39 CLOCKS: Pain It Dark CD (BB 025CD)
The Bureau B label reissues the first album by Hannover, Germany duo 39 Clocks, originally released in 1981 by No Fun Records. Many a wild tale has enriched the history of 39 Clocks. For example, the time they went on stage with vacuum cleaners and circular saws instead of guitars, the LSD inside their heads having erased all memory of how to play their songs. Or the time when they were expelled from the Documenta, because Joseph Beuys was aggravated by their music. Then there was the angry member of the audience who attacked one of the band members with a knife on stage. Not forgetting the concert in a cavernous aircraft hangar where the amps were turned up so loud that by the end of the show, not a single spectator was left. Sounds music magazine duly confirmed it the "Concert of the Month." The great thing is that every one of these stories is true. Christian Henjes (aka C.H. 39) and Jürgen Gleue (aka J.G. 39) as 39 Clocks were one of the most provocative bands Germany has ever produced; pop scholar Diedrich Diederichsen described them as the best German band of the '80s. The Clocks took shape in 1979, turning their backs on punk and inventing "Psycho Beat," the self-styled counterpoint to the burgeoning German new wave scene, the NDW. Their music can be seen as a futuristic, definitively urban, German form of U.S. '60s garage punk, with a referential nod to New York's Suicide and The Velvet Underground -- sparse and gritty garage chord progressions, hypnotic rhythms (invariably emanating from the beatbox) and deadpan English lyrics delivered with the heaviest of German accents. The 39 Clocks pushed back the borders of experimentation with their barely-tolerable live improvisation and atonal meanderings, lower than lo-fi, with a tinny beatbox that tested the resilience of their listeners to the full. Despite some shaky success, geographical and mental shifts brought about their eventual split in 1983. This CD reissue contains a previously-unreleased bonus track and a 12-page booklet illustrated with a wealth of rare photos featuring liner notes by ZickZack record label founder Alfred Hilsberg.

ROEDELIUS, HANS-JOACHIM: Durch Die Wüste CD (BB 028CD)
The Bureau B label reissues the first solo record by composer/poet Hans-Joachim Roedelius, one of the most prolific musicians of the German avant-garde and a key figure in the birth of Krautrock, synthesizer pop and ambient music. Durch Die Wüste was originally released in 1978 on Sky Records, and fans of German electronica awaited the LP with particular anticipation, as the founding member of Cluster/Kluster/Harmonia had played a major role in the development of synthesizer music. They were in for a shock, however, as Durch Die Wüste turned out to be anything but an electronic album; in the avant-garde landscape of popular music, the record was a beacon of innovation. Initial reaction was rather less auspicious, centering around the question: what did this music have to do with Harmonia and Cluster? Anyone who has listened carefully to Cluster's 1974 effort Zuckerzeit will have come to recognize Roedelius' stamp on this and all subsequent Cluster and Harmonia albums. Just how far Roedelius would develop his own compositional technique and mode of playing would only become obvious when he was set free from the ensemble environment. Listeners at the time were baffled by just how little electronically-generated sounds were a feature of the album. Synthesizers and electronic effects did play a part, but Roedelius integrated them so seamlessly into the arrangement, that one barely noticed them. The rhythm machine was relegated to the status of metronome. In fact, Roedelius' decision to distance himself from electronic music, rigid in structure as it had become, and turn to a new form of musical expression, is what really gave the album its experimental character. Recorded over a 2-year period assisted by engineer Dave Hutchins and Conny Plank, who also contributed his unmistakable guitar and percussion style, and Dieter Moebius, who, in spite of everything, set a few significant markers with the synthesizer. There is a space-y, organic, relatable warmth to this record that absolutely transcends time. This reissue is housed in a digipak including a booklet with liner notes by Asmus Tietchens. Vinyl version pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

ENO/MOEBIUS/ROEDELIUS: After The Heat LP (BB 030LP)
LP version. Originally released in 1978 on Sky Records, After The Heat was the second collaborative release by Brian Eno with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster). Produced once again by Conny Plank, After The Heat is a suite of micro-managed organic and electronic instrumentation that features recited and sung vocals by Eno on 3 tracks. As Asmus Tietchens writes in the liner notes: "Cluster & Eno can, with the benefit of hindsight and without overstating its case, be seen as the first ambient album to have been produced in Germany. The second LP, After The Heat, is, however, a completely different story. Whilst Cluster & Eno bears the hallmark of a Cluster composition guided by Eno's ambient concept, After The Heat is more of an Eno album bearing stylistic characteristics of Cluster music." Sweet, slow-moving and airy, with a modern classical/prog appeal.

VA: Funky Fräuleins CD (BB 031CD)
Subtitled: Female Beat, Groove, Disco, Funk In Germany 1968-1978. The Bureau B label offers up 18 glistening pearls of Germanified groove, federal funk and imperial beat from the '60s and '70s, all with one common denominator: swinging Fräuleins holding the microphone. Most of them are genuine locals. Some, however, had the most fleeting guest appearances as Fräuleins, while others arrived from different countries to carve out a career in Germany and ended up staying for decades. When they start to sway their slim hips and flutter their eyelashes, no man is safe. Famed the world over for their charms and allure, in-bred elegance and, of course, for the groove which courses through their veins -- from Hamburg to Vienna, from Cologne to Dresden, from the swinging '60s beat and Austrian black humor of Topsy Küppers, to the lascivious eroticism and fluffy funk of Heidelinde Weis, to wild rock moments from Heidi Brühl (ostensibly with Jimmy Page on the guitar), to the hippie vibes of Renate Kern with the Kai Warner Orchestra, to Caterina Valente's ridiculously memorable version of "Blueberry Hill," these are the groove girls and beat queens of yesteryear who won't fail to get you schlagered. Other artists include: Su Kramer, Marianne Mendt, Roberta Kelly, Vicky Leandros, Olivia Molina, Hildegard Knef, Evelyn Künnecke, Peggy March, Sandra Haas, Jane Morel, Shirley Thompson, Marianne Rosenberg, and Lotte Und Leherb.

LIKE A STUNTMAN: Original Bedouin Culture CD (BB 033CD)
This is the second full-length release by Hamburg, Germany's Like A Stuntman (Matthias Gros, Christian Fleck, Tobi Ullrich & Sven Fritz). In 2005, the quartet released their debut album, made available almost solely in the UK, with touring activities similarly focused in the UK as well. Four years on, Like A Stuntman are ready to take it well over and beyond the Isles with Original Bedouin Culture, an exhilarating celebration of eclectic instrumentation and the blending together of past and future influences that span an incredibly diverse roster of genres and eras. Fan Schneider TM on Original Bedouin Culture: "The album traces an arc from the sounds and spirit of late '60s psychedelia, the class of 1968 and a little later, The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, Silver Apples, bands from Brazil's Tropicália movement such as Os Mutantes, etc., through the musical influences and laconic humor of some early '90s post-post-punk indie-rock bands like Sebadoh and Pavement up to a personal take on turn-of-the-century 'weird folk,' with a nod to Krautrock and the liberation of electronic music by artists from Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin or the Warp label." Das Bierbeben's Rasmus Engler describes the album as such: "Shy vocals, possibly recorded under bedcovers, duet with warm banks of synthesizer; acoustic and electric guitars speak up and buzz through subtly-crafted songs. Original Bedouin Culture succeeds in building a bridge from Matador to Warp, with ECM and free-folk communes visible from its center. A fantastic record that could make you lose your mind!"

KANENOBU, SACHIKO: Misora CD (CH 054CD)
Originally reissued in 2006 by Chapter Music, this is the 1972 debut album by Sachiko Kanenobu, an artist generally acknowledged as the first Japanese woman to release an album of her own songwriting. It's a near-perfect folk masterpiece, alternating full-bodied arrangements (produced by Harry Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Happy End) with Sachiko's lonesome guitar and pure, soaring vocals. Discovered as a precocious 18 year-old in Osaka, Sachiko was signed in 1968 to Japan's first real independent record label, URC (Underground Record Club), who changed Japan's musical landscape irrevocably in the late '60s and early '70s with artists like Happy End, Folk Crusaders and Kenji Endo. Sachiko was the only female artist on this era-defining label. But just a few months before Misora (roughly translated as "Beautiful Sky") was released, Sachiko left Japan and secretly emigrated to America to marry music critic Paul Williams (Crawdaddy, Rolling Stone). She did not record again for almost a decade and didn't release another album until 1992. Instead, she settled with Williams in small-town California and raised two sons. Misora was released in her absence and promptly disappeared. World-renowned science fiction writer Philip K Dick, a Williams family friend, actually encouraged Sachiko to return to music in the early '80s. He was executive producer for a single recorded in 1981, but sadly died before he could realize his ambition to produce Sachiko's comeback album. Still, Sachiko was inspired by his encouragement to reinvent herself as a "folk-punk" singer, forming new band Culture Shock in the mid-'80s. Sachiko still performs to this day, and since Misora was rediscovered by Japanese fans in the early '90s, she has returned to her homeland many times to perform. Misora is now regarded as a landmark in Japanese musical history, and Sachiko is revered there as a true underground folk pioneer. Truly mellow, still relevant, and sounding as fresh as the day it was recorded, Chapter Music's edition of Misora is the first for the English-speaking world, featuring extensive liner notes, lyrics translated into English by Sachiko herself, and never-before-seen photos from the singer's own archives.

HIT THE JACKPOT: Soul Money Gang Vibe CD (CH 060CD)
Originally released in 2008 by Chapter Music, this is the second full-length album by Adelaide trio Hit The Jackpot, who play simple, noisy pop songs, swapping instruments and sharing vocals. They believe that enthusiasm and sincerity are more important than technical proficiency, and take inspiration from the likes of Beat Happening, Dinosaur Jr. and The Clean. The ten tracks on the album were recorded in the second half of 2007 at the band's own home studio. Hit The Jackpot formed as a two-piece in early 2003, comprising young couple Jess Thomas and Kynan Lawlor. With a sparse but dynamic line-up of drums and guitar, they played just a handful of shows before supporting Sonic Youth on their 2004 Australian tour. They released a self-titled EP around the same time, which ended up in the #3 spot on Adelaide radio station 3D's "Top 100 For 2004." Hit The Jackpot were joined by Sebastien Calabretto (and a bass guitar) in 2005 and released their debut album Clowns in 2006. With Seb leaving for the grey shores of England early in 2008, Hit The Jackpot recruited Scott O'Hara (Lindsey Lowhand, True Radical Miracle). In this formation, Soul Money Gang Vibe is a sparse, yet often heavy swathe of noisy, feedbacked guitar scrawl and jangle, My Bloody Valentine moodiness, and off-kilter male/female vocal harmonics.

BLOOM, KATH: Terror CD (CH 061CD)
Originally released in 2008 on Chapter Music, Terror is the first official album of new material by Connecticut folk legend, Kath Bloom -- recorded at Barking Spider Studios in Warren, CT with Kath and her husband Stan Bronski. Kath was born and raised in New Haven, CT, where she learned to play guitar among the headstones of her local cemetery. She met avant-garde guitarist Loren MazzaCane Connors in 1976, and together they recorded six limited edition albums of fragile folk and blues melodies between 1981 and 1984. Her new songs, however, reveal a singer and songwriter as accomplished and affecting as Lucinda Williams or Gillian Welch. Most tracks primarily feature Kath's gentle guitar-picking, haunting vocals, and mournful harmonica, although guitarist Marty Carlson, husband Stan and long-time collaborator Tom Hanford added finishing touches to many tracks. The material ranges from vintage to brand-new to as far back as her days with Loren ("Something To Tell You"). After her collaborations with Connors, Kath entered a period of child-rearing and family life, returning to recording in the early '90s. Director Richard Linklater discovered Bloom's music and featured her song "Come Here" in a pivotal scene in his 1995 film Before Sunrise. By then, Bloom had begun recording again in earnest, self-releasing a series of cassettes and CD-Rs. Finally, released on Chapter Music in 2006 was her first non-CD-R release since 1984. This is arresting, simple, down-to-earth folk music from a poetically-skilled lyricist with a beautifully-frayed voice.

BLOOM & LOREN CONNORS, KATH: Sing The Children Over/Sand In My Shoe 2CD (CH 063CD)
Originally released by Chapter Music in 2008, this is the first of two double disc reissues by extraordinary early-'80s folk duo Kath Bloom and Loren Connors. Meeting in 1976 in their hometown of New Haven, CT, Bloom and Connors formed a creative partnership that has haunted psych-folk fans ever since, releasing six albums of fragile, avant-garde folk-blues in miniscule quantities, all of which now change hands for huge sums. At first, Kath would act out monologues while Loren played his free-form guitar, extrapolated from Mississippi Delta and Chicago blues. But while Loren worked on his now-legendary nine-volume series Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations, he and Kath's performances gradually became more song-based. Kath began practicing guitar among the headstones of New Haven's Grove Street cemetery, while Loren's idiosyncratic style had been developing since the 1960s. By the early '80s, after self-releasing two limited-edition live albums, the duo were playing occasionally outside of New Haven, and soon Boston independent label Ambiguous Records approached them to record their first studio effort. Acclaimed jazz critic and music historian Nat Hentoff wrote sensitive, insightful liner notes and Sing The Children Over emerged in 1982 and Sand In My Shoe in 1983. The albums mixed traditional folk and blues songs with Kath's originals, revealing Kath to be an accomplished and moving songwriter. It also set up the dynamic template that she and Loren would follow over their remaining recordings -- Kath's fragile voice and subdued finger-picked guitar set against Loren's playing: abstract, skittering, sometimes atonal but always intuitively supportive. Together the duo created a sound almost impossibly emotional and haunting, one unlike anything created before or since. By 1984, however, Kath was married with a young son, and Connors himself was entering a new relationship, so the duo found themselves drifting apart. And now, after almost 25 years, these original recordings are again available to be soaked up, marveled at and relished. Completely remastered, and containing extensive liner notes, original photos and artwork, and a treasure trove of bonus tracks.

LOCO DICE: 7 Dunham Place CD (DESOLAT 001CD)
Originally released in 2008, this is the debut full-length release by renowned Düsseldorf minimal DJ, producer and Desolat label-head, Loco Dice. 7 Dunham Place has been created to take the listener on a journey: an album to be treasured as a fine-textured catalog of the senses. Loco Dice, who spends much of his time shuttling between the world's main electronic music ports as an in-demand DJ, packed up his studio and relocated to New York City. There, he fomented a raw and simmering soundtrack: a nuance-packed collection of sonic interpretations of scenes, characters and moods from the most diverse and mythologized city in the world. The album specifically pays homage to their adopted home base, Brooklyn, while sketching the trajectory of a musical life uprooted and transplanted, where dream-like feelings of isolation and melancholy transmute into a sense of place and kinship. Loco Dice began a fruitful studio partnership with Martin Buttrich in 2002 leading to tracks like "Phat Dope Shit," "Menina Brasiliera," and "Seeing Through Shadows," and these productions are meticulously planned by Dice. It's a directorial, cinematic outlook, which permeates Dice's everyday life: fed by his experiences living in extreme environments like Ibiza and New York, as well as drawing on elaborate film scripts imagined as a young Loco Dice on the streets of Flingern in Düsseldorf and the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia. It's an album that re-imagines the soul of a city, built from careful observations of urban tribes that crisscross and sometimes clash, of minute details and sensory impressions. From the two guys at the local deli who're always on the verge of fighting over football results or presidential candidates, to the tattooed lady couple who sell the morning soul food, all find their way into this cohesive collection of tracks which breathe deeply, and as they exhale, tell a story. "M Train To Brooklyn" includes the sounds of a subway train on the tracks, with a low-slung, incredibly relaxed vibe, "Esquina" is a Latin-themed piano-led track with bouncy beats, and "Tight Laces" uses sampled female voices, shakers, and analog squiggles that make the track sound absolutely propulsive, like everyday life. 7 Dunham Place is your city-commute headphones soundtrack with reduced grooves, kept infinitely personal.

