SIGURDSSON, VALGEIR: Draumalandið CD (HVALUR 008CD)

Iceland's Valgeir Sigurðsson has made his name as an exponent of musical subtlety. As an engineer and producer, he's often focused on the intimate, the miniature. But this is only one side of his musical capabilities. Draumalandið (trans. "Dreamland"), a documentary about the exploitation of Iceland's natural resources, tells a story about huge things -- the fortunes of a whole nation; the destruction of vast landscapes; and the global economic forces, greater still than any nation, that fuel it all -- and for his soundtrack to the film, Valgeir has brought out a heavier set of tools. His entire roster of Bedroom Community label-mates contributes in some way to the creation of the score: classical composers Nico Muhly and Daníel Bjarnason, industrial wizard Ben Frost, and American folksinger Sam Amidon, along with a host of others, and the small orchestra assembled for the record swells from moments of expansive beauty into massive, surging symphonic force. Its harmonies are anxious, pulsing, driven. Not that this is an album lacking in subtlety. Draumalandið the film takes on the delicate task of unmasking the apparent win/win proposition of Iceland's aluminum smelting boom -- clean energy! New jobs! Economic growth! -- as a false blessing with very real consequences. Likewise, Draumalandið the soundtrack takes global, at times seemingly abstract questions, and offers deeply personal responses. Valgeir's score makes fierce and direct statements of sorrow and indignation, but it also expresses, with a kind of hushed awe, the beauty of landscapes on the brink of devastation, and the seductive shimmer of the illusions that imperil them. Tender, fragmented melodies rise out of uncanny musical textures; in the album's opening track, Sam sings "Grýlukvæði," an Icelandic folktune about a greedy hag come to devour naughty children, just as he would an Appalachian ballad, and in turn, Valgeir reframes it as a sad, sympathetic reprimand to a people (Icelanders, yes, but by extension all of humanity) who would sell their birthright to a rapacious multinational. This is all painted in brushstrokes broad and minute, from a palette of hugely varied shades -- Sam's banjo-playing, Daníel's John Cage-style piano treatments, Ben's halos of distortion -- but somehow, it all fits together as a coherent musical argument. Heard as an accompaniment to the film, the Draumalandið score can disappear into the images and the narrative. Listened to on its own, it rewards close attention: for the subtle interconnections between the movements, for their cumulative emotional force, and simply as a series of meticulously-scored and recorded musical moments, urgent meditations on the natural sublime.

Ellen Allien, the queen of Berlin indie-techno, paves the way for an upcoming full-length with Pump. "Pump" takes a deep drag from the smoke machine and dives into the peak-time. The dirty funk is so dense, her vocals so pitched-down, that the strobe actually feels far too slow. Somehow Detroit, somehow Berlin. With its jazzy bass line, "Feel Like" pushes forward with synths, claps and a touch of rave and Chicago. The twisted sounds reveal complex arrangements that remain playful.

TROXLER, SETH: Boogy Bytes Vol. 05 CD (BPC 210CD)

This is the fifth installment in BPitch Control's Boogy Bytes series and it's the first CD not to feature a star from the label. Seth Troxler's top-drawer DJ, remixing and production skills, as well as his highly-praised releases on labels including the Ghostly International sub-label Spectral Sound, have helped him attract considerable interest and great bookings in his home city of Detroit and his current surroundings in Berlin. After the success of their night at the Berlin club Watergate, the paths of Ellen Allien and Seth Troxler crossed once again, and Seth was given the honor of making a Boogy Bytes CD. The track selection conveys a palpable deepness, occasionally harboring a touch of melancholy, yet never becoming overwhelming, for at its peaks -- which certainly include Seth's Fever Ray mix -- the tension is released in the most explosive and unbridled manner. Seth already considers certain tracks as classics. For him, Nicolas Jaar's "Time For Us" and the epic "Birds And Souls" are works with a great future. Not only are the individual remixes artfully arranged and intertwined, but single elements are also occasionally re-employed as material in a sound montage. Seth merges tracks into one another almost imperceptibly while constantly creating new angles in the way they overlap and retreat from one another. Other songs, on the other hand, follow one another abruptly and yet completely seamlessly. In the case of the dancefloor stormer "Stricher" by Roman Flügel, a complete section of the song is remolded as a transition between tracks. The 4/4 kick drum does not remain fundamentally in the foreground; in the funk-jazz-tinged pieces by Baeka and Dinky its presence is withdrawn, although the compulsion to dance is never lost. Seth Troxler pays homage both to his Detroit roots and to the minimal house style of his new home, and as a result, he moves his hallmark sound beyond the limits of 12" releases for the first time. Of course, the Boogy Bytes trademark wouldn't be complete without another edition of Axl Jansen's "Shaking Heads" photos as the cover design. LOKO, MIRKO: Seventynine Remixes 12" (CADENZA 045EP)

