VA: The Bombay Connection: Funk From Bollywood Action Thrillers CD (BC 001CD)
...1977-1984, Vol. 1. This is the first volume in a planned series of 6 CDs presenting the best, rarest and most exciting songs from the colorful history of Bollywood music, most of which are still gathering dust in Indian vaults and are unknown to the Western public. Bombay Connection Vol. 1: Funk from Bollywood Action Thrillers 1977-1984 showcases the sound of the Indian action film of the late '70s and early '80s. Under the influence of films like Shaft and Dirty Harry, a new kind of Indian action film came into being in 1970s India. To match the loud fights and fast chases, Indian composers developed an exciting brand of Bollywood funk. Wah-wah guitars, congas and funky Moogs were effortlessly blended with tablas, dhols and Indian melody lines. This album compiles 13 of the best, incredibly original Bollywood funk grooves, painting scenes of frantic chases through the back streets of Bombay, sexy seductive dances by female spies and secret plots conceived in subterranean headquarters by fake-moustached villains. The series is compiled by Bollywood connoisseur, researcher and top collector Edo Bouman, who carefully selected the songs, assuring that each of these tracks is an ear-tantalizing gem, compiled into an enjoyable, consistent listening experience. The Bombay Connection series will cover a multitude of exciting genres from the 1950s to the late '80s, including Bollywood horror, hippie psychedelics, spy flick suspense music, and stomping 1980s Indian disco. The 6-panel digipack comes with a colorful 30-page booklet containing well-researched info and a wealth of pictures. For the very first time, extensive research has been done into the history of Bollywood film music: interviews with composers and musicians have been conducted, and Bombay Connection has spared no energy or expense to locate the original stills and posters of the films. This is also the first Bollywood compilation CD to feature the Hindi song lyrics and English translations. Thus the booklet provides a wealth of information and pictures, sketching the original context in which these songs were made and enjoyed.

DUB TRACTOR: Sorry LP (CCO 045LP)
LP version. This is the third full-length release from Denmark's Anders Remmer aka Dub Tractor for the City Centre Offices label. Formerly a member of Danish supergroups Future 3 and System together with Thomas Knak (aka Opiate) and Jesper Skaaning (aka Acustic), his previous albums More Or Less Mono and Hideout marked a crossroad for Anders, increasingly focusing more and more on his guitar, bass and vocals. As a result, Sorry is a veritable full-blown, one-piece indie band. While his previous releases featured short glimpses of Anders' vocal capabilities, this album unfolds into a confident, lyrics-heavy collection of pure pop. With clear references to the shoegaze movements of the '90s, Anders Remmer merges this heritage with his very own blend of dub-fuelled sound design and prototype electronica. Delicate beats are the foundation for his deep, melancholic, yet uplifting songs. The opening track "And You Are Back" is not only a proper hit, it also shows perfectly what this album is all about, riding in on an anthemic, ascending/descending, washed-out guitar line against heart-tugging, lightly synthesized vocals. Against a backdrop of reliable dub thump, this album takes you under its wings, shifting between sparse arrangements and nodding in the direction of late works from bands like Slowdive to full-on walls of guitars in proper My Bloody Valentine style. Sorry is a musical tour de force through the more contemplative regions of your musical brain with exquisite, dreamy layers of electronics and guitars, and moody bass lines. Guaranteed to slow the pulse while still compelling you to sway.

NURSE WITH WOUND: Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine 2LP (DPROM 071LP)
...And An Umbrella. Regular 2LP edition (boxed edition with t-shirt and badge is now deleted), but still excessively limited and not so "available". Three sides of music, 1 side etched, this is the long-awaited re-issue of the timeless Nurse With Wound debut release from 1979. Described by Sounds at the time as a record that "makes The Faust Tapes sound like Carousel," nothing has changed to alter this view over the last 30 years, and to say that this work is the "Sgt. FUJIEDA, MAMORU: Obscure Tape Music of Japan Vol. 11: Radiated Falling CD (OPA 011CD)
Mamoru Fujieda is a Japanese post-minimalist composer, and Edition Omega Point releases some of his work from the early '80s. Both "Radiated Falling" (1980) and "The Art Of Fugue" (1981) are tape compositions in which sound materials of a prepared piano are electronically-processed and modulated in various ways. "Radiated Falling" is based on "Falling Scale No. 2" for piano (1975). The series of works entitled "Falling Scale" are composed almost entirely of descending scales as their structural elements. In these works, patterns are automatically produced by the difference in the number of scale tones or through the temporal discrepancy made when the tones descend. In "Falling Scale No. 2," a spiral line is successively transformed. The artist piled up the spiral line in several layers with the uneven timbres of the prepared piano producing sound materials for "Radiated Falling." The sound materials were then transformed to layered sonic textures through the ring modulator, the phase shifter, the harmonizer, and various delay processes. "The Art of Fugue" is based on a simple fugue in four voices from the first piece in The Art Of Fugue by J. S. Bach. The four voices were randomly cut into fragments, which were then reassembled to form four new voices. Each of the voices played by a differently prepared-piano was recorded on a multi-track recorder to produce sound materials for the piece. The sound materials for the prepared piano were then electronically-modulated and spatially processed. The randomly cut fragments of the fugue are interwoven at different tempos to make it "The Art Of Fugue" on the brink of collapse.

COLLINS, NICOLAS: Devil's Music CD/CD-ROM (EM 1086CD)
EM Records presents the CD and vinyl reissue of U.S. experimental electro-acoustic artist/circuit bender Nicolas Collins' live radio sampling masterpiece, Devil's Music, originally released on vinyl in 1986. Born and raised in New York City, Nicolas Collins has been hugely influential in contemporary electronic music, having performed world-wide for many years, collaborating with Christian Marclay, Elliot Sharp, David Shea, David Tudor and John Zorn, composing, recording, modifying circuits and inventing instruments, and spreading the good word through his writing (Handmade Electronic Music -- The Art Of Hardware Hacking 2nd Edition; Routledge, 2009) and teaching (Department of Sound, School of the Art Institute of Chicago). The pieces released here are only part of his ongoing, multifaceted and truly experimental activities. This edition of Devil's Music is served up in all its stuttering glory, a time capsule of the mid-'80s New York City airwaves, acclaimed by Philip Sherburne as "an early template for techno," with a feel somewhat akin to scratching turntablist madness, a block-rocking party put through a blender and re-assembled by body-popping demons. Also included is "Real Landscape," a 1987 "remix" recorded in Europe (originally released on cassette), and (CD-only) "The Spark Heard 'Round The World," a fascinating tape piece sourced from multi-band radio and scanner recordings, plus a video of a live performance of "Devil's Music" from 1987 in Birmingham, Alabama. And if you're still not satisfied, CD purchasers also get a downloadable software version of the original hardware circuitry used for Devil's Music which, a la David Tudor, constitutes the original composition itself. Make your own "Devil's Music!" Devil's Music is available on 2LP vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, and double CD in a triple-gatefold sleeve (with bonus audio track plus CD-Extra and software). 24-bit digitally remastered; containing a booklet with text in English & Japanese, including rare photos.

GEORGIA'S HORSE: The Mammoth Sessions CD (FIRE 128CD)
This is the debut album from Georgia's Horse. Texas is a graveyard and The Lone Star State is full of ghosts. Out on the road to Old El Paso lies the Rattlesnake Bomber Base near a town called Peyote. Once the home of fleets of B29 bombers and the plane called Enola Gay as well as many thousands of military personnel, it now stands empty. The only tenants are lizards and snakes. Even the rusted and rotted hulks of planes have been carted off by junk men and souvenir hunters. The roar of the war effort has been replaced by the whisper of the wind. A gentle absence of action. This is just one of several thousand abandoned settlements or ghost towns in the West Texan desert, but the haunted Americana of Georgia's Horse sounds like it could have come from any of them. Their debut album The Mammoth Sessions is redolent of sun-baked vacant lots, cracked runways, drifting tumble weed and dull orange rust. This collection of songs all sound like the aftermath of some emotionally violent event that has just left stillness and melancholia in its place. There are echoes of the (ex-pat) Americana of The New Pornographers, a light dusting of the folk psychedelia of Smog and the torrid and threatening country death songs of PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love. These 13 songs are anchored round the skewed and magnetic vision of singer/songwriter Teresa Maldonado and their brittle and skeletal songs are fleshed out by multi-instrumentalist Tiziano Hernandez (bass/guitars), Brad Thomason (drums) and Melly Rose (cello). One of many stand out tracks, "Snake & Sparrow" creaks and echoes as if recorded in a haunted house, on haunted equipment. And the title track briefly effloresces violently as if the ghost of the Enola Gay were bringing its terrible cargo home, before returning to gentleness once more. From the most basic of set ups, a deeply affecting and subtle beauty is achieved.

DRIVER, RYAN: Feeler Of Pure Joy CD (FIRE 129CD)
Ryan Driver is this unstoppable, quietly torrential flow of music, that has been coming out of Toronto, Ontario for a number of years now. He's been a key member of a number of the most interesting ensembles in the city, including Deep Dark United, The Reveries, The Silt (FIRE 127CD), The Guayaveras and The Fake New Age Music Band, and he's worked with Sandro Perri as the duo Double Suicide and Jennifer Castle in Castlemusic, and he has his own mutant jazz standards group, The Ryan Driver Quartet. He plays guitar and sings, but he's also an accomplished improviser, and he can break your heart improvising on a twangy ruler or blowing onto the surface of a rubber balloon. The songs here are mostly folk/country ballads from an imaginary country: they sound like JJ Cale, Joao Gilberto or John Martyn, soft but powerful and precise. But there's also live favorite "Spinning Towers," which is given an anthemic rock treatment, and "Why the Road?," which slowly shifts from folksong to hazy Rock Bottom-period Robert Wyatt mysticism. Toronto's alt-folk queen Jennifer Castle duets with Ryan on the opening "You Are Beside Me." Various members of the Rat-Drifting group, including Eric Chenaux and Martin Arnold, drop in to play some guitar, too. Ryan always sounds like he has come a long way to sing you a song. His voice contains vast North American distances, long cold winters and the endless, ugly monotony of the country, which can be broken and dissipated only by beer, love and music. Even when he sings jazz standards, the music isn't nostalgic or pessimistic; in fact, you can't tell whether he's talking about the past or the future. The fact that he's here now, singing these songs is, for those that need such things, a sign of great hope. And that's why this really is a Feeler Of Pure Joy.

JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER: Ballads Of The Revolution LP (FIRE 131LP)
LP version. Beginning in Portland, OR in 1994 as a duo, Tom Greenwood and Nester Bucket began Jackie-O Motherfucker as a conceptual/musical project exploring the possibilities of combining tape collage, free improvisation, and folk song structures. Both had played in many bands, and wanted to form a group that could be flexible enough to withstand the failure, and challenges they knew would be coming their way in the future if they were to keep the project alive long enough to achieve their goals. True to their early imaginings, JOMF became the mutable feast of psychedelic art, far exceeding the visions of either of them. Nester departed from the band and Greenwood carried on with JOMF, now functioning as a collective. Ballads Of The Revolution is the band's tenth studio record, and the culmination of 15 years spent defining their unique take on American music. The record begins with an arrangement of a traditional ballad -- "Nightingale" features Greenwood's vocals and guitar with the lush, open accompaniment of Bob Jones' double bass and the pedal steel guitar of Lewi Longmire. "Dark Falcon" is an improvisation and remix of a song written and recorded by the Lucky Dragons. It's built on samples and loops of the original recording, including vocals by Honey Owens. Side one closes with a JOMF original, "Skylight," which has been a part of the band's live set for a few years, and has been beautifully rendered in the studio. "The Corner" begins with the pulsing bass of a Roland keyboard, accompanied by turntable manipulations and the sparse sting of Owens' guitar, its dark minimalism a new classic moment for the band. "The Cryin' Sea" was written in Arhus, Denmark during an amazing live set where an enthusiastic audience pushed the band to bonkersville. Featuring incredible guitar work by Nick Bindeman, and special guest Michael Dustdevil, who fills out the recording with raw fuzz guitar. The closing track, "A Mania," is a rare radio friendly track by the band that perfectly finishes the album.

GARWOOD, DUKE: The Sand That Falls CD (FIRE 132CD)
Duke Garwood has always been a wanderer. His early musical life was spent learning his chops in the then-seedy beach bars of My Lai, Thailand. Returning to the UK in the '90s, Garwood played around and about in squat parties and blues clubs, before releasing his first album, Holy Week, in 2005. This was followed by Emerald Palace in 2007, an album recorded in a lonely hut up on the North Downs. You might also have encountered Garwood adding screeds of brass to Archie Bronson Outfit's live shows, or playing in The Woodsmen -- all part of the nomadic wanderings of a musician and artist who's perfectly content to exist and create on his own terms. Now Garwood returns with his first album for Fire records. Recorded in a vast, deserted house that was as much building site as abode, it's soon apparent that The Sand That Falls is aptly named. For as Garwood picks his blues and murmurs his songs, time vanishes as he transports you to a world soundtracked by sparse plucking, gentle percussion and his deep, thoughtful vocal. Though steeped in the blues and deeply influenced by his hero Thelonious Monk, Garwood never becomes distracted into reverential homage. There's a fractured, lo-fi feel to what he does, an unconcern with rigid adherence to tradition. In the scattered sounds and meditative feel, the space in which The Sand That Falls was recorded almost becomes audible in the music. On the final, title track, made up of hums and the anxious, repeated banging of a drum, Garwood intones "leave no trace... leave no trace..." So Duke Garwood leaves us, yet again wandering forth in search of musical pastures new.

FOSTER, JOSEPHINE: Graphic As A Star LP (FIRE 136LP)
LP version. This is the first record from U.S. minstrel-folk chanteuse Josephine Foster on Fire Records. Graphic As A Star is based upon the poems of the 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson. Josephine lays stair-steppy melodies beneath a collection of Dickinson gems and sings them with a burnished soulfulness like the purple sunsets so often described in the poems. Massachusetts mountains, pearled spider-webs and folk hero William Tell, are all present in this unforgettable meeting of Dickinson's poesy and Foster's music, making a natural and inevitable whole. Ms. Foster is a Colorado-born artist whose songwriting draws from far corners of the musical spectrum to form a truly singular body of work. Her voice is sometimes compared to singers as disparate as Grace Slick, Shirley Collins or Tiny Tim, and it's certainly difficult to pigeonhole her varied music. She says her craft is strongly shaped by "Tin Pan Alley on my maternal side, rock and roll on the paternal side, Western folk music by birth, art-song and classical music via my adolescent passions." A personal introduction to Graphic As A Star from Josephine herself: "As to the source of these interludes, I wrote them this past winter while living in this remote, half-abandoned Spanish mountain village, a deadly quiet place with occasional interruptions of goats' bells, donkey brays, and the church bell announcing the passing of another old neighbor every day or so. I had just a few books with me, and one was the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Her poems proved such good company, that in a few short weeks appeared this 'song cycle.' Whether for the irony of distance and homesickness being 3 years away, or through inevitable kinship with this long-dead lady, these songs seem to veer more towards America than ever before. Back in music school, I heard a few musical settings of Dickinson made by classical composers, but it's my hope to unite some of her poems into more intimate and intuitive musical settings, being so lyrical and transparent as they are.'"

TELEVISION PERSONALITIES: Mummy Your Not Watching Me CD (SFIRE 007CD)
2002 release. The second full-length Television Personalities release adds a full-time bass player to the original trio and sets the Wayback Machine ahead about 18 months from the debut's Swinging Carnaby Street sound. The darker, more psychedelic Mummy Your Not Watching Me is considerably less twee than And Don't the Kids Just Love It, covering Dan Treacy's increasingly self-effacing lyrics in a wash of keyboards and phased guitars. There are a few songs that still show the influence of the earlier Television Personalities sound, including the wistful "Magnificent Dreams" and a remake of the single "Painting By Numbers," originally released under the name the Gifted Children, but the key track is the lengthy "David Hockney's Diaries," an acid rock drone that introduces an entirely different texture into the band's sound that Treacy would explore further on the next several albums.

