten. The soul of the music he created has permanently engraved itself in the soil of Benin.

PAILHES, EZECHIEL: Divine CD (CC 013CD)
For a long time before the success of Nôze led him to discover the rest of the world, Ezechiel Pailhès remained a prophet in his country. For a long time as well, he worked on creating what became his first solo album, waiting for the right moment when he could no longer contain all the melodies that populate this 14-leg epic. A voyage in a free world, where creation knows no formal constraints, transforming the original pieces without knowing in advance how they will end up, disguising the instruments so that they are mistaken for others -- nothing frightens this intrepid sailor whose ship is nevertheless securely moored at home in Paris. Sole master on board, the tinkerer illusionist prepares his piano with mechanic's tools (Scotch tape, rubber, percussion, wooden claves adrift over the strings), obtaining instruments that sound unexpected. Here are 14 captivating melodies like siren-songs, sometimes dressed in a simple lala or lyrics by David Lafore -- 14 ports of call offering a sweetness that is at times extremely melancholy, 14 pieces whose implacable refrains take root the first time you listen to them. This is indeed a divine crossing of wide-ranging references such as Serge Regianni, D'Angelo, Bernard Hermann, Timber Timbre, and Stevie Wonder but also Henri Duparc, Moondog, Keith Jarrett and Tony Bennett). Ezechiel's career as a pianist has evolved on the stages where he has been performing for years as a duo with Nicolas Sfintescu (Nôze). Divine is the companion for all trips, the disk you take to the deserted island and to the loft in Berlin, the disk that you play constantly without tiring of it because each listening reveals places you were unaware of, sounds that had not yet been discovered, because it thrills music lovers.

STAREAWAY: No Life in This Ghost Town 2LP (NT 001LP)
Stareaway is Markus Guentner from Regensburg, of Kompakt and Ware fame, and Heiko Badje from Hamburg, the man behind saudade-driven pop band La Grande Illusion. Exploring the possibilities of combining Guentner's critically-acclaimed adventures in ambient scapes and Badje's melodies and distinctive singing, their track "Baghira," as an early result, was selected for Kompakt's Pop Ambient 6 compilation in 2005. Their first EP as Stareaway, called Learn How to Love Me, was released on Hamburg-based label Couldn't Care More in 2011, including a remix by deep house icon Osunlade, and the somewhat timeless electronic pop reference, "Unwise." Now Stareaway come up with their first album No Life in This Ghost Town (again on Couldn't Care More); seven sketches between song and track, deliberately carved from a shimmering wall of electronic sound by guitars, spiritualized voices and subtle melodies. It's caressing and thoughtful, but there is also a darkness that makes you shiver. Glowing embers in far away windows. Stareaway combine a vision of sound with multitudes of micro-organisms which take turns no one can foresee. And what may appear as a mere coincidence is in fact a concentrated search. They are seekers of the things lying underneath. Stareaway's No Life in This Ghost Town is mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri. Double vinyl plus download code. Layout by JL Prozess (Markus Guentner), artwork by Claudia Kugler.

BELTRAN, JOHN: Amazing Things CD (DSR 098CD)
After the well-received and career-spanning compilation that was 2011's Ambient Selections (DSR 088CD/LP), John Beltran returns with a brand-new album entitled Amazing Things. As a life-long pioneer of ambient soundscapes, blissful downbeat and stirring techno, Michigan-born John Beltran already has his place in history assured with a bulging back catalog that takes in influential releases on vital labels like Peacefrog and R&S. This 17-track album sees the man draw on his lifetime in music to craft an immediately timeless body of work that's stuffed with genuine musicality, pregnant with emotion and laden with organic blissfulness. Since Beltran's last original full-length, he admits a lot has changed. "I'm using all new gear and virtual synths that I didn't have when writing Human Engine, so it sounds different for sure. And let's just say that this album still wouldn't be finished had a friend not turned me on to the software Omnisphere." Despite new tools and techniques, Beltran's touch still shines through in his floating arrangements, opposing textures and organic resonance, as do the continued influences of favorite artists including Four Tet, Thom Yorke, and Johnny Greenwood. Tracks like opener "Retrouvailles" immediately submerge you into a utopian world with the distant sound of a playground coming over like the backdrop to a daydream, while more kinetic, splintered efforts like "Het Leven Is Mooi" recall the aforementioned patchwork beauty of Four Tet, and "Flower Power Submarine" carries you along on a warm summer breeze. Importantly, dark is contrasted with light throughout, so more sombre, melancholic drifts like "For Vangelis" sit next to the more uplifting violins and raindrop melodies of "Broken Machines." Overall a mature and hugely resonant album for grown-ups, Amazing Things is full of just that.

STIMMING: Stimming 2LP (DIYNAMIC 010LP)
Double LP version. Stimming's self-titled new album was born on the beaches of the Baltic Sea, during a five-week retreat from reality in the winter of 2012. The contrast of traditional and modern, of colorful yet sinister, of classical but still unheard compositions is the main focus of this album. These controversies are reflected in the album cover as well: bright waves surrounded by dark skies, a beautiful and enchanting cherry blossom placed upon two black, headless pigeons, bringing together elements that are not intended to be combined. These pigeons are the main theme of the track "Die Taube auf dem Dach," a track that brings across the hope and dream of freedom. The third track "Ferdinand (feat. Urzula Amen)" delivers driving basses, Spanish guitar sounds and beautiful vocals by singer Urzula Amen that emerge into multi-layered harmonies, accompanied by enchanting synthesizer sounds. She also appears on "From One Cell," which comes across as a light and sizzling -- yet soulful -- interpretation of modern house. "Die Mächtigen" is an anger-filled statement about the world's political and even daily life, for the sake of profit. The track "Cherry Bud" is set amidst what seems like a comfortable tea-time scene -- a beautiful piano piece is playing, providing a perfect reference for the later track "Cherry Blossom." Another example of Stimming's combination of classical elements very modern production methods is heard on the track "Dylan's Theme," where strings and bass seem to go hand-in-hand. As soon as the beautiful strings (played by Dylan Naylor) reach their climax, the artist mercilessly destroys them. The album reaches a deep and sinister point with the track "Uberblick" -- the artist's own voice creeps under your skin and the steady beat is interrupted by short kettledrum-rolls, making the track suspenseful and exciting. To round it all off, "Feeding Seagulls" is a reference to his first track, showing off a simple synthesizer harmony combined with a complex melody and bringing you back to the very beginning.

INNODE: Gridshifter LP (EMEGO 168LP)
Innode enters the world with an audacious debut of rhythm and sound, space and silence, and an astonishing blend of the acoustic and the electronic. Spearheaded by Stefan Németh (cofounder of Radian, Lokai) in close collaboration with Steven Hess (Locrian, Pan.American, Cleared) and Bernhard Breuer (Elektro Guzzi, Tumido), Gridshifter is an intense, astonishing sonic experience which navigates the line between formal structures and experimental interplay. Conceived as a series of cross-bred experiments where, on one side, a human rhythm triggers electronic signals while on the other electronic textures sculpt a platform for physical human engagement. The stark dynamics and human/non-human interaction manifests itself as a thrilling exposé of 21st century rhythm and noise. The term "gridshifter" plays on the idea of composed disorder by applying opposing moves upon a template of rigid structure. On certain tracks, a strict timeline or grid is spiked via grids of a different size being played at the same time, while on others, Steven and Bernhard "shifted" the grid by overlaying their own rhythms, resulting in a destabilized sonic environment. As Németh describes the artwork he sums up the entire modus operandi, "These arrays, or biochips, are samples of DNA laid out as a series of microscopic spots bound to a small glass slide. Corresponding images look highly organized, but show a lot of tiny imperfections at the same time... this fact makes them especially interesting for me." Innode explore an exhilarating terrain whereby simple, pure forms, both human and electronic weave together, unfeathered, untarnished, unprocessed, leaving a web of intense, extreme sonic dynamics. "Dedispersion I & II" and "Planes and Numbers" originally written for an exhibition by Andrés Ramírez Gaviria. Members: Stefan Németh (synthesizers), Steven Hess (drums) (on B-side), Bernhard Breuer (drums) (on "Dedispersion I & II").

KAROCEL: Plaited 2LP (FREUDE 008LP)
Double LP version. Includes a download coupon for the album. Freude Am Tanzen presents the debut album from Karocel. What do you do when a live project exceeds its own ambitions? Just keep doing the wonderful concerts and eventually head to the studio. Sounds simple and conclusive. In the case of Karocel, that was exactly how they went about it and surprisingly, all six band members made it happen. Though the four members of Marbert Rocels, Mathias Kaden, and Michael-Mitchi-Nagler have known each other from their hometown along the Gera-Jena-Erfurt corridor, and the Karocel live shows have been well-received, an album is an entirely different beast. In the fall of 2012 everyone got together in Marbert Rocel's studio for three intense jam sessions. With a single click it all began -- after a while everything was knotted together only to be woven through the mixer where it then lay. Post-production vocals and overdubs weren't needed. The 10 pearls that emerged from those sessions glistened in their raw form and now, the multifaceted nature of a Karocel event is now available in album format. In various dramatic curves Plaited prances over the dancefloor. Right smack in the middle there are tracks like "This One," "Tease You," and "Undo" and the bar-shaking "Vox," "Watts," "Boys," and "Don't Play," the kissing-on-the-sofa "Without" and the one for on the way home, "Parallels." Plaited is a complete work of art, no question.

DRACULA LEWIS: U$e Your Illu$ion$ LP (H 023LP)
After a 12" for the Souterrain Transmissions label, Dracula Lewis delivers his long-awaited debut full-length U$e Your Illu$ion$; a title which evokes an imaginary deviant glamor which is synonymous with the teasing nature and sense of mystery that's part of Dracula Lewis' world. Working with an abundance of pop-based ideas and an abstract mentality, the record brings to mind, in manner and tone, hallucinatory avant strategies that were typical of the second wave of industrial. The material is based around a narrative of total fantasy, sometimes very dark, others a shimmering duel between light and shadow. Piercing synth tones, pounding beats, samples and effected vocals are the staples of U$e Your Illu$ion$'s sonic make-up, while each song confronts traditional song structure as well as embraces them with a certain amount of playful austerity. They also form an estranged narrative visually that ridicules the emptiness within the density of Dracula Lewis' stylistic and fantastical references. Like his contemporary Sewn Leather (who is covered here on "Smoke Ov the Punk"), it's the underlying punk attitude to U$e Your Illu$ion$ which hits home the most, using primitive electronics and dub techniques to epitomize desecration and neglect. Die-cut, fold-out sleeve.

