KOMBINAT 100: Boeker Muhle 12" (ACKER 025EP)
The four-person combo from Mecklenburg quote many different styles, re-combining the world's music in a unique way. Inspired by the classic Western adventures of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, the galloping groove of "Iltschi & Hatatitla" is as frisky as the horses themselves. The "Vier Vögel" is a playful, lively, melodic jam session. Without losing the light-hearted atmosphere of the original, Kombinat 100 member Mollono.Bass puts in his remix a minimal emphasis on the electronic rhythm of "Iltschi & Hatatitla."

ANN AIMEE (NETHERLANDS):
VA: Inertia #1 12" (INERTIA 001EP)
Four modern techno tracks on this first release of an Ann Aimee compilation series. All four new and exclusive tracks deal in techno urgency. Delta Funktionen goes deep and dramatic, Peter Van Hoesen offers up his usual dub-wise textures, while Lindau pairs icy hi-hats with a heavy, stomping beat. Sawlin offers the trippiest techno with his delightfully disheveled "Excipidial."

JUNKIES & NATHAN BARATO, THE: The Big Smoke 12" (AREA 034EP)
Area Remote welcomes Canadian friends The Junkies and Nathan Barato to their family. The Junkies' style ranges from deep, soulful house to techno and everything in between. Nathan Barato has been a regular in the Toronto nightclub scene, gleaning inspiration from the club sounds from as far back as early '90s garage. On "Wow!," a badass bassline drills you deep into the club depths. On "For You One Time," meshed-up sound bites give you a groove to sink your teeth into.

AUDIOMATIQUE (GERMANY):
WEHBBA: 3Days 12" (AM 046EP)
Audiomatique welcomes Brazilian producer Wehbba to their roster. The groovy, sample-laden beats of "3Days" are a tribute to that very special '60s festival of fun and music. Mihalis Safras engineers a crafty remix on the flip-side, strengthening the groove further with dramatic snare shots and heavy bass surges. "Balance" shimmers and shakes across the audio spectrum. Smooth, immediate and functional, its spacey beats fuse with classic Rhodes chords in a modern deep house jam.

BECAUSE MUSIC (FRANCE):
ALKAN & BOYS NOIZE, EROL: Avalanche (Terminal Velocity) 12" (BEC 5161029)
Once again, Erol Alkan and Boys Noize have teamed up -- this time, for a stunning re-imagining of their smash single "Avalanche." The pair originally intended to commission a spoken-word interpretation -- the natural choice was the mellifluous Jarvis Cocker. On the remix tip, the duo enlisted Ewan Pearson, who re-routes proceedings to dubbed-out Berlin basement afterhours. Not to be outdone, Canblaster interprets the original as a low-slung, bleeptastic, old-school electro workout that rounds the package off in glorious style. On white vinyl.

CONNAN MOCKASIN: Faking Jazz Together 12" (BEC 5161038)
On Connan Mockasin's album Forever Dolphin Love (BEC 5772802), he dissects, inverts, and dissembles the very structures of the pop song itself. "Faking Jazz Together" is a gorgeous, leisurely amble through an enchanted forest of lush psychedelia, liquefied salsa rhythms and Mockasin's trademark alien vocals. Tom Furse from The Horrors, meanwhile, extrapolates the beats from the original and relocates them in a sprawling dub epic akin to Screamadelica-era Primal Scream, and Kompakt lynchpin Michael Mayer builds a propulsive, unpredictable, tropical-flavored anthem around Mockasin's unusual vocals.

JUSTICE: Audio, Video, Disco 2LP+CD (BEC 5161064)
Because Music presents a brand-new album from Justice, the French duo formed by Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay -- the band of a whole generation. When the two friends were still bright students in graphic design, in 2003 they made Justice a place to experiment a hybrid genre between music and image, which blends pop and electronic borders, and showcases the talents of two fascinating, passionate pop culture craftsmen, bored with hierarchy. They met Pedro Winter, who had just founded his label Ed Banger Records -- he immediately signs them after listening to "We Are Your Friends," which, with its joyful and vitamin-enriched electro beats combined with exhilarating voices, became the hymn of a whole generation and one of the most important tracks of the year 2000, celebrating a reconciliation of pop music and the dancefloor. It was awarded an MTV Video Award in 2007, bringing about the famous live TV appearance with Kanye West outraged that his million-dollar clip was outclassed by a home-made bomb. (Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, Justice, Ed Banger and So_Me became a constant source of inspiration for Kanye and his superstar rapper colleagues. Kanye even employed So-Me as director for the video for his hit song "Good Life"), Jay Z will use "D.A.N.C.E" for his next album. From now on, the duo's ascent was constant and then lightning struck: remixes for N.E.R.D., Britney Spears, Franz Ferdinand, U2, Daft Punk, Lenny Kravitz and an EP in 2006 (Waters Of Nazareth) defining the "Justice sound," this famous ultra-powerful compression of pop and baroque melodies, both dark and threatening; lightning and animative; and above all, the famous Justice image, the cross from which an earlier version figures on the first EP. 2007 was the explosion that would turn the duo into the emblem of a whole generation: their first album, anticipated like the Messiah, swept everything away as an epic soundtrack and was more than a magnificent synthesis of our time. 800,000 sales worldwide and 4 years later, the album is considered a mainstay of the 2000s -- one of the few who bridged the gap from the Pitchfork world to MTV without losing its credibility. Housed in a mindfuckingly deluxe gatefold sleeve.

BLKRTZ (CANADA):
DEADBEAT: Drawn And Quartered Remixes (Efdemin/Scuba) 12" (BLKRTZ 002EP)
Working with the source material from "First Quarter," Scuba turns in a slow-burning, sci-fi techno monster sure to appeal to fans of Monolake and his own early work. Rife with reverb-drenched sonar pings and mechanized groans in the periphery, the track lurches towards its epic crescendo like an alien-infested star ship. Efdemin transforms "Fourth Quarter" into a chugging, deep pocket house journey. Without a doubt, two floor-ready reinterpretations and a great sign of things to come from Deadbeat's new curatorial venture.

ROIL: Frost Frost CD (WEAVIL 042CD)
Bo' Weavil is excited to present the second album from the Sydney trio Roil. All three of the members of Roil, James Waples, Mike Majkowski and Chris Abrahams have been active in the Australian jazz and improvised music scenes for many years; James is possibly best known for his work in the Mike Nock Trio; Mike performs regularly with such musicians as Jon Rose and Clayton Thomas; many people would know of Chris through his work with the three-piece group The Necks. Together they have been playing as Roil since 2007, and this is their first release outside of Australia. Their music draws upon a varied palette; at times, it comes close to free jazz, at other times to experimental improv, while also referencing other styles such as minimalism, reductionism and ambient music. A Roil piece incorporates aspects of textural improvisation, bringing extended techniques to bear on a collective sound world while also being melodic and conventionally rhythmic. Bringing together the abstract and the figurative. Limited to 500 copies.

FELL, SIMON H.: Frank & Max: Bass Solos 2001-2011 CD (WEAVIL 043CD)
Bo 'Weavil presents the solo recordings of Simon H. Fell, one of the UK's finest bassists. Although currently based in France, Simon has been and still is the bass player of choice for many. These tracks were recorded over the last 10 years, which was the last time that he released some solo material (a cassette release) on his own Bruce's Finger imprint. This recording covers almost every aspect of Simon's playing -- the rhythmic strength and melodic structure of his music, to the outer regions of extended technique -- ekeing out all manner of sounds from his bass. It is a privilege to be able to release such great music. Limited to 300 copies.

HESSION/WILKINSON/FELL: Two Falls & A Submission CD (WEAVIL 044CD)
"Greetings, grapple fans" were the words that introduced Saturday afternoon wrestling on British commercial television when all three members of this trio were boys. These memorable words were spoken by a silky-voiced commentator called Kent Walton, who commentated on wrestling between 1955 and 1988. When discussing improvised music, there are three frequently-used analogies that usually come to mind: having a conversation, making love, or wrestling. Wrestling seems particularly apt when thinking about the music of Hession/Wilkinson/Fell, as the group does tend towards a playful, grappling style. This irreverence is conducive to making good music and it speaks of their ease with each other's playing that they can throw each other around and pin each other to the canvas, musically-speaking. This recording was made during a reunion tour for over 20 years of playing together, and it is their first for Bo' Weavil. They have recorded for a number of labels in the past; Fell's Bruce's Fingers imprint and Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace, but this is their first in many years. Here's hoping it's the start of many more. Limited to 350 copies.

WILKINSON, ALAN: Practice CD (WEAVIL 045CD)
Saxophonist Alan Wilkinson's first solo release Seedy Boy was released on Bruce's Fingers in 1994, which consisted of a collection of solo recordings made in a variety of situations over a number of years. Practice, on the other hand, is from two recording sessions, the first to mark the end of the carpeted cell Alan used as a practice space for some years in an old hospital in Dalston, London. The second is from the purpose-built rehearsal studios. It seemed an injustice that such a great and underrated saxophonist should not have a CD release cataloging his solo performances, so it was natural for Bo' Weavil to ask Alan to record such a project. The results are an outstanding number of pieces showing where Alan got the nickname "Iron Lungs Wilkinson," while also showing the more subtle jazz side to his playing as on Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman." Limited to 300 copies.

ROEDELIUS SCHNEIDER: Stunden CD (BB 089CD)
Stunden is the unique and unprecedented new record of instrumental music by electronic pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) and Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot, Kreidler , Mapstation). In twelve miniatures, with titles such as "Liebe", "Das Eine" and "Country," Stunden unfolds images that come across with a poetic, glorifying tranquility. Despite the use of synthesizers and amplifiers, these songs are closer to the texts of Adalbert Stifter than to the machine music of Kraftwerk. By all accounts, Roedelius' work with the likes Dieter Moebius and Michael Rother (in Cluster and Harmonia) as well as Brian Eno (on 1977's Cluster & Eno and 1978's After The Heat) are considered blueprints for today's electronica. He began releasing solo albums in 1978 and on his second album, 1979's Jardin au Fou, was already exploring the interplay between piano and electronics, a synthesis which is also the core of Stunden. Roedelius and Schneider first decided to work together at a Cluster concert in Berlin in 2007 and the idea for the album came after their first joint appearance in the Berger Kirche, a 17th Century church in Düsseldorf. The music was intended to match the location of the concert: Sounds for a vestry, to which Roedelius spoke his own texts. Stunden was created in the early months of 2010. While the initial reference for the collaboration was their concert experience, the concept gradually opened up and the lyrics fell away, until there was only one proviso: The music should be quiet -- otherwise anything goes. Stunden is a bold and inspired record, with a focus on Roedelius' piano playing while Schneider lays synthesizer sounds around it. Other pieces feature guitar, zither, digital and analog synths. Together, the pieces create an impression of pleasant vagueness. This is music for the room which opens upwards.

LIKE A STUNTMAN: YOY LP (BB 090LP)
LP version. On 180 gram vinyl; includes free download code. Like A Stuntman formed in 2001 in Frankfurt am Main. Half of the band moved to Hamburg soon thereafter. Their first album was released in 2005 on the English label Highpoint Lowlife. Then, the highly-praised Original Bedouin Culture (BB 033CD/LP) came out on Bureau B in 2009. YOY is now their third record in 11 years.

The postman rings for longer than usual. He has a poem with him, which he reads: Title: "Like A Stuntman" --
Symptoms of the ocular / Yesterday euphoria / Dog show digest.
Ooze yeah ooze / Hell, no sport / Boy campaign.
Sentimental education / A decade or less / YOY
Y-O-Y ? (or Why, Oh Why?)
He speaks the final words with elongated vowels -- the sound of an animal, a plant, an instrument. We listen reverently as the verse fades away. It's an autumn poem, without a doubt: a bit bumpy, its breadth not immediately apparent, but one senses that there is something right about it. You slip the record out of its cover and put it on. Noise. Goofy dances. Washed-out pictures, pulled too soon from the Polaroid, held in the wind, faded, warped, covered with earth, immersed in ashes, swept through the water, caught in traps. This is how the vastness, the mid-west, the coast and desert find their way into their world of sound. They understand the beauty of the surface -- that's why their music is so iridescent. Amongst it is a crafty rustling, an oscillation, linking the songs. Sounds hover behind water, the vocal goes haywire. Discordant harmonies.

