OCTAVE ONE: Revisited: Here, There, And Beyond CD (4WCLCD1 500CD)
430 West Records celebrates an epic journey of groundbreaking music by revisiting classic tracks from its 20-year history with new reworkings from some of the Burden brothers' favorite producers. Following the success of Volume 1-4 of the Revisited 12" series, the label now releases a special Octave One respective album, Revisited: Here, There, And Beyond. It features tracks from the series as well as new and limited-release recordings. On this collection, 430 West ventures into the label's founding band's catalog, starting with the seminal tracks "Meridian" and "Dema," remixed here by Octave One themselves. On this journey we also find the Burden brothers' debut on Derrick May's Transmat imprint, "I Believe" getting a very special treatment from the enigmatic techno unit, Sandwell District. Featuring vocals from Lisa Newberry, the track was co-written and produced by Anthony "Shake" Shakir. Aril Brikha lays his hands on "Daystar Rising," from the monumental Underground Resistance/430 West Records limited-release record. Cari Lekebusch takes on "Love And Hate," originally released on Octave One's live DVD Off The Grid on Tresor. Cari reworks the track to give us his previously vinyl-only "Revealed Mix." Continuing on with another Tresor artist, Alexander Kowalski restyles "I Need Release." Featuring vocals fromAnn Saunderson, the original was the first release taken from Octave One's Summers On Jupiter album. From the debut 430 West Records release Octivation EP, Vince Watson offers his melodic take on Octave One's "Nicolette." The legendary Luke Slater re-evolves 2010's "The Greater Good." Japanese techno pioneer Ken Ishii also looks to the roots of the label and finds inspiration in Octave One's "Nicolette," offering his own club- pushing remake. From Octave One's native Detroit comes the keys behind Underground Resistance/DJ Rolando anthem "Knights Of The Jaguar," Gerald Mitchell, and his Los Hermanos remix of "Somedays." This also features the vocals of Ann Saunderson, taken from the Octave One album Theory Of Everything. Rounding out the remixers are Roman Flügel and Joern Elling aka Alter Ego, the producer's of the dancefloor killer "Rocker" and remixers of The Human League, Primal Scream, Chicks On Speed, Sven Väth, Baby Ford, and Cabaret Voltaire, among others. They contribute their great talent to the classic "Blackwater," once again with the vocals of Ann Saunderson.

REIKO, IKE: Kokotsu No Sekai LP (BAM 7005LP)
LP version. Although Ike Reiko was a mere 17 years of age when she recorded 1971's Kokotsu No Sekai, she was already a star in the world of Japanese erotic movies. Despite the tough-gal image, the music is pretty darn life-affirming, so don't think for a second you're getting an easy listening album here -- this is about as sexual as music can get. Throw "French Kiss" out of the window and give a kiss goodbye to your Serge Gainsbourg records, Ike Reiko is more sizzling than a branding iron as it makes its mark on the farmer's herd. The sex is literally dripping from every note on this record -- the style is "Iroke Kayôkyoku" or erotic kayôkyoku (kayôkyoku being a style of Japanese pop) but the sort of naïve jazz and pseudo spy theme movie music is all draped in a shroud of sexual shouts, screams and coos from the clearly excited Reiko. One must assume that she was in some kind of state of euphoria in the recording studio from the evidence on offer here, either that or she's a pretty realistic faker -- it's a smouldering collision, and that's about all that needs to be said. Kokotsu No Sekai has to be one of the finest gifts for the music fan in search of that killer oddity. First 180 gram vinyl reissue.

GARNIER, LAURENT: Timeless EP 12" (BEC 5161187)
The first rave CD head-honcho Pedro Winter bought was Laurent Garnier's A Bout De Souffle EP in 1993. He discovered Paris night life at Rex Club like most Parisian party monsters. Thursday was "Wake Up," where, once a week Laurent Garnier invited the cream of Detroit, the Chicago mob or the UK techno godfathers. We're in 2012, and the man is still spreading electronic music everywhere. This EP presents two pure and modern techno joints. Includes download card.

ELECTRIC GUEST: Mondo LP+CD (BEC 5161199)
Electric Guest is a Los Angeles-based rock band formed in 2010. Their music is a melding of R&B, funk, pop, and classic rock. With meditative lyrics, catchy choruses, and dance-inspiring rhythms, the band brings a feel-good experience direct to the eardrums. The band and their music is a collection of people and memories singer-songwriter Asa Taccone has picked up along the way of his long, circuitous journey towards completion of the band's first album, Mondo. This nomadic quality is felt in their songs that take surprising, symphonic twists and turns that are never jarring as Asa's rich, R&B-style vocals guide you smoothly, dreamily through their unique chord and movement changes. Electric Guest is comprised of Asa Taccone, from Berkeley, California and Cornbread (unfortunately, legally Matthew Compton), from Danville, Virginia. When they play live, they pick up three friends to fill out the complex instrumentation: Asa plays several instruments, Cornbread nearly a dozen. Asa had a fortuitous encounter with Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse, famed music producer behind Gnarls Barkley, Gorrillaz, Broken Bells, among many others). Brian liked what he heard and asked Asa to keep sending him stuff, which he wisely did. Over several years, the two formed a strong working relationship, Asa contributing his music production skills to many of Danger Mouse's projects. Then one day in 2007, Danger Mouse asked him to do a record. They revised Asa's many tracks, eventually whittling the number down to a realistic 10 songs that comprise this album. One journalist described their music as "a mutant -- albeit somewhat cleaned and electronic --'60s garage thing," likening the sound to The Troggs, The Seeds, and The Zombies. Cornbread admits that those bands were a great influence on them but their inspirations are impossible to nail down as they both appreciate and have worked in every genre of music: both having worked for years on various albums and music for film and television (Asa hides an Emmy somewhere for his work on Saturday Night Live's "Dick In A Box"). With such an eclectic mix of instruments and influences, it's hard to nail down the sound of Electric Guest, but Asa insists that it's ultimately pop music, disclosing, "I have a sweet tooth for terrible music so I won't even say what I'm influenced by."

O'MALLEY & STEVE NOBLE, STEPHEN: St. Francis Duo 2LP (WEAVIL 047LP)
2LP version. Having played together in Æthenor for the last couple of years, Steve Noble and Stephen O'Malley came together to play as a duo at Café OTO in 2011. These recordings are the result of these two hot and sticky nights in East London. Noble is a regular at Bo' Weavil Recordings, having appeared on over nine recordings for the label, and a linch pin in London's improvising community. So it was bound to be a memorable night of music to see these two meet. Steve Noble studied with Nigerian master drummer Elkan Ogunde in the early 1980s and over the last 20 years has played with most of the great players from all four corners of the globe. Stephen O'Malley is predominantly a guitarist, producer and composer who has been at the center of avant-garde/drone metal, best known for his group Sunn0))), and also a prolific collaborator with many of the finest improvisers. Noble sets the recording off with a full tribal charge, while Stephen, instead of firing off a shard of ecstatic notes and chords, coaxes his guitar into singing a slow, ever-growing roar. But soon the two are off into some wild, creative rampages -- exciting drum and guitar territory sounding at times not too dissimilar to Haino's Fushitsusha, brutally beautiful, shredded riffs from O'Malley meet with Noble's exuberant rhythmic force . On St. Francis Duo, the memory of these two nights can be heard in full violent sonic attack.

MOTOR: Man Made Machine CD (CLRX 001CD)
MOTOR presents their fourth album, which opens a new chapter in the history of the band. After completing three massively-successful and critically-acclaimed techno albums, Bryan Black and Oly Grasset, who together form the duo MOTOR, have shifted gears and recorded a song-based vocal album by the name of Man Made Machine. The album was conceived during their world tour with Depeche Mode in 2009 when Dave Gahan fell ill and the band found themselves in a hotel in Berlin with time on their hands. It features the vocalists Martin L. Gore (Depeche Mode), Gary Numan, Billie Ray Martin (S' Express, Electribe 101) and Motown's rising new star, Reni Lane. When MOTOR secretly played the first single from the upcoming album (also titled Man Made Machine) on a BBC radio broadcast, it got over 10,000 views within hours of being ripped and broadcasted on YouTube. The reactions from Depeche Mode and MOTOR fans are absolutely ecstatic. One online comment, which has often been quoted and agreed to, is that "Man Made Machine" sounds like the modern version of the Depeche Mode track "Personal Jesus" -- a royal honor for the guys from MOTOR. It is no coincidence that the album features some of the key figures in the evolution of electronic music. MOTOR have played as the main support act on sold-out tours for Gary Numan, Nitzer Ebb and Depeche Mode and have been considered one of their best-received support acts. They have performed on the main stages of all the top festivals with acts like Daft Punk, Kraftwerk, Soulwax, Justice, etc. They are known for having one of the most explosive and entertaining live shows in dance music. Other than that, MOTOR's music has been featured on various HBO and Showtime TV programs, in films and in several Playstation and Nintendo video games. Their impressive list of remixes includes "Precious" by Depeche Mode. In Mixmag 2006, Depeche Mode actually listed this one as their favourite DM remix of all time. This should in itself be enough to create some pleasant anticipation of the upcoming album and tour from these unconventional techno pioneers. Housed in a silver foil electrostatic bag.

PACO SALA: Ro-Me-Ro LP (DIGI 043LP)
Paco Sala first came to fruition sometime in 2011 as producer Antony Harrison began developing a totally different side to his usual musical explorations as Konntinent. Following up a debut cassette, Radial Sundown, that introduced Paco Sala as a new solo vehicle for Harrison's love of hip-hop, Italo-disco, & synth-infused pop music, Harrison joined forces with vocalist Leyli -- and everything changed. Leyli's voice became the perfect vehicle for Harrison's squashed productions, adding an elegance and airiness to his dark, introspective tropes. This is most evident on the show-stopper, "Spiral" -- Leyli's vocal is divine, streaming skyward as it twists into endless, delicate shapes, with a hypnotic beat and Tropicália-infused loops acting as the perfect backdrop. Leyli slowly takes over the album's first single, "Gifts Of The Bloom," with layer-upon-layer of wordless murmurs. Along with B-side opener, "Tre's Future First," they show off Paco Sala's Italo influence with stunted beats and catchy, yet minimal synths. It's the vocals, though, that continually push Ro-Me-Ro to another level. Ro-Me-Ro is as striking a debut as any on the esteemed Digitalis label over the last few years, tapping into that emotional, sparkling intersection where followers of Nite Jewel, Chromatics, Not Not Fun and Julee Cruise will find much comfort. Original art by Marie-Pascale Hardy. Mastered by Brad Rose and cut to vinyl by Rashad Becker at Dubplates + Mastering, Berlin. Limited to 500 copies only.