SCHWELLENBACH, GREGOR: Spielt 20 Jahre Kompakt 2LP+CD (KOM 275LP)
Deluxe double LP version in hardbound packaging. Includes a CD of the album and a music book with piano scores for solo pieces and full scores for ensemble pieces. From the borderlands between faux pop and cheerful science comes Cologne's multi-instrumentalist Gregor Schwellenbach, who separated 20 label classics from their dance roots and re-recorded them as chamber music. The sophisticated arrangements, which the studied composer Gregor Schwellenbach writes for everything, have been primarily adorning the landscapes of theater, film, radio and television so far. Now, the master of over a thousand instruments has submitted his pop-experimental expertise for Kompakt's back-catalog, radically shifting up some of the numerous evergreens hiding in there. Not only aficionados of musical synthesis are likely to rub their ears in wonder, when internationally-celebrated techno bangers like Voigt & Voigt's "Vision 03" or Mayer/Voigt's "Less Than Zero" suddenly beguile the frequency spectrum as beatless, melancholic piano miniatures. The multi-talented musician also gets help from other, equally adept artists, who put their personality and virtuosity in the service of the unusual task at hand: with flutist Dorothee Oberlinger, a veritable star of the classical music scene enters the stage, but also guitarist Christian Buck or harpist Jane Berthe are well recognized in their respective fields, normally performing the likes of Steve Reich and Claude Debussy to a delighted audience. The instruments used in the recordings happen to be stars, too: for example, there's a rare GDR-built keyboard called "Weltmeister Basset" that contributes to a re-arranged "Everlasting" from Kaito, an old studio harmonium whose hypnotic whisper can be heard on Closer Musik's revamped "On Two Three (No Gravity)," or the epic "Kyai Sangu" used for Voigt & Voigt's "Gong Audio," a Gamelan orchestra found at Cologne's Rautenstrauch-Joest museum. Usually, Kompakt's weapon of choice is the straight bass drum, with its minimalist beauty fueling their dialectics. But they never wanted to become strict guardians of an imagined holy grail, a fact clearly recognized by Gregor, who gives a new voice to each of the selected tracks, in order to be able to tell new stories. With surprisingly rephrased acoustic versions of seminal tracks like Jürgen Paape's "Triumph" (for prepared piano), Justus Köhncke's "Was Ist Musik" (for string quartet), or Closer Musik's "Maria" (for piano), the artist makes some pretty bold assertions while managing to retain the core of the experience -- the melody, the hook, the feeling -- while making it shine in new splendor

AFRIQUA: Melt EP 12" (LOKEE 002EP)
Lokee Musik's sophomore release features Afriqua. The title-track features broken groove with Afriqua's minimal perspective. Electric pulse stabs are at the heart of this rhythm and drive it with a much-appreciated space. Vocals from Sorcha Richardson add an eerie, anthemic touch. Cesar Merveille delivers the first remix -- an epic 12-minute journey that maintains Afriqua's hypnotic intentions with a more uplifting and positive tone. James Teej provides his trademark synth-work for the other remix.

East End Dubs delivers a surgical strike on this Metroline four-track release. Clever EQ-riding, and some sexy French vox give the track depth. Snilloc takes remixing duties on "Summa Dis," twisting the original into a track pounder, and finally we end up in the once-fashionable "Hoxton," while has a ghostly, nostalgic quality.

MILES: Faint Hearted 2LP (LOVE 081LP)
Repressed! Miles has been releasing material on Modern Love for a decade, first as one-half of Pendle Coven, then on his own as MLZ, and eventually pairing up with Sean Canty to record as Demdike Stare. In between he's also pursued more experimental terrain under the Suum Cuique moniker, produced jungle for the HATE project and (together with Andy Stott) taken on the occasional release as Millie & Andrea for Modern Love sub-label Daphne. He is also an admired, exhilarating DJ, and his sets have been known to span a broad spectrum of electronic music, from the obscure UK techno of labels like Radioactive Lamb and Irdial, to classic Chicago house, Detroit techno and -- most importantly -- early '90s jungle and breakbeat, feeding into his love of the most uncompromising end of the Italian experimental movement, musique concrète, synthwave, and contemporary noise. After more than 10 years of producing, Faint Hearted is his debut solo album -- an exposition of Miles' love of electronic music in all its shapes, harnessing his fidgety production style into one expansive, restless set of tracks. The album opens with the filtered and looped jungle mutation of "Lebensform," through to the minimal, barely-noticeable bass-shifts of "Irreligious," the classic Plastikman-infused looped ruffage of "Status Narcissism" and the padded bliss of "Sense Data," coming across like a lost Move D production from the classic Studio Pankow era. The second half opens with "Rejoice," a slowly-unfurling 4/4 variant that sounds like a more technofied and electric take on his work with Demdike Stare, while "Archaic Thought Pattern 1" invades a sequence of strings and bass notes with blasts of white noise, sounding like something off Aphex Twin's Donkey Rhubarb EP rebuilt by Mika Vainio. The set ends with the evocative field-recorded sequence "Queuing" and the ambient futurism of "Loran Dreams," in some respects the straightest, most affecting nine-minute stretch yet from a producer who is seemingly unable to settle or stand still. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton, pressed at Pallas.

SIRIUSMO: Enthusiast 2LP (MONKEY 033LP)
Double LP version. As soon as Mosaik, Siriusmo's debut album, got released in 2010, studio-work for the sophomore album began. Unfortunately, the myth of the difficult second album became a reality and so the album changed its face again and again, got delayed various times, until finally, at the beginning of 2013, Siriusmo was happy with what he had accomplished. After beat works for Snoop Dogg and an album collaboration with Boys Noize, Siriusmo now finally presents Enthusiast, his long-anticipated second album. Enthusiast features 13 songs ranging from neo-disco house tunes, electro-pop, cutting edge hip-hop to UK bass-inspired beat constructs and various electronic listening experiments. Multifaceted and eclectic as always, Siriusmo knows how to satisfy high expectations without compromising his sound. To some, Mosaik felt less like an album and more like a compilation, with its drastic jumps from genre to genre and its wild-style, all-over-the-place attitude. Regardless of which opinion you share, Enthusiast combines the best of both worlds and makes for one of the most compelling offerings from Siriusmo in his more than a decade-long recording career. The album still shows no signs of a one-sided sound, but at the same time, it is a more homogeneous and mature piece of work. Enthusiast definitely bears the hallmarks of what we've come to expect from a great Siriusmo record.

AAVIKO: Planet Fun-Fun LP (MUYSIC 008LP)
The legendary electronic synthesizer music group from Finland, Aaviko, return with a new mini-LP. Aavikko is a trio comprised of Tomi Kosonen, Tomi Leppänen, and Paul Staufenbiel. Between them, these three also share membership in Finnish groups Circle, K-X-P, Astro Can Caravan, and Pharaoh Overlord. This mini-LP contains electro-acoustic desert light-rock and pop music, also some jazz and so-called funky music, while also combining classical music's scales. Aavikko (meaning "the desert" in Finland's Suomi language) has existed since 1995. Leppänen's incredibly precise drumming combines with analog electronic sequences, and Kosonen and Staufenbiel's synthesizers form catchy sounds. Planet Fun-Fun also features Swedish singer Slobyn and Dr. Albania as a background singer. And for the first time in Aavikko, the electric guitar is also heard, from rising young talent Tero Holopainen. Recorded in STINK studio, and mixed by Ilari Larjosto.

TAKAMASA, AOKI: RV8 CD (R-N 148CD)
With RV8, the Osaka-based producer and musician Aoki Takamasa continues his long-term project that focuses on the modulation of rhythms and grooves. It began with his first EP Rhythm Variations in 2009, released as part three of the Unun-series. Besides his collaboration with Raster-Noton, he released records on several labels like Commmons, Progressive Form and Op.Disc, produced remixes for well-known musicians like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yoshihiro Hanno and played performances at Elektra/Montreal and Club Transmediale/Berlin, all in all making him a renowned producer in Japan and beyond. Starting with a firework of bleeps and bops, already the very first minutes of this record reveal Aoki's preference for vibrating beats and likewise his playful approach to music, generating a sound that aims for the dancefloor. Like the first ones, almost all tracks of the record are characterized by a constant modulation of chords and lines that sometimes appears somehow hyperactive, but nevertheless results in a natural flow that perfectly reflects Aoki's laid-back attitude combined with his will to produce danceable and funky music. The fluent arrangement is only interrupted by the third track, which forms a caesura by being more reduced and slower. In contrast to this, the following tracks present a faster tempo and an increased intensity; and whereas the first tracks reflect downbeat and R'n'B influences due to their broken beats and chunky sound, the later songs are characterized by a more sleek and technoid style, incorporating dribbling basses, clappy-sounding snares and modulated voice snippets. Although all of the musical components are constantly broken down, modulated, and rearranged, the overall sound of the record is dense and compact, featuring a groove made up of numerous elements that are complexly intertwined. The eight tracks of the record fit seamlessly together and create a composition that nearly functions like a DJ set. The album was mastered by Yoshinori Sunahara.

TRISTESSE CONTEMPORAINE: Woodwork EP 12" (REC 099EP)
The Woodwork EP is the second episode of the Tristesse Contemporaine story. This is a definition of their DNA in four new tracks: "Waiting" -- obsessive, haunted, elegiac -- the art of making dead people dance. "Vampires" -- in the shadow of new wave giants, a minimal prayer to make ghosts go away. "Woodwork" -- sun-drenched and languid, this is Tristesse Contemporaine's very own version of a praise for patience. "Low Tide" puts things back on the dancefloor for a perverted, drug-induced nursery rhyme.

ACID WASHED: House of Melancholy 2LP (REC 102LP)
Acid Washed, a duo that arose from the second wave of French house, are bringing back everything that house music comprises, including its political, social, utopian, and more subversive matters. Legendary club culture, with its heroes and its secret stories, is where Andrew Claristidge and Richard d'Alpert found the ideas of pretty much everything that they wanted to inject into Acid Washed. Considered a return to the origins of house and techno music after a euphoric first album, House of Melancholy proposes a synthetic cocktail -- a highly idiosyncratic return to the origins of their own house and techno. Those who only see Acid Washed as a pair of skillful technicians of vintage synths and references are in for a surprise. Recorded after traveling twice around the world, House of Melancholy is the soundtrack of Claristidge and d'Alpert's lives, following the leap into the void. As Richard says, ''My melancholy always travels with me,'' and it's especially the emotional paradox of electronic music as it resonates in our hearts that reveals itself here. Without ever getting to the shores of electro-pop, the duo puts a little more of real, heavy pop, of '70s Italian variety, of Morricone, or Philip Glass soundtracks, and very pure electronica in their dance music. Particularly, Andrew and Richard surrounded themselves with friends to celebrate better: the exceptionally-gifted Joakim at the production board, as well as Yan Wagner, Miss Kittin, Ahmad Larnes, Hypnolove, Turzi, and La Mverte. House of Melancholy is a human adventure and an ode to music which unites bodies and souls. Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

DREAM 2 SCIENCE: Dream 2 Science LP (RH RSS4-LP)
2013 repress. Official re-release of this "lost" 6-track mini album by New Yorker Ben Cenac (of Newcleus fame). Recorded and released in 1990, this is an absolute gem of a record -- very much in the vein of Larry Heard's best recordings. Electronic soul classic! Now available again for the first time in 22 years, remastered plus full artwork. A truly dreamy, beautiful classic deep-house mini-album from the golden post-Larry Heard era. New Yorker Ben Cenac, who was also member of electro pioneers Newcleus (and part of Sha-lor, who had a cool, jazzy garage-house hit in the late '80s), shows a great sensibility and delicacy here in following Mr. Heard's path. His approach is perhaps slightly more sci-fi in the synths and pad sounds, and perhaps a tad less crafted and mercurial in production than the master (i.e. less timeless), but this adds in realness and charm. So, past the classic deep-garage dream "My Love Turns To Liquid" (in the vein of these sultry garage productions from Peter and Vanessa Daou), the rest of the record shows constant quality, with song titles that could have been (or actually have been) used by Mr. Heard himself. There is a content oscillating between warming deep house, sweet acid, lush garage and relaxed space-jazz piano parts, the whole thing also evoking the Beloved's better "rave" moments ("The Sun Rising" etc).