VARIANT: The Setting Sun CD (ECHOSPACE AIR2)
Stephen Hitchell (Intrusion, cv313) delivers a serious treat for his legion of devoted followers with the next logical step in the Echospace saga leading to this release exploring sublime ambient electronics in a textured, analog style. As Variant, Hitchell delves into his most expansive and inspiring palette, layering materials onto his canvas with a widescreen scope and an emotionally-affected, cinematic intent that makes this a deeply engrossing listen. Made for an obviously specific time and place, "The Setting Sun" marks a shift in Hitchell's work, sounding more like Oren Ambarchi or Keith Fullerton Whitman than any of the more familiar names his work has been associated with in the past. Incorporating resonant pianos, hazily thrummed guitars and swelling organs with rippling waves of curling analog distortion, this is surely one of the most outstanding pieces in his catalog. "As Time Stood Still" features a deeply-padded flow of ebbing atmospherics, lapping every intangible surface of the womb-like sub-bass-bubble that Hitchell creates with a concoction of vintage analog hardware and reel-to-reel recording techniques. All taken together, The Setting Sun sounds like the slow inhalation and exhalation of deep, meditative breathing, or like rain falling from a grey sky. This is a hugely involving listen that will appeal to followers of Tim Hecker AND Basic Channel, or Vladislav Delay AND Oren Ambarchi.

FM3: Buddha Machine II - Aqua Soundbox (BUDDHA02-AQUA)
Two new colors of the Buddha Machine 2.0 -- aqua and lime. Blurring the line between music box and musical instrument, the Buddha Machine 2.0 is an interactive album that lets users customize the listening experience. Drop the pitch and the music ebbs in a low ambient drone. Boost the speed and suddenly it's alive with melody. Add a few more machines, set them at different speeds and you have an evolving audio perfume. Plug it into a mixer, add some beats or vocals or guitar... FM3 won't mind. In fact, they encourage people to use the Buddha Machine as inspiration. Since its release in 2005, the original Buddha Machine has sold more than 50,000 units worldwide and has won praise from artists as diverse as Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Low, Monolake, Sunn O))), Blixa Bargeld and Mike Patton. Legendary producer Brian Eno was the first customer for the original Buddha Machine and nearly 3 years later told FM3 he still "cherishes" his purchase! Similar in shape and design to the original Buddha Machine, but boasting more robust construction and improved sound quality. For those who haven't experienced the pleasure of the original, the Buddha Machine is essentially a small plastic box that plays ambient loops. The loops repeat endlessly until the "track" is switched or the two AA batteries (not included) run out. The machine has its own built-in speaker and there is also a headphone jack for a more personal experience. But the charm of the device isn't nearly as specific: the Buddha Machine has a calming presence in today's fast-paced world. Its charm mixes with FM3's innovative music to provide the owner with an experience that is hard to define. Essentially, it's a box with a life, a tool for living, and to many, it's a friend. Founded in 1999 by Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian, FM3 are considered pioneers of electronic music in China. Inspired by Buddhist prayer boxes found at temples around Asia, the duo released the original Buddha Machine in April 2005, winning acclaim in publications including BoingBoing.net, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, XLR8R, and basically everywhere else.

Previously released on CD by Guerssen Records, now available on vinyl. This is the second album from Oregon's The Tree People, the late '70s Oregon-based predecessors to the ongoing new folk movement in the USA. Surely not, especially because it was a cassette-only release with a very short print-run. The sound quality on this reissue is splendid, and the music itself is equally as good, if not better than, their self-titled debut and is a real must for any folk and psych-folk lover. Acoustic guitars, subtle percussion, pastoral flute work and some warm vocals make The Tree People's music absolutely ahead of its time. A real beauty! MESO MESO: Mitten CD (LACIES 001CD)
Originally released in 2008. Equally indebted to the progressive J-pop of Piana and the sonic template set out by Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir-era múm, Meso Meso is the solo project of a young lady from Tokyo named Yumiko, a musician whose whispered songcraft is unassuming to the point of outright shyness, occasionally occupying the same terrifyingly twee musical no-fly zone as the likes of Lullatone. Musically, Meso Meso's universe is inhabited by glockenspiels, accordion, melodica and toy pianos, all skillfully-arranged around her bashfully quiet vocals. At times, her voice sounds as if it's been recorded in the middle of a nap, particularly on second track "Danro," a musical sleepwalk led by gorgeously plodding acoustic guitar, but ultimately characterized by that implausibly delicate singing voice. Even at its most boisterous, Mitten is the very embodiment of understatement, jangling mellifluously through the melange of sampled recordings and bric-a-brac that makes up the opening cut "Alice," which comes as close to conventional pop music as any of the other charmingly shambolic meanderings on this beguiling album. Really quite adorable music that offsets over-preciousness with an undercurrent of secret, eccentric soulfulness.

ARCHIVIST, THE: The Keeper Of The Library CD (LACIES 002CD)
Craig Tattersall aka The Archivist has made regular and notable appearances over the years, as a member of Hood, The Remote Viewer and The Boats, as well as under his more recent Humble Bee moniker and work with his own Moteer and Mobeer imprints. This second release on bijou imprint Lacies Records features carefully-compiled gems from his extensive archive of unreleased material, assembling vintage recordings unearthed from dusty tapes and hard drives for what amounts to a 45-minute journey through wondrous, heartbreaking music. If you've followed Tattersall's work over the years, you'll have an idea of what to expect here, but it's just material of the highest possible calibre, all microscopic, percolating rhythms and fragile instruments dancing around each other with an effortless beauty that never fails to reach deep inside your soul and leave you with that bittersweet aftertaste that's just impossible to describe. Achingly beautiful music.

NORBURY, DANNY: Light In August CD (LACIES 003CD)
This is the debut full-length release by Manchester, UK cellist Danny Norbury. In addition to his work as a solo artist, Norbury has contributed to music by Library Tapes, The Boats, Nancy Elizabeth and Rafael Anton Irisarri of The Sight Below. This incredible album, Light In August, finds Norbury assuming the role of a one-man ensemble, spinning a collection of understated string and piano elegies, harnessing an incredibly intimate cinematic quality. Norbury's music taps into the neo-classicisms of Rachel's or Hildur Guðnadóttir, with gentle, harmonized cello figures and minimal keystrokes leading the way. A maudlin grasp on romanticism takes hold of pieces like "The Morning Star" and "Small Field," setting the tone for what's to come: a set that wrings every drop of emotion from Norbury's instrumental palette. Fans of Peter Broderick's Float album, or the aforementioned Hildur Guðnadóttir's Without Sinking will fall in love at first listen, but Norbury manages to map out his very own niche within the current crop of modern classical musicians on outstanding entries such as the quietly devastating "This Night Is For You And For Me" and final track "The Evening Star," whose extreme cello glissandos mimic pedal steel tones, arcing across the horizon in the most heart-rending of fashions.

MAURIZI, FABRIZIO: Habitat 12" (MINUS 070EP)
Italian minimalist Fabrizio has an ear for the dramatic and a distinctive approach to mapping clean and precise percussive efx. "Daddy Diego" flickers between light and shadow. Cavernous vocal sighs rise from the depths while the metallic melody and slow-phasing laser tone offer an effective foil to the low-end bass drive. On "Mars Needs Bitches," the looping bass groove slides through a creaking trap door with heavily-treated robotic voices and sci-fi efx punctuating the sparse groove, ensuring the crowd never stops moving.

VA: Rocksteady: The Roots Of Reggae CD (MOLL 016CD)
Rocksteady: The Roots Of Reggae documents a rare and legendary all-star reunion project in Kingston, Jamaica in 2008, featuring some of the biggest and most influential artists of the genre. Comprised of 15 brand-new, deeply-inspired recordings of well-known rocksteady classics, recorded in the original old school style at Tuff Gong Studios, and featuring the original singers and musicians who embody the golden era of rocksteady: Leroy Sibbles, Hopeton Lewis, Judy Mowatt, U-Roy, Ken Boothe, Derrick Morgan, Dawn Penn, Stranger Cole (feat. Gladstone Anderson), Marcia Griffith, and Lynn Taitt. This project was also chronicled in a heart-warming documentary film that shows the making of the album with stories, remarkable live performances, and vintage footage -- soon to screen at theaters worldwide. These are the sweet, soulful songs that transitioned away from Jamaican ska in the mid- to late-'60s, adding heavier bass lines, lyrics about love and conflict, and a slower tempo, readying the way for the full fruition of reggae. Lead and guided by Studio One guitarist/bandleader Ernest Ranglin, mixed by legendary audio engineer Erroll Brown and based on arrangements by rocksteady guitarist, Lynn Taitt. Housed in an 8-panel digipack, including a 16-page booklet with detailed, historical liner notes.

SLANEY, IVOR: Terror/Prey - The Original Unreleased Soundtrack Recording CD (MVM 002/3CD)
Moscovitch Music is the new label from record archaeologist and one-half of cult exotica group Quiet Village, Joel Martin, and is devoted to releasing all the weird and wonderful music you've never heard before from obscure film scores to ecological jazz. The label's first release compiles the unissued film soundtracks to legendary UK horror director Norman J. Warren's Terror (1979) and Prey (1978), both composed by one of TV and radio's most prolific arrangers, Ivor Slaney (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, The Double Deckers, Ren & Stimpy, De Wolfe Music Library) and features dark proto-synth wave, electronic hip-hop, folk/soul and dirty cabaret rock. Joel was one of the first record collectors to compile original soundtrack/library music back in 1997 for the legendary Bite Hard LP (BBE), a retrospective of the famous UK-based De Wolfe label, which has since been sampled by the likes of Jay Z and Kool G Rap. Joel works for De Wolfe as head of their reissue department, who have released the album Kung Fu Super Sounds, a retrospective of the Shaw Brothers' cult martial arts films of 1975-1984. Joel also conceived and compiled the unreleased score to George A. Romero's classic zombie film Dawn Of The Dead (1978) which was issued on Trunk Records in 2004, to critical acclaim. Terror/Prey includes 35 unheard tracks -- full of shrill, nauseating swarms of minor-key, flanging synths, wonky guitar stomp, cloying, murky piano and clarinet ballads, an acoustic jazz number with vocals by Val McKenna, and some breakbeat-infused percussion-led groovers. Just as sinister and terrifying as the Dario Argento/Ennio Morricone soundtracks, but slightly more leering and cheeky. Includes a beautiful full-color 12-page booklet complete with rare stills and sleevenotes from director Norman J. Warren and Cherrystones (Gareth Goddard). Vinyl edition limited to 1,000 copies only for the world.

SIMMONDS, IAN: The Burgenland Dubs CD (MKR 003CD)
Relocated from Wales to Jena, Germany, Ian Simmonds (aka Juryman) is responsible for pure innovation on the electronic scene. He left London in 2005 and began a new chapter in the East German province of scenic Jena in Thuringia, recording The Burgenland Dubs in the old Castle Wendelstein in the middle of the vineyard region in Unstrut Valley in Burgenland Saxony-Anhalt. Working in an environment with faulty heating, rotting old windows, and two hard winters that set ice crystals in his beard, Simmonds toiled in his castle like a sorcerer in his spiritual craft, revealing an album filled with maritime dimensions, rhythmic, lyrical moments, dramatic beat wizardry, and orchestral presence. This album also demonstrates a swinging, acoustic flight of traditional instrumentation paired with modern electric sonic culture. He also doesn't shy away from soul and jazz, and possesses a smooth British breakstep sense and even the depths and straight lines from Detroit. His sound began on the bass with the extraordinary combo, Sandals (1992-1994), whose proliferation anticipated British-isle club innovation. As Juryman, Simmonds began to merge modern music with traditional. From there came unbeatable productions in the form of 12" remixes, albums on renowned labels like SSR, Ntone, Studio-K7!, Pussyfoot, G-Stone, Compost, and more. The Burgenland Dubs is pure beat-fiddling sound research plus orchestral radiance and moving, warm peak-time brush-strokes for the home or club.

DE MARTINVILLE, EDOUARD-LEON SCOTT: Au Clair de la Lune 7" (PT 1001EP)
Dust-to-Digital proudly inaugurates its vinyl imprint Parlortone with the earliest intelligible recording of the human voice: a historic 20-second version of "Au Clair de la Lune" made in 1860, 17 years before Thomas Edison invented the phonograph. This one-sided 45rpm record comes complete with an etched back, a descriptive essay and a reproduction of Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville's original "Au Clair..." phonautogram. Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville was born in France in 1817. As a printer by trade, he was able to read accounts of the latest scientific discoveries and became an inventor. On March 25, 1857, he received French patent #17,897/31,470 for the phonautograph. This device made a visual image of sound waves on a cylinder, but did not play or reproduce any sounds. Scott used a horn to collect sound, a diaphragm at the end of the horn that vibrated from the sound, a stiff brush bristle attached to the diaphragm, and a rotating cylinder covered with lampblack or blackened paper that recorded the wavy lines from the vibrating diaphragm and bristle. Example "No. 5" -- "Au Clair de la Lune" was recorded on April 9, 1860. Scott prepared its recording surface by wrapping a sheet of paper around a cylinder, which he rotated over a smoking lantern to cover with soot. He recorded with two styli -- one driven by the vibrations of a tuning fork, the other driven by a membrane vibrating in sympathy with his voice. He removed the paper from the cylinder and immersed it in an alcohol-based fixative from behind its curtain of noise. He sang purposely into his instrument to reveal the shape of sounds and the frequency of his notes. In listening to "Au Clair..." we eavesdrop not on a musical performance, but on a scientific experiment -- wafting imperfectly through a window in time.

MAPLEWOOD: Maplewood CD (TR 068CD)
This is the sought-after debut album by Brooklyn's Maplewood, originally released in 2004. Rising up on a breeze of three-part harmonies and 12-string acoustic guitars, Maplewood evokes a joyride up the Pacific Coast Highway. Like the scent of night jasmine in bloom, the Maplewood sound wafts from the canyons to the beaches and out into the desert, an ode to a Californian ideal mapped out by such precursors as America, Bread, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gene Clark, '70s-era Beach Boys, late-period Byrds, The Stone Canyon Band, John Phillips, Neil Young, Hearts And Flowers, and even CSNY. For the five dudes who make up Maplewood, lost gems like "Ventura Highway" and "Make It With You" evolved from guilty pleasure to buried treasure: in such castoff anthems of mellowness, Maplewood managed to find improbable inspiration. Call it canyon rock, call it breeze rock, Maplewood is like a desert sunrise, like a dappled afternoon up in the orange groves, like a moon-lit walk on the beach and a swig of dandelion wine with the one you love the most. Maplewood is Mark Rozzo, Steve Koester, Craig Schoen, and Ira Elliot.

DIAL M FOR MURDER!: Fiction Of Her Dreams CD (TR 163CD)
This is the debut full-length release by Sweden's Dial M For Murder!. After 2008's Oh No!/The Mourning Comes The Morning After vinyl single stirred up much interest all over Europe, Sweden's Dial M For Murder! fulfills all the promises made by that 45 rpm gem. Fiction Of Her Dreams is a powerful and dark manifesto celebrating the everyday highs and lows of life in Europe's North in the first decade of the new millennium. Winter's anxieties, summer's confusing adrenaline rush and springtime's yearly hopeful new beginnings are all part and parcel of this multifaceted album. References to '80s British dream-pop bands such as A.R. Kane and The Chameleons are to be found, as well as the aesthetics of classic bands like Joy Division or current contenders Interpol and Ladytron. Theirs is a sound that has been scraped raw -- moody, haunting vocals, gritty melodies, fuzzy electric guitars, mean-sounding synths, dirty drum-boxes -- it's all here. Dial M For Murder! is a duo comprised of David Ortenlöf and Andy Lantto. Stating Alfred Hitchcock, love and hate, low-frequency bass, old drum machines, London and indie fashion as outside influences, Dial M For Murder!'s sense of style and purpose comes as no surprise. Produced by Fredrik Jansson and the band, recorded mostly at night, Fiction Of Her Dreams is a strong post-punk/dark wave statement with some very cool songs and attitude in abundance.

