MACHINEFABRIEK: Vergezichten 10" (N 031EP)
Rutger Zuydervelt aka Machinefabriek is a master of self-made sound and time-stretching, sensitively handling organic recordings and samples on countless releases, and regards preset sounds in an organ or a cheap keyboard as a tonal find, as a part of the cacophony of everyday life. These bontempi-rhythms plus the computer-stretched sounds of saxophone (Espen Reinertsen) and voice (Mariska Baars) are the base elements of "Vergezicht 1" and "Vergezicht 2." It is stunning how Zuydervelt manages to produce depth and meditative calm with this supposedly soul-less material.

SAROOS: Morning Way 12" (N 034EP)
Saroos are knee-deep in dub. The bass is a massive grounding force, underlying a dialog between exotic pop instrumentation and vocal samples. "Morning Ways" shows an eclectic side of Saroos never explored before. The minimalistic but playful loops and the slightly dizzying beat of "Henderson Island" (produced by Schlachthofbronx) leave enough space for a sparkling accordion line. "East," a collaboration with Fenster, is a percussive ballad with traces of recent UK bass music colliding with erratic guitar work.

WILLIAMS, BOO: Home Town Chicago 2x12" (AD 001LP)
2013 repress. 2x12" version. Chicago gave us house music. Beginning in the early '80s, as rough edits of disco tunes and primitive drum tracks, spun in dank clubs in the city by DJs like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Lil' Louis, Farley Jackmaster Funk, and Jesse Saunders, the incessant throb of house music soon started to spread around the world. With initial hits from Farley in the mid-'80s, the world fell in love with house; copying it, watering it down in more and more commercial strains. Attention on house music's birthplace quickly diminished, leaving the city full of kids brought up on the early raw sound of house. A second wave of DJs began to emerge, pushing a darker, more rhythmical strain of house that was currently being seen in Europe. DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Gemini, Cajmere, Glenn Underground, Roy Davis Jr., Paul Johnson, and countless others began releasing their unhinged take on the house sound, and began DJing in basements all over the world, but being largely ignored by the now-gargantuan house music audience worldwide. Debuting on Curtis Jones' Relief Records -- the tougher sub-label of his Cajual label -- Boo Williams dropped his A New Beginning EP in 1994 and quickly established his own sound. More ferocious releases for Relief followed, as did a 12" for renowned Dutch techno imprint Djax. Come 1996, Relief offered Boo an album release, for which he delivered Home Town Chicago, Boo's electronic love letter to house music. While still driving and heading straight for the dancefloor, Home Town Chicago showed a softer side to his sound, and is the perfect place to start Anotherday -- a new label dedicated to shedding light on forgotten classics.

URPF LANZE: Procession of Talking Mirrors LP (AUDIOMER 010LP)
The person behind Urpf Lanze is Belgian visual artist Wouter Vanhaelemeesch, who is mainly known for his large-scale ink drawings that offer a hermetic blend of weirdo characters, medieval iconography and surrealist decors. His artwork started gaining some attention a few years ago when renowned avant-garde lutenist Jozef Van Wissem started using Vanhaelemeesch's work to decorate many sleeves of his recorded output, including his collaborations with filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, noise legends Smegma, free-folk band United Bible Studies and fingerpicker James Blackshaw. Next to doing exhibitions in places like Tokyo, New York and Paris, his drawings appear regularly in zines and underground publications all over the world. He also runs the audioMER label together with designer Jeroen Wille and has provided artwork for records by Jack Rose, Robbie Basho, Mauro Antonio Pawlowski, Cian Nugent, Graveyards, Second Family Band and many others. Urpf Lanze is the moniker of his rather unorthodox solo guitar project, under which he has been playing for several years now. With an acoustic guitar that lays flat on his lap, tuned to unwieldy scales, he brutalizes the instrument in an oddly musical way. As if this wasn't enough, he lays down some vocal work that goes from ventriloquist-like whines and mumbles to deep and guttural grunts. The result is a rather unhinged and demented music. Imagine the rawness of Bill Orcutt, the more frightening sides of Loren Mazzacane Connors and the absurd stylings of Wilburn Burchette all wrapped into a Lovecraftian sonic nightmare. Procession of Talking Mirrors is his first full-length solo album. Recorded live on a 4-track tape recorder, these six tracks offer a mixture of Japanese folk music, free psych, scratchy Delta-blues recordings, damaged lo-fi and aggressively percussive fingerpicking. While some tracks may carry a more melancholy tone, others seem closer to acoustic death metal than any kind of folk music. However you may describe it, it is most definitely not a record for the faint of heart.

POLYSICK: Daydream LP (AUDIOMER 011LP)
Rome-based producer Egisto Sopor has been turning heads with a steady stream of most excellent releases. A CD-R on Legowelt's Strange Life Records, a tape on 100 % Silk, a double LP on Planet Mu and an ever-growing series of jams that are put on Soundcloud or on his Youtube channel. All of which offer atmospheric, acid-tinged techno laced with idiosyncratic touches. He has thus developed quite a cult-following among lovers of lo-fi electronic music who eagerly await his next grainy video, that feel like lost transmissions from an early '90s MTV broadcast. Polysick doesn't get out much and keeps a low profile which adds to his rather enigmatic standing. With his new LP Daydream, Egisto has created the perfect soundtrack to a midnight trip through darkened cityscapes. Starting out like a confused jam session, it slowly takes off and twists into uncanny shapes, conjuring up images of a futuristic nightlife that plays out under neon lights, with a feeling of dread constantly lurking in the shadows. This is techno that tells a tale; a storyboard that comes pushing through in muffled flashes. A chase scene through deserted back alleys, executed while hunter and prey are both in a half-awake state, stuck in an infinite loop. And when the ambient synth twirls unravel and a 4/4 pulse kicks in and tears through the dreamy state of consciousness, it never signals a reassuring release of tension. You might dance to it, but not without anxiously looking over your shoulder. 180 gram vinyl limited to 500 copies.

JOZIF: Balance Presents Jozif CD (BAL 007CD)
After 22 volumes of its much-lauded double-disc compilation series, Australian imprint Balance returns to launch its new Presents mix series, throwing the spotlight on the emerging talents that are shaping the future of the scene. One of the most exciting names to proliferate in the world of house music and thereabouts over the last five years or so, English DJ and producer Jozif is a unique talent. Born to a professional drummer father and a Royal Ballet ballerina mother, he grew up surrounded by music and slowly but surely worked his way into similarly focused endeavors. His highly musical take on house and downtempo 4/4 grooves as a producer is somewhat belied by his prowess as a dancefloor-driven DJ, but it's exactly this combination that makes him such an exciting proposition. Whether he's playing the big rooms of a We Love... Space residency, serving up wigged-out grooves alongside his Fist or Finger label partner Craig Richards, or soundtracking a sun-drenched day party in Shoreditch, he always seems effortlessly comfortable and accomplished. Artists include: Charles Webster, Glimpse & Martine Dawson, Burnin' Tears, Lake Powell, Yoko0, Steffi, Silicone Soul, Ian Pooley, Sam Wallace and Rob Shields.

BARTOS, KARL: Off the Record (Special Edition) LP+CD (BB 079LTD-LP)
Limited gatefold 180 gram vinyl version with 20-page booklet, plus CD. Well-known as one-quarter of the "classic" Kraftwerk line-up, Karl Bartos' new album is an audio-visual sensation. Lost for many years, some of his early music has been re-conceived and re-contextualized in a thrilling modern setting. Here's the story: during Kraftwerk's heyday, Karl Bartos wrote -- off the record -- a secret acoustic diary. Based on his musical jottings (rhythms, riffs, hooks, sounds, chords, and melodies) this is what he has come up with today -- 12 brand-new, exciting, timeless songs. Many of Kraftwerk's most influential rhythms and memorable melodies were actually conceived in his home studio. They would later be used on an unstoppable succession of hits from the Düsseldorf band as they ascended to the lofty heights of popular music culture. As a major contributor to The Man-Machine (1978) and Computer World (1981), Bartos has had a decisive influence on Kraftwerk's music. Rolling Stone author Mike Rubin says of these years: "there's something timeless and universal about their songwriting of this period." The Kraftwerk team went on to achieve worldwide success and cult status: in 1982 "The Model" went to the UK's number one spot. The track has become a classic in the history of music, along with "The Robots," "Metropolis," "Neon Lights," "Numbers," "Pocket Calculator," "Home Computer," "Tour de France," "Musique Non-Stop," and "The Telephone Call." Kraftwerk have been one of the most sampled artists of all time, and there have been countless cover versions of their songs. In 2012, Kraftwerk performed a retrospective of this repertoire in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Karl Bartos left the band in 1990. Subsequently, he became an independent producer and writer -- for his project Electric Music as a solo artist, and also together with fellow friends and musicians -- Bernard Sumner (New Order), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), and Andy McCluskey (OMD). In 2004 he co-founded the Master of Arts course "Sound Studies -- Acoustic Communication" at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), where he was a visiting professor, teaching Auditory Media Design up until 2009. For Off the Record, Karl Bartos has opened up his music archive for the very first time. He rediscovered and analyzed hundreds of tapes, piles of sheet music, and years of digital media. Inspired by his acoustic diary and adding his experience as a composer and producer, he has created 12 brand new songs -- written and performed with masterful skill. It took him two years to accomplish this original Bartos album: iron crystal music, vocoder newspeak, robot sounds, digital glitch, techno pop, catchy melodies, electronic avant-garde, roaring silence, futurism, and, of course, those rhythms. Rhythms of brutal, minimalistic impact as found on the much-sampled "Numbers" recorded three decades ago and described by Mike Banks of Underground Resistance as "the secret code of electronic funk."

Gary War has produced a highly-considered body of work that's mostly been described as otherworldly, intergalactic, acid-drenched, warped, deranged, often apocalyptic but mostly dystopian, as music journalists try to decipher his original aesthetic. Arguably amongst his best work, this double A-side release of "Zontag" and "Don't Go Out" (Sacred Bones Records, 2009) demonstrates the continually-evolving and dense language of War's damaged viewpoint, developed since his debut album New Raytheonport (SHDWPLY Records, 2008, reissued by Care In The Community, 2013).

VA: Kassidat: Raw 45s from Morocco LP (PT 2004LP)
Kassidat: Raw 45s from Morocco is a full-length LP that features six extended tracks from the golden age of the Moroccan record industry. After Morocco gained its independence in 1956, Moroccan-owned record labels sprouted and flourished in Casablanca. The inexpensive 45 rpm format allowed the record companies to release thousands of songs during the 1960s, creating a snapshot of the raw and hypnotic Berber music that thrived throughout Morocco. Powerful traditional styles were still alive and well at this time and untouched by international pop influences. Kassidat looks back at this era and presents it anew for audiences hungry for intense and authentic folk music. David Murray is the curator of Haji Maji (www.HajiMaji.com) a blog dedicated to the exploration of 78 rpm Asian music, as well as www.shellachead.com, a blog featuring 78s from around the world. He previously produced Dust-to-Digital's Luk Thung: Classic & Obscure 78s from the Thai Countryside, as well as the forthcoming Longing for the Past, a 4CD set of Southeast Asian 78s. In addition to collecting and researching old records, he is a musician and graphic designer in Oakland, California.

VA: Sorrow Come Pass Me Around: A Survey of Rural Religious Black Music LP (PT 3001LP)
A collection of spiritual and gospel songs performed in informal non-church settings between 1965 and 1973. Most are guitar-accompanied and performed by active or former blues artists. "Most records of black religious music contain some form of gospel singing or congregational singing recorded at a church service. This album, though, tries to present a broader range of performance styles and contexts with the hope of showing the important role that religious music plays in the Southern black communities and in the daily lives of individuals." --David Evans, from the liner notes. LP, 16-page 11"x11" booklet, tip-on sleeve, 16 photographs. David Evans is an ethnomusicologist and director of the Ethnomusicology/Regional Studies program at the Rudi E. VA: EDM A2 CD (EDMA 002CD)
As the title suggests, the music on this CD is electric dance music. Or electronic dance music, if you prefer. The music here is presented by a brand-new European imprint, set on maintaining a low profile but bringing together its favorite artists from various established labels as well as fresh new talent. All the music is made with computers as well as hardware synthesizers and effects. This first CD compilation represents the first of 26 releases in the set. The beats range from about 130 BPM to 180 BPM. This is music for dancing and more besides. Some have compared it to the music of Squarepusher, Underground Resistance, Drexciya, and Aphex Twin, and labels such as Warp, Planet Mu, and Rephlex -- but this is a very rough approximation. Such subjects of comparison vary enough already, without considering the bonus intensely ambient set you will find towards the end of the album. Sterling work -- bring on the next volume. Artists include: Submerged Pulsar, Black Narcissus, Rob Kidley, J.K., Jidomatix, Steel Erector, Co Mendez, Numerology Songs, Heidi Lord, +10 and Trevor Dags.