JARVINEN, ANNA: Man Var Bland Molnen CD (HAPNA 043CD)
This is the second full-length album by Sweden's Anna Järvinen, the follow-up to her debut Jag Fick Feeling. Man Var Bland Molnen ("One Was Among The Clouds") is produced and recorded by Gustav Ejstes (Dungen), who also plays a variety of instruments on the album. Other musicians include Reine Fiske, Fredik Swahn, Johan Holmegard, Leo Svensson, Mattias Bergqvist and Anders Nygårds. The collaboration with Dungen already began on Anna's first record, who participated on the main part of the album. Concerning the choice of Ejstes as producer, Anna says in Sonic magazine (Sweden) that "nobody has like Gustav, silently and immediately, understood my music. I wanted to try and leave the songs with him so he could put his mark on and in them." Seldom has there been such a breakthrough for an artist on a small label in Sweden as with the release of Jag Fick Feeling. Anna was nominated for a Swedish Grammy and P3 Guld prize, awarded Stockholm City's music prize, and was interviewed in virtually every Swedish paper. The record also got a lot of attention in Finland and Anna toured in both countries during fall 2007 and spring/summer 2008. The first single from Man Var Bland Molnen is the track "Äppelöga," ("Apple-Eye"), a song with an almost countrified, Americana swing. All tracks, of course, feature Anna's sweetly breathy voice in Swedish, and a wholesome helping of piano, harmonica, flute, strings, and laid-back acoustic guitar -- lending the whole affair a soft/light rock/California morning sunniness. Once again transcends all pop language barriers through its apple-cheeked charm. "i wrote some songs about sex, sorrow abuse, falling in love and pure summery frustration. then i lost my way. you and i are the only ones left now here, among the clouds. come." --Anna Järvinen

VA: Africa Boogaloo: The Latinization Of West Africa 2LP (HJR 041LP)
Gatefold 2LP version. Honest Jon's presents a collection of music from '60s and '70s West Africa that is heavily influenced by Latin sounds from the era, representing a mutual cultural exchange that would have a permanent impact on the evolution of each region's trademark sound. Much of what makes modern Latin music so irresistible came from Africa in the first place. When the first waves of African rhythms, reconstituted in the Caribbean, returned home on radios and records, Africans -- especially in West and Central Africa -- received them with great enthusiasm. Staid dance bands that replicated European music soon began to swing as Caribbean accents settled in their rhythm sections. By the 1950s, Africa had produced its own Calypsonians, and more than one African musician changed his name to give it a Latin flavor. Some even composed songs in Spanish, while others wrote nonsense lyrics that only sounded like the real thing. No band mixed local and Latin styles more successfully than Orchestre Baobab and its leader Balla Sidibe. The mesmerizing "On Verra Ca" finds Baobab leaning in the direction of the stuttering mbalax sound that Youssou N'Dour carried to great popularity. Other Senegalese bands followed the trend, like the Rio Band, Orchestre N'Guewel, and Laba Sosseh from Gambia (like his compatriot Amara Toure) who styled himself as a salsa singer after his hero Johnny Pacheco. From Benin, Gnonnas Pedro sang in every pop style imaginable, but he seems especially at home in an Afro-Cuban embrace, as you will hear on the 1977 recording "Adigbedoto." The closing track also comes from Benin, a 1976 recording by the celebrated Orchestre Poly Rythmo -- though the singer, Pierre Tchana, hails from Cameroun. "Quiero Wapacha" features another Camerounian singer, Charles Lembe, and also from Cameroun is legendary African Jazz saxophonist, Manu Dibango, who is featured here alongside Le Grand Calle and Cuban flutist Don Gonzalo. Orchestre OK Jazz recorded any number of Afro-Cuban inspired sides: "Micorrason" is one of the band's earliest songs, recorded soon after their formation in 1956. There is no better evidence of the push-me-pull-you, back-and-forthing between two cultures than the Afro-Latin compilation we have here. All the flow from an unparalleled period of exuberance and creativity after World War II had ended and before homegrown tyranny had yet to descend on the land. It was Africa's moment, optimistic and free. You can hear it in the music. --Adapted from text by Gary Stewart, author of Rumba On The River: A History of the Popular Music of the Two Congos.

VA: Kompakt Total 6 2CD (KOMP 042CD)
2009 repress, originally released in 2005. In an era of scatter-brained electronic music compilations, Total stands alone. This is not Essential Trance 35, not This Is Hi-NRG Vol. XII, this is Kompakt Total 6, this is Kompakt. The Total series began in 2000, when the Koln label compiled their own 12"s. Since then, every so often, a new Total is born. Because it is Kompakt, because it is carefully crafted electronic sound -- it has a continuity, a purpose, a constant quality. Unlike disposable dance compilations, Total contains music you can only find on Kompakt vinyl, and even some Total exclusives. Each and every Total is special. Kompakt Total 6, however, is by far the biggest. With its orange hue in the simple, traditional Kompakt design, Kompakt Total 6 looks harmless. Until it is opened -- revealed: a full 2-disc selection of some of the hottest sounds from the underground, on CD for the first time. Gems like the debut cut from Baxendale (remixed by Michael Mayer), an unreleased Justus Köhncke track, an unreleased Reinhard Voigt burner. Hard to believe Rex the Dog has never been on CD, the way it has gotten around. Or the landmark nano-trance sound of the MFA. The discerning neo-lounge DJ has had Scsi-9's "Mini" in the record bag for months, here it is for you. The list goes on and on: new Ferenc, new DJ Koze, sheesh. Twenty-four tracks in all. That's two dozen Kompakt gems in one place, in their trademark collectible design: the circle motif, the sans-serif font, the bright colors. In so many ways, Kompakt represents the label of the future. In so many ways, Total represents the Compilation of Today. Kompakt Total 6 is out, it's two CDs... and it's aural dynamite. Blasting Zone Ahead.

VA: Pop Ambient 2006 CD (KOMP 047CD)
2009 repress, originally released 2005. The sixth edition of Kompakt's highly-anticipated yearly ambient experiment, that includes new tracks specific to this compilation. Pop Ambient is programmed poetry, field data processing -- it is like a sweet way of getting drunk without having a hangover, because Kompakt knows how to slow it down like none other. Pop Ambient is the orchid in the pleasure garden of ambient music. Pop Ambient 2006 features not only well-known heroes like Markus Guentner, The Orb, Ulf Lohmann, Triola, Andrew Thomas and the enchanting Tetsuo Sakae from Japan and his project called Pass Into Silence -- Pop Ambient 2006 also features some hot new entrants, for example jazzy Uli Teichmann who comes up with free piano improvisations over smoothed sound echoes and who, as the names suggests, is the father of the lively Teichmann Brothers. You will also find two Pop Ambient cover versions: Fleetwood Mac's classic hit "Albatross" in a wonderful version produced by Kohncke/Heimermann and already known from Speicher 031. And Klimek's version of Eric Satie's masterpiece "Gymnopedie." In the meantime, the Pop Ambient series enters its sixth year and has become a vital part of Kompakt's label profile. And this year again, it is the perfect Christmas present.

FAR EAST FAMILY BAND: Nipponjin LP (ASH 3009LP)
CD version previously-released on Phoenix Records, now available in a vinyl version. Regarded by many as the first Japanese progressive rock group, the Far East Family Band featured the keyboardist and future new age composer, Kitaro. A keyboard-dominated space rock band, the Far East Family Band played extended compositions that brought comparisons to Tangerine Dream and early Pink Floyd. Nipponjin (1975), the band's second album under their new name (after their Far Out moniker), featured re-recorded material from the previous The Cave Down To Earth (1974) as well as Nihonjin and was produced by Tangerine Dream's Klaus Schultz. One of Japan's earliest prog bands, Far East Family Band became hugely popular in Japan and also achieved considerable attention in Europe. VILLALOBOS, RICARDO: Alcachofa 3LP (PLAY 083LP)
2009 repress on vinyl! Triple vinyl LP version, originally released in 2003. "Alcachofa, an album that, like its namesake -- the humble artichoke -- peels away in layers, stripping back rubbery leaves to reveal a sweet, pulpy interior crowned by a halo of thorns. 'Easy Lee,' the album's opener, is perversely delicious, pure dancefloor introversion. Graced by plangent, computer-modified vocals, the tune -- a staple in Richie Hawtin's afterhours sets -- is at once stark and darkly romantic, surface-bound and curiously hollowed, hyper-sexed and dead to the touch. It expands upon Villalobos' interest in processed vocals, introduced with 'What You Say Is More Than I Can Say' on an earlier 12" Play 62 -- here in an edited version, which offsets rubberized techno stomp with delusional robot groans to produce a uniquely sensual disorientation. Not all of Alcachofa is so introverted, but most of it is marked by the same kind of restraint, not hesitation. 'Theogenese' juggles South American syncopations, minimalist click-tracking, and '80s synth-drums, all suffused in a delicate sunrise aura, until every beat glows golden. 'Bahaha Hahi,' traveling under a name suggesting some tropical imbalance, dresses up subconscious vocals in clicks and gurgles -- the sound of snorkeling while stoned. A simpler rhythmic experiment is 'I Try To Live (Can I Live),' an excursion into flattened-out funk and artificial mouth harp. But the record's crowning glory must be 'Dexter,' which steadily cycles through a series of improbable chord changes like a cat prowling one of M.C. Escher's surreal staircases. Pensive, poignant, moving like water under ice, the track sucks you in and holds you deep in the heart of things -- and in the heart of Alcachofa. This isn't techno as we knew it; it's a biological experiment, a Petri dish of private elation and muttered damnations, a morphology of voices and tones and exhalations rubbed raw with salt and gravel. Alcachofa presents metamorphosis in play: restless, irrevocable. Wrapped in rubber, green and meaty, the world sounds different now."

SOULEYMAN, OMAR: Dabke 2020: Folk & Pop Sounds of Syria CD (SF 049CD)
Repressed again! Sublime Frequencies is pleased to present the second volume of Northeast Syrian dabke music from legendary vocalist Omar Souleyman and his group. This CD was compiled by Mark Gergis to coincide with the Sublime Frequencies UK/European tour in May and June of 2009, featuring live performances by Omar Souleyman himself. Culled from dozens of cassettes recorded in Syria from 1999-2008, the music here is an extension of Omar's Highway to Hassake: Folk & Pop Sounds of Syria (SF 031CD) release, touching on some previously-unheard angles. Their trademark serpentine synthesizers, electrified bouzok (traditional stringed instrument) and driving rhythms forge a severe form of "new wave dabke" with a live energy and integrity that captures the essence of the Syrian Northeast; one-of-a-kind Syrian dabke party tunes, regional atabat-styled crooners, and unbelievable Iraqi party jams. The CD is packaged in a cardboard sleeve with a paper insert.

CHEF & RAMADANMAN: Dubstep Allstars Vol. 07 2CD (TEMPA 015CD)
This is volume 7 of Tempa's original and essential Dubstep Allstars series, previously featuring mixes curated by DJ Hatcha, DJ Youngsta, Kode9, N-Type, and Appleblim. Discovery, not familiarity, has been the key to the success of this series, and this philosophy continues as Chef and Ramadanman take the reigns on this double disc expedition which unearths newfound pleasures aplenty. Chef, much lauded for his main room DJ sets, employs a more show-and-tell technique for this mix. Released from the obligations of moving a peak-time crowd, Chef affords each riddim good time to be absorbed. Rapid-fire mixes are replaced with subtle mixer effects and 1 bar loops. In some cases, tracks are simply cut out to make way for the next. On paper, this style could be almost nonchalant, but upon listening, you realize nothing has been left to chance. The peak-and-trough workout continues in earnest with Ramadanman on the second disc, which reveals an acute sense of rhythm in both production and mixing. Testing a rookie raver's balance, he throws elastic rhythms into the mix and collides sonics to create multi-textured soundscapes. Consistently demonstrating impeccable taste, Ramadanman draws on a school of artists who, like him, favor a clean, considered sound. He throws in dashes of grime with a handful of assured and abrupt riddims as well as the technoid, ethereal and rave-era influenced production which has allowed him to carve his niche as a DJ. Artists on both mixes include: Dub Mechanics, Chefal and Coki, Doctor, G Double E, Von D, Lady Phe Phe, Skream, Kito, DJ 200F and J Kamata, Cyrus, Mala, Mr. Lager, Alys, Distance, Conquest, Benga, Silkie, Noah D, Cotti, Unknown, Ghost, Christine Vaccine, Kito, LD, Trolley Snatcher, Kutz, D1, Cluekid, Untold and D. SPECTRE FOLK: Compass, Blanket, Lantern, Mojo LP (ARB 003LP)
"As anxiety encroaches with the cold air of winter thank the stars for the whiskey/weed warmth of Compass, blanket, lantern, mojo --- it flows through you like a liquid howl of light." -- Thurston Moore "For an out-of-it fogie like myself, it's tough to keep up with the many musical hats our boy Peter Nolan sports. There's of course The Magik Markers and then there's Lil Dusty, Spectre Flux, Spectre Folk, Folk Spectre, Cops, etc. I gotta admit I sorta lost the thread on Petes' musical output for awhile there due to the simple fact I couldn't keep up with it all. My chrome dome would literally throb with all the names and phony catalogue numbers that must accompany all these sound whims that must fly off his ginger head like bats from a belfry. Luckily, I put down the Brupenex long enough to catch up with Compass, Blanket, Lantern, Mojo, Nolans' latest expulsion under his Spectre Folk moniker. As expected, the album reeks of the musty homespun psychedelic scent that would make both Al Simones and Uncle Neil Young red as a beet. The tunes are hazy with hope and bobbing audio to spare. Seagulls or rusty bedsprings sound off in the crackly distance on one track and I get a salty taste in my mouth like I licked the third pier boardwalk in Wildwood circa '79. And check out the track 'Burning Bridge' where Petes' voice soars and wavers like a wounded dove flying to the safety of a clean cage and the awaiting name of 'Walter.' The whole thing is a gorgeous, fully conscious stumble into a self made sunset and it just reminds me of something someone never said to me 'It's not over until you declare everyone a loser and paint yourself in a corner'." -- Tony Rettman

SUN RA: Disco 3000 CD (ARTYARD 101CD)
"Recorded at The Teatro Cilak, 1/23//1978, Milan Italy - Sun Ra: piano, organ, Moog, Crumar Mainman, vocals - John Gilmore: tenor sax, drums, vocals - Luqman Ali: drums, vocals - Michael Ray: trumpet, vocals. In the winter months of 1977-1978, philosopher, pianist and bandleader Sun Ra was in Italy. The Italian tour resulted in releases on Sun Ra's own Saturn label, all of which have long been out of print and all but impossible to find. With the re-release of Disco 3000, one of the most celebrated of these elusive Saturn gems is once more available. This release, and its companion Media Dreams, capture a side of Sun Ra's work - small ensemble, close form, original composition, rather minimal - that is otherwise under-represented. Depending heavily on Ra's electric and electronic keyboards (including the mysterious Crumar Mainman - of which even the company has no record) and, more unusually, on his intelligent use of sequencers and rhythm machines, this is an important window on the evolution of Ra's musical thinking, rendered even more transparent by the economy of its means; a quartet comprising only saxophonist John Gilmore, trumpeter Michael Ray and drummer Luqman Ali." 24 bit (mastered from the original tapes). 6 panel digipack features biographical notes by Michael Ray.

The first track on the B-side, Norman Nodge gives 'Cosmic Blast' his trademark touch of dirty simple techno. The breakdown in the middle will make your woofers bleed!!!! The second track on the B-side is a dub techno track with lots of elements from a 2 hour field recording Resoe did in his backyard from the studio. FERRARI, LUC: Les Arythmiques CD (BLUE 019CD)
"Les Arythmiques is one of the final works created by electroacoustic composer Luc Ferrari. A starting point for the piece was the challenge to represent in sound the jolt of electricity that had been sent across his heart to treat his arrythmia. The sound that he finally crafted to his satisfaction is the crackling, vaguely terrifying one that jolts Les Arythmiques into life and reappears throughout to interrupt the proceedings at the most unlikely moments. The sound environment that the electrical shocks interrupt is that of the EKG's regular beeps, the distant tolling of a church bell, and even more distant sounds resembling birds. In other words, it's the sound of enforced rest, of a patient immobilized. This relatively small repertoire of concrete sounds is examined with a disorienting repetitiveness that brings to mind the mobile-like quality of many of Ferrari's electroacoustic works. Here that quality is combined with the lightning-quick stabs associated with Erik M and Otomo Yoshihide, two artists with whom Ferrari collaborated in his final years. Les Arythmiques ultimately moves beyond the hospital room by delving into an archive of remembered sounds. Murmurings in Italian give way to the English-language interjection 'Are y'all familiar with the parts of a saddle?' -- the composer's reflection on material gathered in the American Southwest for his Far-West News series. Ferrari's characteristic humor is here, particularly in the superimposition of diverse sound environments. But Les Arythmiques also possesses a nagging unease, a persistent gravity that both listener and composer cannot shake. Les Arythmiques was included as part of the ten-CD box set Luc Ferrari: L'Oeuvre Électronique (Ina GRM). This is the first time that it has appeared as a separate release."