DICK DIVER: New Start Again LP (CH 092LP)
LP version. New Start Again, the debut album by Melbourne foursome Dick Diver, is warm and understated, shot through with casual grace and supported by real backbone. It's an intriguing combination of widescreen Australian sweep, '70s New York edge and '90s indie-rock scratch that transcends its influences to become truly honest and exciting. The respectively wry and poetic songwriting of guitarists Rupert Edwards and Alistair McKay lobs Dick Diver up alongside Go-Betweens heroes Forster & McLennan, while their often epic fretwork bears echoes of Television and Yo La Tengo. But bassist Al Montfort's impeccable punk pedigree (UV Race, Total Control, Straightjacket) roughs up the band's bookish proclivities, while drummer Steph Hughes brings a similarly frayed-edge appeal. Her background in bands from Children Collide to Boomgates gives the band an offhand, subtly swinging charm. Their first EP, 2009's Arks Up, enjoyed Triple J rotation and community radio thrashing, and brought shows with Stephen Malkmus and a Boogie Festival appearance, amongst other plaudits. Rupert and Al Mc hogged the songwriting duties on the EP, but New Start Again, recorded with Eddy Current Suppression Ring's Mikey Young at an old homestead in country Victoria, is a much more even-handed affair. The band share songwriting, swap instruments, and introduce new sounds like pedal steel, piano, and slide guitar. Steph and Al Monty's title-track duet, especially, provides a laidback, cheeky counterpoint to their bandmates' more considered efforts. Rupert, meanwhile, provides lovelorn-but-snappy first single "Through The D" and sook-pop classic "On The Bank," while Al Mc displays impressionistic lyrical flair on tracks like "Hammock Days" and "Seagulls." And on closing track "Head Back," the four loosen their collars to create probably the funnest five minutes of music released in Australia this year.

REBOLLEDO: Super Vato CD (COMEME 001CD)
Mexico's finest Mauricio Rebolledo has found a road to new frontiers because nobody beats the drum like him. Since his first appearance on the Cómeme label, he emerged as one of the most spotlighted figures out of the furious tribe of DJs, producers, and connoisseurs of the art of living. His unpredictable DJ sets have always been good for some fresh groove adventures -- be it tripping dark '80s disco, techno, funk, cosmic, synth-wave, or Latin EBM-style. His home is La Pitaya -- an area in the woods not far from the town Xalapa, the famous "Ciudad de las Flores" in the south-east of Mexico. Rebolledo headed south, went to the coastal town Playa Del Carmen, and opened the bar Corvette Ninja. He also hooked up with the legendary club La Santanera, where he met the Kompakt artists Tobias Thomas., Michael Mayer, Superpitcher and Matias Aguayo during his DJ residency. They all befriended him and took him under their wings to work on some fierce dance music. The result was the first Cómeme release, Bo Jack/Pitaya Frenesi -- an infectious double A-side EP that earned worldwide applause and took the dancefloors by storm. Since then, Rebolledo's life changed entirely. He designed the club, TOPAZdeluxe in the north east Mexican town Monterrey which he co-runs and curates. He travels constantly to South America, spends his summers in Europe, is half of the duo Pachanga Boys (with Superpitcher). His heart remains with the Cómeme tribe, blazing new trails in the dance music universe with a polyrhythmic, jacking sound-kaleidoscope that ranges from cúmbia, techno, disco, kwaito, cosmic, to house. In this family of fearless musicians, Rebolledo created a trademark sound that he describes as music that is inspired by the emotions that emerge when he listens to the power of The Warriors movie theme, the energy of "Billy Jean's" beat, the drive of the bass synth in Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase," the dark motion of the bass rhythm that drives "Thriller," and the anger of the snare drum of a Mexican military march. But the DJ and producer can't boogie alone. That's why he has delivered Super Vato -- an album of ten hypnotic tracks that pool together all temptations of the night. Cinematic beat music, full of psychedelic drill. A record like a John Carpenter movie: foggy, dark, thrilling, and full of scary special effects. Created with a '70s vintage Woody organ, Hammond rhythm machine, shakers, cowbells, and the Mexican donkey jaw and fuelled by marching drums, synths, percussion, and roaring car engines. With the help of befriended singers and musicians such as Rodrigo Cano, Matias Aguayo, Superpitcher, Diegors, Raquel Wolff, Miriam Torres, and Philipp Gorbachev, he grooves towards a new horizon and keeps it raw and basic. A record that absorbs you the more and more you listen to it.

Together they have created a sexy and classy groove which brings back fond memories of the golden days of New York house. POPOVICIU, MIHAI: Backsoul 12" (INTAC 035EP)
Romanian Mihai Popoviciu is considered one of the most innovative eastern European producers of electronic music today. Sucked into the rave scene of the '90s, then infected by the techno and house virus compelled him to begin producing music in 2001. Since then, he's steadily added chapters to his success story either with solo projects or collaborations. Just like his music, his DJ sets have a distinctive, personal touch, delivering a balanced mix of groovy beats, warm pads and addictive musical emotions.

DJ HELL: Teufelswerk House Remixes CD (GIGOLO 270CD)
Remixes from Hell's multi-selling masterpiece Teufelswerk (GIGOLO 250CD/LP) by all the hot names in the scene. It's been 25 years since Helmut Geier alias DJ Hell set the needle on a house track. He's been DJing house and techno in all shapes and colors ever since. It's been nearly 20 years that he released his first 12" My Definition Of House. And he launched his own imprint International Deejay Gigolos Empire 15 years ago. Time to celebrate. Time for a massive world-tour. DJ Hell represents house from Germany like no one else. He made a case for Chicago house early on in his career by playing it obsessively in his DJ sets. Amid brand new tracks, he released long-lost classics by Bobby Konders and DJ Pierre on Gigolo Records. Just in time, house is experiencing a new high. Naturally, Hell is no purist when it comes to house music. He has covered lots of ground when it comes to electronic dance music, making records with P. Diddy, Grace Jones and Bryan Ferry. He has compiled two brilliant CDs full of German new wave, and of course, he knows of the influence that Kraftwerk and the disco sound of Munich, his hometown, has had on house and techno. His music and DJ sets all reflect this knowledge. Most importantly: he knows how to rock a party. A DJ does not only celebrate himself, he celebrates the artists he respects. So it's fitting that in tandem with the tour, there is the release of 35 Teufelswerk remixes from artists handpicked by Hell, chopped up in three big chunks. The first portion is called House Remixes and there will be a party in Berlin's legendary Tresor Club to celebrate its release. Artists include: Toni Lionni, Deniz Kurtel & Wolf+Lamb, Peter Kruder, Zander VT, Ian Pooley, Andre Lodemann, Axel Boman, DJ Glen and Solomun.

OSTGUT TON (GERMANY):
PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS: The Messenger 2x12" (OSTGUT 010LP)
2x12" version, featuring 9 out of 12 tracks from the CD. The Planetary Assault Systems project has been active for some 15 years now, channeling an exploratory theme into cutting-edge, non-conformist techno for the clubs but also for listening at home. His previous album for Ostgut Ton, Temporary Suspension (OSTGUT 009CD/004LP), re-instated that classic P.A.S sound and found the dexterous artist touring even more with this tougher, purist techno aesthetic. And yet again, Slater maintains his prolific output with the announcement of The Messenger. In his own words, it's a project that stays very true and honest to the Planetary Assault Systems goal: a journey of discovery, to create new sounds which are not otherwise present in club music at this time. There's a strong club element present here -- Slater play-tested all the tracks and employed a careful editing process to make sure they all fit the description. Highly playable works of club-intended sound art, early heavy moments like "Bell Blocker" or the playful "Wriss." The drum barrage of "Rip The Cut" speaks directly to the dancefloor, perhaps the most rhythmically-intense moment of the album, which is not to be put lightly as the rolling, filtering tones of "Cold Bolster" and "Black Tea" urge us further into perfectly frenetic moments.

DETTMANN, MARCEL: Translation 12" (OSTGUT 052EP)
One of the founding members of the Ostgut Ton family, Marcel Dettmann presents a new EP. "Barrier" documents Dettmann's unique textured sound design before diving into "Translation One," a frantic, quivering and snaking snapshot into the kind of techno the producer stands for these days. The sinister sci-fi tones of "Translation Two" warble and jive in glorious syncopation, its meandering theme hanging deliciously between paranoia and positivity. On "Planning," Dettmann further explores his inclination for intricate, tripping synth patterns.

TAJ MAHAL TRAVELLERS: August 1974 2LP (ASH 3049LP)
Gatefold 2LP version. Originally issued as a double LP with each of the 4 tracks being roughly the same length as the side of a record, August 1974 presents the Taj Mahal Travellers at their most sophisticated. Although their stunning cosmic music was always improvised, the band, formed in 1969 by "six meta-music creators and one electronic engineer" played regularly throughout Japan and eventually found their way to Europe where they met up with avant-garde musicians such as Don Cherry. 1974 would be the band's last official release as they went their separate ways the following year with all but Takehisa Kosugi, leaving music behind them. Each track is distinct from the others, with several beginning with clearly-defined structure before departing into the realms of the abstract, with violin, harmonica, bass, tuba, trumpet and mandolin dueting in a subliminal and obscure manner. "Voices" both subhuman and supernatural, resonate with a universal inner voice. Includes original insert. Hand-numbered limited edition of 1000; on 180 gram vinyl.

BNJMN: Black Square LP (RH DC10-LP)
After debuting in early 2011 with his Plastic World album, BNJMN returns with his second album, Black Square. With Black Square, BNJMN evolves into a more fluid production style, largely by allowing more space into his music. By keeping his drums more sparse and light, his music takes even more of a serene, futuristic quality. A modern electronic classic, we dare to say. Braindance, anybody? Although a quick comparison is made between his music and that of early '90s UK electronica, BNJMN states that he is trying to stay current and not be influenced by the past, rather making music which is all about the moment. He is also not too bothered about being connected to what else is going on in the musical world. Instead, he prefers to let himself be inspired by his surroundings which are those of the sea and nature around Bournemouth, on the south coast of England, which definitely comes out in his music. All in all, this should remind you of another young lad from the south of England, who had his start some 20 years ago.

HIVE MIND: Elemental Disgrace LP (SP 009LP)
Elemental Disgrace is an album that needs to happen now. Finally, the next phase has arrived -- a stunning double side-long record of some of the U.S.' best underground synthesizer music. Whatever rise to the synthesizer came later on in the '00s is hardly of any concern to Greh Holger and his Hive Mind project. Having released private press cassettes of solo synth works as far back as 2002, Hive Mind exists as enigmatic in the world of new-jack synth-heads and the tidal wave of "neo kosmische" flying far under the radar. The silence is now broken and here we are treated to some of the most unique sounds Spectrum Spools has yet presented. No blisscapes to be found here. No soaring latched arpeggios, no cosmic vistas. Not a single melody. This is two sides of ancestral ruin in its clearest and most focused presentation. The brutality of the Earth and the harsh reality of all that it holds. Unknowable sounds -- that of the dawn of the Earth, or perhaps the sound of its demise. A toxic swamp of chemicals and mutated creatures left behind long after man has wiped himself away for good. Field recordings from the end of the world. While others are racing for the stars, Hive Mind's tectonic plate-shifting and brutal rumble will give you a brand new way to look at modern synthesizer composition. With a focus on textural sounds and shifting frequency registers, this album gives the listener a full range of listening possibilities with infinite replay value. It's worth noting that Spectrum Spools as a label would not exist without Hive Mind. An inspiration and a pioneer in the U.S. synthesizer circuit, it's with pleasure and honor that they release Elemental Disgrace into the world. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin August 2011.