VA: The Ecstasy of Gold: 23 Killer Bullets from the Spaghetti West Vol. 1 2LP (SA 001LP)
Selected from one of the most complete Spaghetti Western audio archives, this 5-volume series showcases the most inspired tracks in this legendary genre. Digging deep to excavate a treasure trove of obscure and rarely-heard tracks by some of the genre's greatest composers and vocalists, Ecstasy of Gold is the definitive series for aficionados of Euro-Western films and the music that they created. Loud gunshots with reverb and echo appear with the first image of a lawless killer riding a horse... a punchy & trebly bass guitar seeps into your brain as he draws his pistol... a hair-raising scream half-melodic, half-banshee spews forth from the speakers as blood splatters yet again onto the desert floor. The audio soundtrack to the Italian version of the American West is flamboyant, brutal, intense, and unforgiving. Songs composed for the Italian Westerns of the 1960s and 1970s have become a genre all unto themselves. There were hundreds of European Westerns during this period and the majority of them were made by Italian directors and scored by Italian composers. Crying trumpets, exploding surf guitars, thundering drums, droning organs, dramatic vocal performances, and innovative special effects were woven into a wild and violent desert backdrop creating that undeniable Spaghetti Western sound heard on this record. The most famous of all the Italian soundtrack composers is Ennio Morricone and his music for the Italian Western is guaranteed to inspire and amaze until the end of time itself. But there were many other great and legendary maestros who scored their share of Westerns and this compilation presents transcendent, brilliant and challenging tracks from the likes of: Bruno Nicolai, Gianni Ferrio, Francesco De Masi, Marcello Giombini, Luis Bacalov, Stelvio Cipriani, Alessandro Alessandroni, Nora Orlandi, Nico Fidenco, Piero Umiliani, and many others. 2LP gatefold in a limited edition pressing of 750 copies.

MATERIA: Atlas LP (SLM 070LP)
LP version. Slime reaches a new milestone for the label with the launch of its first physical release. To celebrate, they welcome the return of Swedish producer Materia, who has crafted Atlas, a debut full-length album that extrapolates the fundamentals of house, garage, dubstep, and techno -- then fuses them into a listening experience full of warmth and texture which reveals further depths through every repeated play. "Otherland" is the opening statement of intent. Windswept and widescreen, its cinematic qualities are pushed to the fore from the outset with melancholy chords drenched over skeletal percussion. The mood intensifies as the ice-cold beat drops and the track draws you slowly under its spell. "Clouds" sees a collaboration with NYC vocalist Winter and UK lyricist Koast. Over a narcotic half-step rhythm, Koast delivers a heartfelt paean to hedonism taking its toll, while Winter adds her gossamer voice to proceedings, elevating the track into something solemn yet beautiful. "Grounded" evokes hazy summer nights spent in a neon-soaked metropolis, as live strings, guitar and brass coalesce into a laidback groove that exudes a rich sensuality. "Shallow Waters" goes south of the equator and turns the tempo up for a rolling house cut with live Rhodes and flute in a playful interchange. "Shadows" finds cavernous space in dubwise rhythms, with a booming sub-bass strapped to skittering beats and emotive chords. "Headspace" combines dub and techno textures with startling results, offering up an expansive galaxy of spectral sound to drift into. "Skylight" sees the return of songstress Winter to add sugar-sweet vocal textures over a gorgeous drum 'n' bass rhythm that is full to the brim with sunshine. "Downstream" draws the listener down deep into a seductive house groove with live saxophone played with a mischievous touch by Startslow. "Ruins" is a joint composition between Materia and the highly-regarded Bristol producer Forsaken, who combine for an atmospheric slow-house jam with a moody energy all its own. "Synthesis" completes the journey with a grand flourish, delving into tech-house territory for an epic nine-minute excursion into interstellar rhythms that takes you off the edge of the world into ecstasy.

CHASING KURT: From the Inside 2LP (SUOL 003LP)
Gatefold double LP version. Chasing Kurt are Pascal Blanché, Wojtek Kutschke, and Lukas Poloczek: two long-time deep house lovers, plus one rogue funk 'n' soul man. It can all be traced back to a fateful night in Giessen, Germany -- where the boys call home. Like most modern day coincidental trysts, it took place in a bar: DJ spun long into the night, while barkeep kept the drinks flowing. As both wound up their respective shifts, barkeep let slip a vocal tune or two. DJ couldn't help but notice. He invited barkeep back to a jam session; at a third's humble home studio. Barkeep was delighted. Though house wasn't really his thing, he had been jamming and gigging for years, and accepted immediately. "Daydream" was the result: a lush, gentle, sultry little ballad -- so good a brand new label was conceived for its release. Finally, Wojtek and Pascal had found their missing link in Lukas' lyrical touch -- a poignant third dimension and invaluable human stamp that would continue to color the nascent Chasing Kurt project on follow-ups "Money" (featured on Maya Jane Cole's widely-touted DJ-Kicks mix) and "Into the City," as well as a second outing on Carry On entitled "In the Air" and "One Day." In a short space of time, the trio has made long, arching strides in the climb up to a dance path of their very own, leaving warm, billowy, velveteen trails behind them saturated with Lukas' soulful pop tones that has helped set Chasing Kurt apart from blancher contemporaries. From the Inside is their debut full-length, and first release for Berlin's Suol Music institution. Expect languid beats and hazy dancefloor-ready rhythms, matched beautifully all the while to seductive tales of love lost and battles fought and won.

Rødhåd is one of Berlin's most promising and talked-about artists. With EPs on Dystopian (the label he helms with friends) and one remix on Semantica, that's quite an achievement. Spomeniks EP is his first release outside of Dystopian but preserves his deep, powerful, and melancholic style. ECILA: The Sofa Managements LP (VV 014LP)
Originating from Belarus, Ecila (Sveta Shljachova) has been residing for many years in Belgium. Involved for the last 15 year in different musical projects with life-long partner Nikita Chudjakov, they founded the breakcore-oriented STREFF and Elements Of Sci-Fi, amongst others. 2012 saw the release of Stories, under her alias Alice In Kosmoland. Ecila now presents her debut album The Sofa Managements. The album includes crackling electronica as a vast ambient atmosphere. Ecila took an angelic quote by Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides to summarize the album's inspiration: "...This leads Aristotle in turn to the demonstrated fact that God, glory and majesty to Him, does not do things by direct contact. God burns things by means of fire; fire is moved by the motion of the sphere; the sphere is moved by means of a disembodied intellect, these intellects being the 'angels which are near to Him,' through whose mediation the spheres [planets] move... thus totally disembodied minds exist which emanate from God and are the intermediaries between God and all the bodies [objects] here in this world." --Guide for the Perplexed II:4. The Sofa Managements is produced by Sveta Shlachova (Ecila) and mastered by Nikita Chudjakov. It is released in a limited numbered edition of 200 copies and pressed on clear vinyl. Includes a download code.

LA YEGROS: Viene de Mi CD (ZZK 017CD)
Viene de Mi is La Yegros' debut album and the first female signing to the renowned ZZK label. She is seen as the First Lady of cumbia in a typically male-dominated scene. A graduate of the Music Conservatory of Morón, she first tasted the spotlight in 1998 as part of De La Guarda, performing in front of a 15,000 strong crowd. It was here she also met Gaby Kerpel (better known as King Coya), the highly-acclaimed composer of the music for the De La Guarda and Fuerza Bruta shows and the producer of her debut album Viene de Mi. Fusing the traditional, festive chamamé music from her father's Misiones province in the northeast jungles of Argentina, the Colombian cumbia that her mother introduced her to, and the influences of her own upbringing in Buenos Aires, her music has already piqued the attention of MTV Iggy, NPR, and The Fader. On Viene de Mi, Kerpel adds to it his own dark, electronic twist on Andean folkloric rhythms. Under the ZZK banner she has toured the world, playing festivals like Central Park's Summerstage and the Roskilde Festival in Denmark.

THOMPSON, MAYO: Corky's Debt To His Father LP + 7" (DC 049LP)
2013 repress. LP version with bonus 7"; one of the great Drag City releases (and one of the great American music solo albums) finally on vinyl again. "In 1970, Mayo Thompson (once-and-future leader of The Red Krayola) recorded an album entitled Corky's Debt To His Father. Walt Andrus' Texas Revolution label released the record -- but just barely, selling a few hundred LPs with no promotion to speak of. The copies that made it into shops became the treasured objects of taste-makers around the globe -- which made Corky's Debt To His Father an influential record down the years. As punk rock, new wave, post-punk and all the rest came along, it was inevitable that this lost classic of independent music would be discovered by a wider audience. In 1988, the album was reissued on the UK Glass Records imprint but went out-of-print again in short order. Then in 1994, Drag City brought Corky's Debt To His Father back to the USA, as well as to the CD format for the first time. Additionally, a third pressing of the vinyl was made. The CD has been a perennial favorite ever since -- but after just a few months of robust sales, the LP artwork and jackets were destroyed in a fire, thus putting the end to the life of Corky's Debt To His Father on vinyl once again. Wrapped in a jacket that recalls the halcyon days of solid LP dominance, this new pressing comes with a 7" single featuring the instrumental 'Woof,' which was recorded at the same sessions but not released until The Red Krayola's 2004 compilation CD Singles. The B-side of this single is a never-before heard take on John Cage's '4'33"' played by fellow traveller Sergei McUgly."

ROYAL TRUX: 3-Song EP CD (DC 154CD)
2013 repress. "1998, and according to the press, Royal Trux were back in action. Given the powerful response to Accelerator, an EP would be needed soon -- and with a long European tour impending, what better time than the present? In short order, the three songs were recorded, along with a fourth, a cover of Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing' which was set aside to be used as a B-side for a planned UK single release. The songs were a funky bunch -- 'Deafer Than Blind' was a sweet 'n' sour ballad built off a drum loop, 'Run, Shaker Life' was a Richie Havens cover with spiritual overtones and 'The United States of America vs. One 1974 Cadillac El Dorado Sedan' was a proggy group jam that featured an extensive libretto and comprised one of the longest Royal Trux song yet. The static-crisp high end of Accelerator was abandoned in favor of a smeared, bottom-heavy sound, showcasing the thunder in the stomping rhythm section and a darker tone in Hagerty's bent-neck histrionics. This was something that one might almost regard as straight-up rock in Royal Trux terms, and Neil and Jennifer harmonized in their own unique way throughout the record. 3-Song EP is now available again for the first time in almost a decade."