Mystiphonic is the fruit of two years of recordings at Young's Isophonic Sound Laboratory in Brooklyn, "comprovisations" which are more electronic than the previous EM releases, and yet this new CD retains Young's emotional life-long horn playing, a romance which began in his youth in Kansas City. Also carrying on from previous releases is the all-encompassing warmth and organic/oceanic feeling of Young's music, a rootedness that has been present since his early exposure to Charlie Parker, on through his San Francisco years and ever forward, linking past, present and future through deep American soil to his world-embracing current music, all united through his "Isophonic" philosophy. The Mystiphonic blend of electronics, percussion and horns is one of subtle beauty, sure to please Young's fans while attracting new admirers.

WRIGHT, WINSTON: The Liquidator Strikes Back CD (JRCD 049CD)
Winston Wright is an unsung hero from the Jamaican musical cannon. Although many might not know his name, you will have heard him on many records in your collections. He played that classic Hammond organ riff on the 1969 "Liquidator" classic, as part of the Harry J. Allstars, in addition to many other 1970s classics that bear the mark of his organ, piano and arrangement skills. Wright began his musical career in the 1960s as a session player and soon became an integral part of the Treasure Isle Studio house band that became known as Tommy McCook's Supersonics. He played on many of the rocksteady-era hits that Duke Reid ruled the island with between 1966 and 1968. His mastery of the Hammond organ made him an in-demand session player. He cut some great tunes in 1969 as part of Clancy Eccles' Dynamites. The 1970s saw Winston Wright working closely with Dynamic Sounds Studios' nucleus of musicians, cutting material for all the top producers of the time, including numerous sides for Bunny "Striker" Lee, which Jamaican Recordings has focused on for this set of tunes. From 1975 onwards, Winston Wright was a member of Toots And The Maytals' touring band, but this compilation celebrates his mighty fine studio work, adding his touches to many a fine rhythm as only Winston could.

MCCRACKLIN, JIMMY: What's That 7" (JBJ 1041EP)
Jimmy McCracklin is a true legend of blues and R&B, beginning his career in the post-war era and thriving through the '50s, recording scores of jump blues and rock 'n' roll classics. "What's That" was recorded during McCracklin's brief spell at Mercury Records in the early '60s, and is based around an infectious bass guitar and horn riff, with complimenting group backing vocals and a swaggering rhythm. "Part Two" on the flip is new to vinyl, meaning the irresistible groove of "What's That" now plays out longer.

BROWN, RUTH: Mambo Baby/5-10-15 Hours 7" (RB 101EP)
Two absolute classics from Atlantic's first queen of R&B, the one and only Ruth Brown. "Mambo Baby" rode the mambo craze like few other records could, hooking you right in from the shuffling bass and piano pattern of the opening bars. And when Miss Brown joins in with her typically self-assured, sassy, squealed vocals, any resistance is futile -- this is R&B perfection. As indeed is "5-10-15 Hours" on the flip, one of Brown's signature songs, and another of the finest recordings of the 1950s.

Cisco Ferreira and Ricardo Rodriguez aka The Advent & Industrialyzer's remix blends the relentless arpeggiators of the original with a futuristic, machine-like timbre.

MORR MUSIC (GERMANY):

DUMP: Superpowerless 2LP (MORR 115LP)
Gatefold double LP version. Morr Music reissues the legendary first album by the solo project of James McNew (Yo La Tengo) from 1993. "Some people complain that friends today are made with mouse-clicks. As if it was more personal in the '90s. James McNew, for example, became a good friend of mine in 1994. Never mind I hadn't even talked to the guy -- hell, he covered Jandek AND Silver Apples. We had so much in common! James McNew is a fan boy. If the name-drop list ranging from Albert Ayler to Young Marble Giants included with his first 45 didn't tell you that, the blazing in his eyes when a name like The Shaggs was uttered, certainly did. Yet McNew is not obsessed with obscurity but with music. When his debut album Superpowerless appeared in 1993, the choice of covers ranged from Sun Ra to that tune Audrey Hepburn serenaded to millions of movie watchers, "Moon River." While McNew's high, sexy voice might be "superpowerless," his ears certainly are not. It's been the intimate sound of a 4-track recorder that tied these different angles of his eclectic taste together. Yes, Dump was part of the lo-fi generation. Nothing makes that clearer than the bonus tracks on his follow-up album I Can Hear Music. Recorded during the infamous Dutch Fast Forward Festival in 1994 in -- naturally -- a living room, it contains all that was great about the few short moons of tape-hiss: collaborations triggered not even remotely by virtuosity (had Chris Knox ever played trumpet before that afternoon?); cardboard boxes as bass-drums; the victory of enthusiasm over perfection (have Half-Japanese been covered with more empathy?). The only thing that wasn't quite right about these first two Dump albums, was the format. But as justice doesn't know age, it's good to see these CDs finally being pressed on vinyl! They deserve it. After all, James is a friend. Did I mention he's playing bass in Yo La Tengo?" --Gregor Kessler, Hamburg, December 2012; Remastered by Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission Of Burma). Contains bonus material.

LUCY & SILENT SERVANT: History Survivors 12" (MOTE 034EP)
The History Survivors EP is a fierce collaboration between two of electronic music's most intriguing producers, Lucy & Silent Servant. "Dormancy Survivors" begins with a metallic rasp and opens out into a euphoric state. Odd bleeps rotate around the weight of the bass-line and strange atmospherics catch you brilliantly unawares. This is an industrial-strength peak-time track. "Victors History" is expansive and hypnotic. Pulling you into its loops, the track is littered with glimmering asides.

"Laissez-Faire Couture" instantly transports you to bizarre realms with midtempo funky beats haloed in swirling, celestial synth drones and angelic female swoons contrasting with strident Roland 303 twangs and unsettling, growling bass frequencies. "We Doubt (You Can Make It)" threads a male vocalist over a broken tech-house rhythm. DJ Sotofett's "Radio Mix" of "We Doubt" adds an urgent blaxploitation-flick bass line and Dresvn offers a chilled dub version.

2013 repress, originally released in 2011. Dinky's warm, technical house sound, underpinned by intricate rhythmic and harmonic elements, is a much-loved staple of the scene. "Take Me" is a wonderful meeting of thuggish house and soul-infused, feel-good energy. A surprise break leads to unexpected vibes and a brief encounter with some Rhodes keys action. "Polvo" is a psychedelic ride through more cerebral moments, possessing the power to truly lock you in. The extended passages of this breezy, garage-house hybrid highlight Dinky's instincts for dramatic timing.

GAMBLE, LEE: Dutch Tvashar Plumes LP (PAN 036LP)
Repressed. Dutch Tvashar Plumes seems to map the changes in Lee Gamble's approach to music-making over the last couple of years. From his initial exposure and subsequent immersion into jungle as a teenager, he soon began experimenting with structure and sound design, which led him to a more "academic" approach to "computer music." There were many self-imposed rules he adhered to during this time. These last few years he decided to break with that and make an intuitive venture forward. This record is the first real document of that. Lee Gamble started out as a teenager DJing on pirate radio and on the emerging jungle scene; however, his own approach to music has taken a more experimental direction. Exploring the outer realms of abstraction through digital synthesis/re-synthesis, Lee has described his current compositional process as: "The configuration of material (ex nihilo) via various digital synthesis methods, prompts further disfigurations and reconfigurations. What you then have left is often the detritus or debris of an idea. Phantasms of both previous and current musical, pseudo-scientific and sculptural influences are manifest as new material abstractions, created from the digital blank canvas. This abstraction allows several interests to appear in the works simultaneously." He is a also a founding member of the UK-based CYRK collective and has curated/co-curated several CYRK events. He has also produced and curated three radio series for London-based radio station Resonance 104.4FM and he continues to DJ. Lee has released his computer compositions on the Entr'acte label and has collaborated with composer John Wall and artists Yutaka Makino and Bryan Lewis Saunders. Packaged in a pro-press color jacket which itself is housed in a silkscreened PVC sleeve with artwork by Kathryn Politis & Bill Kouligas. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering and pressed on 140 gram vinyl.

POOLEY, IAN: What I Do CD (PLD 033CD)
Ian Pooley shares the next part of his legacy with his fifth album, What I Do, after a four-year hiatus. Twenty years into his professional career, he is regarded as both a cult underground DJ and established mainstream producer. As one of the only artists that walks the path between the two, his latest work builds on his past and delivers a polished body of work that sounds both classic and fresh. In the past, Pooley has scoured influences from around the globe -- Detroit, Chicago, Brazil, etc., playing with funk with an emphasis on the groove. Over the course of 15 tracks, What I Do walks a similarly tactile path, refreshing the listener on Pooley's full-bodied and engaging approach but realigning his signature sound. Following on from a critically-appraised release on Innervision, tracks such as "Compurhythm" and "Tale of the Big City" connect firmly with the dancefloor, but also glow with a timelessness not often found in modern day electronic music, while additions such as "Get It On" allow Pooley to experiment with slow hip-hop rhythms and stimulating frequencies. Pooley's vast collection of analog gear and wealth of experience result in a smooth finesse. Pooley is still more than capable of delivering polished productions, learned from his past as a major label recording artist -- "1983" featuring guest vocals from Högni Egilsson and the driving vocal of "Bring Me Up" featuring Dominique Keegan are prime examples. But the move from the major to the underground can be heard in the music with the synth-led journeys and crisp drum rhythms at the heart of this album. The shift from V2 to his own label Pooled Music for this album also firmly states an intention, a step that allows him to develop new artists. Six years since he left his home in Mainz for Berlin, Pooley refuses to surrender to the status quo. He has ripened into an artist unable to be second-guessed and capable of covering more musical territory than most can dream of trying in a lifetime.

Two more catchy Popcorn winners paired for your dancefloor delight. Dean Barlow, a founding member of vocal group The Crickets, decided to go solo as that group's fortunes floundered in the second half of the '50s. "Come Back" was one of slew of singles Barlow released thereafter, and is a jaunty piece of jazzy R&B, perfect for today's popcorn-influenced scene. On the flip side is Carole Bennett's "He's Coming Home," a cool, laid-back stroller with suitably sassy vocals, a snappy arrangement, and a great horn section.

KAVINSKY: Outrun LP (REC 086LP)
Nicolas Winding Refn's film, Drive (2011) operates on a level of cool that's hard to articulate with just words; it takes a snippet from the movie -- take the opening credits backed by Kavinsky's "Nightcall" -- to really grasp its effortless debonair. Since the film's release, this single's Youtube video has climbed to over 30 million views, and has been on repeat across an expanse of playlists, always fueling the after-after party with the slow burn of glossed synth echoes. Kavinsky is not all about "Nightcall." He died in a car crash in 1986, while driving his beloved Testarossa. He re-appeared as a zombie in 2005, with his 12", Teddy Boy. Since then, he has shown up all around the globe, playing his music to fellow humans. Crowds gathered to witness the miracle: despite being dead, Kavinsky was still alive. In 2007, he released his second 12", "1986." This is when his French robot-mates in Daft Punk invited him to join their "Alive Tour," and A-Trak put together an American tour. After discovering the world with his red eyes, Kavinsky retreated to his base camp to release "Nightcall' in 2011. Kavinsky now presents his long-awaited debut album OutRun produced by SebastiAn, including appearances by Havoc (Mobb Deep), Tyson & SebastiAn. 1x LP 12" -- gatefold glossy coated + 12" printed inner sleeve.

BLM: Sudden Death EP 12" (SECRET 008EP)
Secretsundaze presents an EP by London's Ben Micklewright aka BLM. Sudden Death sees the producer hit new heights with a more balls-y, right-in-your-face sound. "Sudden Death" gets straight to the point with its big kick, sharp hats and rumbling bass. Quite relentless and direct in its approach, the groove is offset by a chime-y brass stab. "Chemistry" is less techno and more house-y in its mentality, with a deadly acid line. "Brick" is a dreamy, lazy cut, working equally afterhours or at home.