GRUBBS, DAVID: Hybrid Song Box.4 CD (BLUE 020CD)
"David Grubbs's 26-minute soundtrack to Angela Bulloch's Hybrid Song Box.4 picks up sonically where An Optimist Notes the Dusk left off. Grubbs brings his thick, solid-body electric guitar tone to the most relaxed of tempos, the most spacious of handlings. This instrumental soundtrack is based on a short piece for electric guitar, followed by an interstitial section created with feedback from the last note of the guitar piece. This A/B structure is repeated three times. With each iteration, the guitar composition becomes progressively more scuffed, more degraded. The interstitial section begins at its gentlest and most transparent, and the material gradually becomes stronger and more harmonically distinct over the course of its three iterations. The first composition wanes, the second waxes. Hybrid Song Box.4 is Angela Bulloch's most recent work in a series of 'Pixel Box' sculptural installations. Hybrid Song Box.4 was first shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum as part of the exhibition Theanyspacewhatever."

As he started going deeper into the scene, he came to the point where he became a DJ and later on he also started creating his own tracks on PC. This led him to start his own studio, working almost every day on tracks. As a result some very good tracks came out and this way he started to show his talent for production. He creates his tracks with a specific sound and a very positive energy that puts a smile on the face every listener. The quality of his production as well as his performance as a DJ are improving and developing day by day and there is no doubt that the future will bring him great success. FUNK ETHICS: Blues Is Now 12" (DST 008EP)
"3-track debut release from the UK's Funk Ethics, first noticed and permanently represented by London's legendary dubstep label Destructive Records. 'Blues Is Now' is the tune that launched FE into the limelight and was quickly picked up by Mary Anne Hobbs and showcased on her Radio 1 show, it was originally featured on the Destructive CD album (DSTCD001). Two brand new tracks, 'Dub Fluid' and 'Trans Europa Step,' are showcased on the flip, good support and a good buzz on these tracks as the funk-tech sounds of the Funk Ethics roll on into 2010."

SHEARING PINX: Weaponry LP (D 031LP)
"Divorce was so pleased with how Shearing Pinx delivered on the Haruspex 7" that we decided to up the ante considerably and release a double LP in two parts. In return the Pinx have gone all in with the new material. Weaponry pt. 1 is a mountain that will remain visible in the sea of astounding, bizarre releases Shearing Pinx have been pouring for the last half decade. It is made clear from the first moments of the opening track; the Vancouver trio has been committed here to tape while in rare form. This LP sets up a classic, demento-tuned twin guitar battle where a nonchalant vocal delivery squares off against the drum set's muscular fake jazz-jizz-isms. William S. Burroughs used a shotgun to create paintings. Shearing Pinx use musical instruments to wound and maim. Tunes for the unglued. Artwork by Rick White of Eric's Trip / Elevator / Rick White Album. Edition of 600. RIYL: Harry Pussy, No New York, Sonny Sharrock."

NOVELLER/AIDAN BAKER: Colorful Disturbances LP (D 032LP)
"Guitars warped so hard they dissolve into pure consciousness! Seriously, this record had to happen because these two are the NOW of transcendental guitar weirdness. In families like ours where deformed music of one kind or another pours out of the speakers all day long, Toronto's Aidan Baker is a household name. He is no doubt one of the most imaginative experimental musicians of the new generation, quickly creating a universe of limitless sound with his bursting discography. He offers this record an extensive piece which mixes drone, texture, and an ever-bowing foundation -- imagine the sound of falling backwards... forever. The new blood on this split is guitarist Sarah Lipstate from Brooklyn, New York (aka Noveller). Sarah's prepared twin guitar works up a slow hypnotic force, gently pulling way out to the furthest deep end of pulses and patterns. Beautiful repetitions effortlessly skirt over a dark undercurrent. A+++ listen. Edition of 600 copies."

DOG DAY: Elder Schoolhouse 12" (D 033EP)
"These odd duck popsters sound totally sizzled on this new 12 inch 45. Side A is a collection of tunes rolled-up earlier this year at Rick White's Elder Schoolhouse studio. It includes a late night number written by Mr. White especially for his Halifax guests. Flip it over, and the entire B side takes a hazy journey lead by infinite guitar, starting with an ending and answering only to that most distant call. Dig? 5 songs - 26:55 minutes. SUN RA: Medicine For A Nightmare - The Singles LP (DOX 821LP)
"Sun Ra: alien from Saturn or Herman Blount from Alabama? Either way, Sun Ra is one of the most interesting and prolific musicians in the history of jazz. Decades before his time, Sun Ra and his band, calling themselves the 'Arkestra,' began forming their own alternative reality, a new plane of cultural existence in which blacks were all powerful beings, gods from another planet sending their intergalactic message through jazz music. This idea went on to influence everyone from Funkadelic to the Outkast; in fact, when asked about Sun Ra, George Clinton once said, 'Yeah, Sun Ra is out to lunch, same place I eat at.' Do not miss this compilation of Sun Ra's rare early 7"s -- for the first time ever in one collection on vinyl!"

WILLIAMS, HANK: I Saw The Light LP (DOY 618LP)
On 180 gram vinyl. "Once in a great while a truly superlative musical talent comes along, it only happens a handful of times per century, and one of those times 'it' was Hank Williams. Despite his swift and total rise to super stardom by the age 25, by 29 he was dead in the back of his own Cadillac...but it is what happened in the meantime that made all the difference. While America, returning victorious from the War in 1945, attempted to create an image of a invincibility, wealth and power in the face of its citizens and the world, there was a boy with a guitar from a place called 'Wrong Side of the Tracks', Alabama, who had another story to tell, a story that, amid all the propaganda and ticker tape parades, Americans could relate to and, judging from the record sales, obviously wanted to hear, and from 1946 to 1951 Hank Williams recorded enough hits to last country music stations for the following fifty. He dominated the country music charts throughout this period (with 11 number 1 songs and many more in the top ten), and songs like 'Cold Cold Heart', 'Hey Good Lookin'', and 'Your Cheatin' Heart', have become standards in American music. These five albums represent a complete chronological retrospective (1946-1951) of the man who revolutionized not only country music, but pop music as well." Tracks - Side A: 1. Calling You 2. Never Again (Will I Knock On Your Door) 3. Wealth Won't Save Your Soul 4. When God Comes And Gathers His Jewels 5. I Don't Care (If Tomorrow Never Comes) 6. My Love For You (Has Turned To Hate) 7. JACKSON, WANDA: Wanda Jackson LP (DOY 622LP)
On 180 gram vinyl. "Originally released in 1958, by the time her debut album came out Jackson, only 21 at the time, was already a seasoned performer. Discovered while still in high school singing country for an Oklahoma City radio station, by 1955 she was touring with Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to sing more in the rockabilly style, where she soon gained a huge fan base. However, this first album for Capitol shows just how versatile she could be, able to sing anything from traditional country to pop. She was also, interestingly the first country singer to bring a more glamourous style (one that would soon become standard in the country world) into her stage image, thanks to her mother's handmade flashy stage costumes. GUTHRIE, WOODY: Dust Bowl Ballads LP (DOY 623LP)
180 gram vinyl. "This is the first record that 'the Oklahoma cowboy' recorded in NYC after his arrival in 1940 for Alan Lomax as part of his work for the Library of Congress. Originally released as three separate 78 rpm records, these are Guthrie's tales about one of the most dire periods in rural America, the Dust Bowl era (also known as the Dirty Thirties). Repressed by Smithsonian Folkways in 1964 during the American folk revival years, this quintessential work proves that Guthrie was a true minstrel of the other face of America, the one that you can't find in history books: tales of poverty, migration, storms, illness, hunger and harsh criticism of the American government, incapable of committing to equality. Guthrie would become very popular among city radicals and idealists, and thanks to records like this, a true icon of social activism in the cradle of capitalism."

HENRY & PIERRE SCHAEFFER, PIERRE: Symphonie Pour Un Homme Seul/Concerto Des Ambiguites LP (DOZ 401LP)
On 180 gram vinyl. "Electronic / avant-garde music pioneer and founder of the French musique concrète movement, Pierre Schaeffer, a radio engineer, believed that any sound could be music, and was one of the first to experiment with tape looping, splicing and sampling. He was also one of the first to record music on magnetic tape. Drawing inspiration from the Italian Futurists, he emphasized the double meaning of the word 'play', meaning to play an instrument, but also to have fun and enjoy oneself. Pierre Henry, a classically trained musician, was one of Schaeffer's disciples and together they co-wrote the revolutionary Symphonie pour un Homme Seul, recorded in 1950. Despite its title, it is not a symphony in the classical sense, but a kind of suite divided into 12 movements. It is a musical collage featuring vocal fragments, that are at times recorded backwards, accelerated or repeated, and other sounds like whistles, footsteps, doors slamming, metallic sounds, and a prepared piano. However, what is important about this piece is not merely its intrinsic musical value, but its influence on so many future generations of musicians in so many genres. Symphonie pour un Homme Seul, over half a century later, remains a pioneering experiment in the search for new aural horizons. The Concerto side reveals Henry's personal approach to dissonance, with a strong impact of illogical sequences in the piano 'duel': the two instruments seem to collide in a furious rejection of the traditional idea of music, generating a clash of noises that reproduces the sonic pollution of the modern times."

HENRY, PIERRE: Le Microphone Bien Tempéré LP (DOZ 402LP)
On 180 gram vinyl. "Electronic music pioneer, Pierre Henry, was a classically trained French pianist and percussionist, but gained notoriety as one of the driving forces behind the French avante-garde movement 'musique concrète', which attempted make music by using 'real' sounds, like trains on tracks, dogs barking, footsteps, etc., in place of actual instruments and then electronically manipulate them in ways that had never been seen before, effectively redefining the very idea of music itself, and forcing listeners to ask themselves the question, 'what is music?'. Many did, and the many answers to this question went on to inspire scores of artists and musicians, and the ripple effect is still being felt today. The idea that any naturally occurring sound could be music was, to say the least, a new concept at the time, and so it helped that the movement had the backing of someone who, like Henry, was a classically trained, or 'serious'musician, as movement founder Pierre Schaeffer would have defined him. This piece, Le Microphone bien Tempéré, written by Henry in 1951, was the first attempt at notated musique concrete."

CHATMAN, VERNON: Final Flesh DVD (DC 406DVD)
"NEW from Vernon Chatman, a co-creator of some of this millennium's most outre cable television programming (Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel and -- yeah -- Doggy Fizzle Televizzle - !) is a DVD destined to change the way we look at entertainment, pornography and probably the legal system. Final Flesh is a feature film produced in four parts: the script written by Vernon was divided up and submitted to four unique film production companies that work exclusively in the field of customized adult content. The companies' shared charter is to produce a film that explores the writer's chosen fetish -- and with this in mind, Vernon wrote with demented determination, in order to push the definition of fetish into the realm of the cosmically absurd. Then he sat back to see what his charges would deliver. The resulting film is an epic narrative for our time. Final Flesh is a surreal, apocalyptic My Dinner With Andre -- in other words, existential, sublime and ridiculous, featuring unmistakeably porno production values and shudderingly unseasoned porno actors and actresses -- but no actual sex! Chatman's sexworker hirelings applied themselves earnestly to his cerebral text (never suspecting the prank nature of the project). Working in complete isolation from each other, they made Final Flesh a cinematic 'exquisite corpse' whose fervid rottings comprise an insurgency in the field of...well, all the fields that involve people looking at other people for entertainment. Final Flesh isn't just a meta-comedic concept whose time has come -- it 's also a hot evening's entertainment filled with religion, sex, philosophy, fashion, culture and 'reality' (with all the pathos that implies), plus some really amazing dialogue. Few will sit the fence on this. Few should. Final Flesh is a confrontation and a contradiction that deserves its day in (kangaroo) court. Fortunately, it 's the way of the world that the curious and easily influenced will be drawn into the web that is Final Flesh, whether they like it or not -- thus dissolving its concepts of 'avant-garde porn' and 'comedy' into the unsuspecting mainstream, where their questionable merits will have the desired evolutionary impact. If your spirit is willing -- the Flesh will freak you!" Running time: 71 min.; NTSC all-region format.

CLUEKID: Chicken Foot/Shifty 12" (EAR 012EP)
"It's been a while now since Cluekid released his debut single here on Earwax -- 'Halogen' and 'Down & Dirty' (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he's mastered his art. The lead track 'Chicken Foot' is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It's a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down 'Shifty'. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Cluekid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge."

RODRIGUES, BENNY: Fake Stab 12" (FIGURE 023EP)
"Rotterdam's Benny Rodrigues is already a well known force in the Dutch techno fraternity. His releases on Be As One and Spinclub have cemented his tough, modern-meets old school take on dancefloor techno as some of the grooviest around. 'Fake Stab,' co-produced with Kapuchon, is a spacy roller that revolves around classic Detroit-influenced stab action, floating on top of a bass heavy and pumping bottom end. Tight, crisp and clearly designed for the floor, its a cool trip full of tricky percussion and immense bass pressure (what else would you expect from Figure!) Taking us back into the realms of the masters, 'Woest' is a real burner. Tough, raw and uncompromising, it's a stomping stab-jack like no other. Reminiscent of a certain Mr Hood's punchy warehouse jams, it's filled with the type of purist techno intensity that makes it totally irresistible in the club and beyond."

SULLY: Reminder/Jackman's Rec 12" (FRJ 005EP)
"Griping about dubstep seems pretty pointless at the moment -- for almost every formulaic record on the shelves, there's another young, creative producer beating a much more interesting path. Norwich's Jack Stevens -- better known as Sully -- is justifiably seen as one of those individuals. Tantalisingly doing the rounds on dub for long enough now, 'Reminder' and 'Jackman's Rec' should usher in Sully's biggest moment yet. Since Blackdown (AKA Martin Clark) included both in his end-of-year dubstep chart for Pitchfork, he and DJ partner Dusk have supported the tunes consistently on Rinse FM and at FWD>>, also featuring 'Jackman's Rec' in their XLR8R magazine podcast. 'Reminder' has subsequently been deployed in sets by Ben UFO, Pangaea and Tomb Crew, the latter including it in their recent contribution to FACT magazine's respected mix series. One of Sully's tricks is that his music never falls into predictable slots. 'Reminder' might be a peak-time, late-summer skanker, but there isn't a clichéd reggae sample in earshot. Instead, it's closer to a translation of pioneering producer Pole's crackly dub abstractions into dancefloor form. 'Jackman's Rec' is a velvety roller that on one level, is the best example so far of how Sully's intuition for swing allows him to nail the dark sensuality of early FWD>> beats. Yet at the same time, it's in no way trapped in nostalgia for that era, simply sounding like the next step for future garage."

TREVOR, RYAN: Introducing: Ryan Trevor LP (DC 419LP)
"Wow...we can't seem to figure out the true story of Ryan Trevor - we're not sure he even knows it! Is he an industry guy who pitched songs to Barry Manilow, wrote songs for Sesame Street, and roadied for infamous germaphobe Robin Trower? Is he a sensitive loner-folker who lived in England and all over the globe? Is he an ex-60's Indiana garage band kid who rocked in 'The Blue Glue?' Or did he simply replace his friend Paul McCartney when he 'died' in 1968? It just might be all of the above, though working closely with Trevor (well, as closely as we can get to New Zealand -- it's about eight thousand miles away) has shed remarkably little light on the man - even his exhaustive autobiography ends in the early 70s, just before he started recording music! The usually in-depth Acid Archives has a mere one sentence listed about the man. Is this a conspiracy? What we do know is that he produced one incredibly rare and homespun pop LP in 1977, Introducing: Ryan Trevor. It may have been merely a demo for a never-materialized Warner Brothers album (though we question the veracity of this claim), or a definitive concept album statement (are there any non-concept albums that begin with an 'Overture')...but we'll let the music speak for itself. A privately-pressed bit of psych-pop perfection, Introducing: Ryan Trevor at last answers the question on ALL of our minds: 'What if R. Stevie Moore and Emitt Rhodes recorded an album with Joe Meek's ghost in the late 70s?' Whatever the case, what you have in your hands is a near-exact repro of an insanely catchy song cycle of Macca-melodies, subverted by copious amounts of phase, fuzz, and a bedroom production ambience that would certainly make Bob Pollard, Ariel Pink or The Godz jealous. Drag City/Galactic Zoo Disk is proud to get this incredible rarity back into circulation, where it can soon after be filed next to your Rundgren and Brian Wilson records in the 'loner genius' section."