HARRINGTON, CURTIS: Nice Guys Don't Work in Hollywood: The Adventures of an Aesthete in the Movie Business Book (DC 407BK)
"What other film director has a) created avant-garde films and was part of Kenneth Anger's inner circle, b) directed critically acclaimed and cult-adored horror films like Night Tide and Games, and c) directed episodes of Charlie's Angels and Dynasty? The answer can only be Curtis Harrington. Nice Guys Don't Work in Hollywood is a fast-paced view of Harrington's journey through the kaleidoscope of the movie business, acting alternately as personal memoir and cultural history from a veteran of the entertainment business. In addition, Harrington was living as a gay man in Hollywood and the book gives a rare peek into the hidden world of what was then an elite subculture. What sets this memoir apart is Harrington's unusual career trajectory. Starting in 1940s avant-garde heyday, Harrington made several deeply intuitive and evocative films which were heralded by the likes of Maya Deren and Anaïs Nin. Against all odds, he then became a Hollywood insider, working as assistant for the infamous Jerry Wald. Nice Guys Don't Work in Hollywood chronicles this strange arc with wit and campy style. It is both a serious study of film aesthetics, and a gossipy tell-all. Along the way, an unlikely cast of characters including Dennis Hopper, Christopher Isherwood, Shelley Winters, Marilyn Monroe, Stanley Kubrick, and Aaron Spelling share space with the machinations of the film and TV business making this a truly unique look at the Hollywood dream." OM: Advaitic Songs 2LP (DC 438LP)

"Where God Is Good was the first step in a more ornate and sophisticated direction for Om, Advaitic Songs achieves a level of composition that would've been impossible to foresee. There remains the singularity of purpose that is the core of all Om records, but no single reason can account for this comprehensive nature of their evolution. On this album the core primary sound of Om remains, yet everything reaches further and becomes more of itself. Whatever drone-doom camp that Om had previously been placed in has been decimated by the sheer imagination and expansive quality of this recording. For a band that has continually followed its own course, and stood alone in its sound and approach, Advaitic Songs for certain, is the band's most focused, progressive document."

HURLEY, MICHAEL: Armchair Boogie CD (FDR 603CD)
"Recorded with Jesse Colin Young, Armchair Boogie is Hurley's debut album proper, and the one in which he set out his stall as purveyor of charming, homely, folksy songs. It is essentially 14 songs about love and strange things -- werewolves ('Werewolf'), institutionalized English gentry ('English Nobleman'), and aquatic birds ('Penguin') all appear. Credited to Michael Hurley and pals, Young is among the friends who appear. Largely acoustic, it features little more than the sound of Hurley's guitar and voice and the occasional mouth trumpet. This is the highly sought-after album sounding better than it ever has. IASOS: Celestial Soul Portrait CD (NUMERO 049CD)
"Inspired by the infinitely numbered harmonies transmitted by Vista, a benevolent being from a distant dimension, Iasos broke ground for a new age of electronic sound manipulation. His was pioneering work -- done from a bohemian boat-slip home office -- on some of the first commercially available synthesizers and, on stage, into the kaliedoscopic heart of psychedelic-era concert visuals. As life-affirming and attuned to spirit as Iasos' soul portraits were, prestigious psychology departments heard in them the tones humans hear at the precipice between life and death. Before ambient and new age were so named and codified, the 'Paradise Music' of Iasos -- represented here by 13 selections transmitted between 1975 and 1985 -- brought Earth-transcriptions of a vast and galactic sound healing to a planet much in need."

CHAOS DESTROY: Lightning Strikes Twice LP (OESB 066LP)
"Taking cues from the wordless death-grind proto-metal of the first Obituary LP, Chaos Destroy somehow takes the fear-soaked brain of that tiny dude from the o.g. Speaking of music: inside this LP there is none. It's not just mere dribbling noise; its like a one dimensional terra-plane of cultural war of warbly Anime-frightmares clashing in a baby dumping dumpster in a Baltimore/DC area alleyway during a wretched static storm while the co-criminal on watch nods off on the job whilst Ipod'in The Swankys. On a Tuesday morning. In the Spring. I've seen pictures of this band: but someone pulled a horrid prank and replaced the bullet-belts and street punx ice grills with shorts, muffin tops and smiles. Huh? Confusion chaos is the fighting spirit: The LP begins with some semblance of structure and riffs but like a magician armed with 10,000,000 daisy-chained death metal pedals instead of card tricks: the cunning seems to come on too quick to warrant a double-featured extended stay, unless the members want to 'Fuck More.'" - Inzane Johnny Olson.

GUNN, STEVE: Time Off CD (POB 008CD)
"In the city we're all angling for quittin' time, laboring along and among the hours, searching and scheming for the sweet sound of those two easy words: Time Off. It's something you take -- or sometimes steal, like a thief or a baserunner -- but seems you can never get enough of it. It's regulated, rationed, and billed by volume, like water or electricity or ice cream. Sometimes you have to beg the boss for more, or even for a trifling taste. So let's make time! Let's roll the dice and get these old bones out on the road again. Steve Gunn's new album imagines the fugitive moments afforded us during time off, out, and away as occasions for dilatory investigations into our immediate environments and interiors. Time Off showcases the virtuosic guitarist and songwriter's oblique character sketches and story-songs, some of which, like 'Lurker' and 'Street Keeper,' portray specific denizens of his Brooklyn neighborhood. 'Old Strange' celebrates Jack Rose, a dear and departed friend and muse. Those contemplative studies frame Gunn's most affecting, accessible and articulate work of pure song-craft to date. His definitive statement as a songwriter, Time Off represents the culmination of nearly fifteen years of stylistic experimentation as a solo artist, a member of GHQ and the Gunn-Truscinski Duo, and more recently, as a guitarist in fellow Philadelphia-bred troubadour Kurt Vile's touring band the Violators. Gunn's first eponymous album with a full band, Time Off harnesses a core trio format to launch his compositions into new, luminous strata; the songs have evolved through disciplined trio interplay with longtime collaborator John Truscinski on drums and Justin Tripp (formerly of Aspera and Favourite Sons) on bass and guitar. Helena Espvall (Espers) also guests on cello. Steve's keen baritone voice features more prominently than ever before on these tunes, each of which feels both more rigorous and expansive than previous efforts."

400 numbered copies on 180 gram vinyl. Comes in a heavy red-velvet sleeve with engraved artwork and insert. "Local New Jersey demo release (200 made), beyond rare fantastic concept psych beauty, maybe five or six known copies; three girls, one guy. They tried to get attention from big labels but this never happened. They wanted him to sound like Blood Sweat & Tears. But this was not Greg's idea of music. The music has everything you need, like a wild version of early Moby Grape combined with New Dawn and C.A. Quintet, sometimes dreamy sometimes totally wild underground-psych, with female vocals and splattering leads, Titanic horns and distorted guitars. Sweet tunes turn into dark psych power. Totally stoned. A previous Little Indian release, but this time with insert, three bonus tracks, and many pictures."

SUN, THE: Tristan: A Rock Opera LP (SHAD 156LP)
500 numbered copies on 180 gram vinyl. Comes with a four page insert. "The time is anytime for this love story. A ship is dipping trough the sparkling blue sea, sitting on deck are Tristan and Ysolde. We have never seen or heard an album like this before. The music is stunning, the original package was outstanding, the whole presentation just beautiful. I am sure this album Tristan was not produced to sell. It came in a hand-laminated 10" tape box, a booklet with all the lyrics, and two 10 inch hand-cut acetates. The concept of the rock opera Tristan reminds me a lot of the two 12" acetates of Shuttah - The Image Maker Part 1+2. I am sure both albums were produced in an excellent studio with pro-musicians to help seal the deal for a release on a big label. So some promo guys out there should have some original copies. The music is electric folk with a progressive touch, much better than most albums we have heard from Britain. Male and female vocals, a wide range of instruments, great percussion and first class guitar, plus organ parts. Some songs are more acoustic, some electric. A well balanced mixture of an underground concept album which beats most other UK albums of the same kind. This album is a pure surprise. We just love it."

RAIN: Make the Day Break LP (SHAD 157LP)
500 numbered copies on 180 gram vinyl. Comes with a two page insert. "Rain, Norway's most well kept secret. But not anymore. After the first release of the Rain album Norsk Suite we all know how good this band sounds. Very much like Frank Zappa and The Mothers, Rain's complex compositions are based on the skills of modern classic composers such as Varèse and Strawinsky. As a strong influence they've mentioned Vanilla Fudge. Rain was Carl Jørgen Kiønig on drums, percussuion , Knut Heljar Hagen on organ, synthesizers, and vocals, and Åsmund Feidje on guitar and vocals. This album Make the Day Break was recorded live in a studio in 1974. After Norsk Suite, the music of this album takes you a step further. Four more years developing musical skills, great composition sense, and strong instrumental abilities. The title song of the album is just superb, the whole album simply stunning. We wish we had more recordings of this great band. But that is all there is. A big surprise they have never been released before. We love it and the music scene in Norway can be proud of this recording."

Folk and psychedelia held hands around the maypole while drug-inspired lyricism collided with traditional music, pagan mythology and spiritualism to create a sound and lifestyle that still resonate today. This delightfully-designed book overflows with sumptuous visuals and exclusive features -- no one has presented the work and influence of the String Band with such vivid colour and insight." SALTY DOG: Salty Dog LP + 7" (STRAW 009LP)
"Having formed during the height of the Zamrock period, Salty Dog was a three man band modeled after the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Wanting to base the band around the concept of the force of life, Salty Dog was chosen for the band's name because it is a slang term for 'sperm.' The eighth release on the Zambezi imprint, Salty Dog is one of the most obscure Zambian titles from the era having failed to achieve the success of some of their peers like Witch. The self-titled release is a combination of psychedelic rock, blues, and folk, with all English songs. Really good from start to end, essential for collectors of African rock and insanely rare as an original. Comes with a 7" of the non-LP single that was released before the album titled Sunday Morning Sunshine."

MOORE, R. STEVIE: Clack! 2LP (TPS 001LP)
2011 release. "In Fall 1979, R. Stevie Moore squeezed into a midtown Manhattan building at 56 West 45th Street, entered a tiny eighth floor jingle studio run by Englishman Tom Clack, and proceeded to bond big time with ambitious engineer Jon Child (who Uncle Harry Palmer had earlier sought out to assist in assembling the original Phonography album) to create one of his greatest collections of music. Still awestruck by his recent move north, R. Stevie first met Jon and Tom when the studio was utilized for compiling the Delicate Tension LP. With a cache of great new songs and experiments, he now was set, aimed to break down all barriers and collect audio styles galore in a 'professional' eight track environment, a major jump from mere tape deck home demos. The project extended well into the next year (decade). Those many sessions are gathered on this 60 minute masterpiece, simply titled CLACK! from which many of Moore's greatest all-time hits emerged." KOOL G RAP & DJ POLO: Street Stories CD (TEG 75526CD)
"Kool G Rap is simply one of the most masterful rappers ever. His body of work has served as a major influence on everyone from Nas to Eminem to Action Bronson. Kool Moe Dee once stated that G Rap is 'the progenitor and prototype for Biggie, Jay-Z, Treach, Nore, Fat Joe, Big Pun, and about twenty-five more hard-core emcees.' And that influence is in both his flow and his subject material. Though they would later have a major beef, it was Eric B that introduced Kool G Rap to DJ Polo. Marley Marl knew Polo and allowed the pair to use his studio one night in '86. Marley Marl was so impressed with the resulting cut, 'It's a Demo,' that he immediately bestowed Juice Crew membership on the pair. This of course led to appearances on Mr. Magic's Rap Attack program and the release of 'It's a Demo' as a Cold Chillin' 12" with 'I'm Fly' on the B Side. Soon after G Rap turned the world on its ear with his appearance on the ultimate posse cut, 'The Symphony' from Marley Marl's epic release In Control Volume 1. The world was now ready for Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's full-length debut, 1989's Road to the Riches. This overview pulled from Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's prime Cold Chillin' material covers all their best: from 'It's a Demo' through 'Erase Racism' with Big Daddy Kane and Biz, 'Rikers Island' (the original 12" mix is found here) through to 'Streets Of New York' these street stories are the template that changed the game."

