LUNCH & ROWLAND S. HOWARD, LYDIA: Shotgun Wedding LP (BANG 138LP)
Repressed. Bang! Records present a reissue of Lydia Lunch and Rowland S. Howard's Shotgun Wedding, originally released in 1991. Lydia Lunch: New York City's provocateur, poet, singer, author, performer, and actress. From fronting the influential no-wave group Teenage Jesus and The Jerks to her current musical incarnation as Big Sexy Noise, with Gallon Drunk's noise makers James Johnston, Terry Edwards, and Ian White; countless collaborations and projects in between Lydia has never played by anyone's rules but her own. This 1991 collaboration with the Australian iconic cult figure Rowland S. Howard is perhaps one of her most revered. Featuring production by JG Thirwell (Foetus, Manorexia) and drums by Jim Sclavunos (Bad Seeds, Grinderman) it's a veritable who is who of the post punk/no wave scene of the time. Rowland S. Howard is no doubt best known for his work with the Birthday Party, his discordant guitar is an essential factor in their sound. Howard sadly passed away from liver cancer in 2009. A hugely influential alternative musician, in 2011 he was subject to a 110-minute documentary entitled Autoluminescent, by cult filmmakers Richard Lowenstein and Lynne Maree Milburn, which received an independent cinema release. Featuring luminaries such as Nick Cave, Bobby Gillespie, Wim Wenders, and of course... Lydia Lunch, the film highlights Howard s genius, talent, and rightfully elevates him to the cult status he so deserves. With both parties at the height of their respective talents, this is an alternative rock gem, yet however maintains an atmosphere of eerie beauty throughout. Out of print for years, this re-press is a must have.

BAAL & MORTIMER: Deixis CD (BB 344CD)
Since 2014, Baal & Mortimer is the project of Alexandra Grübler, created in Düsseldorf, sonically exploring questions of resistance, autonomy, language, and identity. After the release of Earthrise on the label HEAVEN in 2018, her debut album Deixis will be released by Bureau B. She has collaborated with Black Merlin, Musiccargo, and Rupert Clervaux and was most recently a mentee of Laurel Halo for the Berlin Amplify program. Baal & Mortimer regularly presents her material in clubs, art spaces and festivals -- such as Torstrassenfestival Berlin or Open Source Festival in Düsseldorf -- approaching the sound of concrete potentialities in tone, body, and performance. The 13 tracks were written, recorded, and produced in bedrooms and studios throughout Düsseldorf and Berlin. Again and again, contrast and opposition are conjured up in a moment of eternal grip -- the never-arriving: "Atopos". Fragments of voices emerging from a brittle fog, icy traces of human activity and its mistakes. German, English, machine, human, male, female: corresponding to the same origin, changed, subdued and always elastic. "Prostheses" and "The Ship Of Fangs" were created during the Amplify Mentoring Program, in which Laurel Halo selected Baal & Mortimer to partake in a month-long residency. "Nathanaël" and "H/Délires" summon an elegiac echo of Düsseldorf -- where it all began at Salon des Amateurs -- and its legacy seeping through. Texture and mood of a city and its history, pushed forward by a granular humming, interspersed with fading voices, caryatids that hold everything together and yet fall. A non-linear time oscillating between grainy rhythms and the melancholic pull of soundscapes, eternally pushed by choral echoes, singing against themselves. The artwork is by artist and photographer Chris Filippini, capturing the space between heaven and earth. Spirit and matter, unity and duality; dissolving the boundaries until there are no more polarities. An inner being is taken apart and not reassembled; fragments that do not form a whole, and never have been whole; exhibited under glass they remain possibility and promise. Nathanaël, je te parlerai de tout.