VA: Munich Disco Tech Volume 5 12" (GSR 091EP)
"The fifth edition of Great Stuff's EP series Munich Disco Tech again features no artists from Munich or even Germany but still the full flavour of that concept. With Juan Sanchez from Amsterdam, the Canadians Sultan & Ned Shepard (Harem Records/Global Underground), Tignino & Leo from Italy's very south island Sicily (featuring Jim Kerr's son on the mic) remixed by Kling Klong artist Oliver Klein. Plus Denis Horvat from Denmark. A very heterogenous mixture of styles and artists from all over the planet, which rocks in different situations."

YAYS & NAYS: Yays & Nays LP (GROO 021LP)
"Monster rare USA private pressing from 1968, rated with 6 stars in the Hans Pokora 3001 book. The Yays & Nays were a groovy, hip group comprised of three guys and three girls. This is a truly unique sounding album, full of creative songwriting and vocal arrangements and a style that defies any categorization. There's some fab garage folk-rock on it (the opening track 'Gotta Keep Travelling' is really astounding!), and also some tracks in a bizarre crooner-lounge Incredibly Strange Music vein. Reissued for the first time, in collaboration with band members, and with original artwork."

FRANKLIN STARBIRD BAND, LEROY: Star Bird 7" (HLR 001EP)
"In 1981, Leroy Franklin went into the San Antonio studio of Manny Guerra with a group of session musicians to record his 2-sided masterpiece, 'Star Bird.' The A-side, a spiritual, funky slice of modern soul, is reason enough for DJs and collectors to put this 45 in their box. The flip, a spontaneous anti-drug rap over Star Bird's instrumental track is a dancefloor filler. Recorded just over a year after 'Rapper's Delight,' 'Star Bird II' is quite possibly, the first rap record ever recorded in Texas."

RELATIVES, THE: Don't Let Me Fall LP (HLR 001LP)
"Heavy Light Records was founded by Charisse Kelly and Revenant Records alum Noel Waggener to present obscure and previously unreleased recordings spanning the 1950s -- '80s. This release features lavish silk screened packaging, detailed historical notes and unpublished photos. Call it gospel funk! In truth, the sound of The Relatives is so much more. Brought together by veteran gospel singer Gean West in 1971, their sound bridges the gap between traditional gospel, soul and psychedelia. Over a span of four years, The Relatives recorded three obscure 45s and a session with legendary North Texas engineer Phil York. These powerful, genre-busting recordings stand up alongside the best group soul and funk recordings of the 1970s -- and give praise to the Lord like you've never heard before! Heavy Light Records is proud to bring together all of The Relatives' singles and five previously unreleased tracks for their first-ever full length release, Don't Let Me Fall."

OCTA PUSH: Deixa 12" (IBR 004EP)
"Lisbon-based Octa Push are the newest recruits on the Iberian label and here they come up with the goods on this very distinctive international flavoured 3-tracker - following their debut vinyl release on Soul Jazz Records' Stepper's Delight 2 compilation. Having blown up the Red Bull Stage at this year's Sonar in Barcelona and wowed people at Fabric and the Glade Festival with their unique flow; which sees them combine the Portuguese and African sound spliced with elements of UK garage, dancehall and techno. Both 'Deixa' with Toni Clean, resident in Portugal and from the Cabo Verde Isles, and 'Baila Mundo,' with the legendary MC Zulu and his distinctive randomized dance hall cadence, show Octa Push as accomplished producers - having already remixed the likes of Buraka Som Sistema, Debruit, Mochipet and DJ Znobia, to name a few - and skilled at using original vocals over their bass line driving funky beats; whilst 'Dubshh' is a marvelous bustling and punchy instrumental rub perfectly illustrating their bass and groove style. All three tunes are sure players and seem destined to bring the Portuguese style to a growing fan base and providing Iberian with yet another non-UK produced bass continuum vibe."

TEAM BRICK: Alogon CD+DVD (INV 080CD)
"Invada Records are very proud to announce the relase of Team Brick's debut album Alogon. Team Brick is vocalist / multi instrumentalist Matt Williams who has over the past couple of years been quietly making a name for himself in the Bristol music scene, not least his involvement on Portishead's '3rd' album. Along with Geoff Barrow and Billy Fuller, Williams is also a member of Beak. The initial 'limited' pressing includes a bonus DVD of TB supporting Julian Cope on tour a few years ago. If you haven't heard or seen this man play out or heard any of his music, this is a good a place as any to check him out. The man can't be compared to anybody or anything, but if you're a fan of the following artists... John Zorn, Merzbow, Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Steve Reich, Dalek, Cardiacs etc. etc. you may wish to explore what he has to offer with this album."

BROWN, BARRY: Let's Go To The Blues CD (KING 020CD)
"Barry Brown is one of reggae's vastly overlooked talents. His militant conscious style has over time lost none of its appeal. Truly one of the sweetest roots vocalists to come out of Jamaica. Born in 1962, Kingston, Jamaica,he cut his musical teeth working under producer Bunny Lee. Their first release was a track called 'Girl You're Always on my Mind,' although only a minor hit, Bunny Lee saw his potential and he was rewarded with his 1979 cut 'Step it up Youthman' which became a hit and has become a roots classic, leading to an album of the same name. The late '70s was a great period in Barry Brown's career and it's from this period that we have culled this set of tracks. Straight from the master tapes some of his finest moments and some unreleased gems that we believe should be heard. A great set from his timeless 'Trying Youthman' a tail of struggling times in the heart of Kingston Jamaica. His rastafarian inspired chants 'Stop Them Jah Jah,' 'Give Thanx and Praise,' 'Natty Rootsman' and 'Lead Us Jah' work alongside socially charged cuts as 'Politician,' 'Big Big Pollution' and 'Mr Money Man.' As with all his tales and inspired lyrics they are put across in such a tuneful way that like all the best songs that carry a message can be remembered also through the strength of the song. As with many of his artists Bunny Lee encouraged him to go into self-production, and after a time spent with producer Linval Thompson 'Separation,' and Sugar Minott 'Things & Time,' he did just that and produced his first release 'Cool Pon Your Corner' in 1980 followed in 1981 by 'Problems Get You Down.' We hope this release will find a place in your collection and remind us of the talent of Mr Barry Brown. If some-what overlooked, but certainly now not forgotten. Let's celebrate with the man and go to the blues one more time." Includes two extra tracks not on the LP version.

SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER: The Love Quadrant 12" (KGO 002EP)
"Electronic / dubstep label Kinnego Records started by Boxcutter out of Northern Ireland is back! After the success of the first release (by Boxcutter himself) he introduces the masses to a producer named Space Dimension Controller -- the techno funk alias of 19-year-old Jack Hamill. Following on perfectly from Boxcutter and Kinnego Flux's A Familiar Sound on KGO001, it features 2 tracks of deep, loved-up electro. Equally inspired by both the tape warped soundtrack to Garth Merenghi's Darkplace and early Aphex Twin, Jack's all-analogue production gives his tracks a timeless sound that's a mile away from contemporary electro and house. The beats are low slung and funky, and the melodies are addictive and show a natural flair. On 'The Love Quadrant,' a girl / boy vocal exchange sets the scene while the track builds momentum, before the whole thing spaces off on a sweet mini moog solo. On the flip, 'Electropod-250 Collision' has a deep 808 pulse and flanged bass, topped off with Detroit-inspired melodies and blurred out reverbs."

FINE, JASON: Future Thought (Part One) 12" (KM 012.1EP)
"The second full length release from Jason Fine, the master of the melodic bassline, the subtle pads and the delicate live feel drum programming, is out on Kontra-Musik. The dance music producer today can, to categorize, be divided into two types. First we have the producer, and this is the majority - who skillfully manipulate sound to satisfy dance floors and clubs. Then there is the musician - a person who transforms human thought and emotion into music. This is the category that best describes Jason. What comes out of his studio is always something very personal and special. The sounds are old school but the outcome is so much Jason's own, that if feels very fresh and new. On Future Thought, the follow up to the much acclaimed album, Our Music Is A Secret Order -- released on Kontra-Musik in 2008, Jason once again sets his mind to spin, this time towards the future, and out comes electronic music full of human presence. Or as Jason Fine puts it: 'I am constantly thinking about the future, future of technology, humanity and the earth. So this series of tracks is an auditory representation of my future thought.' Amplitude modulation gives you an energetic techno track without losing in melody and funk. Broken home is warm electro brings thought to Claro Intelecto masterpiece Peace of Mind."

MEYER/WAREIKA, MATTHIAS: Infinity/Smiles 12" (LIEBE 029EP)
"Riding the wave of the recent success of tracks like 'Tout Va Bien' and 'Skipper,' Matthias Meyer continues his deep exploration into rolling, uplifting house bombs with 'Infinity.' A classy, hypnotizing vibe is built from the outset, with smooth chords and subtle arrangement tweaks lifting the tension higher as we approach the arrival of a very catchy hook indeed! Teasing and yet fulfilling all the while, this is truly one for those heart-stopping, timeless moments. Meyer once again pulls on our heart strings with an emotionally charged modern house classic. Wareika - 'Smiles': These three deep-afro-house experimentalists are atop a newly cast wave bound for the shores of underground stardom. After their superb debut 'Men Village' on Connaisseur last year, or the recent 'King's Child' on Motivbank, the trio have really built a unique and stand out sound for themselves. 'Smiles' is a typically trippy, wonderfully meandering cut that takes us on a mystic journey through funky jazz licks, smooth piano and synth textures, Arabic undertones and psychedelic waterfalls of richly produced sound. A treat for the ears and for the mind!"

A BOLHA: Um Passo A Frente CD (LION 629CD)
"Brazilian band the Bubbles became the toast of the underground Rio de Janeiro scene, backing Tropicalist singer Gal Costa's residence at the Sucata night club in 1970. They won the 'Best Band of the Festival' award at the VII FIC of 1971 (International Festival of Songs), the same year they appeared on Leno's Vida y obra de Johnny McCartney album. After venturing to England to attend the Isle of Wight Festival, they decided to experiment with a heavier sound, more akin to UK bands of that era (Deep Purple, Cream, King Crimson, Humble Pie, with a little Beatles' White Album in for good measure) than that of their Brazilian cohorts. A name change to A Bolha later, still loaded with verve and swagger, fueled by drugs, they recorded their first album, which has secured a permanent place as one of the best hard psych rock albums to ever emerge from South America. The LP, Um Passo a frente (A step forward), was released in 1973 by the Continental label, in a gatefold cover which was quite luxurious for the era. This masterpiece, now impossibly hard to find as an original, certainly made a name for A Bolha in the pantheon of 1970s Brazilian rock. But success in the early 1970s was not like it had once been in the old Jovem Guarda or Tropicalist days, when bands had weekly TV shows to help them become well-known nationwide -- and eventually, worldwide. In other words, the meager abilities of Continental to promote the album made it a collector's item, not the fate a band would actively seek for their recordings. Luckily, we at Lion Productions are able to present these recordings to the world all over again, with the additional benefit of a 20-page booklet with band history, photos, and comments on the songs by band leader Renato Ledeira. Includes both sides of the band's infamous hard-rocking 1971 single as bonus tracks."

HUNT & TURNER: Magic Landscape CD (LION 630CD)
"Fabulous grooving folk rock sounds with plenty of atmosphere, first released by the much beloved Village Thing label in 1972. Ian Hunt and John Turner first teamed-up in the late summer of 1970, the inevitable collaboration of two of the West Country's most sought-after session musicians. String bassist and guitarist Turner had just left the infamous Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra and Hunt, a wizard guitarist and song writer who was already a 'big-name' on the Bristol scene, was looking for a new vehicle for his talents. Both had been spawned by the legendary Bristol Troubadour Club, which Turner had run for several years, and within months the new duo was picking up fans and followers around the UK and in Europe. This album went straight to number six in the Melody Maker folk charts upon its original release. Years later, Ian Hunt is still making stunning music and is rated amongst the finest guitarists in the land, while John Turner, ever the entertainer and entrepreneur, as well as being in his own words a 'part-time rake and bon viveur,' was until recently one of Britain's most respected BBC radio and television presenters. Crystalline acoustic and electric guitars and delicious vocals, backed with electric and string bass and bongos; imagine if you will British band Magna Carta with a guitarist as skilled as Wizz Jones or John Martyn: acoustic instrumentation and strong songs. Our Lion Productions edition comes with a 16-page booklet printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy, which contains a small dose of band info, album lyrics, histories of the Village Thing and Saydisc labels by co-founder Gef Lucena, as well as a Village Thing label discography."

SUN ALSO RISES, THE: The Sun Also Rises CD (LION 631CD)
"Superb sought-after 1970 British acid folk rarity from the Village Thing label. The Sun Also Rises is another case of a folk/psych duo (we're thinking of Emtidi, whose Saat album we have also reissued) who virtually disappeared in the flesh, once they had left behind a small but fascinating recorded legacy. The sole Sun Also Rises album has been reissued (legally and illegally) on several occasions, a testament to continuing interest in the music contained therein. Who were they? They were Graham and Anne Hemingway from Cardiff, described everywhere as a mystical, magical hippie female and male folk duo, who played guitars, dulcimer, glockenspiel, vibes, bells, kazoo, percussion -- joined throughout by label-mate John Turner (bowed and finger-picked string bass), and Andy Leggett. Their one and only album is very much in the creative style and delivery of the Incredible String Band, with similarities to the work of their contemporaries Dr. Strangely Strange, COB, Comus, Forest and Tir Na Nog, as well as others of the original freak-folk brigade. The results of their efforts were tripped-out, spellbinding, esoteric folk collages -- songs of wizards and dragons, dreams and intentions, love, flickering candlelight, the sweet scent of half-remembered summers, death, jasmine, and suicide. We hope that this album will come as a wonderful surprise for lovers of the Incredible String Band and their ilk, as there were few bands that were able to stray into this much loved and much loathed world of fantasy and folk music, and live to tell the tale.

TETRAGON: Nature CD (LION 632CD)
"An ecology-inspired Krautrock album (1971) from a short-lived group comprised of German school-chums, some of whom had recorded an LP as Trikolon. Tetragon did not conform to any predetermined musical style: they played whatever they pleased, as long as it included groovy Hammond organ and very trippy, flanged wah-wah guitar, in various taut jamming modes that favored jazz/rock fusion à la Miles Davis with a small dose of classical music (adapting a Bach fugue along the way). The result is a bouquet of lush instrumentals, with elements of Egg or the Nice, and quite a bit of T2 to boot. The album was recorded in a converted barn, using a Revox A77 two-track tape recorder and seven microphones placed judiciously to best capture the sound of each instrument. Re-recording wasn't possible, as the record was mixed live. Yet these challenging conditions inspired the band to great heights: Hendrik Schaper played organ and clavinet simultaneously, with one hand on each keyboard; meanwhile, Jürgen Jaehner unleashed rampaging electric guitar solos, then, in an instant, switched to acoustic guitar for the next musical passage; Schaper didn't own a piano, so he used a pre-amp with a wah-wah pedal to imitate that instrument's sound. A virtuoso effort, from start to finish! Tetragon didn't bother contacting any record labels; they didn't think their music would interest anyone. A mere 400 copies of the album were released on a private label, named Soma after the drug-induced effect described in Alduous Huxley's Brave New World. Our edition includes all of the original pro-environment, anti-industrial pollution gatefold album art, a detailed band history, band photos, and a nearly fifteen-minute bonus track, recorded live in Georgsmarienhütte in 1972."

BRAINSTORM: Smile A While CD (LION 633CD)
"With this record from 1972, Brainstorm, led by future Guru Guru stalwart Roland Schaeffer, established themselves as one of Germany's premier bands. Their complex Krautrock, based on strange harmonics (thanks to Schaeffer's enthusiasm for Jimi Hendrix and the free jazz sounds of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders), and impelled by wild and distorted sax, flute and Vox organ, would later put them smack in the middle of that bible for the intrepid musical adventurer, the revolutionary music reference guide known as the Nurse With Wound list. As NWW themselves said, 'Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden -- step out of the space provided.' What better endorsement of Brainstorm could there be? Brainstorm took only fifteen days including mixing (during the tragic 1972 Munich Olympics, as it happens), to record their favorite numbers, all under the direction of a producer little interested in their music. That's a great shame, for these recordings show Brainstorm to be one of the best of the inventive off-beat bands of the era, along with the likes of Moving Gelatine Plates (France), Pazop (Belgium), and of course, Soft Machine and Caravan. Booklet reproduces all original LP gatefold art; liner-notes tell the band's history up to the completion of this album. Includes all the tracks from Smile A While, plus three heavily grooving bonus tracks originally recorded for SWF radio in 1971 as Fashion Pink."