FAMILY ATLANTICA: Family Atlantica CD (SNDW 042CD)
Recorded over the span of four years in London and Venezuela, Cuban rumba, Venezuelan tambor and tonada, Ghanaian highlife, Ethiopian blues and calypso have been soaked and infused with psychedelia and spiritual jazz. Family Atlantica release their eponymous debut album through Soundway Records. At the heart of Family Atlantica are three people from three different continents: London-born Jack Yglesias, producer, multi-instrumentalist and a veteran of The Heliocentrics, his wife Luzmira Zerpa, traditional Venezuelan musician, poet and singer with a magical voice acclaimed by Manu Chao and half Nigerian-half Ghanaian percussionist Kwame "Natural Power" Crentsil. Recorded while living in an abandoned vicarage in East London, the record contains three different generations of Luzmira's family as well as a cast of musicians from the wider Family Atlantic family. One of the guests on the album, legendary Ethiopian-jazz maestro Mulatu Astatke, adds a classic touch on piano to "Escape to the Palenque," soloing in his unmistakable flowing Ethiopian 6/8 style. Also featured on the record are Senegalese Nuru Kane and Afro-Cuban group Yoruba Andabo. Much of the record was recorded by the Heliocentrics' Malcolm Catto in their East London studio. In 2008, Luzmira traveled to the Sahara Desert in the south of Algeria to participate in the Fi-sahara Festival. While there, she performed with Manu Chao, who introduced her to the audience as the most beautiful voice to arrive to the desert.

ROMBOY & KEN ISHII, MARC: Taiyo CD (SYST 016CD)
Some 7,000 kilometers divide techno master craftsmen Marc Romboy and Ken Ishii, but that didn't prevent them from uniting to produce Taiyo (Japanese for "sun"), an album that is as much about the duo's shared musical vision, as the inevitable flicker of creative conflict that marks collaborations of this nature. Indeed, to Romboy and Ishii, the challenge of balancing these subtle differences lies at the core of album and where the most interesting and unexpected sonic ideas are spawned. Over seven tracks, the pair combines to craft an album of intricate next-level techno, simultaneously creative in its sound design and with enough drive to excite a dancefloor, proving distance is no barrier when two such superbly talented musical alchemists undertake such a collaboration. As electronic music talent goes, both artists enjoy stunning pedigrees and a sixth sense for production. Romboy has been active in the industry for almost 20 years, as an acclaimed producer, DJ, and label owner, first heading up prolific underground imprint Le Petit Prince throughout the '90s, before birthing Systematic Recordings, the label he owns and A&Rs today. Additionally, he's also released cuts on Ovum, Tronic, Simple, Herzblut Recordings, among others. Ken Ishii is inarguably one of Japan's most respected and innovative techno artists, while being a producer whose influence and reach extends far beyond the dancefloor. Such is his standing, that in 1998, he was chosen to produce the official theme song for the Winter Olympics in Nagano, while two years later in 2000, he was nominated for a Japanese Academy Award for his work on the soundtrack of hit Japanese movie Whiteout. Throughout his career, the artist has created music for video games, designed an exclusive 12.2 sound system that featured at the World Expo in Aichi, Japan in 2005, all the while enjoying a career in dance music stretching back 20 years to his seminal releases on R & S in the early '90s. Together the pair has created a work that represents the ying and yang of techno; West meets East; atmosphere meets groove-ridden dancefloor precision; contrasting, yet harmonious, and a pure trip for the mind and eardrums. Includes download code for bonus remixes.

YELLOW SWANS: Going Places LP (TYPE 063LP)
2013 clear vinyl repress; no longer includes the bonus CD. In April 2008, American noise duo Yellow Swans (comprised of Peter Swanson and Gabriel Mindel) announced their decision to split. The news was a shock to the noise community, not least because the band had become a regular fixture in the live arena -- touring incessantly and garnering a huge, dedicated following in the process. What the duo neglected to announce, however, was that a final album was already in the works, and while they would not tour together again, steps were being taken to finish off their crowning achievement. Going Places is Yellow Swans' conclusion as an entity, and sees the duo looking inward to create their most introspective work to-date. It shouldn't be surprising given the climate in which the record was put together, but without the constant touring, Swanson and Mindel allowed themselves to take their time on the record and allow the tracks to breathe somewhat. The resulting collection is distilled and reflective, retaining the grit and damage of their earlier work but adding layers of harmony and, maybe more surprisingly, pulsing rhythms. The improvisational, psychedelic washes that have always enriched their sound are tempered and controlled, leaving an almost Kosmische narrative. The drifting, subtle beauty that characterized 2007's At All Ends has emerged even further in the mix, and Mindel's guitar is allowed to play foil to Swanson's piercing noise. Comparisons could be made to Tim Hecker or even Brian Eno in parts, but Yellow Swans' harsher edge sets them apart from many of their peers. No doubt some listeners might be put off by Yellow Swans' noise background, but make no mistake, Going Places is one of the most haunting and engrossing albums yet to appear on the Type label. Swanson and Mindel prove, if proof was ever needed, that there is beauty in dense cacophony, and Going Places is the perfect way to close a startling career.

DEUPREE, TAYLOR: Faint CD (12K 1073CD)
"The clock is slowing and time is held like a breath as daylight falls from the horizon. Waking hours spin to a slow finale through a subconscious haze flecked with deep autumnal reds and quiet yellows. Memories gradually transform into moonlit ripples on a lake until the shadows emerge and slither across the surface of the water. I shift my body weight to the other side of where I lay. A distant radio hisses like wind through dead grasses as I move past crisp woodland branches that snap and crack as I seek a place of shelter. Hundreds of unseen eyes, hidden behind tree trunks and bracken, curiously trace my movement. I crouch down to rest as a hare approaches and briefly stops to tilt her head to make eye contact with me. I hold my breath and my feet and fingers sink into the decaying soil. My balance shifts and my tired eyelids open for a moment. Turning my head I see an opening close by partially masked by shadows. I count silently to myself and then cautiously venture out into this unknown open space. Here the snow-covered ground rises above me in ascending steps arcing through the plains. As my breath slows I follow the faint constellations of star clusters that hang buoyantly above me. I am softly breathing and almost asleep, unsure of where I am. Cresting the hill the sound of running water carries me back into the trees once more. I'm enticed by glistening droplets of near-frozen dew on the fallen logs that conceal the singing insects residing on the woodland floor. I pull tightly on my bedclothes as warm harmonic tones ease across my frost-kissed ears until broken twigs underfoot break my state of slumber. Back now, my pillow is familiar and warm. The tiny fraction of time between waking and sleep, with no distinct perception of reality is a moment to be held and absorbed for as long as possible. It is the ontologically fleeting moment of the present, as our heavy eyelids close and our pulse slows, that is the inspiration inside the music of Faint, the new album on 12k by Taylor Deupree."

MARSEN JULES: The Endless Change of Colour CD (12K 1074CD)
"The Endless Change of Colour exists somewhere between our future and the mistakes and accidents we've made along the way. It is a celebration of both the system and the unexpected. Marsen Jules' latest work is a generative music piece upon a single phrase of an old jazz record split into three audio streams. These streams are transformed into loops which break the original instrumentation down into sound resembling pure waves, harmonics, and overtones. These loops play to different time signatures to create phasing patterns that continuously move and dance around each other in a constantly-evolving lattice of sound. Despite it being based on a very strict and limited set of rules the music could, in theory, be endless and ever-changing. Here, the listener's discovery is a quiet and engaged one. Ripples and pulses set within a field of color that sometimes feels like water, sometimes like air and sometimes like glass. Electronic tones hum with warmth and the softness of slumber. The patterns are there, familiar to our modern ears, but they're not always what they seem. The wandering mind steers this one along more than the generative grid on which it was based and The Endless Change of Colour becomes exactly as its title suggests."

YSATIS & TAYLOR DEUPREE, SAVVAS: Origin LP (12K 2027LP)
"In the distance, they thought they heard a noise. This sound, that lay upon the hum, that those who lived here incessantly heard, crept into their consciousness as their breath slowed. The search was drawing on, time was becoming physical. The landscape was brown, a reddish brown, dusty and warm, and the smoke that was always somewhere off in the distance was still not far enough away. The noises of everyday always seemed like layers of different lives sounded off by the people. Each voice a mystery, yet vital to the whole, but most knew nothing of the lineage. Sometimes the voices called louder when the sun was high, making them long for the cool earth beneath the soil. Memory forgets small details, it fades into now, and you can see that in their eyes. Each step to get here was felt; the earth under foot, and each breath taken was part of the price to pay. Tomorrow will bring another experience, another mystery. But even the tiniest of ideas will set them out again; a hum, a crackle, a reflection. This is where it will continue as they search for the origin. Origin is the latest album from long-time collaborators Savvas Ysatis and Taylor Deupree. Released as a 12" LP Origin sounds quite unlike anything they've done in the past after nearly 20 years of releases together. Cryptic, noisy and warm, Origin searches for details in the layers."

You also get deep archival photo and a wander through some important MV listening experiences with your guide Dan Ireton, under a gorgeous cover painting of MV & EE at peace in the cosmic wild by Arik Roper. Delicious! Also in this issue: LA Record's Chris Ziegler encounters young Southern California psych-rock band Feeding People, fronted by the bewitching Jessie Jones; Stewart Voegtlin on what (or: who) made Melvins' 1992 beercrusher Lysol the most unlikely religious record ever built, with art by Stewart's Chips N Beer mag compatriot Beaver; Christian Ratsch and Claudia Muller-Ebeling lay down a rap about this planet's aromatic aphrodisiacs, with art by Kira Mardives; a lengthy interview with the remarkable esoteric cartographer David Chaim Smith by Jay Babcock, with massive artworks from his forthcoming Fulgur book, Blazing Dew of Stars; Gabe Soria chats with author Austin Grossman about the basic weirdness of playing (and making) video games, with art by Ron Rege, Jr. Plus: page after page of all-new color comics; columns by the ever-provocative 'Weedeater' Nance Klehm and The Center for Tactial Magic; Byron Coley and Thurston Moore's essential underground review column, Bull Tongue, now expanded to two giant pages; and more stuff too hot to divulge here." Cover price: $5.00; Format: Broadsheet newspaper, 15" x 22.75", 24 pages in 3 sections.

RANSOME-KUTI AND HIS KOOLA LOBITOS, FELA: Live at the Afro Spot LP (B 187LP)
White vinyl in clear PVC sleeve (ltd. ed. 500 copies). "Extremely rare early recording of Fela Kuti recorded live at the 'Afro Spot' in Lagos in 1966. After several years spent in London--at first studying medicine (!), and then switching over to music at London's Trinity College--Fela returned home to Nigeria where he began training to become a radio producer. It was during this time that Fela also formed his first Nigerian band, the Koola Lobitos (featuring Tony Allen on drums & Isaan Olasugba on alto sax), and began experimenting with a new kind of music that brought together elements of jazz (with three saxophones and two trumpets) and traditional Nigerian highlife music. Fela called his new sound Afro Beat and it would soon make him a star."

FOTHERINGAY: BBC Live in 1970 LP (B 188LP)
140 gram LP clear vinyl in clear PVC sleeve (ltd. ed. 500 copies). "After her legendary tenure with Fairport Convention came to an end in 1969 (during which time she was voted 'Britain's best singer'), Sandy Denny, along with Trevor Lucas (of Eclection), decided to put together a new band. In early 1970 Fotheringay, named after a FC song (and featuring the talents of Jerry Donahue and Pat Donaldson), was born. Despite rave reviews along with the release of one excellent album for Island that same year, the band quickly fell apart due to personal reasons. These BBC sessions, recorded in April and November of 1970--and featuring amazing versions of songs like 'The Sea' and 'The Ballad of Ned Kelly', from their self-titled studio album, as well as versions of songs like 'Eppie Moray' and 'John The Gun', that were works in progress at the time--are a welcome compendium to their repertoire."