LUBELSKI & MARCIA BASSETT, SAMARA: Morning Flare Symmetries LP (FTR 520LP)
"The fourth album that Samara Lubelski and Marcia Bassett have recorded as a duo -- the second for us, following 2017's Live NYC (FTR 302LP) -- is much less about drones than some of their previous work. Morning Flare Symmetries blares like a ram's horn blown as a call to angelic battle. Everyone has been unanimous in agreement that this improvising duo has achieved a new highpoint in the musical histories of both Samara and Marcia. They each have deep roots in the East Coast sub-underground, with a whole dang lot of band names between 'em, but in this configuration they just continue to get weirder and better on every outing. The string blend they manage to invent is a hugely psychedelic wave that washes over everything in its path. And when you're enveloped in its massive flow, you are hauled along by sonic forces that are way beyond your control. Some parts are soothing, others are eruptive, but they work a really amazing push-pull on your brain, so that the individual sections don't feel competitive so much as complimentary. Like thousands of tiny thumbs urging your spirit to free itself? Sure, why not? I absolutely encourage you to check out all of their albums. but this new one is a particular killer, so maybe you ought to start right here." --Byron Coley, 2020

CALE & TERRY RILEY, JOHN: Church Of Anthrax LP (COL 30131HLP)
2020 repress. Terry Riley (piano, organ, soprano saxophone) & John Cale (bass, harpsichord, piano, guitar, viola, organ) collaborated on this one-off album, released in 1970. At this time, rock music was a serious movement, removed from the joke it once was, quite unaware of the joke it would eventually become, and things like this sometimes happened. Cale, classically trained on the viola, must have been pretty pleased to get a shot to record with the '60s king of minimalist pulse, Terry Riley. The album features 4 collaborative tracks between the two; while maybe not earth-shattering, they are quite fine for horizontal home listening pleasure at just about any hour of the day. Instrumental jams, mixing the styles of the two players pretty evenly (if you're vaguely awake, you can imagine this easily). The fifth track is a psychedelic pop masterpiece by Cale, "The Soul of Patrick Lee." Exactly why this track is included here has never been adequately explained, but it is about as beautiful as music in song form can get. 180 gram exact repro reissue.

DAVIS, MILES: In A Silent Way LP (CS 9875HLP)
Restocked. 2013 reissue of Miles Davis' 1969 LP on 180 gram vinyl. "There is no melody, not even a melodic frame. There are only vamps and solos, grooves layered on top of other grooves spiraling toward space but ending in silence. But even these don't begin until almost ten minutes into the piece. It's Miles and John McLaughlin, sparely breathing and wending their way through a series of seemingly disconnected phrases until the groove monster kicks in." --All Music

CULTURES OF SOUL RECORDS (UNITED STATES):
SAN FRANCISCO CHRISTIAN CENTER CHOIR: The Sound of the San Francisco Christian Center CD (COS 020CD)
"When most people think of the musical legacy of San Francisco, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the Summer of Love. Much less likely are you to hear about the City by the Bay's rich heritage of gospel music. Cultures Of Soul is proud to revisit this chapter in the city's history with the reissue of The Sound Of The San Francisco Christian Center. The San Francisco Christian Center was one of the first churches to open its doors to disaffected hippies searching for a deeper spiritual substance. This era saw new, youth-driven forms of 'Jesus music' that fused gospel messages with rock aesthetics. Chief amongst these new-style gospel artists was the San Francisco-based Andraé Crouch, who was one of the influences behind this recording. As a historical document, it provides a breathtaking view into the roots of contemporary gospel music, but as just pure music, it is a transcendent listening experience."

MITCHELL & LISA E. HARRIS, NICOLE: Earthseed CD (FPE 027CD)
"The work of award-winning African American science fiction author Octavia E. Butler becomes increasingly prophetic as we move through the challenges of the new century. Her novels Parable of the Sower (1993) and Parable of the Talents (1996) use fiction to illuminate a horrific unraveling of 21st-century America into a despotic chaos where its once-middle-class citizens struggle to survive in an incredibly violent and fragmented reality, void of normalcy, family, and resources. In the 1990s, Butler's Parables warned readers about a possible disintegration of American culture and infrastructure, among the many risks of tyrannical rule. Within Butler's storyline, the character Lauren Oya Olamina, a preacher's daughter of African heritage, helps to rebuild her community through offering Earthseed, an egalitarian philosophy and spiritual practice which honors inquiry, independent thinking, and realistic acceptance of constant change."