APPLESCAL: A Slave's Commitment CD (TRAUM 021CD)
This is the debut full-length release from The Netherlands' Applescal. Even after releasing only one 12" on Traum, the label is confident that this young artist embodies the new wave in indie electronic dance music -- a hunch now given some weight after Applescal was voted "Producer of the Year" in his home country. On A Slave's Commitment, he combines melodic electronics and dance tracks with grunge, creating an almost live-band sound. There is a lot of explosive youthfulness here, reflecting newer heroes and influencers like Apparat and Extrawelt, rather than Richie Hawtin or Ricardo Villalobos. The CD starts off with the beautiful track "The History Of Love," making the world feel like it's twisting in slow-motion. "Nottingham Hobbits" transports and extends a similar emotion, whereas "Ugly But Nasty" introduces dirty acid bass lines, reminiscent of his Traum 12" track, "Monster." "In The Mirror" has a bit more of a band approach, sounding like The Cure, My Bloody Valentine or Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, and carrying a ghostly atmosphere with chords and feedback. "Music For Her Ears" is the ambient piece... a bit of a sad and melancholic track that somehow connects modern electronica with piano. "I Can't Stand" also works with ambience, but rocks away into a sort of a shuffle beat. "The Forms Of Abstract Life" is a masterpiece, intimately visualizing the beauty of flowers and nature. "The Red Dress" is a noise interlude -- psychedelic, alienated and strange. "Funk and FC" is a grinding acid track that starts quiet and works with a classic build-up, getting frantic and noisy. Applescal also remixed a track by the Dutch band Local Daddies, using the vocals and bass of the original and changing everything else around it, giving it a Portishead twist. The album closes with "Reeeer," a melodic and comic track that swallows everything in its path, like a colorful and happy/sad Aphex Twin.

BRODERICK, PETER: 4 Track Songs 2LP (TYPE 044LP)
Double LP version. This is the third full-length release by Peter Broderick for the Type label. In just a few short years, the multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, composer and all-round Renaissance man has shot from being a darling of the underground to something far more substantial. Constantly touring, Peter has accrued fans far and wide with his alluring folk songs and gorgeous post-classical compositions -- but all this had to start somewhere. A few years ago, Peter sent Type a package containing all his material prior to writing 2008's Float -- two CD-Rs, lovingly hand-labelled 4 Track Songs. Recorded to tape using only a cheap microphone, Peter assembled these tracks as and when they came to his head. From delicate piano improvisations to fully-fledged songs more reminiscent of Home, this is a charming and heart-warming portal into Peter's early creative process. More than that though, these songs are so defiant in their hazy, lo-fi beauty, that they stand on their own as pieces that can never possibly be repeated. Moving from track to track with all the grace of that chunky stop button on a cassette recorder, we are treated to both volumes of Peter's early recordings, and although they might have been released before, they actually never sold a single copy. Through dedications to get-well-soon messages to simple musings on life, each song seems to come straight from the heart and is untroubled by the trappings of modern production. This is pure, simple and ineffably beautiful music which shows the beginnings of a truly special talent.

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER: Zones Without People LP (ARBOR 115LP)
"Daniel Lopatin's Oneohtrix Point Never represents a rift in time; an isolationist expedition into the archaeology of sound that utilizes the analog polysynth as a means of organic creation. Zones Without People is the second record in the OPN trilogy; acting as a bridge between the drifting, nebulous landscapes of Betrayed in The Octagon and the finely detailed sound sculpture of Lopatin's present work. An exercise in 'in between-ness': reconciling noise and melodicism, drone stasis and the transience of concrète, and the amorphous zone between 70s Kraut synth music and 80s techno. Arpeggios and sequencers play a key role in this amalgamation, as these forms of repetition create an attachment to a certain sentiment neither human nor machine. The record reflects this transformation; the A Side has distinct emotional flourishes, while the majority of the B Side seems to be overtaken in cold, mechanized melodies; attempts at teaching a machine to feel. The final track, 'Hyperdawn,' is a solution to these two disparate modes of interpreting stimuli: a pure union of veins and patch cables. In an edition of 500 copies in pro printed cardboard sleeves with pro printed labels and an insert by Christelle Gualdi."

His modular synthesized low-end focus reaches new depths with each release; managing to provide a richness in texture and a deep listening experience in slow moving forms. Hutson exercises a dedicated control and mastery in composition as a result of his overwhelming knowledge of the potentials of sound. Far off organ chords become enveloped by an atmospheric heavy air; melody isn't shunned, but obscured. Frequencies arranged seamlessly, with a modest approach; like the growth of a grey cloud. In an edition of 400 12" EPs cut at 45rpm in proprinted cardboard sleeves with printed labels."

CYNOSURE (CANADA):
JOHNSON & DAVE BARKER, BRETT: Temptation & Lies - The Cynosure Remixes 12" (CYN 035EP)
"Sometimes a track is so hot it just has to come back around again. About ten years ago Brett Johnson and Dave Barker (Stucco Homes) wrote some unbelievably catching house tunes, one of them being 'Temptation and Lies.' So it just seemed right to give this track yet another life. Deadbeat and Mike Shannon dive deep into a stripped down techno groover, removing the constant use of the vocals and creating a rolling techno dub version. Some seriously deep bass in the production that works the subs in all the right places. Ernesto Ferreyra and Guillaume Coutu Dumont aka Chic Miniature give you a playful melodic version on the flip. Full use of the original chord progressions, combined with the guys signature Marimba/Latin percussion leaving you with a lush, warm summer hit. Then Brett Dives into the track again giving you the 'Oohs and Ahhs Mix.' A ten minutes work out with BJ's patented groove focused on the vocal harmonies in the original. The result is a warped, spaced out long player that is sure to twist a few heads. Mental just about sums it up. Of course we had to include the original masterpiece for those who didn't find it the first time round. A favorite of everyone involved on the remix project I think you'll agree that the 'Temptation and Lies' Cynosure mixes do the original some justice."

HIEROGLYPHIC BEING: Dope Jams 3 Year Anniversary 12" (DJ 808EP)
"More untried sounds from esteemed producer Hieroglyphic Being, who offers two of his most gap-bridging electronic compositions to date on this exclusive 12" release commemorating Dope Jams' 3rd Anniversary, strictly limited to100 hand-numbered copies. While much of dance music today becomes increasingly enslaved to the conservative measure based repetition of normative dance music, 'The Future Shock' & 'The Universe We Reside in {Anti-Matter}' add to Hieroglyphic Being's reputation as a producer completely outside of 4-4 conventionality, synthesizing a totally new attitude to house & techno's experimental potentials. Harboring a punk rock conceptual freedom & utter disregard for the norm, these tracks prove once again the unparalleled abilities of Jamal Moss' creative mind, his refusal to operate on the same plane as most of his peers and his ultimate commitment to the uncultivated future of his -- and our -- beloved medium. With the continued efforts of this & similar depth, electronic music continues to be pushed forward beyond the pale of functional dance orthodoxy, and towards the truly artistic vitality it has and should naturally enjoy."

ESPVALL & MASAKI BATOH, HELENA: Overloaded Ark CD (DC 388CD)
"Further along the path of musical friendship that Helena Espvall and Masaki Batoh have discovered for themselves, we find Overloaded Ark ready to sail. And indeed, a new and better society might be provided for with all that they've packed on board. These are end times, we are told. Often, though, the craft of Espvall & Batoh drifts through placid waters. In the distance, thunderheads raise up and lightning flashes. When the storms finally come raging, they blow through -- and, singular in purpose under skies of shifting color, the intrepid ark sails onward. Espvall & Batoh have come prepared for anything, armed with acoustic and electric guitars, cello, renaissance harp, organ, sho, banjo, electronics, recorders, piano, hurdy gurdy, frame drums and several more obscure instruments such as auschpfeife, crumhorn, cornamuse, darbuka, and rig. Listen for them! But look them up first, so you know what you're listening for. There are vocals as well, sung mostly by Helena but also with Batoh's empathetic support. They are backed by two of Batoh's Ghost-mates, Kazuo Ogino and Junzo Tateiwa, and joined by ancient music specialist Haruo Kondo. As on the first Espvall & Batoh album, Overloaded Ark features a trove of traditional and ancient music alongside self-composed explorations. Songs from many cultures and ages are in evidence, from Scandinavian folk to German madrigal to French and Italian medieval court dances and even a good old Latin hymn! Nearer our present day, 'Sueno Con Serpientes' is a cautionary tale from the legendary Cuban protest singer Silvio Rodriguez, and 'Sham No Umi' is a Batoh solo piece from the mid-'90s. Espvall & Batoh endeavor to combine sounds from different times in history with an eye towards the creation of a peaceful new global village in the world of today. And indeed, Overloaded Ark is a gentle and expansive trip, fusing the sounds of east and west, new world and old into a new epic for all nations. Charted with grace and skill, Overloaded Ark is a human record, its passions focused under a stoic, enduring exterior."

SIC ALPS: A Long Way Around To A Shortcut 2LP (DC 400LP)
"Ever shrouded, serpentine by design, the legend of the Sic Alps has at last made its way to the gates of Drag City. The new, first-time-ever-on-vinyl 2xLP reissue of A Long Way Around To A Shortcut is somehow a 'greatest hits' of the golden not-quite-decade of Sic Alps. Well, not quite golden, either. Can gold be tarnished? Can it be done on purpose? If so, Sic Alps are artisans of the highest order -- for their music is the bright, surging sound of ye olde rock and roll radio (and the garages that tuned in), but heard through air darkened with specks of nameless obstruction. In and amongst their ingrown sounds, Sic Alps take on classic tunes from Strapping Fieldhands, Throbbing Gristle and The Zipps on A Long Way Around To A Shortcut. It is to their credit that they completely absorb their estimated predecessors and create the only sound left to them: the sound of the Sic Alps. A Long Way Around To A Shortcut was issued as a CD in 2008. It collected songs that were first issued throughout the epic years of 2006 and 2007 on two 12"EPs, three 7" singles and a cassette, plus a song from a compilation CD-R and a song released nowhere else but on the ALWATAS compilation. The records were originally given titles like United, Strawberry Guillotine, Semi- Streets, Hip-Hop Sweepers Vol 1, Teenage Alps, The Soft Tour in Rough Form-- but all these original releases are long gone, and the CDs fairly much OOP as well. Can this vinyl version be far behind? The hordes are coming, so heed well and get your own copi(es) in stock now." With full color innersleeves.

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE: Luminous Night CD (DC 409CD)
"Through dark days and glowing nights, Six Organs of Admittance continues to step to the far rim of the world with purposeful strides. Indeed, new horizons are visible throughout Luminous Night. Be it in the face of spiritual crisis or catharsis, Ben Chasny as Six Organs refuses to stagnate, or to evolve in predictable fashion; in response, he keeps moving on. This is the first Six Organs of Admittance albums with such a lengthy gap between it and its former number. In the past two years Chasny has kept busy writing this new epic, moving house to Seattle, composing soundtracks for novels and movies, and touring constantly in America and Europe (with bands like The Dead C and OM) as well as being invited by legendary post-metal group Neurosis to play their Beyond The Pale festival in Belgium. Six Organs of Admittance is such a singular experience that it is sometimes easy to forget that Ben was the lead guitarist in Comets On Fire, as well as a songwriter and guitarist for Current 93's Black Ships Ate The Sky album and half of the pan-Pacific psych-folk duo August Born. But clearly, Chasny knows heavy, having grown through times of heavy and times of light. And in answer to the question what's heavier, a pound of rock or a pound of feathers, Six Organs of Admittance has devised this for Luminous Night: a pound of rock covered with a pound of feathers -- twice as heavy, but feathery light to the human eye. With Luminous Night, Chasny's working with some heavy dudes, like producer Randall Dunn and Eyvind Kang, whose sound on viola shines with a guiding glow throughout the album (both Dunn and Kang contributed their talents to the outré arrangements of the recent Sunn O))) album). The other invaluable contributors to the album are Hans Teuber on flute, Tor Dietrichson on tabla, Matt Chamberlin on drums, and Dave Abramson on percussion. Occupying their spots with care, they've collaborated to create something rich and vibrant, aching and new, in the world of Six Organs of Admittance. The arc of Luminous Night is wide as the sky, commencing with a stirring instrumental evocation of the Greek myth of poor Actaeon before flowing into the vocal, the vengeful, the ancient, the divine and celestial, scored with guitars, bass, viola, flute, tabla, electronics and synthesizer, as well as a buried-in-the-rain-soaked-earth-of- Seattle-then-exhumed four-track cassette that formed the basis of the instrumental 'Cover Your Wounds With the Sky.' For its blanketing sound, Luminous Night draws inspiration from such cinematic sources as Jodorowky's El Topo soundtrack and the scores of Kurosawa's samurai films, but is at the same time music that could only have come from the singular sound world of Six Organs of Admittance. What is it about the man that buries his sound in the ground? He has faith in the earth, for one. When we think of Six Organs of Admittance, we think of a man with six-string ambitions, a rambler with mystic beliefs and dark electric visions. It's a big universe and we're only human, which basically means that we've got spirit and that we're going to die. But until then, we live. Six Organs of Admittance has lived to tell about it on Luminous Night."

The original LP, together with The Beat Boys LP, is today one of the most wanted records for the garage collectors. Unfortunately the original album have a problem in the sound. The singles included track like 'Bye Bye My Darling Goodbye,' 'Down Down Down' and the powerful cover of the Stones', 'Paint It Black (Pintada de Preto).' Os Baobás were one of the most important bands in São Paulo's garage rock scene of the sixties, but they have remained in obscurity until now, despite their not so limited discography. The band is best remembered for having included Liminha (later on a Mutantes member and a producer) in its line-up and having played with Caetano Veloso, replacing the Beat Boys. SMITH, STEVEN R.: Cities LP (IMMUNE 005LP)
"American multi-instrumentalist Steven R. Smith has been releasing a steady stream of solo records for well over a decade as well as playing in various improvisational groups including Thuja, Hala Strana, and most recently Ulaan Khol. This music has ranged from sparse solo guitar improvisations to Hala Strana's reworkings of Eastern European traditional folk tunes to the dense, psychedelic fuzz guitar workouts of Ulaan Khol. On his latest full-length solo release, Cities, Smith combines the composed with the improvisational and the result is a beautiful and desolate collection of songs evoking a crumbling landscape reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road or the films of Hungarian director Béla Tarr. Cities was recorded in Smith's Worstward Studios on all analog equipment and features a wide variety of instrumentation including fretted spike fiddle, baritone psaltery, electric and nylon stringed guitars, cello, melodica, electric piano and organ. Musically, Smith's work over the years could be summed up as a struggle to contain a series of opposites: light and darkness, sorrow and joy, despair and hope. It is this balance, or at least the effort to create or maintain this balance, that informs Cities as well. Smith has recorded for numerous labels including Important Records, Catsup Plate, Soft Abuse, Emperor Jones, Last Visible Dog, Jewelled Antler, Digitalis and Darla. Cities is his first release for Immune Recordings."