AYERS, KEVIN: Live at the BBC 1970 & 1972 LP (B 189LP)
140 gram LP -- clear yellow vinyl in clear PVC sleeve (ltd. ed. 500 copies). "This valuable collection of BBC sessions, finds Kevin Ayers at the height of his career, fronting several different line-ups and playing an interesting and rare mix of material, most of which is not found on any of his studio albums. The first session, recorded in February of 1970, features an interesting version of Soft Machine's 'Why Are We Sleeping?' and the campy 'You Say You Like My Hat', backed by all members of Soft Machine, plus Elton Dean and Lol Coxhill on sax. The next two sessions, from May & June 1970, find Ayers backed by his Whole World band, featuring Mike Oldfield, and playing 'We Did It Again', from his days with Soft Machine, along with the whimsical 'Derby Day' and 'Gemini Child'. The final session features only Ayers and Archie Leggett on bass (who would also appear on Ayers' 1973 Bananamour album) playing Ayers' 1970 'Butterfly Dance' single along with the classic pop song 'Falling in Love Again'."

Again, there are only four long tracks, three of which ('Palm Grease,' 'Actual Proof,' 'Spank-A-Lee') concentrate on the funk, with plenty of Hancock's wah-wah clavinet, synthesizer textures and effects, and electric piano ruminations that still venture beyond the outer limits of post-bop." --All Music Guide

COLTRANE & CECIL TAYLOR, JOHN: Coltrane Time LP (DOL 728LP)
"Recorded in NYC on Oct 13, 1958, this album was originally released as Hard Driving Jazz (mono version) / Stereo Drive (stereo version) and the then 29-year-old pianist Cecil Taylor (not John Coltrane) originally got top billing on this date. This session is interesting because it is the only one Taylor ever did with Coltrane, and considering Taylor's status as one of the true founders of free jazz and Coltrane's status as jazz legend it is a kind of missing link in the history of jazz."

Not only was Hawkins (born in 1904) a pioneer of the tenor saxophone, transforming the instrument from an obscure novelty instrument into one of the primary instruments of jazz, he also accompanied and propelled the saxophone throughout its many stylistic changes, as jazz itself developed and changed in the ensuing decades." MINGUS, CHARLES: Jazz Composers Workshop No. 1 LP (DOX 883LP)
"The Jazz Composers' Workshop album, originally released on Savoy in 1956, is made up of two sessions -- recorded on 31 October 1954 (side A and tracks 5 and 6 on side B), and 30 January 1955 (tracks 1-4 on side B) -- that were part of Mingus' influential Jazz Composers' Workshop, a forum intended to give young jazz composers the opportunity to play and record their own compositions. The 1954 session -- a sextet line-up featuring Charles Mingus (bass), John La Porta (clarinet and alto sax), Teo Macero (tenor and baritone sax), George Barrow (tenor and baritone sax), Mal Waldron (piano) and Rudy Nichols (drums) -- was made up entirely of Mingus originals, with the exception of the 1925 standard 'Tea For Two.' Mingus' 'Body and Soul,' found here, did not appear on the original LP. The 1955 date -- a quartet session led by pianist Wally Cirillo, and featuring Mingus on bass, tenor-saxophonist Teo Macero, and drummer Kenny Clarke -- was actually intended as a showcase for four compositions by Cirillo, and featured one of the first, if not the first, jazz composition to be based on a 12-tone row, 'Transeason.'" Mingus intended the workshop as an outlet for young jazz composers, who might otherwise not be given the opportunity to record their own material, including Mingus' own compositions which, along with one composition by Teo Macero, are given center stage here. CURTIS FULLER JAZZTET, THE: The Curtis Fuller Jazztet with Benny Golson LP (DOX 885LP)
"By 1959, when The Curtis Fuller Jazztet was recorded, Detroit native Curtis Fuller was considered to be one of the greatest living jazz trombonists. Upon moving to NYC in the mid-fifties, Fuller became one of the hottest new names in jazz, recording as sideman on dates with Miles Davis, Sonny Clark and John Coltrane, (and featuring on Coltrane's classic Blue Train), as well as his first albums as leader for Prestige and Blue Note. Although tenor saxophonist Benny Golson and trumpet player Art Farmer would continue to use the Jazztet name from 1959-1962 without Fuller, this LP, recorded at the Van Gelder studio, represents the original Fuller-Golson co-led Jazztet line-up, with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass, and featuring two of Fuller's well-known compositions, 'Arabia' and 'Judy's Dilemma,' as well as Cole Porter's 'It's Alright with Me' (called the 'trombonists' national anthem'). Fuller would soon go on to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers." Comes on 180 gram vinyl.

Repressed. 180 gram vinyl exact repro reissue of Shuggie's sublime 1974 album, featuring the original cover art. "Information belongs to the mind. It can be gathered, coded, processed and decoded, and used for any number of purposes. Inspiration comes from the soul. It is an elusive spark, one that cannot be bought or sold, nor artificially triggered. It is a gift. That the two can be combined into something quietly exciting is proven by the music on this, Shuggie Otis's third solo album. There is some old (several of the basic tracks were recorded over the last two years), and some new (for the first time, Shuggie has assumed complete artistic control, handling almost all of the production and arrangements). Most present, however, is the sense and beginning of a totally new struggle for Shuggie, the thirteen-year-old who made his recording debut with the Johnny Otis show, and later came to national attention through the Al Kooper sessions, is a man and an artist now. He is creating in the seventies, a time whose conflicts are being shaped by information -- and the lack of it. One gets the feeling that even as the information changes, so will the inspiration." -- Winston Cenac (Scoops), from the back cover.

PIOULARD, BENOIT: Hymnal LP (KRANK 178LP)
LP version. "Hymnal is the fourth kranky album by Thomas Meluch under his musical alias Benoit Pioulard, following Précis (2006), Temper (2008) and Lasted (2010). It was written and recorded throughout a year spent in southeastern England and on the European mainland, during which the ubiquity of religious iconography and grandiose cathedrals became an unexpected muse. Raised as a Catholic but never especially pious, Meluch drew on this aspect of social history as the basis for Hymnal's 12 chapters. He notes a particular preoccupation with the ways that faith offers a sense of solace and belonging in an existence that inherently provides none, framed in a context of tradition, ritual and the notion of the eternal. Themes aside, Hymnal contains some of Meluch's most expansive instrumental works ('Knell', 'Gospel') and fully realized pop compositions ('Hawkeye', 'Reliquary', 'Margin'), making for a rich and dynamic long-playing arc. Also featured are string arrangements by kranky label mate Felix and guitar work from ambient maestro Kyle Bobby Dunn."

GINA X PERFORMANCE: Nice Mover LP (MEDICAL 017LP)
"Medical Records is proud to present the quintessential first album by Gina X Performance. Gina X Performance was composed of the charismatic Gina Kikoine (vocals/lyrics) along with famous German producer/musician Zeus B. Held and backing band. Released in 1978 on various labels including EMI, Nice Mover has been out of print on vinyl format since 1980. Zeus B. Held has previously worked with the band Birth Control and has recorded multiple solo albums as well. Nice Mover has been an internationally regarded electro/disco record with various tracks appearing on compilations throughout the years (e.g. Andrew Weatherall's Nine O'Clock Drop). The track 'No G.D.M.' (a tribute to famous gay actor/writer/personality) was a club hit on both sides of the Atlantic and remains a commonly heard track on better DJ sets to this very day. It is made up of an infectious slow driving disco-esque beat with perfectly aligned and arranged synth accompaniments. Gina's unmistakable and truly unique vocals and lyrics set this record apart from its contemporaries. Tackling controversial subject matter such as transgenderism, exhibitionism, and other fetishes, this record has left a deep mark on the history of new wave and electro/disco. The title track 'Nice Mover' is a cosmic sequenced synth hit and also has appeared on various compilations. The bouncing 'Be a Boy' is a high energy dancefloor cutter that illustrates the internal thought processes and daydreams of a female longing to become a male. 'Black Sheep' continues this theme and is a very catchy number with bonus sheep sounds to keep it interesting. The closing track 'Tropical Comic Strip' starts off with peaceful cricket samples and piano and builds into a bombastic production that is a fitting close to the record. Master recordings provided by Zeus B. Held and remastered by Lafayette Masters, Freiburg. Officially licensed from Mr. Held (KGBeat Productions) directly. This is a seminal work of electro/disco/wave and is essential for fans of late '70s wave-synth-disco crossover and the like. Original reproduction artwork is preserved on the front (one of the best record covers of the entire scene) and back. Presented on high quality 180 gram 'bone' colored vinyl in a limited edition pressing of 1000 hand-numbered copies. Includes bonus insert with liner notes and interview by Kurt B. Reighley."

MATHEMATIQUES MODERNES: Les Visiteurs du Soir LP (MEDICAL 018LP)
"Medical Records is very proud to present the much anticipated reissue of the seminal French synthpop classic Les Visiteurs Du Soir by Mathématiques Modernes. Released in 1981 on the famous Celluloid imprint, this masterpiece has been out of print since its initial pressing. Mathématiques Modernes was the project of keyboardist Claude Arto and vocalist/lyricist Edwige Braun-Belmore. Arto has also worked with French bands Artefact and Spions. Also, to note, the late French producer Jacno also worked on the Mathématiques Modernes record. This gem needs no introduction to the fans who have enjoyed the classics from this era. The record is a very diverse blend of new wave, almost progressive arrangement, baroque melodies, complex rhythmic structures, and plenty of so called 'cold wave' sprinkled in. The addition of horns was not a common finding during these times and is also represented on this eclectic record. Probably the most well known track, 'Disco Rough,' was a single as well as was later included on the popular comp, So Young But So Cold, Underground French Music 1977-1983 released in 2004 on Tigersushi Records. It is a staple in many DJ sets with its sassy lyrics and jagged synth hooks. The album features string arrangements which were somewhat unique to the new wave scene. Most notably, the track 'Jungle Hurt' displays the wonderful arrangements that interface well with the synth textures and percussion. The track 'A + B = C' has also been featured on various 'flexi-pop' comps and has a quirky melody accented by xylophone. The final track on the LP is an interesting medley of various tracks on the LP with interesting transitions. This LP has become very collectable for original copies and (when rarely found) is quite expensive. The original tape masters have been restored and remastered by Gilbert Castro of Celluloid Records. The sound quality is unparalleled. This project has been the collaboration between Mathématiques Modernes, Gilbert Castro, and Medical Records. The jacket features original reproduction artwork on the front and back. This record will surely need to make a mandatory arrival in the collections of fans of French new wave, early synthpop, and lovers of all things late '70s/early '80s. Presented on 180 gram grey opaque high-quality vinyl in a limited edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies. Bonus insert included as well with interview of Claude Arto by Dave Segal plus other interesting tidbits."

SANDRA PLAYS ELECTRONICS: Her Needs 7" (MW 042EP)
"A 7" release of primitive D.I.Y. electronics by Sandra Plays Electronics, a project founded by Karl O'Connor (Regis) while he was a teenager living in Birmingham, England in the 1980s. O'Connor, mostly known for his pioneering work in the techno field (as Regis, Sandwell District, British Murder Boys, and various other entities) as well as his Downwards label, began playing and recording his own music when he was 16 years old. He collaborated with friends performing in short-lived bands such as Family Sex and also recorded on his own as Sandra Plays Electronics. He was heavily influenced by D.A.F., Liaisons Dangereuses, Cabaret Voltaire, and Soft Cell, to name a few. He would eventually collaborate with Robert Görl and also Chrislo Haas in the late 90s. The tracks we are presenting here are two versions of the same song, 'Her Needs,' both recorded in Birmingham, England. The first was recorded in 1988 during sound check at the College of Food and Domestic Arts and the second was recorded in 1999 (from the Man Has Responsibilities session) at the Ice House. Pressed on heavy weight 70 gram ultra clear vinyl, the 7" is housed in a matte double sided printed sleeve. Limited to 999 numbered copies."

HEMPHILL, SID: The Devil's Dream LP (MRP 037LP)
"Multi-instrumentalist, band-leader, and composer Sid Hemphill (1876-1961) was for decades the musical patriarch of the Mississippi Hill Country. He and his band -- comprised of Alec 'Turpentine' Askew, Will Head, and Lucius Smith were fixtures at dances, picnics, and frolics throughout the right triangle formed by Memphis, the Delta, and the Hill Country. This LP features Alan Lomax's first recording of Blind Sid in August 1942, near Sledge, Mississippi, where the Hemphill band was appearing at a country picnic. By that date hundreds of commercial records had been made of the music of the Delta, and the preponderance of those were of or relating to the blues form, with guitar or piano accompaniment. Lomax's recordings were the first made of the Hill Country's local music, and contributed to a broader perspective of black vernacular instrumentation with their inclusion of the fiddle and banjo of the string band, the fife and drum ensemble, and the cane panpipes or 'quills. This music is wild & loose & of a style seldom heard. Includes liner notes insert by Nathan Salsburg."