Cadenza presents a special remix package of tracks from Mirko Loko's Seventynine, featuring Carl Craig and Ricardo Villalobos. Craig's remix of "Love Harmonic" stretches to nearly 12 minutes and, following a long, gradual build-up of rolling congas, trademark C2 sawtooth drones slice through a haze of strings. Villalobos' remix of "Takhtok" places the chanting children's choir of the original at center stage, framing them with a velvety curtain of fuzzy synthesizers and shirred, crumpled beats. This is Ricardo at his amniotic best.

Gatefold LP version on colored vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies only. 2009 release. German sexploitation soundtrack music from the 1960s and 1970s as scored by softcore sound-specialist Gert Wilden & Orchestra. Schulmädchen Report (trans. "Schoolgirl Report"), and its many sequels were exported, badly dubbed, and run to death. Wilden's music is a wonderfully demented pastiche that takes its inspiration from all kinds of sources -- "Dirty Beat" swipes from Led Zeppelin, but chucks in bits of acid rock, crazed Farfisa organ, and drum-work that sounds like tap-dancing pile-drivers. Other cuts teeter on the edge of pure lounge -- there's bits of smoky jazz, R&B, crazily-mangled surf music, and whatever else can be jammed in and will stick. One moment it's lolling saxophone, and the next it's James Last on amphetamines. It all fits, it's often hilarious, and it is absolutely worth keeping on hand.

2008 release. A legend who left a lasting mark on the world of music returns with a new studio album: Mark Stewart. Created and recorded between London, Vienna, Bristol and Berlin, Stewart's sixth full-length release, Edit, marks a welcome return to his solo career after numerous collaborations with, among others, Tricky, Massive Attack, Chicks On Speed, Adult and Primal Scream. As teenage front man and mastermind of seminal Bristol post-punk legends The Pop Group (1978-80), Stewart already used his microphone as a weapon. In an era that saw public opinion and perception tainted by Thatcher, Reagan and the Cold War, The Pop Group emerged as one of Britain's most radical exponents of new music and quickly gained notoriety well beyond the British Isles. Their until then unheard mix of punk, funk, dub, jazz and noise, countered by Mark Stewart's scathing political slogans and lyrics ("We Are All Prostitutes"), easily counts among the most impressive, provocative and lasting manifestations of musical spontaneity seen, heard and experienced by the end of the 1970s. After the group's dissolution in the early 1980s, members of The Pop Group re-emerged in a flurry of new bands and guises: Rip Rig & Panic (featuring the then still unknown Neneh Cherry), Pigbag (with their surprise Top 10 hit "Papa's Got A Brand New Pig Bag") and Maximum Joy. After a short stint with the New Age Steppers, Mark Stewart decided to pursue a solo career as Mark Stewart & The Maffia. His friend, production genius and ON-U sound owner Adrian Sherwood, took care of production and mixed the Maffia on their various tours. With Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald and drumming talent Keith Leblanc, Stewart recruited a truly exceptional rhythm section who had previously played with the likes of James Brown, Madonna, Africa Bambaata, George Clinton, Tackhead and many others. Die Schachtel presents an album by Switzerland-based composer, experimenter, guitarist and visual artist Luigi Archetti. Null is a monolithic, sinister and doomy drone masterpiece. Oscillating in filigree nuances, the modulation of a drone that seems to last an eternity alone indicates that the sense of real time has been canceled, while, at the same time, another acoustic track surfaces like a distant memory, only to disappear again. A universe of sound particles spreads out, in which the sounds provide no references to a possible location. What the ear might consider to be the crunching sound of snow crusts, the deep droning of ice breaking, the scraping of migrating glaciers is often merely an acoustic hallucination, while actually the sounds have been composed using the finest of sound particles, which Archetti's ear has taken from completely different sources, such as the hum of generators, or the white noise of a blank video tape being played, or drone sounds created with the E-bow, which he extracts from his electric guitar (often with scordatura tuning). An intermediate realm is created in which acoustic sedimentations are layered into a sound tapestry so dense, that it feels like there is almost no air left to breathe or to hear with anymore. But it also draws one in like an invitation to journey further into unexplored regions, a journey through timeless and spare acoustic events with a rivetingly hypnotic effect. Housed in a deluxe tri-fold digipack edition.