OMNIVORE: Omnivore LP (FTR 072LP)
First album by Glenna Van Nostrand, a Cambridge, MA-based performance artist obsessed with archaic telecommunication hardware. Using solo vocals run through an old telephone, amplified by a variety of radios, her work creates its own rhythms through hypnotic layering, repetition and the imperfections built into her chosen delivery system. Alternately ethereal and cracked, her performance takes simple kernels of thought and speech, creating mystifying vistas of otherness that hint at the eternal now. The only specific musical accompaniment comes from her use of a telephone's touch pad as a keyboard, but the rich weirdness of her compositions is consistent and dazzling. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Machines With Magnets with Keith Souza and Seth Manchester in Providence. Are you ready for two side-long slices of the Omnivore experience? MISTY HUSH REVIVAL: Your Heart Is Broken LP (GUESS 097LP)
One of the most obscure U.S. private pressings from the late '60s/early '70s. For many years, The Misty Hush Revival name was only a rumor whispered in collector's circles, with only a handful of copies known of the original album around today. Like The Bachs or The Index, this is one of those hard-to-describe albums which seems to live in a world of its own. Despite the late 1972 release date, the music here sounds more late '60s than early '70s and the whole album has a cool, lost-in-time atmosphere. The group were in fact a club band from New Jersey, but surprisingly all the tracks are originals -- no cover versions -- and they range from fragile, dreamy pop-psych numbers to raw garage, fuzzed-out jams and teen-beat sounds. Like Patrick Lundborg says in Acid Archives: "A cool, atmospheric trip for fans of the tri-state late '60s club sound." First time-ever reissue, remastered on 24-bit. Includes the original artwork and an insert with rare pictures and liner notes by Jack D. Fleischer.

SCSI-9: Metamorphosis 2LP+CD (KL 010LP)
Gatefold double LP version with free CD. SCSI-9 (Anton Kubikov and Maxim Miluytenko) present their fifth full-length release. SCSI-9 are by far the most recognizable and booked house/techno duo from Russia. With a total of more than 50 releases and 120 tracks so far on labels such as Traum/Trapez, Salo, Freizeitglauben, Morris Audio, Highgrade, Force Tracks, Tyrant and Kompakt, they have earned great respect worldwide and are famous for their eclectic and crystal-clear tech sound. Their "Mediterranean" touch made them stand out among the Russian electronic music community and gave them the role of the "New romantics" and the "Originators of the Russian Deep" according to worldwide press. Their Line Of Nine (KOMP 051CD/ KOM 138LP) album showed their pop touch in the new Russian deep house movement -- laidback, cheerful, melodic arrangements growing slowly into a groove. SCSI-9 continue their odyssey through the oceans of electronica, this time together with long-time friends at Klik Records. Inspired by the works of Jean-Luc Godard and Arthur Rimbaud, Anton and Maxim now steer their boat over deep and slow waters. Focusing on the sound that made them famous in the beginning, they experiment a lot with dub and dark ambient and step away from the pop-forms of their recent past. "Schaukel Duo" marks their new dubby statement, slowly evolving into the perfect companion for an early-morning drive. "Nostalgia" keeps a similar dubby tone, using a guitar to get you in summertime mood. "Song From The High Tower" and "I'm Lost" include vocals from singer Gregor Ladenhauf (Zanshin, Ogris Debris). "Alphaville" is deep house par excellence which includes vocal bits from Stylish Murphn morphed beyond recognition and samples of a duduk (a traditional Armenian pipe). The cover photos were contributed by Russian photographer Mikhail Rosanov, who shot them during a recent expedition to Antarctica. With Metamorphosis, SCSI-9 show a musical snapshot of today's reality and transmute real life with a totally new overall sound.

OTHER HALF, THE: The Other Half LP (PIL 6001LP)
LP version. This legendary early psychedelic band are best-known for featuring the guitar wizardry of Randy Holden (who went on to join Blue Cheer and record a shattering solo LP). Based in Los Angeles, they gigged regularly in San Francisco, sharing stages with many of the city's best-known acid-rock bands throughout 1967. Their sole LP -- a mixture of singles and newer material -- appeared in March 1968, by which time Holden had departed. Brilliantly showcasing his innovative playing, it's a psychedelic classic, and is issued here complete with five bonus tracks culled from rare 45s and a French EP.

Ly Sander & Michael J. Collins join forces to bring you Raoul06 via Raoul, a deep, soothing EP. "No Response" is a laid-back and haunting piece, featuring warm bass and soaring pads. The "Deep Space Orchestra Remix" lays a beat and a groove under the track and takes us to galactic depths. "Russian Roulette" displays nice use of delay and relaxed percussion. This hasn't got the "boom" of techno, but it does have the space-y synths and ambience to bring you to your feet.

FUNKEES, THE: Dancing Time CD (SNDW 039CD)
Dancing Time: The Best Of Eastern Nigeria's Afro Rock Exponents 1973-77 by The Funkees is the latest title on Soundway to mine the rich musical output of '60s and '70s Nigeria. For the 5-year period this compilation spans, The Funkees' output crackled with dancefloor fire. Having featured on three of Soundway's most popular titles, across the definitive Nigeria Special compilation series, Soundway felt The Funkees' output deserved closer inspection. Presented here are 18 slices of funky Afro-rock grooves, hand-picked by Soundway's Miles Cleret from a selection of the band's 45s and two full-lengths. In the early 1970s, The Funkees were the #1 east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos-based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. It wasn't long before promoters in the UK came calling and The Funkees packed up their instruments and moved to London, where they quickly established a fierce reputation on the live circuit. Here, they recorded two seminal albums before finally breaking up in 1977 amidst some controversy. This collection features for the first time all of their Nigerian 45s alongside the best of their UK album material and is accompanied by a full interview with original member Sonny Akpan, who still lives in the capital.

TURMAN, ROBERT: Flux CD (SP 010CD)
Flux is the 1981 debut solo outing of Robert Turman, an American multi-instrumentalist and avant-garde composer. Until recently, Turman was perhaps best known for his contributions to the ballistic NON project with Boyd Rice, as well as other obscured U.S. industrial acts such as Z.O. Voider. In the summer of 1981, Turman decided he would take a drastic turn from the noisy/electronic/industrial work of his compatriots, and began work on what is now the classic Flux cassette. Flux was originally self-released in extremely limited numbers. Weary of the noisescapes of old, he set out to create long-form minimalism utilizing kalimba, piano, "Mini-Pops Jr." drum machine, and tape loops to create a complex bed of interweaving micro-stasis. The results of these new experiments were as beautiful as they were perplexing. A curious, dusty fidelity carries these classic tracks across four sides of vinyl, including all of the original Flux content. These compositions glow with a sprawling, slow-motion haze that's light years ahead of its time. Flux reveals wide spectrums of sound from melancholic kalimba and percussion patterns to slowed-down, syrupy exotica. Turman had complex ideas in his mind, yet only the simple technologies of the day were at hand. Hear the click of the stopping and starting Tascam 3340 open-reel tape machine as one hand presses the "record" and "play" buttons and the other plays piano phrases. While there are similarities in style to classical minimalism, Turman's sound and vision is his own and is exclusive to his limited discography. Lovingly remastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering from the original C-60 cassette master. Original cassette artwork and scans provided by Aaron Dilloway.

WATSON, CHRIS: Outside The Circle Of Fire CD (TO 037CD)
2012 repress. Third edition, now with a new sandstone color version of the artwork. The purr of a leopard close up against a baobab tree, waiting. Whales surfacing, breathing in cold air. A starling imitating the noise of farm machinery from the hollow ring of a ruined bothy, an evening chorus of corncrakes across the iris beds, dry topical contact calls follow spider monkeys through the canopy, a lioness threatens, the deep roar of a red deer stag, the rattle of wood over a black stream. Chris Watson's second CD, originally released in 1998, is a dramatic contrast to the spacious atmospheres of Stepping Into The Dark (TO 027CD). Featuring 22 close-up recordings of animals, birds and insect life, Outside The Circle Of Fire enlarges our awareness of the sound-universe, intimate with voices from the past. There is an intensity here that television pictures cannot conjure.

SOUL CLAP: EFUNK: The Album CD (WLM 002CD)
The wisdom of Soul Clap has been beamed down to Earth in the form of EFUNK -- Everybody's Freaky Under Nature's Kingdom -- their debut album on Wolf + Lamb. Soul Clap delivers a galactic renaissance to fill our ears with interplanetary consciousness and emancipate our booties from the androids of dancefloor repetition. The days of EFUNK are upon us, restoring dopeness in the universe, as we groove on and move on together in intergalactic harmony! Limited to 13 songs over 45 minutes to fit on one 12" record and operate the mothership control-panel. The album also tells the story of Soul Clap's journey so far in a concise musical statement that could only be accomplished with the skills of master DJs. Along their path returning from the outer-reaches to save dance music from the eclipse of darkness, Soul Clap's pop sensibility captured the hearts of many earthlings. Help in the transformational process is obliged from their close-knit Wolf + Lamb family, who have shared and shaped their journey into the consciousness of the terrestrial. The young Jules Born of the Voices Of Black duo injects his raw-funk stamp into "Let's Groove On." Baby Prince aka Gadi Mizrahi of Wolf + Lamb features alongside other members of the family on "The Clapping Song." Charlie also plays kazoo, guitar and keys. Greg Paulus of No Regular Play beams in his magnificent trumpet on the serene closing broadcast, "Islands In Space" as Charlie sings in cosmic frequencies and Eli's father Gary Goldstein strums the bass. Goddess deities lead EFUNK's transmission further into the light. Franceska unveils her Janet Jackson-like powers on "Take It Slow" and Mel Blatt of All Saints fame wrote and sang the lyrics for "Ecstasy." Hijacked by a UFO to study the effects of the spotlight over a decade, Mel recently returned with divine powers. Her lucid voice returns for "Need Your Lovin'." Originally an edit Charlie created from an intense love for the original, when they shared it with Mel over stargazing, her mutual feelings led to them recording her vocal and replaying all the parts, becoming a reinvigorated fresh interpretation of the rave classic. Further into un-charted territory, "The Alezby Inn," a cover of legendary West Coast electro don Egyptian Lover, features Genevan Heathen, who shares a Boston connection and unleashes an EFUNK masterpiece, a mischievous jam that speaks its own truth. "Let It Go" was resurrected from an early demo Roldy Cezaire gave to the guys during their legendary mid-week parties in Boston. Lazarus Man's epic "When The Soul Claps" is a staple a cappella in Soul Clap performances, and the EFUNK formula for it beams a powerful skyrocket to the stars. Soul Clap's training goes beyond history lessons to master all the elements of the DJ: knowledge, mixing, programming, performance and experience. As true conquerors, their EFUNK mission shares timeless frequencies, bringing new levels of consciousness through time and space to be shared for many moons to come.