"Yes were formed in summer of 1968 in London by vocalist Jon Anderson and bassist Chris Squire, and with the addition of guitarist Peter Banks, drummer Bill Bruford and organist Tony Kay, the band became Yes. Their eponymous debut was released the following year, and the vocal harmonies of Anderson and Squire and early progressive sound made them an immediate success. In 1970 the band released their second album, the somewhat less successful A Time And A Word, backed by a full orchestra. During this period the band also made a number of live appearances for BBC radio where, given the freedom of a less formal setting, the performances have a more spontaneous, less structured sound than on many of their studio recordings from the same period. Although most Yes fans would cite the early seventies as the band's most classic period, these early recordings give listeners a glimpse of what led up to that classic sound that so defined the progressive era and is the only live release to feature the original Yes line-up. Also featuring liner notes by guitarist Peter Banks who over saw the original 1998 release of these recordings. Includes an amazing version of 'Every Little Thing' plus dramatic cover versions of the Beatles and Stephen Stills, and the rare Yes original -- and previously unreleased -- 'For Everyone.'"

VELOSO, CAETANO: Revolução (1968-1972) 4LP BOX (LR 403LP)
"The albums that brought in a new era called Tropicalia, a 1960s musical and political movement that sought to bring bossa nova into the future with the help of acid-fuelled psychedelia and political protest lyrics -- all this through the hearts and guitars of a few left-wing student protesters/musicians based in Rio De Janeiro -- including a young musician named Caetano. His musical protests soon got the attention of Brazil's military dictator, causing him to be thrown into jail and eventually forcing him to leave the country for a brief period, but by that time the Tropicalia movement had already exploded and the groundwork for much of contemporary Brazilian music had already been laid. The four albums collected here: Tropicalia, Irene, A Little More Blue and Araçá Azul straddle this tumultuous time in Caetano's life, with A Little More Blue being recorded while he was in exile in England. Caetano fortunately soon returned home in triumph, going on to become one of the most significant singer / songwriters of the 20th century."

MAMMUT: Mammut LP (LHC 077LP)
"Originally released in 1971, this album is an intense and bombastic hybrid between heavy fuzz acid guitar, instinctive free rock improvisations and some lyrical, classical influenced interludes/fragments. Mammut played in an impressive and convincing manner their conception of an psychedelic rock opera. For that each title includes the name Mammut. The opening track 'Bird Mammut' is a groovy, percussive, crazy psychedelic affair featuring an avalanche of drums, trippy organs, bluesy e-guitar and wistful flute passages. 'Classical Mammut' delivers a short piano interlude, a pleasant melodic moment. 'Mammut Ecstasy' is a fuzzy heavy psychedelic composition with furious rhythms, an efficient bass guitar leading theme and some nice keyboard moves. 'Foot Machine Mammut' alternates a bluesy pop song with free guitar jams accompanied by Hammond organ. Perhaps parts of the first Embryo album are comparable to this. 'Nähgarn Mammut" is their attempt to be more lyrical and melodic, while the album closes with 14 minutes of 'Mammut Opera,' which show Mammut at their best. Dark sounds with hints of Amon Düül II, heavy blues rock with all sorts of strange, ethnic and gothic touches combined in their music. Altough the band themselves quoted Deep Purple in rock as a major influence, their spirit was purely Krautrock. Their sole album is a legendary rarity. Comes with 1 bonus track, comprehensive insert, digitally remastered. A classic! Don´t miss it!"

PAPA ZOOT BAND: Last Concert CD (LHC 078CD)
"Great lost band from Frankfurt, Germany. In 1973/1974, Papa Zoot Band played all over Germany, mainly in clubs but also on festivals (German Pop Meeting 1st and 2nd February 1974 in Essen, Grugahalle). Lutz Sommer guitar, Robby Matthes bass, voc, Reinhard 'Tammy' Grohe organ(Ex-Nosferatu !) and Christian Engel drums, voc. played mainly long tracks, very melodic but also with a sense of drama comparable to Nektar, Eloy, Jane or Pink Floyd. Outstanding 20 minutes title 'Fly away' could be a long track by Pink Floyd of the Meddle/Wish You Were Here/Animals-era without being an imitation. The other two long tracks 'I Wish' (9 minutes) and 'Friendship or Love' (11 minutes) also show throughout fantastic guitar and organ work (as you know it from Nosferatu album). Unbelievable that Papa Zoot Band never made an album. 4 years after they called it a day, Papa Zoot Band played in early 1978 a sole reunion concert at there basic venue 'Sinkkasten' in Frankfurt. This concert, which had the same playlist as their performance on German Pop Meeting 1974, proved again, that their music never lost its magic. This great performance was taped from the soundboard and has a superb sound quality. As bonus tracks there are two cover versions of a great Eric Burdon song 'When I was Young' in a 9 minutes psychedelic version and the classic 'Tobacco Road' with former bandleader and great singer Ernst Nadler (nickname: Papa Zoot) who left Papa Zoot Band in early 1973. CD comes with comprehensive booklet, photos from their performance at the German Pop Meeting, 1974 (a. o. with Guru Guru, Kraan, Nektar, Eloy). Digitally remastered. "Julien 'Lecube' Barbagallo was born to Sicilian immigrant parents in the pastoral landscape of Tarn in France's South-West, where he still lives. His first EP My Bungalow (Barbabungalow) marked the beginning of his solo project, Lecube, and lent him mythical status via the only French magazine which got hold of it, Magic (French equivalent of Mojo). With a simple 8-track machine and a few intimate songs, he began telling the stories he held close to his chest, a fragile combination of glances and breathes, collected randomly on local buses and unmade beds. In the spring of 2004 he began to record new material, on his friend Benjamin's staircase, a collection of songs which were to become From Here To Now' stories where women he'd love to love meet men he'd love to be, and vice versa. These recordings remained on the stairs until Julien played a local party Qwhere he met Stephane Bismuth, Megaphone Music (The Strands, Angil, Karen Dalton), who convinced him to release his new songs initially as a series of 7". Those tracks drew comparisons to amongst others, The Monochrome Set, Neutral Milk Hotel, Bob Dylan, Syd Barrett, The Byrds, Elliott Smith and Howe Gelb."

FIELDS, SCOTT: Samuel CD (NW 80695CD)
"Scott Fields's (b. 1955) Samuel, the second album of compositions based on Beckett's plays, follows 2007's highly acclaimed Beckett. One could argue though that Fields's compositions are in fact closer to the original texts than most other Beckett-inspired musical works, for the simple reason that the Chicago-born guitarist and composer actually derives his music directly from them, not only by assigning precise pitches, chords, time values and rhythms to particular words and phrases in the text and transforming Beckett's wordplay into clearly delineated melodic lines and harmonic fields, but also by associating his meticulous stage and lighting directions with particular sounds and gestures. It's no coincidence that Scott Fields has so far chosen to work with Beckett's plays, rather than his prose or poetry, since a sense of character and identity -- or loss thereof -- is as central to his music as it is to Beckett's dramaturgy."

FINAL: Reading All The Right Signals Wrong CD (NOQ 018CD)
"Justin Broadrick has always made music which could one day serve as a soundtrack to the end of the world, should we ever need one. Whether with Godflesh or Jesu -- themes of urban decay, corporate greed and post-modern malaise often set the bleak tone. Final, his longest running project, is no different. Formed in 1982, it has often run parallel to his more recognizable work and served as an undefinable and more experimental outlet." Features four tracks not on the LP version.

NUMERO GROUP:
24-CARAT BLACK: Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday LP (NUMERO 025LP)
Gatefold LP version. "An era was finding its end. Union Planters National Bank had finally pulled up the roots of Stax Records, leaving hundreds of musicians locked out of 926 East McLemore and the Chicago chapter of 24-Carat Black on the hook for months spent in the studio. Their debut album, a commercial and financial disaster, was par for the course during Al Bell's reign as the Memphis label's head. Rediscovered in the early '90s by Britain's rare groove scene, Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth has since been known as 24-Carat Black's first and final chapter, barely a footnote in the well documented history of Stax. Dale Warren's brainchild band simply pushed past their concept's conclusion, piling up dozens of reels for an intimate follow-up album that no one in the world wanted to hear. With their ambitious LP downgraded to cutout status when Stax finally shuttered in 1975, 24-Carat Black found themselves watching their moment recede in the rearview. In his post-Ghetto work, Dale Warren had clearly aimed for a complete reinvention, of both his band and his songwriting past. Of more than 20 songs he considered for the 24-Carat Black follow-up, we've refurbished the six that hadn't flaked off their reels. Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday is by no means a sequel to Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth. Missing are the poignant and bleak sermons on the pain of inner-city existence, replaced by dusky, sensuous re-workings of love songs Warren had written as far back as 1965. Wildly divergent in tone, scope, and mission, the second 24-Carat Black album is tethered to the first by a single, crucial element: its creator."

LUCID DREAM (JOHN TEJADA): Recovered Data 95 CD (PHTH 052CD)
"House and techno music producer John Tejada's newest album project, Recovered Data 1995, is released under the name Lucid Dream as the second in Phthalo Records' Phthalo Origins series and is, as the Origins name implies, actually Tejada's very first full length, recorded back in 1995. The aggressively melodic album was recorded as a conscious, focused effort to get Tejada's music heard by other artists and DJs. And, of course, it worked: the result was a deal with now defunct A13 Records, with whom Tejada released two Lucid Dream singles and a full length album called Pure Punk. Recovered Data 1995, however, was in many ways the original version of that album. The original title was slated to be Palette, a name which electronic music aficionados will recognize as the name Tejada later used for his own record label, which started in 1996. But by the time Tejada was ready to release this album, A13 had changed direction towards a more club type style, asking Tejada to make new tracks. As a result, all of these tracks went unused, save for the album's first track, 'Grip,' which wound up being released on the Lucid Dream single Pot Hole in 1996. None of the others have seen the light of day since. John Tejada's thoughts on Recovered Data 1995: 'While digitizing old DAT tapes recently, I rediscovered this release which still holds a special place for me. I've always regretted the fact that with so many releases since, this one had yet to see the light of day. Back then it was a special time for making music. The tools were limiting, forcing you to be creative. There were no plug in synths or DAW workstations. No one I knew had a cell phone or even an email account yet. There were no MP3s or music blogs; so we didn't download, we drove to the record store to get new music and magazines to catch up on the global scene. It was quite a different time -- a time I really miss because of the undivided attention I could give my writing process. The result was a very personal work I am still proud of fourteen years later.'"

PAINTING PETALS ON PLANET GHOST: Haru No Omoi CD (PSF 190CD)
Haru No Omoi is the third full length release from Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, the project of My Cat Is An Alien's Maurizio and Roberto Opalio featuring Ramona Ponzini (Black Magic Disco, Praxinoscope) on vocals. The MCIAA duo provide expertly restrained accompaniment with guitar, keyboard, and percussion of the spacious gong/cymbal/bell variety to create a minimalist realm for Ponzini's Japanese singing and spoken word that is all together captivating. This is an album of sparse, hypnotic folk and subtle drone, but it inhabits a galaxy containing a warmth and richness in detail quite unlike anything else the Opalios have laid their hands on. Track two, 'Sakura No Hana No Oto Ga Kikoeru,' is a variation (or maybe the same exact version?) of the same song featured on the band's stunning 2005 self-titled debut release on Time-Lag. Housed in a heavy mini-gatefold sleeve. "Every track recorded in a different mystic location of the Western Alps, Piedmont, Italy between winter 2004, early fall 2006 and January 2009."

A Bumpkin's Empty Bravado (Japanese title: Inakamono no karagenki) is Tomokawa's first completely solo album in fifteen years and a triumphant return to full-voiced form after his recent illness. Stripped of his usual backing band, there's a crystalline hardness evident in the best of Tomokawa's songs here -- a hard, blazing core in which mellifluous lyricism and eruptions of highly individual madness are fused. Lyrically there's a new focus on Akita, the northern prefecture of his birth, as well as on the linkages between visual and musical art. Nine tracks; thirty-five minutes. VA: We're Gonna Change The World! CD (SC 11209CD)
Subtitled: The 60's Chicago Garage Sound of Quill Productions. "During the peak years of the '60s garage band wave, Pete Wright was one of the nation's top independent record promotion men. His records were not only hits on Chicago's crucially important WLS but also in small markets throughout the Midwest. Whether in the Windy City or in these smaller outposts, he was tipped off to tons of untapped local talent. So much so that launching a record label was the next logical step. Thus was born Quill Records, a short-lived but supremely cool label heavily indebted to the garage band sound. This definitive overview collects only the most rockin' sides from the label; from the Malibu's who manage to outdo their idols the Animals, at least in pure unbridled energy, to the Skunks who, on their overdriven, fuzzed-out cover of 'Do the Duck' could be mistaken for a UK mod/freakbeat act. And that's just for starters in a set of teen rave-ups from the likes of the Delights, the Commons, Ltd., Chances R, the Riddles and more. If the appearance of the Don Caron Orchestra in the track listing causes serious head scratching amongst the more discerning of you garage connoisseurs, well, we couldn't help ourselves. Their 'Hot Pastrami' may be the most scorching sax 'n' reverb instrumental you'll hear all year. This set also includes rare photos, label scans and extensive liner notes (with interviews from both Pete Wright and many of the bands)." Limited numbered edition of 1000 copies.

BLOOMFIELD, AL KOOPER, STEPHEN STILLS, MIKE: Super Session LP (SC 5275LP)
"This historic 1968 summit meeting features three of the era's greatest musical talents: blues guitar hero extraordinaire Mike Bloomfield, multi-talented keyboard visionary Al Kooper and Buffalo Springfield/CSNY founder and ace axeman Stephen Stills. After achieving prominence for his work as a member of the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat and Tears, and for his role in Bob Dylan's transition to electric rock, Kooper hit upon the idea of cutting a rock album using the same approach that was the standard method for jazz recordings: 'Pick a leader or two co-leaders, hire appropriate sidemen, pick some tunes, make some up and record an entire album on the fly in one or two days.' The project grew into Super Session, which combines a side of live-in-the-studio performances by Kooper and Bloomfield and a side featuring Kooper and Stephen Stills. Instrumental support was provided by bassist Harvey Brooks and keyboardist Barry Goldberg, both of the Electric Flag, and veteran session drummer Eddie Hoh. Super Session proved to be both a commercial smash and a seminal influence, becoming the biggest-selling release of Bloomfield's career and inspiring countless other artists to attempt similar studio-jam recording projects. Out of print on vinyl for more than two decades, Super Session has been meticulously restored for this LP reissue, using Sundazed's usual exacting standards. The album is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl, and features the original cover art reproduced in its entirety."