FOOTSIE: King Original Vol. 2 - Grime, Dubstep & Bass CD (BD 015CD)
Second installment in the King Original series (first edition awarded 5/5 in Mixmag). Eighteen previously-unreleased Footsie instrumentals. Includes tracks that originally contained vocals by Dizzee Rascal and Maverick Sabre. With renewed focus on its producers, the grime scene -- now approaching its tenth year -- is in rude health. One of the artists leading the instrumental charge is Footsie, a veteran of the grime and dubstep scenes whose beats have been the toast of live shows and radio sets for years. In March of 2013, King Original Vol. 1 (BD 014CD) -- a compilation of classic unreleased material -- saw Footsie claim Mixmag's coveted "Dubstep Album of the Month" accolade. And having gone back, Footsie's ready to go forward. King Original Vol. 2 is an exploration of grime, bass, and dubstep with swing and bounce at its core. Beats used by platinum-selling artist Dizzee Rascal and Maverick Sabre start proceedings, ensuring levels are set from the off. A couple of classic unreleased Newham General beats -- "Violence" and "Move to the Beat" -- follow, which will undoubtedly please heads on the underground. Channeling that raw, uncompromising Newham General energy throughout King Original Vol. 2, Footsie shows just how adept he is behind the boards, drawing from decades of experience and fusing together forgotten elements of dub, jungle, and bass line to create fresh, vibrant sounds. On "Congo" and "No Matter," Footsie even pays homage to his roots and the reggae music that first inspired him to become a musician, with deep, chugging bass lines and sweet melodies that ooze real depth. It is in this mode that his ear for a great riddim really shines. The key to successful artist volumes is progression, and here, Footsie's development as a producer is self-evident, proving that he, and in a wider context, grime, will continue to lead the way in the underground for many years to come.

TRESHER, GREGOR: Nightcolors CD (BNS 003CD)
Nightcolors marks Gregor Tresher's fifth album. Through the clever combination of Tresher's trademark prime-time tracks ("Permafrost" and "Black Relief"), playful and dark electronic compositions ("Pelican Dreaming," "Demon Romance") and the typical Gregor Tresher anthems ("Nightcolors" and the previously-released "About a Good Place"), this album becomes a well-balanced listening experience. The new album embodies the signature Tresher-sound from peak hour -- techno-driven dancefloor bangers over darker electronica tracks that mark a connection to his earlier Sniper Mode works, to lush and cerebral soundscapes that shape the album into a complete listening experience -- and of course, there are the signature-sounding melodic tracks that Gregor's name has become a trademark for.

DINGER, THOMAS: Fur mich CD (BB 138CD)
Tired of quarreling endlessly with his imperious brother Klaus, Thomas Dinger quit the production of Viva, the second La Düsseldorf album, and promptly set off for the south of France. Frustrated and far away from home, his mind turned to the possibility of a solo album. An album devoted to his own musical ideas, free from domineering voices telling him what to do. Presenting his own vision in the context of a La Düsseldorf LP would have been difficult at the best of times. "I wanted to create something by myself, to make something just for me and nobody else," the third member of the band Hans Lampe recalls him saying -- hence the album title Für mich. He recorded the album in La Düsseldorf's studio in 1981, with Hans Lampe on board as co-producer and engineer. The six instrumental pieces, melancholic and elegiac in character, featured layers of synthesizer sounds, closer to the music of Wolfgang Riechmann or Michael Rother than that of La Düsseldorf. (The pulsating 4/4 beat associated with Klaus Dinger can be heard just the once. Two tracks are actually written in a 3/4 signature). The nearest points of reference in the La Düsseldorf canon might be the more measured "Rheinita" and "Silver Cloud." In the studio, Dinger and Lampe allowed themselves plenty of time to experiment. As Thomas wished, his brother Klaus stayed away from the recording and mixing sessions. Hans Lampe described the creative process thus: "There was a large balcony to the rear of Thomas' apartment, looking onto a vast, overgrown courtyard. A little park, a verdant oasis in the big city. We sat here often, listening to music, working on the LP and musing on life. Thomas and I complemented each other marvelously, bouncing ideas off each other. Our understanding was so great, the mood was so deep and heartfelt, we thoroughly enjoyed working together." Which is how the album sounds: simultaneously conveying a sense of somber depth and unfettered lightness, even playfulness.

The Cannanes have always done things their own way. Their first two albums African Man's Tomato (1988) and A Love Affair with Nature (1989) were self-released on no label at all, but the band subsequently became stalwarts of iconic '90s US indie imprints like K Records, Ajax, and Feel Good All Over. They began touring the U.S. and UK regularly, achieving the distinction of becoming one of the best-known unknown Australian bands internationally. Chapter Music released a Cannanes single in 1996 and the album Living the Dream in 2000. In 2002 their Trouble Seemed So Far Away album earned considerable Triple J support, and their clip for single "You Name It" was chosen to be the first song played on Rage to welcome in the new millennium. Howling is the first new album since Trouble, but admittedly the band have been distracted by side projects, recording, regular gigs and touring in Australia, the U.S., Japan, Mexico, headlining the New York Pop Fest in 2008, playing the UK Indietracks Festival in 2010, and various other pursuits. In 2012 a Cannanes song was featured in the TV film and DVD, Underground, about Julian Assange's early years, and the band even recently got to design their own limited edition Converse sneaker. But now it's high time to release upon the unsuspecting world some new recordings. New EP Small Batch, on the Cannanes' own Lamingtone label, got an ecstatic response earlier in 2013, and now the same line-up that recorded A Love Affair with Nature has regrouped -- in fact, the new album is subtitled A Love Affair with Nature II. Vocalist Fran Gibson, guitarist Stephen O'Neil and prodigal drummer David Nichols are the core trio, but Howling also features cameos from sometime Cannanes members James Dutton (Flywheel, Deep Country), Mia Schoen (New Estate, Sleepy Township), and Fran Bussey (Nice, Dusken Lights). After such a long wait, it's reassuring to discover that Howling at All Hours is as engaging and idiosyncratic as anything the band has ever done.

"Hiver's demo reached me shortly after I had bought their debut release on Vidab. I immediately fell in love with the analog-sounding deep techno of the Italian duo and asked one of my favorite producers to have a go at one of the tracks. Tobias. (Freund) totally nailed it, again. DEATHROWRADIO: Yummy LP (DIST 027LP)
Newcastle upon Tyne's Deathrowradio is Chris Tate and Paul Christian Patterson. The pair have worked together as d_rradio for the past 10 years, wooing hearts and minds with emotive adventures in sonic strangeness and melodic melancholy. The band's largely instrumental output has varied greatly in style, from stuttering folktronics to orchestral drone, via euphoric electro synth dub, all the while maintaining their uniquely distinctive feel. Bringing together elements of different styles and adding their own key ingredient is the Deathrowradio approach, as their new album Yummy shows. Having now dropped the underscore from their name, the duo are also leaving behind the laptops and synthesizers to dive headlong into a more confrontational live concoction of trippy guitar riffs and pounding punk drums; raucous and wild, yet underpinned by hypnotic repetition. Chugging and pounding along through just under 40 minutes, Yummy takes its cues as much from '60s garage rock as it does '70s glam, '80s skate punk and '90s techno. The result is yet another unique way for Deathrowradio to present their immersive and emotive sound. Less polished, more raucous and not a laptop in sight, Yummy marks the band's 10 year birthday with a bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.

VA: EDM B2 CD (EDMB 002CD)
As the title suggests, the music on this CD is electric dance music. Or electronic dance music, if you prefer. The music here is presented by a brand-new European imprint, set on maintaining a low profile but bringing together its favorite artists from various established labels as well as fresh new talent. All the music is made with computers as well as hardware synthesizers and effects. This is the second album in a 26 -release set and contains a diverse selection of styles, some of which you should have heard on the soundtracks of recent U.S. movies like Drive and the remake of Tron, as well as '70s Italian cult crime classics. This is music for dancing, too. Some have compared it to the music of Squarepusher, Underground Resistance, Drexciya, and Aphex Twin, and to labels such as Warp, Planet Mu, and Rephlex. But this is too rough an approximation. You'll find soundtrack music in here, futuristic club rinsers, ambience, and a clutch of analog workouts, among other things. Just under an hour of accomplished and refreshing music. Artists include: Heidi Lord, Compo Mendez, Jidomatix, Black Narcissus, J.K., Alain Kepler, +10, and TX81Z.

EOD: EOD Volume 2 CD (EOD 220CD)
This is the second volume of work by Norway's Stian Gjevik as EOD. Lovers of Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Drexciya, Legowelt, or Ceephax will find it easy to relate to this wonderful melodic acid bath. With its foundations in synth pop, Chicago house, Detroit techno, and electric dance, this album brings us a real taste of Scandinavia, rather than the all-too-common Swedish House Mafia. By Stian Gjevik from Norway, who also releases as CN and om 030303, WéMè, etc. This album's duration is 56 mins, speed 102-167 BPM. EOD astonished UK crowds recently at 2012's Bangface Weekender festival, guesting for Rephlex Records. He released Volume 1 in this series early in 2013 to high acclaim, e.g., #1 on Juno's electro chart on its week of release. The artwork of Volume 1 stated that the selection was to be continued and, indeed, here is the last part of the compendium: Volume 2. "My name is Stian and I've been interested in music since I was born. I've been doing electronic music for about 10 years, and these days I'm more compelled than ever to create new tracks and sounds to listen to. Music excites and drives me like nothing else, the feeling of creating something new that I can explore and enjoy is the best there is."

HOME BODY: In Real Life CD (FTR 102CD)
First LP by superbly-talented Northampton, MA duo, Haley Morgan and Eric Hnatow, who rewrite the basic DNA of electro-pop for their own nefarious purposes. They are capable of the sweet gesticulation for which the form is noted, and they do this with incredible aplomb. Staying away from the cute-ass rhyming-nada that so many of their peers use as stock-in-trade, when they opt for romantic aktion, they craft tunes that carry the weight of flat-out Buckingham/Knicks updates in terms of sheer perfection -- multi-part femme-voiced songs of longing that explode with deep, fully-immersed emotional content, set inside of perfectly-balanced guitar/key/percussion explorations. Outside of time or style, these pieces hew to Home Body's own standards of canonical pop-re-imagination. Even better are Home Body's darker, weirder songs on the second side, like "Hunt It" and "Ram," which head in oblique directions both lyrically and musically, creating purely original vistas of possibility. This album fulfills many desires, some of which you may have never even suspected you harbored. Classic.

JUSTICE YELDHAM: Popped in the Head All the Time Now 12" (FTR 108LP)
Justice Yeldham is the performing handle of Lucas Abela of Sydney, Australia. For the last five or so years, Justice has taken Iggy Pop's early '70s experiments with glass-as-instrument to whole new vistas of bloody ruin. Where the Ig saw glass as something merely to shatter and slash with (rendering old Ben Franklin's experiments with his "Amonica" quaint in the process), Justice uses shatterage as the capstone to a whole new quasimusical way of life. Yeldham takes salvaged sheets of glass and contact mics them, runs them through electronics, and blows the ever-loving shit out of them. Someone described him as "a trumpet player trapped in a two-dimensional universe" (to parse this reference, see Edwin Abbott's Flatland), and that sorta captures the gestalt of his performance style. Of course, the sound is something else again. Keeping the trumpet concept in focus, this record sounds like (your favorite trumpeter's name here) attempting to blow the fever out of Lou Reed shortly after he'd been bitten by a horse. Which means it has some of the same gaseous quality as most solo brass-qua-brass records, but it also seems have been processed through the diseased body of some former member of The Primitives. Originally recorded as part of the soundtrack to a film by Vincent Moon, Popped in the Head All the Time Now is sure to make 300 movie haters very, very happy.