HEARTS AND FLOWERS: Now Is The Time For Hearts And Flowers LP (4M 198LP)
"Though they are often only referred to in passing, as a sort of footnote of the '60s West Coast scene, Los Angeles group Hearts And Flowers were actually one of the most eclectic groups of the time, incorporating elements of psych and country into their folk-rock sound. Founded by Larry Murray, a southern transplant to LA, and a graduate of the same vibrant Southern California bluegrass scene that gave way to Byrds and Burritos, the group's debut, Now Is The Time For Hearts And Flowers, is a classic album that deserves mention in the same breath as Sweetheart Of The Rodeo or Bradley's Barn." "Rarely does a legendary band break up, reunite fourteen years later, and proceed to make an album nearly as strong as their previous work but, in 1992, New York legends Television did just that, with their eponymous thrid album. The trick, Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, & Co. realized, was not to try to sound like 1978 Television, but instead to embrace where the last decade had taken them, and make a new sound, still distinctly Television, but also distinctly not a sad attempt to relive past glories. ALPHATAURUS: Live In Bloom LP (AMS 049LP)
"When we announced the reunion of Alphataurus in 2010, after over 35 years of silence, many people waited for the usual odd nostalgia concert without major consequences. This proved not to be true, as the gig of November 6 was a memorable event for the lucky 700 people who came at the Bloom in Mezzago, a really great gig for passion and energy and the few who were lucky enough to see the band yesterday and today, confirm that Alphataurus has not lost an ounce of energy and enthusiasm that made them, forty years after their only LP, one of the most esteemed and beloved bands of the Italian seventies prog scene. After the success of that show Alphataurus did not stop, as the band promised to return on stage and studio permanently. As a first comeback, we propose the professional recording of that memorable evening, witnessing one of the greatest live comebacks of Italian prog. The dove is back! Dedalus was originally released in 1973, and in the same year the band took part at the Avantgarde and New Trends Festival in Naples, being pointed as the real revelation of the event. BLAND, BOBBY: Two Steps From The Blues LP (DOY 662LP)
"Originally released in 1961, blues singer Bobby 'Blue' Bland's legendary Two Steps From The Blues has been repeatedly called 'one of the best blues albums of all time', and Bland one of the genre's greatest singers (and top sex symbols in his day), no small feat in a genre so crowded with amazing talent. Throughout '60s and '70s Bland placed over 50 songs on the R&B charts, including 'I Pity The Fool', which shot to No. 1 and 'Turn On Your Love Light', a song that shaped the history of both R&B and rock & roll. Bland got his start singing in the early fifties as a member of a loosely knit group of musicians that included Junior Parker, Johnny Ace and B.B. King that formed around Memphis' famed Beale Street. Together these giants forged the new sound of Memphis blues, a sound that would carry both blues and R&B into the next millennium. WILDWOOD: Plastic People 2CD (FRAN 303CD)
"Stunning new late '60s psychedelic hard rock 2CD anthology with 12 page color booklet. Don't be fooled by the name-- with a moniker like Wildwood, you might expect pastoral lite-rock from some self-absorbed hippies. Instead, this hard rocking quartet of the same name parlayed some of the toughest, most malevolent late '60s sounds heard on tape, and their spectacular legacy is celebrated upon the deluxe 2CD anthology Plastic People. Wildwood hailed from the tough blue-collar environs of Stockton in California's Central Valley and they walked it like they talked it. In the late '60s Bay Area mellow milieu, Wildwood was the exception-- dark and vaguely sinister in both look and style, they melded the fuck you attitude of the garage era with a soulful R&B streak and some enviable hard rock chops. Nevertheless, the outfit ruled the region between the years of 1968 and 1972, promoting their own shows and recording a slew of original material at the old Fantasy warehouse in San Francisco. Two sought-after 45s -- 'Plastic People' and 'Free Ride' -- were all that escaped of Wildwood for public consumption at the time, but Frantic has gathered up the rest of the sessions to present the rest of their outstanding, power-packed repertoire."

"Hyperdub present a brilliant and subtle curveball courtesy of Philly's finest, King Britt, in his new guise as Fhloston Paradigm. Built from drum machines, analogue keyboards and 303s, and edited in the computer, these three lean and mean tracks have an unadorned feeling that build on Hyperdub's love for old John Carpenter style electronics, combined with Dr Patrick Gleason's ear for the abstract, and bouncy drum machine syncopation that sounds like they're aiming for an alternative present where analogue synths are still king."

BLACKSHAW, JAMES: Love Is The Plan, The Plan Is Death CD (IMPREC 355CD)
"Important is proud to welcome back James Blackshaw for his first full length since on Important since his breakthrough album O True Believers was released on the label in 2006. James has since forged a remarkable career achieving critical praise for his dexterity, his deep, connected songwriting and his beautiful arrangement. Written at a time of great emotional disquiet, the hauntingly beautiful and bittersweet ninth full-length studio album, Love Is The Plan, The Plan Is Death', from British guitarist-composer James Blackshaw was recorded at Soma Electronic Music Studios, Chicago in December 2011 by engineer Andrew Hernandez (Balmorhea). The six original pieces contained on the album (whose titles are lovingly misappropriated from those of short stories by the late, great science fiction author James Tiptree Jr AKA Alice B. Sheldon,) are based alternately around nylon-string classical guitar and grand piano, with spare and subtle vibraphone and B3 organ parts overdubbed by Blackshaw himself. Genevieve Beaulieu (Menace Ruine/Preterite) adds her stunning and powerful voice and words to track 'And I Have Come Upon This Place By Lost Ways.' Love Is The Plan is an incredibly warm and intimate recording and perhaps Blackshaw's most concise, consistent and overtly melodic to date."

CREATION: Pure Electric Soul LP (MJJ 333LP)
"Led by Japanese guitar hero Kazuo Takeda, Creation was instrumental in opening the ears of Japanese audiences to the sounds pouring in from the West. After having spent some time around London's music scene in 1971, Takeda took his experience home to start a band that incorporated these sounds into something that was at the same time uniquely Japanese. From 1975-1977 Creation released three albums (one of which was recorded in the USA with American producer Felix Pappalardi, whom Takeda had met in London). 1977's Pure Electric Soul was the band's final effort. An album of riff-heavy and funky blues rock, mostly penned by Takeda, with the exception of the blues standard 'Frankie And Johnny' and the Yardbirds' 'Happenings 10 Years Time Ago'. Once again the controversial cover artwork featured a group of nude boys."

MASATO, MINAMI: The Tropics LP (MJJ 334LP)
"Born in Asagaya, Tokyo on 3 March 1944, Japanese folk singer Masato Minami began his musical career after spending a few years bumming around Mexico and the US and taking in the burgeoning beatnik (and related drug) scene. While in the US Minami saw one of Dylan's early performances and returned home to Japan to start a band. After the release of two singles (in 1969 and 1970), 1971 saw the release of his debut LP, The Tropics. For this opus Minami enlisted the considerable talents of guitarist Takashi Mizutani (of Les Rallizes Denudes fame) and bassist Haroumi Hosono (of Apryl Fool and Happy End) resulting in this incredibly rare example of early Japanese acid folk. Featuring bonus track 'It Can't Be Over'."

FELIX: Oh Holy Molar CD (KRANK 165CD)
"Oh Holy Molar is the second album from UK trio Felix. The group produces a bewitching, minimal chamber pop that works as the perfect framework for singer/songwriter Lucinda Chua's oblique and emotionally immediate stories of superstition and searching for protection against bad omens. As a follow up to their debut You Are The One I Pick, the band return with a collection of songs with a sound stripped back to its very core. Something is said to have 'teeth' when it has the ability to make an impact. This record certainly has 'teeth', and sharp ones at that. ' The album was recorded in a vast, spooky 1940s cinema in Nottingham, England, now converted into a studio. After recording was completed the band discovered that underneath the live room lay an abandoned Dental Laboratory. Oh Holy Molar indeed."

HAZLEWOOD, LEE: The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, & Backsides (1968-71) CD (LITA 084CD)
"With his handlebar moustache and booming baritone, Lee Hazlewood was one of the defining stars of the late '60s. Though he's perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit 'These Boots Are Made For Walking'), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. Now, for Record Store Day 2012, we are kicking off our excavation of the Lee Hazlewood archives with this anthology, Singles, Nudes & Backsides, collecting the best of Lee's solo songs and duets from his LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries) imprint. As a true legend of the great American songbook and a rebellious pioneer who left behind a lengthy trail of echo laden pop masterpieces, Lee's influence continues to reverberate today. Between 1968-71, Hazlewood not only released his finest solo work, but produced numerous artists on LHI. From acid-folk and country-rock to pop-psych and soul, LHI issued dozens of long forgotten 45s and LPs. This series will include material from LHI (re-mastered for the first time from the original analog tapes), along with Lee's output for other labels, rarities, unreleased gems, and the films of Torbjörn Axelman. See the sleeve: surrounded by nude girls, each wearing a fake moustache, Hazlewood wears a suit, ever-so-slightly awkwardly playing the role of the '60s playboy. Just like the picture, the songs present a man conflicted; he's the tender-hearted romantic, the broken-hearted loser and the rugged cowboy, all in one. It's there in the western swing of 'Califia (Stone Rider)', the loneliness of 'The Bed' and the bleak beauty of 'If It's Monday Morning.' Hazlewood's tremulous voice was made for duets (indeed, he wrote 'Some Velvet Morning', one of the greatest of all time); here, Suzi Jane Hokom, Ann-Margret and Nina Lizell play counterpart to his manly tones. In the wonderful liner notes, written by British journalist Wyndham Wallace, the writer describes his friend Hazlewood as 'a curmudgeonly, unpredictable sort at the best of times, as impatient with his own talent as he is with other people.' The Hazlewood Wallace knew was puzzled by the growing interest in him in the last two decades of his life, which was ended by cancer at age 78." Includes a 40-page full-color booklet with extensive liner notes and photos.