BLOOMFIELD & AL KOOPER, MIKE: The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper 2LP (SC 5276LP)
"In the wake of the success of their seminal 1968 Super Session album, blues-steeped guitar hero Mike Bloomfield (formerly of the Butterfield Blues Band and the Electric Flag) and multi-talented keyboardist/singer Al Kooper (ex-Blues Project and Blood, Sweat and Tears) teamed up again for a historic series of joint performances at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore West, which are documented on The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. The resulting live album, culled from three nights' worth of shows and released in 1969, is a powerful testament to the formidable musical chemistry of these two rock legends, whose collaboration began when they played on Bob Dylan's classic Highway 61 Revisited. The Fillmore performances bring out the best in both musicians, who stretch out on an assortment of tunes, including the Kooper/Bloomfield original 'Her Holy Modal Highness,' Paul Simon's 'The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)' (with Simon adding vocal harmonies), the Elvis Presley standard 'That's All Right,' The Band's 'The Weight,' Booker T. and the MGs' 'Green Onions' and Albert King's 'Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong,' which features a rare Bloomfield vocal. The album also features guest appearances by Elvin Bishop and Carlos Santana. Unavailable in its original format for decades, The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper has been meticulously restored to its original double-LP form for this vinyl reissue, using Sundazed's exacting technical and aesthetic standards. SPIRIT: Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus LP (SC 5277LP)
"Although they never achieved the commercial superstardom that was often predicted for them, Spirit remains one of the most revered and influential musical forces of the late 1960s. Perhaps more than any American band, Spirit embodied the era's adventurous eclecticism and creative ambition. Combining the experimental attitude of psychedelia with jazz, blues, R&B, folk and classical elements, Spirit's original lineup burned briefly but brightly to produce some of the most distinctive music of its time. Spirit's 1970 classic Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (produced by longtime Neil Young collaborator David Briggs) is widely acknowledged as the band's magnum opus. The fourth and final collaboration by the band's classic original lineup of Randy California, Jay Ferguson, Mark Andes, John Locke and Ed Cassidy, the 12-song album reflects the quintet's one-of-a-kind mix of talents and personalities. Spirit's unique musical vision is reflected in their trademark hit 'Nature's Way,' which remains a staple of classic-rock radio, along with such Spirit favorites as 'Prelude-Nothin' to Hide,' 'Animal Zoo,' 'Mr. Skin' and 'Morning Will Come,' which mix sonic experimentation and vivid lyrical imagery with catchy melodic craft. Out of print on vinyl for more than two decades, Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus has been meticulously restored to its original two-sided glory for this LP reissue, using Sundazed's usual exacting standards. STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK, THE: Incense And Peppermints LP (SC 5308LP)
"The Strawberry Alarm Clock made musical history with its first single, the infectious, psychedelic 'Incense and Peppermints,' which topped the national singles charts in December 1967 and remains one of the Aquarian Age's most enduring anthems. But, as the California combo's debut LP demonstrates, there was a lot more to the Strawberry Alarm Clock than their iconic trademark hit. Like its namesake hit, Incense and Peppermints combines catchy melodic flights with an edgy progressive sensibility that manifests itself in the trippy soundscapes, sophisticated harmonies and evocative lyrics of such memorable tracks as 'The World's on Fire,' 'Birds in My Tree,' 'Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow' and 'Paxton's Back Street Carnival.' The result is a surprise-filled collection that All Music Guide called 'one of the more delightful artifacts of the psychedelic era, a strangely compelling mix of psychedelia, sunshine pop, garage rock, and California harmony.' VAGUSNERVE: Lo Pan CD (UR 028CD)
"The lo pan is an ancient, intricate compass used in the practice of traditional Chinese feng shui and is sometimes referred to as 'the universe on a plate.' A lo pan consists of two parts - a square wooden base into which is fitted a freely rotating saucer-shaped disk. In the centre of the disk is a small depression containing a magnetized needle. Between the needle and the edge of the disk are engraved several concentric rings, each divided into sectors containing different sets of Chinese characters. The relationship between this physical object and the music you hear on this album was inspired by a dream that Li Jianhong (guitar) had in June 2006. In his dream he came to a clearing in a dark forest which contained a huge lo pan, as big as a table. Convinced that the device could provide a way to summon UFOs, he lay down on the lo pan and began to rotate around the various symbols on the concentric rings. As he did so, a vast array of UFOs appeared above the forest. For Li Jianhong then, the lo pan represents a form of ancient knowledge that can be used to unlock the secrets of the universe. His collaborator in VagusNerve, Vavabond (laptop), reads the lo pan in a slightly different way. For her, it is a device which can be used to discover a balance between the individual and the cosmos, by aligning personal energy with the cosmic. This idea of balance runs through the music as it pulses, shifts and resonates freely, seeking to create and then destroy structures of equilibrium. Photography by Vavabond. Typography and drawing by Li Jianhong. Text by Alan Cummings. Edition of 500."

HORSEBACK: The Invisible Mountain CD (UR 039CD)
"As Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain was a satire of the western approach to personal enlightenment and self-actualization, Horseback's The Invisible Mountain is a work composed as a means to channel the self-destructive tendencies of its maker Jenks Miller. The channeling process has required a functionally solipsistic worldview based on the efficacy of individual will in ascertaining its specific reality. This worldview, in turn, has caused a sort of fissure between social consciousness and individual consciousness. In specific, the invisible mountain is an abstraction of the God-self in this whole process, a tenuous and ever-collapsing fabrication that perpetuates the individual psyche amidst processes that would otherwise destroy it or steal its creative power. The mountain itself is false: existing only to the individual as he climbs toward self-realization, and unknowable in any external reality; but it is as necessary as it is false. Without the fabrication, individual reality would crumble and one would be stripped of creative power. The record itself is based on repetitive guitar riffs and drum patterns similar to mantras in meditation, blackened vocals referencing the uncomfortable tension between one's quest for transcendence and their unresolved relationship with the rest of society The tracks are devices to help maintain discipline in an attempt to conquer. The last track breaks from the mantras into a less rigorously controlled wash of sound. Liberation. Pressed with black ink on a black translucent paper sleeve. All white inserts with poster. Illustration by Denis Kostromitin. Edition of 500."

VLASMAN, TON: White Room With Disintegrating Walls LP (LPS 065LP)
"Ton Vlasman recorded this amazing piece of acid Euro folk back in 1970, making it sound like an outer space freaked out Bob Dylan with the help of Frans Schoonen (organ, flute and harmonica) and Leo van Vugt (chincha tumba and tambourine). The seven original compositions are stunning, drug inspired psychedelic pieces of acid folk that mix Dylan with Indian ragas and even add some Pink Floyd overtones, yet from an acoustic rather than electric point of view. And the album contains also a very cool version of The Velvet Underground's 'Pale Blue Eyes.' If you ever wondered how Dylan would have sounded covering The V.U., here's a close example! The album, originally released on the small Flame label from Amsterdam, sold poorly back in the seventies -- thus becoming a collector's piece when it was rediscovered in the eighties. Since then it has been gathering new fans that pay small fortunes for a copy, no reissue has been available until now that Wah Wah offers 500 copies in a lavish edition that will probably sell out soon, so grab your copy before it's too late! ORANGE WEDGE: No One Left But Me LP (LPS 067LP)
"The 1976 follow up to Wedge was No One Left But Me. Due to the lack of offers the Orange Wedge also released their second LP as a private pressing that was to be sold at gigs and local shops, and it sold like hot bread making this one an elusive piece among hard rock collectors. Their sound here is still 100% high energy, though an evolution has been made and the band sounds a bit more sophisticated. It was their best selling album at the time with a pressing of 1000 copies that hardly made it out of Baltimore, so here's a very good chance to rediscover this amazing piece of pure rock power. LIGHTMAN, AARON: Aaron Lightman LP (WDLX 003LP)
"This amazing LP from 1969 is one of the most beautiful hidden gems in the field of pop arranged singer-songwriters. Originally issued on Poppy Records, home of psych heads The Mandrake Memorial among others, Lightman's LP deserves to be discovered by all the fans of the soft rock, orchestra arranged sounds. Think of an American reply to the early works of Duncan Browne, Bill Fay, Nick Garrie or even Donovan at his most popsike recordings. Fans of the early Bee Gees will also enjoy this LP! Credit for the arrangements and production goes to the great Ron Frangipane and David Christopher, who is also credited as a co-writer of the albums songs. The album came housed in a beautiful Milton Glaser sleeve (Glaser was the main designer at Poppy at that time) which the Wah Wah reissue respects, and featured an insert with the lyrics which is also reproduced on our reissue. VARESE/MORTON FELDMAN, EDGARD: Amériques/Piece For Four Pianos - Five Pianos CD (WER 6708)
Performed by Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo & Friends. "Amériques -- a symbol of renewal, adventure, and discovery -- is a symphonic eruption that earned a place in the twentieth century's list of famous scandals at its premiere. The version on this CD for two pianos, eight hands featuring the Bugallo-Williams Duo introduces the musical world to a work of extreme pianistic virtuosity, both delicate and ecstatic, a work whose wild activity could not be more different from the almost motionless introspection of the Feldman pieces. As Feldman said, 'Instead of inventing a system like Schoenberg, Varèse invented a music that speaks to us with its incredible tenacity rather than its methodology. When listening to Varèse, we ask ourselves, 'How did he do it?' and not 'How was it done?''"

STRAWBERRY WINDOW: Strawberry Window LP + 7" (RFR 031LP)
"Strawberry Window hailed from the San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay music scene in the mid '60s and were truly one of the 'early birds' and innovators who made their own distinct brand of rock-n-roll. They played in a heavy-psychedelic-garage style, sounding somewhat reminiscent of the Jefferson Airplane, (early) Mad River, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Frumious Bandersnatch. These previously unreleased recordings have survived for the last four decades in a box on a shelf in a band member's closet. Meticulous care and detail has been taken to master these recordings with a fresh, open approach, while ensuring that the sound and integrity of the vintage songs remained intact. The amazing music of this guitar based quartet ranges from catchy electric folk tunes and 'West Coast' garage rock to raw energetic acid jams lasting over 10 minutes. You'll be impressed by the (stereo) sound quality throughout their ten original cuts not to mention their freaky live version of J D Loudermilk's 'Tobacco Road.' It's an out right shame that this talented bunch were not signed to a record deal back then. (In 1968 they switched guitar players, added a girl singer and changed their name to the Dandelion Wine and recorded several songs and also released a private pressing of a 4 song 7 inch EP.) World In Sound presents for the first time ever, the music of and the history behind this talented group of songwriters and wild performers known as the Strawberry Window. The LP-version will be 180g vinyl, handmade extra heavy sleeve, poster and a 3-track 7" EP, in total 60 minutes of intense but melodic performances that will take you on a trip back to the halcyon days of the Summer of Love. Discover it, it's truly a masterpiece from the roots of the legendary SF-Sound!"

"Following on the heels of their grammy Award-winning work with the Klezmatics, vocalists Susan McKeown and Lor in Sklamberg present Saints & Tzadiks -- a fascinating album combining Yiddish and Irish songs. Culled from rare archive material and old recordings, McKeown and Sklamberg have selected songs on various themes from the Jewish and Irish traditions: love, death, betrothal, betrayal and the demon drink. The bulk of the Jewish material is drawn from the Ruth Rubin Archive at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, where Sklamberg serves as Sound Archivist. The Irish songs come from both the popular and the ancient Gaelic sean nós traditions. Susan McKeown has recorded ten albums of original and world music and built an impressive career through her many releases, extensive touring and performances on programs such as A Prairie Home Companion, All Things Considered, Mountain Stage and for PBS, Sessions at West 54th and American Masters. Her World Village album Sweet Liberty was nominated for a BBC Folk Music Award. Lorin Sklamberg has been the lead singer of the Jewish American roots band the Klezmatics since its founding in 1986."

DIMINISHED MEN: Shadow Instrumentals LP (ABD 044LP)
Seattle's Diminished Men present a full-length record for the Abduction label. This LP is a limited edition of 500 copies and comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl. "If current instrumental music was always as majestic and compelling as this, I'd hang up my retro-Italian soundtrack collector's boots for good. From the explosive drums rolls on the opening track, the only cover on the record, "L'Appel du Vere," from Roman Polanski's The Tenant (music by Philippe Sarde), to the darkly exotic finale, "A Housewife's Dram," this album is a superbly crafted mosaic of whip-cracking vengeance, speak-easy hallucinations and haunted geography. Besides the Italian-Western overtones, the carnival-esque freakshow backdrops, Korshid-Egyptian guitar passages, and flipped-out electronic space-psych, are perhaps the best surf-inspired tracks I've heard in years. It's spine-chilling how producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Eyvind Kang, Sun City Girls, Secret Chiefs 3, Six Organs Of Admittance, Wayne Horvitz, Matt Chamberlain, Grails, Wolves In The Throne Room, etc.) managed to make this record the ultimate mid-'60s surf-vampire-Western revival soundtrack. Elements of Joe Meek's best Moontrekkers productions cross with a dash of Badalamenti murder blues-drama, setting the stage for Steve Schmitt's cobra-twilight guitar work and the outlaw drums of Dave Abramson to leave their indelible stains across this 41-minute epic journey." --Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls)

BARTLETT, DAREN: O Zelador: A Story Of Capoeira DVD (BAN 001DVD)
Shot in Brazil over a five-year period, O Zelador ("The Caretaker") explores the life of Master Russo who lives with his family in the intimidating Baixada Fulminese neighborhood. At an early age, Russo discovered the value of capoeira: the music, physical agility, self-defense, and philosophy of this Afro-Brazilian cultural manifestation helped Russo endure a life fraught with poverty and danger. Master Russo was part of a group of youths who created the now-famous capoeira street roda ("circle") of Caxias, located in Rio de Janeiro's tough suburbs. This traditional manifestation of capoeira has passed through three decades, including Brazil's difficult military dictatorship years, emerging today as a unique example of Afro-Brazilian culture. UK director Daren Bartlett's intelligent and lovingly-crafted documentary is an intimate portrait of Russo, his wife and sons, and his loyal group of students who offer willing testimony to the fact that Russo's love, knowledge, and guidance have been an inspiration. A remarkable and engaging individual, Bartlett also uses Russo's life and work to detail capoeira's wider place within Brazilian culture and political history, a place ably supported by expert use of a wealth of archive footage. World premiered at the São Paulo International Film Festival, this is a fascinating and stirring work. This is a Region-free NTSC DVD, for North America. DVD extras include a director's commentary, interviews, extra capoeira scenes, and a booklet. Running time: 84 minutes. Language: Portuguese with English subtitles. Aspect ratio: 4:3 full frame.

NEUMANN & ONUR OZER, TOBI: Green & Blue - Tobi Neumann & Onur Özer In The Mix 2CD (CORMIX 025CD)
The Cocoon label presents the second edition of the mix CD associated with the Green & Blue Open Air festival in Obertschausen near Frankfurt, Germany, mixed by veteran DJs Tobi Neumann and Onur Özer. Taking place every year on the first weekend in September, Cocoon-head Sven Väth and his crew transform the festival grounds into a dream of green meadows, blue water, lots of trees and light installations, laser shows, fireworks, and, above all, music from the best artists that the electronic music scene has to offer. In 2009, the two mixed CDs are manned by two DJs who are able to draw upon both long-time experience and innovation in sound: Tobi Neumann and Onur Özer. On these two CDs (each DJ is responsible for one mix), the two excellent turntable artists -- who, as a team are also known as Sensitiva -- give an outline of the most current and the hottest techno and tech-house tracks. They don't rely on big names and safe hits only, but also produce some real pearls out of their record case again and again. Besides names like Reboot, Matthias Kaden, Sascha Dive, Tolga Fidan and Daze Maxim, one can also find the young Romanian Dan Andrei, who presents his first international release on the Frankfurt imprint Be Chosen, after having released several records on Arpiar earlier. Also Cécille Records is represented with both well-established artists, such as Reboot, and promising new talents such as the young Italian Leon. Besides his brand-new track "Mare Maris," Onur Özer has also included jewels like Taron Trekka's "Radio Fligg," which has been praised by the German magazine de:bug as "funky, slamming, wide and perfect." In short: an extremely appropriate soundtrack for the party, reflecting the summery green and cerulean blue of this utopian, future-forward festival. Other artists include: John Daly, Cally, Precious System, Solomun & Jackmate, Shlomi Aber & Kenny Larkin, William Kouam Djoko, Samuel Davis, Nina Kraviz, Kenny Hawks & Louise Caver, Mirko Loko, Liovizna, Livio & Roby, Anonym, Super Flu, 95th North, Moodymanc, DJ Wild, and Caretaker.