GREAT VALLEY: Continental Lunch LP (FTR 112LP)
The third album by Brattleboro's Great Valley, who walk as equals amongst the woggly dream-pop giants from the charted region of the upper Connecticut River Valley. Like their brethren, Happy Jawbone (a member of whom surfaces hereon), Great Valley concoct a strange type of pop music, with certain similarities to musicians as disparate as California's Van Dyke Parks and Pennsylvania's Strapping Fieldhands, without yielding a single woof of their Brattleborian distinction. Blanche Blanche Blanche is also represented here by Zach Phillips, but Great Valley's take on the Southern Vermont ethos remains unique. Much of the sound on Continental Lunch has a pointedly ruralist base. Individual notes could be credited to ZZ Top or even members of the Capricorn Records cabal, yet when you engage with the entirety of their sound there is little chance of confusing them with anyone else. Their craft in creating a murky, muddled wall of sonic puh is strange, meaning it's far from usual. Instrumental passages have the crudeness of a carnival band, but these link with vocals bearing the lush potency on any mock-Beach Boys hybrid you could name (even the Rip Chords), albeit with a post-punk compositional modernity that buggers easy comparison. Every song on the album here shifts mood and mode as handily as Tura Santana shifted her hips in Faster Pussycat. There are odd blips of neo-electronic pop, which're immediately subverted by drunk sailor vocals. There are pieces of Matt Valentine/Neil Young vocalese that implode of their own volition in a shower of warm, swallowed sputum. There're blurts of patented 'Boro ganged chorus parts that refuse to stop acting drunk. If this is not one of the most low-keyed balloons of berserk psych blow-uppery, you should give me a list of other contenders. Because you are wrong. The more you listen, the wronger Continental Lunch is. What could be a higher compliment? Edition of 300.

Alpha Code is the project of a Milanese producer who was inspired by the emerging techno scene in Italy during the early '90s, seeking to translate the mind-bending sounds of Lory D, ACV and Sandro Galli. He was going through some belongings and found some dust-covered demos from early 1996. Inspired by the raw techno sounds on the demo, he returned to his studio and created these two driving tracks that resonate with insistent analog bleeps, firing percussion, swirling synths and brooding bass pulses.

Formed as Bakerloo Blues Line in early 1968, this short-lived trio boasted the considerable talents of Dave "Clem" Clempson (guitar), supported by Terry Poole (bass), and Keith Baker (drums). PARMEGIANI, BERNARD: De Natura Sonorum 2LP (REGRM 009LP)
De Natura Sonorum (1975): Premiered at the Salle Wagram in Paris on June 3rd 1975. A suite of 12 movements, divided into two series of six. "The first series comprises six related movements, usually organized in pairs, electronic sounds with instrumental and more rarely, concrete sounds: Incidences/resonances bring into play controlled resonances akin to sounds of concrete origin in a process that helps to expand the variable electronic sound sources. Here, 'incidents' are opposed to one-off 'accidents' in the second movement: 'Accidents/Harmoniques' ('Accidents/Harmonics'). In the second movement, very short events of instrumental origin change the harmonic tone of the continuum they interrupt or overlap. Moreover, the high notes are underplayed, which stimulates the attention given to other phenomena generally hidden by the melodic form applied to the instrumental play. 'Géologie sonore' ('Sound Geology') is similar to a flight over an area where different 'sound' layers come to the surface one after the other. When seen from high above, instrumental and electronic sounds seem to fuse. 'Dynamique de la resonance' ('Dynamics of Resonance') is a microphonic exploration of a single sound resonating through different forms of percussion. 'L'Etude élastique' ('Elastic Study') places together various sounds produced by 'touching' elastic or instrumental skins (balloons, doumbeks) or vibrating strings and a number of instrumental gestures close to this 'touch,' using electronic processes to generate white noise. 'Conjugaison du timbre' ('Conjugated Tone'), the last movement in the series, uses the same substance to apply rhythmic forms onto a perpetually varying tone continuum. The second series of movements draws its inspiration from concrete and electronic sources rather than instrumental ones. 'Incidences/battements' ('Incidences/ Beatings') is a reminder of the first movement in the first series, which then quickly moves into 'Natures éphémères' ('Ephemeral Natures'): an ephemeral play on instrumental and electronic sounds, singled out by their internal trajectory rather than by the material itself. 'Matières induites' ('Induced Matters'): just as molecular effervescence triggers changes of state, it seems that the different states of these sound materials can be generated by each other or through induction processes. In 'Ondes croisées' ('Crossed Waves'), the pizz vibrations interfere with somehow 'visible' water drops on the surface of a similar material. 'Pleins et déliés' ('Downstrokes and Upstrokes') can be listened to as the energies absorbed in the motion of bouncing bodies, while hollow 'bubbles' and points bring together some people's gravity and others' downwards movements. The work finishes with 'Points contre champs' ('Reverse Angle Points'). Here, the notion of perspective of the different sound threads weaving a kind of network, or field, traps the occasional iterative elements in the foreground and progressively absorbs them, giving more space for the angle -- and the chanted sound -- to grow." --Bernard Parmigiani; De Natura Sonorum whose title echoes Lucretius' De rerum natura, similarly explores the multiplicity of sound possibilities. This profuse work, with countless discoveries and dazzling intuitions, has influenced several generations of composers and remains a truly seminal piece in the experimental music soundscape. De Natura Sonorum, one of Parmegiani's masterpieces, has left an indelible mark on the classical period of electroacoustic music. At last, it is being reissued on vinyl and for the first time this includes the whole of its 12 movements." --Christian Zanési & François Bonnet

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS: Uncanny Valley LP (REC 105LP)
One of Australia's most fearlessly independent, individual, and inventive bands, Midnight Juggernauts are back bearing gifts with Uncanny Valley. In robotic engineering and CGI, the uncanny valley is a hypothesis -- coined by legendary roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970. He wrote in his work Bukimi no Tani Gensho: "I have noticed that, in climbing toward the goal of making robots appear human, our affinity for them increases until we come to a valley, which I call the uncanny valley." This "uncanny valley" is a phenomena in which human acceptance of robots grows more welcoming the more human their appearance, until they become too human, in which there's suddenly a precipitous plunge from acceptance to revulsion. The dark depths of this philosophical valley is a space the trio -- Vincent Vendetta, Andrew Szekeres, and Daniel Stricker -- have long explored. Running traditional rock instruments (guitar, keyboards, drums) through samplers, pedals, patches, and assorted effects, they pervert the familiar into slightly-off forms; robotic sounds made by human hands, with the waft of unsettling horror-soundtracks keeping things forever on edge. Since forming in Melbourne in 2004, the band has forged a unique path, pressing themselves firmly into the popular and unpopular consciousness, refusing to be bound by boundaries of genre, convention, or expectation. Eschewing an easy parochial path, Midnight Juggernauts have instead been international; taking their psychedelic Soviet-sci-fi pop to listeners near and far, around the corner and around the globe. Uncanny Valley is 43 minutes of warm-hearted cold wave, interstellar harmonies, early 1950s house, steeped in the darkness of dusty giallo soundtracks, audio spomeniks at once futuristic and rustic, a bold musical future envisaged through a soundtrack to a forgotten Eastern Bloc Tarkovsky film, sifting through the ruins of LPs past.

AHMED, RICHY: Rinse: 23 CD (RINSE 032CD)
Rinse: 23 marks the beginning of a new era for Rinse FM's mix CD series. Where previous installments have featured only DJs who regularly play on the station at the time of release, in the future the mix series is set to cast its net wider. Future installments will also feature DJs who are respected pioneers or important new artists within the sounds and scenes that Rinse plays and represents. The next edition in Rinse's iconic mix CD series will come from rising London-based house DJ Richy Ahmed. Moving from deep house into harder and more driving domains, Rinse: 23 captures the broad-minded approach and instinctive feel for dancefloor dynamics that have seen Ahmed's reputation as a DJ soar over the past few years. "The thing I look for in every track, that's universal in every type of music that I play -- I look for the groove," enthuses Ahmed of the music he's drawn to for his sets. "I like it jacking, I like energy." That attitude sits at the heart of Rinse: 23. Taking a gradual trajectory from the shimmery deep house of Outboxx's "Sunshine Mills" downwards into the driving, techno-infused grooves of Waff's "Body Ice" and Subb-an's "Cloak & Dagger," the crucial thread that runs throughout the mix is a compulsive sense of swing and undulating motion. It's very much a club-centerd mix, plunging straight into the heart of the dancefloor and drawing the listener along in its slipstream. Along the way it passes through a whole range of exclusives, including Mark Jenkyns' taut, thrillingly elastic "Mind Dust" and, a highlight, Richy's own, dubbed-out new track "Your Love." As one of the key names behind the London-based label Hot Creations, alongside Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, Ahmed is developing into an increasingly influential figure in house music both in the UK and further afield. Having grown up in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, in his late teens he fell in love with house music on a trip to Ibiza, and during successive trips became good friends with Jones, Foss, and a number of other DJs who have gone on to become well-known names within house music circles. He swiftly developed a reputation for his incendiary DJ sets, and he has recently been playing at progressively larger and more renowned venues. Other artists include: Demarzo, Les Cerveaux Lents, Jey Kurmis, Chaos In The CBD, Hot Natured (feat. Anabel Englund), Tom Shorterz, Danny Tenaglia (feat. Lula), Chris Lattner & East End Dubs, Kim Ann Foxman Creature, Vaal, Tale Of Us & Luca Cazal, Tanka, Michael Janson, Lake People, Phonique (feat. Erlend Øye), and Burnski.

TRAGO, TOM: The Light Fantastic (Album Sampler) 12" (RHM 004EP)
Tom Trago presents a 12" album sampler of his forthcoming The Light Fantastic. Featuring the dancefloor stomper "Two Together" which was co-produced by Steffi, "True Friends" featuring Breach on the vocals, and the non-album track "Avenido." Trago was keen to recapture the essence of his early work, and particularly the melodic warmth, kaleidoscopic chords and robust grooves that characterized his 2009 debut album, Voyage Direct. These tracks ooze a gleeful sense of fun, while retaining depth and definition.

DALY, JOHN: One More City 12" (SECRET 010EP)
John Daly's "One More City" is perhaps his most anthemic and euphoric track yet -- one that could almost be a lost early Happy Records DAT found in the studios of Mad Mike Banks (Underground Resistance), with its glorious, strong in-the-mix pianos, high-energy percussion and washes of Detroit-inspired atmosphere. "This Time" is a pad-drenched track with rich, warm analog production, a strong organ sound and a bubbling bass line. "Weightless" is fathoms deep with its very live-sounding acoustic bass line, skittering percussion, and forever-present pads.