HOLLINS AND STARR: Sidewalks Talking CD (LION 653CD)
"....it has a trace or two of Arthur Lee and Love at their best ('Krishna Dov' would not sound out of place on Forever Changes, for example), with dashes of maybe Terry Callier in some of the jazzier tunes.... At times this album is a gorgeous, ethereal blend of psychedelic folk and offbeat pop; but there are some funk and avant-garde moves too (where did those crazy orchestrations, wild guitar, and breakbeats on the fierce anti-war rave-up 'Hard Headed Woman' come from?), all supported by an odd assortment of instruments, including flute, bells and a generous helping of fuzz guitar. Chicago-based duo Chuck Hollins and David Starr only made this one album, which originally appeared in 1970 on the Ovation label. All we know about them is what the original ads for the album said: 'David Starr learned piano when he was three, began composing when he was four. At twenty-one he was playing flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Chuck Hollins picked up a guitar one day and just started playing.... by the time he left Northwestern with his creative writing degree he was turning his poetry into music.'" Packaged in a heavy mini-LP style cover in a dust sleeve with obi strip.

VA: Underground Praha: Banned In Czechoslovakia LP (OL 001LP)
Subtitled: Musical Activism Under communism, 1975-1990. "Until the fall of the Soviet Union, popular music, and particularly rock music, was banned in Czechoslovakia. Hence, most of the bands were playing instrumental music to avoid any trouble with the government; however some of them were radically engaged against the censorship and communist regime and had to record live materials during forbidden concerts. The music was incredibly raw; a kind of free jazz rock with both psychedelic hints and punk flavors, added to screaming vocals. This set is the best way to enter the fascinating and innovative sound of the Czech counter-culture. "Osage Tribe were an Italian prog band who released just one album in 1972, Arrow Head, before splitting up and disappear -- even if all band members went on playing in other groups as Duello Madre, Capsicum Red, The Trip and Il Volo. The band was founded by Franco Battiato, who left right after the release of the single Un falco nel cielo to pursue a solo career that's still active nowadays. The other musicians then significantly changed their musical style, moving towards a hard rock-based progressive, including some jazz elements too. Still considered a must-have for any Italian prog listener, Arrow Head is now reissued as an audiophile 180gr. black vinyl, enclosed in a gatefold envelope faithful to the beautiful original '72 edition."

GRAVENHURST: The Ghost In Daylight CD (WARP 216CD)
"Gravenhurst is the work of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nick Talbot from Bristol, England. The Ghost In Daylight is his most sonically diverse work yet, building upon his brand of ambient noise-folk with starkly acoustic songs resting alongside densely layered pieces. The album's lead single 'The Prize' is a dark meditation on recurring Gravenhurst themes of compulsion, degradation and the possibility of transcendence, and contains some of Nick's finest lyrics to date. Conjured from disparate ingredients, Gravenhurst's roots lie in the melodic noise of My Bloody Valentine, the lush vocal harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel, the alchemical guitars of Richard Thompson and Johnny Marr, and the widescreen ambient visions of Brian Eno."

Each of them had received the same message with the following content: enclosed, you will find samples taken from more than 200 tracks released on Areal between 001 (Basteroid/Automatique) and 057 (Metope/Betawolf). No rules. And their words have obviously fallen on open ears: the called have poured onto us supreme grandeurs of music whereby each of them individually tackled the historic collection of Areal sound files. You can literally feel the fun they had quoting the label's history and the loads of positive energy. So, the label would now like to proudly present: A 100 Years Of Areal -- a wonderful collection of homages to Areal's old and new friends, such as: Schleppstigg, Hrdvsion, Undo, The Cheapers, Pan/Tone, Pascal FEOS and Frank Leicher, Andreas Henneberg, Fairmont, Metope, Basteroid and Falko Brocksieper.

DOWNTOWN PARTY NETWORK: The Machine Man 12" (BKS 002EP)
Saulty and Bradka, the two behind the Vilnius-based Downtown Party Network tag team, combine together more than 10 years of DJ and production experience. Their original productions have been signed by Eskimo, Loud East, Bear Funk, etc. Here, they deliver the first single of another kind for Best Kept Secret -- killer bass lines combined with irresistible jazz chords on the A-side and some Metro Area'ish, stripped-down funkiness on the B-side.

VA: 10 Years Of Boxer CD (BOXER 090CD)
It's Boxer's birthday, and how else does a label celebrate 10 amazing years, than with a compilation? More a favorite mix tape than a Best-Of-Everything, this full-length compilation doesn't tell you much about the label's back catalog or sales figures, but keeps things surprisingly focused within its 11 tracks, although it sports a bewildering variety of styles with each artist thinking outside the box. Already the first track, a dreamy, draft-like experience from the mind of Stephan Hinz, leaves a lot to the imagination, thus installing the frame for things to come. Kolombo and Von Spar both prowl the same funky hunting grounds, but present divergent results. Grade A grooves await the listener with Popnoname, tOMBo (feat. Schad Privat) and Paul Nazca, who all find new perspectives on the sound you'd expect from them. Let's not forget the not-so-secret centerpiece of this album, its heart and soul, Scalde's inspired ballad "We Drive Away." This song replaces the usual rave climax with a perfectly balanced, humanist flow full of wisdom and romanticism, informing the follow-up track by Le Dust Sucker in the most drastic way. Whereas this powerful production duo has become known for their furor, they crank up the serenity with "Everybody Used To," delivering a perfectly-formed pop gem. The same can be said about Robag Wruhme and Extrawelt, whose production skills reach dizzying heights with their contributions, upgrading the floor with broken beats and epic harmonies. In the end it's mostly the unconditional love for details and the dramaturgical subtlety that gives 10 Years Of Boxer its coherence, thus saying more about the quality of a label than a thousand Best-Of-All-You-Can-Hear derivatives this industry usually churns out in a matter of seconds.

GLITTERBUG: Cancerboy CD (CSIDES 009CD)
Glitterbug's albums, releases and remixes (on respected labels such as Mule, Nowtown, Ghostly, Ki Records and many more) have long placed him in a musical and artistic category of his own. He is a timeless, skillful and daring producer, immune to hypes and seasonal sub-genre fashions. He has developed his own particular musical language that spans seamlessly between deep techno and abstract intimate compositions, always poignant with score-like textures. His third studio album, Cancerboy, is another milestone conjoining powerful musical expression with heavy content. Cancerboy is an intimate autobiographical journey investigating one of the major experiences that shaped his life, his childhood struggle with cancer. Cancerboy is a personal, private chronicle of battles won and struggles lost, a sound-log suspended in an in-between world. Cancerboy is an album on the edge of consciousness. Faraway reverbs and analog roughness gain presence, and forward strides an unreserved sound; candid, direct and near. It's music that allows itself to be angry and desperate, to battle and depart, to challenge and gall. Yet within all its darkness are driving, hopeful moments that shine bright -- celebrating a deep love of life. "I spent large parts of my childhood in hospitals, voyaging through the strange (and at that time experimental) world of radiation and chemotherapy, suspended in the twilight zone between hope and death, and a medically declared chance of survival close to zero. Those experiences deeply shaped me, and the way I relate to the world, and over the years I felt a growing need to approach this topic through my music. So came about Cancerboy, an album about cancer, bitter struggles, desperation, hope, anger, sickness, and at the same time, a fervent love and deep appreciation of life. Cancerboy is dedicated to my sisters and brothers in this struggle, both alive and dead. It's for all the cancergirls and cancerboys out there." --Glitterbug

PILLOW: From Dusk To Dawn CD (CCO 050CD)
Best-known as the keyboardist in Italy's premier post-rock combo Giardini Di Mirò, wowing fans and skeptics alike with their formidable albums and impressively intense live performances, Luca Di Mira finally returns as a solo artist. After Flowing Seasons (2006), released on the now-defunct label 2nd Rec, From Dusk To Dawn is the second album he has pursued on his own. Six years down the line, Pillow's sound has changed quite drastically, yet glows with the same shocking deepness. Focusing on a unifying, even more orchestral sound, Di Mira creates his own melancholic universe. Centered around the epic "Silent Journey," Pillow demonstrates in each and every track, how music should be approached in these troubled times. Merging subtle piano fragments, overwhelming string arrangements, minimal guitar melodies and even 4/4 beats, Pillow has written a soundtrack no one will ever forget. From Dusk To Dawn (explained in Pillow's own words): "This album was almost entirely written at night. I started writing when I moved from the city to the mountains. The nightly landscape and the quiet/calm/peacefulness have been my muses, from summer to winter, from dusk to dawn. Every song is a night-life fragment, full of peace, silence, hints and dreams as only nature can offer. The album was written, performed, produced and recorded by myself in my studio. The string sessions were played by Emanuele Reverberi (violin and trumpet in Giardini Di Mirò) and recorded at the Igloo Audio Factory (Correggio - Italy) by Andrea Sologni and Marco Peterlini. The last song of the album was written for Ada, my daughter. The chorus voice is of Elin Olofsson, a Swedish songwriter who, at the time, was Ada's nanny."

SLEEP RESEARCH FACILITY: Stealth 2CD (CSR 159CD)
Sublime new album from the drone/dark ambient legend, Sleep Research Facility. As a project commissioned for Cold Spring, Stealth presents itself as an exploration of sounds neither here nor there, textures camouflaged against their own background noise, and the distant crackling telemetric code-speak of a vague humanity hidden behind a cloak of deadly high-technology. Comprised of five deeply-layered extended tracks, mixed and edited from re-sampled location recordings originally captured inside the hangar environs of a Northrop-Grumman B-2 Stealth Bomber, during a period of downtime maintenance at a U.S. Air Force base in Cambridgeshire, England. Original field recordings and texture preparations by FOURM/Si_Comm. First edition pressing of 1,000 copies includes a bonus disc comprised of this "pre-mix" material in its original, un-edited form, as a representation of the source audio from which Stealth was reconstituted. Deep listening inspired by one of the most mysterious aircraft of the 20th-century. Headphones recommended.

BURIAL HEX: Book Of Delusions CD (CSR 166CD)
During the period in which Clay Ruby (also known as Burial Hex) first began working on this piece of art, he had become so completely surrounded by evil and deception that he was forced to begin summoning a particularly extreme and ancient force of protection and vitality just to make it alive through the end of 2008. Aside from spiritually fortifying Ruby's life, the complexities of these new elemental entities brought with them circumstances causing a much more rich and intense recording experience than he could have ever composed on his own. Classic horror electronics and post-industrial apocalyptic soundscapes with unsettling notes, anguished cries and voices of the dead. His most ritualistic album yet. Reissue of the extremely limited LP with bonus tracks taken from the split LPs with Kinit Her and Zola Jesus, all available on CD for the first time! All tracks have been carefully remastered.