Originally issued by Gary Mundy's own Broken Flag label in 1987 on cassette, this is UK noise/industrial/power electronics wizards Ramleh's Hole In The Heart, now expanded and remastered on a double CD set, also including material from their 1987 Nerve cassette release. Here at last, is part of the "missing link" in the long and ever-evolving history of Ramleh. This material bridges the gap between the (for want of a better description) early "power electronics" material and the (for want of a better description) later "noise rock." Neither of these terms do justice to this pioneering group led by Gary Mundy. To quote Anthony Di Franco (the other half of the band these days): "...swirling phased feedback, fuzzed vocals and guitars. At the same time there were melodies, words and structures in the music, which itself consisted of very simple electronic and acoustic elements magnified to a colossal scale...." This music has a harmonic beauty, if you look for it, that all its imitators lack. Listen and you will hear the genesis of what was to follow from many '90s underground bands such as label mates and close collaborators, Skullflower. This double CD set is packaged in the classic Broken Flag stark, monochrome style.

What started almost twenty years ago with the first releases of mostly Romanian gypsy ensembles, dug up and recorded by Western field researchers behind the just-fallen Iron Curtain, has now turned into a global club movement. Nevermind the disco trash productions of turbo folk and manele starlets in the Balkans, it was mostly Western producers and DJs who, fascinated by the raw energy of the Balkan rhythms and the sweet melancholy and wild passion of Slavic and gypsy melodies, made the whole thing compatible for the dancefloor. Well, those neckbreaking Balkan tunes had always been danceable as one could witness at concerts of the leading Balkan brass bands. This is the second full-length release by Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm for Erased Tapes. As the curator of the Swedish boutique label Kning Disk's Piano Series, Peter Broderick invited Nils to record a new album of piano improvisations -- the result is The Bells, which is now released on Erased Tapes in the UK, Ireland and North America. Perhaps the most stunning aspect of what on the surface appears to be an entirely pre-planned and composed body of work comes with the discovery that these pieces were in fact improvised. These two friends share a common affinity in that they both possess an absolute mastery of melody, composition and performance -- able to deliver with devastating effect. The modest Mr. Broderick states "I remember thinking to myself as I lay there stunned, that I could spend ten years trying to write an amazing piece of piano music, and still it would never be half as good as these improvisations!" Recorded in a rented, beautiful old church in the heart of Berlin over two nights, Nils "just played," with the occasional instruction from Peter: "I spouted 'make a song using only the notes C, E, and G,' or 'make a song that you could imagine me rapping over the top of' ... At one point I was even inside the piano, laying on the strings, asking him to make a song called 'Peter Is Dead In The Piano.'" The resultant work The Bells shares the same excitement and air of playfulness. EUGENIUS: Oomalama & Tireless Wireless (Eugenius Radio Sessions) 2CD (SFIRE 012CD)