ARNALDS, OLAFUR: Found Songs CD (ERATP 017CD)
In April 2009, Iceland's neo-classical export Ólafur Arnalds created the 7-song series Found Songs -- recording a song a day for 7 days and instantly making each track available via Twitter. With artwork contributions from fans via Flickr, this modern release awakens memories of a tradition that seemed lost in the digital age we live in. Born in 1987, Ólafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsbær, just a few kilometres outside of Reykjavík. He has immersed himself completely in a world of delicate symphonic compositions generating near weightless orchestral pieces. Arnalds explores the crossover from classical to pop by mixing chamber strings and piano with discreet electronics which makes him a perfect fit for cinematic pop label Erased Tapes. This young artist has been steadily gaining recognition worldwide since his 2007 debut Eulogy for Evolution (ERATP 004CD). The 2008 follow-up EP Variations of Static earned Ólafur acclaim from both the contemporary and classical field -- transcending a traditional divide by uniting their ideals. After filling London's world-famous Barbican Hall, fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós invited Ólafur to open some of their European shows, playing to an audience of over 5,000 per night. In anticipation of another full-length release, Ólafur conceived Found Songs as a way to collate several lost-and-found musical sketches and ideas in a "very challenging, but fun" series. The experiment offers its listeners an intimate insight into Ólafur Arnalds' creative world. The songs are different from Arnalds' previous output -- comprised mostly of shorter piano suites and electronics-embellished, string-led ruminations -- and so far, more than 70,000 people downloaded the Found Songs series via foundsongs.erasedtapes.com. Each track inspired a wealth of artwork from his fans -- submitted via Flickr. Hosting this project on their official web site, Erased Tapes Records watched the collaboration between Arnalds and his online audience flourish, and found it fitting to combine the music and artwork into one complete work. This is a limited edition, re-mastered physical release, available on CD and in a 10" vinyl version.

CROOKERS: I Love Techno 2009 CD (LL 006CD)
Following Boys Noize's turn on 2008's I Love Techno mix, I Love Techno 2009 features the talents and tastes of insanely-hot Italian DJ duo, Crookers. The hot fuss surrounding Crookers is about to reach fever pitch. Already the hippest act in dance circles, they will soon unleash their debut album on the world and things are expected to go mad for the two men from Milan. Their remix of Kid Cudi's "Day 'N' Nite" reached number two in the UK and is now riding high on the U.S. airplay charts. Their already huge body of work has attracted the attention of big names such as Kanye West and Will. I. Am who have become fans and collaborators. Dolce & Gabbana recently used their U2 "Get Your Boots On" remix for the catwalk and their MySpace page is getting more traffic than Coldplay's. Crookers started in 2003 when DJs Phra and Bot met and paired up over a shared love of hip-hop, house and the emerging skewed, bass-heavy sounds pioneered by Switch in the UK and Diplo in the States, and also of quality house like Moodymann and Theo Parrish. It's from these combined influences that Crookers derive their hybrid sound. Their first release End 2 End, was released in 2006, but it was with the Knobbers EP, for their current label Southern Fried, when they really made an impact. There's footage on YouTube of their appearance at I Love Techno in 2008, with 10,000 people singing the riff to "Knobbers." Crookers usher in 2009's I Love Techno at the Flanders Expo in Ghent with an incredible mix of tracks by Zomby, Harvard Bass, Fever Ray, Osborne, Untold, Jahcoozi, Oliver $, Photek, Jesse Rose, Nadastrom, Brodinski & Mumdance, Nic Sarno, Metronomy, Micachu, Jack Beats, Ku-Bo, Noob & Brodinski, Deepgroove, Emvee, Rustie, Zinc, and Skream.

This is Cobra Killer's fifth full-length studio album. Cobra Killer are Gina V. D'Orio and Annika Line Trost. Both have played in bands in the former West Berlin since the age of 12/13. They formed Cobra Killer in January of 1998, touring through Europe and revolutionizing the then-boring electronic music scene with their raucous show. In 2002, they took Australia and New Zealand by storm, supporting Peaches on various shows, including the Big Day Out Festival. Shortly afterwards, they were also a support act for Sonic Youth, who were very impressed by the Cobra movement. Recently, they have wowed capacity crowds supporting big names such as Marilyn Manson and Jon Spencer, who also guests on two tracks on this album. Uppers And Downers sees Cobra Killer sounding as defiant and as unpredictable as ever. Recorded in part at Einstürzende Neubauten's andereBaustelle studio in Berlin, and featuring appearances by other such special guests such as J. Mascis and Thurston Moore, the record is a roller-coaster ride that sees the band pushing the limits and again going way beyond expectations to deliver an album that's sure to please their many fans. Bodymovin is the partnership of DJ Friction (of the hugely popular German band Freundeskreis), and DJ Thomilla (the well-known hip-hop DJ and producer, also one-half of Turntablerocker with Michael Beck). After much success individually, and eventual touring together with their various different projects, the pair got together as a DJ double act, and so Bodymovin was born. The album is richly decorated with lovingly-played analog synth vibes, funked-out bass lines, irresistible vocal hooks and an unending supply of tight, club-friendly beats. All this is tied together by subtle, lovingly-sequenced arrangements that lock the listener in, yet surprise them with a constant forward-moving energy that presents raw musical ideas in a more digestible context. This is a real amalgam of modern electronic, effortlessly appealing to fans across the spectrum. There are 12 tracks featured here, each with their own voice, mode and vision -- they are all irresistible, essential cuts -- and it's clear to hear the high quality, instinctive songwriting skills of the duo right from the introduction bars of "Yeah!." Melding electronic disco, modern dancefloor beats and ultra-catchy synth lines a-plenty, tracks like their single hits "Good Time" or "Everybody," "In & Out" or their trademark "B.O.D.Y.M.O.V.I.N." shake the system upside-down. This is a remarkably accomplished album literally bursting at the seams with fresh musical ideas, catchy, unforgettable hooks, and up-front dancefloor energy. Welcome to the space-disco-tech-house-song-writing world of Bodymovin.

MUM: Prophecies and Reversed Memories 10" (MORR 093EP)
In conjunction with múm's fifth album, Morr Music releases Prophecies and Reversed Memories: a 10" that contains one album track and two songs exclusive to this release. "Prophecies..." features a naive and overly-sweet chorus that gets more and more euphoric with its repetition, while "Amen Flutes" is an eccentric and strange pop song that builds up a glorious mess of sounds. To close, "Krippling" is a careful, fragile and heart-warming ballad that shows the band's adult side.

VOODEUX: The Paranormal CD (MSHIP 019CD)
3x12" version previously released on Mothership, now available on CD with an extra track, "Skeleton Key." This is the debut full-length release by Boston/Philly duo Voodeux. Two years ago, on the East Coast of America, a couple of highly technical production wizards joined forces and created their own genre of strange and creepy techno under the moniker, Voodeux. Tanner Ross and James Watts first released The Curse EP on Mothership in 2008 with great success. With DJ support rolling in from everywhere, Claude VonStroke soon commissioned them to record a full-length album of this new moody sound. The Paranormal is a concentrated vision of myth and mysterious beats, exploring the eerie afterlife side of techno like no other artists have done to date. It is a 10-track vision of ghosts and goblins hiding in the closet (or lurking in the dark corners of the dancefloor), ready to scare the daylights out of you. Using dark funk, ghoulish atmospheres, quizzical beats, growling, ominous vocal stabs and futuristic production, Voodeux is staking their claim as the next generation of American techno. The Paranormal is Halloween on wax, and a minimal techno masterwork for the modern underworld.

This is Marcel Fengler's third 12" -- quality over quantity. The title track infuses a dirty Chicago sound with a house swing and a dry sense of humor. "Gridlock" has already earned the label "Berghain-approved" -- a heavy, atmospheric track that builds dense tension. "Chi Twine" experiments with broken rhythms and the artist's hip-hop past by fusing electro beats with techno qualities, making for an atmospheric, sci-fi track for the wee hours.

VA: Piccadilly Sunshine Part One: British Pop Psych And ... CD (PAPR 2107CD)
Other Flavours 1968-1970. Before expert compiler Psychomania found a limited amount of fame and even less of a fortune curating the widely-respected Electric Asylum series, he cut his musical molars on the little-known Piccadilly Sunshine series (most tracks were originally released on the Desiree label in 2003), which took the wide-eyed aficionado into the deep and wondrous valleys of British pop music culture. Daring to bring forth the once-overlooked and sadly-neglected songs that were laid to waste in a saturated wonderland of suburban teenage pop, Psychomania asks the listener to join him as he tiptoes barefoot through the late '60s and early '70s in Great Britain's vast and glorious cultural wastepaper basket. Stepping amongst the 20 flower-powered trippers presented here, they have been lovingly restored to their former glory. FAR EAST FAMILY BAND: Nipponjin CD (ASH 3009CD)
Regarded by many as the first Japanese progressive rock group, the Far East Family Band featured the keyboardist and future new age composer, Kitaro. A keyboard-dominated space rock band, the Far East Family Band played extended compositions that brought comparisons to Tangerine Dream and early Pink Floyd. Nipponjin (1975), the band's second album under their new name (the trio changed their name from Far Out to Far East Family Band following the release of Nihonjin which appeared on the Denon label in 1973), featured re-recorded material from the previous The Cave Down To Earth (1974) as well as Nihonjin and was produced by Tangerine Dream's Klaus Schultz. The band's synthesizer-drenched sound had much to do with Kitaro and Schultz meeting during a trip to Europe. One of Japan's earliest prog bands, Far East Family Band became hugely popular in Japan and also achieved considerable attention in Europe. The group went on to release two further albums, Parallel World (1976) and Tenkujin (1977), but it is Kitaro who enjoyed lasting fame for his legendary Silk Road albums. Digitally remastered, numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies only in a unique card wallet.

VHS HEAD: Video Club CD (SKALD 023CD)
Skam presents Blackpool, UK recording artist, VHS Head. VHS Head began making music in 1999. Using video tape as the primary sound source and '80s B-movies as his inspiration, this music is a collage of vocals, stuttering guitars and drum hits taken from a vast amount of ex-rental videos, teleporting the listener back to the golden era of the VHS format. Summons almost epileptic memory-recall of every single cheesy, synth-driven '80s-movie opening/ending credit sequence you've ever heard, spliced and mashed and cut together into one percussive, glitchy, retro mind-fuck. KOLETZKI, OLIVER: Großstadtmärchen CD (SVT 037CD)
This is Berlin-based techno/house DJ/producer Oliver Koletzki's highly-anticipated second album for Stil Vor Talent. Großstadtmärchen is an electronic album of the finest proportions, and finds the artist fully committed to his roots, which can be traced back to the pop music of the '80s and '90s, while still transporting the fresh energy of today's electronic music productions. Also featured on this record are a wide variety of contributors: Mieze Katz from the German electro-pop outfit MIA, the hot German pop-rock-singer Axel Bosse, critically-acclaimed indie band Kate Mosh, as well as newcomers like Fran, Pyur and Juli Holz. The result is 10 songs that easily fluctuate between catchy pop tracks, modern house grooves and '80s synthesizer pop, while still maintaining the Koletzkieske sound dynamic. "This Is Leisure" is based around Mieze Katz's sexy voice and a seductive guitar song-pattern. "Zuckerwatte" is a very fine electro-pop tune, and "Kusskompatibel" and "Warschauer Straße" harken to the artist's first years in Berlin and his love for house music. "Hypnotized" is a great, shining bright light of pop music that has already made massive waves in Germany. "Headshaped Box" encapsulates what indietronic sounds like in the year 2009: symphonic, melodic and simply unique, and "These Habits" is a downbeat, trip-hop groove, featuring the wonderful vocals of 17 year-old Pyur. Last up is a bonus track: Oliver Koletzki remixes "Nimm Mich Mit" by the electronic boy-band Die Raketen. Oliver Koletzki is not your average techno producer. His productions and his sense for original music also have a deep rooting within pop culture. Thus, Großstadtmärchen is the logical consequence from two decades of intense musical production. Here comes a mature, yet still playful pop album that manages to combine many different influences into one harmonious oeuvre.

QUELLET, ISRAEL: Soni Sclavus CD (SR 262CD)
Electro-acoustic out-sound experimentician Israël Quellet was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland in 1972, and this is his second release for the Sub Rosa label -- the fifth volume in their Musics in the Margin series. At 16 years-old, the artist discovered sound-worlds such as Miles Davis' electric era, Sun Ra, dub, German cosmic music, Magma, Zappa, and many more. In 1997, he stepped into the musical fray and, following the advice of a sound engineer friend, bought microphones, a digital mixing board, and studio monitors, turning part of his basement into a soundsmithing studio. That is when he started to create, out of his immediate surroundings, soundworks that have little to do with what is "normally" being done. Appreciated by Ecuadoran electro-acoustic composer Jorge E. Campos, Quellet is supported by the Centre Pierre Schaeffer in Paris. This second work for Sub Rosa explores common objects and the problem of saturation and noise. The artist explains in his own words: "I made the sounds while I was recording, either alone or with the help of my wife. Once a piece has been edited together, the final mixing is performed live, without automation. In order to retain the original dynamics, I do not use compression or any other specific mastering technique designed to equalize the sound or spatialize the stereo image. However, the heavy saturation used in some pieces limits the range of dynamics. The diverse sounds and the diverse means used to capture them give each piece a different overall sound and stereo image. Therefore, the pieces are not standardized or calibrated systematically; they do not all sound the same."

SATIE, ERIK: 42 Vexations (1893) CD (SR 294CD)
Erik Satie's 1893 Vexations; performed by pianist Stephane Ginsburgh. This piece is musique d'ameublement -- literally, "furniture music," the phrase coined by Satie in 1917, where he identifies sound as drapes, tiling, wallpaper -- items belonging to the environment and changing it simply by being in it, by actually becoming elements of the space. This recording is the second installment in a series of furniture music (after Marcel Duchamp's Musical Erratum), and is unique in that it calls for 840 repetitions of a single motif. John Cale recalls a particularly grueling 1963 performance under the direction of John Cage: "Between 9 and 10 September 1963, I was one of a relay team of pianists, under the direction of John Cage, who played Vexations by Eric Satie at Pocket Theatre, 100 Third Avenue near 13th Street, in 18 hours and 40 minutes. The 180 notes of this 80-second work were played 840 times. The whole thing was John Cage's idea. The admission was $5, but members of the audience got a refund of five cents per 20 minutes, and those who stayed to the bitter end got a 20 cent bonus." Had Satie envisioned playing the piece? Who knows. Neither do we know if Duchamp's Erratum musical was meant to be executed. What can be said, however, is that when played in its entirety, Vexations inevitably becomes a performance for both players and listeners. An experience in repetition -- repetition without the slightest variation, except for the unavoidable tempo shifts that occur over such a lengthy performance, alterations in how the piano keys are hit, in other words, everything that falls within the realm of the mechanically involuntary. What would you say about a ritornello that lasts between 18 and 24 hours? Includes a 16-page booklet containing the essay "Cage's Place In The Reception Of Satie" by Matthew Shlomowitz.

DOWNPILOT: They Kind Of Shine CD (TR 166CD)
This is the third full-length album by multi-instrumentalist Paul Hiraga aka Downpilot. Downpilot has given the music world two albums of lush and atmospheric pop in collaboration with producer Tucker Martine (R.E.M., The Decemberists, Laura Veirs), with influences as diverse as Americana rock, ambient electronica and jazz. Their first full-length album, Leaving Not Arriving, garnered shining reviews from Rolling Stone, Harp, No Depression, amongst others, and their 2006 follow-up, Like You Believe It, was named "Best Local Album of the Year" by Seattle's influential arts weekly The Stranger. Always curious and looking for new ways to express his musical vision, Hiraga delved into the technical world of classic studio electronics in order to actually construct wire-by-wire most of the vintage-based analog recording gear that would soon capture the sounds on the album he subsequently produced for The Wedding Present bassist Terry de Castro (A Casa Verde). Hiraga's multi-instrumental musicianship and engineering artistry (as well as contributing two songs) have since earned praise in the UK (8/10 stars in NME). This new audio laboratory was then put to work in the creation and recording of They Kind Of Shine. Drawing some individualistic inspiration from the first Paul McCartney solo albums (on which the former Beatle played nearly every instrument himself), Hiraga embarked on a private studio exploration that has many songs performed entirely by himself on acoustic/electric/lap steel guitars, drums and percussion, acoustic and electric piano, humming old Farfisas and Hammonds and creaky old pump organs, with an occasional banjo and ukulele thrown in for flavor. Long-time band mate Jeff Brown contributes rich background vocal support, and cameos by former Posies drummer Mike Musburger, pedal steel master Maggie Bjorklund and Tucker Martine contribute to the remarkably cohesive band sound. The result is a rich acoustic-electric-chamber-pop-roots-Americana-rock-country album that doesn't really hold on to any of those simplistic labels, but is completely timeless. Soaring, accomplished singer/songwritership imbued with rich harmonies and alt. country swagger.