HAMPSON, ROBERT: Répercussions CD/DVD_AUDIO (EMEGO 132CD)
Editions Mego is very happy to announce the release of UK experimental musician Robert Hampson's second solo album under his own name. Released as a special two disc package: one a Stereo CD the other a 5.1 Surround DVD-A (NTSC format/region-free -- playable on standard DVD players and home computers). "Répercussions": an acousmatic multi-channel piece commissioned by the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) in Paris for a performance at the Akousma festival, diffused on the Acousmonium speaker system in 2011. Recordings of percussive instruments of all kinds -- piano, drum skins, gamelan, metal grates, etc., are treated and manipulated to form a dense, non-linear or non-rhythmical narrative. Each instrument has been "remixed" repeatedly, to change its sonic shape or timbre, to try and form new textures from normally recognizable ones. A more direct 2-channel Stereo version is available and a 5.1 surround version, mixed at the GRM, gives an indication of how the piece was originally conceived as a diffusion. "De La Terre À La Lune": an acousmatic multi-channel piece commissioned by Espace Mendes France for a performance at The Planetarium in Poitiers, France, diffused on an 8-channel system. The second piece, following "Ahead - Only The Stars" (released on Vectors, [TO 071CD]) takes its influence from the early NASA missions into space, but more directly from films such as Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Tarkovsky's Solaris and even earlier films such as Pal's Conquest Of Space. Of course, there is also a serious debt to Jules Verne's novel of the same name. Again, a straight Stereo version and 5.1 diffusion mix are available. "Antarctica Ends Here": originally released as part of a split 10" vinyl-only issue with Cindytalk on Editions Mego, this piece has its first digital format release in Stereo and also 5.1 surround. Three textural drones, derived from single piano notes, stretched and looped blend with a field recording of bamboo rustling on a breezy autumn day. Overlayed is a simple and repetitive piano motif which gradually disintegrates into a spectral blur. Its title is in homage to John Cale's final song on the album Paris 1919 "Antarctica Starts Here" and the piece is dedicated to him.

MUNK, JONAS: Pan CD (EPR 009CD)
This is the first solo effort from Jonas Munk released under his own name. Jonas Munk is a musician and producer from Odense, Denmark who has been active in a wide range of musical styles for the past decade. In the European psych-rock community he is mostly known as the guitar player in the respected stoner/jazz/Krautrock-outfit Causa Sui as well as related projects such as Chicago Odense Ensemble, a joint session project featuring members of Causa Sui, Chicago Underground Collective and Tortoise, which resulted in a 2LP released in 2011. Outside of these circles, Munk is best known as a producer of electronic music, most recently with a full-length collaboration with German synth-meister Ulrich Schnauss. Munk also holds a masters degree in philosophy with a thesis on music and consciousness. Pan simultaneously betrays his connections to the European stoner-rock community and the world of electronic ambient music -- this album combines ideas from both worlds, while the result really doesn't belong to either of them. With Pan's motorik analog synthesizer patterns and its warm, fuzzy drones, the influence from 1970s German synthesizer and new age music, such as early Kraftwerk, Ashra and Popol Vuh, is apparent from the first note. But there's also definite traits of American styles running through this album, from the flowing optimism of Alice Coltrane and Terry Riley to the modern-day psychedelia of Comets On Fire and Bardo Pond. While large parts of Pan have been programmed on electronic equipment, there's a jam-like quality emanating from the album's seven tracks. The album reflects the idea of giving up rationality and control with the purpose of letting the music flow towards it own ends. The compositional ideas are incredibly simple while still carrying a certain depth. Soundwise, Pan is all about analog machines, 30+ year-old synthesizers, detuned guitars and heavily-cranked vacuum tube amplifiers weaving together in fuzzy, pulsating glory. The title Pan refers to the ancient Greek word meaning "all" or "everything."

EGG, EGGS: The Cleansing Power Of Fruit LP (FTR 073LP)
Despite Matt Krefting's resistance to all things fruity, there is little doubt that these friendly non-mineral, non-animal products of nature have the capacity to flush poisons through our internal trails far better than 'most anything else. Especially eggs. Still, it is an egg that remains Dave "Mr. E. Candy" Russell's muse as he fumbles his way through a vocal universe that is collapsing around his French ears. Something like a cross between Crocus Behemoth, Little Lulu and Colonel Bruce Hampton, Russell is on fire here, his vocals emerging from fruit-caked lips as though they were pearls shot from the buttocks of an all-seeing vizier. What Russell does exactly is hard to say, but its slow-kid, sing-song quality is bizarrely captivating. And the band here is a goddamn all-star Valley ensemble -- Tim Sheldon, Andy Crespo, Brett Robinson, Ted Lee, Vanessa Brewster, John Moloney, Jack Callahan, Ian St. George and special guests -- Matt Valentine, Jeff Hartford, Conrad Capistran and Lisette Lopez. Recorded over the last couple of years in various places around Western Massachusetts, it makes a strong case for Egg Eggs as the most discordian combo in this part of the universe. The comparison your brain will keep returning to is the Hampton Grease Band, updated to shine stylishly in a post-noise-rock milieu. It shares the same mix of brilliance, annoyingness and sheer what-the-fuckery as Music To Eat. And that ain't hay. Nor is it fruit. Hurray!

WEISMAN, CHRIS: Fresh Sip 2LP (FTR 074LP)
Vinylization of a brilliant cassette album originally issued by Autumn Records in 2010. Perhaps best known as one third of Happy Birthday, whose eponymous Sub Pop album was much favored by people with ears, Chris is sometimes called The Brian Wilson of Brattleboro. When you swim into the ocean of Weisman's sound you will find your ass alternately cupped and buffeted by paddles of unique design. Weisman pretty much does all the work on Fresh Sip -- vocals, keys, guitar, percussion -- all of it blasting out like a classic ready-made version of Todd Rundgren rewriting the Chris Bell Songbook with help from Dean Torrance. The sides flow and ebb like a pleasantly full diaper, although -- like a diaper -- there are also surprises in store for lucky listeners from coast to shining coast. No less an arbiter of yuppie etiquette than NPR's "All Music Considered" rated Fresh Sip as one of the top ten cassettes of 2010, and for once, those Skele-Toes running shoes-wearing cupcakes may have gotten something right. The more it plays, the better it sounds. Take that, Bob Dylan, you fucking crybaby.

MISTY HUSH REVIVAL: Your Heart Is Broken CD (GUESS 040CD)
Like Patrick Lundborg says in Acid Archives: "A cool, atmospheric trip for fans of the tri-state late '60s club sound." First time ever CD reissue, remastered on 24-bit with original artwork and a booklet with rare pictures and liner notes by Jack D. Fleischer, and two bonus tracks not on the vinyl release.

BORATTO, GUI: This Is Not The End Remixe 12" (KOM 239EP)
From Gui Boratto's album III (KOMP 090CD/KOM 242LP) comes "This Is Not The End," an indie-minded track that convincingly demonstrates Gui's impressive skill set when it comes to emotional narratives embedded in a distinctively monumental context. The song also features beautiful vocals from Luciana Villanova. On his own "2012 Mix," Gui tweaks the arrangement for ease of use on the floor. Those of you looking for a slightly more adventurous approach will find their satisfaction with Michael Mayer's rework on the flipside.

SEI A: Speicher 71 12" (KOM EX071EP)
Sei A, native Glaswegian, now resides in London, immersing himself in the hybrid house, firm techno and bass-heavy scenes that happily co-exist within the UK's capital. He's well-known to paint vivid and emotional sonic pictures that touch on rather more considered house and bass tropes, prizing feeling over fads and staging an impressive balancing act between hardcore beat science and lush, moody arrangements. This 12" is no different, featuring two stellar examples of Sei A's stylistic reach, rave stabs included.

TOBIAS, TOBY: Paradise Lost EP 12" (LPH 005EP)
This EP finds Toby Tobias dropping deep and frothy house with a steely underbelly. "Paradise Lost" begins with a muddy synth line upon which ambient, meandering melodies are layered, all led by a distant voice singing nonsense. Marcos Cabral's remix cuts to the chase: the Brooklyn-based producer quickly injects the song with a hefty dose of adrenaline, speeding up the feel. "Choc-Ice For 4" is a funkier affair that prominently features a fat, disco-y bass line offset by cold, precise synths. Remixed by Tokyo Black Star.

KRUSE & NURNBERG/MATTHIAS MEYER: Home By Six/Levant 12" (LIEBE 039EP)
Kruse & Nürnberg return with another sure-shot in their trademark groovy and reduced house sound. Designed for the most discerning dancefloors, the subliminal, sultry vocals of Karina Junker are twisted around an infectious jam. Smooth Rhodes flutters indulge the funk within and the result is an unmissable spring-time frolic. Matthias Meyer brings his latest deep-charge to the table with "Levant." Playful, filtering drums and percussive fills work a complex groove into the foreground while a gently growing melodic theme builds.

BRANDLMAYR/WERNER DAFELDECKER/CHRISTIAN FENNESZ, MARTIN: Till The Old World's Blown Up And A New One Is Created LP (MINIMAL 011LP)
M=minimal is pleased to release a masterpiece of the early 21st century on vinyl. Till The Old World's Blown Up And A New One Is Created is an outstanding work of reductionism and minimalism. Martin Brandlmyar (Radian/Trapist/Kapitalband 1), Werner Dafeldecker (Polwechsel, David Sylvian, Autistic Daughters) and Christian Fennesz (Touch/Mego/Thrill Jockey) on this record created a new kind of cool jazz coupled with a big portion of New York School (John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and Christian Wolff). It's hard to describe the music with words. This work reveals its secrets only after listening to it a couple of times. It grows with each time you listen to it. In this work, silence and noise are never used as an end in itself. As equal parameters they stand in the composition that also has space for some tonal "flowers." M=minimal's recommended listening time is round about midnight. Christian Fennesz: electric and acoustic guitars, computer; Werner Dafeldecker: double bass, tape delay, computer, Martin Brandlmayr: drums, percussion, vibraphone, computer, piano. Editing and arrangement by Martin Brandlmayr. Cut by Stefan Betke at Scape Mastering. Cover artwork: Christian Borngräber, cover photography: Jens Strüver.

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD: Zug: Reshaped And Remodeled CD (MINIMAL 012CD)
Conrad Schnitzler is an early member of Tangerine Dream and a founding member of Kluster, along with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and his works will always be important. Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer were so fascinated by his album Zug (MINIMAL 001LP), that they immediately delivered two reshapes of this milestone of electronic music. Max Loderbauer is a veteran of the Berlin techno scene, who became known with his project Sun Electric. For his current project NSI and as a member of the Moritz Von Oswald Trio, Max Loderbauer enjoys a worldwide reputation. His great cooperation with Ricardo Villalobos for the legendary ECM label appeared in many "Best of 2011" lists. Ricardo Villalobos is one of the leading techno DJ/producer/musicians. He has influenced the scene for more than 15 years. The "Aktion" mix targets with 100% certainty on the dancefloor, but is also suited to wake you up in the morning. DJs need this 20-minute mix as a tool. The "Sorgenkind" mix is not for the mainfloor but for fans of the broken beats. Everybody who enjoyed the RE-ECM work of the two will love this 15-minute mix. Schnitzler/Loderbauer/Villalobos = dreamteam. The CD version also contains two amazing remixes by Stefan Betke aka Pole and Borngräber & Strüver.