LANGENBERG: Times 12" (MILD 002EP)
"The second chapter in Mild Pitch history reveals the cryptically twinkling gem that is Langenberg's Times, a dark yet sensitive house affair which easily bridges the gap from a rougher 1990s New Jersey kind of feel to the modern takes on house music of today. Filtered stab fragments and deep chordal layers gently slide into each other like watercolour and the shifting frequencies of a sizzling vinyl record contribute to Langenberg's most thrilling work to date. On the flip, Manuel Tur gears up for an atmospheric remix expansion reminiscent of his critically acclaimed 0201 album debut on Freerange. Countless harmonic layers twine around a filtered disco sample, without ever revealing its full sound spectrum while the raw tripping beat keeps stomping relentlessly. Manuel's additional beat-plus-bass dub tool rounds up this intriguing sequel to Ribn's This Feeling, marking another stone in the young mosaic of the Mild Pitch universe."

A convolution of disco, pop and house, propagating one of Leipzig's most promising collaborative developments. Good Guy Mikesh has haunted Leipzig's contemporary underground for a long time. From the beginning of his musical career, his singles (published on Lebensfreude Records and Broque.de) have signified an eclectic mix of pop, soul and disco. Filburt - DJ, record store owner and Leipzig club scene veteran, was consequently Good Guy Mikesh's best possible accomplice in the mission to break fresh ground. This mixture of soul, disco and house-pop is IT, charged by the duo's certain something - an energy sought for not only in this town, but throughout the whole scene. Someone Told Me, their latest single, has been causing an outbreak of contagious enthusiasm in the scene since its release on Permanent Vacation. "Born in Bentonia, Mississippi in 1902, Skip James began recording for Paramount in Grafton, WI, in the 1930s after showcasing his unmistakable talent in a series of auditions in Jackson, Mississippi. Particularly interesting was his three finger picking technique, his high pitched voice and the rural blues tales that he put in music for a sub genre of blues that was later called the 'Bentonia school.' WRUHME, ROBAG: Lampetee 12" (MOVIDA 001EP)
"Movida is Spanish and is the English word for 'moving.' With this first release we have moved something -- nobody else than Mr. Robag Wruhme (Wighnomy Brothers) has produced this first one. This track is really untypical for any production which Gabor ever did, but we liked that 'dubby' track so much that we really wanted to release it. Maybe the one or other will think back to good old Maurizio tracks. 'Lampetee' is a very old Greek 'song' with a pretty nice song-text which Gabor packed in that track with so many emotions. We were also happy as we get the 'o.k.'. from nobody else than Nick Curly to do a remix for us. It has taken a long time, but finally the remix is so lovely, deep and groovy that we think it was good choice to wait so long. NEWMAN, MIC: Sizzled Sally EP 12" (MUR 013EP)
"Sizzled Sally has caused many a storm on dancefloors this summer, an unforgettable treat of a record from the refreshing palette of Mic Newman. Title track 'Sizzled Sally' is the most requested and hyped murmur release to date, the sound of the past meeting the present in an original and winning recipe. Slices of piano and rapturous vocal screams unite in a sharp evocative atmosphere, forming the heart of the track that stays with you long after the lights come up. B side '5 O'Clock' is another late night burner, stocked with an arsenal of funk and fired out with great velocity. Mic Newman spent his formative years on an olive grove in Australia but has turned his attention to studio spaces over the past 5 years, honing the skills that have begun to be seized upon by a string of notable artists, completing remixes for Mason, Chicken Lips, Dirty South, and Booka Shade and solo releases for Get Physical, 8Bit, Dirt Crew and now for our own murmur family. Many believe Mic Newman's swift rise to prominence to be more remarkable than the day it rained small fish in Denmark, but despite his simple past, Mic's musical voice is layered with innovation and quirk, culminating in a radical sound, one that stands out from the clichéd noise. Phrases like 'technical wizard' and 'emphatic attention to detail' resonate in conversations among his contemporaries, referencing Mic's production proficiency and favourable reputation among his peers. Innovative, unquestionably talented and attitudinally sound -- Mic Newman is one wholesome package soon to be distributed worldwide on murmur."

BIG ZIS: Suure Räge Remixes Vol. 2 12" (NM 081EP)
"The Swiss black music label has been broadening its musical spectrum over the past years. Just like the artist BIG ZIS, whose music could most likely be labeled 'electro pop alternative punk rap', they don't care about common conventions. While rap becomes more and more pimped out, house loopier and minimal narrow-minded, Big Zis hooks up with a top-class troupe to get it her own way. For her most recent album Und jetz ... ('And now') she worked with Marton di Katz and Valentino Tomasi (both members of Kalabrese's famous 'Rumpelorchester'), who laid the musical foundations for most of the songs. For the impulsive electro on the track 'Suure Räge' ('Acid Rain') however, BIG ZIS collaborated with the techno producer Michal Ho (Tuningspork) at the studio. 'Suure Räge' got remixed by several well-known producers: Robag Wruhme (Freude am Tanzen) and Canson (GS Zürich) are to be found on volume 1 and the soul brothers Lexx (aka Kawabata / Drumpoet) and Kalabrese (Stattmusik) successfully combat boredom on volume 2. The sound scapes of the remixes couldn't be any more diverse and cover a broad variety of styles."

NGOZI FAMILY: 45,000 Volts LP (NOSMOKE 006LP)
"Stunning, rare as hell album from the rich Zambian 'Zamrock' scene from the '70s -- have you ever heard of this record before? The Ngozi Family (Ngozi means danger, and dangerous is their music indeed!) were also the band backing for Chrissy Tembo on his now well-known My Ancestors album. They released this one in 1977, and you'll be amazed when you hear it if you're somehow into Hendrix, Black Sabbath, heavy psychedelia or Afro psych-rock. Most of the tracks on the LP follow that direction, and the rest enter the Afrobeat sound -- but most of it is fuzzy, heavy psych-rock as you can expect. This release has a surprising high quality sound and is limited to 600 copies only. One of the rarest rock albums of the whole world!!! Get it while you can!!!"

KRYPTIC MINDS: Life Continuum/Wondering Why 12" (OSMUK 007EP)
"Kryptic Minds' first release since their highly anticipated One Of Us album on Loefah's Swamp81 label. Kryptic Minds show they have many strings to their bow in the shape of this killer 2 track 12" on their own Osiris Music UK imprint. 'Life Continuum' shows the guys going in deep with hard synth manipulation, warm pads and haunting choir which glides in and out effortlessly through the mix. Best listened to in a dark room, with a massive sound system, for people who like to feel the bass rattling they're chest! 'Y_Wondering Why' is the yang of the flip, with a different feel altogether, in what only can be described as beautiful! With a skippy half time beat, and the sense of emotion from the off. As soon as the needle hits the edge of the record you know you are in for an emotional six minute journey. With a ghost like female vocal that glides through the track like a hot knife through butter. One for the head phones but also rocks the dance. DJ support: Youngsta, Loefah, Mala, Headhunter, N - Type, Pinch, Distance. Mary Anne Hobbs."

RSD: Corner Dub (Blue & Red Mix) 12" (DRUNK 003EP)
2009 repress, originally released 2007. "Classic heavyweight Bristol steppaz vibes from the original Bristol sound Godfather, Rob Smith (Smith & Mighty, More Rockers). Rob's music has dominated, defined and pioneered the Bristol sound from the early days of post-punk, the trip hop and jungle eras and now into the 21st century with his first dubstep offering in his own unique style. These are two definitive Bristol steppaz rhythms to set the dance skankin'. Both tracks are structured as extended mixes, firstly the rhythm & bass roll out, then the RSD dub versions comes through, delays float off the basslines and ricochet from the snares taking you into the chasm of Bristol dub music. 3rd installment on 'Bristol's best new label' (Kid Kameleon), Punch Drunk. Following in the footsteps of Subtext and Tectonic, Punch Drunk is a new label coming out of the UK's second city of Dubstep, Bristol. Echoing the forward thinking ambitions of London's original Dubstep movement, Punch Drunk's own strain of UK post-junglism draws from the influence of Bristol's history of progressive soundsystem culture, from Blue & Red and Smith & Mighty to Independent Dealers, Protocol, More Rockers and Full Cycle."

ATOM TM: Muster CD (RI 065CD)
"Muster, the German word for both 'example/sample' or 'pattern', welcomes us with an artwork that shows baroque garden ornaments, photographed from orbit. This 50 minute piece of permanently evolving structure and sound is a complex, well-thought and thoroughly crafted composition which is in fact inspired by the phenomenon of the ornament itself. Muster in this sense can be understood as a large, meandering ornamental pattern or rhythmical figure that, most of all, does not refer to, or reproduce any musical structure heard so far. On Muster you won't find melodies, harmonies, words, a message or reference to existing musical styles, since the accent was laid upon the development of the musical particle (one may call it 'atom' :) ) itself: rhythm and its sonic elements, being in permanent flow. At the same time this complex block of sonic information may sound 'orbital' to us - a musical structure as conceived by a being not from this planet: an alien observer. While this work can be considered as a leap forward in atomTM's creation, it may resemble some of his earlier works, such as Schnittstelle, The Disk Orchestra, Bund Deutscher Programmierer or CMYK, just to name a few, while it certainly shows that those works where just a step towards a far larger picture, which atomTM has begun to paint now. Matured as a composer, atomTM may indeed quote himself on this masterpiece, while he stands fairly alone in a vast desert called 'electronic music'."

FRITH, FRED: Nowhere. Sideshow. Thin Air. CD (FRA 007CD)
"Fred's sixth CD of music for dance, featuring three commissions by three different choreographers each sharing, as Fred says ' a certain obsession with melodic deconstruction.' Two of them feature -- and were especially written for -- the remarkable violinist Carla Kihlstedt. Fred and Carla perform one of them (Fred playing a huge array of instruments here as on all pieces), are joined by Fred Guiliano, (samples) and Gail Brand (trombone) on another, while the third features Fred, Hande Erdem (violin) and Threresa Wong (cello). These are complex studio compositions characterised by a deceptive simplicity, layers and plateau, rhythm and colour."

FRITH, FRED: Inpur II CD (RER FRFC2)
"Totally different from Impur I (ReR FRFC1) -- which was a deconstructed, spatialised simultaneity of musical events that could only be heard through open windows or by wandering through rooms -- Impur 2 took the form of an unannounced performance across which audience members had to stumble by chance (and then collect their friends -- or not). Both events formed part of a commission by L'Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villurbanne in May 1996.This recording, painstakingly edited and re-mastered by Fred, appears as a full-on concert by a large 19 strong ensemble with Fred conducting as well as playing. It's built on rhythm, harmony, rock noise, exotic instrumentation, power, complexity and melodic writing -- with intermittent stretches of chaos, eccentricity and theatre, and fits comfortably into the aesthetic of his earlier performing ensemble projects, like Gravity, Skeleton Crew and Keep the Dog."

MOORE, R. STEVIE: Phonography CD (RER RSM1)
"Phonography was Stevie's first LP release, and an out-of-the-blue masterpiece: terminally idiosyncratic but with all the compositional qualities of great pop. A gifted songwriter, R Stevie (son of Bob Moore, Elvis' bassist) grew up and was steeped in Nashville's countrypolitanism; but, as a recidivist rebel, he inevitably slipped into strange byways, following his own, unique path into celebrated obscurity - as this strange and compelling record attests. Hans Arp said, 'My paintings are like fingernails: they keep growing and I keep cutting them off'. R Stevie's songs seem to follow the same rule. They create worlds, tell stories, trifle wantonly with form, harmony, structure and execution, and throw off passages of casual brilliance on the way. Lo-fi is integral to its purpose. You can't pay to get a sound like that. So, when nobody seemed to want to keep Phonography in print, ReR Megacorp were happy to oblige - it's history. We took the opportunity to re-master and restore it to its original form. Instruments used: Red plastic Hagstrom electric guitar, Gibson SG Junior electric guitar, Fender Precision Bass, Yamaha acoustic guitar, Alvarez classical guitar, Premier snare drum, upside-down cardboard box bass drum, various full drum kits, Fischer grand piano, Franz metronome, Maracas, Tambourine, Cry Baby Wah Wah pedal, Jordan Creator sustain pedal, Korg synthesizer, Elka string synthesizer, Magnus chord organ, Realistic frequency equalizer, Maestro phase shifter, Univox echo chamber, hi-hat cymbals, extra cymbal (old), Panasonic cassette player, Koss and Vanco headphones, Fender Twin Reverb and Eenque amplifiers, Cords, Picks, Voice."

PERE UBU: London Texas CD (RER U01)
"A missing piece of the Ubu jigsaw, and a fine memento of a great band, London Texas is a satisfyingly hi-fi live recording of the sadly short-lived line-up that toured briefly between the arrival of Eric Drew Feldman and the departure of Chris Cutler. Certainly it's the best recording of the Scott, Cutler, Maimone rhythm section - though the whole band is on lean-back-intense concert form. Coming back to it, this was the end of a particular era, of a certain kind of band: the songs are economical and tightly arranged but harmonically elaborated -- with strongly performative and musical underpinning (there's a new aesthetic in place now); it's an approach that takes no prisoners. Then there's the bonus of that scary live energy. Studio recordings just can't do this. London Texas stings like a bee -- in a beret. Play it loud. Special mention -- guitarist Jim Jones; mind-bogglingly great. Recorded 1989; transcription and file mastering by David Thomas; edited by Chris Cutler; CD re-mastering by Bob Drake."

SHIT AND SHINE: 229-2299 Girls Against Shit 2LP (REPOSE 022LP)
Gatefold 2LP version, limited to 500 copies. Continuing in their usual Riot Season style, what we have on offer here is the bizarre, the puzzling and the downright groovy. The epic, drawn-out single-riff jams that make up their legendary live shows are replaced by their trademark off-the-wall lunacy, making for a fun-packed adventure akin to biking trips with friends, and the local mental as a child. 229-2299 Girls Against Shit could be the soundtrack to that summer, the beating of rats with sticks, the shooting of girls with gat guns, swimming in the rancid cut and the discovering of dead dogs and maggots. PINK SKULL: Endless Bummer LP (RVNGNL 001LP)
"The dystopian frontier is near, but never fear. In the new era of endlessness where we hide ourselves as humans among androids, there is hope. On Endless Bummer, the second album from Pink Skull, the producer duo of Julian Grefe and Justin Geller rip out the tracking chip and jump the grid on a quest for purity among putridity. Lysergic traces from Pink Skull's electro-fried debut Zeppelin 3 LP reappear on Endless Bummer in ghostly tape delays and trigger hits but this album favors the man-made over the machine. Grefe's vocals, both sung and sampled in harmony, humanize lead off track 'Peter Cushing' and 'Oh, Monorail', while the expanded 'live' Pink Skull line up of drums, bass, and guitar animalize the skittish acid tracks 'Chicken Inside Egg' and 'Gonzo's Cointreu'. Where Bummer mellows slightly, Skull's spirit animal Geller takes tracks like 'Wheet' and 'Fired, So Fired' into outer kosmische territories. The result of this balance parallels the Bummer along the various lines of PIL's Metal Box, The Orb's Pomme Fritz EP, the tropicalia Dada-ism of Tom Ze, and Eno & Cluster. Living / breathing electronic music made beyond the computer screen for bigger screens, Bummer could easily soundtrack a remake of Videodrome as well as it could a Kubrickian classic." Includes newspaper insert. Covers come in blue, red or green, each with a unique "bummer" word letterpressed on the front.