2003 release. Eugene Kelly's second band -- called Captain America for about five minutes, until the comic book's lawyers called -- got roughly 100 times the American interest that his first group, the Vaselines, were ever afforded, largely because by the time their first album, Oomalama, was released, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain had declared that the Vaselines were his favorite group. Cobain even went so far as to induce his old label Sub Pop to release all of the Vaselines' tracks on one CD, and to record a version of their "Molly's Lips" for a B-side that eventually ended up on the Incesticide compilation. Eugenius' Oomalama is an all-but-forgotten gem, 16 delightfully noisy indie pop tunes (including a faithful version of Beat Happening's oft-covered "Indian Summer") with nice touches like the '60s organ underpinning "Breakfast" making them sound a lot less claustrophobic than many albums of the day did. Kelly's melodic choruses get maximum mileage and Jamie Watson's production gets a surprising amount of musical and emotional shading out of the same multiply-overdubbed guitars it seemed like every other band was using. This reissue includes a bonus disc of live radio sessions, Tireless Wireless.

LEATHERFACE: Fill Your Boots CD (SFIRE 035CD)

Originally released in 1990, this is the Fire Records reissue of Leatherface's second album, Fill Your Boots. Memorably higher-octane than Bob Mould's Sugar and as intensely affecting as early Stiff Little Fingers, Leatherface formed in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear in the late '80s. Taking their name from the central masked character in cult classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, they remained relatively unknown within their own town, let alone country; it took several albums for the UK press to recognize that Leatherface were far more than just a good old-fashioned punk rock band and more than worthy of comparison with more illustrious counterparts in America, where a body of supporters had been singing the band's praises since the 1992 release of Mush. They were poised for a massive break-through, when singer Frankie Stubbs seemed to decide that he didn't want it anymore. A crying shame, because Leatherface really did make you believe that punk could still matter -- that it could be impassioned, intelligent and emotive without just re-treading the boards.

Thomas describes his process as such: "...when working on this album I would often be looking out to the sea, the hills, the mountains. I would do this a lot in the evenings -- dusk, with the sun/light in its dying moments." "A Dream Of A Spider" is an ambient, almost alt-country tune that sets a tone throughout this album as to how Thomas can paint such a visually-inspiring aural depiction with his music. It would be quick to conclude that his record is melancholic -- take the song "Hazer," which shimmers in its almost cathedral-like illumination. 2008 release. January 1992, Berlin: Alec Empire, Hanin Elias and Carl Crack form Atari Teenage Riot. The explosive mix of highly political and radical lyrics with punk, hardcore hip hop, techno and electronic music was called Digital Hardcore. This term was used by Alec Empire to name his label (DHR). In 1997 Nic Endo joined the band. After several records and tours, Atari Teenage Riot became famous to a worldwide audience. CHACONA, NICK: Love In The Middle CD (MOOD 011CD)

This is the debut full-length by Brooklyn's Nick Chacona. Writing and producing the songs that make up Love In The Middle were a veritable outpouring of the house hero's emotions as channeled through the many genres that make up Nick's ever-evolving sound. From the cosmic disco of album-opener "Especial" (penned with frequent production partner Anthony Mansfield), to the futuristic boogie-pop of "The Fear" (featuring Sheffield's disco songstress Kathy Diamond); the raw house of "Wait" (featuring the inimitable Brothers Vibe on vocal duties); the gorgeously emotive, Mr. Fingers-inspired "Be Like Olive"; or the deep, bassbin-shaking dub of "Eskayelator," it's clear that Nick's equally at home producing myriad styles. Speaking of home, Nick called many a place just that throughout the recording process, and it was these varied locations that also shaped the album's eclectic sound. Berlin's vibrant club life, not to mention his friends Sasse and Dirt Crew's James Flavour helped to give the album that soundsystem-savvy oomph. San Francisco brought the sunshine, and the opportunity to collaborate with Anthony Mansfield. In between snowboarding sessions in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and taking in the autumn foliage in upstate New York, Nick found solace in the peaceful environs the countryside had to offer. The ethereal, hand-painted artwork is courtesy of Shanan Campanaro -- the "love" he found "in the middle" of making the album. From his recent remix of Fever Ray's "Seven"; to Greg Wilson's recent inclusion of his and Mansfield's disco bomb "Oh Snap!," to his new project Beg To Differ with The Wurst Music Co's label boss, Roy Dank; to this absolutely stunning debut, Chacona is at the top of his game.