DINKY: Anemik CD (WAG 056CD)
This is Dinky's fourth studio album. Following up on her unanimously-acclaimed album May Be Later (VA 003CD/024LP), Chilean artist and Berlin transplant Alejandra Iglesias conceived Anemik entirely for the Wagon Repair label after being approached by label head Mathew Jonson. A musing on femininity and the fine line between romance and delirium, Anemik transcends borders in its range of influence and reflects consciousness in the fluidity and tangibly live origins of its creation. Recorded using analog equipment and acoustic instruments with a strong emphasis on voice, there is a wisdom and maturity to this work. Opener "Childish" builds from meditative beginnings with looped synth, wandering pads and wildfire percussive cycles that concoct a deep and dreamy landscape. "Romaniks" creates space between electronic and acoustic spheres with Latin-soaked beats encircling a subdued kick. Mantric vocal chants inject a mystical dimension into the affair, its psychedelic overtones continuing into "Westoid," where Dinky's vocal lament is complimented by the baritone accents of Los Updates' enigmatic Jorge Gonzáles. "Goldfishes" bubbles into being with processed choral scales, while "Rainfallic" is a mid-tempo trip of lazy legato harmonies and epic Telecaster drones. "Anemik" is a restless electronic frenzy, with melodic and percussive elements feuding amidst staccato vocals, effervescent machine transmissions and a penetrating central kick. "Glacial" opens with reverberant vocals and deep percussion that swims through murky pads and delayed keys. "Ceramik" weaves a tight beat, with warm Rhodes accompaniment, live percussion and ramped vocal passages. Thumbed melodic patterns and sonorous key stabs characterize "Glassik," while "Skyped" intertwines grandiose processed chorals, deep metallic percussion and leveling pads. The infectious, arpeggiated melodies of "Epilepsia" are invigorated by live Latin percussion, "Fadik" is a wonky love song set to cascading beats, strummed guitar and electronic emissions, and "Nocturnal" unsettles with moribund ambient shivers to complete the kaleidoscopic range of flavors and emotions offered by this remarkable record. At times dreamy, at times nightmarish, at times romantic, at times befuddled, Anemik is always quintessentially Dinky.

VAMPIRES OF DARTMOORE, THE: Dracula's Music Cabinet CD (BMS 015CD)
"You couldn't script it. You are nineteen minutes and twenty-two seconds in to your peak-season cruise around the Kraut-schlock peripheries. To say the trip has been an eventful one would be an understatement -- you don't know what to expect next and your 12" x 12" Germanic tour guide has proved quite unreliable thus far. As your diamond tipped vessel maneuvers through the grooves of your 9th horrific attraction (entitled 'The Soaked Body') the soundtrack awkwardly becomes background music and you are overcome with the sound of gushing water. 'Help!' you think sarcastically, the music, or is that muzak, is drowning! This is the movie soundtrack to a film that never existed. This is the movie soundtrack by the band that was never requested. These were the sound library musicians who had to invent their own clients and imaginary cast, crew and plot to get their music heard, by a niche audience, before floating deep into the depths of the rare record reservoir gasping for breath. To take a cinematic cue the record in question is the euro-trash-pop equivalent of Jean Renoirs' tragic / triumphant Boudu character who as a homeless, confused and desolate down-and-out plunged to the depths to be unwillingly rescued, resuscitated then after gradually winning the hearts of an entire family becomes respected and revered as royalty. Over 20 years after the mad scientists, Dr. Horst and Ackermann, first breathed life into this short-lived beast, brave and intrepid vinyl explorers have sporadically returned to the doors of Dracula's Music Cabinet to resurrect the sonic spooks and mutated melodies to share with nerds, mods, rockers, hip-hoppers, psych-nuts and Kraut-siders alike. The lifeless corpses of The Vampires Of Dartmoore that lay six feet beneath the belly of the 'Eins Deutschmark' bins has since crept through the record collections of the aforementioned social circles devouring continental currencies and demanding random ransoms of 200 Euros plus sweat, tears (of laughter) and a lot of blood."

VA: Science Fiction Dance Party (Dance With Action) CD (BMS 016CD)
"Finders Keepers is proud to present the mythical follow up to Heribert Thusek and Horst Ackermann's horror cash-in album Dracula's Music Cabinet. Back in 1968 a pair of Germanic behind-the-scenes sound librarians called Horst Ackermann and Heribert Thusek left a tiny, but indelible, pinprick on the history of German pop in the misshaped form of a sexy horror cash-in concept album called Dracula's Music Cabinet. Shelved at a micro-cosmic axis where Krautrock meets lesbian vampire horrortica and easy listening meets psychedelia the delayed reaction of this mutant concoction eventually exploded in the mid 1990s in the hands of a generation of 'record diggers' sending currency-crushing tremors through the wallets of mods, rockers, hip-hoppers, psych-nuts and kraut-kompletists around the plastic pillaging planet. The vinyl junkies had resurrected a monster, but, like addicts do, they ravenously sucked it dry and moved on looking for the next fix to feed their habit. Luckily for some, Ackermann and Thusek were also creatures of habit. And it wouldn't take a genius to figure out that they were holding the next dose, but by the turn of the millennium the mad scientists had been given a 35-year head start on the pop-archeologists and their mythical sequel was literally light-years ahead of their previous draconian installment. Encouragingly the unclosed cabinet left a shiny white clue in the form of its closing track 'Frankenstein Meets Alpha 7.' Perhaps space was the place. Always read the label. The Ackermann and Thusek duo were far from dynamic. They were undercover agents hiding behind user-friendly mock-rock monikers and, like most BMusicians, the only way to sniff them out would be to read the small print. But when an unidentified record on an unknown label with a title like Science Fiction Dance Party crops up in the 'Eins Deutschmark' crates it's not exactly rocket science -- although the track titles might suggest otherwise. 'The End Of A Robot,' 'Monster On Saturn 1,' 'Galactic Adventures Of The Outer Space Fleet ,' 'The Whistling Astronauts,' 'Death Rays Out Of The Universe.' The telltale signs are all there and if that vintage psycoplasmodic coloured vinyl doesn't clench the deal then what will. When rumours about a space-age follow-up to Dracula's Music Cabinet hit the straße Deutsche-o-phile diggers fingers started twitching nervously."

BREAK NEW SOIL (GERMANY):
THRESHER, GREGOR: The Life Wire Pt. 1 12" (BNS 004EP)
"With his debut longplayer A Thousand Nights from 2007 Gregor Tresher undoubtedly upgraded himself into the Champions League of European techno artists, with the title song being the year´s best selling techno song on Beatport. And also the following releases on labels like Josh Wink´s Ovum or Dubfire´s Sci +Tec made it into the playlists of almost every big name DJ around the world. Now Gregor has taken the next step and presents a foretaste of his upcoming second album. The title track once more is 'another paradigm of Gregor´s talent of creating epic techno tracks with enigmatic harmonies to make them true anthems of the night' (Groove Magazine, #117). Gregor is working with classic sounding filtered synthesizer-lines, and when the bassline finally kicks in, we can already see everyone´s hands in the air. The second track 'Escape To Amsterdam' is a techno track par excellence, made by a DJ for the DJs, going down a storm everywhere Gregor is playing it out. It´s no wonder that Dutch Techno-Don Dylan Hermelijn aka 2000 And One picked it for remixing already. And finally, on the B-Side, we have the first remix for the Life Wire Project, and with Petar Dundov it is one of the first artists on Gregor's wishlist of remixers for the album. With his recent releases the Croatian has impressively shown his talent of creating the most amazing melodies and once more, his remix leaves nothing to be desired: His 'Petar Dundov Variation' is an incredibly beautiful piece of music, that will ignite open air floors over the summer, and we are extremely happy with this first interpretation of Gregor´s track."

As we like to say it's a 'timeless techno' tune, an open air magik track with vibrant pads full of synthetic feelings and processed voice that reminds the best moments of the disco from the '80s or, if you prefer, as our friends at Kompakt, you can define it: elegant techno."

PARASITES OF THE WESTERN WORLD, THE: The Parasites Of The Western World LP (DESTIJL 072LP)
"The Parasites Of The Western World are a band from Portland OR who released their recorded debut in 1978. It's a fascinating spin, a galactic ramble across the otherworldly themes of alienation and paranoia, seemingly inspired by LSD and Philip Dick. Primarily the creation of Patrick Burke and Terry Censky, the Parasites were limitless with invention and completely DIY. This is a record that was recorded in an apartment, by a crew thoughtful enough to curtail its loud excursions for the daylight hours. Its rockist moves are surprisingly informed by the typical institutions of this era : Pink Floyd, the Beatles and Hawkwind and it's many electronic flourishes are an above ground sound that would presage the likes of Vertical Slit, F/I and Vertigo. The Parasites remain to be light years ahead of a time that has yet to come. This swank, one time vinyl pressing of 1000 copies will contain a digital download coupon so you'll be pleased if that's yr thing."

HATZLER: Disquos 12" (DIEBAUDIO 010EP)
"We are proud to present Mr. Mathias Hatting aka Hatzler (as he's more commonly known) to our loyal and devoted Dieb-ophiles as well as the world at large. Dropping a massive double a-sided EP containing 'Disquos' and 'HNO,' this talented and inventive producer has been making a solid name for himself with his fresh, glitchy and minimal brand of techno infusing heavily effected electronic hooks with undeniably funky rhythm sections! First up on remix duties, Gary beck tackles 'Disquos' and delivers a dark and pounding re-interpretation. Fans of his work on labels such as Minus and Soma will already be familiar with his particular style of production-solid, precise and guaranteed to work magic on a variety of dancefloors! Completing off the package with style and panache, the very much in form Lemos adds a quirky yet housey splash from his own production palette and reworks 'HNO' into a chunky and gritty tech house shuffle. Here, he uses one of the original's main hooks as a focal point and constructs a simple, yet characteristically groovy drum arrangement dominated by swinging shakers and carefully placed percussive elements. Another standout addition to our humble little catalogue, we are delighted to add such a forward thinking and polished bow to our sonic arsenal."

Like from Audiofly, who loved it so much, that they did an edit, which will now get its proper release. A brilliant work by simply adding some bits and pieces to the groove which now makes it 10 times more effective and easier to play. Additionally, wonderboy Ramon Tapia found a great way of fusing parts of the original organ with a big bassline and pushing percussions. Looking forward for Ramon's album in winter 2009."

IT'S ALL MEAT: It's All Meat CD (GTR 131CD)
"It's All Meat were a late 60s/early 70s band that hailed from Toronto and released this excellent album in 1970 (Columbia). Prior to that, It's All Meat had been known as The Underworld. The Underworld released a superb, crude garage single ('Go Away'/'Bound' -- the label is Regency) in 1968 and also recorded some fine unreleased material captured on acetate. As mentioned before, some of the members of The Underworld would form It's All Meat. In 1969 this new group would release their debut 45, 'Feel It' coupled with 'I Need Some Kind of Definitive Commitment.' The A-side combined MC5 energy with New York Dolls-style swagger and features plenty of feedback and great guitar breaks. It's one of the great proto-punkers. Their album was released the following year and featured 8 fresh original numbers written by drummer Rick McKIM and keyboard player/lead vocalist Jed MacKAY. There are a bunch of good, solid stonesy garage rockers that form the axis of this lp: 'Make Some Use Of Your Friends,' 'Roll My Own,' 'You Brought Me Back To My Senses,' and 'You Don't Know The Time You Waste.' The latter track would be released as the group's second and final single but 'Roll My Own' and 'Make Some Use Of Your Friends' were just as good, featuring fine psychedelic guitar work and raw vocals. Other note worthy tracks flirted with blues ('Self-Confessed Lover') and folk-rock ('If Only') but the lp's brightest moments were its two 9-minute marathon compositions. 'Crying Into A Deep Lake' was full-blown Doors psychedelia with spacey keyboards and spooky Jim Morrison influenced vocals. The other lengthy track, 'Sunday Love,' sounds like a strange Lou Reed/John Cale concoction with lots a great psychedelic guitar noise and soft folk-like passages sprinkled with light garage keyboards. So while these last two tracks are very long, they never wear out their welcome and are required listening for both garage and psych fans. The album's production teeters between a primitive recording sound and the typical major label gloss, making it just right. It's All Meat is a fine, consistent trip all the way thru. It's one of the best late period (really late) garage rock albums I know of. The album's hard rock and proto-punk sounds give it a nice, visceral edge." Bonus tracks include 6 unreleased tracks and demos (1969-1971) and their first single "Feel It."

PERE UBU: Long Live Père Ubu! CD (HR 149CD)
"Released by Hearthan, and exclusively marketed in North America by Smog Veil, Long Live Père Ubu! is the album of songs that was the genesis of the entire mess. It is a great leap forward in our pursuit of hyper-naturalistic recording techniques by which we replace microphones in the studio with wooden boxes, junked radio speakers, metal horns, and electrically charged window panes. Sound itself becomes the narrative. Everyone is going to hate it. We know that. The story, though satiric and comedic, is utterly bleak, lacking charm (the usual counter-weight to the band's noire tendencies) and devoid of redemption. Few people have ever read Ubu Roi, fewer heard of it. Wonderful. Altogether two years of work. Père Ubu, the character, ruined Jarry's life. And now he's ruined our career. This thing is our Waterloo, our Bridge Too Far, our Pickett's Charge. Well, somebody had to do it."

DENT, LOREN: Anthropology Vol. 1 CD (INFX 034CD)
"It's as if Dent had returned, irrevocably altered, from an ambitious and expansive field trip through nothing less than the history of digital and analogue ambience to splice his findings with the DNA of late-modernist classical. Loren Dent's intent is no radical re-think of genre; his bent is more recontextual, a fine tension between the vectors of New Music, minimalism, ambient, post-rock and space music. It's a trajectory traversing considerable terrain. Opener, 'Introduction - Dreams and Concrete,' for example, moves from Feldman to Niblock, before picking up on Pärt, in the transition to 'This Thing We Enjoy,' where the borders of melancholia are skirted, and a quiet glow is flirted with, before abandoning itself to a swooping digi-orchestralism and fibrillating fizz closer to the Kranky oeuvre of Tim Hecker and Christopher Bissonnette on 'Another Rural Fantasy' and 'Winter During Wartime.' The parade of references is by way of a rough guide, but the music of Anthropology is more maximalist in its articulation, more sweeping in its scale than all the aforementioned, with great gushes of tonalism surging through the soundfield. And those influences are dissolved, becoming trace elements in a blend of welling and swollen symphonics wrestling with pop ambient pointillism, all couched by Dent in his own tones." -- a. lockett

MIJ: Yodeling Astrologer LP (JPR 7105LP)
"Yodeling Astrologer (aka: Color By The Number) could be considered an anomaly, a one-off or a miracle of circumstance in the history of psychedelic pop music. Mij, a.k.a. Jim Holmberg was discovered by ESP owners while playing in Washington Square Park in the summer of 1968. His style and persona mesmerized the label heads, and he explained to them a recent auto accident had fractured his skull but left him changed. He perceived sound, color and vision differently and he had funneled this new world of perception directly into his music. All this was enough to warrant getting Mij into the studio to lay down a record of his rambly, cosmic folk songs. The entire album was recorded in three hours, first-takes and impromptu production intact, then pressed up and introduced to the world shortly thereafter. To focus on the yodeling aspect of the Yodeling Astrologer would miss some of the depth of this album. Not just a hippie novelty act of the time, this is a truly thoughtful and somewhat frenzied document. Like Buffy St. Marie's Meditations, Linda Perhacs' Parallelograms or Cold Fact by Rodriguez, this is an album of sincere folk songs colored with subtle psychedelic touches. Uneasy reverberations and soft echoes glide over Holmberg's breezy songs, creating a consistent sonic environment as spontaneous as it is intriguing. Available on vinyl for the first time since an incredibly limited original pressing in 1969 on ESP Disk."