SUUM CUIQUE: Ascetic Ideals LP (LOVE 078LP)
For their first release of 2012, Modern Love delivers the second album from Suum Cuique, the analog noise/experimental project from Miles Whittaker, one-half of Demdike Stare. The first Suum Cuique album Midden (YOUNGAM 002LP) was released on Modern Love sub-label Young Americans back in 2010, with these new recordings made in the intervening years and in between sessions for the Demdike Stare album, Elemental. What differentiates this project from all the others Whittaker is involved with is that the material recorded under Suum Cuique was made using analog hardware only, often recorded straight from the mixing desk with no overdubs or edits. The sound veers from the intense shards of noise that make up album opener "Strohtopf" to the padded techno malfunctions of "Kuiper Anomaly," the found sound/shortwave radio signals of "Atlas Levels" to the mystical rotations of "Intonation" and the electrified drones of album closer "Dionysus Decay." Although there are obvious sonic threads running between Suum Cuique and Demdike Stare, the material on Ascetic Ideals is much more stark, at turns recalling the work of Mika Vainio, Eleh, Maurizio Bianchi and even John Carpenter, whose nightmare visions lurk somewhere deep in the mix. Mastered and cut by Lupo at Dubplates & Mastering, limited to 700 copies.

DECIBELIOS: Oi! LP (MR 323LP)
Decibelios are one of the pioneers and main reference points when talking about Oi! music in Spain. Formed in 1980 in Barcelona, their beginnings mixed late-'70s punk and hard rock, but they gradually introduced ska elements into their sound, always accompanied by a combative and in-your-face attitude. The culmination of that sound and attitude took shape on the 1984 LP Caldo De Pollo and the mini-LP Oi! from 1985, reissued now on vinyl for the first time. The latter presents the band and their proposal at their peak, and is one of the essential records of Oi! music recorded in Spanish. It contains fierce highlights from the band's repertoire such as "Viento De Libertad" and "Subversión," ska gems like "Ningún Nombre De Mujer" and a tremendous cover of The 4-Skins' "Chaos."

ELS MASTURBADORS MONGOLICS: Els Masturbadors Mongolics LP (MR 324LP)
Els Masturbadors Mongòlics were one of the first punk bands from Barcelona, formed in 1977 by Lluis Miracle with an ever-changing line-up which had guitarist Paco Martínez as its other constant member. Among the people involved was Manel, later guitarist of Decibelios. In the same way as legendary bands like La Banda Trapera Del Río, the usual lack of resources and general incomprehension towards Els Masturbadors brought them all kinds of problems, only made worse by their completely irreverent attitude, which caused chaos almost everywhere they played, including their participation in the festival Canet Rock in 1978 -- all of which led to the break up of the band at the end of that year, just over a year after they first got together. Before that, they managed to record a number of tracks for EMI, which never saw official release and are now made available for the first time. It's the evidence of a crucial period for the later changes in Spanish music, which were only possible thanks to the transgressive and no-holds-barred behavior of bands such as Els Masturbadors Mongòlics.

ROM: Foot Signal CD (PING 033CD)
The New York and Miami based-duo ROM deliver this LP with 12 wildly energetic instrumental pieces. Pingipung very happily welcome Roberto Carlos Lange and Matt Crum to their artist family. ROM is the vibrant collaboration of two sound artists who have been on the radar for a long time, as members of beloved projects such as Savath & Savalas (Warp, with Prefuse 73's Guillermo Scott Herren), Comic Wow (Asthmatic Kitty, with Tortoise's John McEntire) or Roberto's solo project Helado Negro. ROM's first appearance marked their self-titled debut on the Japanese WIMM imprint in 2005. Despite having been recorded over the span of three years, and in various locations in different cities, ROM's sophomore Foot Signal effort is an entirely cohesive sonic outing. That they used mostly broken instruments throughout the process only reinforces that soundscape they sought to create. That they played them even with their feet as the title reveals gives us a slight visual hint at the anarchy of the sessions. Could they have used an organ that stayed in tune? Probably. But taping its keys down and pressing record in hopes to document something at all usable is part of the random fabric that makes ROM's music so incredibly transcendent. Largely recorded with Will Loftin at Shangri-la Studios in Atlanta, Roberto Lange and Matt Crum captured scores of live improvised sessions onto two-inch tape. The two also set up shop in apartments, studios, and storage units in Miami, Savannah, New York -- even Jeremy Lemos' Chicago studio to try and document the inspiration they felt lurking. The sessions were then labored over at home studios, shared over the Internet, processed and reorganized until this collection of 12 instrumental pieces emerged. Foot Signal's tracks have been released on a limited CD through WIMM in Japan in the past years. It has now been cut onto vinyl at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin for the first time. Standout track "Whale Vomit" does not sound like the regurgitated mess it purports itself to be. Instead, it is the perfect combination of unwavering percussion, vibraphone flourishes, and studio-manipulation wizardry. It's the kind of stuff that makes ROM so darn exciting.

ORPHAN, DAVID: Songs For Hannah Henley LP (VHSX 005LP)
David Orphan's Devon Folklore Tapes is a research and cultural heritage-based community label in the vein of Smithsonian Records, founded by Finders Keepers' David Orphan. Although the label has been releasing music on special edition/customized books and cassettes for some time, this contribution to the Pre Cert Home Entertainment label sees Orphan deliver his long-awaited vinyl debut. The soundtrack to Hannah Henley sees a mechanical hybrid of old Soviet electronic organs, looped field recordings and found vocals lost in an immediate and tensely hypnotic narrative to an account of opposing forces that is as unsettling as it is captivating. Field recordings were utilized and integrated within these pieces, adding more flesh and providing a sense of place. The LP becomes a sound portrait blurring the lines between documentary, music, and artefact. The cover art features an inverted letter-press coded graphic using the text from the story of Hannah Henley as its visual source along with a bone found and utilized within the recording itself. The words to the tale are included in the accompanying sleeve notes, for those interested in those dark details. Cut at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering, limited to 500 copies only.

JONSSON, DAVID THOR: Improvised Piano Works I LP+CD (BROADCAST 001LP)
"I am a pianist, composer, improviser, performing artist and a multitasking musician in life, currently living and working in Reykjavík. I was born in 1978 in Seyoisfjörour, Iceland and have been playing the piano and keyboards since the age of 9. My main focus and interest is in improvisation, composition and performance of music -- how improvisation and composition can meet effortlessly as a creation of musical ideas and sounds. I am also mindful of the general passion and drive behind the creation of things, in what way they are presented and passed on to people, in music, arts and life in general. Since childhood I've collaborated with a whole spectrum of artists, from obscure troubadours in the countryside to stadium bands, covering all fields of music, both in Iceland and abroad. I have also composed and arranged a great deal of music for theater, film, art installations, performances and videos of all kinds. I released my first album Rask in 2002, and now I am currently composing and working on a series of records with solo piano music for Radio Bongo with Improvised Pianoworks I as the first Radio Bongo release." --David Thor Jonsson

ROSKA: Rinse Presents - Roska: 2 CD (RINSE 026CD)
Through a series of iconic early releases in 2008 on his own Roska Kicks & Snares imprint, Roska originally made his name for his raw, gritty funky tracks. However, even at the time, when the funky scene at large seemed like a time-bomb just waiting to explode and take the mainstream by storm, he was doing something subtly different. Strongly rooted in Roska's history in grime, his music infused that genre's roughness and nervous energy with more sultry, swung rhythms, welding big, blocky melodies to a percussive house backbone. Rinse Presents - Roska: 2 is his most wide-reaching collection of music to date, reaching far beyond the confines of funky while still keeping his signature sonic flourishes intact. Rather than remaining locked to any one scene, Rinse Presents - Roska: 2 continues to show off Roska's development as an artist in his own right. Club-driven funky still remains at the heart of the music he makes -- it's immediately audible in opener "You Dun Kno's" springy, syncopated percussion and "Do You Like This," which finds Jamie George again joining Roska. But elsewhere on Rinse Presents - Roska: 2, he uses funky's lithe percussive patterns as a springboard to toy with other sounds. So the snare hits on "Memories" crack like gunshots, but they're lifted by a buoyant vocal from Ruby Goe, and "Eleven45" is a deliciously synthetic slice of computer funk. "OnRinseSinceZeroEight" is, in essence, a grime track at 130bpm, switching up regularly between halfstep rhythm and deadly four-to-the-floor. The twin spectres of grime and dubstep turn up throughout the record. Sweetie Irie's gruff turn on "Badman" is bolstered by seasick, descending synths. Mz. Bratt delivers a hyperkinetic MC performance on "Go," and "Spanner In The Works," a formidable collaboration with Swindle & Funtcase, is led by stringy funk chords reminiscent of the hyper-colored synth work of the Butterz crew.

PROPER, SAN: Animal 2LP (RH 118LP)
San Proper is the real deal. Somewhat of a street legend, even. This might be his debut album, but make no mistake, Proper is a hardcore DJ veteran, starting his career DJ'ing small-time gigs in the shadiest bars, six nights a week. True love for music and his unbreakable optimism kept him in the groove. His enthusiasm caught on and slowly but surely he garnered a devoted following. In 2007, he released his first releases for Rush Hour, but his big break came in 2009 when he dropped his now-classic single Keep It Raw for Perlon and shot to #1 in Germany's Groove Magazine Top 50. More singles followed and his profile of a must-see DJ and pure-bred entertainer rose, touring and creating cult followings everywhere from Japan to South America. Dr. Proper has never been in a hurry, but in the fall of 2011, the time felt right for San to start working on his debut album. Months of rampaging studio sessions followed, writing tracks all over the globe during his frantic touring schedule or in his Amsterdam studio and Paris apartment. The journey finished in Berlin, where he ended up in the studio of Proper believer Ricardo Villalobos, who eventually mixed the album, ensuring audiophile bliss. The result is the trippiest of trips. Taking you on a journey inside the twisted brain of a man who has seen it all, and then some, boasting raw emotion and subconscious desires. Animal has its roots in house music, but you will have a hard time categorizing this beast, sounding like a cluster-bomb of electronic funk, jazz and psychedelia.

POLICY: One Last Time 12" (RH 120EP)
New York-based producer Policy returns to Rush Hour with a new single including remixes from FaltyDL and Tom Trago. "One Last Time" is an emotive piece with a strong theme -- the drum track is fierce, giving it a futuristic vibe. Tom Trago teams up with studio partner Maxi Mill and delivers a tough, stripped-down 909 house version. FaltyDL on the other end went exploring in electronic adventure-land for a fresh, new perspective.