KORAY, ERKIN: Meçhul: Singles & Rarities LP (SF 067LP)
LP gatefold limited edition release. Erkin Koray and Sublime Frequencies are pleased to present this collection of rare tracks and lesser-heard singles. All tracks were recorded and released in Turkey between 1970-1977 and culled from Koray's personal vinyl collection. Includes exclusive photos and remastered audio. What more is there to say about Erkin Koray? An iconic guitar and songwriting genius. A voice of gold. Having founded the country's first-ever rock and roll group in 1957, he is regarded worldwide as the father of Turkish rock. Forging Western sounds with his own inimitable musical mastery, he self-produced singles and LPs throughout the 1960s and 1970s that shook and altered Turkish society. Erkin didn't stop at rock and roll. Over time, he began to find inspiration in folk sounds from Turkey's Anatolian interior, and radio broadcasts received from Egypt and Lebanon. He looked to the East from his West-leaning Istanbul perch, and began incorporating these sounds into his own work. This amalgamation was as unprecedented and unorthodox in Istanbul at the time as rock and roll itself had been in the 1950s. The resulting hybrid sound ignited what became known as the Arabesque music movement in Turkey -- which continues to this day. While Erkin has recorded and performed tirelessly throughout the years (both as a solo artist, and with the powerful groups he formed), his extensive back catalog only began to be explored by the international community in the 1990s. He is now recognized as one of the foremost global leaders of psychedelic, folk rock, pop and balladry. His music has stood the test of time more than many of his Western contemporaries and influences have managed to, and his prolific work ethic has not ceased. He continues to live and breathe music, performing epic concerts, and continuously plotting new recordings and strategies. His vision and integrity, coupled with his pronounced world views and inherent musical greatness, have made him the unique and magnificent living legend he is today. This collection features tracks not found on the many unauthorized Erkin compilations and LP reissues that have emerged in the West over the years. Ranging from the sublime to the surreal, these tracks offer an essential glimpse into the extensive repertoire of the great Erkin Koray. --Mark Gergis, July, 2011

ILLUHA: Shizuku CD (12K 1067CD)
"12k presents Shizuku, the debut album from Illuha (a play off the word 'island' in Portugese) comprised of Tokyo residents Corey Fuller and Tomoyoshi Date. Shizuku was recorded in a 100-year old church in Bellingham, Washington and the duo used ambient and quad-microphone techniques to capture the natural acoustics of the high-vaulted ceilings, wooden floors, stained glass and the natural resonances of the space. A beautiful variety of instruments were used to create the soft tones of the album at once like liquid and at the same time like air. Pipe organ, vibraphone, dulcimer, accordion, rhodes, piano, and analog synthesizer are only a selection of what was used to create the rich, and tonally warm sound of the album. It's as if movements and textures were dropped into the ocean to let float around and combine with others that touched. Field recordings and the most delicate touch of computer processing give a modern feel to this electro-acoustic world. In a bit of a departure for 12k, the fourth song on the album features spoken word from renowned Japanese Tanka poet Tadahito Ichinoseki. A deeply moving poem, essentially one about Christmas; silence, god, birth, death, Ichinoseki's raw, vulnerable voice carries over a tonal backdrop that gradually swells in intensity with plucked string harmonics and soft, echoing percussion. Artist John Friesen also adds cello on tracks 2 and 3. The deeply encompassing and personal sound of Shizuku is by no coincidence. During the year it was recorded both artists underwent intense personal pain and happiness as well as the earthquake that rocked their lives in March of 2011. Shizuku stands as an emotional release for the artists that clearly comes through in its progressions, carefully played sounds and enveloping atmosphere."

Finally, the Korallreven boys wrap things up with a massive expansion of their original-- an evolving, layered rhythm section lays the foundation for ecstatic builds of shimmering, hazy synths."

"A quartet from Rome, though their singer Vincenzo 'Lord Enzo' Massetti came from Naples, they debuted with a single in 1971. The album, simply called I Teoremi, is one of the rarest Italian prog-era albums, though not a proper prog LP, as it contains a hard rock inspired sound in the same style as early Rovescio della Medaglia. It was released in 1972 on the small Polaris label, that also produced the Alpha ralpha boulevard LP by I Numi, and contains seven self-penned tracks, mostly in the hard rock vein, with light prog influences as in the long 'Mare della tranquillita', the only track including piano. A very good album whose original copies are worth a fortune. An incredibly rare album, this reissue is a perfect replica of the original one, with a textured gatefold cover and a flap on the right side as the original."

"Trinity represents the second installation in The Unheard Music Series efforts to resurrect Joe McPhee's early '70's work on the CjR label, soon to be completed with Underground Railroad and Pieces Of Light. This brilliant trio recording of blues inflected out-soul from '73 follows up on hugely successful Nation Time, recorded a year later. Originally issued in '73 in an edition of 1000, Trinity has not available since. John Corbett has remastered Trinity from original tapes; the LP had to be severely compressed to squeeze all the music on to it, but in the digital realm restoration of all the sweet space was possible. Hence, Trinity has never sounded so fantastic! Featured are a long drum and tenor duet section (with McPhee breaking new ground on the horn), and a fantastic piece dedicated to Albert Ayler, with McPhee overdubbed on soprano sax and pocket cornet. SUN RA: Nuclear War CD (ALP 222CD)
2011 repress, originally reissued 2001. "Nuclear War stands as one of the great monuments in the latter part of Sun Ra's enormous oeuvre. It's an LP that by all rights should have been one of his breakthroughs, featuring one of the tightest versions of the Philadelphia-era Arkestra in a program that includes an appealing mix of standards and Ra originals. The title track is arguably to the '80s what 'Space Is The Place' was to the '70s . Ra's anthem for the decade, a piece that perfectly reflected certain apocalyptic aspects of his philosophy and his underlying quest for a better future. Ra thought very highly of this recording. He personally approached Columbia Records, certain that it was a winner, and when they didn?t opt to issue it he reportedly became depressed and bitter. Eventually, Ra sold the music to an outfit called Y Records. Y was a very interesting British independent label whose catalogue included important post-punk LPs by the Pop Group and the Slits, some outstanding reggae and a couple of records of improvised music. In London at the beginning of the '80s, musical worlds were colliding, and people like Steve Beresford and David Toop actively crossed all kinds of genre borders, confusing rock and dub and jazz and noise. Y Records producer Dick O'Dell first put out 'Nuclear War' as a 12-inch single -- the idea of Ra on an extended play disco plate was, in its own way, sheer brilliance! -- b/w the glorious June Tyson vehicle 'Sometimes I'm Happy,' and two years later the full record was issued on Y Records in Italy. But the LP never went into full distribution and as a result the few copies that trickled into circulation became some of the rarest entries in Ra's discography."

"Na Hawa Doumbia's La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol. 3 marks the first release for new label Awesome Tapes From Africa, a blog and DJ project known worldwide for shedding light on obscure and wonderful musical treasures from the African continent. This early recording--made in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 1982--captures the dualities inherent in Doumbia's music early on: from a stripped-down, raw backdrop arise warm sonics; expressions of feminism and social issues imparted through spare refrains. Doumbia's urgent, distinctive vocals and hypnotic didadi rhythm from her native Bougouni have made her a respected voice in Mali for more than three decades. Today she is best known for her contributions to Wassoulou music. The singer was raised by her grandmother--her mother died shortly after giving birth. But before passing away she predicted Doumbia would be a singer--something surprising, since she didn't come from the jeli (or griot) caste of hereditary singers. Her grandparents resorted to the magical powers of blacksmiths to fight it, but ultimately the prediction proved correct. Doumbia's music is more powerful than magic."

Anderson's The Little Mermaid, composed by Zdenek Liska (The Cremator/Fruits of Paradise) featuring Lenka Korinkova. Liska's legacy in the history of European cinema is huge in volume but relatively modest in its celebrity. Having already composed nine scores for Kachyna's films to add to his 1976 filmography of 150 completed soundtracks. Mala Morska Vila is one of the most idiosyncratic and haunting undiscovered scores in the annals of European cinematic history. Beautifully remastered from the original mastertapes with the full cooperation of the seminal Barrandov studios in Prague."

VANNIER, JEAN-CLAUDE: Roses Rouge Sang CD (BMS 037CD)
"Exactly 40 years since the release of Histoire De Melody Nelson (his seminal and essential Serge Gainsbourg collaboration) Jean-Claude Vannier, France's most lorded arranger and composer of orchestral funk-rock and pop returns to the same artistic territory that has since come to represent his most iconic period and continually inspire five inclusive generations of experimental rock luminaries. The signature sound of JCV, complete with his brooding orchestral sweeps, pensive drum-drops, loudly plucked bass and biting clavinet has earned him a firm fixture in the top-ten album lists of virtually everyone with a passing interest in latter-day European rock and conceptual music. But don't call it a comeback. Unlike the many re-dux events or commercial updates of passed classics that we have recently come to expect, the latest LP by Jean Claude Vannier simply extends the authentic vintage winning-formula which he truly owns with utmost attention to every last detail. As pop music and technology changes with time some things are best left in their purest form which is why 40 years later JCV has returned to the same studio hands, with the same musicians and the same crystal clear vision that simply can't be equaled, despite the countless attempts. This all new LP comprises a personnel of the legendary European session players that appeared on classic Vannier & Gainsbourg scores such as Cannabis, La Horse, Slogan and Les Chemins de Katmandu as well as Melody Nelson itself, and his own bizarre and mythical follow-up LP, the truly bizarre 1973 avant-garde ballet L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches (which was finally rescued from obscurity in 2005 by Finders Keepers as the labels debut release). The rhythm section line-up for the album alone reads like a European record collectors wet dream."

VANNIER, JEAN-CLAUDE: Electro Rapide CD (BMS 038CD)
Subtitled: Experimental Pop Instrumentals From Jean-Claude Vannier's Vintage Vaults. "Electro Rapide is a collection of rare and unreleased archive material from the studio vaults of legendary French orchestral pop composer Jean-Claude Vannier. Taken from the period before and during his revered creative period with Serge Gainsbourg, these tracks reveal rare glimpses of Vannier's self initiated instrumental projects which were crowbarred between an air-tight studio diary as one of Frances most in-demand arrangers and composers of the post Mai 68 generation. Electro Rapide combines a mixture of JCVs familiar trade-mark motifs and stylings from his coveted work for idiosyncratic French pop vocalists (such as Briggitte Fontaine, Claude Nougaro, Leonie and Anna St Clair) with the seldom heard experimental music for ballets, fashion shows as well as his infamous film music (such as the soundtracks for Cannabis and La Horse). Electro Rapide reveals a young Vannier in his embryonic stages before the birth of a true individual orch, pop funk legend, comprising some exclusive and previously unheard tracks alongside music culled from rare library music LPs, kids' records, radio themes and his earliest soundtrack work. This archive is the closest Jean-Claude Vannier fans will get to a lost instrumental LP outside of his previous Finders Keepers Insolitudes release and his conceptual Georges Brassens tribute LP and features his favored long-running session band featuring Arpardys & Brutus Drums percussionist Alain Pierre D'ahan and magma guitarist Claude Engel in their earliest assemblage. Utilizing a vibrant palette of sonic ingenuity JCV combines pulpit percussion, scholastic instruments and a host of oblique international sounds to create a unique breed of French instro pop that went on to influence future generations of international progressive and cinematic music."

PERRI, SANDRO: Impossible Spaces CD (CST 085CD)
"Ronen Givony is a New York City music curator and writer and the following is excerpted from a text he wrote to accompany the release of Impossible Spaces. After four years of writing, recording, and self-production, Impossible Spaces has delivered on the promise so abundantly present in Sandro Perri's earlier work; and with it, a synthesis of the experimental, electronic and singer-songwriter modes that have marked his evolution as an artist. On first listen, Impossible Spaces seems to position itself self-consciously as a collection of music about other music. In this sense, we can think of the album as one listener's personal map of music history, with various voices, phrases, and personalities materializing to guide a song for an instant before disappearing again. Upon further listening, however, and true to its title, the album reveals itself as something more conflicted, and seemingly contradictory: a six-part meditation on the binaries of absence and presence, the possible and impossible, with a symmetrical internal structure reflecting this back-and-forth dialogue from one song to the next, and an emotional push-and-pull within the personality of the singer and songwriter himself."