MARTINEZ, SEUIL, MATTHIAS TANZMANN: Moon Harbour Joints Vol. 1 12" (MHR 045EP)
"In the last few months two faces have caused a massive stir at Moon Harbour HQ, the frenchman Seuil and Martinez from Copenhagen. And to take that momentum a step further, after their recent sets alongside Matthias Tanzmann at the monthly Moon Harbour Flights at the Distillery in Leipzig, Tanzmann invited them back to his nearby studio for what ended up being a very fruitful couple of recording sessions. And the fruits of these collaborations are here for you all as two very special tracks on the split EP "Moon Harbour Joints Vol. 1", each track combining the artists' unique personal styles while at the same time giving us more than the sum of the parts. The A-side is Martinez and Matthias Tanzmann rolling out a compactly arranged track, named "Ohh I don't know", which is characterised by percussive and impulsive beats, a rythmic chord and engaging vocal samples, all adding to make a unique funk -- direct, authentic and deep. Tanzmann and Seuil's "My 808 gently weeps" also builds on and emphasises several layered vocal samples. The result this time is a deeper and more laid back affair, which will undoubtedly become the perfect soundtrack to many an after-party that has stretched long into the shining new day."

BYRNE, ANDREW: White Bone Country CD (NW 80696CD)
Performed by Stephen Gosling (piano) and David Shively, (percussion). "Andrew Byrne (b. 1966) has lived and worked mostly in New York since the early 1990s. This tripartite CD has a mobile-like character, working entirely with a fabric of piano and metal percussion in changing manners and images, all of them remote from the duo relationship of conventional chamber music. The central work 'Tracks' is also the earliest one (composed 1998, revised 2006), and presents the solo piano in its most 'normal' sound and interaction with the player -- a kind of journey, as the title suggests, within a dense and accumulating polyrhythmic expression. The two surrounding groups of pieces extend from this in two different directions -- the opening 'White Bone Country' (2006) towards reduced sound-reveries in processed piano and small metal percussion, the succeeding 'Mirages' (2007) into pure sonic fantasies made from sampled sounds of prepared piano. Byrne relates these pieces to 'the other American experimental tradition of Cowell, Harrison, Peter Garland, John Luther Adams, rather than the New York minimalists/post-minimalists -- to their concerns with polyrhythms in a reduced meditative sound world, suggestions of strange folk musics, depiction of landscape...' Fundamental to the language of all Byrne's pieces are pulsations, from which varied melodic motives and overlaid rhythmic meters can be drawn. In this respect his approach differs from other landscape-orientated music based on drones and evolving fields of sound, along with their opposite, flurries of irregular disjunct rhythms."

"Between 1975-1977 Chicago's South Side night clubs were a little lighter. Not just because of a lanky white guy skulking about, but rather because of the camera and strobe light he carried. Michael Abramson hit Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, The Patio Lounge, and The Showcase Lounge, not to capture the artists on stage, instead popping off a half dozen rolls every night on the crowd. Light: On The South Side gathers for the first time over 100 of these images, as Numero shines its own strobe on yet another dark corner of the past. The 132-page hard back book features photos, an ephemera section, and an essay by Nick Hornby. BLOOD STEREO: Your Snakelike King LP (PAN 005LP)
"Brand new release from Brighton mongs Blood Stereo, duo of Dylan Nyoukis and Karen Constance. Your Snake Like King picks up where 2008's The Magnetic Headache left off, a shape shifting and strange mix of tape collage, free vocals and electro-acoustic mischief. Midnight to 3am recordings fueled by grape and smoke conjour up a blurred narrative, the meaning of which is never quite clear, like weird off camera sounds in some tripped out movie. 'Anal fins tucked in tight behind them, Blood Stereo look like a pair of ill-kempt roosters, fighting over a doughnut. The guy rooster is jibbering in some unknown tongue, turning his face inside out, while shoving the microphone slowly through a hole in his cheek. The girl rooster appears to be pecking at him, either that or she's picking at various trash they have strewn around the stage. Every time she ducks her head there is the sound of a jet passing overhead. But when you look up at the sky there is no sign of a comtrail. After a while you think you are starting to get a handle on what they are doing, but the guy falls down and starts doing a spazz dance so utterly convincing you begin to worry about him. Then the girls starts screaming and it seems as though something is really profoundly wrong. And it is. But it's not like they're in any kind of trouble. They're just wrong, y'know? So savagely wrong from every angle that it's really tough to imagine there 's anything you could do to really help them. As if they'd even want in. In their masks or out, they sow confusion like wheat.' -- Byron Coley. DAS SYNTHETISCHE MISCHGEWEBE: Frequency Conquistadors LP (PAN 006LP)
"Words are more often then not the point of departure for many works of Das Synthetische Mischegewebe. The track titles here stem from 'El Mundo Alucinante' de Reinaldo Arenas, which itself is inspired by François-René de Chateaubriand's 'Mémoires d'outre-tombe'. It is about time rather than history and about being in history. Having lost the war of time, the only thing that remains to do is being, and here we go, 'being infiniment exigent' in its means of expression. DSM began in Berlin armed with a visual education from the early '80s. They quickly became part of the international industrial cassette scene. Composing for light installations with open-reel machines, cassette recorders, microphone and guitar fuzz boxes with both loud, quiet, occasionally full blast and frequently sneaking in little sounds, all alternating within a few seconds, create an electroacoustic anti-music. With unusual concerts in the underground network as well as in high art institutions and museums (such as Centre Pompidou) and later on with performances for mixed media installation, exhibitions and conferences on cognitive science and neurologic research related topics, the group toured with changing casts since the early '80s, and participated in international festivals throughout Europe and the US. Since 1982 they continue to produce vinyls, CDs and tapes on many international labels: Discos Esplendor Geometrico, RRRecords, Hypnagogia, Vinyl-on-Demand, Auf Abwegen, Harsh Reality Music, Equation Records, Das Cassetten Combinat and many others. This historical document of an early Schimpfluch Gruppe performance is an absolute must for fans of actionistic noise and performance-art. The LP is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, pressed on 140g vinyl and is packaged in a pro-press folded cover including all information and photos which itself is housed in a silk screened pvc sleeve with the whole original dokumentation of the performance. SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY):
WITCH: Introduction LP (SHAD 118LP)
"LP 500 numbered/glossy heavy sleeve/180 gram pressing. Another out-of-nowhere African '70s rock discovery in the Blo mold. Completely unknown band from Zambia, privately pressed on a small local label, this five-piece electric band plays a strong electric African underground style. Tons of wah wah-fuzz guitar in every track, African style beats and vocals and all original songs. After the successful release of the other Witch album Lazy Bones, here is Introduction. Crazy & wild Fuzz guitars all over, African beats and chanting, as good as it gets. Incredible cool and stoned album from the southern African country. Again we need to say: if you're feeling depressed, low, disturbed, out-of-sorts, sad, frustrated or widely demented, then folks, we suggest you seek out a quiet place, indulge in some soothing meditation and cut away that headache by listening to this inspirational album."

FINJARN & JENSEN: Same LP (SHAD 119LP)
"LP 500 numbered/glossy heavy sleeve/180 gram pressing/insert. Guitarist, vocalist, composer and artist, Svein Finjarn can be safely called a legend in American rock. He began playing guitar and acting before he was ten years old, and in the fall of 1961, he became the first Norwegian who played in a rock band with a fender Stratocaster. In autumn 1969 he helped put together super heavy rock group Jumbo with Freddy Lindquist, Leif Jensen and Tore Syvertsen. The group had two singles, but were dissolved during the work on their first LP. Finjarn and Jensen made the album complete with Lindquist, Arild Krosby, Arne Kvikstad and Grete Christoffersen. Yngvar Holm wrote an enthusiastic article that was published by the jacket. Briton John Mills was the producer for the album, which came out in autumn 1970, and that could be placed side by side with the hard, progressive rock from abroad. One of the coolest albums made in Scandinavia. The music follows a great underground concept and hits as strong a bands like Blossom Toes, July, Open Mind -- a real British Psychedelic flowerpower album made in Norway."

MOSES: Changes LP (SHAD 120LP)
"LP 500 numbered/glossy heavy sleeve/180 gram pressing/insert. Moses was formed in 1969 in Esbjerg, Denmark by Søren Højbjerg -- guitar / Jørgen Villadsen -- bass / Henrik Laurvig -- drums and vocal. Moses played their own heavy and punshy and stoned progressive blues. Their record Changes from 1971 has now become cult in the collectors market. By the end of 1969 the band got a contact with the independent record company Spectator Records in Denmark and in the summer 1970 they recorded the only album, Changes in 2 days in the Spectator Record Studio in Ålborg, Denmark. Finally the rarest and perhaps best album on the rare Danish Spectator label. The music is strongly influenced by the Cream and other hard psychedelic guitar bands. It took us quiet a while to get a deal together and we are happy now to close the final chapter of the Spectator story with this great release of Moses. Extra heavy fuzz-guitar madness all over with strong bass and drums and great vocals."

"New solo studio recording by Japan's reigning surrealist blues poet. Forty plus minutes of all new material recorded in France during Mikami's 2008 European tour. Numbered heavy weight vinyl only edition of 333 in handpulled screen printed sleeves. Includes lyrics in Japanese and English (title track alone is a trip through painted omelets and the moon to a rusty French bicycle). While Mikami is building up a massive body of work through his long running association with PSF records this is the first of his studio dates to be committed to vinyl in decades. Singular and essential."

RICE EXPERIENCE, THE BOYD: The Way I Feel CD (CAD 004CD)
"This is an album about feelings. Those of you who only know Boyd Rice from his rather brutish and insensitive noise music will no doubt be surprised to discover the sensitive, at times passionate individual lurking beneath his often gruff exterior. Here, Rice opens up for us. He shares how he feels about a wide range of topics, and we bet you'll be surprised just how often his thoughts and feelings mirror your own. Throughout his long and storied career Boyd Rice has collaborated with other musicians. From the leading lights of England's neo-folk underground to America's most obscure eccentrics, Denver, Colorado's favorite agent provocateur has repeatedly insinuated himself into the lives of the most interesting, the most notorious, and most memorable artists and performers, every time producing a classic song that defies easy categorization. The Way I Feelcollects the best of these tracks onto one album. Whether it's with Coil or David Tibet, Douglas P. or Tiffiny Anders, every song is special, and the atmosphere is unforgettable. The Way I Feelwas first released in the year 2000 and has never gone out of print on CD at Soleilmoon, but with the release of Hatesville imminent we decided to relaunch it."

RICE EXPERIENCE, THE BOYD: Hatesville! CD (CAD 033CD)
"Hatesville is a collection of songs by The Boyd Rice Experience, The Partridge in the Pear Tree, Adam Parfrey and Jim Goad. It was originally released in 1995, but quickly went out of print, and has until today commanded absurd prices from collectors. This new edition has been completely remastered and features three new songs. Best of all, its available for the first time on vinyl. Famed hot rod artist Coop, whose black & white artwork appeared on the 1995 version, added color to the artwork for the new edition. No expense has been spared for this reissue. The CD is presented in sturdy six-panel folder, the black vinyl LP comes in an sturdy old-school tip-on cover, and the picture disc comes in a heavy PVC sleeve. The CD is unlimited and we plan to keep it in print forever, but the black vinyl LP is limited to 1000 copies and the picture disc is limited to 500. Boyd Rice's biography is extensive and includes numerous albums, books and film appearances. His musical career began in the 1970s when he performed and recorded as NON. In the mid 1980s he became involved in the Church of Satan, and later launched a Social Darwinist think tank called The Abraxis Foundation. He has performed and recorded with Douglas Pearce of Death In June, Michael Moynihan of Blood Axis, and famed industrial percussionist Zev. His newest book No is a collection of essays. He presently lives in his underground bunker in Denver, Colorado."

FRIEDBERGER, MATTHEW: Winter Women/Holy Ghost Language School 2CD (THR 223CD)
"Matthew Friedberger is one half of the The Fiery Furnaces brother and sister duo. This is Matt's first solo record and was originally released in 2006 by 859 Recordings. Thrill Jockey is proud to be bringing this double album back in a new package with updated artwork. Matt wrote and arranged all the music, played all the instruments (except for some drumming from John McEntire of Tortoise on a few tracks), and sings all the songs! The record was co-produced by Bill Skibbe at Key Club Recording at Benton Harbor, Michigan in March of 2006. The release has two full albums worth of music -- Winter Women is a summer record of memorable, accessible, un-ironic, sixties inspired pop songs and Holy Ghost Language School is the musical equivalent of a stormy Murakami novel with the requisite sonic twists and turns which makes Matt's work so original. Both records will appeal to Furnaces fans but have a broader reach, especially Winter Women which is full of summer pop songs."

TURBO RECORDINGS:
HUGG & PEPP: Sweet Rosie 12" (TURBO 068EP)
"'Sweet Rosie' is one of the most original sounding vocal house tracks in ages. Tiga championed the first version we were sent, but he'd always mix out before the goofy guitar part, so Turbo commissioned a special edit that keeps its cool all the way to the finish line... that's why it's called the 'Turbo edit.' The Dahlbäcks threw in a terrific disco dub, one thing led to another, and we figured we ought to go the distance and do a full remix package. Veteran superproducer and perennial chart topper Sir Jori Hulkkonen does a Joriffic job, the dub being, incredibly, his 200th ever remix -- another milestone for J-Z. Also on remix duty AND also at work on an album for Turbo is Glasgow's young prodigy Sei A. Continuing on a brilliant run starting with his album 'Editing Shadows', this is an absolutely incredible deep dub, keeps things interesting for all you vocal hating bitches."

Recorded between 1960 and 1973, the original eighteen LPs that comprise this series have been highly sought after in the secondary market since 1978 when they were discontinued. These rare and historically important recordings of international avant-garde music have been carefully digitized and remastered by the Earle Brown Music Foundation. Brown was a major force in the world of contemporary classical music. He studied mathematics and engineering at Norteastern University, and attended the Schillinger House School of Music for techniques of composition and orchestration. His work with new notations, scoring methods and performance attitudes led to his development of graphic, improvisational and 'open-form' scores. LES TRIABOLIQUES: Rivermudtwilight CD (WORLD 468088)
"Les Triaboliques are full of surprises, but the biggest of all is that it took this long to happen. rivermudtwilight, the breathtaking collaboration from multi-instrumentalists Ben Mandelson, Lu Edmonds and Justin Adams is the culmination of a decades-long, indefatigable quest by these voracious visionaries to absorb and utilize the planet's panoply of sound. Having exercised their skills individually within numerous diverse settings, it was perhaps inevitable that this 'meeting of the ancient guild of post-punk, Anglo, globetrotting string players reveling in idiosyncrasy,' as Adams describes it, would eventually come to fruition. The album comprises eleven exquisitely rendered tracks -- most composed by the British trio -- that employ a battery of conventional and exotic instruments, multilingual vocals and a seamless merger of international influences. These diablos of dusk-core offer new distressed string band music for the 21st Century. The Desert, the Delta, the Steppes and the Underground -- all are united in what Mandelson likes to call 'Triabolique Twi-Fi.'"