LEGO FEET: Lego Feet 2LP (SKA 001LP)
Double vinyl edition with a nice UV-finished sleeve of the self-titled release from Lego Feet aka Autechre. This reissue includes all the original material from the 1991 EP, plus extensive bonus material (same content as the CD reissue), re-recorded from the original mastertapes. This is the holy grail record of electronic music, but you already knew that. This four track album contains over 70 minutes of classic, mind-bending, futuristic electronic-acid-industrial-cut-up fuckery that, at the time of its release in 1991, was virtually uncategorizable. Legendary electronic duo Autechre went on to advance the most seismic paradigm shifts in the sound of the late 20th century, and their seminal early release is presented here with two tracks of material that have never been heard before. All tracks have been re-recorded from the original master tapes. 1991 was an eventful year in human history -- the Dow Jones topped 3,000 for the first time; Boris Yeltsin got elected; Freddie Mercury died -- but among mankind's greatest accomplishments was the creation of the Skam label. At the time, hardly any record store bought the label's first 12". It wasn't until much later, after Autechre had established themselves as a pioneering experimental electronic group and some genius coined the term "IDM" to classify this baffling type of music, that the original Lego Feet release would become one of the true Holy Grail records.

YAKINE: Rise EP 12" (SPC 109EP)
Yakine presents his first release for Spectral Sound, a four-track slab of understated, atmospheric techno. The title track features a guest vocal from Canadian DJ/producer James Teej, who intones a series of faintly sinister demands over a backdrop of pulsing bass and stabbing synths. "For Motion" picks up both the tempo and the energy, while "Disaster Drop" and "Except" both have a distinctly dubby feel, all spacious reverb and vocal samples that drift in and out of the mix.

DRAINOLITH: Fighting! LP (SP 017LP)
Alexander Moskos is a seasoned Canadian avant-garde musician active in projects such as Alterity Problem with Joel Taylor and the legendary Thames, who had an incredible 7" release on American Tapes in late 2011. Drainolith, his solo guise, has been active since the mid-'90s but has remained relatively under-the-radar with mysterious private press cassette and CD-R releases. In 2009, Moskos picked up a heavy U.S. tour regiment and caught the attention of U.S. underground heads with impressive live sets. It was around this time that Moskos began to dial in songs for his debut Fighting! LP, which Spectrum Spools is eager to present. It's important to keep listeners on their toes and Spectrum Spools is fully psyched to hit you with an album of delusional blues -- littered with fractured synth, feedback and seriously cryptic personal content. One of Spectrum Spools' first releases with strong lyrical focus, Alex knocks it out of the park with his synthetic voice resonating like a wasted Robert Ashley on Ambien. The tracks rage with a one-man Twin Infinitives style, with guitar riffs so fucked that they make Neil Haggerty sound like Les Paul. Damaged, random syn-drum triggers and MS-10 crackling go fully ballistic over dark and personal narratives. Despite the chaotic nature of the music, there is a defined and cohesive song structure to each track which makes everything more confusing but also highly enjoyable to listen to. If you miss bands like Shadow Ring and Royal Trux, but wonder where the logical next step would be in their absence: step in this direction -- we promise you'll be pleased. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates + Mastering, Berlin.

CHANCE, BOB: It's Broken CD (JBH 044CD)
"There's no one quite like Bob Chance. He's a California man who makes his own music. And here he is, on fire. It's a privately-pressed album that has become a cult item in recent years. DJ Shadow calls it 'hairy forearm disco,' I think it walks a fine line between the dancefloor and the asylum. Originally recorded and issued by himself in 1980, It's Broken represents Bob Chance's creative juices flowing and then possibly overflowing all over the place. He's a multi-talented multi-instrumentalist who writes his own songs. Trunk first came across the album in the USA, and decided to feature it as one of the strange slabs of vinyl I write about for my 'weird record' column in Mojo. I described it as the musical equivalent of Curry House DIY, an unusual and unexpected flow of ideas that maybe shouldn't work together but actually do in a most unorthodox and functional way. And if I have to describe the album musically to people I explain it has a touch of Giorgio Moroder, a bit of the Beach Boys and a sprinkle of Glen Campbell as a serial killer. How can you not love a nine-minute post-disco oddity called 'It's Broken?' Why would you not want to thrill at a five minute instrumental journey into Bob's jungle? And how about a short trip inside a stalker's van? Exactly, it's all irresistible. And now, thanks to this reissue, more of us can enjoy the genius that is Bob Chance and his very unique music." --Jonny Trunk

VA: Skanish Sound: Jamaican Influenced Music From Spain CD (VAMPI 142CD)
...1964-1972. Trying to pinpoint the influence of Jamaican music on Spanish pop in the '60s and '70s, taking into account the sociopolitical situation in Spain, is like a script from Spanish director Luis García Berlanga. Despite Spanish public fervor for the suggestive, hot melodies coming from the Antilles, the Francoist censors tried to avoid any general lack of inhibition, minimizing the impact of the music's most enticing elements on Spanish soil. In the margins, apart from sterile regime-promoted national flamenco and sleep-inducing ballads, one could find few black elements in Spanish pop. At that time they were found in their Latin form: rumba and salsa and even sometimes something like Afrobeat. So it was necessarily the case that only the less suspicious artists had an opportunity to copy what they could get their hands on from that treasure island. The first vibrations that arrived to Spain from Jamaica, via England, came in the form of records. Given the difficulties, none of the artists collected here would have had access to the original recordings nor to Jamaican radio. Clearly then, their method of absorption and assimilation was that of musicians the world over: they heard it, they liked it, they copied it. And if any Spanish musician active in the 1960s claims to have set foot in Jamaica, it was all but impossible. At most, some Spanish pioneers were lucky enough to cross the Pond in the 1960s as cruise ship musicians. In any case, it's uncertain whether any of the players on this compilation came into contact with Jamaica by natural route. Equally uncertain is the occurrence of concerts by Jamaican artists in 1960s Spain. Therefore, what we have here is a captivating collection of tracks (mainly covers but also a few originals) which mix the enthusiasm and fascination of musicians who were captivated by the sounds coming from Jamaica. At times, the results they achieved fit within the expected sounds of the genre, but sometimes their efforts produced a mixture, whether intentionally or due to better intentions than skill, which gave Jamaican music a uniquely Spanish character. Most tracks reissued for the first time. Includes informative liner notes by compiler Txarly Brown along with record sleeves and artist photos.

VA: SAOCO!:The Bomba And Plena Explosion In Puerto Rico 2CD (VAMPI 145CD)
...1954-1966. Cortijo Y Su Combo with Ismael Rivera, and Mon Rivera with his tongue twisters and trombones, are pioneers of a story that opened up the way to the salsa movement. With an unprecedented mix of flavors and Afro-West Indian rhythms, their dance proposals competed with the best tropical orchestras of the '50s and '60s. The legendary legacy of these Puerto Rican orchestras, however, hadn't been the subject of a proper retrospective, until now. In the case of Cortijo and Ismael, it's a cultural legacy related to the "third root," or African contribution, in Puerto Rico's Caribbean culture. Since its birth in the year 1954, until today (half a century after its break-up in 1962), Cortijo's combo and its stellar singer, Ismael Rivera, have been the best exponents of a modern, orchestrated and commercial way of performing bomba and plena -- Afro-Puerto Rican genres in whose tradition they had been raised in the capital's neighborhood of Santurce. To these native rhythms they added other Caribbean ingredients which were popular at the time, creating and integrating an innovative proposal that many consider the greatest precedent of the salsa movement that would emerge years later in New York. In only eight years of existence, the group became hugely successful in Puerto Rico and New York, the West Indies and part of Latin America -- particularly Panama, Venezuela, Colombia and Peru -- and even Europe. With percussion upfront, Cortijo y su Combo were a tight mess of rhythms, expressive even in the shaking and dancing of the band members while they performed their choreography on stage. This compilation looks at the importance of Cortijo and Ismael in the context of the time, contrasting their recordings with those by other contemporary artists with more or less similar styles. Among them is the essential figure of another great "plenero" and salsa pioneer such as Mon Rivera, known as "El Rey del Trabalengua" (The Tongue Twister King) (due to his comedic way of playing around with syllables to modify the rhythm and sense of a sentence) and for having started the "trombanga" kind of sound, which replaced trumpets and saxophones with trombones. It was a key innovation in the birth of boogaloo and salsa, which particularly inspired Eddie Palmieri and Willie Colón. These three legends are accompanied by other tropical ensembles of the same period - Orquesta Panamericana, Sonora Ponceña, Mario Ortiz & His All Star Band and the singer Chivirico - but also groups and vocalists related to the "jíbara" tradition or country music, whose repertoire includes, apart from seis and aguinaldo, plenas, bombas and guarachas. Its typical instrumentation of strings and accordion, together with its peculiar singing style, offer an interesting contrast with the way in which the tropical orchestras played those same rhythms. Includes extensive liner notes by compiler Yannis Ruel, illustrated with original artwork and memorabilia.

PARALISIS PERMANENTE: El Acto LP (MRSSS 027LP)
Parálisis Permanente was formed in 1981 by Eduardo Benavente and Nacho Canut, at the time members of the legendary Alaska y Los Pegamoides, one the first post-punk bands from the renowned Movida Madrileña scene to achieve a relevant degree of success. After two EPs and a few changes in the line-up, Benavente became the natural leader of the band, joined by Johnny Canut, Ana Curra (also an ex-Pegamoide) and Rafa Balmaseda (ex-Glutamato Ye-Yé). They recorded El Acto in 1982 and soon it became one of the key albums to come out from the early '80s scene that was rapidly changing the face of Spanish music. The LP embraced the dark sound and image represented then by UK bands such as Bauhaus, Killing Joke, The Cure or The Damned and filtered those influences through Benavente's immense talent and his captivating presence as a performer. The record was a mature and strong piece of work, superior in sound and overall effect to most contemporary Spanish albums. When everything indicated that the band was only starting its greatly promising career, a fatal car accident on their way to a show took Benavente's life when he was only 20 years old. Although another single was released weeks after and the other members would carry on being involved in music, this tragic event meant the end for Parálisis Permanente as a band. PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE: Two Electronic Sonorities LP (ALGA 038LP)
"Alga Marghen proudly presents two seminal electronic music radical realizations by Charlemagne Palestine. These previously unpublished pieces confirm once more how advanced was his Golden Research already in the 1960s, a very personal approach to sound which would have later become so influential for future generations. 'Continuous Sound,' built by an ever-changing mix of adding and filtering white noise and simple sine tone generators, is the most solid sound construction that Charlemagne created in preparation of his lost electronic masterpiece 'L'Avventura,' inspired by the Michelangelo Antonioni movie with the same title. 'Continuous Sound' pre-dates 'L'Avventura' of just a few months and with its suspended atmospheres and its deep sense of mystery represent one of the most fascinating sonic works by Charlemagne Palestine. 'Crown Chan' is an electronic music piece created for a dance by Gus Solomon in 1970. Conceiving music for dancers gave Charlemagne the possibility to experiment and manipulate the reel tapes of some of his electronic sonorities. In a previous collaboration with Gus Salomon, Charlemagne created a new sound by simply superimposing two already existing and accomplished electronic drones. 'Holy1' and 'Holy2' thus became a completely new sonority titled 'Holy1+2' (these works were included in the CD titled Alloy, also issued by Alga Marghen). In the case of 'Crown Chan' Charlemagne worked in a more structural way, shaping his electronic sound materials into two stereo reel tapes (titled 'Crown Chan' 1&2 and 'Crown Chan 3&4') which also integrated silent parts and were meant to be played back simultaneously, thus providing a powerful live music for the dancers. Edition limited to 380 copies, with an institutional portrait of the composer on front and back sleeve for you consumers to enjoy."