BAGGALEY, KURT: Line of Sight EP 12" (STR 002EP)
Kurt Baggaley, formerly of electro outfit Scape One, has been producing raw, analog, electronic works since the '80s. Legowelt and Steffen Kirchhoff step up on remix duties, adding further weight to an already rock-solid package. "Line of Sight" sees Baggaley delve deep into analog explorations with punchy drums, spaced-out synthesizers and a stripped-back aesthetic. Legowelt's remix opts for acidic bass tones, raw drums and dubbed-out delays. "Touching Your Mind" embraces a more minimal state, with Kirchhoff's remix throwing in some off-kilter percussive elements, hooky melodies and growling low-end tones.

S.Y.P.H.: E.X. CD (TR 253CD)
Tapete presents a new album by S.Y.P.H.. "Just recently, it looked as if nothing would ever come of it. Vocal tracks that had been recorded were erased and the planned collaboration between the singer Harry Rag on one side and the rest of the band on the other side was cancelled because of the insurmountable trench between them. The culture of debate around the essence of punk, in which this band is rooted, is not atypical. S.Y.P.H. originally began as all their bands regularly disintegrated -- as Jens Rachut continues to this day. The only exception is Die Toten Hosen. So why not? What would be so wrong with that? Well, the album was almost finished. Everything was recorded except for the vocals, and if there is anyone out there in the current music scene who has understood, internalized, and moved forward with the heritage of this band, it would have to be Doc Schoko. What would have been an almost impossible task for almost anyone -- namely, not to try to replace the singer of a band, because that never actually works, but to further develop their style, based on their image and character. Accordingly, there is no sign of hesitation in his execution and his lyrics. The band's sense of playfulness and experimentation remains unbroken. The same goes for their wit and irony. The over eight-minute Krautrock instrumentals "Vorhof im Doof (Doof im Hof Return)" remain intact, as do the short pieces, which are by no means insubstantial. On the contrary, compared to the extremely compact "Erfolgreich erfolglos" (which translates as "Successfully Unsuccessful" and clocks in at 1:58) pieces such as "Japanische Hotels" feel like a respite. The Doc's lyrics are more psychedelic, different, clearly more Schoko than Rag -- even if his vocal style is rather similar to Harry Rag, except that his voice is deeper. This is an album which not only long-time fans of this band will appreciate." --Frank Spilker

HELLSONGS: These Are Evil Times CD (TR 255CD)
In 2011, a most sudden strike of serious illness suddenly ended a very nice era for Swedish lounge metal band Hellsongs. During the first half of 2011, the only moment of joy was the last waltz, celebrated with the Gothenburg Symphonic Orchestra. This, Hellsongs' final performance with their former singer, was recorded and later released as Long Live Lounge (TR 225CD) in 2012. Luckily, Hellsongs had signed up with an extremely nice and supportive label in 2009, Tapete Records. The staff in Hamburg kept cheering and soothing, insisting that there must be thousands of singers in Gothenburg with a fever for the road. In May 2011, Kalle started working with an outtake from the Minor Misdemeanors (2010) album. His feeling was that there was something good in it, it just needed a new treatment. The idea was to release "Stand Up & Shout" for free, as a tribute to Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.) on the anniversary of his passing. While working with it, he started thinking about the vocal duties and then came to think of My Engström Renman. They had both been acquainted since the days when Kalle worked at the kindergarden where both of My's kids attended. My was very happy to record some vocals for the track and they had a great time in the studio. During that summer, when more and more requests for live shows came, the idea of doing these with My presented itself. One show was played at the legendary Sommarmelad Fiesta in Gothenburg (with David Bäck on keys and Finn Björnulfson, of Håkan Hellström fame, on percussion) and it felt like things were starting to fall into place once again. Hellsongs spent both spring and summer on the road to much acclaim. Clearly, it was time to begin work on a new album. When listening to These Are Evil Times, you will hear Hellsongs sounding like the band always have, but you will also hear Hellsongs sounding like never before. When recording these songs they wanted to do so with a queer attitude, musically speaking -- not bothering about the correct way to dress them, or how they would fit into the old Hellsongs discourse. In the past they have consciously limited themselves, with great result, but this time they wanted to do something different. Beware, because here comes the full drum kit, here comes a song in German and here comes a song about long-gone and dead anarchists in Chicago. Thrown away is the old testament of lounge, please welcome the new gospel.

MEN AMONG ANIMALS: Buried Handsome CD (TR 263CD)
Men Among Animals from Denmark present their third album Buried Handsome. Since the release of Run Ego in 2010, the band has undergone perceptible changes. Formerly a quintet, the band now only holds three members, making their music more minimalistic, well-reflected and harmonic. The album was recorded in Janus' family summer cottage by the Danish west coast. The band ate splendid home-cooked meals and drank good beer, they listened to bands like Menomena, Vampire Weekend, and The Antlers and jammed 'til the early morning. It was in the middle of summer, the sun was shining, and birds were singing. In fact, the lead vocal recordings for "When You Smile" unintentionally caught a blackbird singing, which is now an integrated part of the song, giving the song a bit of extra warmth and depth. Where Run Ego was experimental, inquisitive, and bold, Buried Handsome is much more euphonic and mellifluous. Relying on the lax and melodic sounds of the sixties, the music smoothly captures the mood of a late summer evening. The lyrics are graphic, sharp and subtle, and together words and sounds define and fulfill the aesthetic melancholy that Buried Handsome is all about. Since the release of their debut in autumn 2007, Men Among Animals toured from the most southern part of Europe to the most northern. They've played Spain, Norway, England, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, and Denmark, including festivals Festival Placa Odisea in Barcelona, Reeperbahn in Germany, Roskilde Festival in Denmark, By:Larm in Norway and many more.

PHASE: On the Edge/Perplexed 12" (TOKEN 031EP)
The two tracks on this single -- a double A-side -- are both featured on Phase's new album and should give you a taste of what flavors to expect. "On the Edge" and "Perplexed" complement each other perfectly. The first is a raw peak-time cut, while the latter is a more atmospheric and hypnotic piece for the afterhours. Both pieces display strong and intense techno with an incredible sense for depth and detail. Few seem to master these qualities like Phase does.

DJ HELL: Kern Vol. 2 CD (KERN 002CD)
Hot on the heels of DJ Deep's inaugural Kern (KERN 001CD) mix for Tresor comes Kern Vol. 2, selected and mixed by Gigolos boss DJ Hell. Hell has a track record of releasing benchmark mixes, most notably the wildly eclectic mix for Belgian club FUSE in 2000, and 1995's X-Mix 5: Wildstyle, whose concept he feels is not far away from Kern Vol. 2. For Vol. 2 the Munich/Berlin machine dug deep into his vast collection to unite early house and techno with the new wave. Detroit minimalism is represented by Robert Hood's "Sleep Cycles," originally released in 1994 on the limited Minimal Nation EP, and Daniel Bell, who appears with an unreleased "Chicago Style" version of his evergreen 1992 track, "Blip." Kenny Larkin's epic "War of the Worlds" also features. It's an old favorite of Hell's and he describes it as "very emotional." New York's Joey Beltram makes an appearance as Code 6 with "Quad 1," an irresistibly dark slice of Nu Groove house. But Kern Vol. 2 isn't just about the old school and Hell has included tracks from new producers like Recondite and Jonas Kopp. Hell's background in harder-edge sounds predates the launch of Gigolos in the late '90s, and he welcomes its resurgence. Kern Vol. 2 also showcases some tracks that didn't get recognition the first time round. The churning, throbbing bass of Literon's 2006's "Machine 1" is one such track, one of the many projects of Dutch producer Gerd. Another obscurity is the Afro-acid groove of No Smoke's "Koro Koro." Hell spent a lot of time trying to trace the artist behind the project and offers the following observation: "They are from London and this was released between 1988 and 1989, but I am not sure of their identity," he says. Other artists include: Odori, Dan Diamond, Peace Division, Dark Comedy, DJ Yoav B., The Horrorist, QX1 (feat. HALO HALO: Halo Halo CD (UTR 057CD)
Halo Halo are three friends living in South London, writing a primal, hyper-melodic music that makes you want to dance into the mountains and throw a rope around the moon. Rachel Horwood (vocals, banjo, also of the band Trash Kit), Jack Barraclough (vocals, drums), and Gill Partington (bass, modded-keyboard) came together inspired by a shared love of the naturalism of folk music and the freedom of punk. Naming their band after a very colorful, refreshing hotchpotch of a dessert from the Philippines (where Rachel's family are from) the same random delight and faith in surprise is central to their music, shot through in clattering Technicolor by traditional forms of Filipino music like Tiboli and the mystical chanting and sacred percussion of the Ifugao. Halo Halo are not only reaching back to their own ancestry, but are tapping into something seemingly outside of time, parts equally magical and sonically enthralling. This last three years have seen Halo Halo release a well-received 7" single through the brilliant imprints of Savoury Days in Europe and M'Ladys in the USA, alongside several homemade CDs, leading to them playing countless shows, some more far-flung than others, including performances in Israel, the Republic of Korea, the Arctic Circle, and in support of kindred spirits Electrelane on tour in Europe. With this eagerly-awaited, self-titled debut album on Upset the Rhythm, Halo Halo have raised their game with doubled vocals, tripping beats, synth-weirding, drum thumps, banjo circles and journey-bound bass lines. With this album, Halo Halo have achieved a lot -- they've travelled far and have returned to their beginnings, all with an impeccable melodic hold that time cannot diminish.

GRECO, JULIETTE: A l'A.B.C. LP (DOY 682LP)
"By the time this album was recorded in 1962 at the A.B.C. club in Paris, French chanteuse, Juliette Greco was well on her way to becoming a household name in France. However, Greco embodied a new kind of singer -- not only young and beautiful, but also intellectual and bohemian. She was a good friend of the great existentialist writer Jean-Paul Sarte, and famously had a torrid love affair with Miles Davis (when the 23-year-old trumpet player first visited Paris in 1949). Every French boy wanted to marry her and every French girl wanted to be her. She embodied freedom, revolution, sex, and eventually became a cultural icon for the 68ers in France. Like Gainsbourg, she sang about the world she knew -- a world inhabited by drunks, pimps, and prostitutes, broken dreams and lost innocence, where tragedy is always lurking just below the surface." Comes on 180 gram vinyl.

WITHERSPOON, JIMMY: Feelin' the Spirit LP (DOY 683LP)
"One of the great blues singers of the post-war period, Arkansas native, Jimmy Witherspoon (1920-1977) had a slew of hits around 1950, with the most famous being a version of Bessie Smith's 'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do.' By the mid-fifties, however, Witherspoon's career had begun to languish, as the 'jump blues' style began to go out of fashion. However, Witherspoon's appearance at the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival restarted his career and exposed him to a new generation of record-buying fans. Feelin' the Spirit, released in 1959, hoped to capitalize on Witherspoon's newfound popularity (particularly with white audiences) by bringing traditional African-American spirituals into the national arena. While songs like 'Deep River' and 'Every Time I Feel the Spirit' would have been well-known to any African American church-goer at the time, they were not known among white audiences. Interestingly, Witherspoon chose the popular 'Randy Van Horne Singers' (who famously provided the theme songs to the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons) to sing backing vocals here." Comes on 180 gram vinyl.