PINEY GIR: Geronimo! CD (DAMGOOD 379CD)
"You know what? It's time for some straight-talking: Piney Gir put the cowboy boots away, shelved the stylophone beatbox, and hit the loudest 12-string open-E chord you ever did hear. Piney Gir released her debut album Peakahokahoo on Truck Records in 2004. She was then the singer and guitarist of all-girl, art-rock, cult faves the Schla La Las. Now Kansas' most unique songwriter returns with her finest album to date. Geronimo! is pure pop brilliance, a tell-it-to-the-Byrds journey into heartbreak, friendship and new love. After these forty minutes you'll have caught the sun and people will ask you where you've been on holiday. And the answer will be 'I went to LA in the '60s via the Plastic Ono Band with a twist of Captain Beefheart. I drank the Kool-Aid and I'll never be the same again.' From the quit-the-bar-hit-the-road verve of 'Let's Get Silly', to the romantic opener 'Outta Sight', you're going to remember why true love matters and why pop music, at least, will never run off with someone else."

"James Ferraro paints a 21st century still life on his debut album for Hippos In Tanks. The record is called Far Side Virtual. Each song, a melodious reflection of the moment now, comes shrink-wrapped in HD fidelity as glossy as a 2012 Toyota Prius. Ferraro's muse is some enigmatic modern metropolis, where the streets are as slick as i-Pads, and where the symphonies ring with Macbook message alerts. Through the steam rising from our latte mocha chinos, he invites us to gaze out at the dreamy disorientation of our digital lives. Imagine a Darius Milhuad-guided tour of 5th Avenue. Imagine a Whole Foods bakery that sells only cakes emblazoned with frosting replicas of Camille Pissarro's 'Haying at Eragny.' These are the surreal utopias Ferraro brings to life with sixteen swirly-pop concoctions sure to sell out at the candy stores. So slip in your ear buds, and welcome to Far Side Virtual." "Important Records is proud to issue the fourth album, second for Important, from Nathan Amundson's Rivulets. With a beautifully authentic emotional depth Nathan's voice is his most compelling instrument, a tool for delivering pure emotion from his heart straight into yours. Representing five years of work and nearly constant touring, this album reflects the intense nature of Rivulets as a three piece. If you haven't seen them on tour this record will come as a revelation. Recorded, appropriately, at the Sacred Heart Music Center, a cathedral built in the late nineteenth century."
"The title is just a phrase that kept popping up in my head as we were recording. It reflects the feeling and atmosphere of the songs in some ways but probably has more to do with my own frustration with the world -- with people and politics and the lack of any meaningful or lasting change. And just being sick of nobody out there saying anything at all. Just this completely vapid cultural/musical landscape. You know, I'm on the fringes anyway; I may as well say what I mean. We're Fucked is not intended as the end of the discussion, but the beginning. It's 'We're fucked. Now what?'" --Nathan Amundson

MERCURY REV: Deserter's Songs LP (MCR 900LP)
"Fully cementing Mercury Rev's rebirth as purveyors of a cosmic brand of the popular American songbook, Deserter's Songs is an album of grandiose proportions. Merging jazz, folk, sweeping orchestration, and a dose of '60s rock, the album was intended as the band's swan song and therefore made with utter abandon. However, it became the band's most acclaimed platter and remains one of the essential records of the past 25 years. Deserter's Songs was released to huge worldwide acclaim and went on to be named album of the year in 1998 by NME, MOJO and many other publications, quickly propelling the legendary iconoclasts into living rooms worldwide and pioneered the launch of a new genre of music, heard today in bands like Arcade Fire and Beirut. Originally released on V2 Records, Deserter's is Light In The Attic Records' impassioned choice to launch their new imprint, Modern Classics Recordings. Specializing in contemporary reissues from 1980 to today, Modern Classics will re-release your all-time favorite discs pressed on virgin black vinyl, the way they should be heard. Modern Classics' Deserter's Songs is the first LP reissue of this landmark album, long overdue if you ask us. Beautiful audio re-master comes courtesy of co-producer and original Mercury Rev member David Fridmann, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and housed in an expanded gatefold jacket with 4-page insert. Each copy will receive a free download card for two live tracks plus an exclusive audio commentary/interview with the band while 100 randomly selected albums will include a photo personally autographed by Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper."

BRONZE: Copper LP (RVNGNL 010LP)
"Stream-of-consciousness lyrical cooing and restrained analog trickery rest atop constant cog rotation grooves on Copper. These elements yield a truly conductive album, abundant in compositions that beg for a listener's oxidizing ear. Commencing with 'A Showdown Of Sorts', the record assumes a vague narrative aided by the allure of Tuxedomoon / Ralph Records-y exoticism, albeit less claustrophobic. 'Showing Them' staggers into even Wierd-er territory, with eye flashes and spots of Legendary Pink Dots. 'So Slow' and 'The Rouge Became' are sister tracks fallen not far from the same Silver Apple(s) tree. 'Wits' and 'Fumes In Suits' counter clockwork like a high-pressure Units track and place Copper in the lexicon of San Fran synthesized and syncopated anti-stardom. Each vinyl copy of Copper comes with a copper ring. The ring is intended to be worn to BRONZE performances or even during daily rituals. While wearing the ring, you, the ring bearer, are encouraged to speak informally - if not offensively - with fellow ring mates. When overheard or confronted, blame it on the ring - i.e. 'It was the copper talking.' The ring will initially turn your finger green. The ring will also heal your wounds, correct your balance and is a fashionable accessory to boot."

"Once in a while a single gets plucked out of obscurity which is a total revelation and becomes an obsession to track down, but rarely does this same single get played over and over and you know it has the staying power to remain a firm favorite forever. I am very glad to say that this single is one of these rare beasts. It is everything you could ever wish for and absolutely ticks all the right boxes. How to put a tag on 'Gotta Get Louder'? It sits somewhere between proto-punk, bubblegum/hard rock and powerpop. It's insanely catchy and an instant exuberant classic. What makes this even more amazing is that most of the band was 15 at the time! 'I Won't Be Back' is stupendous in its snotty teenage punk attitude. I was thinking of the Runaways as I believed a girl singer was involved, but this is not the case as explained by Nick Piunti 'that would be me, make that pre-pubescent me.' The guitars clang and crash, the drums are full power with added momentum of a glorious cowbell nailing everything down to the beat. So put both tracks together and you end up with the best coupling since Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton!" --Robin Wills (PurePop)

PUMPHOUSE GANG: Pumphouse Gang LP (SING 035LP)
"Formed from the ashes of a mid-'70s rock band called Horse, the founding members of Pumphouse Gang - Ricky Wreckage (vocals), Ralph Von Wau Wau (bass), SG Coolbridge (guitar) and Dread 'Family Man' Jones (drums) were active on the fringes of the UK punk scene as early as late 1976. The band made regular trips from their base in Ryde on the Isle Of Wight to play London's live circuit at venues like The Marquee, The Speakeasy and The Nashville, and on the same bill as acts like Generation X, Fabulous Poodles, The Lurkers and The Only Ones. This album features the best of Pumphouse Gang's material for Splash Records, including eight tracks never previously released on vinyl. Lost classics like 'When We Were Young', 'Black And White' and 'Teenage Lament' together with those now highly collectable Splash singles only emphasise how wrong the record buying public were to ignore the band back then. BLACK HUMOR: Love God, Love One Another LP (SV 001LP)
"Black Humor was an experimental rock band from San Francisco in the early '80s (not to be confused with 'blackhumor,' alias of noise artist Frazer Hall). They released just one, very hard to find LP on Fowl Records in 1982. Only 1,000 records were pressed, each with unique handmade covers: thick slabs of paint, collage, parrot feathers, dirt, whatever else happened to be lying around their Tenderloin flat. Many of these have since gone for high, collector prices or ended up in oblivion. Existing in a parallel universe to other bands of the era, Black Humor's music is filled with jarring images of urban decay and desperation, bass-driven melodies, and layers of dissonant guitar and percussion. And perhaps the only known recording of a parrot that was taught to say 'Fuck You.' This first time reissue uses the originally intended artwork for the album cover. Fully authorized and mastered from the original analog tapes. Includes new insert with liner notes by singer George Miller and engineer Tom Mallon. Hand-stenciled and numbered. Limited to 500."

AIRAKSINEN, PEKKA: One Point Music LP (ORO 035LP)
"Pekka Airaksinen started making music in the late 1960s with the group the Sperm, combining performance art with experimental music of the day. With influences such as John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen, the Sperm combined free jazz and psychedelic pop to create a sound resembling early industrial music and noise. After the Sperm's breakup in the '70s, Pekka Airaksinen became a Buddhist and would stop releasing music for almost a decade. Airaksinen, who was regarded as a recluse, returned to the public eye in the mid-80s under his own name and with a brand new but equally futuristic vision. His album Buddhas of Golden Light is an incredible mixture of Sun Ra's cosmic free jazz and twisted rhythms programmed on a Roland 808 drum machine. At the end of the decade techno elevated the 808 to a fetish object and Airaksinen disappeared for another five years. In the '90s Airaksinen released a large number of CD's and CD-R's on his own Dharmakustannus label, on which the style of each track varied wildly - breaking every rule of the niche-group marketing concepts of the era. All his recordings, whether they are his unique interpretations of contemporary music, new age, ambient house or jazz, are characterized by a sense of improvisation and casual roughness that is rare in electronic music. The most avant-garde pieces of his recent output continue his earlier work with the imaginary 'anthropoid music' of the future. One Point Music is his shining moment. Originally pressed in an edition of 120, this reissue has been needed for a long time." Includes an insert with Ilpo Saunio.

"Most-sincere moments of unmediated clarity/genius from improvisational psych-rock collective Ya Ho Wa 13. Father Yod's spiritual encirclement and their well-jocked music tends to be discombobulated at best, but these songs record a very different story: brahmanic ascension, heart-wrenching expression, a beautiful simplicity and sincerity that shines through immediately and captivates with our first utterances of astonishment. This, my children, is the real art. 'Pain' & 'A Thousand Sighs' can go blow for blow with the most celebrated of the 1970's rock/psych/experimental cannon, moments of revelation that break through the cult of personality and attempt something much more universal than a simple exercise in improvisation. An essential release."

Continuing further into the territories of domesticated English voudou sketched out by 2009's Revenants, Prodigies & The Restless Dead (WEAVIL 039CD), UK guitarist C Joynes' Congo is dominated by notions of landscape, imagination and personal ritual. However, while elements of introspection and intensity do appear, the mood is one of simple, uplifting joy. Warm, woody sounds and themes for a variety of donated, rescued and homemade instruments contrast with occasional stark arrangements, bursts of blossoming electricity, and passages of dense improvisation. Contributions from friends and colleagues generate momentum and interplay at key points, enabling these recordings to site the loner aesthetic within the traditions of social music for dancing and communion.

The surprisingly catchy tracks are effortlessly held together with an aggressive house beat, which even turns the jazzy, crazy homage to Coltrane entitled "Jupiter Variations" into a floor-filler.

"Get High" is a new track release from Laid Back. The lyrics may instantly lead your mind onto thinking of cannabis, but try to think about it in a broader context. Musically, the groove is kept groovy, with an updated twist. Danish electronic musician and DJ Kasper Bjørke has done a really cool remix. There's also a space mix, for those who like to get out there and more into it.

EXTRAWELT: In Aufruhr 3LP (COR 028LP)
3LP version. From Soopertrack on Border Community in 2006 to the Titelheld EP that same year and the album Schöne Neue Extrawelt (COR 019CD/LP) from the year 2008, which belong to the best-selling releases on Cocoon, the two Hamburg residents Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe have skyrocketed their reputations to become two of the most style-forming techno protagonists within the last ten years. "We don't want cowardly Zeitgeist Techno. We want to be courageous and dare new sounds and melodies. Sunrise scenarios, energy, revolution and 'Kaputtheit' -- these are all parts of the Extrawelt," the two musicians once said, and this artistic credo applies to their long-awaited second Extrawelt album, too. "We took our time and have collected tracks that have particularly touched us, no matter whether they are club-compatible or not. Besides that, we didn't want to repeat ourselves, and have created a unique second album that stands for itself." Without doubt, the two have succeeded in this. The spectrum of musical influences has again extended and the most diverse styles of electronic music connect seamlessly with the Extrawelt spirit. Here, the sonic Zeitgeist is not the determining variable for the music -- what really counts is the creation of nothing more and nothing less than a new world, by means of a never-exhausting acoustic imagination which shows new facets, even after the thousandth time of listening. This is a masterful album from an incredibly refreshing duo.