SOLAL, MARTIAL: Breathless (A Bout de Souffle) LP (DOY 665LP)
"Don't miss this deluxe vinyl edition of the original soundtrack to Jean Luc Godard's 1960 masterpiece Breathless! Co-written with Francois Truffaut, it was one of the most influential films of the French nouvelle vague, blazing the trail for a whole new brand of filmmaking. For the soundtrack, Godard enlisted the talents of Martial Solal, a member of the Parisian jazz scene who had worked with Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and Don Byas, among others. Solal's low key approach gave Breathless exactly the ambience it needed to exude 'young, cool and sexy' from every pore, which more than 50 years later it still does with surprising efficacy."

DE SARAM, ROHAN: Rohan de Saram Plays Hans Pfitzner and John Mayer CD (FHR 014CD)
"In 1935, the German composer Hans Pfitzner wrote a rousing cello concerto for Rohan de Saram's teacher, Gaspar Cassado. With an abundance of irresistible qualities, the work possesses extraordinary richness and delight. A self-described anti-modernist, Pfitzner's best known work is the post-Romantic opera Palestrina, loosely based on the life of the great sixteenth-century composer. This recording, featuring de Saram accompanied by the Netherlands Radio Orchestra led by Bohumil Gregor, marks the work's first appearance on CD. The concerto is coupled with two Indian influenced chamber works by John Mayer, the 'Prabhanda' for cello and piano and the 'Ragamalas' for cello and tanpura."

NERVEBREAKERS: Hijack the Radio! CD (GH 1134CD)
"An anthology of mid to late '70s studio recordings, some of which ended up on the Nervebreakers' late-70s 7" vinyl releases on Wild Child Records, some on the 1979 Texas punk LP compilation Are We Too Late For The Trend? (ESR Records), some on a volume of Italian label Rave Up Records series of American Lost Punk Rock Nuggets, and others that have up-to-now never been publicly released. Includes the original (and best) hit recording of 'My Girlfriend Is A Rock,' the title anthem "'Hijack The Radio,' and punk classics like 'Why Am I So Flipped?,' 'I Wanna Kill You,' and 'I Love Your Neurosis.' Also included are proto-punk psych-y gems like 'My Life Is Ruined' and 'Beyond The Borderline.' The CD release has four additional CD-only bonus cuts including an early (different from the We Want Everything LP) take on the Troggs' great 'Strange Movies,' an original 1977 demo version of 'Hijack The Radio,' and from 1975, a moody slice of Syd Barrett-like proto-punk-psych called 'See Me Thru.'"

THIRD EAR BAND: The Lost Broadcasts DVD (HST 069DVD)
"The Lost Broadcasts are a series of DVDs featuring performances that have rarely been seen since the original transmission on German television, in some cases more than forty years ago. Third Ear Band was an experimental music group founded in London by Glen Sweeney in 1968. Their first album Alchemy was released in 1969 and actually featured British radio DJ John Peel on jaws harp. Three pieces were filmed on the 11th of September including the unreleased 'Hyde Park'. The other two tracks were 'David Grocking' and 'In D', which is thought to be 'Raga in D'. 'Druid Grocking' was played during a John Peel Top Gear session in the summer of 1969 and is an extended workout of the song 'Druid One' from the Alchemy album. 'In D' is a piece originally recorded at the sessions for the debut album Alchemy. The band returned to the studio to film once more on the 26th of September and this time performed another slightly shorter version of 'Hyde Park'." NTSC All Region format.

BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN: Goldberg Variations CD (LDV 001CD)
"French harpsichordist Frederick Haas has made a name for himself with an aristocratic, pensive style more attuned to introspection than pyrotechnics. He has a profound knowledge of the inner workings of harpsichords and the secrets of their fine-tuning. Haas owns the spellbindingly beautiful 1751 Henri Hemsch Harpsichord used on this recording of Bach's immortal 'Goldberg Variations.' Explaining why he chose a French harpsichord for a decidedly German work, Hass explains, 'Since the 1751 Hemsch is one of the most beautiful harpsichords in existence and its tone and mechanics are perfect, why not use it here? The interpreter's role is to make sure his French harpsichord speaks decent German.'"

WEST COAST NATURAL GAS: Two's A Pair CD (RD 008CD)
"An album full of vintage 1966-1968 music by the band that brought you the incredible 'Hashish' on the legendary San Francisco Sampler Fifth Pipe Dream. First ever release of this killer Westcoast psychedelic monster that took many years to complete!!! West Coast Natural Gas started in 1965 in Seattle. In early 1967 they went to San Francisco to work for a local music manager named Matthew Katz. Katz was the original manager for Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape and later also It's a Beautiful Day. He talked West Coast Natural Gas into signing a contract with him but being young and stupid, they didn't realize at the time that they had basically signed everything over to him. They went into the studio and recorded some original tunes: 'A Favor,' 'Go Run and Play,' 'The Jumping Frog,' 'Hashish,' 'Water or Wine,' 'Beyond This Place,' and 'Two's A Pair.' In early 1968 the band broke up and went back to Seattle. Katz released a single -- Go Run and Play / A Favor on his S.F. Sound label under the name West Coast Natural Gas. Later he released a compilation album -- the first San Francisco Sound sampler -- called Fifth Pipe Dream. The four songs mentioned before, 'Water or Wine,' 'Hashish,' 'Beyond This Place' and 'Twos A Pair' were the ones recorded by WCNG and relabeled by Katz as Indian Puddin and Pipe. This superb release includes all the above mentioned songs, plus others from acetates. As a big surprise we found another four never before heard songs. All recorded 1966 in a local Seattle Recording Studio before they even went to San Francisco, all of which are included in this great release. Apinnacle of the West Coast psychedelic acid scene."

BLACK FOREST FIRE: Transit of Venus LP (SED 059LP)
"Sedimental deviates from its carefully fostered experimental music identity to release the debut of this Austin based indie pop trio. Given the quality of the songs, the simplicity and clarity of the musicianship, and the pedigree of the musicians themselves it was a rather easy and natural decision, not mention indulging our own personal, highly eclectic tastes in the process. With its hypnotic drumming, driving bass, boy/girl dream-pop vocals, and chiming arpeggiated guitars building to swirling blasts of distorted reverb, Transit of Venus is a woefully beautiful and darkly powerful sonic commentary on a modern world gone mad."

KANDODO: Kandodo CD (THR 305CD)
"Kandodo is the solo project of Simon Price, singer/guitarist of The Heads. Price was raised in Zambia and Malawi, which left an indelible mark on him personally, and is manifest in the song titles, artwork, and name of the project. The influence is less obvious on his instrumental music, but Simon says that if there were lyrics, they'd be about animist religions, hyenas, sharks and dusty drives. Named after a Malawian supermarket that he used to shop in back in the late '80's, the debut self-titled album contains mini-sonic soundscapes that start firmly grounded and then go off into the deepest reaches of space. Along the way, Simon touches on influences as diverse as Kraftwerk, Neu!, Eno, Morricone, Stooges, Loop, and Spacemen 3."

TYRANNY, 'BLUE' GENE: Detours LP (UW 007LP)
"LP version. Limited to 250 copies with alternate artwork. Detours is 'Blue' Gene Tyranny's first album of new piano works since 2003's Take Your Time. A beautifully recorded collection of tracks composed between 2004 and 2010, Detours belongs to a rarefied class of supremely listenable and beautiful piano albums that are not encumbered by any new-age shabbiness. It possesses the sort of timeless and elegant romanticism so unpretentious and accomplished it seems to at once effortlessly canonize itself. The four pieces on Detours have their origins in disparate sources of inspiration -- a longtime friend in San Francisco, a chance visit to a Quaker meetinghouse, a choreographed dance, philosophical intuition. Harmonic discourses begin at a pre-determined location and wind up at a totally unexpected place. Tyranny is a master pianist, able to follow mood and impulse to uncharted new territory."

MONTI, MARIA: Il Bestiario CD (UW 008CD)
"First time available since its original release on the Italian Ri-Fi label, Maria Monti's 1974 LP Il Bestario is a rare item even in its native country. Monti is an Italian singer and actress with a noteworthy career, performing as a cabaret singer in the '60s, an ambitious avant-garde folk artist in the '70s, and starring in films by directors such Sergio Leone (Fistful of Dynamite) and Bernardo Bertolucci (1900) all the while. In addition to lyrics by the infamous poet Aldo Braibanti, Il Bestiario features arrangements and synthesizer from legendary avant-garde composer Alvin Curran, as well as the soprano saxophone of jazz-great Steve Lacy. The music of Il Bestiario is a prime example of 'the new art-song' of the 1970s, as Alvin Curran calls it - lush, dynamic and full of intelligence and beauty. Sourced from the original master tapes and remastered by Taylor Deupree. Strictly limited to 500 copies on CD format only. Packaged in a tip-on, mini-LP sleeve with original artwork."

"A great Italian rock classic album is finally back, here officially reissued for the very first time as an 180 gram audiophile black vinyl, with a faithful reproduction of the original release artwork. Un biglietto del tram was a bolt from the blue, an LP full of pathos from the first to the last note, full of political and social lyricism. From folk and progressive/psychedelic rock, Stormy Six evolved to the powerful hymn of 'Stalingrado', the album opening track. Their career continued until the '80s, but Un biglietto remains an unique episode in the band's discography, but also in the entire history of Italian rock music."