KUTI, FELA: Beasts Of No Nation/Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am 12" (CEL 822EP)
"Fela Anikulapo (Ransome) Kuti's life and career were more than anything an attempt to fuse the worlds of music and politics irrevocably. Kuti spearheaded the new fusion of West African originated 'Afrobeat'---a genre of which he was and is the indisputable leader---with a determined militancy inspired by pan African radicalism and to a lesser extent U.S. black nationalism, and, in the process, made him as many enemies as followers; but always carried by the unfettered musical intuitiveness & improvisation that lent his politically abrasive forthrightness an undeniable mass appeal, transcending well beyond his own specific conditions and appealing on a universal musical scale really unmatched by many musical moguls...a true 'empire' that has transcended Kuti's own death and lives on (perhaps unfortunately) in the form of his kin & idolizers alike. His music, that joyous instrument of social change, was his catalyst & albeit integral vessel for radical agitation. It's not that the countless albums stand on their musical merit alone, the truly free method to the relentless and melodically entrancing reiteration of his own Afrobeat---a music that in itself needs no heady articulation to be enjoyed, and it's basically universal popularity testifies to this. But the very volatility of his music at once elevates the songs into something more than relegated culture. On the contrary, you can still sense the urgency in these records, essential battle tools against colonialism and political apathy, igniters of the great fire of agitation while remaining essential and undeniable landmarks of exceptional musical invention. This exclusive 12" pressing of some of Fela's finest work, the undeniably masterful 'Beasts of No Nation' and 'Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am,' presents a formidable example of Fela's finest work, the best possible examples of his own personal unity of theory & practice that has created over 30 full-length albums & an unshakable legacy that lives on with justifiable necessity."

RIOS, TONI: Past & Present CD (SOAP 001CD)
"One of the long lasting members of Germany's techno and house scene, Toni Rios drops this commemorative full length celebrating his 20 years in the business with a long player of new tracks highlighting his long and illustrious history appropriately entitled Past & Present. From Toni Rios time during the mid-nineties at the legendary Frankfurt club Omen, he grew up quickly at an early age being one of the most in demand DJ's around the globe. Now it's fall 2009 and he's taken the time to reflect on the past two decades spent DJing and producing. With his new full length Past & Present, Toni Rios seizes these years of experience and has successfully found a way to reflect his experiences, influences and moments in this momentous full length. Take the tune 'Can See Your Smile' with it's American tinged house flavor that rolls out in the most charming of ways. 'Ocean Drive' spurs the glory of yesterday's techno sound recalling the best moments of the great G-Man (ex-LFO). The soul of Ron Trent swings unconsciously in the midst of 'White Emotions' while Rios dives into his Spanish roots with the insatiable track 'Incapaz de Parar.' Toni Rios isn't all retro mind you, with 'L.A.D.T', 'A Rosa' and the roller 'Laura' he brings us dead center to today's unclassifiable modern state of creativity where techno and house has converged into a solid groove. An essential document of one of Germany's most beloved and longstanding dance producers."

LOVE: Love Lost CD (SC 11207CD)
"Arthur Lee's seminal work as leader of the '60s band Love is treasured by discerning rock fans around the world. Lee's status as one of his era's preeminent musical cult heroes has grown immensely in recent years, leading to generations of new fans rediscovering the artist's remarkable catalog. Unfortunately, Lee and the band's body of available recordings is relatively small, making Sundazed Music's release of a previously-unheard full-length vintage Arthur Lee and Love album a major musical event. Love Lost was recorded in 1971, during a brief, little-known period during which Love was signed to Columbia Records. Lee and the then-current Love lineup -- bassist Frank Fayad, guitarist Craig Tarwater and drummer Don Poncher -- recorded an album's worth of new material for the label. But after the band left the company, the recordings sat unreleased and unheard until now. The material on Love Lost -- comprised of the unreleased Columbia sessions, plus five unreleased acoustic demos from the same period -- captures Love in a transitional phase, charting the next step in Lee's idiosyncratic musical trajectory, following the lush garage-psychedelia of the classics Da Capo and Forever Changes, and the bluesier direction of the hard-rocking False Start and Out Here. Many of the songs included on Love Lost would resurface, often in radically different form, on subsequent Love releases, and on Lee's fabled solo album Vindicator. But the original versions included on Love Lost boast a playful looseness that's absent from most of Lee's later work, as well as a raw, edgy urgency that underlines his credentials as an early progenitor of punk-rock attitude. Love Lost also features three songs -- 'For a Day,' 'Trippin' & Slippin'' and 'C.F.I. Instrumental' -- that have not previously been released, in any form. With a treasure trove of vintage Love music that has never before been heard by fans, Love Lost is a major addition to Arthur Lee and Love's body of work, and its release is a major event for Lee's fervent fan base."

TRAFFIC: Heaven Is In Your Mind/Mr. Fantasy (Mono Edition) LP (SC 5316LP)
"Traffic was one of the most original and influential British groups of the 1960s, gathering a diverse set of individual talents in vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Steve Winwood, singer/guitarist Dave Mason, drummer Jim Capaldi and reeds player Chris Wood. The foursome's expansive talents and formidable creative chemistry allowed the musicians to integrate an array of folk, jazz, pop and R&B elements, infusing their eclectic stylistic mix with a playfully psychedelic spirit that perfectly captured the experimental sensibility of the times. Traffic's historic 1967 debut LP (produced by noted studio vet Jimmy Miller) was released in the U.K. as Mr. Fantasy, but initially reached U.S. shores in altered form as Heaven Is in Your Mind/Mr. Fantasy. The American edition featured an altered track listing and new cover art with Winwood, Capaldi and Wood but not Mason, who had quit the band prior to the album's release. The U.S. LP added the British singles 'Paper Sun,' 'Hole in My Shoe' and 'Smiling Phases' to the album's running order, along with a short snippet of the U.K. single 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush' as a recurring motif between tracks. The American edition also tacked on the short closing track 'We're a Fade, You Missed This,' which is actually the fadeout of an alternate version of 'Paper Sun.' The American LP's title was quickly amended to Mr. Fantasy, and it was under that name that most stateside fans came to know the album, with the original U.S. edition becoming something of a rarity. In any form, and under any title, Heaven Is in Your Mind/Mr. Fantasy ranks as one of the most audacious and inventive rock albums of its time. Such catchy tunes as 'Paper Sun,' 'Hole in My Shoe' and 'Heaven Is in Your Mind' combine stylistic adventurousness with effortless melodic appeal, while more introspective numbers like 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' and 'Coloured Rain' capture early stirrings of prog-rock and jazz-fusion. Sundazed's new vinyl edition of this seminal vintage disc completely restores the album's rare original U.S. cover art. The LP also features the album's incredibly rare mono mix, which differs substantially from the album's more familiar stereo mix. Pressed on pristine high-definition vinyl, Heaven Is in Your Mind/Mr. Fantasy now looks and sounds better than ever."

BLUES PROJECT, THE: Projections (Mono Edition) LP (SC 5317LP)
"The Blues Project was one of the most innovative and influential bands of the 1960s. Rising from the vibrant Greenwich Village music scene, the New York quintet created a visionary fusion of electric blues, folk-rock, jazz and psychedelia, and delivered it with gritty, effortless expertise. Although the Blues Project didn't stay together long enough to cash in on the musical innovations that they pioneered, they served as an inspiration for subsequent generations of roots-conscious rockers, and the band's small but seminal body of work remains beloved by '60s rock aficionados. 1966's Projections is generally regarded as the Blues Project's peak as a recording unit. The only studio album to feature the band's classic lineup of keyboardist Al Kooper, guitarists Danny Kalb and Steve Katz, bassist Andy Kulberg and drummer Roy Blumenfeld, Projections is a potent manifestation of the Blues Project's eclectic approach and a persuasive showcase for the band members' varied talents. At the time of its release, Projections became a fixture on the emerging underground FM album-rock radio format, and such enduring tracks as the garagey Kooper-sung rocker 'Wake Me, Shake Me,' Kalb's epic blues showcase 'Two Trains Running,' Katz's resonant take on Bob Lind's folk-rock standard 'Cheryl's Going Home' and the spacey instrumental 'Flute Thing,' featuring bassist Kulberg on the title instrument. Sundazed's new vinyl edition of this seminal LP features Projections' rare and unique original mono mix, along with complete original cover art, and is pressed on high-definition vinyl for optimum sound quality."

FEVER TREE: Fever Tree LP (SC 5318LP)
"Fever Tree's lone hit single, the haunting 1968 tribal anthem 'San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native),' perfectly captured the spirit of the psychedelic era. Although their signature hit led many to assume that they were a Bay Area band, Fever Tree actually hailed from Houston, Texas. 'San Francisco Girls' quickly emerged as a staple of American underground FM radio, and won the band an international audience after becoming an airplay favorite of influential British DJ John Peel. 'San Francisco Girls' is also the centerpiece of Fever Tree's self-titled first LP, one of the period's most distinctive debut efforts. As the album demonstrates, the quintet was adept at incorporating jazz and classical influences, ambitious song structures and resourceful production touches. Such memorable numbers as 'The Sun Also Rises' and 'Come with Me (Rainsong)' benefit from Dennis Keller's hypnotic vocals, Michael Knust's dynamic guitar work and Rob Landes' inventive keyboard textures. Also included is a memorable medley of the Beatles' 'Day Tripper' and 'We Can Work It Out,' and a unique interpretation of the Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield nugget 'Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing.' Fever Tree's expansive musical settings also feature key contributions from a pair of noted arrangers: David Angel, renowned for his work on Love's Forever Changes and Gene Page, whose resume includes work with the likes of Phil Spector and Marvin Gaye. Fever Tree would release three more well-received albums, before disbanding at the dawn of the 1970s. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the band's vintage work, and this one-of-a-kind debut album remains a deeply compelling sonic artifact. Sundazed's new vinyl edition of this vintage gem is mastered from the original analog tapes, features complete original cover art and is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl, the better to recapture the original magic of this timeless album."

REAL ESTATE: Real Estate CD (WOODSIST 034CD)
"Real Estate waft in on vibes of hazy summers past. The New Jersey quartet of Martin Courtney IV, Matthew Mondanile III, Etienne Pierre Duguay and Alex Bleeker cut the sleeves short and the pop smooth to shade you from the midday heat. Every song works its way to that part of your consciousness that reveled in the fleeting waves of freedom that eked in once classes broke and the sun lingered a little longer over suburban roofs. And with three quarters of the band holding down Garden State roots it's no surprise that a bit of Jersey indie-pop heritage sneaks its way into their sound, lifting the most sun streaked moments from The Feelies and Yo La Tengo and filtering them through the kaleidoscope of memories aimless drives through parched neighborhood streets. Martin Courtney's songwriting has a way of wrapping up the immediacy of youth with the ennui of age for the perfect shade of bittersweet bliss, mind you though, much heavier on the sweet than the bitter. Add to this Mondanile's (Ducktails/ Predator Vision) shimmering guitar strains full of equal parts sea foam and beer foam, pepper in the boardwalk clatter of Duguay's drums Bleeker's staccato low end and the perfect afternoon is just a lawn chair and boom box away." --Andy French/raven sings the blues

KIKI: Immortal 12" (BPC 205EP)
Kiki's second hit, "Immortal," from his album, Kaiku (BPC 196CD) is remixed and given an instrumental treatment. A reunion with a cellist from Kiki's hometown of Helsinki enhances the instrumental with a wonderful, intensive atmosphere. Kiki's Venice festival encounter with singer and harpist Pirica is likewise fortuitous as she takes "Immortal" to a whole new, hypnotic dimension. Anja Schneider transforms Kiki's original into a modern-sounding hegemonic, DJ-friendly house track.

ESTROE: Elemental Assets CD (CNS 003CD)
This is the debut full-length release by hotly-tipped Rotterdam-based Estroe. The CD consists of tracks produced by Estroe over the span of a few years, in which she spent a lot of time enhancing her production techniques and developing her creativity. As the artist herself explains: "Some tracks were made in rough times, while others were made under happy circumstances, and perhaps you can tell. For me, music is an emotional vent allowing me to express my feelings and freeing me of my restlessness. This makes the album very personal and I am terribly excited to share it with the world and with you." Directly inspired by her recent life experiences and passions, "Flirtatious Concubine" was produced right after a particularly-inspiring booking in Tokyo, and "Inspirited Away" came to life thinking about two producers who really inspired Estroe: Steve Rachmad and John Beltran. Elemental Assets is reflective of her DJ-work -- full of versatile techno with room for deep undercurrents as well as pure dancefloor work. Her style is warm, subtle, but at the same time very energetic. Two guest vocalists, Miss Kittin and Sam Leigh-Brown, also help lift these delicately-crafted tech-house tracks to the next level.

UMBERTO ECHO: Dub The World CD (EB 074CD)
Umberto Echo is a (music) author, professor, expert in (sound) hermeneutics and multi-instrumentalist from Munich. After collaborating as producer, engineer and musician on over 80 albums, ranging from rock to classical & jazz through to reggae; writing Bavarian reggae history along the way with Jahcoustix, Jamaram and Headcornerstone, and producing for a swathe of international reggae vocalists, including Junior Kelly, Luciano and Luton Fyah, Professor Echo finally revealed his true identity by getting on the Dub Train -- his debut album as sound scientist of the digital echo chambers and analog loops. The successor is Dub The World, featuring 15 versions of dub, roots and dancehall tunes from 13 countries, showing him as a sound manipulator whose virtuoso control of mixing desk, software and outboards is equaled only by his mastery of keyboards, guitar, bass and percussion. The album was mixed at top-notch studios in Berlin, Munich and New York, resulting in a clear, wide sound on this journey through hi-fi dub. The opener comes courtesy of the original Germaican Gentlemen with "Dem Gone." The riddim twins Sly & Robbie, performing here with the Polish band Rastasize, are featured, as are the veterans from Steel Pulse in combination with Damian Marley. Another act from the Motherland is Oneness featuring Buju Banton & Naptali, with "Rise Up!" The UK answers with the Stereo MCs and Up, Bustle & Out from Bristol, featuring Kalaf. The vibes from Katchafire (New Zealand) come from furthest afield, followed by the Australians The Red Eyes and Jiang Liang from China. Cultura Profetica represent Puerto Rico, Dub Inc. (F), Dub Spencer & Trance Hill (CH), Smoke (IT) and the Austrians from Dubblestandart (again with Lee "Scratch" Perry) allow Umberto Echo to pump up their Eurodubs, while German band Seeed featuring Cee Lo Green are featured with one of their classic tracks, "Aufstehn." Dub The World is an exclusive dub-set by one of the great, mysterious men in the background, and an outernational dub conference which emphasizes the power of Marley's universal integration message combined with King Tubby's sonic innovation. From roots to futuristic, from jam-rocking to ethnodelic, from Brooklyn to Sydney over Kreuzberg to Kingston and back.

YOUNG, ROLAND P.: Istet Serenade CD (EM 1087CD)
Thirty years since Isophonic Boogie Woogie (EM 1045CD/EM 1045HJ-LP), Em Records proudly presents new music from original underground DJ, horn-master, and producer, Roland P. Young. Istet Serenade is a foray into the area of music space that represents the core of Roland's sound philosophy, "isophonics," the theory of composed improvisation, of stillness in the fluidity of constant change. The thingness of actualized sound in the nothingness of acoustic evaporation and recreation from the source of the in-dwelling presence. This occurs at a speed which defies conscious comprehension, but which reveals abundant revelatory, spiritual aspects. It requires a state of immersion and a freedom to reach toward technical trust and semiconscious execution of the revealed composition. Upon returning to a conscious state, one hears what was created as though it is being presented. The thought then thinks about what was thought and executed as a comprovisation of point, with instantly-mixed and remixed sound devices: breath, posture, devotion, bass clarinet, soprano G and Bb clarinets and saxophone, kalimba, Native American flutes, electronic accoutrements, voice, percussion, Mac Book, family, pen, pencil and the One. As the artist himself explains: "The 10 pieces were chosen from 55 comprovisations created over the past year. My travels to and playing in the atmospheres of Israel, Prague, Rome, London, Paris, Istanbul and Santa Fe, New Mexico, combined with my formative years in Kansas City, Missouri, then my years in the Bay Area of Northern California and my current residence in Brooklyn, New York, inform my music with ever-expanding inspirations and creative possibilities. Istet Serenade is a slice of the possible." This is a sound that is thusly described as spaced acid-drones of intense acoustic chill, embracing electronic, ambient, world, avant garde, cosmic, free and chamber jazz. Deeply engrossing, truly far-out, and emblematic of this groundbreaking composer's commitment to his vision and experience of sound as a physical and spiritual process.

SCHIBBINZ: Livin' Free CD (GUESS 028CD)
Previously released on vinyl, now available in a CD version. In 1967, a bunch of U.S. and Argentinean kids recorded a magical album which has remained unknown for many years due to its extreme rarity, with less than a handful of copies known to exist. Released in 1968 in Argentina by Phonexa, the Schibbinz album could be regarded as the ultimate teen garage folk-rock album, ever. An album of fragile beauty, full of teen charm, innocent vocals, jangly guitars, charming, lo-fi sound and a lost-in-time atmosphere. Guerssen Records is proud to present this mega-rare album to the world, with the production fully benefitting from the band's involvement and assistance. The original master tapes were lost, but the sound has been carefully-remastered from an original near-mint copy. Extensive, detailed liner-notes and lots of cool pictures from the band's archives are all included in a 4-page insert. Also includes 3 unreleased bonus tracks not available on the vinyl version.