A traditional Jola rhythm, fast and energetic, with tuned, talking and kit drums swarming across a skeletal down-home guitar somewhere between blues and disco and the Mboup brothers' impassioned plea for an end to division and bloodshed in their Casamance homeland. Then a more deeply dug-in, spaced-out funk, edgily spun from a Serer rhythm, underpinning Mbene's reflective song about parental selflessness. 'Sama Yaye', 'My Mother.' "Since 1987 I have been making duos for percussion with another instrument. The first was a memorial piece for Morton Feldman, For Morty, in 1987, with piano. Then in 1990 Rosas, commissioned for the pianist Marianne Schroeder and the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky. A few years later I met Robyn and began a working association with her that has now been ongoing for twenty years. Apart from a series of solo pieces, there have been duos, with viola (for Robyn and Kim Kashkashian), Violist and Percussionist (1996); with trumpet (for Reinhold Friedrich), Pulse (1998); with cello (Rohan de Saram), One Coat of Paint (2004) -- the title of a John Ashbery poem; and most recently (2012) For a Medley (a duo of percussionists, with Joey Baron). There is also a shorter duo with melodica, written for myself to play with her, Duo 7 (2007). The thread is percussion and the remarkable and distinctive playing and musicality of Schulkowsky, but also the other musicians, all of whom have extensive associations with her and are of course of special distinction themselves. The whole set, which now extends over 25 years, reflects my compositional trajectory over that time, and provides a series of exceptional, indeed, for me, ideal performances." Performed by Robyn Schulkowsky, percussion; with Frederic Rzewski, piano; Kim Kashkashian, viola; Joey Baron, percussion; Reinhold Friedrich, trumpet; Rohan de Saram, cello; Christian Wolff, melodic.

CHILD, ANTHONY: The Space Between People and Things LP (NNA 054LP)
"NNA is honored to be releasing the latest full-length solo recording from Anthony Child, UK electronic music legend perhaps best known for his forward-thinking techno production as Surgeon. A native of Northamptonshire England, Child has been at the helm as a DJ, writer, and producer of electronic music for nearly 20 years, creating works for reputable labels such as Counterbalance, Tresor, and Downwards. Aside from dancefloor-commanding techno, Anthony has also been creating a private collection of tone-based experimental works over the years, much of which has become the backbone for his latest solo album. The Space Between People and Things finds Child revisiting his collection of unreleased experimental studies from the last 16 years, collaging them into an entirely new framework. Using a sound palette reminiscent to his techno works, Child focuses in on the molecules within the sonic textures and frequencies, delicately emphasizing the negative space that surrounds them. These sounds are then intensified to form vast new worlds, enveloping the listener with bright, crystalline detail and clarity. These two side-long pieces seem to exist and not exist simultaneously, filling the listening space as an almost physical presence, to a point where they blend harmoniously with the air that surrounds you. The brainchild of intense focus and exploration, this record serves as an artifact that gives the listener a very personal glimpse into the mind of one of electronic music's most creative producers. According to Child himself, this record 'consists of location recordings, tonal experiments, and thought-forms from many different positions in space and time. It is the sound of the space between people and things.' Mastered and cut by Lupo at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin."

His flagship group, the Commands, took their AFB circuit-honed chops up to the middle of the charts in 1966 with 'No Time For You,' paving the way for 20 other soulful singles over Dynamic's impressive two and a half year run. Epstein's open door policy led to a diverse cross section of the population converging inside his studio on General McMullan Drive, as whites, blacks, and Latinos were swapped in and out of groups as needed. That melting pot mentality is well represented by the Tonettes, Little Jr. Jesse & the Tear Drops, Don & the Doves, Willie Cooper & the Webs, Bobby Blackmon & his Soul Express, and Doc & Sal. Compiled here are 21 of Dynamic's most intriguing sides, representing the first layer of a treasure trove of San Antonio soul."

JONES, GRANDPA: Everybody's Grandpa/Sings Hits From ''Hee Haw'' CD (OMNI 159CD)
2012 release. "In our 2nd volume of rare and magnificent Grandpa Jones recordings we find Grandpa at the very peak of his powers. Released originally in 1968 and 1969 these two LPs feature the apex of Grandpa's 'traditional' song writing, balladeer and instrumental skills. Augmented by the best players of the era (including close friend and legendary picker Merle Travis) these 32 tracks were originally compiled to coincide with Jones' newfound popularity as a member of the 'Hee Haw' troupe. It was an association that would bring great joy to many and incredible sorrow to Grandpa Jones himself. Hear the unique stage-painted Grandpa wax rustic, poetic and elderly on L.S.D, barefoot education, passive smoking, combat fatigue, universal love and much, much more! This deluxe collector's edition presents two of his very finest 1960s albums, remastered from the original Monument master tapes with exclusive scholarly liner notes, rare photos and a clutch of extra excellent LP cuts and rare 45 sides."

SCIORTINO, PATRICE: Percupulsions/Gymnorythmies 1 CD (OMNI 160CD)
2012 release. "Avant-Primitivism and baroque lyricism collide on Patrice Sciortino's unknown and underappreciated Percupulsions. Recorded late 1969 and released on the French 'Neuilly' library imprint in 1970, the album is delightful, mysterious and strangely accessible -- jarring percussion jostles with tape manipulations, abstract melodies, spacious disconcerting harpsichords and extended techniques. A few years later Sciortino cut the inventive Gymnorythmies 1, an album of polymorphous individualism intended to accompany contemporary dance/gymnastics (it even came with an instructional booklet). Both LPs are reissued for the very first with a raft of intriguing and rare extra tracks. Superbly remastered from the original tapes and presented with exclusive liner notes and rare photos from the composer's own collection. 46 track CD. All original recordings. First ever official reissue. 20 page full color booklet with exclusive liner notes and rare photos."

SHELLER, WILLIAM: Lux Aeterna CD (OMNI 164CD)
2012 release. "Written in 1970 and released in 1972, William Sheller's Parisian Love In/Freak Out Lux Aeterna is a psychedelic mass of staggering beauty and dexterity. Composed as a wedding gift for dear friends, the LP's twin themes of spiritual and global union are mirrored in its ornate orchestral and choral arrangements, rock drums, fuzz/flanged guitars and gurgling stratospheric analogue synthesis. This renowned and treasured rarity was originally issued in miniscule amounts and is officially reissued for the first ever time. Remastered from the original master tapes and presented with exclusive liner notes, rare photos and a swathe of rare 45 only tracks (including the full sitar-fuelled/beat driven score for the 1968 French film Erotissimo)."

ASH WEDNESDAY AND FRIENDS: Love And Other Numbers 1980-1984 CD (OMNI 166CD)
2012 release. "Electro-plated antipodean-chameleon Ash Wednesday's deep catalogue of minimal-wave and early-electro compositions form an incredibly impressive and desperately under-acknowledged body of work. From the deliriously bouncy new wave pop of 1980's 'Love By Numbers' to the Elvis-armed-with-an-analog-synth bombast of 1983's 'Boom Boom Baby', Ash joined or created notable minimal-wave/experimental ensembles The Metronomes, Thealonian Music and Modern Jazz alongside solo work. Stark, dark, euphoric, snide and wonky yet joyous and accessible, these experimental/electro (sometimes rockabilly-tinged) sides have long been cherished by knowing collectors but are largely reissued here for the very first time. Remastered, in all their pristine synthetic glory, from the original mastertapes and presented with exclusive liner notes and rare photos. Ash would later join with both Nina Hagen and Einstürzende Neubauten. But that is another story."

VA: Freedom Is A Hammer - Conservative Folk Revolutionaries Of The Sixties CD (OMNI 167CD)
2012 release. "In the tumultuous 1960s the powerful voices of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and others shaped the political and musical landscape for many. Less known, but no less strident and artful, were the folk singers from the other side of town. For the very first time the hyper-patriotic voices of conservative folk music mavericks Janet Greene, Tony Dolan and Vera Vanderlaan are reissued and reappraised. Janet Greene sings eloquently of the insidious communist threat ('The Hunter And The Bear'), Tony Dolan pleads the case for democracy in Cuba ('Cuba Will Be Free') and Vera Vanderlaan reminds us that the price of freedom is preparedness and eternal vigilance ('Freedom Is A Hammer'). RYDGREN, JOHN: Silhouette Segments/Cantata For New Life/Worlds Of Youth 2CD (OMNI 168CD)
2012 release. "At the very zenith of Psychedelia and Christianity stands the imposing figure of Brother John Rydgren. An ordained pastor of the American Lutheran Church, Rydgren laid out a heady trip of lysergic spiritual philosophy. Sincere, profound and yet deeply playful, Brother John's mesmeric baritone waxed poetic about the big questions -- Love, Sex, Death, War and Drugs (and God's place in all this) -- over a backbeat of fuzz guitars, sitars, avant choirs and go-go drums. From 1966 onwards Brother John broadcast his widely syndicated radio show Silhouette across the U.S.A (and Vietnam), speaking directly to the Hippies, Heads and Jesus-Freaks in an engaging flower-power-patter. His incredibly rare LPs Silhouette Segments (1968), Cantata For New Life (1967) and Worlds Of Youth (1966) were originally distributed only to radio stations and church groups. All are officially reissued here (in full) for the very first time. Remastered with copious extra tracks, exclusive liner notes and extremely rare photos, here at last is the true Gospel of Brother John Rydgren. 72 mind-blowing tracks! All original recordings. Features the magnificent 28 minute epic Cantata For New Life -- a psychedelic psycho-spiritual mass for choir, fuzz guitar, rock drums and Brother John! 24 page full colour booklet with exclusive scholarly liner notes, rare photos and ephemera."

KREFTING, MATT: High Hopes LP (OM 032LP)
"High Hopes is recording of music for cassettes. While the general tone is experimental, the structural elements of song are not left behind. Each side is a continuous statement comprised of brief motifs and repetitive strains bleeding into one another, coalescing into a cold narrative of half-remembered, slow mbiras, 78s of an orchestra in endless refrain, a confused piano, a vocal hosanna... While the pacing allows a certain introspection and the tape fidelity allows a certain detachment, direction and concision are not sacrificed. Elements from side A reappear on side B recomposed, and an overall tone of melancholy is maintained throughout. E.M. Cioran said, 'A heart without music is like beauty without melancholy.' Here... you've got it all." -- Greg Kelley

NURT: Nurt LP (SBS 001LP)
"It was January of 1972 when Nurt, a four-member progressive rock band from Poland, took part in a festival of avant-garde music. The group won a recording session at a professional Studio M-1 at Polish Radio headquarters in Warsaw. Along with the grand prize, their composition 'The Son of Fear' received an extra award for the best arrangements. Getting a pass to a studio was quite an achievement for an unknown band that would mainly gig at college dorms and jazz festivals. The local scene in Poland had a lot of talent at that time and Nurt was undoubtedly one of the main acts offering brand new concepts people were completely unfamiliar with. Stepping into a radio studio was one of the limited ways of having an album recorded in communist Poland, and could possible lead to signing a deal with a record label. Communism restricted the evolution of rock music in Eastern Europe and the media neglected the phenomenon that was seen as promoting the 'American way.' Artists had to pay attention to lyrics being censored. With valuable access to high quality recording equipment for only three days, the long-haired, leather jacket donning members of Nurt brought their own hard earned instruments and spontaneously used other available studio gear (including a gong) and spent every moment from noon to night composing their very first six tracks for the use of 'Studio Rytm,' the one and only show at Polish Radio to showcase this sort of music. The result is this self-titled album containing the group's very first recordings that have never been commercially released in 40 years, until now. This vinyl-only release (limited to 500 copies) holds a unique blend of radiant fuzz guitar, jazz-rock, and psychedelia recovered from the era of the East European Curtain and re-mastered by Sound by Sound Records from its original master tapes. This newly discovered classic from beyond the Iron Curtain is an essential '72 recording and captures rock at its purest, most progressive form." Edition of 500; includes download code.