VATH, SVEN: In The Mix: The Sound Of The Twelfth Season 2CD (CORMIX 037LTD)
Sven Väth is co-founder of the Cocoon label, and this is The Sound Of The Twelfth Season. With the Cocoon Heroes, Sven Väth's techno tribe entered a new stage in its never-ending metamorphosis. Fuelled by the communicative energies of the social networks of the internet, the Cocoon is opening up, declaring ravers and performing artists, dancers and helpers part of the Cocoon as well. With the Cocoon club, Väth and his companions created a new type of club which fused sound and space into one immersive experience. Having realized that the daily life in the big cities compromises partying without limits, they set up a second home each summer at Club Amnesia on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza. The "Sounds Of The Season" series is an aural photo album and a compressed culmination at the same time. The love for electronic music is the driving force of all Cocoon's endeavors. The Sound Of The 12th Season is an orgiastic techno feast of the biggest names, including: Efdemin, DJ Koze, Dense & Pika, Levon Vincent, Boys Noize, Justin Vandervolgen, Todd Terje, Mark E, Château Flight, Aufgang, Clark, Gary Beck, Benoit & Sergio, Acquiescence, Roman Flügel, Move D, Omar S, Steffi, Virginia, Gerd, Osunlade, Âme, Allì Borèm, Maceo Plex, Anthony Collins, Philip Bader, Matt John and Re. CONFORCE: Escapism CD (DSR 090CD)
Holland's deep electronic specialist Conforce releases his second full-length. Still riding high on the praise from his last EP, Dystopian Elements, Boris Bunnik has crafted another album of deep digital and authentic analog bliss. As well as on Delsin, it's appropriately classy labels like Clone and Rush Hour which have released Conforce's work in the past -- the results of which have helped mark out the man behind them as one of the day's most considered sonic craftsmen. All but one of the album tracks is new and exclusive, with "Lonely Run" the only one heard thus far, given its inclusion on the aforementioned EP. It was a track which perfectly surmised the man's musical mission -- to combine elements of futurism with real hardware, decent software and to simply go wherever it takes him, be that a landscape doused in dub, formed from a firmer techno template or built on a house groove. As such, the aptly-entitled album is a wholly immersive listen from start to finish. Operating in its own deep and subliminal world of rhythm, it goes from lateral and dubby to more upright and kicking, touching on ambient moments and the odd classist moment along the way. Rather than ten shades of the same color, Escapism investigates a number of different moods and tempos. Opener "Revolt DX," for example, suggests a lively pace, despite being drenched in echo and reverb. "Elude," meanwhile, is a more roughshod roller torn apart by blistering synths, crisp percussion and prying claps. "Shadows Of The Invisible" is a mysterious journey into the tense, unknown world of deep space, while "Aquinas Control" floats in a murky, churning and dark underwater abyss... like the album overall, it's hugely evocative stuff that bares little resemblance to the populist motifs of Chicago-this or Detroit-that. From start to finish, Escapism grabs your attention without being rushed, hurried or over-complicated. It's the sort of album which works on both headphones up-close, but also on a dancefloor at a distance, thanks to its devilish detail but palpable presence. Unsurprisingly, one of today's most reliable producers has turned in one of the year's finest albums.

OHNO, MATSUO: I Saw The Outer Limits LP (EM 1098LP)
"I am not interested in sounds that already exist." Thus spoke the esteemed "Onkyo designer" Matsuo Ohno, early in his expansive, influential career. This reissue of his stellar 1978 LP I Saw The Outer Limits presents him at the peak of his powers, combining his mastery of classic analog tape music techniques (honed to perfection while providing sound design for Astro Boy and numerous other films and TV programs) with then-state-of-the-art analog synthesizers. This is a true under-recognized classic, a masterfully recorded, massive-sounding poetic construction of unearthly sound -- an undulating, breathing behemoth, with Ohno's galaxy moving beyond "sounds that already exist" in search of new sonic spaces. Liner notes and biography in Japanese with an English translation. Original LP artwork with hologram-coated sleeve. Limited edition.

BUNWINKIES: Map Of Our New Constellations LP (FTR 062LP)
Beautiful first LP by these Western Massachusetts maestros of the mystery-volk gesture. Named after some well-bred rabbits of Martha Burr Banks' invention, related by birth to Jow Jow The Death Knell Rung, many of the questions here are posed by Beverly Ketch's plaintive vocals, all of them edged with a wide-eyed wonder one would suspect was a ruse if one didn't know her. There is a bit of the campfire to the material's construction, but there's none of the cutsey-pie crap that might seem to infer. Some of the bits ring like a full-fledged folk-rock oyster. Indeed, the vibe is not dissimilar to the work of Barbara & Teri Manning, and the organ backing that pops up here and there is very much in line with the SF sound developed by the Amarillo Records bands and their ilk. Very goddamn elegant, this.

MARS: Live At Artists Space LP (FTR 068LP)
In May of 1978, there was a five-night music festival at Artists Space on Hudson Street in Tribeca. Although almost no one cared at the time, the event has since entered the halls of legend, as one of the signal events in the history of the no wave era -- one that managed to include both the Lower East Side bands and those fronted by their Western contemporaries. On the final night of the festival, the two bands playing were Mars and Teenage Jesus And The Jerks. What we are presenting to you today are both sets by Mars -- the most mysterious, and bizarrely-styled NY band of their day. One set takes up each side, and while they are similar in song selection, it's wild to hear how different they are in terms of attack, sonics and approach. The quartet -- Nancy Arlen, China Burg, Sumner Crane, Mark Cuningham -- was never captured at its mutational best in the studio, but this live slab is revelatory. Tunings, structures and rhythms from a place Capt. Beefheart once called "the other side of the fence," this is Mars at their most glorious.

KANG, EYVIND: Visible Breath LP (SOMA 004LP)
"Eyvind Kang's tremendous efforts on Sunn O)))'s Monoliths & Dimensions album helped elevate the group's presence to a new level creatively and aesthetically. We were fortunate and perhaps even destined to have this crossing. During this period Kang also premiered the pair of pieces presented on side A of this album, 'Visible Breath' and 'Monodology.' I was fortunate to witness an ensemble concert of these compositions titled 'Grass' in Seattle which featured many of the same amazing musicians we'd been working with on the O))) record, notably the most respected elders Julien Priester and Stuart Dempster. Their presence was such an honor and also an unpredictable inspiration due to their incredibly rich lives producing new and experimental music. The 'Grass' recording done at the time lay dormant for many years. It's my pleasure to present these incredible compositions to the world through this humble effort. Side B is a new piece recorded in summer 2011 with pedal steel and cello, a beautiful excursion of harmonics, ghost tones, and integral interpretation titled 'Thick Tarragon.' Delicate, enjoyable and translucent as white fields of grass." --Stephen O'Malley, October 2011; Ideologic Organ curation and art direction by Stephen O'Malley. TRENTEMØLLER: Reworked/Remixed 2CD (IMR 007CD)
Anders Trentemøller has become one of the most respected names in cutting-edge electronic music. His rise to notoriety was sparked by his early, techy releases for Poker Flat and Audiomatique and has since gone on to stellar highs with his own personal take on the genre, spanning, pop, rock, indie and classical. Now, this special double CD and double vinyl release celebrates some of the producer's favorite remixes he completed for other artists, and also some of his personal picks where other musicians have reworked his music. With over 20 super-slick productions to choose from, this is a real treat for any Trentemøller fan, or indeed a great introduction into his sound -- from crisp electronic beats, to atmospheric and filmic moments, to heavy post-rock mutations and beyond. All the reworked tracks are taken from 2010's Into The Great Wide Yonder album (IMR 002CD-LTD/LP), which fused melancholic, emotional melodies with a more indie/electro-rock studio focus. This double CD packs so many quality songs and productions, it's hard to list them all, yet highlights on CD1 include the introductory swathes of Marie Fisker's wonderfully contemplative version of "Sycamore Feeling," taking us into lazy, hazy hypnotic waves of neo-folk. "Tide" flows in as three different versions: Efterklang's beautiful new remix, a Trentemøller version, and Modeselektor's dirty ride with plenty of lo-fi synths fusing with high-end production. There's also a remix by Andrew Weatherall, and the main man's remixes of artists like UNKLE, The Dø, Franz Ferdinand or Modeselektor featuring Thom Yorke -- all must-have modern works, also including Kasper Bjørke's tender "Does Not Matter" which is re-shaped by Trentemøller. On CD2 we find even more electronic versions, kicking off with Trentemøller's foreboding new mix of his own "Neverglade," before we hear his interpretations of Efterklang's "Raincoats" or the heroic version of Depeche Mode's "Wrong." I Blame Coco provide their brilliantly different interpretation of "...Even Though You're With Another Girl," featuring the new recorded vocals of Coco Sumner. "Even Though..." is also reworked by Kollektiv Turmstrasse providing a stylish mixture of pop-meets-deepest-electronica. Furthermore, we discover brilliant reworks of bands like Mew, Giana Factory and Chimes And Bells. UNKLE, maverick UK producer James Lavelle's ambitious ongoing project, reaches out into filmic, spacey zones with their remix of Trentemøller's classic "Neverglade." Among UNKLE's version and the bristling, tense electronic remix by Trentemøller himself, this track also appears as an instrumental version. Trentemøller Reworked/Remixed is a beautiful journey into the musical world of one of the best producers and musicians today, enriched with reinterpretations by some of the most interesting artists.

TJADER, CAL: Mamblues 7" (JM 086EP)
Vibes wizard belts out a fiery Latin jazz gem with a version on the flip that's pure fatback funk. Cal Tjader was a vibraphonist of Swedish-American heritage based in California, contracted to Fantasy Records. In 1958 he cut the frenzied "Mamblues," a truly amazing piece of bangin' Latin jazz. In 1972 the song was revisited on the soundtrack to the full-length adult-rated cartoon movie Fritz The Cat. Only this time lean, mean time-keepin' machine Bernard "Pretty" Purdie was in the traps.

GOLD: Gold CD (JMAN 044CD)
The label had intended simply to license the masters for the obscure '77 Cali funk-soul single "What About The Child," credited to otherwise unknown outfit Gold, for a direct 45 rpm reissue. And so began the search for the men behind this lavish, expansive soulful spin, the men who were Gold. Writer and producer Avelino Pitts was taken aback on first contact, but duly set about the not-so-simple task of locating and delivering these 35 year-old tapes. "I dug around, I started going all over and asking, and nobody knew where this was," Pitts remembers. "And, no one -- the studios, my brother -- nobody had a copy of a tape. But my father had a shed in the back. Now this is in Las Vegas -- not air conditioned -- and this is a shed. And [after] all of these years of 100+ degree weather, he said, 'why don't you take a look in the shed?' So I'm digging through boxes, covered in dust, spiders, and I come across this box of tapes!" And from those very tapes comes this long-awaited album. Unheard by human ears since 1974, this is the super sound of psychedelic soul, dancefloor funk and soulful ballads astonishing for their power and beauty. It's incredible to find out that for one reason or another, this album was never released at the time, and in Jazzman's interviews and liner notes (as well as never-before-seen pictures, photos and images), they reveal the fascinating story behind the band and why such good music has been kept in the dark for so long.