NOWIK, WILLIAM: Pan Symphony In E Minor CD (GUESS 029CD)
Previously released on vinyl by Guerssen Records, now available on CD. One of the newest and most surprising discoveries in the '60s & '70s rock rarities field, William Nowik's Pan Symphony In E Minor caused a big hype among collectors. Certainly easy to understand, as it's an ace album no one had heard of before. Guitarist William Nowik recorded this obscure instrumental record back in 1974 somewhere in New York. It has such a deep feeling, and is nothing anyone could have done without really loving it aside of any commercial view. Psychedelic, progressive, very early Floyd-sounding at times, Crimson-esque, and a kind of sound that reminds of the early '70s British underground but with an experimental, trippy touch. Fourteen tracks in total, but played like suites. Seems only 200 copies were pressed and never distributed, so it needed 35 years to be discovered! This wonderful reissue comes with the intended original artwork (it came out in a green and black cover instead of the black and white that William wanted), has nice remastered sound and includes a booklet with rare, unseen photos and extended liner-notes.

DELANO & ALEJANDRO SAB, ALEXI: Slipping Through The Cracks EP 12" (PLUS 8108EP)
Alexi Delano and Alejandro Sab's Slipping Through The Cracks EP is a collection of warm, effervescent techno dominated by phat, subsonic bass lines and effects-driven micro-melodies. "Back To One" features a cyclical reverse-scrape spanning the speakers, while the hookline sneaks into the brain. The gradual build-up leads to incremental reverb, wooden percussion, and buzzing synth FX. A strong centrifugal rush dominates the middle section which then briefly slips its skin before regrouping for the lead-out. Sustained tension with zero drama.

ALEPH-1: Aleph-1 2x12" (R-N 087LP)
2x12" release. Originally released in 2007; a co-release with iDEAL Recordings, Aleph-1 is a project by German sound-sculptor, Carsten Nicolai aka Alva Noto/Noto. Aside from his sound works under those pseudonyms, Aleph-1 is electronic music with an acoustic sound aesthetic that was especially developed for the iDEAL Recordings label. The concept of Aleph-1 derives from the theories of the mathematician Georg Cantor, who was teaching in Halle, Germany, a city to which Nicolai is deeply connected with through his family. The sound pieces of Aleph-1 deal with the idea of infinity in terms of structure and length. Without actual beginning or end, they fade in and out. The pieces have a very logically-constructed nature of overlapping tracks, which never seem to be the same, thus could be extended into infinity. The album consists of eight rhythmic circles, based upon acoustic material, at first sight very minimal but always carrying pulse and melody. Music you can lose yourself in. For a deeper knowledge of the term "Aleph-1," here's a short definition: in 1884, the term "Aleph-1" was introduced by Georg Cantor into the mathematical world. Since then, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, combined with a number, has been used to represent the cardinality (or size) of infinite sets. The Aleph numbers differ from infinity, commonly found in algebra and calculus. Alephs measure the sizes of sets; infinity on the other hand, is commonly defined as an extreme limit of the real number line, or an external point of the extended real number line. While some Alephs are larger than others, infinity is just infinity.

This sweet soul-inspired double-header harks back to Panama in the late-'60s, a time when musicians fearlessly combined styles that reflected their multicultural environment. Both tracks were originally served up on a super-limited 45 on Segraves Records in 1969 and highlight the massive influence of American soul music on musica Panameña during and after the black power cultural movement in the U.S. A reference to the early work of James Brown may seem a tad lazy, but it's accurate.

In March of 2009, Baraclough released their debut album Hello Animal on Forris, their audio publishing cooperative. Members of Baraclough include: Paul de Casparis, Dale Cornish, and Eddie Nuttall.

DEWALTA: Nightshade EP 12" (VA 031EP)
Dewalta aka David Koch returns to Vakant with more popping, earnest house. "Move Yo" sits as close to late 1990s Baby Ford as one can get without a time machine and a personal guide to London's underground. "Nightshade" keeps the house-y goosebumps going with a drier and more direct approach. Cheeky bleeps and chunky bass balance dark, space-y vocals. "Angels Trumpet" features melodic elements that push and pull you in multiple directions, resulting in dancefloor catharsis.

KEZ YM: Butterfly EP 12" (YORE 020EP)
Tokyo's Kez YM opts for a more pronounced party vibe during Butterfly's four deep house tracks, aided by producer Kazuki Yamaguchi. "Inner City Funk" grooves for five blissful minutes, bolstered by a crisp snare, a funky electric guitar, and a synth melody. "Bridge To Bridge" adds a disco-house pulse to a sleepy male vocal, and "Low Tide" chills the pace. The title cut grooves most powerfully, merging a rambunctious drum attack with a driving bass line and manic electric guitar.

GOBLIN: Il Fantastico Viaggio Del Bagarozzo Mark LP (AMS 012LP)
"Another non-soundtrack album, Il Fantastico Viaggio Del Bagarozzo Mark, from 1978, was the only Goblin album entirely sung (in Italian), the others being instrumental only; it is a concept album about the 'fantastic journey of Mark, the cockroach.' This may sound quite funny and weird, but Il Fantastico Viaggio simply is a great prog album, surely the most symphonic of the Goblin production, it alternates the usual gloomy and scary Goblin sound with some nice acoustic interludes. Goblin also played some live dates to promote the LP, a rather strange thing for a group who didn't have a strong live activity at all! Never reissued on vinyl before, great sounding 180g high quality vinyl!"

GOBLIN: Roller LP (AMS 017LP)
"Roller was the second record for Goblin, originally released in 1976, just after the successful score of Profondo Rosso, and is one of the very few Goblin records that was not intended to be a soundtrack. By many considered their best effort, in Roller the band develops their dark, hypnotic and totally instrumental sound, but with an always vivacious and dynamic edge. The record also features new members Agostino Marangolo (from Flea) and Massimo Guarini. 180 gram vinyl."

SUN RA & HIS MYTH SCIENCE SOLAR ARKESTRA: Antique Blacks CD (ARTYARD 010CD)
"Another much sought after and long unavailable title recorded in 1974 with a smallish ensemble consisting (probably) of stalwarts Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, Danny David, James Jacson, Akh Tal Ebah, Clifford Jarvis, Artakatune, and a new electric guitarist, Sly, and released on Saturn in the same year. This sounds like a studio recording and carefully thought out - most of the compositions appear only on this record (apart from versions of 'Nature's God' and 'Space Is The Place'), and include a chain of very interesting accompanied /interpolated) spoken texts: 'There is a Change in the Air,' 'The Antique Blacks,' 'The ridiculous 'I' and the Cosmos 'Me'' as well as a very long and scary coda to 'Space is the Place.' Ra plays Rocksichord and Moog throughout (solo on track 7 and at the end of track 8). Theatrical and political; a fascinating release."

"Kraftwerk have digitally remastered their Kling Klang masters with the latest studio technology -- these magnificent recordings sound like nothing else in the history of music. Limited edition, European-pressed, heavyweight vinyl LPs featuring large format booklets. An epic ode to the joys of highway travel, Autobahn wraps a mesmerizing beat around a sampled collage of car horns, engine noise, whirring tires and radio crackle so infectious that US pop press at the time declared that Kraftwerk's music does for driving what the Beach Boys had done for surfing! The impact of this album is so strong that Spin magazine included it in their list of the 15 most influential albums not recorded by 'The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elvis or the Rolling Stones.'"

APSE: Climb Up CD (ATPR 034CD)
"The record is a major departure from the band's most notable predecessor, Spirit - which was completed 4 years prior. Where Spirit explored a dark world of reverberant guitars, ambient passages, and minimal, haunting vocals, Climb Up proves a bold step out of that darkness. The intricacies of this new world are depicted as if staggering from the world of Spirit into a very different, more illuminated place. Not to mention its packed with more grooves, a greater use of electronics, a range of instruments both modern and classical and -- notably -- a much stronger emphasis on voices and melodies. Climb Up is dense, innovative, cinematic. Apse draw from a colourful palette of different genres, techniques, instruments and approaches - and with that have made what is likely to be one of the most curious, and probably largely unexpected albums of the year. Listen, and be immersed."

SUN OF GREECE: Sun Of Greece LP (BSR 002LP)
"Sun Of Greece is one of the best kept secrets of the early '70s Greek psychedelic era. Their music is perfectly comparable with Socrates and Four Levels Of Existence, with excellent hard psychedelic progressive sound, great fuzz guitars and Hammond organ. The band was formed in Germany by three Greek expatriates and one German in 1972. Original Greek lyrics were written during military service under dictatorship in the early '70s. After the fall of the military junta, the band returned to Greece and released privately one of the rarest Greek singles ever, the holy grail for collectors of '70s Greek psychedelic progressive music. At the same time, they recorded several other songs, which were supposed to become their first album, but remained totally unreleased until today. This compilation presents for the first time ever these songs and their rare single, i.e. everything that has been recorded by Sun Of Greece between 1972 and 1975, 9 tracks in total. 500 limited deluxe hand numbered edition, 180g vinyl, heavy gatefold cover and insert with group history and photos."

TRIBE: Rebirth CD (CMP 007CD)
The Tribe: Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave, Doug Hammond. "Pioneering techno DJ and Grammy-nominated producer Carl Craig has long been weaving a jazz thread through the fabric of his music, including the mid-1990s Innerzone Orchestra and his work as a co-producer on 2003's creatively daring Detroit Experiment that brought together jazz, Motown, hip-hop and electronic musicians. Marcus Belgrave worked on the project along with several other stellar jazz musicians. Belgrave's 'Space Odyssey,' from his Gemini II Tribe release was included on The Detroit Experiment, and Belgrave continued to perform with Craig at concert dates. Belgrave introduced Wendell Harrison to Carl as a result of tour scheduling conflicts that proved to be a fruitful circumstance. The reedman brought his clarinet and wowed Craig and the audience with his nonstop, balls-out blowing. Craig dubbed Harrison's clarinet 'The Charmer.' The concert was recorded and then released as an EP called Paris Live. The Paris concert was the seed that sprouted into a full-blown Tribe revival. Craig gathered Harrison, Fhil Ranelin, Belgrave and Doug Hammond -- McKinney passed away in 2001 -- together in the studio to record new material and remakes of some of their classic works. Musicians old and young came together on the sessions. Guitarist John Arnold, drummers Karriem Riggins and Gayelynn McKinney (Harold's daughter), bassists Ralphe Armstrong, Damon Warmack and Pathe Jassi, keyboardists Kelvin Sholar, Amp Fiddler, Pamela Wise and vocalist Joan Belgrave were all in the mix for this great revival of Tribe. Carl Craig brings a central focus to Tribe as a producer. Tribe in its original birth was created as an umbrella for there collective different projects. Carl's reuniting of Tribe sparked more of a personal interest of his to shape the members as an entity."

DESPER, BOB: New Sounds LP + 7" (DRR 007LP)
"If you haven't heard Bob Desper's New Sounds yet, you may have heard something about it. Originally recorded in 1974, New Sounds is considered to be one of the Pacific Northwest's best-kept secrets, a regional Holy Grail with copies fetching upwards of $1000. Until recently, not much was known about this mysterious blind folk-singer from Oregon. In 2007, Discourage Records located Bob Desper, alive and well, living in Albany, Oregon. After two years of culling materials, Discourage Records is proud and honored to officially reissue this once lost masterpiece. Evoking the melancholy mood of Nick Drake, the fluid improvisation of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, and the intricate instrumentation of Jose Gonzales, New Sounds dark, meditative urgency immediately transcends the thirty-five years marking its original release. This official reissue of New Sounds includes Bob Desper's 1972 debut 7", Dry Up Those Tears (including picture sleeve); an 11 x 17 insert with extensive liner notes and full color photos; and 1970s style tip-on sleeve."

DAVIS, MILES: Miles Davis Quartet LP (DOX 803LP)
"This album is composed of three different sessions. The first session (Side A) was recorded at WOR Studios in NYC in May of 1953 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, John Lewis on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Max Roach on drums, while the second session (all of side B, except for 'I'll Remember April') was recorded at NYC's Beltone studios in March 1954 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. 'I'll Remember April' was recorded on a third session the following month at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Dave Schildkraut on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. All three sessions hail from Davis' 'Prestige period' which stretched from 1951-1955 and during which time Davis had developed an addiction to heroin. However, according to some sources it was precisely between the recording of the first two sessions that appear here that Davis went back home to St. Louis to get clean. He was largely successful, and so this album marks a major turning point in Davis' career."

This album actually has nothing to do with that later period, but it is a still a very good representation of an early Miles at his best, forging ahead with his own cool bop style. This sextet features Davis on trumpet, a young Jackie McLean on alto sax (his debut recording), Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Walter Bishop Jr. on piano, Tommy Potter or Charles Mingus on bass and Art Blakey on drums."

COLTRANE, JOHN: Art Blakey's Big Band And Quintet LP (DOX 805LP)
"Recorded in NYC in 1957 and originally released on the small Bethlehem Records, this LP contains 2 amazing sessions: Session B (tracks A1, A2 ? B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5, 'Oasis,' previously unreleased on LP) features a 15-piece big band led by Art Blakey who was in transition with his Jazz Messengers at the time. The band he has put together for this session explores some wilder numbers, like Melba Liston's 'Late Date,' which would not have been out of place with the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra (the horn players are all Gillespie graduates), along with some more conservative material, such as Jerry Valentine's 'Midriff' (which is a nod to Count Basie's post-war orchestra), giving us an interesting look at how Coltrane handles himself playing in this unusual environment. Session C (A3, A4) is also a rare glimpse at a young John Coltrane, this time playing his own music in a quintet format (led by Art Blakey and also featuring Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop, Jr., and Wendell Marshall). Coltrane's highly-praised 'Pristine' would not have been out of place on his landmark Blue Train album."

Not so much crossing boundaries as erasing them completely, coupling pulsating kick drums, with dreamy melodies, the Dukes meld song-writing sensibilities with an ability to turn a dancefloor upside down. Throw down your preconceptions and discard your notions of the sounds of a fabric main room - this is the Filthy Dukes, and this is how they Kill 'Em All. The mix ducks and dives through styles and sounds without a moment's respite -- setting the pace from the off with their own gloriously synth-laden stomper 'This Rhythm', they move through 'Beat The Clock' by the legendary Sparks, Aeroplane's disgustingly brilliant Italo remix of Sebastian Tellier -- straight out the book of Daft Punk, and even manage to drift in and out of Aphex Twin's classic 'Windowlicker' before the close."

BOSCO, ROBERTO: D 12" (FIGSPC D)
"The respected Italian producer Roberto Bosco pushes the blurry boundaries of club techno with this edgy, agile and highly functional 4-tracker on Figure SPC. Letting the games begin straight away with 'One,' a bass-loaded pumping groove leads the action as we step into a cavernous hall resonating with classic techno hypnotism. Careful arrangement tweaks, jacking, sharp percussion and knee-trembling sub-frequencies are all present in this well-defined peak time treat for the floor. The twisting, freaking opening bars of 'Circle Dub' quickly evolve into a strange but beautiful beast, utilizing Bosco's trademark solid drum array, but also a drifting, dubbed out scattering of synth lines, taking the focus from our heads to our hearts."

UNTOLD: Stop What Your Doing (James Blake Remix) 10" (HEK 006EP)
"Hessle Audio co-owner Pangaea and 2009 newcomer James Blake deliver two wildly different but utterly sick remixes on a double A-sided 10". Side a. Untold - 'Stop What You're Doing (James Blake Remix)': James Blake proves why he's one of the most exciting and promising new prospects in UK bass music right now. Taking the bare bones of the Untold original and creating a completely new lick, Blake throws in p-funk synths alongside chipmunk gospel vocals that relentlessly swell to an apocalyptic climax. 'The most utterly next level piece of music I've heard in years.' Ben UFO (Hessle Audio). Side aa. Untold ? 'I Can't Stop This Feeling (Pangaea Remix)': The Hessle Audio co-owner comes with his hypest, rudest most surprising tune to date. A 140bpm, Chicago-style jackin' remix of Untold's Hessle Audio release from earlier this year. Raw house stabs, those trademark swung drums and a breakdown that's a lesson in tension and release --the mix just rules the dancefloor. Huge support worldwide from Joe Nice, Mark Pritchard, Bok Bok, Gilles Peterson, Ben UFO, Ramadanman and many more."