CASHMORE, MICHAEL: The Doctrine Of Transformation Through Love II CD (GG 322CD)
"Michael Cashmore is an English composer and musician currently living in Berlin. He has created music under the name of Nature And Organisation since the early '80s and more recently (2006) under his own name. He is widely known as being the composer of the most seminal albums of legendary group Current 93 during a 25 year period, he has also worked with, and wrote music for, Nick Cave, Marc Almond, Anohni (Antony and the Johnsons), Tony Visconti, Bill Fay, Little Annie among others. During the last 3 years Cashmore has been undergoing a process of personal transformation which has also caused a transformation of his work. Michael has also been using his music itself as a tool of transformation in return. His new album The Doctrine Of Transformation Through Love II is the second part of a series of works that documents Cashmore's personal transformation from 2017 onwards. The music here is now very experimental, electronic, melodic and could be seen to have a dark connection to techno. As a strong contrast to the rest of the album the last track features a simple melodic song with legendary singer/songwriter Little Annie. The album is an eternal journey through darkness, space and loneliness through divine love into light and elevated consciousness, it is a documentation and is a key tool to be used in the process of transformation through love. This album was created to energize and turn the listener into an active participator in the work. It introduces Michael's new movement The Hidden Throne 434 which is intended to motivate and inspire people to reach their true potential through transformation through love, this album will become a force within its creation and reaction."

SIMONE, NINA: Pastel Blues LP (PHS 600187HLP)
"If this is blues, it's blues in the Billie Holiday sense, not the Muddy Waters one. This is one of Nina Simone's more subdued mid-'60s LPs, putting the emphasis on her piano rather than band arrangements. It's rather slanted toward torch-blues ballads like 'Strange Fruit,' 'Trouble in Mind,' Billie Holiday's own composition 'Tell Me More and More and Then Some,' and 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out.' Simone's then-husband, Andy Stroud, wrote 'Be My Husband,' an effective adaptation of a traditional blues chant. By far the most impressive track is her frantic ten-minute rendition of the traditional 'Sinnerman,' an explosive tour de force that dwarfs everything else on the album." --Richie Unterberger

COLEMAN, ORNETTE: Something Else!!! LP (OJC 163LP)
"This 1958 debut recording by the Ornette Coleman Quintet, which featured Coleman on his trademark white plastic alto, Don Cherry on trumpet, Billy Higgins on drums, Walter Norris on piano, and Don Payne on bass, shook up the jazz world -- particularly those musicians and critics who had entered the hard bop era with such verve and were busy using the blues as a way of creating vast solo spaces inside tight and short melody lines. Something Else!!!! is anathema to that entire idea, and must have sounded like it came from outer space at the time. First, Coleman's interest was in pitch, not 'being in tune.' His use of pitch could take him all over -- and outside of -- a composition, as it does on "Invisible," which begins in D flat. The intervals are standard, but the melodic component of the tune -- despite its hard bop tempo -- is, for the most part, free. But what is most compelling is evident in abundance here and on the next two tunes, 'The Blessing' and 'Jayne': a revitalization of the blues as it expressed itself in jazz. Coleman refurbished the blues framework, threaded it through his jazz without getting rid of its folk-like, simplistic milieu. In other words, the groove Coleman was getting here was a people's groove that only confounded intellectuals at the time. Coleman restored blues to their 'classic' beginnings in African music and unhooked their harmonies. Whether the key was D flat, A, G, whatever, Coleman revisited the 17- and 25-bar blues. There are normal signatures, however, such as 'Chippie' in F and in eight-bar form, and "The Disguise" is in D, but in a strange 13-bar form where the first and the last change places, altering the talking-like voice inherent in the melodic line. But the most important thing about Something Else!!! was that, in its angular, almost totally oppositional way, it swung and still does; like a finger-poppin' daddy on a Saturday night, this record swings from the rafters of the human heart with the most unusually gifted, emotional, and lyrical line since Bill Evans first hit the scene." --Thom Jurek, All Music

WELDON/KOKOMO ARNOLD, CASEY BILL: Bottleneck Guitar Trendsetters Of The 1930's LP (YAZ 1049HLP)
2020 repress. 180 gram exact repro reissue of this Yazoo's collection of these two blues guitarists, originally released in 1975. "Kokomo Arnold and Casey Bill Weldon were two of the most popular and original-sounding bottleneck guitarists of the Thirties, a generally dismal period for blues recording. In terms of contemporary appeal (the only yardstick that mattered to blues men themselves) they far outstripped Robert Johnson, Bukka White, and other bottleneck artists of the era.... Arnold, a left-handed guitarist, confronts the listener as one of the zaniest, most manic guitarists ever recorded; Weldon's work is an outright rejection of traditional blues harmony, and invites comparison to Western swing."