Following Biodub's debut album, a few of Ki Records' favorite artists remix some tracks of their choice. Second up is Glitterbug, who seems to create his very own genre with his interpretation of "Barracuda." Stundman goes straight to the dancefloor on "Reminder." Rune Riley Kölsch is a tall Danish guy and it's quite likely that you've already heard some of his tracks out in a club. VA: Tucson Songs: Exciting New Sounds From Southern Arizona CD (LPM 032CD)
Tucson Songs: Exciting New Sounds From Southern Arizona is a stunning portrait of a musically sizzling city. In between mambo, country & western and Americana, a new desert sound is blossoming in Arizona. Tucson Songs contains 18 songs, 90% are previously-unreleased. Including two exclusive tracks by Giant Sand and Calexico. Ask most music fans which cities come to mind and most will state the obvious -- Detroit, Nashville, Seattle, Austin, Philadelphia, Portland. But, tucked into the southwest desert is one that deserves a place on that list -- Tucson. This "smallest big city in the USA" has always been home to a steady music scene, but in recent years, has become a vibrant Mecca for musicians. With the ever-shining sun and cheap rent for generous spaces, Tucson is the perfect place for musicians to stretch their legs and delve into their craft. For the past decade or so, bands like Giant Sand and Calexico have been delivering up quintessential sounds of the desert. But any connoisseur of the late '80s will remember bands that paved the way for that sound, bands such as Green On Red, Chris Cacavas and Al Perry and The Cattle. However, a closely-guarded secret that is about to be cracked wide open is the latest generation of highly-talented musicians that are launching their own flagships of sounds from Arizona. A combination of Tucson's extremely relaxed atmosphere with the prickly landscape dominated by unforgiving cacti makes for new good sounds, rhythms and songs. Along the way, this new crop of bands has had a helping hand from their pioneering forefathers -- Calexico is to Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta as Giant Sand's Howe Gelb is to Brian Lopez. However, none of this hot-bed of talent would have come to our attention had it not been for Tucson's French-born chanteuse Marianne Dissard. She wisely plucked up many of these budding musicians to bring along with her on her European tours. And now, they appear on this compilation with their own offerings, including Andrew Collberg, Brian Lopez, Gabriel Sullivan and Sergio Mendoza. Her ex-husband, Naim Amor and fellow musicians like Amy Rude, Silver Thread Trio and Courtney Marie Andrews are also all at the core of a familiar scene that inspires the good kind of sounds. Researching the rich local music scene ended up in Le Pop putting together a sampler-concept compilation album entitled Tucson Songs... and on the treasure hunt, Le Pop got a lot of help navigating the scene from Joey Burns (Calexico) and über-knowledgeable local radio host Dr. Dan Twelker. Tucson Songs... is a portrait of a musical city like no other -- a melting pot and creative oasis in the desert. Other artists include: Taraf de Tucson, Françoiz Breut, Otherly Love, Boffomet, Golden Boots and Bread And Circus.

ELEKTRO GUZZI: Parquet CD (MACROM 027CD)
Elektro Guzzi deliver one of the most thrilling live performance models for techno and an innovative leap in the art of band performance at the very same time. It's almost the antithesis to what a band is supposed to be. While they use guitar, bass and drums only, they take the most unusual playing techniques and put them together into a rigid mechanical form where it all makes instant, evident sense. Yet, if they had not performed live extensively, becoming audience favorites from Mutek to Sónar or Berghain to Fabric, it would be hard to believe this is really how the music is created. Parquet, their second studio album, sees them in an unprecedented monomaniacal techno mode. Throughout the nine tracks, the distinctions between instruments and roles are totally vaporized. While their instrumental approach is at the core of their aesthetics, it really doesn't matter anymore if one sound comes from a guitar or bass or drum -- it has all been merged into one sonic unit and all there is, is the music as a unified entity. While all the qualities of live performance are at hand -- real-time interaction, visual plausibility, instant miniscule adaptations -- it is a radical break with what group performances have been about so far. Parquet is as much a straight-up club music record as it is rich with nuances and details. Astonishingly, while being their most rigid and dance-centered work to date, it also holds outbursts of beauty with tonal lines, ringing overtones and warm resonances. The rhythms are stripped down to the core and structured for affecting longer stretches of perception. Every track comes with a distinctive, almost "branding" feature -- like the hypnotic meter-shifting line of "Affumicato," the gated chords of "Pentagonia" or the abridged rhythm of "Absorber." Actually, it all was recorded directly to analog tape. No edits, no overdubs. It's the man-machine in real time and a hint at the love Elektro Guzzi put in the process.

ESKORBUTO: Ya No Quedan Mas Cojones, Eskorbuto A Las Elecciones 12" (MR 310EP)
Reissue of this 1986 cassette by Eskorbuto, one of the most influential punk bands in the Spanish and Latin American scenes. Its original release was part of their campaign to enter the Spanish general elections as a political party. They didn't achieve it, but the songs here told more truths that any political speech. CRAMPS, THE: File Under Sacred Music: Early Singles 1978-1981 CD (MR 315CD)
Munster Records presents a compilation of the The Cramps' early singles plus some tracks from the same period, 1978-1981, that were never issued in that format. Six replica sleeves and four new sleeves were especially designed for this edition, and are also reproduced in the CD booklet, which includes photos and memorabilia.

"I've no idea why The Cramps don't seem to figure in a lot of alleged histories of punk or just plain music in general. This could be down to them being utterly or unpigeonhole-able (is that even a word?) or just outright ignorance. Perhaps a bit of both, but hey, let's not concern ourselves with that. The band changed the face of culture. Period. Without bothering 'the charts' or playing too many stadiums, their seismic effect on everything you hold dear will be felt for all time. This ancient knowledge -- some of their grooviest gravy -- is presented here for your delectation and delight. So get a crack-a-lackin' with blasting these twisted hymns morning, noon and night. And while the ruckus is in full swing, pray to whoever might listen that Ivy will get around to compile the ultimate document of her undulating combo in commemoration of their services to entertainment. The bloody gears of this here rockin' machine will be rolling way beyond the foreseeable future. Reasons outwith anyone's control might mean that you can't see the band anymore but no one -- no how -- will be able to make this thing stop. Meanwhile, dig into this feast for the little ghouls that understood all along or indeed anyone with a decent set of ears." --Lindsay Hutton

LA BARRA DE CHOCOLATE: La Barra De Chocolate CD (MR 316CD)
La Barra De Chocolate was a short-lived project led by Pajarito Zaguri, a former member of Los Beatniks, Los Náufragos, and a key figure in the birth and development of Argentine rock. In 1968, he gathered some musician friends that used to visit the legendary Buenos Aires venue La Cueva. They soon caught the attention of the Music Hall record label and in 1969 released their first single, Hippies Y Todo El Circo/¿Cuál Es La Forma?. They also won the Festival Beat talent contest and their second single, Alza La Voz, sold over 40,000 copies. However, after the recording of their first album and the release of a few more singles, the band split the following year, unable to cope with their newfound success and perhaps due to the other music projects all the members had. This brief period was enough to produce a fantastic LP containing garage, beat, psychedelia and the influence of Bob Dylan which represents a brilliant portrait of late 1960s Buenos Aires. Includes 8 bonus tracks not included on the vinyl version.

TRAFFIC SOUND: Virgin CD (MR 317CD)
Formed in 1968 by members of bands from Lima, Peru, such as Los Hang Tens and Los Mads and other musicians, Traffic Sound started as a covers band playing songs by The Doors, Cream and Jimi Hendrix. Their influences came from England and the U.S., and apart from some bossa nova played at rehearsals, Latin music didn't feature in their repertoire. However, their origin and background could still be heard in their sound, something which they embraced even more after Santana's success. Their first LP with self-written songs, Virgin (1969), is a masterpiece of Latin rock. In it, the band from Lima combined psychedelia, hard rock, a hint of progressive rock and a Latin tinge to create a personal, mighty sound full of details. The best example is "Meshkalina," a track with references to Incan culture which became an anthem of the period and was heard all over Peru. The LP was a great success and even saw a U.S. release. Traffic Sound would record another two albums (Traffic Sound and Lux) which took them to greater success and tours in Brazil and Argentina, before finally disbanding in 1972.

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN: Silence Is Sexy 2LP (POTOMAK 957051)
Vinyl re-issue of Einstürzende Neubauten's Silence Is Sexy, originally released in 2000 from singer Blixa Bargeld and his band partners (N.U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit and Rudolf Moser). This vinyl double album contains the track "Pelikanol," first available as a bonus track with the 2000 release of the album and now for the first time available on vinyl. A concept of "conceptlessness" was created at that time from a spontaneous idea (many thought it was an April Fool's joke when Einstürzende Neubauten first stood on the stage at Berlin's "Moon" on April 1, 1980; now over 30 years ago), from which the "brilliant dilettantes" developed their own strategy against social and musical architecture using metal pipes, feathers and machines. Blixa Bargeld constructed metaphor-laden poetry around which unique worlds of sound were built up from objects of the most varied origins. The band discovered sounds beyond the pain barrier, the beauty of dissonance and the aesthetics of the scrapyard. They are regarded as the most important engines in the development of new musical strategies. Hardly another German band has characterized the musical landscape as lastingly as Einstürzende Neubauten. Their influence on the music world was and is as great as their timeless character. Silence Is Sexy finally receives a long-awaited reissue on the band's own label Potomak. The element of surprise was and continues to be routine for Einstürzende Neubauten. On Silence Is Sexy they masterfully celebrate the unexpected in the exploration of silence. It is a wonderful album in the classical Neubauten sense; lyrical and melancholy. It's a musical coming-of-age from metal-defying scrap iron sound to constructed melodiousness, with a familiar rhythmic undertow -- playful, arrogant, poetic, subversive, dandified and mature. From its first release in 2000 (marking the 20-year existence of the band) to date, it has doubtlessly remained the group's most complex work and the most fascinating in its evolution. It shows the Neubauten universe from both a known, emotionally moving side, as well as one that is deliberately constructive. It clearly breathes the inimitably rough Neubauten handwriting, while Blixa's voice cuts through intellectual and cryptic texts. It is carried by metal sounds, from which individual instruments can almost no longer be extracted -- and by silence. Ultimately, nearly inaudible tones or laughter in the right place can seem more destructive than the most enduring rage. This is an album that won't be ignored; a unique appearance in the history of German rock music.

Fifty-five tracks spread over two CDs, The Original Sound Of Cumbia is Soundway's definitive guide to the origins of Colombian cumbia and porro and the result of five years' painstaking research by Will "Quantic" Holland. Disc 1 tells the story of some of the earliest Colombian cumbia recorded, a genre that captured a nation, spreading from its birthplace on the Caribbean coast inland to central Colombia and the capital Bogata. Disc 2 sees the evolution of cumbia. Greats of Colombian music like Alberto Pacheco, Toño Fernandez and Anibal Velasquez brought the genre forward, bringing new influences and instruments to the genre. What had once been considered the music of the underclasses had risen up as the new sound of a nation. After five years of becoming slowly submerged in Colombian musical culture, learning the accordion, setting up a band and a studio, and scouring the country in search of its recorded legacy, Will "Quantic" Holland (Quantic Soul Orchestra & Quantic Y Su Combo Barbaro) has compiled the fruits of his labor into this unique compilation that tells the story of cumbia in the years of the phonograph record's supremacy. Along with good friend and head of Soundway Records, Miles Cleret, Will Holland has condensed hundreds of 78s, 45s and LPs into just over two and a half hours of the finest Colombian cumbia. Includes detailed liner notes and original artist pictures and sleeves.