BOOK OF AM, THE: The Book of AM Parts III & IV 2LP (LPS 122LP)
"Juan Arkotxa, Leslie McKenzie, and Carmeta Mansilla have joined forces with Will Z (of Cosmic Trip Machine fame) to finish the great project that was The Book of Am. As you may know, a few years ago Wah Wah released the book including the only LP that was originally released back in the seventies (part I) plus adding an extra LP (part II) which had been recorded in the same era while the book was being created, but the book itself hadn't been previously released. Now, thanks to the help of Will Z, original Can Am des Puig residents Leslie and Juan, plus original contributor Carmeta have joined forces again to finish what was left unfinished. The main body of parts III and IV is formed by those songs written back in 1970's Ibiza and Mallorca that never reached the recording stage. Will Z has also written part of the music, and has helped with all arrangements having in mind the sound of the original sessions and respecting the musical feel and spirit of the original Book Of Am recordings. It sounds amazing and will not disappoint fans of parts I and II. Lovers of the previous Book of Am know what to expect and will not be disappointed! Comes in a gatefold sleeve with cloth-like stamped spine that includes the lyrics to the songs and some photos and reproductions of original engravings by Leslie and Juan."

COSMIN TRG: Gordian CD (50 013CD)
Modeselektor's 50 Weapons label releases the second artist album by Romanian Cosmin TRG. Since that debut, the now Berlin-based Cosmin has toured the globe, taking his rusted techno frequencies to places like Fabric, Berghain and Sónar, at the same time as releasing more essential EPs on Rush Hour and 50 Weapons. The new album marks something of a new direction for Cosmin, however -- it's a much more intricate affair that deals in plenty of fuzzy texture, percussive energy and his trademark skimming bottom-ends, but looks outside the techno world for its influences. As the artist himself explains, "The title references an ancient myth, but describes the very contemporary, impossible task of discerning between real and replicated, authentic and contrived. Coping with facts, objects and bodies, the necessity of 'making it,' fear of failure, fear of 'not being happy' are today's topics, and Gordian is my attempt at an exploration of those issues." Starting with the deep, alien-laced ambience of "New Structures for Loving," it's clear from the off Cosmin's production has continued to improve and evolve since Simulat. Abstract yet heartfelt, it's followed by the more implosive snare rattles and crossing synth lines of the title-track, which sounds like a factory gone feral. Opposing light with dark, density with space, tracks like "Desire Is Sovereign" manages to be both propulsive and cerebral. One thing that ties the album to Cosmin's nuanced back-catalog is the gauziness of tracks like "Divided By Design," where the distant hum of radio frequencies turn your thoughts to Cold War-era transmissions lost in blizzards of snow. Though the heads-down surges of tracks like "Semi Present" sure will work on the floor, there's an underlying narrative that makes this album as suitable for listening on headphones. Non-standard melodies, otherworldly blips and a ruined intergalactic energy seem to course throughout, truly transporting you to another world entirely.

ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO DE COTONOU: Volume Three -- The Skeletal Essences of Voodoo Funk 1969-1980 CD (AACD 073CD)
Analog Africa presents a new compilation of 14 funky tracks by the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou from Benin. Following two previous Poly-Rythmo collections released by the multiple award-winning label, 2008's The Vodoun Effect (AACD 064CD/AALP 064LP) and 2009's Echos Hypnotiques (AACD 066CD/AALP 066LP), this third compilation is another proof that our ears are facing "one of the funkiest bands in the world." Starting in 2005, Samy Ben Redjeb, Analog Africa's founder and compiler, made several trips to Benin, where he dug up most of the orchestra's output recorded between 1969 and 1983: hundreds of vinyl records and a few master tapes, in a total of 500 songs. With all that material in hands and the astonishing richness of the group's material, choosing the songs proved to be a tough task. Therefore, it seems only natural that it has taken a few years for this third volume to come out of Analog Africa's sonic treasure trove. The 14 tracks presented here have never been issued outside of Africa and most of them follow the spirit and sound of the first volume, The Vodoun Effect, which was a selection of songs released by small and obscure labels from this tiny country which was once known as Dahomey. Some of the songs presented here were recorded using a legendary piece of equipment -- a Swiss-made Nagra reel-to-reel recorder and one or two microphones, in private houses or open-air gardens, mostly at night. And still, it would be somewhat difficult for contemporary musicians and engineers to achieve the stunning quality of raw sound and the atmosphere obtained in these recordings, even if they booked the most modern and expensive studios out there today. One thing that immediately catches the attention listening to this compilation is the band's steamroller-like grooves employed by Gustave Bentho, the mythical bass master, and Leopold Yehouessi, the fantastic drummer -- for many, Africa's funkiest rhythm sections. The power of these tunes is phenomenal and shows true craftsmanship on both the composition and the production side. "Houton Kan Do Gome," composed by Bentho, would have made James Brown proud. "Ecoutes ma melodie" is destined to become a classic late-night tune for the many amazing tropical and Afro parties taking place around the globe. "Pourquoi pas?" and "A O O Ida" would be the kind of sound The Meters would have created were they born in Benin. On December 17th, 2012, Melome Clement, the man who formed the all-powerful orchestra, passed away of a heart attack. The "boss," as the other band members would tenderly call him, will be missed, but not forgotten. The soul of the music he created has permanently engraved itself in the soil of Benin.

Having shed so much in his life -- girlfriend, home, manager, record company, publishing company, Richard went into the studio with a greater confidence than before, and the result is an album that takes the bare, brittle and "uncertain" bones of his past life and fleshes them out with true musical and lyrical conviction. In between working on his own material, Walters has also found time for other projects including co-writing "Eyes Out for You" on Joe Henry's latest record Reverie, collaborating with Grammy-nominated producer Morgan Page on his new album In the Air, as well as gaining an intense, yet rather surprising following in the contemporary dance world arising from the repeated use of his songs on U.S. TV show So You Think You Can Dance?.

MOTION SICKNESS OF TIME TRAVEL: The Perennials LP (BKEDIT 003LP)
Motion Sickness Of Time Travel makes fuzzy eyes for the dancefloor on her sublime debut for Boomkat Editions. The Perennials is Rachel Evans' eagerly-awaited follow-up to her eponymous LP for Spectrum Spools, channeling her celestial energies into concise and emotive ambient-pop arrangements on the cusp of progressive '90s trance. Taking in a handful of gorgeous songs ranging from pastoral instrumentals to strobing arpeggio surfers and sweeping mini bleep symphonies, she isolates a feeling or vibe hovering between the alien horizons of Tangerine Dream and Laurie Spiegel and the heart-aching cinematic yearn of Angelo Badalamenti and Julee Cruise at their best for David Lynch. From the Icarus-like trance ascension of opener "Efflorescence," she makes a deeply endearing virtue of divining unresolved tension between cosmic ambition and lo-fi willpower, defying its teasing gravity to ride pockets of thermal energy with siren-like chicanery on the radiant "The Reynard and the Vixen," while the neo-tantrik positivism of "Foggy Morning" consolidates the compatible dimensions of Laurel Halo and Suzanne Ciani with bittersweet effect beside the lushly heightened sensuality of "The Chord and the Centre." Ultimately it's as close as we've seen MSOTT get to the dancefloor, a direction we reckon she should continue to explore. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alechemy. Limited to 500 individually-numbered copies.

ORE: State 12" (CIV 055EP)
This debut from Ore features four original tracks with remixes from Darling Farah and Jon Convex. Prime-time Berghain techno functions are triangulated with Detroit in 1987, Birmingham in 1997, and London right now. The result is sumptuously-textured, asymmetric dance music. Richly harmonic, expressionist techno takes in pneumatic hi-tech funk, propulsive hydraulics and rarefied, low-frequency dub chords. Complete with laboratory-precise edits, cold, crystalline sampling and skeletal machine effects, Ore recalls Richie Hawtin's Plastikman while keeping an Afro-rhythmic swing reminiscent of Theo Parrish.

HELDER, ANA: Beating PC 12" (COMEME 021EP)
Comeme presents a 12" from Argentina's Ana Helder, who produces music well away from the regular comfort-zones of house, setting a new scale of dancefloor deepness. "Berberecho" features a trashy bass line and an elastic-band stretchiness aspect on the synths, with hi-hats, sub-bass and toms to make it more danceable. "Beatin' PC" speaks for itself, and "Voy a ver" invokes the deranged disco gods who rule nightly urban boulevard confusion.

ALLENDES, FRANCISCO: So Long Reptilians 12" (DESOLAT 019X-EP)
Francisco Allendes presents the 12" So Long Reptilians on Desolat. Kicking off with "The Magician," Francisco plays with a more experimental sound. The track's vocal sample conjures up a warped reality, offsetting the deep, emotive music. "Superwave Theory" is tinged with futuristic sounds underpinned with a chugging rhythm and a ghostly vocal loop. "El Regreso de los Abuelos" is a more delicate affair and he brings the tempo back up with "Ascension 101." Finally, "Amigos del Planeta" is a punchy track that oozes an after-hours ethos.

CINDYTALK: A Life Is Everywhere CD (EMEGO 167CD)
A Life Is Everywhere is an ecstatic mix of rhythm, noise, drone, texture, and melody. Simultaneously heartfelt and not for the faint-hearted. Within their self-contained world, Cindytalk continue the unique trajectory that has purveyed their career starting in 1982. This installment further explores the fearsome terrain that was initiated with previous Editions Mego releases such as The Crackle of My Soul and Hold Everything Dear. Throughout the six tracks on offer, the standard fair of music is run through serious level processes leaving, taking rhythm and sound to extreme limits while always retaining trace elements of their core. Ringing bells are interrupted by artifacts from shredded sound-matter, euphoric chords are swamped by chopped rhythms which succumb to an endless storm of electronic bliss. Utopia has never been so bold. The unique positioning of Cindytalk's output over a 30+ year period is a testament to the will to explore, unfettered by trend, taste and desire. This is unadulterated expression, a future music for those willing to confront the future as a viable option.

Lithuanian DJ and producer Vidis has a history of strong influence on the worldwide front. Together with his friend and partner Mario they are known as Mario & Vidis. The duo constantly rewrites house definitions, setting standards and pushing boundaries in all directions. Vidis' Get Physical debut is in the form of a compilation, but not like any you've heard before. Presenting: Silence Please!, the first-ever international compilation showcasing the Vilnius house scene and its most creative and inspiring personalities and moments in the form of musical tracks. "The compilation consists of 100% exclusive material," explains Vidis, "New and unreleased tracks from top Lithuanian house acts -- Mario & Vidis, Mario Basanov, Downtown Party Network, Few Nolder and Darius Vaikas. Unreleased remixes and edits of Fink, Jazzanova, Pompeya, Richard Davis, and Ernesto. I did my best to represent the finest we have talent-wise, to get as much exclusive material as possible, to get the right balance of unreleased and cutting-edge stuff with some already 'classic' moments of ours, to combine locally-produced stuff with remix work and collaborations with Swedish, American, Russian, British, French, and German artists ... It's not just another compilation representing some hot tracks of now or a collection of tried and tested hooks and melodies, it's a document and a statement in some respects -- the first proper representation of an emerging sound and scene from an unlikely territory. There were a few more names I wanted to represent and a few more tracks I wanted to include but they wouldn't fit genre, mood or tempo-wise. I like eclectic selections, but this time I wanted it to be a proper house mix with constant flow and integrity. Also something close to a real DJ set of mine."

EVERYONE INVOLVED: Either/Or LP + 7" (GUESS 111LP)
First-ever reissue of this UK private press masterpiece from 1972. Everyone Involved was a hippie collective formed by well-trained musicians, assembled by Alan Wakeman and Michael Klein (Solid British Hat Band) to record a set of environmental protest songs. Some of the members of this London-based recording commune included vocalist Freya Hogue (ex-Sunforest), guitar player Lucinha Turnbull (later with Cilibrinas Do Eden/Rita Lee), and bass player Arnaldo "Liminha" Filho (Os Mutantes) among others. Either/Or is a perfectly played and professionally recorded album (something very unusual for a private pressing). Top-notch psychedelic folk-rock/acid-folk with male-female vocals, flute, electric-acoustic guitars, bass, drums and some freaky/weird arrangements/effects. The album is now also famous for including "A Gay Song," which is probably the earliest known example of a pro-open gay song. The original pressing of 1,000 copies was never distributed or sold at stores, all the copies were given away for free (even to people passing on the street!). One of the members even buried a large number of them in a time capsule in the Amazon rainforest. Needless to say, the original album has been a highly sought-after artifact since the early days of obscure psych-prog record-collecting. This reissue reproduces the original embossed cover and includes repros of the two rare inserts, including the giant fold-out poster with new liner notes and info printed in the reverse. Also included is a repro of the Save Piccadilly 7" single released in 1972, featuring a non-album track: "The Circus Keeps on Turning." Remastered sound from the original master tapes. Limited release of 500 copies only.