PIAF, EDITH: La Vie en Rose: Edith Piaf Sings in English LP (DOY 684LP)
"Finally available again on vinyl after decades, La Vie en Rose: Edith Piaf Sings in English (featuring Piaf singing English versions of ten of her most classic tunes) was originally released in 1956, when La Môme Piaf was at the apex of her career, and a huge star among English-speaking audiences as well. Beginning with the classic and iconic 'La Vie en Rose,' written in 1945 (and all the more delightful for fans to hear Piaf sing it with her endearing French accent), and ending with the classic 'The Three Bells' ('Les trois cloches'), sung with the nine-piece all-male a cappella group known as Les Compagnons de la Chanson. A classic release by one of France's national treasures." Comes on 180 gram vinyl.

FATHER YOD AND THE SOURCE FAMILY: The Source Family DVD (DC 564DVD)
"Awareness of The Source Family, YaHoWa13 and Father Yod has been growing since their early 1970s heyday. A spiritual commune dedicated to a wide-ranging blend of eastern and western mysticism, The Source Family were very much a part of the infamous era of tuning in, turning on and dropping out in the late 1960s and '70s. The Source Family's celebrity-hang-out vegetarian restaurant, rock band, utopian commune, and beautiful women made them darlings of Hollywood's Sunset Strip; but their outsider ideals and controversial spiritual leader Father Yod provoked local authorities, leading to their dramatic demise. Still, Yod's spirit lives on -- in the hearts and souls of Family members, and in the music that he and the family's various bands made during his life, much of which remains in circulation. Additionally, new finds from the many hours of tapes they left behind are released every year. This incredible true story -- told largely through home movies and photographs maintained by archivist Isis Aquarian, one of Father Yod's fourteen wives, features a soundtrack comprised entirely of original Source Family music. The Source Family provides an unparalleled insider's view into the cult/commune phenomenon and wild social experimentation of the '70s; a penetrating and bittersweet examination of the joys of the free love generation and the contradictions that lay beneath the surface of their peaceful, easy feelings. In this, it is a uniquely Californian story as well." NTSC format.

PUBLIC SPEAKING: Blanton Ravine CD (FABREC 027CD)
"On his knees in a semicircle of electronic processors and percussive clutter, the singer quakes and moans, possessed with a passionate, paranoid vision. Public Speaking is the solo moniker of Brooklyn experimental musician Jason Anthony Harris. Utilizing found objects, radio, tape recorder, synthesizer and effect pedals, he constructs percussive, textural music for his deep, soulful vocals to croon over. Somewhere between Brian Eno and Tune-Yards, or Tortoise and James Blake, Harris' music explores pop music as organized sound. The Deli Magazine wrote: 'This is soul music functioning as 21st century meditation... [This] is what happens when an artist personally realizes the sound of his environment, and puts it to use.' His first full-length, Blanton Ravine is a lush collection of songs and sounds drawing on avant rock, IDM, ambient, noise, and R&B."

WEISS/CAMERON/HILL: Drumgasm LP (JPR 025LP)
"Let's get this out of the way -- for the casual listener, the musical window shopper, there is just nothing for you here. This music will confuse you, maybe annoy you, perhaps even cause a panic attack. Even reading about it will probably just confuse and annoy; so better just stop now and forget about it. Alright -- who's left? You are not 90% -- you are the music freaks, the true heads, and of course, the drummers! Because this record is a document of what happens when Matt Cameron, Janet Weiss, and Zach Hill - three of the most remarkable drummers of late period rock 'n' roll, whose collective roll call of bands - Pearl Jam, Sleater-Kinney, Hella, Quasi, Soundgarden,Wild Flag, Death Grips, Boredoms - have had a heavy impact on all levels of rock 'n' roll from full blown arena rock to the radical fringe underground, set up together in a room and just commence to explode. DIE GESUNDEN: Die Gesunden LP (MEDICAL 022LP)
"Die Gesunden (translated to 'the healthy ones') was mostly the duo of Mabel Aschenneller and Eschi Rehm (who sadly passed away on November 12, 2008). They were also joined on drums by Thomas Wydler (who later became known for his membership in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds). Taking influences from Kraftwerk, Roxy Music, and Eno/Bowie (who were coincidentally recording Low in Berlin at this time), Die Gesunden was one of the first Neue Deutsche Welle outfits. The self-titled LP was released in 1982 on Innovative Communication which was the independent record label formed by Klaus Schulze in 1978 after Klaus became very interested in the earliest Berlin Neue Deutsche Welle bands (such as Ideal, etc). Mabel was very involved in the Berlin scene such as promoting local gigs for the early Einstürzende Neubauten in 1981 and shows at the Exxcess club (with shows by the Cure amongst other bands in their infancy) which also inspired the birth of Die Gesunden. Die Gesunden did fairly well around Germany with one of the highlights being a tour in 1981 supporting DAF (Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft). The LP is a diverse collection of songs that display a jagged electronic quality showcased throughout with hints of power electronics mixed with synth pop. The opener 'Die Gesunden Kommen' is an upbeat track with bouncing synth leads atop treated percussion with whispered lyrics. The second track 'Leutnant Miller' displays some of the aforementioned power electronics harshness with pleasant electronic melodies and commanding vocals. 'Sometimes/Manchmal' is a slow and minimal track with emotional vocals and mutated synth parts with monotonous tones that are quite entrancing. Overall, the record is a very diverse listen and will surely appeal to fans of early Neue Deutsche Welle (early Der Plan) as well as proto-industrial and experimental new wave. At the same time, it is definitely one of a kind and has no record that it can be directly compared. Contains bonus track of cover of 'Waiting For My Man'. This reissue is presented on high-quality 180 gram opaque 'baby pink' vinyl. Features slight alteration and reinterpretation of the original front cover and redesigned back cover. Limited edition."

BODY 11: Youth LP (MEDICAL 023LP)
"Body 11 is/was the one-man project of Tim Stickelbrucks. Inspired by the late '70s/early '80s icons such as OMD, Human League, and Cabaret Voltaire, Tim wrote and recorded four songs in 1987 in his apartment and self-released the Mind 7" EP in 1988. Rather obscure at the time, the 7" gained cult status later in the 90s when collectors and word of mouth fans began seeking out copies of the record. Soon thereafter, the cost of obtaining an original skyrocketed on the collector's market. Medical Records is proud to reissue the Mind EP: four songs along with unreleased recordings created at the same time. The unreleased tracks were songs that were distributed only on cassette (to friends, etc) at the time. The tracks have been transferred from cassette and have been remastered by Jacob Jacobsen for this reissue. The LP embodies the essence of the EBM (electronic body music) subgenre that was prevalent in the late '80s. Though retaining a DIY/demo feel, the tracks have a warm synth/beat laced mood that will surprise and delight fans of this era who are not knowledgeable of Body 11. The opener 'Wasteland' definitely evokes a rougher/distorted vocal style over a sequenced Front 242 style rhythm with treated guitar highlights. 'Attack' is a dance floor cutter with industrial percussion and carefully accented synth leads and samples. The more hypnotic (but no less catchy) 'Hearts' is a slightly more emotional vocal style over popping synths and drum machine rhythms. The unreleased tracks seems to interface with the Mind EP songs seamlessly. Fans of early Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, late '80s industrial (Wax Trax, Nettwerk) and even early Skinny Puppy will find this collection essential. This is long overdue for reissue and presentation to the world. This reissue/collection is presented on high-quality 180 gram 'milky clear' vinyl. The jacket art was envisioned by Tim Stickelbrucks with inspiration from the original Mind EP front cover art. Features bonus insert with liner notes by Kurt B. Reighley. Limited edition."

AFFLICTED MAN: I'm Off Me 'Ead LP (PERM 036LP)
"I'm Off Me 'Ead is DIY psych punk (or 'Hippy Punk' as Steve Hall calls it) at it's finest, but don't just take my word for it. Heavyweight record aficionados such as Henry Rollins, Byron Coley, Tom Lax, Doug Mosurock, and Geoffrey Weiss are BIG fans. The idiosyncratic music critic, Byron Coley (Forced Exposure, Bull Tongue, Spin, Wire, Arthur), really lays it out there: 'Steve Hall's Afflicted (Man) project was one of the greatest mystery wobbles to come out of the Brit DIY explosion. Trying to figure out what the hell these records were about took years to unravel. We even thought there might be a Nurse with Wound connection when United Dairies released the Afflicted Man's Musica Box LP. We were stupid, but can you blame us? The slurred psych blues of I'm Off Me 'Ead were so unlike anything else going on at the time, it almost seemed like the whole thing had to be a put-on of some kind. There had been those earlier records, sure, this one felt way different. The concept of UK stoner-punks had existed for a few years, but their output had tended towards the arty end of things before this. There's a latent brutality to Im' Off that truly lashed our feeble minds. But maybe that's only because L.A. was awash in very good acid right about then. Still, it remains extremely difficult to place this music inside the contextual history of what was going on then. Jesus, I would have loved to have caught a gig or two. Unimaginable. I bought I'm Off Me 'Ead at the old Vinyl Fetish store on Melrose in '81, same year I finally managed to snag a copy of Randy Holden's Population II, and they were both records I'd play to anyone who dropped by our pad in Santa Monica for a listening session. The utterly fucked-up-ness of both guitarists never failed to astonish anyone who wasn't too wasted to acknowledge what they were hearing. And so it is.' We here at Permanent absolutely love this record and are incomprehensibly honored to be the label reissuing it on vinyl for the first time ever. It's been fully licensed by Steve Hall himself and painstakingly remastered by the total pros at Penguin Recording in Eagle Rock. The jacket artwork was graciously reconstituted and touched-up by Bill 'Trouble In Mind' Roe. The full-color I'm Off Me 'Ead inner sleeve contains a bunch of unseen Afflicted Man photos, an unpublished interview with Steve Hall and a fully authorized reprint of Chris Stigliano's article from Forced Exposure #9 (Winter 1986)."

KANDODO: k2o CD (THR 343CD)
"Simon Price is a master of creating music that is at once infinite and immediate. As a member of British heavyweights The Heads, he has journeyed with the band through two decades of brain-bending heavy psych. On k2o, Kandodo's second full-length, Price presents listeners with languid expanses of guitar and keyboard that are deceptively detailed and immaculately constructed. k2o is liquid psych: fully immersive and steadily drifting towards the horizon."

STOCKHAUSEN/LUCIANO BERIO, KARLHEINZ: Zeit(t)raume CD (WER 6749)
"Zeit(t)räume, dedicated to works by Stockhausen and Berio, features soprano Claudia Böttcher and pianist Jovita Zähl. Stockhausen's music box cycle Tierkreis is presented here in a version for soprano and piano alongside his Klavierstück IX, which exemplifies principles of his serial thinking. In Berio's Sequenza III, a wealth of emotional states is expressed, while the special charm that characterizes Quattro Canzoni poplari is rooted in the composer's fascinating interpretations of traditional folk songs."

GUBAIDULINA, SOFIA: Works for Double Bass CD (WER 6760)
"Written over a span of forty years, these compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina have become staples of the double bass literature. In Pantomime one immediately senses a certain theatricality, which is evoked by dramatic pauses and dynamic progressions. Originally written for cello, the Preludes were later arranged for double bass. For In Croce, Gubaidulina pairs the bass with a bayan, (a Russian accordion). The work was inspired by the composer's experiments with folk instruments. Bassist Daniele Roccato is accompanied by pianist Fabrizio Ottaviucci and bayan player Massimiliano Pitocco."