SQUILLACE & LUCA BACHETTI, DAVIDE: West Side Story/Around The Bay 12" (HO 001EP)
"Now that Davide Squillace's 10 release project Minisketch has been completed, Davide Squillace keeps moving in interesting directions. The next project is called Hideout; here's the first release on the label. Besides Davide Squillace himself, artist that will be participating in the label project include Audiofly, Dubfire, doP, Paul Ritch, Matthias Kaden, Luca Bacchetti, and some even bigger names to come. Like the above, Davide is no stranger to the international dance music circuit. The studied audio engineer is one of the most successful Neapolitan techno DJs worldwide. Also known by his other imprints Sketch and Titbit, and releases on renowned labels like Josh Wink's Ovum, the German label Resopal and Alex Under's CMYK, Davide is part of Circo Loco Ibiza crew, rocking the island with a residency at DC10. Lucca Bacchetti is known for his varied style, from squeaking, jerky minimal to wide-open, percussive techno, to hypnotic, lights-out tracky house. Luca's expertly-produced music has earned him a reputation for producing nothing but quality, dancefloor-devastating tracks. That status was cemented when Beatport nominated him as one the 'Best Artists' in its inaugural BMA 2008. Remixes and original work requests gave Luca Bachetti an international profile: he's remixed and produced for labels like Wagon Repair, Ovum, SCI+TEC, Minisketch, Saw Recordings, Viva Music, Tommy Boy, Meerestief and loads more."

KING MIDAS SOUND: Waiting For You CD (HDB 003CD)
"After two singles on Hyperdub, and a release on Soul Jazz, King Midas Sound's Waiting For You is the debut album from Roger Robinson and Kevin Martin's new group. In previous collaborations, Roger performed as a highly respected poet, but when he opened his mouth to sing in a fragile falsetto, everything changed and King Midas Sound was born. The signature intensity of their previous solo projects remains, but the mood and feeling is radically different. As opposed to Roger's spoken word pronouncements and The Bug's fierce battleground dancehall, King Midas Sound is more like an opiated after-math."

DARKSTAR: Aidy's Girl Is A Computer 12" (HDB 028EP)
"Darkstar's last single on Hyperdub, 'Need You,' released early in the summer of 2008, was Pitchfork's # 1 dubstep single of the year, and turned many towards their developing melancholic sound. Championed by Radiohead, they recently returned the nod of appreciation by recording a version of 'Videotape' for Mary Anne Hobbs' new Planet Mu collection, Wild Angels. On 'Aidy's Girl...', the duo confidently define and refine their catchy melodic sound with a song that's perfectly pop, while at the same time possessed of strange and intriguing bittersweet machine soul. Over at the other side, Detroit teenage wunderkind and Omar S protege Kyle Hall recalibrates the original into a blissful robotic Motor City house opus on his Oats B So Good remix, with a massaging bass line that sounds like sunshine on melting wax."

WHINES, THE: Insane OK 7" (JFHI 001EP)
"Upstart label Just For the Hell of It Records (based on one of the greatest films of all time, seriously) has unleashed the debut 4-song 7" EP with their mind-numbing VU-inspired twang and throb that just can't be denied. As a shambolic three-piece with Messthetically-pleasing loose ends sticking out from all sides, The Whines have that careless candor in their songs that proves to be that magical touch that so many other bands lack in their recordings. One of the many trappings most minimalist female-fronted modern bands get stuck with is the all-encompassing Kleenex/Liliput comparison, and despite being partially accurate on quite a few instances, it really can be chalked up to lazy journalism. The Whines effectively break free of this typical reference point, and have emerged with this debut 7" full of atypical song styles ranging from the distilled Velvet Underground ambiance on the title track, to the impeccably addictive innocent toe-curling guitar tones on 'Indian Homewrecker,' and pull it all together with a refreshing nonchalance that reiterates the serious potential this band has going."

TALK NORMAL: Secret Cog 12" (JFHI 002EP)
"On this five-song E.P., Brooklyn-based duo Talk Normal -- drummer Andrya Ambro and guitarist Sarah Register -- create a nice racket that does a deft job of splitting the difference between harsh sonics and the essential song-oriented structures required of noise rock. Neither a band in which noise is merely a bi-product of a savage attack nor an overtly experimental outfit steeped in this or that high concept, Talk Normal come off as an organic self-contained unit that extracts as much as they can from their explicitly minimal approach. Sure, there are some obvious touchstones here -- Sonic Youth, Magik Markers, Ut, Teenage Jesus -- but the songs never feel derivative. Though various sorts of processed sounds work their way in and out of the picture, the band's aesthetic is built on a basic foundation of guitars, drums and vocals. The duo are clearly working within a dark, neo-now wave framework, yet there's some variety, too. They can sound both hyper and dirgey, calling to mind heat-soaked basement shows and cold moldy practice spaces alike. 'Grinnin in Your Face' opens the album and establishes the Talk Normal template, squiggling moans of feedback, a simple lurching riff, and a dual vocal attack all buoyed by frenetic drumming. 'Eureka' then uses a Branca-style guitarscape as foundation for a sing-speak vocal monologue direct from early 80s downtown NYC. 'Lemonade' rides a catchy little groove early on, and then builds to a drum-guitar/freak-out zenith. Perhaps the most curious aspect of these tracks, however, is that despite whatever stabs of sound punctuate the atmosphere, or whatever structural shifts might occur, theres always a simple, repetitive pulse present, not so much an anchor as a telltale heart of suppressed aggression. Even on the set's most distinctive track, the stark finale 'Rest With Me,' there's a tension lurking, played out via a subtle, yet insidious throb. Talk Normal are making their music amidst an increasingly cluttered underground landscape, and the duos seeming intrepidness in the face of that fact shines through. They've cultivated their own voice that, when combined with that strange festering energy, should make for solid stuff with each successive release." - Nate Knaebel/Dusted.

DRAGON TURTLE: Almanac CD (LSE 015CD)
"Dragon Turtle's Almanac is a heavy trip; a document of transformation, entropy, and causality. Dragon Turtle evokes Morricone landscapes as if painted by Glenn Branca, where dream atmospheres meet brutal realities of nature and relationships. These forces are both beautiful ('Causality', 'Belt of Venus') and destructive ('Moon Fallout', 'Burn the Leaves'). The textures and layers move with a sense of urgency and purpose ('Hometime', 'Hourglass'). The duality of Tom Asselin and Brian Lightbody's musical relationship is also at play, converging an influence of sound spanning from John Cale and Eno to Post-Punk conglomerates of Folk and Kraut Rock. Late night sessions took place into the dawn during the height of dark transformation: post 9/11 America. The recordings began with an M Box and 3 mics in Asselin's Pocono Mountain basement, and over the course of time, acquisition of gear, and massive trial-and-error, the bunker blossomed into One Forest Studio. An empty roller rink was used as a reverb chamber while sampling Brahms' Requiem Mass. Musical recruits were brought in to flesh out ideas with distinct instruments which were effected, layered, chopped, and collaged together."

ETTINGER & THE HEAT, DYLAN: Smokin' 7" (NNF 177EP)
"We had heard a couple cassette outings by this Bloomington young-bloomer over the last 4-6 months and each one hit us better than the last but nothing had prepped us for Ettinger's most recent evolution into neon skyline chase scene soundtracker and that's part of what makes it so amazing. For Smokin' he wrangled together a small posse of close comrades (enter The Heat) and tracked a sick session of smoky synth themes, Corvette noir moods, echo dystopia, faded voices, and sleazy Miami sax. The A, 'Smokin,'' is the more ballad-y of the pair, sad and smooth, just fired-from-the-force, midnight cruising on the strip, no one to call. The B, 'Miami Heat (The Stakeout),' amps the tension, camera zooming in over palm trees and blue-lit swimming pools, a deco mansion on the coast, the place is surrounded, the heat is on, all that. A cool sleaze-psych vision, sickly executed, by a rad fresh energy from the underground. Fingers are crossed there's more where this came from. Black-vinyl 7 inches, plus a photocopied insert, in full-color sleeves with art by NNF. Edition of 380."

SEX WORKER: The Labor Of Love LP (NNF 178LP)
"Still waters run deep but wild waters run deeper. Both when fronting San Fran free-punk body-music trio Mi Ami or performing angst-dance psycho-dramas under his solo alias, Sex Worker, Daniel Martin-McCormick always succeeds in generating total motion (and emotion) and breaking the fourth wall. His vision of tranced/anguished rhythm questing hits an apex on The Labor Of Love, his LP debut under the Sex Worker guise, and we've been soaking in its dark arts for months. Pulsing, lo-fi kraut electronics bubble and sputter under hazy arcs of weirdo vocal smear. Escapist disco drum machines cruise into the horizon under a canopy of dubby accents and FX percussion, sometimes peaking in harsh frenzies of echo-scream meltdowns. All three pieces function as anthems or elegies or protest songs articulating Daniel's heavy anti-sex trafficking/enslaved bodies activist agenda but you don't have to know the depths of the ethical framework to grasp the vibe. An intensely unique and hyper-personal statement from one of our favorite West Coast music-dreamers. Black vinyl LPs in jackets designed by the artist. Edition of 450."

GOLDEN RING, THE: Iranian 60's Styled Garage And Other Exotic Sounds CD (PSR 001CD)
"As collectors continue to explore and discover new music from around the world, one country that's starting to gain momentum is Iran. Iran has been a mystery to collectors for many years, and even today it remains a blackbox to most. Within the rubbles of Iran's lost musical history comes Golden Ring, one of the first, and most prominent Iranian garage groups from the '60s. Based in Tehran, Golden Ring recorded and released a series of songs on 7" during the late '60s and early '70s before disbanding. They were one of the first Iranian bands to be influenced by Western music such as The Beatles, combining traditional Iranian instrumentation and melodies with structures found in the UK and North American rock and pop. This combination resulted in an Iranian take on garage music during the genre's climax. One of the members of Golden Ring, Arif, later went on to become a solo artist, and over time became one of the legendary artists within Iran's musical landscape. His solo material spread across 45's, soundtracks and generations of fans. Sadly Golden Ring never recorded or released a full length album, but through a lot of hard work and effort we are pleased to offer a full length compilation of Golden Ring's music for you to enjoy. MEHRPOUYA, ABBASS: African Jumbo CD (PSR 002CD)
"Abbass Mehrpouya was one of Iran's top sitarists before passing in 1993. Having released a series of 7" singles that range from psychedelic, pop and even heavy funk, collectors are pushing one another aside in an attempt to obtain his legendary work. While his psychedelic guitars and flutes have collectors drooling at the mouth, his heavy funk moments can be heard rocking dance floors in clubs across the world. This album, his sole LP release African Jumbo, is both the rarest, and most in demand album from Iran, dated sometime in the mid '70s. The 11+ minute track 'African Jumbo' is not only a masterpiece of psychedelic funk, but is also only available on this sole and impossibly hard to find album. A simply wonderful experience full of beautiful sitars and flutes, while heavy drums, horns and percussion help fill out the wonderful melodies. Mehrpouya's talents weren't limited to traditional instruments either. He was known to have invented original instruments from bones and other natural materials, while using pots as a replacement for drums. Truly a magical album from a legendary artist within Iran's musical history, and one that is near impossible to source as an original. A true holy grail of Iranian music for both its rarity and content, this release is enriched with a bonus track, taken from a rare cassette."

The EP got full support in the penitentiary from the likes of Slick Rick, Lil' Kim and a whole lot of bitches 'n hoes allegedly connected with the Wu-Tang. Watch your back -- The L Train is comin'!"

NECKS, THE: Silverwater CD (RER NECKS9)
"Their first studio CD for three years - named after an industrial suburb in Sydney ? famous mainly for its correctional facility - Silverwater ranges further and wider than the Necks' former releases, exploring a more sectional structure that counterposes extremes and contrasts, and possesses a greater sense of forward motion than we are accustomed to with this most economical of bands -- though it still retains the long, hypnotic single-track iterative form for which they have been praised. Layers and skeins of overdubs and shifting textures give way to almost empty stretches as the piece evolves, and there is much play with asynchronous time. Paradoxically, for a band renowned for its slow, cycling, repetitions, the Necks show again that they are a band who try constantly not to repeat themselves."

ELEMENTAL: Messages From The Void 2CD (RUNTIME 001CD)
"Elemental's debut LP Messages From The Void is a collection of work from the last four years, spanning a range of styles, made using a combination of new and old technologies, including Elemental's beloved modular synthesizer. He is proud to be able to present it to the world -- a favour returned for all of the amazing music that has touched him throughout his years as a music listener and raver. Elemental's fresh take on the dubstep sound has got both scene stalwarts and eclectic tastemakers singing his praises. Blending components of acid house, Detroit techno, 'golden age' drum & bass, vintage dubwise and African rhythm, his sound is rich in texture and musical heritage, yet remains eminently danceable. The North London based producer -- Adam Wilson to his friends -- started dabbling with production in 1994 with a Roland D5 and Atari ST while he was still at school. Soon after he invested in an Akai S2000 sampler, bought a PC, and the rest, as they say, is history. In the nineties he predominantly focused on making drum and bass and experimental electronica, eventually putting out his first drum and bass release as a white label off his own back. A few years later, together with schoolmate Dario Swade, they formed the breakbeat garage duo Elemental & 3D, releasing on their own label Runtime Records in 2002. A couple of years later after some time abroad, Elemental caught the likes of Search & Destroy on Rinse FM and instantly found the sound he had been looking for: dark, heavy, syncopated beats and bass. Since 2004, Elemental has been focused on bringing his newly developed sound to the masses. Combining dubbed out dirty bass lines with hypnotising rhythms, he has released on labels such as Destructive, Hotflush, Pitch Black, Halo Beats, and his own imprint Runtime, with his seminal track 'Soulfire' one of the highlights on Tayo's Fabriclive mix CD. He was officially the first person to do a live dubstep performance, mixing up and dubbing components of his productions using Ableton Live to rapturous audiences across the world: no set is ever the same twice."

PANTS, JAMES: Seven Seals CD (STH 2218CD)
"Having given birth to a music career and to a human child within the span of a few months, celebrated percussionist James Pants withdrew into solitude for some weeks in the year 2008. Hermetically ensuring his privacy in his remote cabin in & around Spokane, Washington, Pants spurned the noise and clatter of the globetrotting lifestyle, as he nurtured his seed in the form of beautiful baby girl Olive, and took to penning this concept album, now known as Seven Seals. For the moment, with the exception of his touring of Europe and China, wowing the throngs with his exhilarating live ensemble Royal Zodiac, the reclusive Pants occupies himself almost entirely with his offspring, and the disciplined study of oceanography, astronomy and gourmet Latin cooking. For fans of: Gary Wilson, Mort Garson, Beck, The Doors, Bruce Haack."

FORMER GHOSTS: Fleurs LP (UTR 035LP)
"Former Ghosts is the synthpop inspired band formed and led by Freddy Ruppert (of this song is a mess but so am I) and consisting of Jamie Stewart (of Xiu Xiu) and Nika Roza (of Zola Jesus). The album sweeps through you with it's sweet melodic side, sprinkling in sharp, chaotic, discordant moments -- as if to punish you for having enjoyed yourself, for having let your guard down. 'Dreams' plays through with melodies and textures reminiscent of early synth-pop, kept alive with the warm heart-like thumping of the synthetic kick drum. Freddy's (This Song Is A Mess But So Am I) vocals crawl low through the hallucinatory soundscape, led on by the gentle buttering of Jamie's back-ups in the chorus. Jamie's (Xiu Xiu, etc) influence on the album enters obliquely, buttering some of the albums harder edges, organizing the sometimes disoriented moments of glitch and electro-mania. He plays an unfamiliar role -- softer, more understated (in his particular context) -- but in his familiar style. Starring solo on 'I Wave,' you're drawn into the springy synths, cushioned by his smooth voice--the track is almost a reprieve from heavier textures found elsewhere in the album."

VA: Camp Vidab 2 12" (VIDAB 011EP)
"Here we go with the second part of our Camp Vidab compilation series. On the A-side you find 'Life In The Balance,' the label debut of Ed Davenport. A sunny piece of house music heavily influenced by disco and Detroit. The B-side comes with a track by Oliver Deutschmann. 'PaleRedHead' got a strong touch of Berghain styled techno embedded in melancholic darkness."