WAREIKA HILL SOUNDS: No More War EP 10" (HJP 071EP)
Here are four new grounation furies from Wareika Hill Sounds -- hypnotic, thunderous, urgent, mystical -- with dubwise bass drums embedding the Light Of Saba veteran's gorgeous trombone classicism. The opener is a rocking kumina rhythm, with ring-the-alarm metal percussion and exhortatory brass; "Free the People" swirls some apocalyptic reasoning into the foggy, thumping mix. "Universe in Crisis" chuffs head-long down the grooves, before the anthemic "Chant" takes a step back from the fire, the expert drumming and lyrical bone-work in full effect.

VA: London Is the Place for Me: Afro-Cubism, Calypso, Highlife, Mento, Jazz -- The Music of Young Black London, 5 & 6 2CD (HJR 061CD)
At last, fresh installments in Honest Jon's acclaimed, much-loved series: open-hearted, bittersweet, mash-up postcards to the here and now, from young black London. As then, calypso carries the swing. There are four more Lord Kitchener songs -- in consideration of his wife leaving him for a GI, cricket umpires, a fling onboard an ocean-liner and West Indian poultry -- besides a hot mambo cash-in, cross-bred under his supervision, and an uproarious, teasing Ghanaian tribute to him in Fanti by London visitors The Quavers. Other calypsos range compellingly from the devaluation of the pound through jiu jitsu, big rubbery instruments, football fans, heavyweight champ Joe Louis and the sexual allure of English women police. The Mighty Terror contributes the woe-begotten, cautionary tale of his beloved Patricia's change of heart. Ambrose Campbell is back, with six more shots of prodigal, limber, melancholic, visionary West African highlife. Also the Rolling Stones favorite Ginger Johnson with a percussive Latin scorcher; and Mona Baptiste with some wonderful, soulful exotica. Jamaican mento makes its first entry in the series, with a brace by Tony Johnson: a drily witty drinking-song, and a love-letter to Marilyn Monroe. Also finally getting some dues, the path-breaking Latin-African-jazz experiments of Ghanaian drummer and percussionist Buddy Pipp, with spine-tingling playing by the great Jamaican saxophonist Joe Harriott. Expert jazz idioms course sophisticatedly through all the selections, which include a straight-up, South London version of Duke Jordan's "Jordhu," something from Dizzy Reece's soundtrack -- brokered by Kenneth Tynan -- to the British crime film Nowhere to Go, and a trio of magnificently hybrid, hard-swinging instrumentals led in turn by master-guitarist Fitzroy Coleman, Kitch's innovative arranger Rupert Nurse, and trumpeter Shake Keane -- named after Shakespeare because of his love of poetry -- from St. Vincent. The CDs are beautifully presented as miniature books, saddle-stitched, with 40 pages of rare, precious photos of the musicians and their social milieu, and in-depth commentary; the LPs are housed in gatefold sleeves with a full-size booklet.

VA: Mukunguni: New Recordings from Coast Province, Kenya CD (HJR 068CD)
Field recordings of the Mijikenda tribes, made in different spots in and around Mukunguni village, coastal Kenya, throughout September 2011: mostly healing music (especially for mental problems), but also love-songs, and spiritual contributions to weddings and burials; mostly in the Sengenya style which evolved in the early 20th century, adding pace, new Tsikitsi rhythms and extra drums to the traditional Dumbwi forms of the Duruma tribe. Besides the Sengenya drums -- bumbumbu, dahdahe, chapuro, vumi, ngoma -- there are lungo and dena (metal rings), kayamba (raft rattle), njunga (bells), ukaya (metal tray), bamba (metal guiro), and bottle-tops. Our album opener is solo dena, played to sound like a bat and heal the village sick, with the ear for frequency and timbre of a stringent minimalist. There are the piercing, reeded nzumari oboe and bung'o horn, sounding like fierce free-jazz improvisation; and two gently stunning marimba solos, with complex, overlaid melodies and rhythms, played in polyphonic accents, almost like talking drums. Most of the recordings here are songs, with strong tunes, robustly delivered, different solo voices leading the group -- to heal; to chase away Pepo Mlume, the devil who poisons the imagination; to get you on your feet, dancing; to celebrate dowry payments and weddings; to bring the Mijikenda cultural inheritance to life. Matatizo (trans. "Worries") -- was recorded spontaneously at a bus-stop, waiting for a ride: it's a Swahili love-song, with a plaintive female vocal performed to the accompaniment of five or so people rubbing their palms together in tight rhythmic patterns. Includes photos and the musicians' own introductory notes, snatches of translation, and brief track-by-track commentary.

ACKIN' (FEAT. M. AKAMATSU): Tembezi 12" (INT 024EP)
Ackin''s Tembezi is a richly-textured, intricate Afro-house track with emotive, melancholic piano improvisations backed by a solid jumping beat. Prins Thomas slows down the tempo for a rootsier jam with additional live guitar and bass improvisations. Detroit master and 3 Chairs member Marcellus Pittman takes us on a bumpier night ride built around a funky synth melody and pushed along by a short looped and dubbed piano part that delicately changes in placement and tempo.

The man from Bologna makes his second appearance on Internasjonal Spesial and it storms right into the middle of the night with the lethal tracks "Disko Frisko" and "Labyrinth Disco" -- titles that don't hide their intention nor inspiration. For both cuts he certainly took out a page or two out of the Arthur Russell's book of idiosyncratic disco, especially with the playful "lala" vocals. Both versions of "Soca Soca" keep it funky and eccentric in a percussive electronic boogie style.

The band here emphasizes the psychedelic side of its rock influence from the early Krautrock days of Amon Düül, Can, Faust, and Aphrodite's Child. The music here weighs a balanced conflict between basses, guitars, electronic analog synthesis and Tsoni's theatrical performance. GHOST CAPSULES: Ghost Capsules CD (CATSOLO 102CD)
Electronic band project Ghost Capsules can trace their beginnings back to a Bomb The Bass gig in Vienna. Here it was that Tim Simenon, touring the Back to Light album, met his support band that featured drummer Roman Lugmayr and keyboard player Georg Lichtenauer. The three hit it off -- so much so that Tim relocated from Amsterdam to the Austrian capital. Here the missing piece for the Ghost Capsules jigsaw was found in singer Laura Gomez, who Tim had booked to play at one of his club nights. Proof positive that there's no business as sociable as the music business.

RAMESH: Ramesh CD (PHS 009CD)
In 1970s Tehran, the classically-trained Ramesh played the serious, quiet marquess against Googoosh's langorous pop princess. Both singers made the papers every time they changed their haircuts and appeared on TV frequently. However, while Googoosh now runs a cosmetics company in Los Angeles, they say Ramesh was killed in the political turmoil of the late '70s because she was a lesbian. Nobody knows for sure. What we do know is that she was a funky queen whose rich voice sits like a fat mink coat, twirling its melancholy way around long-necked lutes, backed by flurries of frame and goblet drums. And the sleazy, Western brass, strings, and synths are here too, slathered across rare singles for your shameless dancing pleasure. Welcome to the unpredictable world of pre-revolutionary Iranian pop music. CD and LP come with insert/booklet including extensive liner notes and pictures.

VA: Sedayeh Del CD (PHS 010CD)
Pharaway Sounds presents the fourth volume in a series of compilations highlighting fiercely rare 45s from Tehran's pre-revolutionary golden age. Vivacious ladies with sassy Dorothy Hamill haircuts and skin-bearing pantsuits were once plastered across Tehran's newsstands. Those gorgeous sirens and their hunky male counterparts made all the teens sway to hand drums that boinked in 6/8 time. Plush brass and string arrangements took their cues from Latin grooves, psychedelic guitars, ritzy soundtracks, and sugary pop from the West. Within months of the 1979 Islamic revolution, pop music was labeled a symbol of the previous regime and became illegal overnight. In those same months, it also became illegal for women to be in public without conforming to the hijab dress code. By hook and crook, these little round records survived, and they attest to a time when Tehran's homegrown and exiled populations would have been united in an easygoing love for funk bass and buzzing synthesizers. Hear the tunes that rivaled the hits of Googoosh and Kourosh by singers who only recorded a few precious singles, but don't think for a minute that Tehran's nightingales have run out of surprises for your ears. The discoveries are just beginning.

DAWSON, RICHARD: The Magic Bridge CD (PTCD 003CD)
Richard Dawson has been a much-loved musical spectacle in his native Newcastle for many years now, a skewed troubadour who sings and plays guitar with a rare intensity and a very singular style. Beguiled northern audiences have long awaited the arrival of recordings that capture Dawson's genius, and it has finally arrived with his album The Magic Bridge, a 10-song collection out on CD (Pink Triangle) and double 12" vinyl (Box Records). Dawson's music is a collision of opposites -- his hoarsely cracking voice suddenly rising to a magical soar that's been compared to Tim Buckley, John Martyn, and Richard Youngs, while his battered acoustic guitar veers from stumble to sublime in a way that can recall Sir Richard Bishop or Captain Beefheart. The listener is drawn in carefully but irresistibly from the instrumental opener "Juniper Berries Float Down the Stream," which creeps in falteringly but grows and envelops before you realize it's happened and you're gripped. By track two and the arrival of his skyward voice (not to mention its beautifully tender conclusion) and Dawson has you under his spell.

VECTOR LOVERS: iPhonica CD (SOMA 101CD)
This is Martin Wheeler aka Vector Lovers' first full-length release since 2011's compilation Electrospective, featuring 16 new tracks from the electro-ambient producer. Although marking a return to the synthetic melodies and "Kraftwerk-in-Tokyo" influences of Vector Lovers' eponymous 2003 debut, this album takes a strikingly different route in terms of its production. As the title suggests, iPhonica was composed, mixed and produced entirely on Martin's iPhone 4. Developed over a period of 10 months, the album was made with nothing more than an iPhone and a pair of Sennheiser HD25 headphones. Numerous locations would stand in as makeshift recording venues, including train carriages, a doctor's waiting room, cafes in Berlin, off the beaten track on the Yorkshire moors, and Martin's back garden. Blip Interactive's Nanostudio app became Martin's weapon of choice for synthesizing, sampling and composing the 16 tracks that make up iPhonica. This album celebrates 10 years of the artist's Vector Lovers project and more solemnly marks the end of it also.

DUR-DUR BAND: Volume 5 CD (ATFA 004CD)
"Dur-Dur Band emerged in the 1980s, during a time when Somalia's contribution to the creative culture in the Horn of Africa was visible and abundant. Seeking inspiration outside the impressive array of Somali traditional music that was encouraged at the time, everyone from Michael Jackson and Phil Collins to Bob Marley and Santana were fair game. This recording, which was remastered from a cassette copy source, is a document of Dur-Dur Band after establishing itself as one of the most popular bands in Mogadishu. The challenge of locating a complete long-player from this era is evidenced by the fidelity of this recording. However, the complex, soulful music penetrates the hiss. In a country that has been disrupted by civil war, heated clan divisions and security concerns, music and the arts has suffered from stagnation in recent years. Incidentally, more than ten years after Volume 5 (1987) was recorded at Radio Mogadishu, the state-run broadcaster was the only station in Somalia to resist the ban on music briefly enacted by Al-Shabab. Dur-Dur Band is a powerful and illustrative lens through which to appreciate the incredible sounds in Somalia before the country's stability took a turn."

JERUSALEM IN MY HEART: Mo7it Al-Mo7it CD (CST 093CD)
"Jerusalem in My Heart (JIMH) has been a live audio-visual happening since 2005, with Montréal-based producer and musician Radwan Ghazi Moumneh at its core. Moumneh is a Lebanese national who has spent a large part of his adult life in Canada and has been a fixture of the Montréal independent music community from his early days as guitarist in various notable '90s hardcore bands to his tireless activity as a sound engineer and producer over the last decade. With performances occurring one to three times per year, no two JIMH events have ever been the same, with Moumneh's vocals and purposefully blown-out sonic sensibility as the single constant. JIMH has always been an immersive sonic and visual live experience; on the musical side, an evolving effort to forge a modern experimental Arabic music that weds melismatic singing in classical Arabic modes to electronic compositions with a punk-rock production sensibility. Mo7it Al-Mo7it, a unique and profoundly emotive album of contemporary Arabic music, captures and conveys all of this."