FULL BLAST & FRIENDS: Sketches And Ballads CD (TROST 107CD)
If you know the score, you might actually think of the piece's title as a bit of an understatement. After all, it is made of 50 densely-written pages, which might cause some interpreters to lose track of sight. For Michael Wertmüller's composition Sketches And Ballads is full of seemingly unplayable rhythms, which hail from his extensive experience as a percussionist: complex 256th parts and 512th parts are no exception in Wertmüller's work. Even the visual appearance of it shows much of the dynamic and ferocity of his music. And these notations are really just "sketches." The piece was originally composed for the SWR to be played at the NOWJazz sessions of the Donaueschinger music days in 2010. The title's true meaning becomes apparent when Michael Wertmüller himself talks about his work. As it turns out, the term "sketch" is actually a reference to Miles Davis' Sketches Of Spain, especially because Wertmüller is very impressed by the density of Gil Evans' composition for Davis. Still, there is a deeper level as well. Although the score of Sketches And Ballads is written out in detail, it only fully unfolds its beauty and real meaning when the single particles are connected by free improvisation. This is one of the reasons why Sketches And Ballads clearly is a jazz piece -- the other reason being that the composed parts are really vibrating with a jazzy groove due to the free work of the musicians with the material and their jazz-like phrasing. The piece was performed by a sextet in October 2010 in Donaueschingen for the first time. The musicians were fronted by the trio Full Blast -- a critically-acclaimed group consisting of Peter Brötzmann (saxophone), Marino Pliakas (e-bass) and Michael Wertmüller himself on drums. For the realization of Sketches And Ballads, some friends joined the threesome for the performance. American saxophonist Ken Vandermark has often been linked to Full Blast and adds some special timbre to the baritone saxophone and the clarinet. German trumpeter Thomas Heberer is one of the most creative and versatile musicians in New York's Downtown scene; percussionist Dirk Rothbrust plays a wonderfully headstrong timbal. Although there are two percussionists involved, Sketches And Ballads only works with a few, very well-placed passages in fortissimo. The composed parts are strongly influenced by Wertmüller's highly sophisticated understanding of time. At the same time, there are also temptingly tender parts: the ballads which are almost tailor-made for Peter Brötzmann. The German saxophonist, internationally well-known for his distinctively raw sound on saxophone, clarinet and tárogató (a Hungarian woodwind), developed a seemingly more melancholic side. Brötzmann's touching sound acts as a counterpart to Wertmüller's fast-paced compostion. Michael Wertmüller accomplishes a lot with his piece: he provides the proliferating free jazz with certain compositional structures without holding back. Eventually the formally structured "neo free jazz" -- also incorporating intense rock elements -- still has the same core theme it used to have in the 1960s: criticizing the political state of affairs and social injustice that leave the masses paralyzed. Peter Brötzmann (tenor sax + tárogató), Ken Vandermark (baritone sax + clarinet), Thomas Heberer (trumpet), Marino Pliakas (e-bass), Dirk Rothbrust (percussion + timpani), Michael Wertmüller (drums + composition). Recorded live at the Donaueschinger Musiktage, 10/16/2010, recorded by SWR.

ZZT (ZOMBIE NATION & TIGA): Partys Over Earth CD (TURBO 033CD)
Tiga and Zombie Nation have joined forces to create the most potent dance record of the year. Apocalyptic tension. Panic-fueled fundowns. 2012 is approaching. Having both rocked remarkably long and prolific careers, the members of ZZT possess uncanny staying power in an industry where hype ends faster than it begins. Zombie Nation's production credentials are impeccable, and his reputation as a live performer has made him a permanent fixture on Europe's main stages. Meanwhile, Tiga's vocal hooks, sampling know-how, DJ sets and impressive work as a label boss have all kept him perched atop the electro-pyramid. These are two major players in the indie-dance world, but together, they are something else entirely. ZZT first established themselves as paradigm wreckas back in 2007 with Lower State Of Consciousness, upping the ante on how "crazy" a crazy club record needs to be. Dazed & Confused named it their "Electronica Single of the Year," while Rough Trade likened it to "hearing Da Funk for the first time... getting Justice to turn it inside out is a master stroke. Tune of the Year." Partys Over Earth is relentless, uncompromising combat funk. If the new ZZT were a drug, it would be DZZMT. Not the stuff some loser shaman huffs behind the village gas station, but a new-school cut of freebase free-bass that tears out your central nervous system and forces it to dance with the hottest elf you've ever seen.

COLLINS, WILLIAM FOWLER: The Resurrections Unseen LP (TYPE 103LP)
There are dark forces at work deep in the deserts of New Mexico. William Fowler Collins has been hard at work since his last full-length effort, but collaborations with Gog and Aaron Turner (of Isis) haven't deterred him from crafting this pitch-black follow-up. The ingredients won't surprise fans of Perdition Hill Radio (TYPE 046CD/LP), but on The Resurrections Unseen, Collins further damages and buries his palette of sounds beyond all recognition. Howling field recordings are trapped between walls of tape hiss while white noise and twisted guitar suffers through overdub after overdub, leaving only the picked carcass of what was once a discernable sound. Much was made of its predecessor's deconstruction of black metal, but The Resurrections Unseen takes this to another level entirely. The album is, for all intents and purposes, a black metal record -- but any traces of blast beats, hoarse, blood-curdling vocals or shrill distorted guitar have been totally obliterated. What remains are bleak, windswept textures, spine-chilling rituals and the kind of doom-laden ambience that'll have you double-bolting your doors and checking your phone lines. This is not theater though; Collins never resorts to the typical horror tropes, instead opting to suggest fear with the most restrained hand. As rolling hiss emerges from a muddy puddle of dank sub bass, it might take a few listens to pick out exactly what you're hearing at all, but the terror is there from the very beginning. Many artists attempt dark music, but few really succeed -- Collins has managed it by merely suggesting what our brains already know. A frightening thought, indeed. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, limited to 500 copies only.

VA: Rangarang: Pre-Revolutionary Iranian Pop 2CD (VAMPI 138CD)
It may seem hard to believe now, with the Islamic Republic of Iran swathed in controversial breaches of human rights and nonsensical nuclear issues, but a little over 30 years ago it was all glitz and glamour, rock and roll. The shah of Iran promoted modernization to the detriment of Persian culture and most Iranians loathed the stoic king by the end of his reign. Centuries of monarchist rule gave way to a staunch Islamist regime during the populist Iranian Revolution of 1979. The new Iranian government sought to eradicate any remnants of the imperialist monarchy and "having fun" was banned entirely. Music's controversial status within Islam meant that the Persian pop industry was incongruous with Iran's new and heavy-handed rulers. All of Iran's record labels were forcibly shut down, the entire broadcasting industry was Islamicized, and a fearful population burned their records, buried their books and complied, at least on the surface, with the Islamic regime's new (and very boring) rules and regulations. Rangarang is a compilation of forgotten jewels from pre-revolutionary Iran. These songs tell the stories of an artisan community that flourished during the 1960s and 1970s before vanishing into oblivion. The pop stars who stayed in Iran were summonsed to the revolutionary court and forced to sign a declaration promising to abandon their careers and never perform again. By the time an exilic music industry had been established in Los Angeles, where many musicians settled after fleeing the chaotic disarray of post-revolutionary war-torn Iran, the beats and melodies of the monarchist era had given way to the synthesizers of the 1980s and Iranian pop music would never be the same again. The range of the tracks included on Rangarang is astonishing, from funky workouts and soulful pop to jazzy grooves and yearning ballads, all wonderfully and imaginatively produced and arranged, giving shape to truly popular music.

His mutant synth pop is a typical combination of vintage analog sounds, drums machine, floating interludes and texturized guitar waves. Previous Franklin album Every Now And Then (WR 008CD) took you on a cinematic road-movie trip; Artificial Light invites you to a pictural game of reflecting lights for a unique rhythmical experience. Call it dream-pop, lo-fi, experimental, bedroom production, whatever -- Franklin has followed his sonic explorations and developed his own individual voice.

LUSTMORD: Zoetrope 2LP (BWR 015LP)
"Zoetrope (1999) is an experimental avant-garde short film by music-video director Charlie Deaux. It presents a haunting, apocalyptic story of man's metaphysical existence. Inspired by Franz Kafka's story In the Penal Colony, the film is an attempt to transfer Kafka's dark, nightmarish vision and gloomy atmosphere to celluloid. The film was shot by music-video cinematographer James Hawkinson. The 3D animation for the film was created by Robert Beebe. Shot on 35mm film on extremely smooth black-and-white stock, the film features dark and surreal visuals. This 18-minute work features a dark ambient soundscape by musician and sound designer Lustmord (also known as Brian Williams) and was released on DVD in 2005 by Soleilmoon Recordings."

LUSTMORD: Monsterous Soul 2LP (BWR 021LP)
"Burning World Records is proud to present the second installment in the Lustmord vinyl re-issue series. After the release of Zoetrope double album last year, this fall we will bring you The Monstrous Soul, originally recorded and released in 1990. The Monstrous Soul was conceived in Sheffield in 1990 by B. Lustmord and Clock DVA founder Adi Newton. First released by London label World Serpent, it followed the seminal and highly influential dark ambient album Heresy (SOL 009CD). Although the release dates were barely a year apart, The Monstrous Soul marked a turning point for Lustmord, one that mapped the future more than it mirrored the past. Much more digital magic and electronic processing was employed this time, where much of the material on Heresy utilized acoustic sound sources and traditional analog recording technologies. The Monstrous Soul dedicated itself to creating a environment of gloom in which the listener was totally enveloped by an hour long soundscape best described as a journey through a frozen hell. At the time The Monstrous Soul was recorded, the legendary B. Lustmord resided in a squat in London, near the Oval cricket ground, just around the corner from David Tibet, founder of Current 93. It takes little imagination to connect the bleak visual landscape of south London's worst slum to Lustmord's grim electronics. This wasn't simply a fantasy video game soundtrack, it truly reflected the environment from which is came."

OLAUSSON, JAKOB: Morning and Sunrise CD (DESTIJL 097CD)
"At some point all great explorers, from Amundsen to Kishan Singh Rawat, come to an opening up and cast their minds across a big space. A clearing, a promontory, a look out from a place no one's been before. Jakob Olausson ventured deep on Moonlight Farm, his debut for De Stijl in the winter of 2005. His singular expression returns on Morning and Sunrise, an explorer's codex, a gaze through to what's more important and less seen. The path yet traveled and the sun arcing over it. Morning and Sunrise is a different record from Moonlight Farm. Neither 'progression' nor the preferred 'natural progression' describe how. There is more electric guitar and it really whisks at your earbones, the playing is beautiful. Jakob's singing glows more. It gives light and shows love as it reassures, makes no false promises, says: You can be understood. Honest as the elements, whether you count four or 118. Words like 'loner' will be hung on Morning and Sunrise, and that's okay, we associate clarity this potent with solitude. And this could be the most lucid psychedelic record ever, morning is just so clear, and anyway, it's not really loner, because you are there all along. Don't we all just want to know how the next person gets along? Come out into the morning and see."

"It ain't always clean. Not every time, man. Sometimes, hardly ever. Goodbye Bread is on its own level, but Ty Segall is an if-it-shines-it-shines kinda guy. And Spiders is more like downtown without the lights. The a-side creeps heavy and sounds like some Finnish funeral if it were a slow-jam on a dance floor littered with off-handed mutterings of the word 'gnarly' and everyone just a tad high but no one copping to it. Of course, that only adequately describes one of the A-side jams. Like a good friend, Spiders totally smacks both cheeks, what with being a double A-sided single and all. Per usual, the B-side -- or third spankmaster, as we're apt to call it -- is a through-the-ringer-cover (this time it's the Groundhogs) brought to new life through Ty-Fi Recording. MCLUHAN, MARSHALL: The Medium is the Massage CD (FDW 7711CD)
"When Marshall McLuhan proposed his idea to create an audio companion piece to his landmark 1967 book The Medium is the Massage, no one quite knew what to expect. The book itself brilliantly captured McLuhan's theories on media and technology, arguing that the medium by which information is transferred to people was more important than the actual content being relayed. McLuhan hoped that an audio recording would help give greater depth to his theories, and in the late 1960s, he and producer John Simon went to work on a record of the same name. Using audio clips of McLuhan speaking, often interrupted by discordant sounds and other voices interjecting, they created a thought-provoking, sometimes whimsical patchwork of sounds and ideas that illustrated the complex relationship between people, media and technology. Over 40 years since its release, The Medium is the Massage continues to challenge listeners to think about media and communications in new ways. Five Day Weekend is proud to present the definitive compact disc edition of this rare and important album. Included in the gatefold paste-on package is a 40 page book featuring original essays by DJ Spooky and Michael Vasquez, a reproduction of a print by Winston Smith and a collection of previously unpublished photos from the original records sessions."