INVADERS: Conquering Lion 7" (DKR 136EP)
"A great reggae mystery, now solved. The infamous 'Conquering Lion' dubplate as played by Coxsone sound, revealed. Like most who hear it, we became entranced with this infamous and awesome tune after hearing a recording of its famous broadcast on David Rodigan's Capitol Radio show, by Coxsone sound selector Festus. He announced the tune as being sung by Lloyd Ruddock, 'King Tubby's from Jamaica's brother.' That man of course, is better known as Scunna, the original force behind the Jayes, who had a string of massive hits in late '70s for Channel 1, like 'Queen Majesty' and 'Truly.' As Scunna is also now a Brooklyn native, we checked him to find out more about the tune. 'Conquering Lion' was given by Prince Jazzbo to the then-young Coxsone sound system in London, for play and promotion on the sound. Over the years and through the Capitol Radio broadcast, the tune became legendary."

LATTIMORE, MARY: The Withdrawing Room LP (PATHWAY 006LP)
Seek solace. Be still and drift. Withdraw and be there. There. Inside. A chair awaits. A beginning built from an ending, from leaving, from afar. In times such as these, The Withdrawing Room is a safe haven to leave behind all that weighs heavily and surrounds us. We remark how comfortable the chair is, how exquisite the view is outside the window, the aroma, the breaths to be taken as you become aware of the minutia all around you and the sounds emanating from Mary Lattimore's harp, warming your feet, your hands, your heart. Breathe. Previous collaborations have seen Mary matching wits with such esteemed luminaries as Thurston Moore, Meg Baird, Kurt Vile, Ed Askew, Fursaxa, and Jarvis Cocker. But for this debut work, Mary sequestered herself in a room, much like this one, to kindle three distinct works for keeping the listener company as he or she enjoys the view. The nuanced notes of the harp strings sing and reverberate amid subtle electronics courtesy of Jeff Zeigler on the 24-minute long piece 'You'll Be Fiiinnne;' 'Pluto the Planet' meanders at a slow and steady pace as the sun makes its way across the sky and the gentle plucks of the silk and steel resonate within, beyond; the closing chaos of 'Poor Daniel' charts a recklessness that embraces the listener as he or she quietly makes their way out of the room to tackle the world anew.

FELDMAN/EARLE BROWN, MORTON: Morton Feldman/Earle Brown LP (DOZ 421LP)

David Tudor is featured on piano throughout. Feldman and Brown, who were both interested in non-traditional systems of notation and improvisation, were very closely aligned with the New York School, a group of avant-garde composers in the 1950s and '60s that included John Cage, David Tudor, and Christian Wolff. These composers applied to music many of the same ideas and experiments that visual artists, like Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, were applying to painting."

"The Watchers is a historic collaboration between Lubomyr Melnyk and James Blackshaw. These new pieces are being released as a CD/LP with material exclusive to each format. LP is pressed in an edition of 500. 'I first met Lubomyr Melnyk at a festival called Hea Uus Heli in October 2008. We were both scheduled to play that day and I was very excited to see him perform. Before the show I bought several LPs from him and mentioned as much. Lubomyr (more than modest and courteous, as he always is) asked me what I was doing at the festival and I replied that I was also performing at the festival a little later, to which he responded "I'll come and watch you," before being ushered into the hall to play one of the most staggeringly sonorous and beautiful sets I've ever heard. It was overwhelming, full of pathos and I left the hall with those incredible overtones hanging in my ears for hours. A couple of hours later, I was onstage when I glanced up and saw Lubomyr, true to his word, stood in the audience watching me attentively. I felt incredibly nervous. It's not everyday you get to play for someone who has greatly inspired and influenced your own music. After the show, I packed up my guitar and came out to meet the crowd. The first person who greeted me was Lubomyr: friendly, full of enthusiasm and keen to hear about my music, my processes, the way in which I made music. Yet again, I was overwhelmed - for very different reasons. "You have invented continuous music for guitar!" We all met at the Vortex Jazz Cafe around midday. We set up, Lubomyr at the grand piano, me directly facing him with my 12-string guitar and began. I would retune at random between songs and together we would find interesting chord progressions, hints of melodies and ways in which to weave those immense overtones that Lubomyr is able to generate on the piano with those of my guitar. No more than two takes per song. Improvisation, spontaneous composition, whatever you want to call it. Either way, it truly felt as if the piano and guitar were as one -- inseparable, parts of a bigger whole, a means by which for two people to make one sound. It never felt forced and never less than engaging. Lubomyr was always humble, jovial and open to ideas. The whole session lasted six hours.'" -- James Blackshaw, October 2012.

With their contribution to the Joyful Noise 2013 Flexi Disc series, Monotonix have thrown us a curveball. Their contribution 'Now' is a 6-minute balls to the wall experiment. "I'll Be Your Rainbow is the perfect example of how a classic '70s soul album should sound. Great songs (from Bobby and Motown hit-maker Vernon Bullock), wonderful orchestration (courtesy of Motown legend Paul Riser and the TK hit machine's Mike Lewis), and stellar musicians and singers (including The Jones Girls on background vocals) combine wonderfully with Bobby's impassioned vocals. A strong 10 cut album with echoes of Barry White at one end and Marvin Gaye at the other. Despite Buddah's strong R&B presence at the time, this album was destined for obscurity where it languished for almost 20 years until a brief reissue in the early '90s. The band consists of Ross Peacock (formerly of Clipd Beaks) and brothers Nathan and Cyrus Tilton (all three were previously in the Bay Area cult band NED). Throbbing ebb and flow, electronic undercurrents and elated pop flourishes characterize the album. Instruments are filtered through an array of analogue synths, analog drum machines exist in harmony with live drums, and other morphing walls of sound and spiraling sonic landscapes, Peacock's lyrics and often times haunting vocals distinctly ground the album. Inspiration was drawn from the tangible energy of the Oakland music scene which continues to burst with new bands and collaborations. Mwahaha took full advantage of this, enlisting friends from other bands to lend drum parts, as well as the singular voice of Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs on one of the album's stand-outs 'Love.' Anticon's Odd Nosdam also provided a notable remix upon the album's original release as well."

It is the seventh major book release by Johan Kugelberg, the author and editor behind The Velvet Underground: New York Art, Born in the Bronx and Punk: An Aesthetic (Rizzoli), True Norwegian Black Metal (Vice), Brad Pitt's Dog (Zero Books), and Beauty Is in the Street: A Visual Record of the May '68 Paris Uprising (Four Corners). The subjects of Enjoy the Experience range from lesbian folk singers to psychedelic disco bands; awkward teen pop combos to pizza parlor organists; religious cult leaders to swank Sinatra imitators. But this is not a novelty freak show: also profiled and discussed are some of the most highly regarded rock, soul, jazz, funk and singer/songwriter albums from the latter half of the twentieth century. From the awkward-yet-talented to the genius-yet-bizarre, one thing unites all musicians presented here: they sincerely hoped to become stars, they committed themselves to record, and they left themselves vulnerable to an industry not understanding of nuance, not appreciative of character. Enjoy the Experience includes an introduction by editor Johan Kugelberg, a lengthy overview by legendary rare record dealer Paul Major, along with commentaries, hundreds of reviews and over fifty biographies by noted enthusiasts and collectors like Gregg Turkington, Will Louviere, Brandan Kearney, Geoffrey Weiss, Jack Streitman, Eothen Alapatt, Rich Haupt, and Mike Ascherman." 512 pages; hardcover with a removable OBI ribbon. CELEBRATION: Old Green Village LP (TLR 060LP)
"First ever reissue of this rare and obscure French private press LP from 1976. More of a one-off happening then an actual band, the album resulted from the one only meeting of the group for a single overnight champagne-fueled session. As unlikely as it seems, somebody thought to roll some tape, and a very special evening was captured pressed to vinyl. Opening with a gorgeous drifting instrumental, and centered around three long jaw-dropping acid folk originals, the album is filled out by wild romps though traditional folk songs. All English lyrics, female backing vocal, two acoustic guitars, dulcimer, autoharp, banjo, and some especially beautiful snaky flute work. The original compositions are truly magical: gently flowing and beautifully pastoral, but with an eerie, druggy, edginess. Think The Book of Am minus the sunshine electricity and you'll be in the right zone. The trad folk cuts on the other hand are nearly as cool: joyous, dirty, and totally ragged music by for the people. No 'folk boom' pretense on display, just ageless tunes, fast pickin' and wild drunken wooziness, like some sort of reckless gypsy hoe-down. Everything here is totally steeped in a damp, pagan/mystical basement atmosphere, that combined with the raw direct-to-tape, no overdubs/mixing execution perfectly crude, haunting cover art make for a very distinct whole. Presented here our version is hand screenprinted just like the original, with a paste-on back cover reproduction of the original mimeograph, all on a heavy weight vintage style cover. Pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl with exact reproduction labels. Edition of 350 copies."

DANIELS, ELLIE: Both Sides of the Coin LP (TLR 061LP)
"Deluxe reissue of this totally unknown New England teenage folk private press from 1971. Originally released by the artist herself as a demo only blank cover edition of 100 copies. Just out of high school and hoping somebody might pay attention, the LP slipped through the cracks, the chapter closed, and life moved forward on a different course. But the album left behind stands as a true female loner folk gem, of which there aren't many at all. Just Ellie's humbly intimate vocals and her harp-like self taught finger-picked guitar playing, plus some lovely pastoral flute by a friend on a handful of tracks. The sounds are straight from the tuned-in melancholy teenage mind, reeling from the mind expansion of the 60s, but also the excesses. Deeply reflective, poetic and searching lyrics of love/nature/peace playing out in real time against stark reality/longing /loss, and balanced at the very edge of the void. The aching innocence of youth tempered by a biting contempt for all things false. In the liner notes Ellie mentions only practicing under a blanket, and there's an up-close, lo-fi, almost voyeuristic realism/fragility here that's quite special. A complex and personal trip that takes some time and attention to fully unfold. Once it does, it will be no surprise that Ellie went on to build geodesic domes and become a professional midwife, as that same unique spirit is already deeply embedded here. A really wonderful album we're happy to help finally reach some receptive ears. The original had no cover art, so we've kept the packaging suitably stark and mysterious, yet quite exquisite: each heavyweight vintage style cover is individually hand-bound in leather textured art paper, with the only graphics being a mounted 5x7 inch black and white photo print portrait of Ellie from 1970. Pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl, with exact reproduction labels and a thick insert with new liner notes by Ellie, plus more vintage photos. ANDROIDS OF MU, THE: Blood Robots LP (WW 008LP)
"The Androids of Mu were a noisy all-girl early post-punk band that emerged from London, UK, in 1979, alongside the likes of The Slits and The Raincoats. They met up in the wild squatter-lands of west London. Suze the Blooz, Corrina, Cozmic, and Bess became immersed in the local counter-culture. They grounded themselves in psychedelic synthesizer and guitar music, playing with Planet Gong and Here & Now, and musicians from Hawkwind. When they finally got hold of a cheap synth and a noisy guitar of their own, they used them, at full volume, with fat bass and bouncing drums, to record an album in the form of their new, colourful and zazzy reflections of life, from under the long dark shadow of puppet Thatcher's corporate new Britain. They gigged around, sharing bills with the likes of The Mob, Zounds and, The Astronauts. Blood Robots was recorded at lo-fi cult studio Street Level in 1979, this was their only ever album, originally released on Fuck Off Records. Now, cruel world, it is time for you to receive it. The band began with Shana Cleveland (guitar) and Marian Li Pino (drums) (both formerly of the K Records psych rockers the Curious Mystery) and now features Abbey Blackwell on bass and Katie Jacobson on keyboards. The group brings a relaxed beach-babe vibe to their take on the sweet, thick harmonies of '60s girl-group and doo-wop bands. La Luz is driven by thumping, energetic bass lines, danceable surf beats, trembling organ, reverb-soaked guitar, and a wild love of rock 'n' roll. The band recorded their first few songs with their friend (and ex- Curious Mystery bandmate) Johnny Goss in a sweaty apartment across from the laundry room in a Bothell, WA trailer park, and called the EP Damp Face. 'Call Me in the Day' and 'Easy Baby' are two heartache hits from the Damp Face session."