VA: Thai Funk: ZudRangMa Vol. 1 2LP (LITA 076LP)
"Over two years ago, Bangkok crate digger Maft Sai from ZudRangMa Records Thailand compiled the now legendary Thai Funk: ZudRangMa Vol. 1 CD, showcasing eighteen forgotten Thai pop, garage rock, funk, and disco tracks by a cross-section of local 1960s-70s artists unknown outside of Southeast Asia. For those who missed the first edition or prefer their music (as we do) on black wax, Thai Funk: ZudRangMa Vol. 1 is now available as a stunning double LP package. Housed in a deluxe gatefold 'tip-on' old-school jacket with a plethora of vintage album art, lovingly remastered audio, and to top it off, the beautiful Thai print hand-stitched cloth outer sleeve (w/ 10+ color/pattern variations) that the original CD was famous for, we are honored to help spread this important cultural message. Easily our most ornate and eloquent packaging yet, it's the eclectic and always captivating music that really shines. Despite the foreign track names and indigenous delivery, Thai Funk: ZudRangMa Vol. 1 occasionally echoes the familiar motifs of Western pop, rock, and soul acts like Pink Floyd on Kana TNT's 'Kod Hang Kam,' B.T. Express on the Impossible's take of 'Do It (Till You're Satisfied') and James Brown on Meesak Nakaratch's 'Luk Ron.' Combined with original material filled with ample fuzz guitar, burning organ, funky drumming, and passionate vocals, dropping the needle on Thai Funk: ZudRangMa Vol. 1 opens a musical door that very few in the western world have dared explore. Picture yourself at a seedy Bangkok discotheque in 1979 with your pals and prepare to party the night away."

SANDSTONE: Can You Mend A Silver Thread? CD (LION 648CD)
"There is nothing ordinary about Sandstone. This private press folk/psych album (1971) is so head and shoulders above almost every other album in the genre, it's hard to believe it's not better known. The instrumentation and compositional style are reminiscent of heavy English folk hitters like Mellow Candle, Pentangle, and Heron. The Sandstone album was not a major label production like those records. But the local studio at which it was recorded must have been quite high end, because the production quality is astounding. Nearly everyone involved in these recordings was younger than eighteen, but there's very little evidence of that: the music is well constructed, and no aspect of it is without sophistication well beyond the years of its creators. The three teens behind this music (David Sheirer, Laurie Braunstein, and Mario Grella) molded a seamless compound of British trad-folk with themes of American antiquity, from pilgrims' progress to Civil War tragedies to the tainting of their unspoiled valley. Poetic lyrics, haunting female vocals, and judicious use of string sections, all serve Sandstone's entirely original compositions: the result is a dreamy, wistful mood that calls to you across the decades. After weeks of recording, overdubs, and mixing, the album was sent off to be manufactured. Sadly, the band only had cash enough for around 300 copies. Other than a few college radio spins for 'Flute Player' barely anyone heard Can You Mend A Silver Thread? outside of their inner circle. A monumental accomplishment nonetheless! From the cover to the instrumentation to the deeply strange and lovely lyrics, maybe the truest folk/psych music that these shores ever produced. Our Lion Productions edition (courtesy of Numero Group) includes two bonus tracks, out-takes from the album sessions."

MEDICAL RECORDS (UNITED STATES):
DALEK I LOVE YOU: Compass Kum'pas LP (MEDICAL 010LP)
"Originally released in 1980, Compass Kum'pas was the debut album by the Liverpool duo consisting of Alan Gill and Dave Hughes. Also known as Dalek I Love You, their name was a fusion of the Daleks (famous Doctor Who villains) and the name Darling, I Love You which was an early idea for the band's name by Alan Gill. The early incarnations of the band featured David Balfe (later in the Teardrop Explodes) and Andy McCluskey (later to form Ochestral Manoeuvres in the Dark). Alan Gill also was a member of the Teardrop Explodes at one point down the line. The LP was critically acclaimed but unfortunately flew under the radar in terms of revenue generation. Medical Records in collaboration with Dave and Alan are proud to present this seminal work on vinyl for the first time in over thirty years. The album can best be described as a pastiche of passionate synth-pop and highly restrained post-punk. At times very danceable pop is sharply contrasted with moody synth and vocal passages shrouded in a thick cloud of melancholy. The track 'Destiny (Dalek I Love You)' is a highly catchy synth hit and was a 7" single at the time. '8 Track' tells the peculiar tale of the love affair with a piece of recording equipment. 'Freedom Fighters' grabs you with sharp synth hooks and drags you to the dance floor. The cover version of 'You Really Got Me' is a very stripped down and restrained interpretation with angular chopped guitar. The LP is a synergistic cross between the stylings of early OMD synthpop, minimalist post-punk guitar, and a likeness to the piecemeal song structure of Van Dyke Parks. LP includes a bonus insert with early photos and a special written piece on the band by Kurt B. Reighley. As an extra to the LP, a bonus flexi-disc is included that includes the B-sides 'Happy' and 'This Is My Uniform.' Presented with much love on high-quality 180gram hot pink vinyl in a limited edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies. For fans of early OMD and analog synthpop."

MF DOOM: Operation Doomsday 2CD (MF 1107CD)
"Ask any true hip-hop fan and he can tell you exactly where and when he first heard MF Doom's Operation Doomsday. Against seeming insurmountable odds, the album - bootlegged mercilessly, floating in and out of print on various labels since its release in 1999 gained mythical status amongst music aficionados of all backgrounds as one of the landmark releases of the past decade. At its core, one man, a microphone, an MPC 2000 and a Roland VS 1680. By the time of Operation Doomsday's recording, DOOM was a transformed man: a veteran of hip hop's aging 'new school' reinvented as the masked, abstract wordsmith of the now. His pointed wit, subtly subversive lyrics and stream-of-conscious flow over adventurous sample-based production created the yard stick by which rappers in the coming decade would measure themselves. Now Doom's own Metal Face Records will release Operation Doomsday as a special remastered and expanded two-disc set, featuring a 32-page lyric book and a complete collection of alternate versions, B-sides and instrumental. San Francisco-based artist Jason Jagel, who provided the painting for DOOM's MM...Food, was enlisted to create both an updated version of the album's iconic comic-book style cover art especially for this release. The entire set was produced under the watchful eyes of Doom himself. Expanded and deluxe, this is the complete Operation Doomsday experience."

The kind of transcendental, melodic and immaculately produced music that will see Starkey fit in nicely within the labels roster. The EP is a good example of Starkey's (aka PJ Geissinger from Philadelphia) multifaceted and genre-crossing talents as a producer that have been gaining much acclaim ever since his 2005 debut. Starkey's original grime and bass leaning productions can be heard throughout (his own Seclusiasis label is at forefront of Street Bass in the USA), especially on 'Rayguns' and 'Blood Roses' but it's his compositional talents and more delicate blemishes seaping into his beats which are really starting to make Starkey stand out. Lead track 'Open The Pod Bay Doors' is an epic statement of intent that builds in the most beguiling of ways, at once melodic, futuristic and tough."

DRAKE, BOB: Bob's Drive-In LP (RER CTA17)
"A set of twisty, forty-ideas-a-minute, niftily arranged, irredeemably eccentric, but strangely brilliant songs that skip blithely across genre borders - from Nashville through the Miskatonic by way of the Beach Boys, even the production values range across the history of recording, sometimes switching inside a single song; a high information ride, but still engagingly listenable. Finished with his new CD, Bob sends the raw songs -- just chords and melody -- to Dave Kerman (ds), David Campbell (bs, vc) and Kavus Torabi (guit, vc) and, a few months later, they assemble at the Crumbling Tomes studio to work up the songs for a performance. Bob is in the band but the band is not being taught his interpretations and arrangements. It finds its own. After a week of rehearsals, there is a show for an invited audience, recorded live. So now we have a second great album - quite different from Bob's own. On the CD, both versions sit side-by-side, each very different, but still intimately linked to one another. A study, if you are so inclined; fun if you isn't. That's the sort of thing I call experimental." -- Chris Cutler.

NECKS, THE: Mindset LP (RER NECKS10LP)
"Now in their twenty-fourth year, the Necks' new release, Mindset, their sixteenth album, and first LP - features two starkly contrasting tracks: the pulsating, raw, 'Rum Jungle' and the slower building, rather hypnotic 'Daylights.' Polyrhythms imbue both pieces with powerful forward motion, embroiled with which ethereal piano patterns interweave with bass, drums, electronics, churning Hammonds and noise-guitars. Drummer and percussionist Tony Buck writes: Mindset shares some elements in common with our previous album Silverwater (RER NECKS9), mostly in some mixing approaches and rhythmic devices - a reflection of our ongoing fascination with polymetric material and varying simultaneous pulses, but it's a whole other thing again, and the two tracks are very different from one another --'Rum Jungle' captures the live approach of the piano, bass, and drum trio a lot more, while 'Daylights' features a bed of electronics and little sounds that slowly converge, coalescing into a multi-layered, multi-tempo, swirling soundscape."

LOS LLAMARADA: Gone Gone Cold LP (SS 055LP)
"Gone Gone Cold marks Los Llamarada's third and final album. Since their first album on S.S., The Exploding Now!, Llamarada has made some of the most striking psychedelic punk of the last decade. In the spirit of Red Crayola and 13th Floor Elevators, Llamarada approach to psych is devoid of rules, trends, or convention. Like Mars, they feel their way through sound, finding songs in the playing. However, while The Exploding Now! and their second album, Take the Sky, reflect the band's (then) excitement with their future and possibility, Gone Gone Cold looks at present day Mexico and it's never-ending drug war. On Gone Gone Cold, fans of Los Llamarada will hear their oft-noted claustrophobic sound, but the songs a less settled than before. Confusion trumps structure, until a riff or pulse builds in intensity and the song enters into panic. Or a song starts at a panicked pace and unravels into a single phrase. There still is the subverted surf-guitar and male/female chant/vocals, but the drums are stronger and keyboards more insistent -- sounds desperate for a way out."

YONKERS WITH THE BLIND SHAKE, MICHAEL: Period CD (SS 063CD)
"Carbohydrates Hydrocarbons is not only a great collection of punk-induced psychedelia, as heavy as anything can be without sludging to death; it was also the best thing Yonkers had done since Microminiature Love, and a high point of the Blind Shake. A few years later Yonkers and the Shake got together for a brief split/collaborative album on Learning Curve Records. Good stuff but not quite as powerful as the two aforementioned monsters. Now comes Period, Michael Yonkers and the Blind Shake's first full album together since Carbohydrates Hydrocarbons and their best yet. Like Yonkers and the Shake's previous work, Period is tuneful and heavy and punk and psychedelic, but there is also something more. The album has an energy which is dark but not sinister. Yonkers' lyrics are intense, even painful, but his voice is strong. The swirl of sound created by his homemade guitar is other worldly, and when woven into the guitar/baritone guitar/drum throb and punch created by the Blind Shake, Period is nothing less than great. Seriously, after six straight months of listening to Period, I rank it up there with such classics of heavy weirdness as Von Lmo's Future Language, High Rise II, and Monoshock's Walk to the Fire. Period is even worthy of a listen next to Blue Cheer's Vincebus Eruptum. Period by Michael Yonkers with the Blind Shake will stand as a classic. I am sure of that. Vinyl copies of Period are housed in a Stoughton 'old style' tip-on sleeve. The CD version is in a digipak."

BLAZE: Moonwalk 12" (CORE 095D-EP)
"When 'Moonwalk' was released in 1995, it was immediately recognized as a new high for the already well-accomplished Newark, NJ outfit Blaze. Previously, Josh Milan and Kevin Hedge had laid to waste virtually all competition with a slew of dope releases under their various guises in a little over 2 years --this after they had been dropped from Motown and left to fend for themselves in the highly inspired NY/NJ underground club scene. Burrowing further, the duo kept a low-profile throughout 1994, returning the following year to grace the world with their Funky People incarnation on the seminal Blaze Tracks EP, hailed for 'Moonwalk''s relentless, soaring beauty. Borrowing from the most psych-inclined soul-jazz pioneers of Blaze's confessed elementary foundation, the instrumental is one of the groups unquestionable demonstrations of genius and a bellowing affirmation of Josh Milan's otherworldly synth-work, which slithers and slopes its way through the tough, on-point, moody-keyed production typical of their mid-90's sound. The track is so cocky it abruptly ends with virtually no notice following 7 minutes of continuous ascension and accumulated tension, all left to dissipate instantly in a haze of astonishment and amazement. A classic club landmark, 'Moonwalk' is reissued here as the latest installment of slow to speak's CORE series, a fine testament to the expansive, totally-mesmerizing sound of authentic deep house music at its point of inception in the sweaty, blacked-out club-spaces of the NY metro-area and beyond."
